Anon, this is months late, but I was waiting to give you a fun fact about Shun Yu's mom -

She's the producer of ALL the VBL/Vidol shows, the executive producer of We Best Love 1 & 2 and My Tooth Your Love, and the screenwriter for Unknown.

Her name is Cai Fei Qiao and basically, she is fucking amazing! Also, she acted in (and I believe wrote the screenplays for) ALL of the VBL's series:

The ghost in Stay by My Side

The Seventh Fairy (with Dong Yong) in VIP Only

The bumper car worker in Anti Reset

She worked on a 2013 show with Sam Lin, so when We Best Love came up, she personally asked him to join the series because she felt he could convey the emotional range needed for the show (drunk kiss, yes!), and she also played an instructor in that series.

EDIT: @thisonelikesaliens informed me she played the aunt in My Tooth Your Love, which she produced (woman in black on the right).

And I'm sure she played a role in Unknown since she wrote the screenplay for it based on the novel (and did a damn good job of it), but I haven't been able to spot her . . . yet.

She is also working on a second set of VBL/Vidol series, so I'm sure we are going to see this man again since he has already been in two of her series.

She recently did an interview giving more details about the upcoming series, and someone on Reddit was kind enough to translate some bits, but here is the original Japanese interview for anyone interested.

Saturday's Specials

So I've been letting several specials pass me by so after giffing Wandee I decided to basically go on a specials marathon. Oh and if you truly enjoyed any of these just don't read. Because well, for the most part, I didn't.

Starting with The Sign

It was so boring. I'm sorry but a whole new case for an hour and 20 minutes special, why? It was nice to see Saint and we did clear up a few things from the show (just like you said @twig-tea). But I didn't care for the investigation bit of the actual show, why should I care now? The ending of them by the pool was entertaining and I honestly think if they were to give me an hour of fluff with all the couples I would've preferred it. Just go on a trip and catch a purse snatcher and go back to the pool. I guess they needed to justify the money they asked people for this.

After this were the VBL specials

They used that heart bokeh in all but VIP Only. Missed opportunity for matching screenshots. You Are Mine was a love fest with a proposal in the end. It was the show I liked least originally so I wasn't really very invested. There was A LOT of kissing. And I guess they make a nice pair. But also I was bored. VIP Only. Fluff, no substance and Liu Li annoyed me a little. Nothing much to see here. The double date was cute I guess. Stay By My Side. This was my favourite show originally. This one feels like a continuation, including the problems in communication so good to know somethings don't change. There was a bit of tying of loose ends so that was good. They are still very cute together. Anti Reset. Just pure fluff. Couple goes to the amusement park. Couple goes on several rides and are very cute during it. Couple finds another couple (the one from SBMS) and compete to see who is more in love. Couple kisses by the river with hearts in the background and declare eternal love. The massive elephant in the room gets to just hang out.

And the last one...

Scent of Memory. Look, was it great to see them together again? Yes. Did I missed them? Yes. Are they still great together? Yes. Was it worth the wait? Hell no. They are cute as hell, and I still adore them, but this was like the whole original show condensed in an hour and we once again had to see one of them disappear. Was it a dream? Was it reality? Does it really matter? It was funny to see Yai get scared of the robot vacuum and the sound system and get quickly addicted to vr gaming. It was nice seeing Jom in charge. But it was blip. A montage. Cute yes but ultimately kinda hollow.

So now everything starting in 2024 is going to be VIP, even sequels. PB’s taken their greed to a whole new level.

Am I surprised? No. Am I disappointed? Very.

Back in the 2016 to 2018 era, PB’s greed was at its lowest. Yes, they did have plenty of cash-grabby diamond scenes and outfits, and when Nexon came into the picture, that’s when collectibles became a thing in Choices series.

But not only was the greed pretty low, Choices had genuinely captivating stories with lovable casts of characters. There was innovation. There was real love and passion that went into these stories and characters. There was real character development, real story progression, and real relationship formation between the characters.

Yeah, Choices began to dip during 2019, and it got really bad during 2020 and onwards. Not-so-coincidentally, VIP released on July 21, 2020. It was around this time that the stories stopped being creative and fun, and became more of a chore to read, and in some cases, just mindlessly tap through for diamonds. More on this in a minute.

The lovable friend groups of the old days are gone, having been replaced by either 1-2 “best friends” who are just reused character sprites or simply no friends but the love interest(s) themselves.

Old Choices books gave us a ton of love interests to pursue, many of which had their own unique routes and dialogues. We typically had three, four, five, even six love interests in some cases. But nowadays, we’re lucky if we get two, and even then, they’re typically race and gender customizable, which makes them feel less like actual characters and more like interchangeable parts.

To add insult to injury, we now have mediocre or outright bad stories on top of the uninteresting friends, robotic (and toxic) love interests, and mounds of collectibles and diamond outfits to sift through. Stories that push a forced romantic or sexual narrative to make us spend our diamonds on raunchy scenes with the, again, boring at best and toxic at worst, love interests. Who, not to mention, typically have really ugly or unappealing character designs.

So to sum it all up, we’ve lost innovative stories and characters, and have gained…well, nothing. I don’t want to give up on Choices because plenty of the books they’ve already fully released have been good, and they still come out with gems every now and then. Plus, Choices has gotten me through some very dark times in my life, so I really don’t want to ditch it. But PB is making it very, very hard.

And you know what else? What really stings is that Storyscape (yes, I’m going there again), the only app that could’ve been real competition for Choices, got snatched away from us far too soon.

It really is a “you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain” situation.

And that fucking sucks.

I don't call myself army, just a music fan, like to follow grown up fans of kpop and other groups and honestly up until now I thought your characterization of kpop fans and multis behavior to BTS was very one-sided and overblown. But now I'd like to offer you an apology Bpp. I keep up with a bunch of kpop podcasts run by kpop fans and black women and I follow this 30+ black woman whose whole shtick is being in kpop for vibes, not engaging in fanwars and overall being above the gross behavior from immature racist armys. So imagine my horror when I open my Twitter today and the first thing I see is this:

My heart is so heavy and burdened by this I don't even know where to start bpp. Just last week I saw a Shinee/taemin/multi fan say the hate against Jimin should 'show give those armys a taste of what they do' when Jimin has been the target of overwhelming hate from the same shinee fans since his debut. I'm thinking to just leave kpop completely because this kind of brain rot in adults over nothing makes me depressed as fuck. I sympathize more with armys now more than ever. I love Jimin and don't want to stop actively following him. How do you deal with all this hate? Seriously how do you do it?

Long-form answer:

Like I've said before, if you've managed to make your way to the podcast side of k-pop stan environments you already have my condolences lmao. I won't state the exact reasons for that here but you're already experiencing a few of those reasons it seems.

That user is actually familiar to me - she's a black woman who works in the US entertainment industry, Hollywood to be exact, in a semi-administrative role. That person is a Blink who runs in the same circles as Ash - a k-pop writer/podcaster and multi in the US; Carrie - an Exol and Shawol in Toronto who writes K-drama/film reviews; Tamar - a Jewish Blink and multi who is a k-pop journalist; and a bunch of other k-pop writers, journalists, DJs, and otherwise 'grown-ups in k-pop' who can't seem to speak even in a neutral capacity about BTS, let alone ARMY, despite many of them deriving their livelihoods from the spread of k-pop in the West spearheaded in a large part by BTS. It's partly why ARMYs are extremely skeptical of k-pop journalism because oftentimes these content creators, journalists or reviewers are just stans of other groups with barely concealed animus for BTS. And also why the quality of critical conversations in k-pop fandom is so poor. I mean, how can you trust the opinion of an adult Black woman who should intimately know the implications of racism, calling Jimin, Oli London, unprovoked? It's all so comical but also kinda tragic lol.

You sent me this ask just as I was publishing this post so perhaps you hadn't yet seen what I've said about the dominant behaviours of k-pop stans in fandom.

I understand how painful it is to see things like that but I suggest you ignore them, report and block the account if it bothers you that much, but otherwise focus on celebrating Jimin and the things you love about him. I keep saying that hate does nothing but create more of the same. Many of the people who belong to rival fandoms, especially the fandoms that have a history of being abusive to BTS and ARMY since as far back as 2014, including fans of Shinee, EXO, Beast, Super Junior, and since 2018, BlackPink, many of the people in those fandoms default to hating anything connected to BTS, and it fascinates me even now how it's like a social contagion.

If seeing opinions like that really distress you, it's okay to step back from k-pop completely. In fact I recommend it for people who tend to get really emotionally connected to the artists they support, because none of those people are going to learn to do better, and chances are you could begin mirroring their behaviour if you get too attached. I'm friends with many people from those fandoms because they've known me since before I became ARMY, they know what I think, value, and tolerate, and they share the same values as me. But a few of those friends have been sort of 'excommunicated' from their fandoms because they refuse to engage in the hate towards BTS, and this happens far more often than you think.

I write as much as I do about this topic because I get it. Nobody wants to see shit like that. But at the same time, those sentiments towards Jimin and BTS have always existed and Jimin is still happy, thriving, more concerned with knowing what his fans think about his music, so if he's the reason you're here, then focus on him.

For me it's really that simple.
