well, now we know where taylor gets her shameless and ruthless GREED from.
holy fucking shit.
Tumblr media
so this is an email taylor swift’s father sent to her former manager who sued him for lack of payment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there’s like a thousand screenshots from that one email, you can view all the screenshots in this thread, i’m not gonna post them all here because tumblr only allows 10 photos at once.
but here’s a part where he’s talking about his prostate and erection issues in what is supposed to be a “professional” email.
Tumblr media
as you read more of the email you can just see the disdain he had for his wife, MULTIPLE times in the email he talks shit about taylor’s mother, and he refers to watching taylor’s brother as “babysitting” and he talks about taylor as if she is nothing more than a product and a business deal to him and he will stop at nothing to make her famous (with the end goal of her being a “movie star.”)
and OF COURSE swifties are defending him even though he clearly views his daughter as a giant dollar sign, because they are a bunch of fucking ass kissers who will defend literally ANY shitty person in taylor’s life. and if it weren’t for her dad, they wouldn’t have their favorite popstar today. at least they’re finally admitting that daddy bought and orchestrated most of her career.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, some of scott swift’s old facebook posts have resurfaced in the midst of all of this and i’m just gonna leave this one here because it will make perfect sense that he’s a racist who views poor people and addicts as “scroungers.” this is who taylor swift was raised by.

totally respect people tearing Taylor down after that subpar album but I’d like to take this space to hype up other female artists who haven’t completely drained their creative wells. Welcome to C’s music recs (women only because disliking Taylor doesn’t make you a misogynist.)
1. Cowboy Carter. Oh my god. This woman never misses. Beyoncé is consistently fantastic no matter what she’s up to. My personal favorites are AMERIICAN REQUIEM, PROTECTOR, and 16 CARRIAGES. This album feels a bit like listening to the radio while also listening to someone’s life story and it’s goddamn insane.
2. I listened to Feminomenon for the first time yesterday and I was jamming so hard. Yes Chappell Roan I too will prioritize my own wants and needs over the attention of some mediocre man who does not deserve me thank you queen. Like seriously I can’t stand clubbing but now I want to go out clubbing just so that I can dance to this song with my friends.
3. One of three songs that I actually enjoy on TTPD is Florida!!! And it’s only because of Florence. Because holy shit, Florence. I’ve become unhealthfully obsessed with Dream Girl Evil, Ship to Wreck, Shake It Out, Big God and Hunger.
4. Olivia Rodrigo continues to kill it. If my future relationship isn’t like so american, I don’t want it. And I know it’s been a while but Can’t Catch Me Now is still on my Heavy Rotation Replay every single week.
5. This is preemptive but…. New Billie Eilish in a month?????? Hell yes????
6. Honorable and continuous credit to Penelope Scott and Lorde

I wonder if Taylor's brother felt neglected growing up
I wonder about this all the time.
I've only seen a handful of pictures with the two of them together- even as kids. It always made me think that they just didn't include him in events or travel for Taylor's career aspirations.
Maybe they did, and he was just always off on the sideline - not in the photograph. However, it seems odd that he would be always out of frame- especially considering how tight-knit the other three family members seem. Just imagine how that looked in reality- all eyes on Taylor and the brother just sitting in a hotel room or on a tour bus waiting.
I remember the infamous Scott Swift email leak from 2005 about how he felt jaded because he was footing the bill as Taylor was always traveling with her mom. Where was the brother? Why was Scott upset at being left behind, while the other two went to exciting places, when, presumably, he was just at home taking care of Austin? Did he not want to spend time with his less-exciting child?
He probably was dragged around behind her his whole life- but is that really good for a kid to experience? Always being second-thought to his own sister's career moves?
It seems so odd to me that Scott and Andrea focused so much time, energy, and money on Taylor- very publicly supporting her. Yet, the brother seems so much like an afterthought.
They literally poured thousands of dollars into sending Taylor to NYC and Nashville periodically throughout her childhood in effort to secure a deal for her- but did they do the same for the brother? Did he have any big dreams? Did they even ask him?
After a brief google search, it seems like he literally just works on licensing management for Taylor's music, and the occasional creative project as extracurricular.
It makes me wonder- what did he dream about as a kid? or did that always come second to his born-to-be-famous sister? Did he really want to primarily work for his sister his whole life?
I assume he was just living life in the background- well, I'm sure, at least he's been paid well.

Her stans forgot about Matty Healy and her announcing the break up at his birthday…
Forgot about her being with Matty!
They like to talk about misogyny but at the first opportunity they believe in rumors and attack an innocent actress because she sent a photo of a colleague…
Rumours that so far have not been confirmed!
Taylor can cheat on her boyfriends, but no one can cheat on Taylor... LOL

The new album is crazy, they’re not even together anymore and she’s still taking from him. Of course she doesn’t see how that name is just an inside joke for playing pretentious characters. She doesn’t get humor, nuance, and has no idea what acting is. There’s probably a clause in her friendship NDAs that they can’t create a group chat without her
Yes, you can tell it was just an inside joke. Look at them laughing. It was clearly just a self deprecating joke, oh look at us being serious actors, playing such "tortured" characters.
Of course it went over her head... 🙄

Podcasts I love and recommend
I spent a truly extraordinary amount of time listening to podcasts this year, including my perennial faves and some new discoveries! I wanted to write up a bit about each of the ones I recommend the most highly, and give them some of the same attention and love I put into my book reviews. Recs below the cut. (This post brought to you by my patreon).
MATERIAL GIRLS- This is, hands down, my favorite podcast of all time. Friends and scholars Hannah McGregor and Marcelle Kosman take on a new pop culture subject in each episode and examine the material conditions and historical setting that made their subject of the week zeitgeisty. They bring an expansive feminist lens, different types of critical theory, and tons of humor to each topic. I feel like I am slowly getting a media studies degree one episode at a time as I listen to this show. Some of my favorite episodes tackled Jurassic Park, Dopamine, Twilight, Taylor Swift, Bridgerton, and Queer Eye. I have guested on this podcast and also support them on patreon so I can get all of that sweet sweet bonus content! (This show uploads full transcripts but they lag behind the audio episodes in updates).
GENDER REVEAL- Journalist, writer, and now small-press founder Tuck Woodstock interviews trans folks on a wide range of topics. A characteristic episode includes some deeply intimate or tender moments mixed with wild tangents, extreme silliness and irreverence. I listen to every single episode and also back them on patreon for the extra episodes; some recent conversations that have really stuck with me include Colby Gordon, a founder of Early Modern Trans Studies; trans historian Susan Stryker; Jewish anti-Zionist comic author Solomon J Brager; writer Lucy Sante; and multimedia artist (and friend of mine) Shing Yin Khor. This podcast gets a special award for recommending more books that I actually end up reading than any other podcast. This year alone I’ve read at least 6 books by authors Tuck has interviewed (I Heard Her Call My Name, Heavyweight, Hijab Butch Blues, Transgender History, Boys Weekend, Practical Anarchism, Falling Back in Love With Being Human) and I have more on my TBR (The Prospects, When Monsters Speak). (This show also uploads full transcripts).
PUBLISHING RODEO- This is a new fav! I discovered this podcast over the summer and binged all 44 available episodes in about a month. Hosts Sunyi Dean and Scott Drakeford are friends and fellow Tor authors. In 2022, they both released debut novels in the same genre, in the same year, with the same publisher, to very different results. They are remarkably candid about the nuts and bolts of their publishing deals, and in each episode interview another author, usually one early in their publishing career, on signing agents, selling books, the size of their advance, resulting royalties and more. I have learned so much about the publishing industry from this show- I’ve sold 3 books, and yet it turns out there’s still loads I don’t know. I’d recommend starting with the intro episode in which Sunyi and Scott introduce themselves and then you can jump around to any interview which interests you. Their recent conversation with Chuck Tingle was especially delightful. (This show also uploads full transcripts).
PRINT RUN PODCAST- Another new discovery, also about the publishing/writing industry. Hosts Laura Zats and Erik Hane are both literary agents at a small agency they founded together. They discuss current events in the book news world or focused single subjects, often for early career writers. Because this show is more focused on current events, I haven’t dived super far into their back catalog, but listened to a handful of episodes from the past two years and plan to continue listening as new episodes are released. Laura and Erik also have a very cool patreon special bonus offering- they will critique query letters and first pages submitted from listeners. I haven’t written a query letter since probably 2017, so the refresher course was extremely valuable! I’d recommend the episode The Books That Made Us as a good starting point in this show. (As far as I can tell, they do not release transcripts.)
FIC CLIQUE- This is an old favorite I have recommended before. In a standard episode, the three hosts Nic, Reid, and Brenna each bring one fanfiction to read and discuss book-club style. In the past year, I’ve been particularly enjoying some of the mini-episodes that break this format. If you want to give it a try but you’ve less interested in hearing people talk about a fandom you aren’t in, I’d suggest the episodes on Mapping Fannish Migration, Books and Fandom, and Genre and Subgenre in Fanfiction. (As far as I can tell, they do not release transcripts.)
FANSPLAINING- Tragically (for me), this beloved long-running show wrapped this summer with its final standard format episode after 9 years and 200+ episodes. However, there’s still more to look forward to! Fansplaining has shifted to become primarily a publisher of fandom related journalism, and they’ve been releasing audio versions of each article along with the text, generally recorded by the author. I find these so charming, almost like new mini episodes of the show. Find a full list of their articles here; I especially loved the recent ones on The Beatles RPF fandom (still going strong!) and Bringing Fanfiction into the Classroom.  (This show has full transcripts).
SHELVED BY GENRE- In this show, the three hosts re-read popular sci-fi or fantasy book series and record long rambling episodes which both summarize and analyze their current texts. When I say they ramble… most episodes are over 2 hours, some pushing 3 hours. I started on this show when they began reading the Earthsea series by Ursula K Le Guin, which I have read multiple times in past years. I skipped their episodes on Gene Wolfe, who I haven’t read, as well as some movie and horror focused episodes. But I happily dived back in for the unit on Mercedes Lackey’s Last Herald Mage Trilogy, which was perhaps the first book with an out queer character I ever read; the queer host on the show, Michael, similarly remembers this as a foundational queer text from his teen years. I am very happy that the next author the hosts plan to discuss is William Gibson, who I might re-read to keep pace with the show. I recommend checking out their 40+ back episodes to see if there’s something you are interested in! (As far as I can tell, they do not release transcripts.)
STUFF THE BRITISH STOLE- I found this 3 season podcast sometime in the middle of the year, hosted by an Australian journalist following the trail of objects (or sometimes animals or people) the British stole during the height of their colonial reign. The episodes generally run 35-45 minutes and feature interviews, history, and usually live records of the host seeing the item, whether it’s currently in a museum, a private collection, a random high school, or the site of a foreign grave. You can jump around to whatever topic that interests you, but I can definitely recommend the episode Blood Art as one of very few in which an item is repatriated! (As far as I can tell, they do not release transcripts.)
LIVE LIKE THE WORLD IS DYING- A Margaret Killjoy and a group of queer anarchist friends rotate the hosting of this show. Once a month they release a “This Month in the Apocalypse” update which I started listening to in November and plan to keep up with going forward, but probably won’t listen to back episodes of as it’s very current-events focused. However there are other conversations/interview style episodes released between the monthly updates. Two recent interviews that really stuck with me were Spencer Sunshine on his zine “40 Ways To Fight Fascists” (which I subsequently downloaded and read) and Henri Feola on their zine “The Veil Between Worlds is Plexiglass”, which chronicles some of their experience spending 96 days in jail after being arrested protesting Atlanta’s Cop City and the police murder of Tortuguita, a protester defending the Weelaunee People’s Forest. I have a friend in Atlanta who was arrested at the same protest so I’ve been following this case; this conversation felt important and needed, as I expect there will be even more arrests of protestors in the coming years. (As far as I can tell, they do not release transcripts.)
BORROWED AND BANNED- The Brooklyn Public Library released this 7 episode limited run podcast on book bans, book challenges, how it’s affecting teachers, students, librarians and authors. I was one of several authors interviewed for the show, and you can hear my interview as a separate bonus episode; but I highly recommend listening to the whole thing because it’s a very close and personal look at these national issues- which I expect to get worse under the Trump administration. (This show has full transcripts).
SOLD A STORY- This is a 10 episode limited run podcast about how a misinformed educational specialist’s incorrect idea of how children learn to read damaged the literacy of a whole generation of school children. This podcast explores different research on reading, how sweeping educational policies like Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” impacted schools and how textbook companies pushing expensive reading-kit book sets have all negatively impacted schools. The later episodes contain messages and voicemails from parents, teachers, and students reacting to the show and some hope of change on better educational resources. I’ve probably made this sound dry but it’s genuinely a very emotional journey- as someone who really struggled to learn to read, I found this show riveting. (This show has full transcripts).
THE REDEMPTION OF JAR JAR BINKS- This 6 episode limited run show is hosted by Dylan Marron, better known as the host of Conversations with People Who Hate Me and for his role as Carlos on the podcast Welcome to Nightvale. Marron was the target of a fair amount of internet hate himself, which made him interested in how people express hate towards public figures online, and why. This led him to investigate what is possibly the first ever case of cancellation online: the rage directed at the character Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequel series which began releasing in 1999, and how that hate destroyed the mental health of and nearly ended the acting career of the young Black actor who voiced and helped develop the character. Marron is a deeply compassionate interviewer, and a good researcher. He finds and talks to fans who built “kill Jar Jar Binks” websites in the days of the early web, he interviews the actor, Ahmed Best, he interviews folks involved with the production on the Star Wars prequels. I am a lukewarm Star Wars fan at best (lol) but I loved this podcast. (This show has full transcripts).
WIND OF CHANGE- I picked up this 8 episode limited run podcast because it was researched, written and hosted by Patrick Radden Keefe, the author of Say Nothing, one of the best nonfiction books I’ve ever read. In this show, Keefe digs into rumors of the CIA using cultural productions, especially pop music, as propaganda weapons against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. In particular, he’s interested in one song, “Winds of Change”, by German rock group The Scorpions which became an anthem of change shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall and then the end of the Soviet Union. Keefe is friends with someone who does a lot of recruiting of ex-CIA folks and has also written a whole book on the CIA, so he’s not without background or connections on this subject; but the question he most wants an answer to might not be one he can ever answer. This was gripping and intriguing, and made me think a lot about soft power and propaganda more generally. (This show has full transcripts).

Scott rethinks life at Jean's funeral
Tumblr media
Chuck's ungrateful shithead imperialist bird girlfriend sentenced Jean to death for embracing girl power. Failing to execute her, Jean went and did it herself. Scott does a lot of thinking at the funeral, basically doing a clip show of X-Men history through his eyes. He thinks back to the very first day that Jean arrived and how things seemed simpler then even when fighting Magneto every other week.
There's some fascinating stuff here. Scott's view of the school's purpose - 'to seek out mutants and train them in the use of their powers' - has to be viewed as something of a failure in retrospect. They spent a lot of time beating up mutants who could already use their powers and didn't expand the teaching aspect beyond the O5 for decades. Bobby's disinterest in the arrival of a girl certainly hits different, as does the fact that they went to fight Magneto with only a few hours training. Scott reflects on his infatuation with Jean and acknowledges the role of childhood trauma in keeping it to himself - and his DEADLY EYES - of course.
Tumblr media
A lot of Magneto fights here, especially once he recruited the Brotherhood. Xavier's presence is felt even when he wasn't there, his deception and odd behaviour viewed mostly neutrally at this point. There's a thread of being 'good X-Men' and 'loyal' running through to present day, though Scott has conflicted feelings about it.
Tumblr media
The ridiculousness of shit like the Savage Land sticks out next to realising Jean had become the most important thing in Scott's life. I guess it doesn't seem that way when you're fighting for your life vs dinosaurs and shit. The thwarted polyamory of Scott, Warren and Jean gets a nod even as a devastated Warren stands beside him at her funeral. I'm so glad that three full panels are dedicated to Magneto's multiple alien abductions. Scott being like 'good! I wish that stuck' just makes it even funnier. The sliding timescale is such a headfuck and putting all the X-Men's history side by side just makes me think these poor MFs do not get downtime.
I think early Juggernaut is kinda boring tbh, though it's interesting that he'd even show up on Cerebro. I mean, he did. We saw it, but we know he's not a mutant despite joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Dude just hated Chuck *that* much, pretty relatable really. It's pretty funny that Chuck has abandoned his dream, Earth, and the X-Men in general while Cain is fighting in the trenches. Both have happened multiple times but not simultaneously (I'm pretty sure.) If they do start another school they should call it The Marko School for whatever just to troll Chuck.
Tumblr media
Moving on to Bolivar Trask's very successful and swift anti-mutant efforts with both rhetoric and sentinels feels like a nod to Cold War paranoia. Something I enjoyed about ORCHIS as an enemy was the nod to the original sentinels as third parties with their own agenda. Machines of hate that backfire on their creators - you have to wonder why people keep building them.
The mood whiplash of the lover's stroll, snuck in between dire fights for survival is appropriate considering Jean's very recent death. The whole Phoenix thing came about because another idiot built sentinels - Steven Lang - and Jean nearly died saving the X-Men. It's a cute vignette, though Scott and Jean having speech bubbles coming out of their mouths while kissing looks awkward. Perhaps that's appropriate, as we're in the realm of memory and nobody is a completely reliable narrator.
Tumblr media
Early Lorna and Alex shit is wild in retrospect, especially Mesmero's parentage scam. Should have listened to the dude lol. Weird epigenetics would totally end up being a thing. Another casual nod to alien abduction, this time in service of hyping Magneto as a pest that will not give up. Obviously the double fist pump is great, but the juice here is the X-Men as family even without Xavier around. They defied the FBI, but it was just one guy and it was was more of a recommendation.
Green hair = mutant apparently
Woo! Chuck's first death faking. There's so many ways to interpret Xavier in general, but I like pathological liar failson. It feels like half the Silver Age is writers figuring out ways to remove him from the equation, then having to figure out reasons for his sudden return. 'Weird lies' works as well as anything and it's a character trait that's shaped his modern history.
Tumblr media
First mention of Krakoa and the ANAD X-Men, including the rest of the O5 leaving and Scott staying. The new team aren't family yet, but the team itself was something Scott wouldn't or couldn't give up. He loves Jean but he is an X-Man, simply not knowing how to define himself without it.
He reflects on Thunderbird's death (dude was incredibly determined to die tbh) through the lens of doubt. Questioning the kind of life he was leading. He wouldn't be Scott Summers if he didn't blame himself in some way, but he's in stream of consciousness and free associating.
Tumblr media
The time skip to Project Armageddon is inserted by me. Not that the time wasn't interesting but much of it doesn't have Jean in it. The Phoenixification as a result of sacrificing herself to save everyone else is significant, especially the part of Scott that wishes Jean did actually die. I think it's a smaller part than the appreciation of extra time spent together, but it's still there as a turning point. Magneto's fantastic head shows up again next to the true villain of this period - Mastermind. Dude really sucks.
Tumblr media
Speaking of things that really suck - space bullshit, Lilandra, the Imperial Guard, James Hudson. Mesmero gets a pass for rocking that cunty pose on the desk, lol. Scott ponders Jean's godhood and his refusal to grieve the last time he thought she was dead. He's quite aware of the rest of the X-Men considering him uncaring - both untrue and relatable, at least for me. Certain people can have loud opinions on the right way to grieve. I've been on both sides of that coin but don't have anything groundbreaking to add. Grief sucks and there's no right way to do it.
Tumblr media
It's a shame that Scott considers Arcade and not The Proletarian he created - a far more interesting character in my book. His thoughts drift to Proteus, Kitty and the Hellfire Club - especially the ten minutes Jean spent as Black Queen. Hellfire are such jerks, and I'm surprised Mastermind doesn't get more hate in universe for his actions. Dude's attempt to yassify Jean really backfired for him.
Still... She did nothing wrong. God forbid women do anything, my girl was hungry. The Shi'Ar think they run the universe, as if only they are allowed to kill or oppress their subjects. Lilandra has some gall coming to the funeral, chatting to Jean's parents like 'not sorry I tried to execute your daughter. She smoke too tough, her swag too different, her bitch too bad, etc. Here's a reminder of her to keep you company until we come back and honour the rest of you.' Nobody seems to have a grudge though.
Scott puts on a brave face for them while internally lacking the words to describe the pain. Kurt's surprise that he's leaving the X-Men is understandable - that's his entire support network plus Logan. Chuck isn't surprised though. He either suspected it based on his knowledge of Scott or read his mind (it was the second one.) His words are pretty heartfelt considering where Scott learned his coping and communication skills, though he does open with asking if he'll be back. Cyclops will obviously return, but he's got some mourning and marrying to do first. I enjoy seeing the clip show employed in a different medium though I wonder what one would look like now. I guess that's not really how Marvel uses nostalgia so I'm unlikely to ever find out.

looks like taylor swift’s father has a bad temper just like her boyfriend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now taylor swift’s evil publicist 👩🏻‍🦰 has already begun spinning her bullshit story about how taylor and her security team felt “threatened” by the 51 year old man, and he was threatening to throw a female member of staff in the water, so scott swift had NO CHOICE but to punch him in the face. there are a few problems with this defence:
1. taylor has an all-male security team, and she was the only woman present.
2. you’re telling me that taylor’s top notch security team felt so threatened by a 51 year old that taylor’s 70 year old father had to step in and save the day??
3. common fucking sense would tell you that this story about a photographer threatening to throw someone in the water is fucking outrageous, and even if he did that, it would be the security’s job to take care of him, not 71 year old scott swift.
4. as i’ve said before, taylor swift calls the paparazzi on herself so often it’s hard to tell if she was genuinely being ambushed or if this was staged.

re: Taylor’s brother.
didn’t he try his hand at acting? I swear I remember that from when I (gag) used to be a fan. I remember thinking that it’s weird Taylor has acted a lot more than her brother when that’s what he’s trying to do. Taylor acting proves you just need a connection and no talent to do it. So I’m sure if his parents cared about him they could have done for him what they did for Taylor.
Yeah- he does have a few acting credits to his name, but mostly he's been working for Taylor Swift all his life.
I just find it strange that he had no big dreams of his own. Scott Swift literally bought part of a company in order to get Taylor a record deal. Why didn't they do the same for the other child? There's no evidence to suggest such dedication, from the parents, to get their other child the same level of networking connections.
Clearly this is a family that told at least one of their children to "dream big" and that the "sky is the limit." Did they extend that same level of attention, vivacity, and dedication to the brother? Did they also tell him to dream big?
Even if his dream wasn't entertainment, they could have funneled resources into getting him business connections, or artist connections, or academic connections, or whatever industry connections would be fruitful for his own career aspirations.
It just seems like they never even bothered to ask him if he had a dream too- or what that dream was.
I'd find it hard to believe that his dream was working for his sister.
We only see evidence that the Swifts focused on Taylor's career in entertainment.
It's so strange that Taylor has more acting credits to her name than he does. You would think that he would have more free time to dedicate to the work- while Taylor is busier with music.
It's- odd. Perhaps he simply decided acting wasn't for him, I wouldn't know. These people are strangers to me.
Perhaps he is content with the office job, afforded to him by his sister, or perhaps he's been trained to believe that Taylor is the one worth noticing and he's better off in the background.
Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps- we will never know.
However, I will say- I, personally, find it neglectful to support one child so much, literally dedicating hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their career off the ground, while the other child is just expected to follow along without complaint.
Personally, I would not do that to my own children (that I do not yet have) or create that kind of family dynamic wherein the siblings get much different treatment.
I don't want to judge too harshly- because it's not like I have insider knowledge of their family dynamic (nor do I want insider knowledge lol leave me out of it)- but, from the outside, it looks like they prioritized Taylor over her brother.

Two months prior to its release, would-be doyens of Swift’s Tortured Poets Department have taken its barbed track listing very literally, leading to intense, often nefarious speculation regarding Swift’s six-year relationship with the British actor Joe Alwyn, which seemingly ended in early 2023.
The album’s title, revealed onstage at the Grammy awards, was quickly linked to a December, 2022 interview with Alwyn and Paul Mescal in which they revealed that Andrew Scott started their group chat, the Tortured Man Club. (“It hasn’t had much use recently,” Alwyn said: you wonder if it’s undergone a recent revival.) Swift revealed the leading track list a day later: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, So Long, London, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, to name a few, sending fans wild with speculation.
Swift, obviously, has every right to sing about her relationships however she wants to (no apologies to Eamonn Holmes). But in the absence of any music, some fans have spread baseless, dangerous and even libellous allegations about Alwyn’s conduct (which, for obvious reasons, I can’t repeat).
Last month, a brief fan-shot video of them dining in a New Orleans restaurant in December, 2022 was recirculated online with AI-doctored audio that made it sound as though Alwyn is saying “you don’t get to tell me about sad,” a line printed on the back of one of the new album’s four physical editions.
When Swift recently told a crowd that she was “lonely” when writing her 2020 album Folklore – some of which was co-written with Alwyn during the pandemic, a lonely time for most – fans took that as further confirmation of their theories. A live medley of three songs that all appear to reference cheating threw petrol on the fire.
Swift could make this stop. She is no stranger to airing her displeasure with the likes of Ticketmaster, Scooter Braun, Spotify and Apple Music, and, occasionally, politicians. Before she released Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) last year, she gave a veiled speech at one Eras tour date effectively asking fans not to go after John Mayer, whom she dated when she was 19 and he was 32 and is understood to be the subject of that album’s Dear John.
“I am not putting this album out so you should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I wrote a song about 14m years ago when I was 19,” she said in Minneapolis.
But for whatever reason – and obviously, no member of the public has any idea what transpired between her and Alwyn so far – this time she has opted to stay quiet.
Establishing a baseline for conduct is neither commercially risky nor unprecedented: just last week, Ariana Grande said, after the release of her post-divorce album Eternal Sunshine: “Anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what I would ever encourage”.
It feels like the endgame of a cat-and-mouse act that’s gone too far. Swift’s gestures towards meaning have led every single thing she does to be considered a kind of marketing, a clue to be solved. It leaves a superstar who’s usually hot on her messaging open to misinterpretation: hints about her personal life are turned by some fans into witch-hunts for anyone perceived to have wronged her; her current silence on politics allows politicians to invoke her name, from the New South Wales police commissioner quoting Swift’s anti-haters lines while defending police to Joe Biden joking that the matter of her apparently much sought-after endorsement is “classified” on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
When Swift made a blandly neutral handwritten post encouraging US citizens to register to vote on Super Tuesday, some fans speculated that her unusual left-leaning handwriting was the real indication of her loyalties – suggesting they’re so starved of substance that they’re reading into empty messages because of this dynamic she has established. (The more likely explanation is the insane way she holds a pen.)
For Swift to only direct fans as to her wishes when it suits her, it weakens her status as a truth-teller. If the comparisons with Dickinson mean anything, she might remember that nothing in the world has as much power as a word feels like the endgame of a cat-and-mouse act that’s gone too far.

Before anyone comes with that quote that y’all love to dig up from the time capsule:
She’s always been an ally to the LGBTQ community. She just never made it a spectacle as a lot of her peers do. This is the same person who insinuated Joe Alwyn encouraged her to speak up about US politics.
Taylor Swift isn’t stupid—she’s aware of the implications of her actions. This awareness has helped her to be as successful as she is. Why do you think she made that speech about her concerts being a safe space when she got backlash for “dating” MH? Him allegedly being on Slut! and removed?
Y’all love to take that quote and twist it into a narrative about being naive.
Don’t forget how she also said gay pride makes her her.
How she had a gay pride parade in the Me! video.
How she said “spelling is fun” as a way to ask if she has to spell it out, but y’all didn’t get it, so she took it out of the song.
How at TIFF, she gave a veiled statement about closeting and people laughed thinking she was making a joke. Her reaction to the laughter.
Look at how many of y’all say the Lover era was her worst era fashion wise. It’s interesting, because she was wearing a lot of rainbow in that era.
Y’all love to forget that.
Y’all also love to bring up Hayley Kiyoko and Lil Nas X as examples of why Taylor can just “come out” and won’t see any backlash.
When Hayley and Nas began their careers, they began them as out queer artists and not in country music. Nas is an openly queer artist in the hip hop industry and by all really think he has it easy?
Taylor could’ve easily still been dominating country music. But she chose to leave that genre of music. She would’ve never been able to do an album like 1989, folklore or evermore in that genre because she wouldn’t have had the lyrical freedom. She had to fight Scott Borchetta for 1989 to even be what it is.
Exactly this.
Also, I would like to add a question to swifties who refuse to see her.
What do you think this moment during anti-hero on tour is about? Why do you think she has a gigantic version of herself literally screaming at people in the audience to LOOK AT HER while the version of her on stage is performing? What could possibly be the explanation for this?
