Good evening everyone from a drizzly, wet UK 🇬🇧 Hope you’re all well wherever you are in the world. Today I’m sharing the second part of my gigantic book haul. I needed these books. Yes I did. That’s why I treated myself! Most of these books have been on my wishlist for a long time, except Life After Life which is a favourite of mine but until now, I only had on my Kindle. A big thank you also to the lovely @mrdamianbarr for convincing me to buy The Overstory by Richard Powers after selling it so beautifully in his recent Facebook chat. Have you read any of these books? What did you think? I’d love to know! #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #bookhaul #icanthelpmyself #ineedbookstosurvive #anorchestraofminorities #chigozieobioma #lifeafterlife #kateatkinson #theoverstory #richardpowers #ordinarypeople #dianaevans #outlander #dianagabaldon #thesecretary #reneeknight #kamilashamsie #homefire https://www.instagram.com/p/B_qCIX1ACvo/?igshid=1smda3ecqfv9r

Wow! Although I read this book a few months ago. I have finally got around to crafting some words which I hope testify to my enthusiasm even months after completing this fine work. The fact I can still “feel” this book; this is a testament to the strong writing, which I noted as magnetic, makes this January release already a contender for best fiction of 2019! An Andre Ace perhaps. This novel is very different and it is narrated by the chi( the life force in Igbo spiritual systems) of protagonist Chinonso. A most unusual way to format a novel but it works to great effect. Chinonso goes through some hard times, being scammed, love woes and just overall bad damn luck. Chinonso is a character to root for and his story is told with an emotional intensity that will have you choked with feelings. When a novel can make you feel and care, then you know something magnificent has taken place and believe me, this one is a must read! I rarely reread books, but may make an exception for An Orchestra Of Minorities.

Looking forward to the @thebookerprizes shortlist Sept. 3! 📚 I’m a big fan of last year’s winner, George Saunders—and even managed to start reading his ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’ before being buried alive in a TBR pile avalanche..... 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m way ahead of the curve though since I read Oyinkan Braithwaite’s ‘My Sister the Serial Killer’ and have two other books on my to read list already. Braithwaite’s book was fantastic and left me wondering which sister was really the most dangerous..... 📚 Congratulations to all of the authors whose books have made the #BookerPrize2019 longlist. #margaretatwood #thetestaments #kevinbarry #nightboattotangier #mysistertheserialkiller #OyinkanBraithwaite #lucyellmann #ducksnewburyport #BernardineEvaristo #GirlWomanOther #JohnLanchester #TheWall #DeborahLevy #TheManWhoSawEverything #LostChildrenArchive #ValeriaLuiselli #AnOrchestraofMinorities #ChigozieObioma #maxporter #lanny #Quichotte #Salmanrushdie #10minutes38SecondsinthisStrangeWorld #ElifShafak #JeanetteWinterson #Frankisstein https://www.instagram.com/p/B17ESG4Bfkj/?igshid=1t9kfr593w8ow

AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES
AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES
An Orchestra of Minorities is one book I was really happy to finish. It was just too sad for comfort. It didn’t make me cry out but it evoked a lot of feelings within me that made my mood low. After reading two of Chigozie Obioma’s books, I can confidently say that he is really a deep thinker and his books evoke deep thought. In this book centered around Igbo traditional beliefs (ọ̀dị̀nànị̀)  and…

Feb 13th, 2019 || reading, reading & reading. That, and watching The Last Kingdom. Only 4 episodes in but it’s entertaining. . Onto the reading though: 🌻I’m almost finished with The Fifth Season and oh my god, how good is it? Like, I have no idea what on earth is going on... i have loads of questions about the world but still, I can’t stop reading! 🌻And I’ve made some progress with An Orchestra of Minorities (pictured book). It’s a slow read for sure but it’s interesting and bizarre at the same time. Will finish it before the week ends. . . How are you? Any new books worth recommending? Or tv shows? ☺️ • • • #readingupdate #readeveryday #booksandnails #vintagerings #bookdepository #unitedbookstagram #bookstagramit #readinglove #thefifthseason #anorchestraofminorities #currentlyreading https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt0e8nuHfm4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=m66x8v48zfbl

Good morning from the UK 🇬🇧 everyone and happy #stacksaturday 🙌🏻 Bit of an early post from me today as I’m off to London again this weekend to see Moulin Rouge at the theatre with bestie @stevieredman 😍 Today I’m jumping on the #eightbookseightcountries tag which I saw on the lovely @abrewandabook_ page. One of my favourite things about reading is the countries and cultures I get to experience and I could definitely do this tag all over again with completely different countries. From the top: The Diving Pool - Yoko Ogawa (Japan) The Gustav Sonata - Rose Tremain (Switzerland) My Year Of Rest and Relaxation - Ottessa Moshfegh - (America) The Magician - Colm Toibin - (Germany) The Cat’s Table - Michael Ondaatje - (Sri Lanka) Do Not Say We Have Nothing - Madeleine Thien - (China) The Lives Of Others - Neel Mukherjee - (India) An Orchestra Of Minorities - Chigozie Obioma - (Nigeria) I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a lovely weekend everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstack #booksonmyshelf #thedivingpool #yokoogawa #thegustavsonata #rosetremain #myyearofrestandrelaxation #ottessamoshfegh #themagician #colmtoíbín #thecatstable #michaelondaatje #donotsaywehavenothing #madeleinethien #thelivesofothers #neelmukherjee #anorchestraofminorities #chigozieobioma #booksandplants #booksineedtoread https://www.instagram.com/p/CdQBqqygbyi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Feb 18th, 2019 || I’m here today a rant 🤷🏻‍♀️. . An Orchestra of Minorities follows Chinonso, or rather his chi (his guardian spirit) as he is the one telling Nonso’s journey. We know from the beginning that Nonso has done something bad but we need to know his story to try and understand his actions. . I was interested in this because it’s some sort of reimagining of the Odyssey based upon Igbo beliefs, culture and folkore. Some bits of this novel were really good; however, unfortunately, this book didn’t work for me. . Although the choice of narrator was appealing, it backfired. I felt a complete disconnection with Nonso’s story. Some horrible stuff happens to him but I could never feel fully emotionally invested in. The way his chi recounts the story was very repetitive, sometimes going on and on and on about the same thing and became tedious at parts. . All things considered, this book is well-written, it deals with difficult themes and it could work for many readers. I could even forget about the repetitiveness of the story if it weren’t for a “tiny” thing that just made me furious: the violence against women is not only never punished but is also trying to be justified and that’s a big fucking no. Women in this novel are blamed for everything, even when there is no reason to and their portrayal leaves much to be desired. Ndali’s character, the main female protagonist, felt like a piece of cardboard. She’s introduced when Nonso serendipitously meets her at a bridge when she’s about to take her own life. She clearly has some mental health issues. Do you think those are explored? No. They’re never mentioned again. She meets him and poof! she’s good again. . We do have beautiful writing and interesting philosophy, but it’s all forgotten when this man is allowed to blame everything that happens to him to a woman he supposedly loves. I was very angry at the end because I was tired of reading Nonso’s chi excuses for why violence against this woman should be forgiven. And I could understand it if the author challenged said views, but it didn’t feel like he did. • • #bookreviews #bookreviewer #bookstagramit #anorchestraofminorities #readeverywhere #readeverything https://www.instagram.com/p/BuBUrIgn48K/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1r9oqbwub32nj
