Not going to lie I don’t even remember that John b was in obx bc I skipped over all his scenes bc he pisses me off. I am a proud anti-John b fan.

I skipped all of season 1 of Outer Banks because I just despise John B dating someone Kaira had active beef with, like way to pick a girl over your friend.

my unpopular obx opinions that no one asked for (unfiltered and in detail)...
Tumblr media
Sarah cheating on John B was not unexpected. She ran into the arms of Topper Thornton whenever the opportunity presented itself which bring me to my next point...
Sarah does not like being a pogue. I believed she liked the initial freedom and adventure but when shit gets tough, she runs back to what reminds her of her old life (*cough cough* Topper). She has the luxury of being on the fence of Kook and Pogue sometimes.
Pope is technically the real main character of the show. On paper, yes, the show is about John B finishing the treasure hunt that his father started. BUT, after season 2, it was clear that the entire treasure itself revolved around Pope, a direct descendant of the man the treasure belonged to and I don't think we got enough of that.
Pope is a stronger character than he is presented to be. I think the show highlighted his self-defense capability in seasons 2 and 3 but it's widely ignored that this man has gone up against Rafe on multiple occassions and lowkey beat his ass. (Rafe beat his ass too but still).
Kiara will forever be wrong for how she did Pope. She treated him like SHIT. Like, if I was Pope, I genuinely could not be friends with her after like. P4L my ass. And then there are people who call him butthurt but if the roles were reversed...Hardcore Kie fans can defend her all they'd like but after a certain point, there was no excuse for her to be leading him on the way she did. She knew she didn't like him in that way and that's very clear from the start of season 2, but she proceeds to sleep with him and then tell him off.
Ward is a better father than Big John. Y'know, I pondered on this for a bit. And I am standing by it. Big John would break both of John B's legs and throw him onto a set of train tracks if it got him closer to finding the gold and excuse it by saying some shit like "But you didn't die, did ya, Bird?". Like that man was ALIVE for almost an entire year and made no attempt to contact his son. Ward is a criminal by all means but most of the time, at least what we saw as viewers, he was doing it for Rafe.
Cleo deserves more screen time and a better backstory. I know she's a new character and all but like WHAT'S HER LAST NAME?? Like does she not have one? Is she not real??
(edit) Kiara is very insensitive to the feelings of her friends and overall generally self-centered. She literally acts like her parents are the worst in the world. I get it, they don't like her friends and they are indeed hypocritical towards the pogues considering her father was one. But in season 2, she gets in the car and says "this shit would be so much easier without parents" next to JJ, aka the one with an abusive father. Not to mention, she's seen how John B fell apart after his father disappeared and how hard it's been for Sarah to go against her father.
CLEOPOPE BEST SHIP.
Anyway, I did this out of boredom. I had to take a break from actual writing for a moment.

missing season one when the only couple in the friend group were john b and sarah, like why did they have to ruin the characters' dynamics by pairing together every single character?? as if in order to have a "happy ending" you have to be with someone or else you'll be miserable
and don't even get me started on jiara, those two have the biggest siblings energy and they just end up together because of the annoying fans who harassed madison and rudy and pushed the jiara agenda ughh they had zero chemistry and it felt so forced that it physically hurt me to watch their interactions, every scene was just so so bland and boring and yet people love them? kiara lierally said "i love you dude" and jj was like "thanks, great" lmaoo what are we talking about?
the fact that even rafe and barry have more chemistry than them and with way less scenes together says a lot tbh
also i really hate the fact that the writers had kie be with every boy!! she's her own person and they did her dirty with all this stupid relationship business, just leave them friends for god's sake it's not that hard

JJ is jelly of Kie, not the Boys!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When JJ thought Kie liked John B (and vice versa), He was all for John B making a move and even teased him constantly because of it. Even saying that her kissing him on the cheek was an obvious sign that she liked him back. But when Kie starts to "have feelings" for Pope, he becomes quiet and looks sad/upset/jealous at their romantic interactions (including kie kissing Pope on the cheek in S2, which is a big deal in JJ's eyes). If JJ liked kie, he wouldn't be ecstatic about setting John B up with Kie, even if it was a mere cheek kiss or onesided. He would start to become jealous like he did with Kie and Pope. But he didn't. So if JJ assumed Kie liked both John B and Pope yet only got jealous when it came to Pope. that obviously means that JJ isn't jealous of John B or Pope for getting Kie but is jealous of Kie getting Pope. He could care less if Kie and John B got together, but once she made her way to Pope, he started looking and acting jealous. Like questioning Kie about Pope in bed and her relationship with him and becoming more vocal about being annoyed at being a third wheel. Even the way JJ spoke so highly of Pope and looked at him with such admiration when talking to Kie. (in my opinion, the way Kie looked at JJ once he finished talking showed that she knew he had feelings for Pope, but maybe that's just me lol) So if he knew that reminding Kie how great Pope was would help her see what there is to like about him, then why did he get jealous by Kie kissing him on the cheek? It was because that's when he knew that he lost Pope. Cheek Kisses to JJ are such an intimate and romantic thing (Which he shared with Pope at MidSummers, might I add), so seeing Kie give Pope one upset him. But when it was John B, it wasn't a problem. The only person JJ is jealous of is Kie (and Cleo, but she doesn't pull up till later) since she stole his golden boy from him.

anyway when I say j*ara would ruin established characterization I'm not just talking about jj and kie like you'd have to do some shit to all of the characters for that to work and to be supported pope isn't angry about it? okay. there's no way he's not fucking hurt over her using him and then moving on to jj, though. especially not since he saw how hard she fought against john b and sarah and found out about the john b/kie kiss in season one. and he doesn’t even know about the fact she threw them sleeping together in her mother’s face out of fucking spite.
john b supports it? fat fucking chance honestly. and not because he’s into kie or anything but because he’s known jj longer than any of them and he knows it’d be a fucking disaster of hurt feelings.
sarah supports it? MAYBE i could buy that she supports what makes the others happy but she also fucking knows what kie did with pope and she would have some reservations about that.
jj himself gave up on doing anything with kie a long time ago and you can't convince me that one of the most loyal characters on the show is going to get with someone who just unceremoniously dumped his best friend????

something that i think is so interesting about ship wars is people arguing their opinions as facts
like people who hate jiara think it would be stupid and random bc kie has already “dated/messed around with john b and pope (that rlly isn’t unrealistic or automatically misogynistic i think it’s more misogynistic to assume writing her to have a little fling with her only guy friends is misogynistic but that beside the point.
people who don’t ship them go on and on about their lack of chemistry and again how random the pairing would be but it’s so wild because as someone who likes the ship i kid you not with no influence no gun to my head i shipped them from the end of the first episode on my first watch of the show ever before i saw a single post about the show at all
from the beginning if she show, the literal jump, i was like … oh he’s in love with her, i like their dynamic best for sure
so you can hate them but if you were to argue it with me by saying they have 0 chemistry i would just be like “what do you mean i was feeling the tension from season 1”😀bc i genuinely was lmfao and i’m taking with NO outside influences

OBX 3 TIER LIST
i wanted to make a review but um... it took me like a week to finish the whole thing.. which should say enough.. and honestly i don't really feel like rewatching the majority of the episodes lol. i'll just give my reasons for the tiers instead.
Tumblr media
this is probably my most unpopular one yet.
the only emotional journeys i connected with this season was topper, rafe and pope.
cleo could've been there if they actually focused more on her as a person rather than being thrown into a relationship and having that be the focus of her arc, same with kiara. still, i find cleo / pope duo way more watchable than jj / kiara. and she is a nice character.
i actually wished we'd seen kiara be kidnapped half of the season at singh's so that, a) the reunion actually feels more earned b) her and rafe's scenes were gold and probably the most interesting things for her character this season c) we could learn more about the "new, evil villain" and his motives. instead he felt out of place.
as for singh, he could cut it with the "you knows" ....
topper and kiara delivered on the comedy this season though, which is one reason they placed higher.
CAN'T FORGET BARRY
jj's whole "i don't want to be loved" thing felt half assed and he didn't crack me up the way he did s1-2... the humor felt kind of cartoonish (crabs 🫥). i still don't like how they dumb him down to an actual caricature, it was endearing and believable in s1 but it's just gotten worse each season for cheap slapstick. it's not funny.
i wanted more conflict between him and pope and their friendship
i didn't need jj / kiara to be honest... had no relevance to what was going on, and felt very dry. like they were trying to churn out something that just isn't there, and i didn't recognise the characters either.
rafe just elevates any scene he's in and any character he's with. i give props to drew 'cause even though the writing feels more serious for his character than the others, it probably wouldn't come across as good as it does without a good enough actor. luckily enough he's been spared from most of the corniness on this show.
the john b/sarah/topper thing is repetitive but i'm glad we got to see a story where topper isn't villainised (in the show, just by the pogues). he saved sarah's life, yet gets used and discarded. she keeps making the same mistakes, and the john b/big john stuff was just atrocious. he suddenly trusts the dad who abandoned him for years over his ride or die friends? the gf who sacrificed everything for him?? yeah ok dude.
the complete absence of rose but wheezie especially is unrealistic as hell. i don't understand why new, annoying characters are introduced (limbray.... singh... jb's dad) when they don't amount to anything in the end and there is no investment in them. we could've seen so many good family relationships and dynamics, how does the completely overlooked youngest sibling view everything? actually an episode from her POV would've been hilarious and also insanely interesting.
as much as i prefer ward over jb's dad and liked him as a villain... he didn't play a big enough part in this season to keep (he is also irredeemable). i think they could've killed him off in s2. and rafe could've dealt with the aftermath of that this season instead of s4.
the treasure thing felt contrived and way too much for one season. i don't really get the pacing, they don't need to find something new each season they can take a break once in a while and have like every other season be more obx / character focused. and the rest plot. that way when they do find something it feels much greater! what they did over the course of these three seasons could've easily been stretched to six seasons with better writing and giving the story room to breathe, develop a lot of other things etc... instead of making up "blackbeard" 💀
there's much more to say, and a lot of issues with the production and more nitpicky faults, but these are probably my biggest issues with the story. in the end it was a very disjointed season, probably my least favorite so far.

If rafe gets a girlfriend In season 3 I will actually cry out of all the characters he gets a redemption arc because of a girlfriend like he his the worst character on the hole show and people only like him because he good looking like I always see post saying. “he would be the perfect boyfriend” shit like that and I’m like no he wouldn’t ( people who Stan rafe Cameron probably Stan billy Hargrove from stranger things which is not good both are shit characters )
Rafe is violent and aggressive towards the pogues I mean he literally beat up pope with a golf stick in season 1 when he was doing his jobs delivering food to kooks and pope wasn’t doing anything wrong he was just doing his job
He shot peterkin and than point the blame on John b ( and people still Stan him ) and I like peterkin she was a good character probably one of my favs from season 1
He tries killing his sister not once but twice !!! He literally shot her in episode 2 and than try to drowned again later on again and help rose kidnapped her in the last two episodes like and the people on TikTok says he a good brother I’m like “shut the fuck up” also in the same episode where he help rose try’s to killed pope again !!! Like wtf
Also attacked Jj during midsummer and the fact that rafe violence once more to intimidate Jj showed that he didn’t care about the consequences to his action
During the last episode he also try to hurt kie by chocking her because she told him that he shot peterkin which he did and he almost would have killed her if pope didn’t came alone and beat the living shit out him ( and rafe deserve that so much )
Also the fact that people ship kie and rafe together is disgusting kie is 16 years old while rafe is 22 years old like I hate it so much
He probably going to get an redemption arc in season 3 which if he does I will hate the writers so much like rafe deserve prison for all the shit that he does this is a rant because I keep seeing TikTok how rafe is a good character while he clearly not

OKAY BOTTOM LINE here’s what I thought about season 3 spoilers obviously
I don’t hate Sarah but she was wrong for cheating and we were ROBBED of jj and Sarah bonding
Jj and kiara is forced and awkward and purely fan service. It did not advance the plot at all
Pope did good love him
Cleo did great as well love her
Jj and pope are my favorite pogue relationship I love them soooo much more than jj and John b
John b ‘s dad was shady from the beginning and it’s annoying how that was never acknowledged

Oh that Vareity article? Reylos still crying over that really shows their obsession with John. Not only was it taken out of context because John very much supports his costar, but the same interviewer has a history of setting up his Black guests like this
I was so annoyed I totally skipped over the writer of that article being Adam B. Vary. I remember hearing about him because a similar thing happened with Anthony Mackie and he did that disgrace of a rehabilitation tour story for Joss Whedon where he called Ray Fisher a bad actor and spewed a bunch of fake nice-guy rhetoric about how he couldn't help but sleep with his subordinates because he couldn't get date in high school. (Gee I wonder why.) It honestly felt sketchy as hell because in addition to Whedon being allowed to call his victims either liars or just bad at English Vary was whining on Twitter about how Ray Fisher wouldn't do an interview with him about the Whedon of it all. Honestly, if I were a PR person in Hollywood I would advise any client of mine with melanin to decline any interview with Vary, he seems to have a nasty habit of running with quotes that could get the most rage clicks. But yeah, thanks for pointing that out to me.
Fun story, once in college I was interviewing an administrator about mental health policies. He was from the South and very brusque and blunt. He said, "if you want to kill yourself, that's fine, we can't kick you out of school for it," because I was asking him about students being forced to take time off indefinitely after mental health crises. Now, if you read that quote on its own you might think that he was saying that suicide is fine, but when I asked a follow-up question he explained that he meant that if someone is in crisis they should be encouraged to seek help, but it was against the ADA to force someone to move out of student housing due or withdraw from classes indefinitely to self-harm or suicidal ideation because being mentally ill doesn't necessarily make you unfit to be a student. I feel like Adam Vary would've just run with "if you want to kill yourself, that's fine."

The Top Guns
The Oscars unveiled its 2023 nominations this past week, joining the previously announced award nominees lists from the major unions of craftspeople that make movies (Note: DGA, WGA, SAG, PGA, among so many others). The work and the films run the gamut from big budget and big box-office to micro-cost and little-to-speak-of in the way of tickets sales.  They also stretch from the extremely well…

One thing that I keep seeing whenever I make posts that are critical of macs is folks in the notes going "they make great computers for the money if you just buy used/refurbs - everyone knows not to buy new" and A) no they don't know that, most people go looking for a new computer unless they have already exhausted the new options in their budget and B) no they don't make great computers for the money, and being used doesn't do anything to make them easier to work on or repair or upgrade.
Here's a breakdown of the anti-consumer, anti-repair features recently introduced in macbooks. If you don't want to watch the video, here's how it's summed up:
In the end the Macbook Pro is a laptop with a soldered-on SSD and RAM, a battery secured with glue, not screws, a keyboard held in with rivets, a display and lid angle sensor no third party can replace without apple. But it has modular ports so I guess that’s something. But I don’t think it’s worthy of IFixIt’s four out of ten reparability score because if it breaks you have to face apple’s repair cost; with no repair competition they can charge whatever they like. You either front the cost, or toss the laptop, leaving me wondering “who really owns this computer?”
Apple doesn't make great computers for the money because they are doing everything possible to make sure that you don't actually own your computer, you just lease the hardware from apple and they determine how long it is allowed to function.
The lid angle sensor discussed in this video replaces a much simpler sensor that has been used in laptops for twenty years AND calibrating the sensor after a repair requires access to proprietary apple software that isn't accessible to either users or third party repair shops. There's no reason for this software not to be included as a diagnostic tool on your computer except that Apple doesn't want users working on apple computers. If your screen breaks, or if the fragile cable that is part of the sensor wears down, your only option to fix this computer is to pay apple.
How long does apple plan to support this hardware? What if you pay $3k for a computer today and it breaks in 7 years - will they still calibrate the replacement screen for you or will they tell you it's time for new hardware EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD HAVE ATTAINED FUNCTIONAL HARDWARE THAT WILL WORK IF APPLE'S SOFTWARE TELLS IT TO?
Look at this article talking about "how long" apple supports various types of hardware. It coos over the fact that a 2013 MacBook Air could be getting updates to this day. That's the longest example in this article, and that's *hardware* support, not the life cycle of the operating system. That is dogshit. That is straight-up dogshit.
Apple computers are DRM locked in a way that windows machines only wish they could pull off, and the apple-only chips are a part of that. They want an entirely walled garden so they can entirely control your interactions with the computer that they own and you're just renting.
Even if they made the best hardware in the world that would last a thousand years and gave you flowers on your birthday it wouldn't matter because modern apple computers don't ever actually belong to apple customers, at the end of the day they belong to apple, and that's on purpose.
This is hardware as a service. This is John Deere. This is subscription access to the things you buy, and if it isn't exactly that right at this moment, that is where things have been heading ever since they realized it was possible to exert a control that granular over their users.
With all sympathy to people who are forced to use them, Fuck Apple I Hope That They Fall Into The Ocean And Are Hidden Away From The Honest Light Of The Sun For Their Crimes.
