welcome to the mii of all time tournament!!
hello tumbles! have you ever looked at a mii and thought “wow. this mii has completely changed the course of my life for the foreseeable future. i would not be who i am today without this mii”? well, perhaps not. however! you may have thought something more along the lines of “this mii is pretty rad”, and in that case, they can now, well, fight to the (FICTIONAL) death with someone else’s favourite mii!!
uh here are some rules!
any mii can be submitted! whether they be a base game mii, a content creator’s mii, or even your own personal blorbo mii, they are welcome to the mii of all time tournament.
however they can’t just be an identical recreation of a pre-existing character. so for example, if you submitted link (any mainline zelda game) he would not qualify, but if you submitted lonk (pennsylvania, mii plaza) then he would be able to qualify!
for legal reasons and my fear of nintendo, i do not own miis. miis are trademarked by nintendo, technically every mii belongs to nintendo by law. this is not something for me to financially profit from, or to steal from nintendo. this is just for fun :)
this tournament is inspired by the super cool: @autismswagsummit @bible-hunger-games @aroaceswagcompetition @weirdgirlshowdown @best-overplayed-song @britishpeopletournament @thevoicetournament
please submit your miis through the form below:
thank you!

@guideoftime dumped every emotion possible into my inbox Castle Town every year held the Festival of Lights. It was of course dedicated to the Royal Family but also to the Golden Goddesses and the Triforce. Hylia wasn’t as big at this festival, since it was directed more toward Din, Nyru and Farore. Sheik, during his first lifetime, only saw the festival a handful of times. Typically at a distance too. His mother took Zelda each year, up until their destiny got in the way and all hell broke loose.  This year the King had assigned a few guards to escort Zelda to it and Sheik had carefully, made it very clear, he would not be anywhere near it. The King doesn’t give him a lot of leniency, probably thinks Sheik should bend to every single one of his commands (and rightfully so since he should), but when it came to Castle Town–he let it pass. Sheik knows why, the only reason he let it go, was the one time he had dragged him there had been–a bit of a disaster.  No one wants to see a Sheikah in the midst of a panic attack. It’s not very dignifying.  So the King lets this one thing go, and Zelda gets assigned a few guards he thinks he can trust. Sheik would have liked to have picked them, but beggars can’t be choosers and it wasn’t as if he’d trust anyone who wasn’t himself anyway.  He’s impatiently awaiting Zelda’s return when he catches a bit of gossip from the guards. He listens a moment and then swings himself down from the tree, landing in front of them and searching their gazes with his own piercing red eyes. “What do you mean you lost the Princess?” Zelda has a rather terrible habit of attempting to escape the guards. Usually, she’s a bit more clever. She does it only when she goes to Kakariko and that’s to ensure she isn’t stalked to Sheik’s house. Which, he does appreciate, he simply wishes she would choose her safety over his privacy. Escaping guards in Castle Town during a festival? If the King didn’t give her a lecture she could be sure that he’s going to.  Castle Town is bustling with energy, bubbling with life. Lights are strung up across it, lanterns lit. It’s beautiful, especially for the season, but Sheik’s about as tense as they come. His heart is in his throat, for multiple reason, and he’s trying his absolute hardest to not look anyone in the eyes. To not see their faces. It makes searching for the Princess rather difficult.  Every bit of blonde hair is searched intently, made sure it’s not her, and he grows more restless the further in Castle Town he needs to go. There’s an edge to his body that seems to frighten a few people, they move away from him, it isn’t helping him any.  When he finally finds her he’s strung high, having difficulty pulling air into his lungs. He doesn’t even glance at the vendor she’s standing at, his attention only focused on the back of her head. He steps up to her side and reaches his hand out, his trembling grip grasping her wrist and pulling her to turn and face him. He isn’t sure what expression he’s making, what she can see even with the mask on, but he feels seconds away from just sitting on the ground and shutting the world out.  It shouldn’t be this hard to breathe.  “Zelda.”  Her name tumbles from his lips, hushed, a whisper, desperate. Even with their developing–relationship–not once has he actually called her name. It feels almost like a crime to do but he’s also never felt so picked apart and raw in front of her before. The very carefully crafted layers that surrounded him torn off in the face of this place. These people.  And he needs her. In far too many ways at the moment.
It was a game they played. Or more so, it was a game that she played.
When her father assigned a slew of guards to keep watch of her during the Festival of Lights, she knew it would be all too easy. She knew details of every single guard under her father’s command, including how attentive they could (or couldn’t) be. The King was doing his best, but he wasn’t as aware of their behavior — not in the way her and Sheik were.
No, Sheik would have selected guards that were far more watchful. It would have made her game difficult, though not impossible.
Lucky for her, Sheik HADN'T been the one in charge of the assignment. The night before, she’d already woven several careful plans in her mind, crafting the most opportune moments for her escape. And if a plan didn’t work? Well she’d created more than enough backups to allow her the freedom she desired.
It would have been nice to not have to be monitored nearly all hours of the day, but that was the life of a Princess.
It was during the lighting of the lanterns and the fist round of fireworks that Zelda made her escape. Castle Town was much more lively — and packed — than usual. Between the new bursts of light and echoing BOOMS along with the unavoidable jostle of the crowd, it was all too easy to slip out of sight of the guards.
It also helped that she had years of experience from her trips to visit Sheik in Kakariko.
Tumblr media
Once free of the babysitters, Zelda was allowed to explore the vendor booths in peace. She greets each of them with a warm smile and excitement, fully immersed in the festivities and sharing in their laughter. Special pastries and other fares are passed in delight, each of the vendors eager to share their recipes with the princess. Children participate in games and run about with noise makers, which Zelda had been happy to help a woman distribute. She even partook in some of the games the children played, the sight of their smiles bringing warmth to her heart.
When Zelda had a moment to excuse herself from the children’s game, she finds herself at another vendor booth, ordering herself a glass of mead for refreshment. She is just reaching forward to grab the glass when she is interrupted, a shaky grip curling around her wrist and forcing her away from the vendor booth. Eyes WIDEN in surprise at the sight of Sheik before her, but that surprise quickly morphs into panic. She wasn’t distressed about Sheik finding her; her alarm is instead brought by the condition he is in.
 Sheik’s look is one of TORMENT, as if he is on the verge of crumbling. Even through the mask she could see that he was not okay.
“Zelda.”
Her name. It falls from betwixt his lips, barely detectable against the bustle of the crowd. When was the last time he spoke her name? Had he EVER spoken it? In that moment, she couldn’t recall if he’d ever used it, even when they were kids. It was always ‘Princess’ or ‘Your Highness.’ Never Zelda.
And she realized just how DIRE the situation was.
This wasn’t supposed to happen. He wasn’t supposed to be here. Her little game with the guards had backfired.
Immediately do her arms wind around Sheik’s body out of fear he may collapse at any moment, her own body now pressed flush against him in hopes that it will keep him stabilized.
Tumblr media
“Sheik! Sheik!” There is panic in her voice as she looked up at the male, gnawing anxiously at her lip as she tried to detect if he could hold on just a little longer. “We need to get you back to Kakariko — back to your house. Can you make it?”

LoZ AU- The Courage of Running Away Part TWENTY-ONE
alsdjakdsla gosh
Reminder that I’m just keeping on until the full storyline’s covered since I’m nearly to the conclusion I had planned.  If we have to have August in September so be it lmao
Go read the previous post this one starts right on its tail!
#AU August
#LoZ AU: The Courage of Running Away
King Aldway takes a moment to assess where Gray’s wound is (somewhere around the midriff) and tears a sleeve from the Sheikah coat Gray wears tied around his waist, to staunch the bleeding, then lifts the young man into his arms and tells Princess Zelda to hang on to his elbow as much as possible.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Aldway is holding Gray in a bridal carry as Gray curls against his chest, grimacing in clear agony.  There is a cloth around Gray’s midriff, although if there is any blood it’s been hidden.  Aldway is giving a concerned twist of the mouth in the direction of Princess Zelda, who is holding his arm by Gray’s legs and looking behind them with an alert and angry expression.  End ID.]
The crash in the hallway is, of course, the scarred woman’s crew, terrorizing the staff from well within the castle where patrols shouldn’t have to expect to go-- because as noted in the previous post, the Pikku aren’t on the level of Sheikah but they’ve stolen a lot of tricks and plenty of those tricks are, in fact, Sheikah tricks.
(I want you to think of the Pikku as sort of like low rent ninjas.)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Four rough and tumble seeming characters, first without fox masks and then with their fox masks.  They are labeled, left to right, as “The Burly Man,” “The Unsuspicious Girl,” “An Average Middle Aged Guy,” and “Shady Guy.”  The Burly Man has a large nose, muttonchops, a bandana, and large eyebrows, the right of which has a small scar.  The Unsuspicious girl is wearing a mischievous smile and has her hands on the shoulders of the men to either side of her, and has a round pretty face and sleepy long eyelashes.  The Average Middle Aged Guy has a narrow nose and an enormous feathery mustache.  The Shady Guy is missing his right eye and has covered his eyepatch partially with his hair, and has prominent cheekbones, and in his masked version the right half of his mask is missing.  The image is uncolored so we have no idea what anyone’s color schemes are.  End ID.]
I thought I’d just base them on thief characters from ALttP and LBW and what I got was the most hilariously ragtag crew, which I should probably have expected.  Burly Man is based on the thief archetype enemy from ALttP, Unsuspicious Girl and Shady Guy on “Theif Girl” and Shady Guy from LBW, and Average Middle Aged Guy is based on my actual favorite NPC from ALttP, An Average Middle Aged Man, yes that is his name, who you basically blackmail into picking the lock on a treasure chest so you can get the bottle inside.
They are all nicknamed in the style of those games because I’m not naming these jokers unless I have to.
Aldway leads the Pikku on a chase around the castle with Zelda at his side and Gray in his arms; he’s trying to get to the castle infirmary without running headlong into them and while he’s got the advantage of knowing where the hell he’s going it’s hard to tell who’s coming around what corner.  He’s not a fighter by any means-- Zelda chose him because he was good with business and people and administration, after all-- and he’s a big guy and he could tank if he has to, but with Gray hurt he’s got no choice but to keep them moving.
Things get turned around such that Aldway finds himself in the throne room with the kids in tow, but there’s guards here, for all that they’re confused, and when he hears someone shout over the commotion that Her Majesty the Queen is incoming, he thinks he can breath a sigh of relief.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image descriptions: The Shady Guy says to the Scarred Woman, “Boss there’s NO getting PAID enough to deal with the whole royal guard under the Queen’s orders!”  The Scarred Woman answers, “You’re right,” and pulls forth a glowing green diamond with triangular sides, “But our client provided a contingency-” and she shatters it at her feet.  Smoke rises to the ceiling, a shadowy form coalescing within... and as the smoke parts, it reveals a silver skinned Hinox missing one ear and covered in white hair down its back and enormous arms, with much longer tusks than average and slather, snot and tears running down its face, its single eye furious and enraged and its blue tongue lolling.  It leans forward and screams with a force to shake the room.  The Scarred Woman stands behind it, but her reaction if any is unreadable due to the mask.  End ID.]
This motherfucker promptly sends the room into havoc and Aldway and Princess Zelda scrambling for safety, Gray still in Aldway’s arms.
And that’s when Hera the loftwing, guided by Astramorus and carrying both Link and Queen Zelda, drops onto the balcony outside, the others’ loftwings landing where they can.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Link, Queen Zelda and Astramorus are staring in horror at what’s presumably the Hinox wreaking carnage.  Link has his sword in hand.  “Hylia’s grace,” Zelda says faintly.  Link’s face shifts to determination and he starts forward.  “Well, it’s not the FIRST hinox I’ve had to kill with a sword,” he says.  Zelda’s head snaps to Astramorus, who flushes in ashamed embarrassment and averts his eyes as she roars, furiously, “It’s not WHAT?!”  End ID.]

Crush (Link x Reader)
Character: Link
Fandom: The Legend of Zelda
Tags: Crushes, fluff, love confessions
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1k words
Requested by anon: I'd like to request a 'Ficlet' where female!reader (gender neutral!reader would also be totally fine) hears Link talk to someone about his crush on reader, but she doesn't realize that he is talking about her so she asks him later who his crush is?
A/N: I haven’t really seen Link talking in any of the Zelda games I played and it’s really hard for me to picture him doing so (I headcanon him as mute, don’t know if it’s actually canon) so I wrote this a bit differently. Hope you still like it! 😄
A/N2: Set in Twilight Princess since it’s the game I’m most familiar with.
Tumblr media
Link x Female Reader
_
You finally found him, feeling your heart skip a beat in excitement at the sight of him. Already lifting your hand to wave at him, you headed in his direction. However, you realized he was busy talking to someone and lowered your arm. As you absently walked towards them, your eyes were glued to the figure facing her back to you. Link watched her fondly, an emotion reflected in his eyes that made you boil with jealousy. Ilia laughed at that moment, playfully shoving him a little and making him chuckle.
Your crush on him seemed to grow more intense each day, and it only caused you pain to realize he was crushing on someone else.
“Link!”  You called him, needing to gather his attention when you noticed how close they really were.
They turned their heads to you at the sound of your voice, and so you hurried to reach them. However, you were too preoccupied with them and weren’t looking where you were going. You tripped and tumbled to the ground, being more hurt by the fact that they were watching than by the impact.
“Y/N!” Ilia rushed to your side, closely followed by Link. He didn’t lose one second to take your arm and pull you to your feet.
“Sorry…” You muttered, feeling yourself blushing and too embarrassed to hold their gazes. “I’m okay”
You dared to look up at Link, and found with his warm blue eyes. As soon as your gazes locked, he dedicated you a sweet smile that made you forget about the embarrassment.
There was suddenly a big ruckus as many pairs of feet hurried your direction, cheerfully running and shouting. The kids had apparently seen the whole thing as well and wanted to participate in the moment. You looked at Ilia in anticipation of their shenanigans.
“He likes her! Link likes her a lot!” They were chatting between giggles. When you glanced at Link, he was blushing in response to their teasing. Even they thought he had a crush on Ilia.
“Alright…” She laughed a little. “Let’s go, Y/N and Link have to talk”
When the group dispersed, you were left alone with Link. He hadn’t let go of your arm, and hidden under the usual friendly expression there was a lingering concern in his face.
“I’m alright” You looked down to yourself, noticing your knees had been scrapped but otherwise you were unharmed.
Nodding his head, Link finally let go of you. The absence of his gentle fingers left your skin cold, and you already missed his touch. You wanted nothing more than to hug him and cuddle him. However, this sappy craving reminded you of your unrequited crush and of the fact that Link had a crush of his own.
“Thanks, Link” You told him, suddenly feeling like you needed a moment alone. You didn’t know if he understood this or if he just was about to leave on his own, but he stepped away from you.
As soon as he left, you heaved a sigh. After all this time knowing Link and even after you developed your crush on him, it seemed like you would remain friends. He had never shown other interest in you, and it didn’t seem like he would start to now.
_
You sat by the water, absently splashing with your feet and watching the fish swim. The village was calm, and that bit alone had given you time to think. You were at peace, resigned to the situation with Link. No matter what, you cared about him and so did he. You were okay with being his friend as long as he stayed in your life.
Your thoughts seemed to have summoned him, because he suddenly appeared next to you. Looking up at him from your sitting position, you dedicated him a smile. Taking that as an invitation, he sat by your side and held up a small jar containing a thick creamy substance.
“What is that?” You curiously asked him, to which he took you by the elbow. It was only when he did that you realized you had scrapped them too when you fell. “Oh”
Link chuckled a little as he opened the jar and began gathering some on his fingers. It warmed your heart to see he was thoughtful enough to get some ointment for your bruises, all the more when he delicately held your arm to apply the medicine to your elbows.
“Can I ask you something?” You uttered suddenly, being too moved by the need to know.
He stopped a moment to look up at you and nod his head. Then he continued his ministrations and intently listened to what you had to say, turning his head in your direction even as he focused on his task.
“Do you have a crush on Ilia? Are you dating?” Your stomach churned, and you realized you weren’t over it as you had thought, as you had tried to convince yourself. It was too soon to move on from your feelings for him. “I’ve heard you like someone and…”
Link gasped, suddenly fumbling with the jar in his hands and nearly dropping it. You watched him intently. He seemed flustered by your staring and heaved a sigh.
“Link?” You tried again, noticing something odd in his demeanor. “Is it Ilia?”
Having been friends for so long, you expected him to admit him. OF course, being shy and bashful, but admitting that he liked her nonetheless. However, Link averted his gaze and refused to look at you. A growing suspicion started in your gut, bringing heat to your face.
“L-Link?” You stuttered, finally causing him to glance at you.
He timidly chuckled, playing with the jar between his hands. As you stared into his eyes, you didn’t say anything. You couldn’t. After that moment with Ilia and your jealousy, you felt incredibly silly.
“Really, me?” You dared to ask, earning a nervous nod from him. Surprised and stupidly happy, you couldn’t contain a chuckle.
For a moment, none of you moved, but then you did. Encouraged by your excitement, you leaned closer and kissed him in the cheek. Link laughed a little, violently blushing at the gesture and putting his head on your shoulder. You let him, enjoying the moment as you finally had what you had been wanting for so long.

Chapter 10
Kristoff, Anna, Ryder, and Sven were all scrunched together in that order on the sofa, watching Ryder play Breath of the Wild on the TV.
“So let me get this right,” Kristoff said, “it’s called ‘The Legend of Zelda’ but you’re Link, the guy who has to save Zelda?”
“Yup,” Ryder responded, most of his attention devoted to the game.
“And you’ve never been able to play as Zelda?”
“Nope.”
“Wow, sucks for Link,” Kristoff said. “He does all the hard work and Zelda gets the glory.”
“Well, she’s still a major figure in the games.”
“Yeah, but isn’t she not in some? And Link is in every one?”
“Well, yeah, but—”
“So it should be ‘The Legend of Link,’ right?”
“Well, no, because Link is supposed to be a player avatar. You can name him other things, too, so it wouldn’t make sense if—”
“Wait, you can name him something else in this game but you decided to name him Link?”
“No, you can’t name him something else in this game, because this is the first game with voice actors in it, so—”
“These games have never had voice actors? ”
“ VETO!! ” Sven shouted and shot up from the couch.
“Aw, c’mon!” Anna complained. “I was having fun listening to them bicker!”
A few weeks ago, the four of them came up with the concept of a “veto”. It gave the person who declared it the power to force the other three to stop what they’re doing and do whatever that person wants.
“We are not spending another weekend like this,” Sven declared. “We are going to remind ourselves what real nature looks like. We’re going hiking, bitches!”
Sven was immediately met with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
“Ugh, fine,” Kristoff mumbled.
“Yeah, I’m okay with that,” Ryder said.
“Oh my god, that sounds so fun!” Anna squealed. “Are there good hikes around here?”
Sven seemed to begin to answer affirmatively, but the words caught in his throat. He pulled his phone from his pocket and rapidly typed something. A few seconds of silence passed.
“Yeah, of course there are!” Sven said. “Do you think I would use my veto power if I didn’t have a plan? We’re going to...um...” His words trailed off as he began scrolling furiously before suddenly stopping. “...Reinpikk Gorge! It’s got, uh...a big waterfall?”
“I’m sold,” Anna said, standing up. “Let’s go.”
“Alright, this might actually be fun,” Kristoff conceded. “Let’s be ready to go in fifteen minutes.”
* * *
Kristoff knew he was doing the thing he hates again; pretending to be excited about something for a girl. When he was seeing Samantha, he would always try to find time to go to wine tasting events with her, even though he couldn’t stand the people, the atmosphere, or the wine. She loved those things for reasons Kristoff could never really understand. Hiking was another one of those activities; he tried to feign excitement as much as he could for Anna’s sake.
But if he was being honest with himself, the moment they rolled into the parking lot of the park, he found himself drawn to its natural beauty. He’d done landscaping work on multiple occasions; he had to admit nothing compared to the real thing.
“I mean, just look at that, guys,” Sven said emphatically. “I hope everyone is now realizing just how brilliant of an idea this was, thank you, thank you, tips are not necessary but very much appreciated.”
“Give it a couple hours and a few dozen mosquito bites,” Kristoff said, half-sarcastically.
“You ever heard of bug spray, wise guy?” Sven said.
“I’m just excited to bother you guys about all the different plants,” Ryder chimed in.
Anna was silently giddy, eager to be in nature, happy to be past her problems with Kristoff, and glad to be such close friends with the three of them. As they all climbed out of Sven’s car and prepared for the hike, she could feel her excitement growing. She began to wander away from the car, Sven and Kristoff too caught up in their own argument to notice.
“Uh, Anna?” Ryder called after her. “Where are you going?”
“Oh, is nobody following me?” Anna said, spinning on her heels and noticing Sven and Kristoff still at the car. “Hey, guys! We get it, you’re an old married couple, now come on!”
Kristoff found himself once again getting wrapped up in Anna’s own excitement. He caught up to Anna while Sven did his best to stifle his urge to shout after him. After all, this was his idea, and if Kristoff was only going to be excited because of Anna, then Sven would happily take that.
* * *
“You have no idea where we are, do you?” Kristoff asked Sven.
“Hush, getting lost is half the fun!” Anna said, slapping Kristoff’s arm with the back of her hand.
“So I’ve been seeing a lot of perennial weeds, which means we’re near water,” Ryder said.
“Yeah, obviously we’re near water, Ryder,” Kristoff grumbled. “That’s one of the defining characteristics of a gorge.”
“No, I mean we’re closer to water than we were,” Ryder corrected. “There’s also a higher concentration of evergreens, which is important because--”
“Okay, we get it, Doctor Plant,” Sven teased. “Look, none of y’all had to follow me off the trail, I just wanted to channel my inner Lara Croft.”
Anna imagined Sven in a too-small blue tank top and tiny brown shorts. She was amused as much as she was repulsed by the image. She couldn’t deny that she wanted to be a little adventurous as well; she hadn’t been this immersed in nature since she and Elsa left her parents. She looked to her right and spotted a large boulder, covered in cracks and crags, perfect for climbing.
“Hey, Kristoff, can you come over here? I need a spotter,” Anna said, already walking off in the direction of the giant rock.
“Wait, Anna, we should--” Kristoff turned to see Sven striding confidently away, Ryder close behind studying the flora. He let out a sigh, but if he was being honest with himself, this was an ideal scenario. Just him and Anna, completely alone, separated from everyone by a veil of nature. Completely unafraid to be himself. He quickly caught up to Anna.
“God, I forgot how fun this is,” Anna remarked, searching for a handhold on the rock face. “Did you ever do anything like this?”
“No, not really,” Kristoff answered absentmindedly, his gaze affixed on Anna’s ponytail fluttering in the gentle breeze.
“I used to go rock climbing all the time,” Anna said as she began to scale the rock, making Kristoff nervous. “I used to…” Anna’s words trailed off as she strained to reach a new handhold, trying to plant her feet where her hands had just been. Kristoff moved under her, his hands upturned, prepared to catch her if she slipped.
“You used to…?” Kristoff said.
“Oh yeah, I used to have a dream of...of climbing Mount Everest, but...then I learned people...regularly die on the way--”
Suddenly, her hand slipped. She shrieked as she fell backwards off the rock. She hung in the air for a second that felt like an eternity. Her heart rose and her stomach dropped, her hands grasped fruitlessly at the air, and her breath caught in her throat. She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the impact with the ground.
The impact wasn’t harsh or abrupt, but rather warm and soft, like she collided with a giant teddy bear. She opened her eyes to see herself in an undignified position on Kristoff’s lap, who had collapsed onto his rear end when she fell into him. She looked up at his face just in time to hear him say “Jesus, Anna, are you okay?”
Typical, Anna thought. The two of them going to Ikea alone, her falling onto him after being separated from the other two—it’s like the universe was begging them to get together. She pressed her hand to her heart and found that it was racing, threatening to burst out of her chest. It was the combination of exertion, shock, and the sudden contact with Kristoff causing her heart rate to skyrocket.
“Yeah, I’m—I’m fine,” Anna stammered, readjusting herself, but not yet climbing out of Kristoff’s embrace. “I’m glad I asked you to follow me.” She laughed nervously.
“No kidding,” Kristoff said. “How about we just walk from now on?”
“Or you could carry me,” Anna responded, laying one arm around his neck.
Kristoff laughed. “No, no, we’re not doing that,” he said as he stood up, hoisting Anna onto her feet. “Come on, let’s see what’s on the other side of this.”
They started walking parallel to the wall Anna had just tumbled from. They didn’t say anything to each other for a little while, comfortable with just being alone with each other. Then, Kristoff remembered they had never finished their conversation from earlier.
“So, you wanted to climb Mount Everest?”
Anna snorted. “Yeah, but then I started doing research on what it would take to achieve that, and I decided it just wasn’t worth it.” Her eyes wandered, her words and her mind out of sync with each other. “And, y’know, I had other goals, more realistic ones, like starting my own animal shelter, officiating my sister’s wedding, making a perfect crème brûlée, stuff like that. And some of them I’ve already achieved, like making a group of friends on my own, being a better person than my parents are, finding someone I want to spend the rest of…” Her words trailed off. She snapped her head to look at Kristoff. “Am I talking too much? Is any of this TMI? I’m sorry if it is, I just--”
“Anna, you’re totally fine,” Kristoff chuckled. “Honestly it’s inspiring to hear about your goals, considering...well…” Kristoff shrugged, then hunched his shoulders. His eyes pointed at the ground. “...I’ve never really had goals like that.”
“Really?” Anna asked. “You’ve never wanted something so deep in your bones that you would, like, jump into a volcano to get it?”
“No, not really,” Kristoff admitted, almost embarrassed to say, knowing how driven and determined Anna was by contrast. “My parents...well, they settled in a big way. My dad had a promising career as an architect and my mom could have easily sung at the Met if she wanted to, but they both agreed to give up their potential to live much simpler lives.” Kristoff sighed, a sound dripping with regret. “Their decision must have rubbed off on me.”
“Wow, Kristoff,” Anna said, doing her best to sympathize. “I’m really sorry.”
“No need to be,” Kristoff said. “I’m fine.”
Anna knew he wasn’t fine. He looked at his face to see his normally boyish features locked in contemplation, making him appear older than he was.
“Well, you know what, Kristoff?” Anna began with an encouraging tone. “Now’s as good of a time as any. Let’s come up with some goals for you!”
Kristoff smiled a sad smile. “You don’t need to do that for me.”
“You say that like I don’t want to. I do,” she retorted. “Before my mom was a bitch, she was a guidance counselor, and I learned a few things from her.”
Kristoff’s sad smile turned cheerful, despite how he tried to oppress it; the tiny wrinkle on the bridge of his nose betrayed his true feelings. “Alright, why not?”
“Yay!” Anna clapped her hands a few times before gathering herself. “So before we come up with any giant goals, let’s start with small ones. Is there something you’ve wanted to do for a while, but never gotten around to it?”
Kristoff hummed and made a show of scratching his head. “Well...I guess...I’ve always wanted to read the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.”
“Okay, that’s a great start! Were you a big reader as a kid?”
“Yeah, but ‘Lord of the Rings’ always felt out of reach to me, and by the time I was old enough I--well, the friends I hung out with were way more into sports, so I just kinda stopped reading.”
“Well, I know it’s cliché at this point, but there’s no time like the present!” Anna’s words were bursting with optimism, their infectious energy broadening Kristoff’s smile.
“Yeah, it’s true. I guess that’s why it’s a cliché, right?” They smiled at each other, their eyes sparkling with each other’s light.
Anna blinked, coming out of her daze. “Okay, so what else?” She vaulted over a rock the size of a large dog while Kristoff walked around it. “Any places you want to see? Any skill you want to learn?”
“Oh my god, I used to want to play the accordion!” Kristoff said, his head craning back like the memory struck him in the forehead.
“Really!?” Anna exclaimed, a wave of giddy excitement rushing through her.
“Yeah, I used to be really into Weird Al when I was a little kid. But I ended up getting a guitar one Christmas instead.”
“Okay, so as your guidance counselor, I would tell you to get an accordion for yourself. As your roommate, well, not so much.”
“What about a guitar?”
“A guitar’s fine, a guitar’s nice and quiet.” Anna smiled broadly. “See? You already have two goals: read ‘Lord of the Rings’ and learn guitar! Who knows, you might start a ‘Lord of the Rings’ band in the future!”
“Yeah,” Kristoff said, something else piquing his interest. “Do you hear that?”
“Hear what?” Anna said, suddenly nervous. They stood in silence for a bit before Kristoff turned and walked in the direction of whatever he was hearing.
“Kristoff, wait!” She hurried after him. “We shouldn’t--” she started to say, but then she heard what Kristoff must have been hearing too: a massive volume of water, a sound that could only be coming from a waterfall. She rushed ahead of Kristoff, eager to see what had sold her on the hike in the first place.
First, she saw the enormous granite wall of the gorge that the water had carved out of the earth. There were shrubs and small trees dotting the surface, but for the most part the rock was bare, providing a stark contrast with the scenery of the rest of the hike. Then she saw the top of the waterfall, the river above it roiling and churning as it tumbled over the edge. Finally, once she reached the lip of the gorge, she looked down at the entirety of the waterfall as a joyful smile spread across her face.
The water leapt and danced over the rocks as it tumbled downward. Mist lifted from the torrent, forming a rainbow that arced from the top of the waterfall to the base of the gorge. At the bottom, the water gathered in a swirling mass and continued deeper into the dense forest, unimpeded and unshaken, just as it had been at the top of the waterfall.
Kristoff caught up with her and had a similar, albeit subdued, reaction. His eyes were fixed more on Anna than they were on the natural splendor. He loved seeing her this happy and excited. He loved it more than he cared to admit to himself. If this is what it took for her to be as happy as she was, he would take her hiking every day at a different gorge each time, and then cut new gorges directly into the earth once she had seen them all.
He decided at that moment that he wasn’t going to hide his feelings for her anymore. He wanted to be with her.
“Hey, Anna?” Kristoff asked.
“Look at this, Kristoff!” Anna shouted, her voice full of reverence. “It’s so, so beautiful! I can’t believe it!” She giggled and laid a hand on Kristoff’s arm. “I’m really glad we’re seeing this together. It’s just so...so…” She waved her hand in the air, like it would help her find the right word. “...I don’t know, I just like doing things with you! When we’re by ourselves, you and me, I just feel like I can be excited, and I am excited about this waterfall and this hike, and you, and…” Again, she let her words trail off before elaborating further. “Sorry. Was there something you wanted?”
Kristoff stifled his nerves. He knew he fucked up once with her, but he also knew he’d been forgiven; it was part of the reason why it was so easy to fall back in love with her.
“...Can I, um...can I kiss you?”
Anna’s eyes popped. She wasn’t expecting him to say anything like that any time soon. Her reaction made Kristoff even more nervous.
“I mean, uh…” Kristoff stammered. “I--well, I would like to. I may? I mean, ay mi? Uh...may I? You don’t have to, I just, um…” Kristoff decided to stop talking. Fully expecting a rejection at this point, he began to turn away.
Anna didn’t even expect herself to do what she did next. She turned his face back toward her gently with her hand, stood on her tiptoes, and delicately laid her lips on his. Kristoff returned the kiss, a less graceful one, but a kiss all his own. A vulnerable, tender gesture of love.
Anna lowered herself, smiling gently, her lower lip tucked between her teeth. But when she noticed Kristoff’s unsure expression, her own face twisted in concern.
“Was that okay?” she asked.
Kristoff’s eyes darted to the side. His lips were pursed and twisted to the side. Anna was beginning to fear she did something terribly wrong.
Kristoff inhaled through his mouth, preparing to speak, but then shut it again. He tilted his head, like a puppy trying to figure out where a sound was coming from. Anna was all but mortified at this point. She thought her potential relationship with Kristoff was ending before it began, right before her eyes.
Finally, Kristoff spoke.
“Do you want to go out with me?”
All of Anna’s tension dissipated in an instant.
“Jesus, Kristoff, that was terrifying!” she shouted, slapping him on the arm.
“Oh my--I’m sorry! Really, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for it to be!” Kristoff apologized.
“I thought you hated me! It looked like you were--oh, yes, by the way, I’d love to--but holy shit, don’t ever do that again.”
Kristoff smiled bigger than he had all day, embarrassed by his ambiguous reaction to the kiss, but also elated that she still had feelings for him. “Okay, okay, I promise. But also, yay!” he said.
Now it was Anna’s turn to look puzzled. “So, what changed? You were asking for space not too long ago.”
Kristoff responded without missing a beat. “I can’t afford to deny my feelings for you anymore.”
Anna blushed and gave Kristoff a quick peck on the cheek. “I won’t if you won’t.”
All of a sudden, Ryder and Sven emerged from the trees behind them.
“Are you guys done?” Sven asked.
Kristoff and Anna both turned to face them. “Have you guys been right behind us the whole time?” Anna asked.
“It was Sven’s idea!” Ryder accused.
“Not that bullshit again,” Sven said to Ryder. “Not the whole time,” he continued, turning back to Kristoff and Anna. He walked right up to the edge of the gorge. “Guys, can you make way for your king, please?” That, or a variation of it, is what Sven would say when he wanted a picture taken of him. Kristoff stepped down behind Ryder and Anna followed him.
“I need a pic of me in nature to balance out my Grindr profile,” Sven said to Kristoff. “That was kinda the whole motivation behind this trip for me.”
“Wait, your what?” Anna asked, like she had just heard a grand revelation.
Sven, Ryder, and Kristoff all slowly turned to look at her, each with the same expression on their face. Complete stunned silence.
Without warning, Ryder did something that was uncharacteristic of him as long as Anna had known him. He burst into hysterical laughter.
“Anna thought you were straight this whole time!” Ryder said to Sven between fits.
“Well, no one ever told me!” Anna shouted in an effort to defend herself.
“Wait, you actually never knew?” Kristoff asked.
“I don’t know, I just didn’t pick up on it!”
“Anna, don’t even worry about it,” Sven said, opting to be the voice of reason. “They’re just being stupid. But yeah, I’m like, really gay.”
Anna’s face was beet-red, but she smiled through her embarrassment.
“Actually, you know what?” Sven said with a new inflection. “I’m a package deal. Everyone get up here, we’re taking a group selfie!”
Hearing him say that made Anna’s heart lift. She knew she was an integral member of their crew now, but every time someone reiterated that fact, it made her so happy she could burst. She wrapped her arm around Kristoff and led him up to the edge, Ryder following shortly after. Sven pulled out his phone, opened the camera app, and held it at arm’s length, trying to fit everyone on the frame.
“Kristoff, crouch down, Anna, be taller, Ryder, you’re perfect. One, two, three, say bees!”
Kristoff and Anna didn’t have to say anything to smile. They couldn’t stop smiling.

Superhero Daddy
Tumblr media
Summary: Dad!Mike and Mom!Reader construct a wild backstory to explain to the kids why Mike travels so much for work. As the kids grow older and learn the truth, they become even more convinced that Dad really is a superhero. Dad!Mike assures them that Mom!Reader was the real superhero all along.
A/N: Idea courtesy of my wonderful muse @carebearofriddles. I hope I did you justice, lovely! Might have cried a bit writing this.
Content: Cussing and a whole lot of family fluff!
And away, and away we go!
“Zelda!” Mike said, his green eyes flashing, hands going to his hips, bottom lip jutting out in a pout.
“Natasha!” you fired back, narrowing your eyes. You and Mike had been doing the baby name dance since you told him you were pregnant 7 months ago. You wanted to name your daughter after an assassin badass, he wanted the videogame princess.
“Flip you for it,” he said, pulling a coin out of his pocket.
“Fine, winner decides. Loser gets to pick the next baby’s name.”
“Deal,” he said, shaking your hand, before kissing you knuckles. “I love you, baby,” he murmured, his eyes soft.
“Just flip the coin, Clifford.”
“Call it,” he told you, flicking the coin into the air.
“Tails!” you shouted, both of you watching the coin flip end over end.
Mike’s hand snatched the coin as it tumbled towards the kitchen floor, slapping it on his wrist. “Heads! Yes!”
“Damn it!” you groaned.
He dropped to his knees, hands pushing up your shirt. He covered your swollen abdomen with kisses. “I can’t wait until you get here, Zel.”
You were still bitter about losing, but you pulled your husband’s hat off his head to run your fingers through his soft blonde hair. You couldn’t wait for him to be a dad.
~~~
“My turn,” you winked, showing him the picture of the ultrasound.
The game controller clattered to the floor. “No way,” he breathed, gripping the photo in his shaking hands.
“Yes way,” you grinned, feeling the tears well up in your eyes.
In was a blur of movement as he scooped up Zelda and gave you a rib crushing hug. “Mommy’s having a baby, Zelly!” he cheered, peppering both your face and the girl’s hair in a shower of kisses.
“Baby?” Zelda asked, her green eyes wide.
“You’re gonna be a big sister,” you smiled at her, kissing her nose.
“Baby!” she cheered.
“Baby!” you and Mike cheered with her.
When Zelda whined to be put down, Mike set her down quickly before grabbing your face in his hands. “I love you, baby,” he said, kissing you deeply.
“Parker and I love you, too, Mikey.”
“Spider-Man, huh?”
“Tom Holland is the best Spidey.”
“Don’t let Ash hear you say that,” he laughed, picking you up and spinning you both in a circle.
“You’re happy, huh?”
“The happiest. I love you so fuckin much, baby.”
~~~
“Daddy, no!” Parker and Zelda wailed, attaching themselves to either of his legs. At 6 and 4, they were too young to understand why Mike left for long periods of time, but old enough to feel the pain of his absence.
“Hey,” you said softly, crouching down next to them. “Daddy’s gotta go to work. So, you know what we’re gonna do?”
“What?” they asked, tearfully.
“We’re gonna cover him in kisses, so he can’t leave!” you shouted playfully, scooping both of them up and group hugging Mike to the bed.
“No!” Mike shouted, equally playfully. “Not the kiss monsters! Help!”
“Daddy?” Zelda asked, once you had all stopped giggling.
“Yeah, princess?”
“Why do you have to leave for work? Why can’t you stay home like Mommy does?”
Mike sighed and sat up, pulling each kid to either of his sides. “I’m gonna tell you a secret, okay? Can you keep it?”
“Promise,” they both told him, their eyes solemn.
“I’m a superhero from the Land of Z,” he told them.
“Like Superman?!” Parker asked, his eyes wide in amazement.
“Psh,” you scoffed, going along with the bit, “Superman wishes he was Daddy.”
“Are you and Uncles like the Avengers?” Zelda asked excitedly.
“Yeah!” Mike told her. “And we have to go save the world sometimes. That’s why I’m gone so much.”
“Where’s the Land of Z, Daddy?” Parker asked.
“Well, you know where Granddad and Grandmum live? It’s there.”
“Wow,” both kids said in wonder. “That’s far.”
Mike nodded. “Very far. And they need our help. So, I’m gonna go away with you uncles for a little bit, and you’re gonna stay here with Mommy to keep her safe for me, alright?”
“Do you and Uncles have costumes?” Zelda asked.
“‘Course we do!” he told her, pulling out his phone to show her an old photo from the Don’t Stop video.
“Uncle Cal’s is funny,” Parker snickered.
“It is,” you and Mike agreed with a laugh.
~~~
“Daddy, you missed bedtime,” Zelda pouted at the phone, one morning at breakfast.
“I know, princess. I’m sorry,” he told her. “I’ll call tonight, okay?”
“Promise?”
“Pinky promise. Where’s Mommy and Bubba?”
“They’re here,” she sighed, twirling in a circle to show you and Parker in the shot.
“Daddy, did you get the bad guys?” Parker asked from your lap, making grabby hands at the phone.
“Of course, I did!”
“So, you can come home now, right?” the little boy asked, his lip quivering. Mike had been gone for 2 months. Each day got harder as Mike got busier. The texts were either sent in the middle of the night or not at all. Phone calls got dropped from bad reception. It was something you had grown indifferent to long ago, but watching the disappointment in your kids eyes made tears well up in your own. You all missed each other terribly, but that was the life being married to a superhero.
Mike rubbed at the back of his neck. “Uh, not yet, Bubba.”
“Why not?” Parker asked, angrily crossing his arms.
“Because… the party!” you said, coming up with an explanation of the top of your head.
“Yeah, the party!” Mike agreed, smiling at you. “See, the Zeddians, they… they loved our help so much that they’re planning this big party for us. I can’t just leave, Bubba. That would be rude.”
“Oh…” Parker said, accepting the answer.
“Daddy!” Zelda said, her green eyes shining brightly with an idea.
“Yeah, princess?”
“You should sent us postcards and pictures! So we can see!”
“That’s a great idea! I’ll send you guys some tomorrow, okay?”
“Okay!”
“Now, let Mommy have her phone back. I love you, guys,” he said to the kids.
“Love you,” they told him, blowing him kisses as Zelda handed you your phone back.
You smiled as you walked out of the kitchen, leaving the kids to their breakfast. “I miss you, baby,” he said.
“I miss you too, Mikey.”
“I’ll be home soon.”
“I know. Don’t worry about us, Mikey. Send the guys my love.”
“Have I told you lately how amazing you are, and how lucky I am to have you?”
“Don’t,” you warned softly, feeling the tears well up in your eyes. “Don’t do that.”
He smiled softly. “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. Even if you think what you do is nothing special, it is. You’re the real superhero, standing by my side through my less than traditional lifestyle.”
“No one else I’d rather stand by.”
“I love you, baby.”
“I love you, too.”
~~~
“What are you guys doing?” Mike laughed, noticing the small bodies giggling up a storm underneath the kitchen table.
“Nothing!” they said quickly.
He crouched down, but two sets of hands angrily pushed at him. “No!” they told him.
“Alright, alright,” he relented, standing back up with a laugh.
One blonde head poked it’s way out of the table. “Daddy?” Parker asked.
“Yeah, Bubba?” he asked the now 6 year old.
“Can we watch the videos again?”
“What videos?”
“The ones of you and Uncles speaking Zeddian.”
Mike laughed, unlocking his phone and handing it to the boy. “I’m trusting you. Videos only.” He didn’t need the PR disaster that was random Tweets from his trouble-maker kids.
“Promise,” Parker told him, holding up his pinky.
~~~
“What the fuck?” you whispered, irritated, looking at the empty shoebox.
“What’s wrong?” Mike asked from his spot in bed.
“All your postcards and pictures. I keep them in this box. They’re all gone.”
“What do you mean they’re all gone?”
“It’s empty, Mikey!” you said, chucking the box at him in your frustration.
“Whoa, calm down. I can send you more,” he said, getting up and wrapping you in his arms.
“That’s not the point, Mikey,” you said, tears in your eyes.
“They gotta be around here somewhere,” he told you, hands rubbing up and down your back. He knew exactly where they were. After he had put the kids to bed, he had crawled under the kitchen table to see what they had been up to. The underside of the kitchen table was now a carefully crafted masterpiece of the Land of Z, with hand drawn pictures intermingled with the postcards and pictures, and smack dab in the center was a drawing of all 4 SuperSos men, their real photo beside each crayon depiction. He knew you would be furious if you found out what the kids had turned your kitchen table into, but he could help it, he had laid underneath the table for a good hour, tears streaming down his face. They really thought he was a superhero. If only they knew the real superhero was their mother.
~~~
“Oh, God damn it,” you muttered, hands quickly scrambling to catch the coffee cup and it headed for the edge of the table. “Mikey, we really need a new kitchen table. This one’s on its last legs.”
“No!” Mike, Parker, and Zelda screamed at you. Parker and Zelda had caught Mike under the table- 4 years after the creation was first made- admiring like he always did when he thought he was alone, and they had all sworn each other to secrecy before digging into your shoebox to add more memories.
Your hands went up defensively. 10 years later and you still had no idea what lay beneath the table. “What do you suggest we do instead?” you laughed.
“I’ll call someone to fix it,” Mike promised. “The table stays.”
“You are weirdly attached to a table, Mikey,” you said with an eye roll.
“It’s the family table, Mom,” Zelda said. “It’s as much as part of this table as any of us.”
“Yeah, it’s family, Mom,” Parker added.
“Fuckin weirdos… Alright. Fix my table, Mikey.”
~~~
“Damn it, Mikey,” you cursed, as the cup skittered towards the edge of the table.
“What?”
“You said you fixed the table.”
“I did!” he protested. Over a weekend, the guys had come over and they remade the legs on the table. But that had been 5 years ago, which meant 5 more years worth of traveling was tacked up underneath. The kids had learned the truth right around the time they had caught Mike and made their secret pact, but they still would rummage through your shoebox to add to the masterpiece, steadfast in their believe that Dad was still a superhero, just in a much cooler sense.
“Well, fix it again, or we got to get rid of it,” you told him.
“C’mon,” he said, crawling underneath the table.
“What are you doing?” you laughed.
“C’mon,” he said again, a hand gesturing for you to follow as his body twisted and he laid down on his back.
“Mikey, I swear to- oh, wow…” you breathed as you joined him underneath the table and peered up. “Mikey…”
“It wasn’t me. Well, not at first. It was the kids.”
“When did this happen?”
“Uh, I think Parker was 6 when they first did it. Yelled at me to go away. Then, they caught me under here when Parker was 10 and we’ve been adding to it together ever since.”
“So, this is why my box is always empty,” you realized, tears streaming down your face. “My beautiful table…”
“Our beautiful table,” he corrected.
“Our beautiful life,” you corrected even more.
~~~
“Hey, where the table?” Parker demanded, walking into the house on Christmas morning, his girlfriend, Ava in tow.
“Merry Christmas to you, too,” you scoffed, hugging your son.
“Merry Christmas, Mom,” he rushed. “Dad, what the fuck happened? You let her get rid of it?”
“We didn’t get rid of shit, Bubba. Go check the living room.”
Parker lit up like the small boy he used to be as he ran to the living room. “Holy shit!” he laughed, covering his mouth with his hands. “How pissed was Mom?”
“Surprisingly not at all,” Mike said, wrapping an arm around his son’s shoulder.
“Oh, man. Zel’s gonna freak the fuck out… Ava, come look at this.”
“What is it?” the young woman asked, coming to look up at the masterpiece.
“The Land of Z,” Parker said. “Oh, man…”
“What are you all looking a- oh fuck!” Zelda said, coming into the house, her fiance Nick in tow. “Oh, Dad! This is great!”
“It wasn’t me. Your mom put it up,” Mike said.
“Surprise,” Zelda laughed sheepishly at you.
“Oh, it was a surprise, alright,” you said.
6 pairs of eyes looked up at the table hanging on the wall, 4 with tears in their eyes, 2 in confusion.
“I don’t get it,” Nick whispered.
“Me neither,” Ava whispered back.
“It’s the Land of Z,” four voices answered.
~~~
“You don’t understand the lengths we went through for you guys!” you laughed as you all sat around, reminiscing and filling in Ava and Nick on the Land of Z. “Your dad made me wear a glittery cowboy hat he stole from Uncle Lu.”
“I never got that hat back,” Luke laughed. “Loved that thing…”
“Cowboy hats aren’t glittery, Lucas!”
“They are if you’re an eccentric cowboy from the Land of Z!” Luke said defiantly.
“So, this was all made up?” Nick asked, squeezing Zelda’s hand.
“Well sort of. The places Dad went to were real. The Land of Z is our grandparents house in Australia. The superhero costumes were real. But the language was definitely made up,” Zelda explained.
“Language?” Ava asked, looking at Parker.
“Yeah, Zeddian, the language of the Zeddians,” Parker said. “What is it actually?”
“A mixture of English, French and Spanish with a bit of nonsense,” you said.
“Is this why you became an author, Zel?” Nick asked.
She nodded. “It’s why Parker went into videogames, too. Dad always encouraged us to be creative.”
“Yeah, Dad’s a superhero,” Parker grinned.
“Your mom’s the superhero. I’m just the super dork she was crazy enough to marry.”
“Our beautiful table,” you smiled at your husband of 25 years.
“Our beautiful life.”
(Don’t) Remember
Prompt
Summary: Wild was completely content going the rest of his life not remembering the past.
-o-o-o-o-
The first time Link has ever gained a memory, he vowed it would be the last. He climbed up to the base of Mount Lanayru and oh so innocently opened his Sheikah Slate to look at the picture, the memory. He remembers being excited. He had nothing back then, nothing but the few days he had gained since waking up at the shrine. There was a odd feeling that took over him as he compared the scenery to the picture, then he blinked and he found himself one hundred years in the past.
The memory was only a minute or two, but the moment he was back to reality, back in his own body, he kneeled over the vomited. He remembers feeling useless and terrified. He was that hero? He was supposed to stop that evil? It made him sick to his stomach, it made him tremble and shake and sob into the the cool dirt beneath him. He panicked and cried and stayed there for a very long time, trying to get ahold of himself. It was by luck the Lynel on the other side of the wall didn't hear him. He wouldn't have been able to defend himself.
He went back to Kakariko when he had finally gotten himself under some sort of control. He marched into Impa's house and told her he will save the princess, he will destroy ganon, but he does not need his memories to do so. Impa looked surprised, shocked even, that Link would refuse to remember any of the past, though she probably knew that there would be no changing his mind, so she simply nodded and told him to go free the Divine Beasts.
That too became difficult for Link to do. He remembers standing at a Zora girls stature and falling unwillingly into a memory about her healing him, about the hope she had that Calamity Ganon would be a simple story to tell to the future generations. Link tumbled back into his body and panicked right there in front of Sidon and that Muzu. He doesn't know if he lost respect that day, but he still was able to go to Vah Ruta and free it.
Then he was looking at a beautiful helmet sitting on the head of Riju and he could feel the memory coming. He couldn't prepare himself for when it smashed into him. He was forced inside the memory, forced to watch Urbosa and Zelda bond as he, the unwanted soldier, stood by. Urbosa had faith in him. She shouldn't have. He was just barely able to control himself when he returned to the present. After agreeing with Riju that they should head over to free Vah Naboris as soon as possible, he stumbled over to a quiet alleyway and let out the contents of his stomach and stayed there a long time, dry heaving and just barely managing to hold back tears.
And it was the same when he went to the Gorons and he saw that statue of Daruk. The same when he visited the Rito and looked at the landing pad. He was dragged into memories and he came out terrified and trembling and wishing he could forget. The memories were all too painful. They weren't worth it. He could swing a sword, the Master Sword even, just fine without them. He avoided the spots where his other memories laid and he continued his journey, his quest to get stronger, and finally he went to defeat Ganon.
He did it just fine without his memories.
"Tell me, do you really remember me?" She asked, and Link replied no, he didn't.
She seemed sad at that, but Link tried to comfort her to the best of his abilities. The old hero from a hundred years ago was dead, but Link now is alive and he would like to get to know her on his own terms.
And he did, and he never regretted it.
But, little did he know, there was another surprise memory waiting to be stumbled upon. The worst one.
The one of how he died.
-o-o-o-o-
They are at the Dueling Peaks Stable. After traveling for so long, the simple stable seems like such a blessing. Wild certainly is relieved to see it. Everyone are in low moods from the large amount of traveling they have just suffered through, most of them are starting to get snappy and full of complaint. Thankfully, just a few minutes of sitting and resting at the stable improves the spirits of the group dramatically.
Wild sits down at the campfire and happily begins to set up for dinner. Wind, Sky, and Hyrule follow after the stable master where he shows them how to care for the sheep. Four is laying in the grass, smiling joyfully as his eyes close contently. Warrior and Legend are enjoying a passive aggressive game of cards. Twilight and Time are inside the stable, setting it up with the second stable master of how to arrange beds and blankets with the sudden amount of guests, or more like trying to discuss how to pay for that. They're being demanded to pay more money because of their excessive amount of numbers. The stable isn't even relenting to Wild being there.
"Did you think you'd get a discount just because you have Link with you! Hah!"
Wild isn't surprised by it at all, in fact, he expected that to happen. Hyrule now is ran by survivors, if they see an opportunity to make a quick rupee, they'll take it. Time and the others aren't used to that. They're used to order, to something having a set value, and Wild will admit that even though they are going to get cheated, he still finds it amusing how much the dirty methods of his Hyrule throw everyone off.
The day passes lazily, yet no one complains about it. Soon enough, Wild has finished a rather large batch of smoked Hyrule bass for everyone in the stable (except for the stable masters of course, they'll have to give them a fair price if they want food). Since there are not enough tables for everyone, Twilight, Time, and Warrior all dragged large pieces of firewood out into the field and set them up around a campfire. The group sat in a circle together as a cool breeze began to blow across the land, as the blue sky began to turn darker and the first stars dare to show.
Wild stuffed a bite of fish in his mouth and sighed in content. It's hard being the cook because you get to smell the food while it's cooking and not get to eat it.
"So, Hyrule and I were walking around," Sky says suddenly and everyone looks up to him except for Hyrule himself; he's a bit busy taking large bites of his fish, so he just nods, "and we saw a herd of wild horses."
"There's a lot of them here," Wild replies. "They're rather tame here too, easy to catch."
"That's why Hyrule and I were thinking we try to catch a few, it would make traveling quicker."
"And easier," Wind mumbled and took a bite of his meal.
"That's a good idea," Time says as he wipes his mouth of the miniscule amount of grease that got on his lip.
"It's going to cost us some more rupees," Wild points out, "the stable can harness the ones we catch."
"We can afford it, you're fish saved us a lot of rupees," Twilight says, grinning. Wild grins back and looks back at the stable where the two stable masters are begrudgingly eating their own meals inside with the rest of the stable dwellers.
They talk a bit more about their plans for the next day and how much time they will need to capture nine horses, Wild says he can catch one per minute and no one believes him. They decide to head to Kakariko Village, it is the closest bit of civilization to them and Kakariko is something most of them have in common. The sun is completely gone now and the moon is beginning to rise as they chat.
They call it a night and gather into the stable. The stable masters have pulled out extra mattresses and every blanket they had so they could make enough sleeping spaces for everyone. Wild lets the stable dwellers get the beds and the group of heroes fall asleep, content, on the absurd amount of blankets on the floor. Well, except Warrior and Wind, they were hoping for beds. Time also is a bit grumbly about it, but that's just because he played the price for nine beds, not nine blanket nests.
"HYLIA, CURSE IT!" Legend screams as a beautiful blue and white stallion notices him sneaking up on it before running away.
Wild chuckles as he pets the nose of the black mare he had just tamed. In under a minute even. Twilight also managed to tame a horse, though his method was a bit barbaric. He wasn't expecting Twilight to full on wrestle with a horse while wearing iron boots. The mad man. Time at least had the decency to tame his horse normally.
"This place is creepy," Twilight says as he looks around the field around them. His newly captured brown and white spotted horse flicks its ear and he pats it's shoulder.
Wild hums in agreement and glances at their surroundings as well. The field itself is beautiful, it is large and filled with lovely and healthy green grass and hundreds of colorful wildflowers. What made it creepy is the maybe hundreds of lifeless guardian corpses that littered the land. They have no explanation, none of the stable dwellers know how they got there or what has killed them all. Wild didn't really care about it, whatever happened occurred a hundred years ago. Before his time.
The sound of Legend's cursing breaks through the air as Warrior gallops past on a beautiful white steed. He's grinning smugly, as if he's already planning how to rub it in Legend's face that he caught a horse first. Another Horse gallops up and Wild can see Hyrule riding on it with Wind sitting behind him. Wild hopes that their plan to get Wind a horse wasn't to launch Wind off the back of a running one, but judging by their determined looks as they got ever closer to a horse innocently munching on some wild flowers... It is clear that that is their plan exactly.
Four walks up to Wild and sits down next to him breathing hard. "I'm too small," he says, panting. Sky joins them, chest heaving as well.
"They're.… Too fast…." He says between breaths.
Wild rolls his eyes. "You guys aren't doing it right." He walks his horse over to where Time is grooming out the tangles of his horses mane. "I'll show you how it's done," he says.
Time agrees to watch Wild's horse as Wild takes off towards where a beautiful cream colored horse was nipping at the grass. Sky and Four follow along.
Legend swears again and the mare he's been chasing for the past hour streaks further away. "Legend!" Four calls out, "Wild's going to help us! You should come too!"
Legend shoots a glare over to Four and Four wears a satisfied smirk. Wild scoffs at the banter and tries not to laugh.
"Go!" Time calls out, smirking just a little.
Legend looks like he's about to refuse, but then he looks back at his runaway horse and his shoulders sink. Just like that Legend, Four, and Sky are following Wild over to the next hose.
Wild stops a small distance from the horse and crouches down ever so slightly. "Okay, first you have to make sure the horse isn't facing you."
Four elbows Legend in the stomach playfully and Legend mumbles curses under his breath. "Make sure you remember that," Four snarks.
Legend looks like he's about to argue, but then Wild hushes him with a raised eyebrow. Once it was quiet, Wild continues.
"Now, you would sneak slowly up to them, and when you're close enough you jump on. Then, comfort it so it doesn't buck you off. It's easy. Watch-"
He begins to move slowly and silently through the grass, but the horse snaps its neck behind it when Sky accidentally steps on a twig. The horse makes a distressed neigh and sprints off in the opposite direction.
"Sorry," Sky mumbles.
Wild smiles and stands up. "C'mon, let's go find it."
He runs off over to where the horse disappeared to. With the others following behind, he runs over a hill and is about to run down it when he sees the horse still again as it sniffs the flowers, but… something suddenly feels off about the area. More off than normal.
He looks down to where two guardian husks are innocently enough lying toppled on the ground and he finds himself breaking off from the others.
"Wild, the horse is that way," Legend grumbles but Wild is now ignoring them. Something… something was off. Very, very off.
He stops at the bottom of the small hill and looks at the two guardians and his mind starts to go blank. He panics when he realizes what's happening. How has he stumbled upon a memory? He has pictures of them all, and they're all places he had found so he can purposely avoid running into them. This one isn't in there.
He wants out. He wants to scream and scramble backwards because he doesn't want to know what happened here. He doesn't want to know what happened one hundred years ago. He doesn't want to know but his body is stuck, his eyes are staring at the husks and grass is tickling at his shins and Four is asking if he's alright. He would cry no, he's far from okay, if he could find his tongue. The edges of his vision is turning white and he has one final thought of terror before he's plunged into a world of fire.
-o-o-o-o-
He aches. That's the plainest way to say it. His whole body just aches. It aches as he deflects another Guardian from hitting Zelda behind him. It aches as his shield shatters. It aches as a deadly laser explodes along his side and sends him tumbling to the ground.
"Link!" Zelda screams. He can't... He can't fail her now. Not after all they have worked for. "Link, run! Get away from here, I'll be fine…"
He coughs blood into the ground but forces himself to his feet once again with his sword held out. The fire licks at his legs and his whole left side is burning like it's on fire. He can't feel his left ear. He vaguely realizes that it's been melted off.
"Link," Zelda says again, probably through tears, but he can't turn and look because there's another Guardian climbing on top of two dead ones and it's glaring it them.
He can feel his heart jump to his throat and he desperately tries to blink blood out from his eyes as the Guardian rears up and activates it's laser. Link will take this, he will take this blow for Zelda so she can run. She's too important, so important. So, so very important.
The guardian is about to fire and Link is about to close his eyes to accept his fate, but Zelda pushes him out of the way, screaming. The world tips below him and he desperately tries to find his footing. Everything explodes into beautiful golden and Link stares wide eyes at Zelda who has a glowing mark on her hand, who is killing every guardian with each pulse of golden light that erupts from her palm. He sees the guardian flicker sadly before it collapses. Zelda relaxes her posture and looks at her hand like she's surprised.
Link has just a second to think how proud of her he is, how he's not surprised, before he collapses too.
"Link? Link!"
He can feel his body being shaken and it takes all of his strength to keep his eyes open long enough to see her face, begging him not to go. To stay. To help her. "You're going to be okay, Link, we'll get help, we'll-"
Link can only smile a fraction at her before his consciousness is ripped away from him with the sound of her horrified gasp. Everything goes black.
-o-o-o-o-
"Wild?"
He's forced back into the present and he can feel every last scar on his body burn. He stumbles back, looking at the fallen Guardians in a new light that he did not want.
A hand touches his shoulder and he flinches back violently as the realization of what has happened hits him. He's just remembered something, he remembers his death. He bends over and pukes.
"Woah! Wild?!"
He tries to take a deep breath but he can't. His scars are on fire, he can feel each tendril of scarred tissue along his whole body painfully clear. He forgets to stand, and he falls to his knees and bends forward so he's leaning on his elbows, his forehead touching the ground. He's heaving for breaths and everything is so quiet but so loud at the same time.
For a second, he thinks it's like the first time, but then his stomach rebels again and a whimper is forced from his throat as his whole body twinges in agony. The air is too thick, he can't take any in, but he's desperately trying to. He hacks acid from his throat, his breakfast already out of his stomach, and he's about to continue to dry heave until he feels something touch his shoulder.
He flinches. Danger. There's danger. He has to fight- he's always fighting-
He scrambles onto his feet and pulls out his sword, facing the blurry figures in from of him. He blinks and they're Guardians, he blinks again and it's Calamity Ganon, then is Bokoblins and with each breath the enemy shifts and Wild... Link is terrified.
He swings his sword when a figure gets to close, but his weapon is instantly blocked. He can hear yelling through the ringing in his ears and he continues to fight. He has to fight. Protect Zelda. Don't die don't die don't die.
Arms wrap his arms and chest from behind and he's forced to drop his sword. He's locked against the chest of the surprise attacker and it sends his fear through the roof. He screams and kicks his legs back desperately but the restraining hold doesn't relent, it just gets tighter.
Everything is spinning and his body feels so heavy. He unwillingly slumps against his captor. He tries and fails to keep tears at bay. He can feel himself losing consciousness and he wants to fight it, he really does, but… the blackness sounds more comforting than reality.
-o-o-o-o-
Wild wakes up slowly, likes he's trying to swim through mud. Everything hurts, his chest, his head, his arms, and he almost wants to give back into sleep, but there's someone holding onto his hand.
"Wild? Are you awake, cub?"
Wild opens his eyes and blinks at the stable ceiling. He doesn't recall falling asleep here. He groans and lifts his hands to his eyes, rubbing at them until he could see clearly.
"Wild?"
"Hmm?"
He turns his head and sees Twilight sitting at the side of the bed, worry pulling his eyebrows together.
"What happened?" Wild asks. He holds back a hiss of pain as he begins to pull himself up so he's sitting.
"You tell me," Twilight says through a half-hearted chuckle. Wild gives him a look and Twilight clears his throat, sadness overtaking his features. "You… were attacking Legend, Sky, and Wind."
"W-what."
Twilight sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose. "Wild… do you remember what happened at all?"
Wild remains silent for a few seconds, wracking his brain, until he does remember.
He remembers everything.
"Oh," he chokes. "Oh."
"No- cub, don't cry-"
But Wild is. He can feel the tears running down his cheeks as he his whole body loses strength. He slumps back down so he's lying and he brings his hands to his face. He silently let's his tears fall.
"Cub, it's okay, you're okay-" Twilight's hand goes down gently on Wild's shoulder but Wild flinches. He hates that he flinches, especially to a touch from Twilight, but the thought of touch sends nausea bubbling into his stomach. Twilight's hand whips back like he's been burned. Wild doesn't know why that hurts him so much.
"What happened?" Twilight whispers.
Wild shakes his head against the back of the pillow.
"I'm sorry."
will finding out about mikes nightmares at a sleepover one night. mikes never told anyone because he always felt like he had no right to, because of everytging wills been through. will just cuddles him and tells him that of course he’s gonna be there for him, always. they’re both so in love.
[ part 1 - part 2 - part 3 - part 4 ]
crossposted to AO3
————
“We’re gonna hang with the Party tomorrow, yeah?” Mike asked as he searched through his dresser for a too-large t-shirt. It had the Hawkins High mascot on the front and he cringed to himself about being one of those people wearing their high school’s logo.
Will though hummed an affirmation from his perch on Mike’s bed. “Lucas said he’s coming over in the late morning. We’ll bike over and grab Dustin before heading to Max’s place.”
“And from there, we go into town for lunch.” Mike took off his shirt and absentmindedly stretched his arms up. He could feel Will’s gaze on him and he smiled to himself before grabbing a pair of boxers. “I’m gonna shower; feel free to snoop around or whatever.”
“Your room hadn’t changed a bit since I was gone, Mike.” Will scoffed but slipped off the bed as he padded his way to Mike’s side. “I doubt you have something to hide that I need to snoop for.”
Mike froze and really tried his best not to glance over at his desk where his antidepressants and anxiety medications resided. The bottles were in a black bag on his desk hidden away in a corner. There was something about seeing the transparent orange bottles that reminded Mike of his inability to take care of himself without aid and that reminder wasn’t one he wanted to literally see every time he came into his room. He still hadn’t found a way to tell Will about his meds or the therapy or how he heard his parents fighting and a divorce might be down the line. Will had enough issues to deal with anyway. Now that they were boyfriends, it was harder for Mike to keep the secret.
Friends don’t lie. Boyfriends especially shouldn’t lie.
Yet, here Mike was, lying through obfuscation. Never saying exactly what’s up and leaving things vague enough to not be questioned.
A wave of nausea struck Mike’s gut and he turned to his door with a shudder. “Yeah. Anyway, shower. I’ll be quick.”
Mike left the room with a quick peck on Will’s cheek. His mind was racing through various emotions, landing guilt and regret and anger and self-deprecating thoughts laced with anxiety and anguish. By the time he got to the bathroom, which wasn’t far, Mike was having some trouble breathing and he hated it. He hated the panic, the shaking of his hands, the way he couldn’t maintain basic control of how his body reacted. What type of leader was he to be losing it in the bathroom face to face with his gaunt and paper-white pale reflection? His freckles stuck out even more against his pallor skin and the boy closed his eyes with a deep breath.
Breathe, Mike remembered his therapist saying when he had an anxiety attack in the very first session where she asked him how he felt powerless about losing his friends. Breathe, focus on the five seconds you hold in your air, and then let the thoughts flow out of you as you breathe out.
Mike did as previously directed until he could no longer feel his hands shaking. He turned on the water and showered for a few minutes, taking a little more time to let the warm water massage his back with gentle pressure and calm his tense muscles. He dried off and changed in the bathroom before heading back to his room with a whistle. Will was flipping through an old comic book but looked up when he heard Mike enter the room.
Mike nearly dropped all his clothing at the sight before him. It wasn’t anything new persay; Will often word Mike’s clothing if he stayed over without packing a bag, but this—Will wearing Mike’s old t-shirts and pyjama shorts, Will wearing his boyfriend’s clothing—was definitely shocking at least. It struck Mike again that Will was his boyfriend and it wasn’t a fantasy he had been trying to ignore for years. It was only five days since Christmas Eve when Joyce and his mom accidentally revealed to the two boys that they liked each other, so it was still fresh enough in his mind, but little things like Will in his room wearing his clothing made Mike realize all over again that the boy of his dreams was really his boy in real life.
“God, I love you,” Mike whispered hoarsely, tossing his clothes in the hamper before rushing to the bed. He grabbed Will’s face and tilted his chin to kiss him. Will melted into the kiss with a soft hum. “I love you so much.”
“Love you, too, Mike.” Will pulled away and reached out to take Mike’s hand. “Any reason you’re suddenly telling me?”
“Do I need a reason? I get to tell you how I feel every day for the rest of our lives. You can bet your ass I’m gonna take every chance I can.” Mike watched Will blush furiously and he couldn’t help but kiss him again. “You and me? Best thing I’ve ever done.”
Will pulled at Mike’s shirt and flopped with him onto the bed. It was too small for the both of them, what will Mike’s height already making the bed a little too small for him on his own, but they made it work. Mike unfortunately had to squirm his way out of Will’s arms to turn off the lights but he was quick to return to Will and curl up next to him.
“Have you been thinking about any New Year’s wishes?” Will asked as darkness began to settle in the room.
“Not really. One of my wishes ended up being a Christmas gift so I have nothing else to desire really.”
“You’re talking about me, aren’t you.”
“No, I’m talking about the new Zelda game Dustin bought me.” Mike nudged his boyfriend and then leaned in for a kiss. He missed and hit only the corner of Will’s lips, which made Will laugh.
“I love you,” the smaller boy whispered in a content sigh. “It’s crazy that we can say that now. I don’t have to be afraid of loving you because you love me, too.”
Mike nodded and took a hand to Will’s hair as he brushed his fingers through it. “I was really scared I would lose you so I never said anything. And then El came into our lives.” Mike closed his eyes. “I love her but I was wrong for trying to force her to be with me. I knew it wasn’t working but I still tried. I thought we could work it out.”
“Hey, she forgives you, you know. She also thought it could work it out. She wanted it to work out just as much as you did.”
Mike still felt guilty for it all. For wanting El while loving Will. For trying so hard to ignore where his feelings really lied even though at the end of the day he still imagined waking up in the morning next to Will for reasons he never wanted to explore.
“I hurt her and I know she’s still in pain about it. She can barely stand to be in a room alone with me.”
Will overlayed Mike’s hand with his own. “Heartbreak takes time to get over. You were her first love and letting that go is painful. We should know.”
Mike laughed sarcastically. “Yeah and we failed miserably.”
“I’m glad we did,” Will kissed Mike’s nose. “My point though is that El needs time to heal and learn to be your friend again. She forgives you, trust me. She didn’t want to end things but she knew what would be best when she called it quits.”
Mike closed his eyes and listened to Will’s slow breathing. “Yeah. Do you think she’ll be happy about you being with me?”
“Of course.” Will hummed. “We’ll tell everyone on New Year’s Eve as planned. Only two days away. Get some rest now, okay?”
“Mmhmm.”
Sleep came easily when his mind managed to stop worrying about his friendship with El. The sleep itself? Mike could barely remember what he dreamt about. Things were hazy and unclear but there was blood and screams. Screams from his friends, from the people he swore loyalty to, from his mom who knew nothing and he hated the fear he had with telling her the truth. It consumed him until he couldn’t breathe, until he couldn’t hear anything but someone shouting in the distance. It was faint against the background of El’s sobbing, of her screeches as she pulled the wriggling slice of the Mind Flayer from her leg. Faint against the screams of Will burning for hours from the inside out, tears streaming down his face as he writhed in agony. Faint against the worries of his mother finding him vomiting in the bathroom one night from crying so hard and taking him to therapy that very next day despite having school.
(And god, how embarrassing it was to miss track meet and come the next day with a doctor’s note because Mike couldn’t get a stupid fucking handle on his runaway thoughts.)
“Mike!”
The boy woke from his terrors with a choked gasp, legs flaying as he struggled to escape from the blankets that suffocated him. There was a hand on his arm and he tried to pull away from it with all the strength he had, which was a lot thanks to his extra curricular studies. Mike tumbled off the bed and the shock of the fall managed to bring him back to reality. Will was hovering over the edge with wide eyes and fright screaming in his posture. Mike blinked his way out of the remains of his nightmare and felt guilt filter to the top of his emotions.
“Will,” he gasped shakily, feeling the wetness of tears drenching his cheeks. “Will, I—I didn’t mean to.”
Will climbed off the end and knelt beside Mike. He took Mike’s face in hand, ever so gentle and soft, and kissed one of the tear streaks his nightmare had drawn on his face. “It’s okay. I’m here. I’m right here, love.”
Mike couldn’t stop crying. “It’s not—it’s not usually this bad.”
“What isn’t?”
“My dreams.” Mike closed his eyes and Will kissed his eyelids, a featherlight touch on his wet skin. “My nightmares.”
“Is it often?” Mike nodded. “How long?”
“Since the Snowball.” Will tensed and Mike pushed the boy’s hands from his face. “It’s not a big deal.”
“Mike, you were crying in your sleep and kicking around and yanked yourself from my hand so hard you catapulted yourself from your bed.” Will took Mike’s face again and pressed their foreheads together. “You can talk to me about these things. You’re not alone.”
“That’s what my therapist keeps saying and yet here I am, still fucking doing this!” Mike motioned to himself on the floor and then collapsed in on himself. “I can’t make it stop, I can’t tell anyone about the truth, I can’t control myself even with my medications and the therapy sessions, it just gets bad again after everything is good.”
“Mike,”
“And sometimes, I don’t sleep and I won’t take my sleep meds so I don’t have to face that shit again, don’t have to see El sacrifice herself or you—I thought you were dead, Will. I thought it was real.” Mike covered Will’s hands with his larger ones. “I thought you were gone forever and I never got to tell you how I feel.”
“Mike, I’m here. I didn’t die. I’m right here with you.”
“Yeah, that’s the problem though. I haven’t actually been tortured or attacked or possessed or anything. I was just there. A witness.” Mike laughed hoarsely. “I stood by and watched so many people die. I was supposed to be a leader, keep the party together, and I split us up being so selfish and I just—I have no right to be having these damn nightmares when you and El have been through so much worse. And I know your mom told me not to discount my experiences but I can’t stop thinking about how pathetic I am to be like this when—,”
Will put a hand over Mike’s mouth and fixed him with a steady glare. “Listen to my words, Michael,” he started sternly, pulling his hand away to continue cupping Mike’s face. “We are all a little fucked in the head thanks to the Upside Down. And yeah, El and I are probably the two most fucked by it all but that doesn’t mean your trauma and experiences are invalid. My mom is right; don’t sell yourself short. You have the right to feel what you do.”
Mike’s lips were pulled into a thin pale line but he nodded and Will continued. “I was on meds too, remember? My mom used to always call ahead and make sure I have them on me whenever we would have a sleepover. It’s okay to need professional medical help. You don’t have to face this alone. You don’t have to control it alone.” Will pressed a kiss to Mike’s lips. “And I know you can’t tell your therapist everything, I know you can’t tell them about the Upside Down or the demogorgon and Mind Flayer, but you can talk to me just as I can talk to my mom or Jonathan or El these days. You’re not alone, okay? I’m right here.”
“Will.”
“Hush, babe, I’m not finished.” Will swept a hand back into Mike’s hair. “You saved me you know. You saved me and El multiple times.” Mike wanted to shake his head but he didn’t want to interrupt Will so he merely pressed his lips fimer together. Will of course noticed that. “I’m serious, Mike; you really saved us. You gave us something to fight for, a future to live for, with you and all our loved ones. You gave us hope and strength. You trusted me when I was the most untrustworthy person in the room. You were strong for all of us when we needed it, Lucas and Dustin, too. You are our leader, our DM, and you carried us through all that shit. Give yourself credit.”
Will pressed his lips to Mike’s temple and climbed to his feet. “C’mon, let’s get some sleep okay? Good days come and go like bad days and that’s nothing to be ashamed for. It’s never gonna stop but you can have control. You’re healing, Mike, and that means sometimes the wound is still gonna flare up. But eventually, it’ll scar over. Until then, take it one day at a time.”
Mike nodded and took Will’s hand, letting the smaller boy drag him back to the bed. Will wrapped Mike up in his arms and hugged him tightly. “I love you, understand? I love you no matter what. I’m always here for you on good and bad days.”
“I love you, I love you, I love you,” Mike gasped into Will’s arms, burying his face in Will’s borrowed t-shirt. “I’m so lucky to have you.”
“And I’m so lucky to have you, too, Mike.” Will dragged his finger down the bridge of Mike’s nose. “Now, let’s sleep so Dustin won’t be on our asses about taking so long to get him.”
At that, Mike laughed into Will’s chest and allowed himself to relax into his boyfriend’s arms. When he woke, he looked up into loving green eyes and felt for the first time in a while that yeah, he wasn’t alone and things really could get better. Still, when Will pressed him into the mattress with a mixture of kisses and tickles, Mike knew that this couldn’t last. Will didn’t live here anymore. He wouldn’t always be there to console Mike about the terrors of the Upside Down that still haunted him.
Mike needed to fess up and tell him mom the truth.
Shadows of the Yiga | Chapter 28
“What do you mean you can’t find him?” Zelda hissed. The Champions stood before her, looking equal parts guilty and worried. After searching for Link most of the morning, they opted to return to the city, hoping he had gone to talk to Zelda. Zelda’s reaction, however, proved how wrong they were. Hyrule’s Hero was officially missing in action.
Daruk cursed under his breath. “Son of a bitch,” he hissed.
“You were supposed to be keeping an eye on him,” Revali sneered at him.
“Shut your beak,” Daruk barked at him.
Mipha’s phone rang and she pulled it out of her pocket. Aryll's name flashed on the screen and she answered it quickly. “Hey, what's up?”
“Mipha,” Aryll sobbed softly. “He's gone, Mipha. He left!”
Mipha's heart stopped. “What do you mean he left?”
Her voice shook as she spoke. “He left. He just left. Just a note. Gone.” She sobbed into the phone.
Mipha's eyes darted quickly around the room. “Okay,” she said softly. “Okay. Just stay there. We're coming.” She ended the call and stared at the floor for a moment.
“Mipha?” Urbosa asked carefully. “What happened?”
“He planned this,” she said softly.
“He went to the Yiga Clan,” Paya said. “I’m sure of it.”
The others nodded, sharing in her conclusion.
“We need to go,” Daruk said. “Now.”
“Listen to me,” Zelda hissed. “We can’t talk about this here. I don’t know if we can trust Impa, or even my father for that matter. Just bring him back alive.”
“It will take a day’s drive to get to the desert,” Mipha said. “And at least another day to walk through the desert, assuming we don’t get lost in the process.”
“That’s too long,” Revali said. He turned to Paya. “Can’t you poof us there?”
Paya hesitated. “I can,” she started.
“But?”
“But, I can really only get you to the desert. Too close to their hideout, and they will be able to sense you all.” She shook her head. “And I can’t do it here in the city, either. Not without my grandmother knowing. I can meet you back at the ranch, but it probably won’t be until tomorrow.”
“We’d get there in the same damn time if we just drove,” Daruk said.
“We’ll be better off with Paya’s help,” Urbosa said.
Zelda nodded. “She can guide you through the desert. But right now, we’re under close watch from Impa.” She turned to Paya. “Meet them at the ranch tomorrow. Bring Link back.”
“I don’t like this,” Kit said, crossing his arms. “The longer we wait -”
“I know,” Zelda hissed at him. “But we don’t have a choice right now. My father has his men out hunting him right now. We can’t give him an clues that we know where he is. Understand?”
It wasn’t ideal, but the Champions agreed. At the very least, they would have time to prepare themselves, as they were sure infiltrating the Yiga Clan to find Link would not come without its battles.
*****
It was near noon when Link finally reached the edge of the desert. He drove as far as he was able, stopping at the closest point he could get to the given coordinates. He continued on foot, taking the most direct route possible. The desert heat proved to be just as unbearable as before when he, Mipha, and Aryll made their escape. But he was determined to get as far as possible before the night brought on its chill.
To his relief, he was able to get through the desert before nightfall, now that he had a better sense of where he was going. The sun was just beginning its descent when he made his way over the mountain range and into the familiar valley where the Yiga Clan hideout lay.
He kept to the shadows as he walked along the cliffs, examining the area below. From the height he was it, it was nearly impossible to see just how to get in to their base. Not only that, but he didn’t have a very good layout of the base, either, except from what he could barely recall from their earlier escape. He didn’t have a clue as to where to plant the C4, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to scope the base so freely, searching for the perfect spot.
He thought, then, that his best bet would be to at least plant C4 near the entrance to the base. Worst case, he could block their way out, and with a little luck, threaten the integrity of the structure and cause a cave in. Of course, he would likely die in the process, but that was of little concern to him. He simply wanted to do as much damage as possible while he still had the chance.
Link set forth, beginning his descent down the cliff. The approaching night, however, left him straining to see as the dark settled upon the land. He was already hot, tired, and dehydrated, which didn’t help in the situation he put himself in. So it shouldn’t have surprised him when he stupidly tripped over a clustering of rocks and tumbled down the rest of the slope of the cliff. He groaned when he finally stopped rolling and struggled to push himself upright. He cursed himself for being so stupid, but he knew he couldn’t stop to rest. Time was not on his side, and he was too close to them now.
He got back to his feet and looked around. He couldn’t see much in the dark, but the light of the moon was enough to show him that he was off his original course. In fact, he had rolled down much further than he originally thought, and upon further inspection, he realized then that he would have to climb out of the hole he had apparently gotten himself into.
He quickly realized, however, that the hole was not merely an empty space in the ground. Instead, he seemed to be somewhere within the Yiga Clan base. He immediately recognized the banners that hung on the wall bearing the Yiga Clan emblem. The room he was in was open to the night sky, though covered by an overhang which offered the perfect covering for anyone who may have stumbled upon the valley. No one would have looked twice, as it seemed to move seamlessly with the rest of the landscape of the valley. But by some dumb luck, his stumble brought him right into the space between the overhang and the ground, sending him into the round room below.
Even better, he seemed to have gotten in unnoticed.
He wasn’t about to take advantage of his luck. He quickly set to work, scanning the room and working diligently to place the C4 he carried with him around the room. With enough there, he could easily cause a cave in and block one way out.
When he felt satisfied with his work, he decided to press on and explore the rest of the base. However, there didn’t seem to be any notable way in. He pressed himself against the wall in hope of keeping out of sight, should a Yiga soldier wander by, and he quickly inspected the room further. He noted the bottom corner of one of the banners fluttering lightly. With no breeze, that could have only meant that there was a space somewhere. He quickly moved to the banner, keeping himself pressed against the wall as he examined it. He lifted it carefully, but there seemed to be only the wall behind it. He pressed it carefully with his hand and noticed it give slightly. He slipped under the banner, pressed both hands against the wall, and pushed his weight against it, and the wall gave. It turned slightly and opened, and he quickly slipped inside.
To his relief, the next room appeared to be empty as well. It was smaller and seemed to be a sort of storage room. Various crates lined the walls, and a few weapons were laid out on some of the wooden tables. He eagerly selected one of the blades, then continued forward to the door on the other side of the room. Again, he pressed himself against the wall and peered around the corner.
The next room was not empty. In fact, it seemed to be a barracks of sorts, where many of the Yiga soldiers were gathered. Some were sleeping soundly, while others chatted amongst themselves. A radio came to life at that moment, and they fell silent as they listened to the staticed voice.
“... activity at the southern cliffs.”
The Yiga soldiers quickly sprang to their feet, grabbing their weapons and moving to wake their comrades. They hurried out of the barracks, leaving the room empty.
Link hesitated, waiting, listening. There was no way he could be so lucky. Clearly they were alerted to his stumbling down the cliff, but he didn’t think they would all up and leave the base just on that. He was sure that they were simply hurrying to their posts to keep guard around the base should he get in. Moving forward through the base would prove to be even more difficult with the entire Yiga Clan alerted to his presence.
A hand suddenly gripped his wrist hard while another moved over his mouth simultaneously. His arm was yanked backwards behind him, and for a moment, he thought his elbow would snap under the force. He shouted at himself internally for not noticing the damn Yiga that snuck up behind up. He struggled for a moment, but he was pushed forcefully into the wall, and a boot kicked at the back of his legs. His knees weakened slightly, almost buckling out from under him.
“Don’t make a damn sound,” an all too familiar voice hissed in his ear. Just as soon as his father spoke, his grip loosened on his son, and Link spun around to meet his father’s gaze.
“What the fuck,” Link muttered.
Rusl’s gaze narrowed on him. “The fuck did I just say?” He hissed.
Link continued to stare dumbly at his father, his mind racing.
“Idiot,” Rusl spat. He started to pace before his son. “I fucking knew you would be here. I fucking called it. And here you fucking are. This is fucking suicide, you know that, right?”
Link watched his father pacing, his mouth hanging open. It had to have been another hallucination. It was the only explanation.
“Snap out of it,” Rusl growled. He pushed Link back against the wall. “I would rather not have to drag your ass out of here, got it?”
Link nodded stupidly, still at a loss for words. No, that wasn’t completely true. He had many words he wanted to say to his supposedly dead father. Too many words. He didn’t know what he wanted to say first.
Rusl gripped Link’s shirt and pulled him forward. “Let’s go,” he hissed. “Get your head in the game or we’ll both be dead.”
Link opened his mouth to speak, but only uttered intangible nonsense.
“I’ll answer everything later, alright?” he said in a frustrated tone.
Link swallowed. His gaze hardened on his father, and he raised his gun.
Rusl’s eyes narrowed on his son. “What are you doing?” he hissed.
“You’re working with them.”
His gaze softened for a moment. “Don’t be an idiot,” he said. “Why would you think that?”
Link hesitated, the doubt flashing across his face in a moment of weakness, but he quickly regained himself. “I saw you,” he said through gritted teeth. “This is all you’re doing. You tried to have me killed!”
Rusl stared blankly at his son, then his gaze narrowed once more. “You really are an idiot. Put the fucking gun down; you’re not gonna kill me.”
Link’s expression softened as he studied his father. His arm relaxed, and he lowered the gun slightly. He didn’t know what to believe anymore. There was a chance that his encounter with him was just a hallucination. But was that a chance he was willing to take? Could he trust his father after all the years of lying?
He lowered his weapon completely, though his expression still showed that he was torn between his decisions.
“I don’t know what you think you’re doing here,” Rusl continued. He pulled his gaze away and looked around them. “But it’s suicide.”
“I know.”
Rusl glanced at his son angrily. “We don’t have time to waste,” he said, stepping forward. “Let’s move.”
Link followed his father as they ran as quietly as they could, keeping close to the wall and peering around corners as they navigated the Yiga base.
“Where are we going?” Link hissed.
Rusl pressed his back against the wall as he heard voices. “We’re getting out of here.”
Link readied his weapon. “No way,” he whispered. “I’m not done here.”
“Well I am,” Rusl snapped. “I’m not letting you do something stupid.”
Link opened his mouth to argue further, but his father suddenly threw himself against him and they both fell to the floor as a blade rushed passed, striking the wall behind them where it stuck. Rusl was pulling him up suddenly and they broke into a sprint to dash across the round room where Link first stumbled in. But as they neared their exit, Yiga foot soldiers flashed before their eyes, blocking their path. They quickly circled around them.
Link and Rusl stood back to back, their eyes darting around them as the Yiga soldiers closed in. Link could feel the familiar sensation of the darkness creeping up on him, clouding the edges of his mind. But instead of fighting it, he willed it to take over. If there was any chance of getting out alive, it would be to risk the change and give himself the power he needed. But before he lost himself completely, he used the last of his consciousness to push his father down onto the ground, praying silently that whatever happened after that, his father would be smart enough to stay out of his way. And then he was gone.
Link’s eyes flashed red. His gaze shot up to the Yiga soldiers around him. They were no longer closing in, hesitant as the change took over. They stepped back cautiously, and Link sprang into action. He thrust his palm to the ground, causing the world to tremble beneath their feet. The ground exploded suddenly, the force of the attack sending the Yiga flying backwards. Many of them, however, were quick to return to their feet, and they lunged at Link with everything they had. The first few Yiga came at him simultaneously with their weapons. Though he was quicker and stronger in his darkened state, he couldn’t possibly avoid their quick and sudden onslaught. He reached for the closest Yiga as they dropped on him, ripping the blade out of his hand and throwing him into the ground with a great force. He spun on his heels as a few of the other blades sliced across his body, but he brought his own blade with him, slicing upwards at his attackers. The Yiga that took the brunt of his attack dropped to the ground, then quickly sprang backwards as his blade came down once more on the other Yiga that had lunged at him.
When the first round of Yiga soldiers had cleared out of the way, the rest were quick to step in, relying not on their weapons, but instead resorting to their own powers. They rushed at him with incredible speed, and Link could only manage to avoid the first two before their hidden blades struck him as they rushed around him. Link thrust his palm to the ground once more, but the Yiga were quick to dodge his attack, lunging backwards and throwing their palms out toward him.
Their unified assault came in the form of tiny, shadow-like daggers that rushed toward Link suddenly. Unable to avoid the attack, the daggers tore through him, bringing him to his knees. But as he stumbled forward, he thrust his arm to the side, and the shadowed daggers came to a sudden stop as if hitting a wall. They dropped to the ground and instantly disappeared. Link pulled himself to his feet, but the darkness was starting to weaken. He thrust his palm out in one last attempt to pull all his power through him, and the Yiga soldiers were sent flying backward against the far wall. With his other arm, he mimicked their shadowed attack, and they dropped to the ground. Those that survived disappeared quickly, leaving Link and Rusl alone for the moment.
The darkness subsided suddenly and Link dropped to the ground. Without the energy from the dark power pulsing through him in his enhanced state, the wounds he had suffered became more severe, and he gasped from the sudden pain that washed through him.
Rusl dropped to his son’s side, pulling him upright. He caught him as Link drifted briefly into unconsciousness, and he groaned as he came to once more. Rusl pushed Link’s hair out of his face and searched his eyes, but they had turned back to their familiar blue. His eyes closed and his body fell limp in Rusl’s arms.
“No! Come on, kid,” he muttered as he held his son. “Stay with me.” His gaze hardened as Link returned to a conscious state and Rusl dragged him up onto his feet.
“I don’t even want to fucking know right now,” Rusl muttered, allowing Link to balance himself on him. For the moment, it seemed he would stay conscious. Hopefully long enough for them to escape. “Can you move?”
Link nodded weakly and pushed himself away from his father. He stumbled slightly, but otherwise moved forward, and Rusl quickly followed. They quickly made their way out of the Yiga hideout and into the valley of the desert, but their escape was cut short once more as several more Yiga soldiers appeared to surround them.
Rusl pushed Link behind him. His fierce gaze moved around the Yiga soldiers as they began to close in. There was nothing either of them could do to defend themselves, now. Their fate was at its end.
Dorian stood in the shadows of the high walls and mountains that surrounded the Yiga Clan hideout. His brows knit together angrily as he watched the Yiga soldiers surround Rusl and Link. He cursed them under his breath. “Fucking Hylians,” he muttered to himself. “You both will be the death of me.” He raised an arm, his palm out in their direction, and in a snap, they were gone.
Rainling monthiversary 8/10
Who: Somer & Jeff ( @xjefferxx )
Where: a trampoline park, a cliff overlooking the city
When: 10 August 2019
Notes/Triggers: nsfw
Had it really been a month since he and Jeff had started dating? Somer could hardly believe it -- it seemed both like forever, and like no time at all. He checked himself in the mirror again, trying to make sure there was nothing in his teeth, that no parts of his hair were sticking out stupidly, anything like that. Jeff had said dress comfortably, so he had on his favourite Zelda tshirt and loose shorts, and he ran his hand through his hair again.
If he stared at himself any longer, he was going to be late meeting with Jeff. Somer squared his shoulders, nodded sharply, and walked out the door. Making his way to the student parking lots, he looked around for his tall, handsome, blond boyfriend, and waved his hands over his head. "Jeff!"
Jeff was excited. They were going out, going on a date and just going to have some pure fun. He  had wanted to do this date before, but now it just seemed fitting to do it for their one month. Dressed in his shorts and a button up, Jeff waved at Somer.
He leaned against his car, smirking. His hair was falling just right into his eyes and over his sunglasses. Somer hadn't seen his car yet so this was going to be fun. "I'd like you to meet Esmeralda. She is my baby, I rebuilt her."
After a month, most of the time Somer wasn't stunned by how hot his boyfriend was. Most of the time. But the way Jeff looked today, and the car he was leaning oh-so-casually against, stopped the redhead dead in his tracks. "Shit," he breathed. He stepped forward, fingers reaching out to brush against that glossy black surface. "Is this ... this is ... what model year is this? It's amazing!" Only then did it actually connect that the blond said he'd rebuilt the car, and the images Somer had made his mouth dry.
"'67, my dad finds them all rusted up and then we start at 13, working on them and building them, they become ours at 16 when we have our license. I may come from money but my father believed in keeping us grounded," Jeff said, opening the passenger door for him. "Shall we?"
"If you don't stop getting more sexy," Somer said, only half joking and sliding into the passenger seat, "I'm going to need -- I don't know but I'm not going to be able to handle it." His eyes were wide, and he touched the dashboard with gentle fingers, then the gearshift. Trying for composure, he asked, "So where are we going? And has it /really/ been a month? When are you even counting from?"
Jeff slid into the driver side. "Does that mean you don't want to be there when I change the oil or anything?" He smirked as he put it into gear and took off. "Yes, it's been a month. I'm counting from the party ... you know ... the pool one," he replied. "And you'll see, be patient but I promise it will be fun." He took Somer's hand.
"It means it's going to take me some time to get used to it!" Somer laughed back. "You're already the hottest guy I know, tall and sexy and elegant and, and graceful. Now I'm picturing you shirtless with a smear of grease on your face, and just wow." He lifted Jeff's hand to his mouth and kissed each knuckle.
Jeff grinned softly to him. "Yeah, something like that." He parked at what looked like a warehouse. "You ready?" Getting out of the car, Jeff took his hand once more as they walked in. Inside there was a floor that dropped down and was all trampolines. "I thought we could have some good old fun and hops."
The redhead gasped with joy, hands to his mouth. "Jeff! Oh, Jeff, blondie ~!" He threw himself at his boyfriend in a hard bear hug. "Oh my god. I've always wanted to come to one of these places but I just never -- and you -- and --!" Kissing Jeff hard, Somer smiled so much he thought his face might split.
Jeff kissed him back, so happy to see that Somer was happy about this idea. It was only the beginning though. "Glad you like it, now let's go get our non slip socks so we can jump," he said, keeping his hand in Somer's as they joined the line.
There were a couple glances that might have been vaguely disapproving, but Somer didn't even notice. He held to Jeff's hand tightly, swinging their joined fingers and occasionally headbutting his boyfriend's shoulder. Every chance he had to see what was actually going on on the floor, he was craning his neck and peering, eyes going round with some of the things he saw people pulling off. "Can you do that?" he would ask, headbutting Jeff.  "Or that?"
Jeff looked around as well when Somer asked him about things he could do. He only chuckled some. "Yeah, I can and I'll show you. Now shoes off." Handing him his socks, "let's go put these on and it's jumping time." Jeff found them a bench to use and quickly traded one pair of socks for another. "Ready?" Stepping closer to the trampoline floor.
Hastily Somer ripped his tevas off and pulled on the socks, wiggling his toes in the fabric to get used to it. He looked around, checking where everyone else was, and hurled himself onto the springy floor with a whoop. It bounced him back up, flailing, and he giggled.
Jeff jumped on as well, laughing as he went up in the air. It was something else, the tramps were made for gymnastics to make it give more of a jump. "It's like being back in gymnastics, I haven't been on one of these in some time." Though there were people there, it wasn't packed, so Jeff kindly asked for people to step back and winked to Somer. "You wanted to see this." He took three running small jumps then did three back hand springs before doing a twisting backflip in the air and landing on his feet. "Tada."
Somer hardly noticed the way he bobbed up and down with the motion of the tramps, watching Jeff with wide eyes. He applauded his boyfriend's tumbling pass, then gave a couple experimental bounces himself. "I wonder if I could do something like that?" He'd done tumbling kind of dives before, playing at swimming pools. With a harder bounce, he tumbled forward into a roll, coming back up onto his feet with a happy yell.
Jeff watched and smiled big to see Somer trying and doing his best. "Yay!" he cheered, bouncing over to him and pulling him in close. "What do you say we bounce together?" he asked, as he already was doing that with him softly.
It took a second, his heart still pounding with the excitement of turning a flip, for Somer to synchronise his bounce to Jeff's. He looked up, eyes still alight with laughter, and said, "So you just want to hold me and bobble here?"
Jeff shook his head. "Well no, but I did want to bounce with you, so hold on." Holding his hands, he crouched down with Somer and one big push threw them into the air, "let go," he announced, letting them fly away from each other with a laugh.
Somer hadn't quite expected that, and flailed in midair, laughing and landing on his butt. He managed to gain his feet on the second bounce, hurling himself at Jeff. They collided with a soft thunk.
Jeff laughed, jumping and letting out an omph when they hit each other but still finding it all fun and games right now. "What do you want me to show you next?" he asked, still bouncing and talking to his boyfriend as he did.
The redhead bounced more slowly, glancing around. He pointed, at a pit surrounded by tramps and full of soft blocks. "There. I want to play in that." Bending his knees, he pushed off and bounced his way across the tramps to the pit.
Jeff followed behind him. "Oh this is used to do like flips into and know you won't get hurt. Let's see your best flip." Bouncing in one place but out of the way of Somer, he got his phone out, ready to take photos.
"You mean the one where I don't land on my face?" Somer laughed. He did a couple experimental bounces, feeling the way this tramp reacted to his weight. Brushing his hair out of his face, he dove forward in a low roll, and forgot to bring his knees up, leaving him in a gangly flop in the midst of the blocks. He lay there giggling and breathless.
Jeff laughed. "Yes, but I mean, if you're talented, you still will." He recorded now as Somer tested then tried it out. Of course his boyfriend went flying in all the wrong ways and Jeff had recorded it. It was funny and perfect for the memories he wanted to hold onto.
Tipping his head back, Somer saw the phone in Jeff's hand and yelped. "You recorded that?!" He tried to scramble out of the blocks and failed, ending up swimming more than anything else, and fired one at Jeff. "Noooooo!" he protested, laughing. He managed to get onto the ledge and grabbed for the phone, bouncing and wobbling and laughing himself breathless again.
Jeff laughed as the block came at him and was quick at getting the phone out of Somer's reach. "Nope, not for boyfriend eyes just mine," he laughed, though he pulled him close and kissed him now. Kissing him slowly and in a teasing manner to distract him.
Somer started to try to climb up Jeff to get to the phone, even though there was no way he was going to be able to reach it. Except then Jeff was kissing him, and the redhead quickly forgot what he was doing, melting in his boyfriend's arms.
Jeff grinned, glad to have him melt and glad that he was doing it in the middle of a place like this. "What do you say we get to part 2 of our date?" he asked him, fingers lacing with Somer's.
The redhead made one more abortive grab for the phone, trying to use the bounce of the tramps to help him get high enough. "I want to get the flip right, though. One more try?"
Jeff smiled. "Alright, one more try and this time I won't record, I promise." Though he was fully tempted to do just that.
"Liar," Somer whispered, eyes sparkling. He kissed Jeff's cheek, perilously close to the corner of his mouth. Then he tossed his head, turning a serious face on the block pit. He was going to do a good flip. "Up, and then out," he muttered to himself, then licked his lips and tumbled into the pit again.
Jeff grinned, putting his phone away and smirking when Somer kissed his cheek like he did. He watched, cheering him on softly as he didn't want to distract him.
Climbing out again with a big grin, Somer whipped his shirt off and did the back double biceps pose. He laughed over his shoulder at Jeff, waiting for, he was sure, his boyfriend to fumble his phone back out.
Jeff grinned; now that was a photo. He pulled his phone out and took the photo, seeing and knowing his boyfriend wanted him to. "That is so getting posted to everything. Yep it's happening."
Instantly the pose dropped, and Somer yelped. He was still laughing, not actually that bothered by the photo, but he wasn't really sure about posting it anywhere. Once again he tried to get the phone from his taller boyfriend, laughing and grabbing.
Jeff held it up, knowing how to distract him. He kissed him once more; this time, though, he was a bit meaner. His phone put away, he stole Somer's shirt and took off hopping with it with a laugh. "Come get it baby," he teased.
"Jeffrey Sterling!" Somer exclaimed, laughing, torn between which of three things he should pursue: his boyfriend's mouth, his shirt, or the phone. He gave a mighty bounce, sent himself flailing into the air, and missed Jeff completely, tumbling in an awkward roll across the tramps. He might have banged something, he wasn't sure, but he was too high on laughter to even notice. "Give that back!"
Jeff was out of the pit of tramps and could really move now. He laughed as he swung his boyfriend's shirt around. "You want it, you have to pay the toll and come get it." Winking and teasing his boyfriend.
The redhead scrambled out of the bounce pits, running after Jeff, but he couldn't run very fast for laughing. "Toll?" he gasped, fingers flailing to grasp a bit of fabric. "What toll? I ain't payin' no toll!"
Jeff pulled him in tight, slipping the shirt back on him. "This toll." He kissed him softly then, cupping his cheek the whole time. "Come on, shoes and time for part two," he whispered. "Also, I love you."
The second Jeff's lips met his, Somer fell still and silent, and clung to his boyfriend. When the blond finally let him go, his green eyes were starry. "Love you," he whispered back, reluctant to let go. Finally he unlocked his arms and sat down to peel off the socks and put his shoes back on.
Jeff changed out his socks for his original socks and shoes. Once they were back on, his hand in Somer's they went back to the car. He held his hand as he shifted and sped them out of town but not far, finding a dirt road that took them up to a look out over the light city below.
Somer was surprised to realise how much time had passed while they were in the trampoline park. He couldn't hold Jeff's hand while they were driving, which in his mind was a mark against a manual drive. He watched the road slid by as they sped out of the city, and climbed from the car with his gaze fixed on the lights of the city spread out. "Wow," he said softly.
Jeff grinned, making sure the car was in park and grabbing the picnic basket from the trunk as he set it all up, including a propane lantern for light. "Come eat baby." Some of Somer's favorite food were in the basket, thus explaining why Jeff asked about them.
Ignoring the basket for the moment, Somer knelt up in front of Jeff, taking his boyfriend's hands. He leaned forward to kiss him softly. "Thank you," he murmured, eyelashes low. He settled himself on the grass, nestled close to the blond, and started to unpack the basket.
Jeff kissed him back, wrapping his arm around his waist. "You're welcome. I want to make tonight fun and just about relaxing as well." Kissing his cheek as he unpacked it, Jeff grabbed a soda to crack open.
"All alone out here, I feel very relaxed," Somer teased. He wasn't quite hungry yet, and just spread the food out, peeking at various containers to see what was in them. "So this is what you meant when you were asking about my favourite foods."
Jeff nodded some, kissing his jaw. "Yeah, I wanted to make this perfect for you, all about your favorites and all that. Also I know I already got you some gifts but I have one more." Jeff pulled a box from his back pocket.
"Do I get to spoil you like this at some point?" Somer asked, his smile turned up a little more at one corner. He started to kiss Jeff, but paused, eyes fixed on the box. "Uh, blondie, you know my birthday is two weeks from now. Why are you giving presents?"
"Sure, for my birthday and yes, I know, also it's only one week, it's next weekend because it's the 10th, silly." Jeff smiled. "You're getting spoiled twice this month," he said, handing the box to him. Inside was a old-fashioned feather quill and ink well. "For your writing."
"Shit, is it really that close?" Then Somer actually looked at what was in the box and blinked. "Oh ... " He swallowed, and shyly asked, "... will you teach me how to use this?"
Jeff nodded. "Yeah, it is and I think I can try. I don't really know but I know it's very cool to use and well, I thought you'd like it ... "
The fact that Jeff had given him a thoughtful gift, that nevertheless neither of them knew how to use, struck Somer as funny. With a chuckle, he closed up the box, fingertips lingering on the top. "Would it be okay if it sat on my desk? I don't want to mess it up until I know how to use it." Then a thought occurred to him, and colour leaped into his cheeks. "I mean, how to write with it."
Jeff cuddled him close, kissing his cheek. "I'm glad you like it and yeah, it can sit on your desk." He was just glad that Somer at least liked it some. Jeff had been worried he wouldn't enjoy the gift. "You feeling hungry or do you just want to watch the stars a bit more?"
"Is it okay that I'm not really that hungry right now? At least, not for food." Somer snuggled in closer to Jeff, looking up into his eyes. "I like looking at the stars right here."
"No it's okay, just wanted to have it." Looking up to the stars as well as they sat there. "I love coming up here, it's nice and quiet, it's a bit like the beach house ... "
The redhead bit his lips in an amused smile. Then he turned Jeff's face until he was looking into hazel eyes. "There, now I can see the stars," Somer said softly. "Much better." He felt that spark inside him, low, that Jeff seemed to always cause, and kissed him. "Thank you," he said against his boyfriend's lips. "For this. For putting up with me for so long. For everything."
Jeff blushed. "Dork," he whispered against his lips. "No need to thank me, I want to be here. I want to hold you and I do love you ... this is just the start to so much more." His hand cupping Somer's cheek. "Thank you for being with me."
"Your dork," Somer murmured back. He loved that blush. Jeff could seem so worldly and knowledgeable, and Somer still had the power to make him turn that delicate pink. He kissed Jeff again, more sensually this time, with intent. "Since we've been together a month, is there anything else you want to do to ... celebrate?" the redhead asked coyly.
Jeff smiled. "Yes, my dork. My gingerbread that stole my soul and my heart," he whispered against his lips. "Hmm, well yeah, I can think of a couple of things ... love to get my lips on your skin some and hand in your pants ... yours in mine too," he whispered, kissing his neck now.
The corners of his green eyes crinkled with his smile. "Got no use for your soul, blondie." He shivered at Jeff's words, letting out a soft, wanting sigh. "You can do anything you want ... "
Jeff grinned, laying Somer back on the blanket as he sucked on his neck more. "Saving most of the fun for your birthday ... wanna try some new things with you," he whispered there, palming Somer through his jeans a bit.
Somer's hips bucked up involuntarily into Jeff's touch. "Don't want to wait," he mumbled, poking his lower lip out. It was hard to pretend to be sad or annoyed with Jeff sending sparks all through him, though, and Somer's expression softened into desire very quickly. "Gonna have a permanent hickie there ... "
"I promise, when we go there it will be worth it but taking our time," he whispered, tuggin his earlobe as he palmed him a bit more. "Unfasten your pants and push them and your boxers to your knees for me ... "
Softly Somer cried out, arching into his boyfriend helplessly for a moment. "You ... " he panted. "You have no idea what that spot does to me." He reached up, wrapping his hands around Jeff's biceps, then rolled the blond away just a bit. It took him a moment to let go, not wanting to be away from touch for even a second. But he thought ... he hoped he knew what his love had in mind, and with trembling hands he shoved his clothes down.
Jeff smiled, watching him push his clothes down. Jeff did the same to himself. He stroked his own cock a bit, then leaned up to kiss Somer. "Hmm I wanna know what that does to you." Still touching himself as he tugged on Somer's ear. "Touch yourself baby."
The redhead could almost literally feel his cock get hotter, harder, when Jeff nibbled his ear again. "Makes -- makes me want you so bad," Somer gasped. "Your hands ... your mouth ... everything. So bad." He couldn't find a way to split his attention between his own hand and what Jeff was doing to him.
Jeff grinned, taking them both into hand at first, Then he just focused on Somer. His thumb teasing the head as he worked his way down Somer's body with kisses. Coming between his legs, he smirked and licked up his cock. Sucking the head, Jeff looked up to Somer with lust-blown eyes.
"Oh, Jeff," Somer whimpered. A slight breeze blew over them, and he shivered, skin coming out gooseflesh all over. "Jeff, oh ~ oh." When the blond finally took him into his mouth, Somer's head fell back with a soft thump, and he moaned, heedless of the volume of it. "Baby. Blondie. Oh, god. Fuck ~ that feels so good. Sogood."
Jeff grinned, hand on Somer's thigh as the other massaged his balls. Jeff sucked up and down his length some, slipping out to the tip to run his tongue over it then relaxing his throat to deep throat him once more. He hummed a song as he winked up to Somer, loving the noises he made.
There was input from his other senses, Somer knew that. Had to be. But it wasn't making it through his sense of touch, ramped up to the highest level. "Oh god," he moaned helplessly. And things -- sex -- got better than /this/? How? He barely realised he was lifting his hips into the heat and fit of Jeff's mouth, one hand resting on the blond hair.
Jeff was glad to feel Somer get more into it. He focused on just bringing him to his edge and over. Focused on his climax and knew his own would come as well from just seeing his boyfriend so wrecked. Sucking down hard, he gave him all the attention he needed, still looking up to see Somer's reaction.
He could feel his climax coming, like a great cresting wave, and there was the vague idea that he should do something now. Something to do with Jeff, but he couldn't get the idea to resolve. Somer's hand clenched in the fine silky strands of Jeff's hair, and a ragged cry burst from him. He thrust deeper into that welcoming warmth, heedless, and came hard.
Jeff swallowed around his cock. He took it all, smiling as he pulled off with a pop. Moving back up him, Jeff kissed his cheek and wiped his hand on the blanket as he had come just from seeing Somer cum like that.
Somer lay panting, feeling boneless and good. He rolled his head in Jeff's direction, one hand limply lifting to brush against his boyfriend's skin. "Kiss?" he murmured.
Jeff chuckled. "Sure but you're going to taste yourself." Pressing a kiss to his lips softly. "You are gorgeous," he whispered against his lips.
The redhead did his best to kiss back. There was a different taste to Jeff's mouth, not bad, but different. "'d return the favour but I can't move," he breathed with a soft chuckle. "Wh-what did you just do to me?"
Jeff smiled, helping him to put his pants and boxers back on along with his own. "It's a blowjob, baby."
Somer laughed quietly again. "No 'm pretty sure you just sucked my brain out through my dick," he said. He still felt very limp -- or maybe languid was a better word? maybe this feeling was what that word was for -- and pulled Jeff down to lie beside him. "Love you."
Laying back down by him, Jeff smiled and caressed his cheek. "I love you too," he whispered, pressing soft kisses to his lips over and over again. Just getting lost in the peace and quiet of them being up there together and spent. "Hmm we should get back soon, baby."
"Noooooo," Somer said dramatically. He rolled over on top of Jeff, then went completely limp. "I can't move. We can't leave. We're trapped here. Doooooooom."
jeff chuckled, letting Somer lay over him for the moment then he sat up and picked Somer up. Setting his boyfriend in the car, he cleaned up the picnic, knowing they could eat later. Now in the driver's seat, he kissed Somer's cheek. "Still doomed?"
Somer turned his head quickly, in an attempt to catch Jeff's mouth. "You cheat," he said, smiling. "Always picking me up when I'm trying to weigh you down. One day, one day I'm going to just make you carry every single bit of my weight and see how you do then."
Jeff chuckled. "Even if you were dead weight, I'd still pick you up and carry you." He kissed his hand and driving them back to school. Jeff held his hand in one hand the basket in the other. "So do you want me to stay over tonight or should I kiss you at the doorstep, leave you with your food and say have a good night?" Swinging their hands some.
A little shyly, Somer confessed, "I don't sleep so well when you aren't there." He clung to Jeff's hand tightly, unwilling to let him go. "So I always want you to stay over -- but I understand if you want to go home and sleep in your own bed."
Jeff shook his head. "I sleep better with you too." he whispered, kissing him softly again. "Come on, up to your room and into cuddles. Maybe we can watch Princess Bride again for fun?"
Somer snorted. "It was fun the first time, too, dork." He reached up and ruffled Jeff's hair, pulling the blond strands over his boyfriend's face, then laughed and ran up the steps to his dorm.
Jeff blew the hair out of his face. He laughed as well, chasing after Somer as he ran too. Catching the boy, he picked him up from behind. "Gotcha!"
"One day," Somer said, laughing, "one day I'll race you in the pool, and then it won't be so easy for you to catch me. Let me down, I can't reach the lock."
Jeff set him down, kissing his cheek. "I can't wait for that day. I love seeing you in the pool, watching you swim."
Slyly, pushing his door open, Somer said, "You mean you like seeing me with hardly any clothes on."
Jeff smirked. "I like both." Scooping him up again, and carrying him to the bed as he kicked the door shut.
40. “I’m here for my daily fix of hugs and kisses.” for lip/luz?? 41. “I don’t wanna get up– you’re comfy.” for andyeddie?? please??
Hey, friend! Thanks for the prompts! The andyeddie one is on its way (don’t worry I adore those two) but I’ll post it separately.
High school au. Summary?? Let’s go with: Zelda, cowboys, and peaches.
send me a prompt!
It’s Carwood’s birthday, and he doesn’t want to do anything big. He hadn’t asked for any gifts, so it isn’t his fault his mom bought him the new Zelda. It isn’t his fault, but he’ll still play it. He sits in one of the beanbag chairs in his room and opens a new file; hearing the Zelda theme still gives him those weird nostalgia chills and he loves it.He hears a knock at their front door, followed by the tell-tale creak of its hinges and his mother’s voice. “George!”“Hi, Mrs. Lipton, is Carwood home?”“He’s in his room, go right on up.”George’s footsteps are loud, just like the rest of him, and he comes into Carwood’s room without knocking, plopping down into the other beanbag chair. He’s wearing a baseball tee with a cap to match, which he’s twisted backward. It makes the hair around his ears stick out and damn, Carwood would be lying if he said it wasn’t adorable.“Whatcha doing, Woody?” George smiles wide.“Yeah, maybe don’t call me that,” Carwood says, “look what my mom got me.” George looks to the screen and gapes, he slowly turns to Carwood with that stupid face, “Zelda! The ultimate Nintendo masterpiece!” Carwood laughs a little, “If that’s what you wanna call it, yeah.”“Well, this is perfect,” George says, pulling off his hat, “because I’m here for my daily fix of hugs and kisses,” He leans forward and lightly kisses Carwood’s cheek.“George–” Carwood blushes and checks the hall for his mother.George scooches off his beanbag and makes his way to the space between Carwood’s legs, lays back into Carwood’s chest, and pulls his arms over him, “So, I am gonna sit here and get those,” he kisses underneath Carwood’s chin, even if Carwood tries to get away, “and you can save Hyrule.”“George,” Carwood whines again. He checks the hallway and then sighs; getting up, he clicks it closed and gives George an apologetic look. “It’s alright, babe,” George says as Carwood settles behind him again, “It’s okay that I call you that, right?” he checks, twisting to catch Carwood’s eye.“Yeah, Georgie, it’s fine.” Carwood presses a kiss into George’s hair.George has been Carwood’s best friend since the fourth grade, he’s slept over at the house countless times, his parents think of him as their own kid, honesty. But then George kissed him last summer and Carwood kissed him back and now… well, at this point Carwood is head-over-heels in love with this boy, like, quarterback-and-the-cheerleader, Hero-and-Claudio in love. And even if he is so happy to be with George, and even though he knows his parents would be happy for them, he isn’t up to telling them yet. He just wants to take things slow.He’s grateful that George seems happy with the pace he’s set.Tonight, he’s happy to have George cuddle into his chest and to drop kisses onto his head. While he plays George keeps piping up.“Monster at your 5, Woody!”“Woody, get him with the fire-arrow!”“There’s a tower up there, Woody.”Carwood pauses the game and rests the controller on George’s stomach. “Alright,” he says, “what’s up with this ‘Woody’ shit?”“Please,” George scoffs, “I’ve called you Woody since we were 9, Woody.”“Yeah, and you know I don’t like it.” “I’m just trying to get you in the mood.”Carwood laughs, “What mood?”George sits up and turns around, snapping his hat back on and giving Carwood a wild smile, “I got you something.”“You did?”“It’s your birthday,” George’s expression suddenly becomes flat, like he’d expected more from Carwood, “and you’re my boyfriend. Yeah, I got you something.”Before Carwood can ask what it is, George pounces over the empty beanbag chair and snatches up a large gift bag that Carwood hadn’t seen before. It’s stuffed with tissue paper that flies up and scatters when George drops in his lap, sitting back to face him.Carwood searches through it and finds a box; he pulls it out and gives George a look.“Keep going.” he says and he looks so excited, Carwood has to fight the urge to lean over and kiss him.So Carwood opens the box and finds…Brown cowboy boots.“George,” Carwood sighs, “what the fuck?”“Look on the bottoms.” Alright, alright, Carwood trusts him. He turns them over to see the soles.On one is printed, ANDY.On the other is written (undoubtedly in George’s handwriting), There’s a snake in my boot!Carwood looks over his shoulder at his Woody Doll that still sits on his alarm clock and a smile breaks over his face from ear to ear. When he turns back to his boyfriend, George is nearly bouncing waiting for Carwood’s reaction.Carwood’s smile and the blush on his cheeks speak for themselves and George tumbles forward, kissing Carwood sweetly. Carwood lifts the hat off his head and puts it on his own, backwards, of course. Leaning back, Carwood asks, “Peaches?” and tastes his own lips with a crinkle in his brow.George shrugs, “I stole my sister’s lip balm.”“It’s sweet.” Carwood says and pulls George into his lap to keep kissing him.They forget all about Zelda.
Game #3- “Doki Doki Literature Club!”
Tumblr media
It’s almost impossible to discuss Team Salvato‘s “Doki Doki Literature Club!” without ‘giving the game away’. ‘Just play it’ is the best advice you can get if you have yet to experience it. This proposition is made easier by the fact that the game is free, and just four hours long. “Doki Doki Literature Club!” is a very worthwhile experience for anyone with an interest in subversive narrative, but the warning that appears on the introductory splash screen is not there for dramatic effect; “Doki Doki Literature Club!” does feature content and themes that some may find disturbing.  This is hard to believe upon booting up the game for the first time. Clean, lossless sound and bright visuals disarm the player immediately, and soon it’s easy to forget all about any content warnings. Long school halls and cushy classrooms are rendered with striking background art, and the characters are brought to life with some very expressive and appealing character art. The game performs well on bad hardware, even during scene transitions.
The soundtrack is a very mixed bag. It’s crisp and lossless, but seems like an afterthought, or a part of the project that wasn’t assigned much of a budget. The main theme is the best track, and wouldn’t sound out of place in a “The Legend of Zelda” game. “Okay, Everyone!” has a very short and repetitive guitar riff which becomes difficult to stomach after the first hour, and “Ohayo Sayori!” suffers from the same issue to a slightly lesser extent. “Dreams of Love and Literature” is heavily electronic while “Play With Me” rescues the remainder of the soundtrack with its tumbling piano and flute arrangement. The latter half of the soundtrack smooths out nicely with some lulling piano and the sharp steel strings of an acoustic guitar with “Daijoubu”, “My Feelings”, and “My Confession” before the sensory assault that is “Sayo-nara”.
The gameplay is disappointingly dismal. It’s very dull to simply hit the Enter key for four hours. There is very little interactivity present, and one of the only forms on offer, the poem generating mechanic, is shallow and the player doesn’t even get to see the end result. Other titles in the genre like “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney” and “Hotel Dusk: Room 215” do a much better job of engaging the player, but it’s important to note that “Doki Doki Literature Club!” is a free title, made by two people over the course of two years, and not a release from a major AAA studio. There are some niggling issues while saving and making selections in the UI, likely because of how it was coded in the python driven, visual novel engine Ren’Py.
The four main characters you interact with over the course of the game are surprisingly endearing, even for players with no interest in this sub-genre. This endearment is subtly weaponized to lull the player into a sense of false security, a predicament, ultimately, of the player’s own making. The first ending “Doki Doki Literature Club!” throws at the player is very abrupt, the result of one of the few choices you have to make, which is practically yanked out of the player’s hands despite the telegraphed foreshadowing. In actuality, the experience hasn’t even properly begun, and the game does require at least two playthroughs.
Subversive storytelling has thrived in the indie development scene because there is more opportunity to hide plot point and keep them hidden during development. “Undertale”, “Five Nights at Freddy’s”, and “Bendy and the Ink Machine” would likely not exist but for the indie scene, and “Doki Doki Literature Club!” is yet another title in this growing sub-genre. Time will tell if Team Salvato can make lightning strike twice with their next project.
Zelda Breath of the Wild Review
Tumblr media
Many could not believe the impressive showing at E3 2016. Zelda Breath of the Wild promised a huge open world, go at your own pace gameplay/story and challenging combat that required you to fail over and over before you would achieve success or master your craft. Everything and more has been delivered by Nintendo and it is accompanied by the launch of a console that suits Zelda’s gameplay and length perfectly. In Breath of the Wild we dive back into Hyrule after a traumatic world altering event 100 years ago. Adventure and mystery surround Link and the game delivers sets up a deeply enchanting and thrilling world to explore.
Tumblr media
Zelda Breath of the Wild is a gigantic game. After roughly 70-75 hours of gameplay, it is safe to say I could play this game for another 30-40 hours without getting tired of it and finding something new to see or do. What Breath of the Wild does so consistently, is encourage exploration and rewards people who think carefully about how to go about traversing the world. The biggest change other than the open world for Breath of the Wild is the fact that Link can climb absolutely anything. So many video games use the line ‘you can go anywhere you can see.’ Often this is simply not true. Other than The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, this is just a buzz saying to promote the size of games. Often size is promoted rather than focus on the quality of what consists in the open world. Ghost Recon Wildlands is this year’s perfect example of an open world that is absolutely gigantic but is completely lacking in interesting experiences. Breath of the Wild nails having things to do and the consistency of new and exciting gameplay moments around every turn. This is the new standard for open world games. Everywhere you look there is something new to see and the way the world is designed it actively encourages you to seek out the next adventure. The climbing mechanics makes this a reality. As long as you have the stamina, which is arguably the most important new gameplay mechanic other than the climbing, you can climb and make your way to new areas. Mountains, cliff faces, buildings, boulders, ravines, ditches you name it, if you can see it, you can climb on it. There is always a way to climb from somewhere to get a better view of your surroundings and to potentially discover something new. Run out of stamina though and you will very quickly tumble to your death. Breath of the Wild likes to kill you. It will kill you often.
Tumblr media
Nintendo have clearly been watching the competition very closely for the last few years. Breath of the Wild takes a lot from other games, but it handles the mechanics and gameplay attributes with the Nintendo love and care we see so consistently from their first party games. A big mechanic featured is that of Ubisoft like towers. They are scattered across the map and split the regions, allowing you to have a visual goal as to where to go to next. 1 for every region. Once you climb these towers, Link activates an ancient mechanism that scans the area and reveals the map. In other games, this would highlight points of interest, unlock new quests and encourage you to head to specific locations for the next interesting element of gameplay. Breath of the Wild is similar, but handled in a way that makes you feel empowered and like a true navigator. You are the explorer in an unknown, yet strikingly familiar world. After you unlock a region, you are free from atop the tower to look around, using Link’s Sheikah Slate as a pair of binoculars to mark your own points of interest on the map. This encourages you to seek out the exact locations you think look interesting or simply gives you the lay of the land around where you have been searching. The map in Breath of the Wild is completely blank other than a few specific locations like towns, towers and any shrines (more on them later) that you have previously discovered. The map tool gives you a number of icons and marking points that you, yourself are able to mark and leave. Find a treasure chest but can’t get to it at this moment, leave a marker. Find a challenging enemy that has great loot but are simply not strong enough to defeat it, leave a marker. See a shrine from a distance and want to come back to it later, leave a marker. The map is filled out by you and the more you adventure, the more full of things to do the map will be. The sense of hand holding is instantly removed and the sense of discovery and adventure is so fresh and rewarding.
Tumblr media
The hand holding is removed in most facets of the gameplay. The combat in Breath of the Wild is very challenging. From the get go, you only have 3 heart containers and very minimal stamina. As I mentioned earlier, this game likes to kill you very quickly. At the beginning of the game you will be faced with small groups of enemies that vary in attack patterns and approaches. The AI is very intelligent and it becomes more evident the longer you play the game. Enemies in the early stages of the game and well through the first 10-15 hours of the game are very deadly. They can often kill you in 1 hit and must be treated with respect. Bokoblins, Lizalfos, Moblins, Keese, Guardians and the occasional boss enemies all have their own unique way to attack and this will keep you thinking and ensure you use every option in combat to succeed. Breath of the Wild feels a lot like Dark Souls. People scoff when others use that example to compare a game, but as I mentioned it is abundantly clear that Nintendo have been watching other developers and noting what is working. Melee combat is the main course of Zelda’s combat with a side dish of bow and arrow/bomb slinging. Link is a versatile and skilled warrior, after all he is Princess Zelda’s royal protector. He has a number of dashing moves that ensure his survival and that he brings down enemies with ease. Unfortunately if he is hit, he is dead. You need to use your dodging mechanics, parrying with shields and general precision movement in order to make sure you are positioned perfectly in order to avoid being hit at all. Good movement, pinpoint dodging and timing your attacks after an enemy has attacked you, or while they are bumbling around trying to lock onto you. Sound familiar? Combat is a very rewarding experience, however it is not visible that you are getting better or Link is improving. This is the one thing I think Nintendo have squandered with Breath of the Wild. Even though the combat is fun and after every single fight you feel more powerful and stronger, you really don’t notice it straight away. The only upgrades come through finding equipment after exploring or completing shrines (trust me more on them later). A progression system of some form would have made combat situations feel more meaningful, especially with level of challenge they present in the early stages of the game. Prepare to Die. Prepare to die trying and then understanding that sometimes running away is the best option, especially with how often your weapons will break.
Tumblr media
Combat is highly impacted by the weapon system. Something I didn’t enjoy in the early stages, but grew to love was the weapons and how they break so easily. Seriously who is making all the weapons in Hyrule? In the early stages of the game, every weapon you find is expendable. Fighting against a group of 4-5 enemies, it is not unusual to go through 1-2 weapons. However you are consistently picking up their weapons and using them against them. It is particularly entertaining when you knock an enemy to the ground causing them to drop their weapon. After scooping it up for your use, they look at you with utter fury and frustration, charging to end your life. Weapons that are on the verge of breaking can be hurled at an opponent for double attack damage and this can be an absolute life saver at times, or a great way to start an assault on an enemy camp. This causes the player to really evaluate a situation. If you are running low on weapons and equipment, then a enemy camp may be extremely challenging, causing you to take a more stealthy approach, or avoid it all together, leaving a mark on the map to return to when you are more kitted up. The way enemies attack you is also impressive. The enemy AI is certainly a highlight of Breath of the Wild and can make every fight play out in different ways. Enemies will flank you, they will use the environment to their advantage, they will scramble if they are knocked down by an explosive, they will use fallen enemy weapons and they will overwhelm you if they have a chance. It is imperative that you approach every situation with a plan, other wise you will not succeed. As you get further into the game, the level of challenge falls dramatically. Despite the weapon breaking system there are always new weapons to pick up and hunt down with the many hidden chests and enemies that you encounter. Heavy weapons, spears, fast swords and clubs are all available to be mastered by the warrior Link. They are all unique and feel fun to use and give you the edge depending on the enemy type you are facing. In addition to melee combat one of the more impressive ways to take out a group of enemies is by Robin Hooding them all to death. Bullet time with a bow is definitely one of the best additions to combat and Link can activate slow motion when he leaps from the back of a horse, from a high vantage point or from a draft caused by a fire. This is definitely the way to start a fight.
Tumblr media
Combat can also be enhanced by the game’s cooking system. This is one of the most rewarding and deep gameplay systems within Breath of the Wild. It can make or break certain situations and give you the edge against a particularly challenging group of enemies. Every enemy when downed drops monster parts and other loot. Everywhere in the wilderness of Hyrule is foot and animals to be scavenged. Like Far Cry, you can hunt and kill animals for their resources. Deer, pigs, wolves, birds, bugs, horses, bears, fish, lizards, frogs, snails, squirrels, sheep, you name it. There are a lot of animals to hunt and cook up. In addition, there are a number of fruits and veggies and even sugar cane and rice that can be added to meals to give extra boosts of health and stamina. Mixing and matching ingredients to create meals is a lot of fun. Boosts to defence, attack, stamina, number of hearts and stealth, movement speed and more can be enhanced by cooking the right dish and reading the reading the descriptions of the items. Monster parts and bugs can also be cooked up into various elixirs that can win you a fight or help survive some of Hyrule’s harshest environments. Not only do the animals and enemies want to kill you in Breath of the Wild, but the cold and hot air  of the terrain will end your life quickly too, not to mention a brutal thunderstorm that will strike you and your enemies down if you have anything metal.
Tumblr media
While combat, exploration and cooking are what you will spend a lot of your time doing in Breath of the Wild the other main element of the gameplay is puzzle solving. I have mentioned shrines earlier in the review and the shrines are one of the most impressive, dynamic and rewarding puzzle solving experiences I have ever had while playing a video game. Early in the game you are given 5 key powers that will help you navigate the world and also solve the 120 shrines hidden carefully throughout the world. Statsic (freezing enemies and objects), Magnesis (lifting and moving metal objects), two types bombs and Cryosis (freezing water blocks). These powers are all acquired in the first hour of the game, meaning every puzzle you come across in the world or within a shrine can be solved right there and then. There are no come back later, or I am not ready yet experiences in Breath of the Wild. While the powers are self explanatory the shrines can be solved in some pretty remarkable ways and the experimentation and combination of powers mean there are normally a number of ways to solve puzzles. Shrines range from combat trials, puzzles that require physics manipulation, puzzles using motion controls, quick reflexes and dodging, using your bow and finding hidden solutions to puzzles that are complex. These shrines all take around 2-10 minutes to complete and are very rewarding. Inside each shrine there are chests that require even further puzzle solving to claim their rewards and each give you further progress to unlocking more hearts or stamina. There are also numerous shrines in the world that require you to complete a side quest to unlock or navigate a particularly tricky area of the map. Some are hidden behind breakable walls or locked away deep within a winding labyrinth. The 4 dungeons in the game feel like the logical next step from shrines as they feel like 4-5 shrines locked together and also hold a challenging boss enemy controlled by Calamity Ganon.
Tumblr media
To combine all of the wonderful gameplay experiences is also the absolutely stunning art design. Breath of the Wild is a gorgeous video game. One of the most picturesque and beautiful they I have ever played in my life. The huge expanse of Hyrule looks stunning as the sun sets, or the wind blows through a shady forest, or the ripples of a lake or river sooth you after a tense fight. The draw distances of the game are impressive and this is so crucial as a major aspect of the game is being able to see that next point of interest from miles away. Every character design is well animated and this allows for such a complex and interesting combat system. The game not only looks glorious bus has a subtle, yet effective soundtrack that is most noticeable during boss encounters and quiet moments as you journey from place to play.
Tumblr media
All of these elements add up to one of the most deep, complex and free experiences that I have ever had. The fact that I can also play it on the go is remarkable. It is easy to pick up and play, controls very well and has hours and hours of content. Nintendo have produced one of the best games ever made with their latest entry of Zelda and I cannot wait to see more and explore more with the upcoming DLC.
Midnight for Charlie Bone Summaries/Analyses: Chapters 7-9
Spoilers under the cut.
Chapter 7: Hypnotised!
On Friday night Grandma Bone marks Charlie’s completed questions. They are all correct, but Grandma Bone accuses Charlie of cheating. She gives Charlie ten more questions to do, just because, but Charlie gets out of doing them the moment Grandma Bone falls asleep.
Charlie heads over to Benjamin’s where, to his surprise, he finds Mr Onimous and the Flames. The Flames try to open the case using a strange fiery magic, but are unsuccessful. They and Mr Onimous leave soon after, but not before Mr Onimous reveals how they moved the case into the cellar and wishes Charlie luck on his quest. Once he’s gone, Charlie has the idea of asking Fidelio for help with the case.
Early the next morning, Charlie and Ben go to Miss Ingledew’s to find the right key for the case, but are stopped by Manfred and Asa. When Charlie fights back Manfred hypnotises him. Charlie finds himself in a moving car:
“The world outside Manfred's coal-black eyes began to disappear, and Charlie found himself inside another world: inside a car to be precise. The car was traveling at great speed through a forest, and Charlie appeared to be driving. The coal-black eyes were beside him now, and the sinister voice repeated, "Look at me!"
There was a sudden, violent jolt and Charlie was being dragged from the car. He knelt on the rim of a great pit while the car -a blue one- tumbled over the edge. The silence of the forest was broken by the scream of birds and then, far, far below, came a low, echoing splash.”
This clearly shows how Lyell’s ‘accident’ happened. Interestingly enough, Charlie is seeing it from Lyell’s point-of-view. It always confused me as to how the Yewbeams and Bloors managed to drag Lyell out of the car, considering it was moving at a very high speed, until I remembered how Zelda was able to telekinetically move Fidelio during the ruin game. So, I think it’s possible that the Bloors/Yewbeams enlisted the help of a telekinetic or two to get Lyell out of the car before it crashed.
A while later, Charlie comes to. Benjamin tells him what happened and why they were going to Ingledew’s (since Charlie can’t remember). They return to Filbert Street. As they do Charlie begins talking about what he saw while hypnotised, and realises that what he saw was how his father died. Charlie decides to go back home because he feels ill, which worries Ben because he’s never known Charlie to be ill. (Hey, just like Maisie in chapter 1! I guess that’s where he gets it from.)
That night, Charlie tells Paton about what happened on the way to Ingledew’s, and also the truth about the case. Paton is concerned, especially for Miss Ingledew’s safety. He decides to return the keys for Charlie while Charlie’s at Bloor’s. He also insists on being there when Charlie opens the case, as an extra precaution because they don’t know what’ll come out of it.
Then Grandma Bone appears to tell Charlie to go to bed already. As Charlie goes he hears Grandma Bone shouting at Paton, asking him which side he’s on and complaining that she can’t trust him anymore.
 Chapter 8: Breaking the Rules
Fidelio and Benjamin arrive at Charlie’s house the next morning at the same time. Fidelio’s fine with Ben joining their musical session, and eager when Charlie and Ben ask for his help in hiding the case from the Yewbeams. He readily agrees and comes up with a good idea on how to move it without any spies noticing.
The night before Charlie goes to Bloor’s, Amy gives him Lyell’s old school tie to take with him. I love how Lyell’s tie becomes important in the very next chapter—I mean, ‘you never know when you might need it’ practically screams ‘chekhov’s gun’, but I just really, really love how it ended up being used to discover that Lyell’s not really dead.
On Monday it is Charlie’s first day at Bloor’s. Charlie and Amy go to Bloor’s Academy by taxi. As Amy and Charlie walk toward the school, Amy feels someone watching her from the Music Tower. (I know that it’s never mentioned which tower it is, but all the evidence points to that tower being the Music Tower.) Of course, we all know who’s watching her—Mr Pilgrim (aka Lyell). He’s trying to recognise her. This moment gets me every time, because it’s just so sad to think of Lyell trying but unable to recognise his own wife, and Amy getting spooked and leaving quickly without realising that Lyell was right there. Though I do wonder if she did see Lyell’s face but dismissed it as her mind playing tricks on her.
So, Amy leaves quickly, and Charlie is left by himself. Not for long though, since the other students start arriving on the Academy buses. Charlie is reunited with Fidelio, and they enter the building.
In the hall, we get to see Olivia Vertigo for the first time (:D), where she ‘breaks the rules’ and gets detention. Charlie and Fidelio kindly help her pick up her stuff before she gets whisked away by Asa.
And then there’s assembly. Fidelio points out all the teachers and shows Charlie where to sit, before going to sit with the orchestra. Charlie notices Mr Pilgrim for the first time.
(At this point, I can’t help thinking, ‘it’s your father, Charlie!’ It’s so obvious that it’s kind of funny, but at the same time it’s really tragic. Seeing Charlie and Lyell in the same room together but not recognising each other is kinda heartbreaking.)
After assembly, Charlie has his first lesson—music, with Mr Reginald Paltry. Mr Paltry turns out to be shockingly abusive toward his students, and is particularly mean to Charlie because Charlie’s endowed and Mr Paltry hates the endowed. Soon enough that’s over and done with, and it’s time to go outside and run laps.
Unfortunately, when Charlie returns to the blue cloakroom after that, he finds that someone’s stolen his brand-new cape and all that’s left to wear is a tattered one. Charlie refuses to wear it. Fidelio begs him to put it on, but Charlie doesn’t listen. (He really, really should have.) Anyway, the two boys go to English class, where Charlie is inevitably kicked out for not wearing ‘the essential garment’. Even worse, he’s noticed standing in the hallway by Asa Pike, who marches him straight to Manfred’s office. Olivia’s there too. :D The head boy gives Charlie detention, which means he has to stay in school for part of the weekend. Charlie of course protests about that, and mentions his mother. Manfred and Asa’s reply:
"Mom?" said Manfred scornfully.
"Mom?" repeated Asa. "We don't talk about moms in here."
"Moms don't exist in here!" Manfred added darkly.
  Chapter 9: The Red King’s Room
Charlie and Olivia leave Manfred’s office and seek refuge in the purple cloakroom. Charlie is despondent over his detention, but Olivia tells him that it’s not so bad. (And she’s right. The detention literally consists of them doing worksheets for a couple of hours, and then they can do whatever they want. Like explore. And in a place like Bloor’s Academy, exploring sounds pretty cool.)
Charlie tells Olivia about the cape-switch, and she suspects Gabriel Silk as the culprit and advises Charlie to wear Gabriel’s cape until he can get his own cape back. Charlie agrees, relieved. So when he returns to the blue cloakroom he puts on the tattered cape, and this is how Fidelio finds him sometime later. Fidelio is shocked that Manfred gave Charlie detention during his very first week, saying that ‘Manfred must really have it out for [him]’. Charlie tells Fidelio about Gabriel and the cape, and it’s agreed that Charlie will try and switch back the capes when Gabriel is asleep.
At lunch the boys get a good look at Gabriel Silk. Charlie is introduced to Miss Chrystal, Fidelio’s violin teacher and a very friendly person. Also doesn’t seem to be a very serious person overall. She certainly has some wonderfully-scented perfume. :) Too bad she’s really an evil witch (or will be soon).
During dinner Dr Bloor singles out Charlie in front of the entire school (I’d be so embarrassed if that was me) and tells him that endowed children study in the king’s room after dinner. While that’s happening, Charlie takes a good look at the headmaster and realises that he was the one who took Dr Tolly’s baby.
After dinner, Billy Raven guides Charlie to the king’s room, where he meets the other endowed children for the first time. There’s Lysander the African (good), Tancred (good), cheerful Dorcas (neutral), Zelda (bad), Bindi (neutral/semi-good), Beth (bad), and Emilia Moon (neutral). Emilia looks surprisingly quiet and dreamy, not even lifting her head to say hello. Charlie also sees the Red King’s portrait for the first time, and seems to feel a certain connection to it.
After homework time is over, it’s time to go to the boys’ dormitories. Charlie is sleeping in a bed next to Fidelio’s, and the bed on his other side happens to be Gabriel Silk’s. After light’s out, Charlie uses Fidelio’s flashlight to check if the cape Gabriel was wearing is his. Once that’s confirmed, Charlie takes it and attempts to swap it with the tattered one.
That’s when Gabriel suddenly wakes up. Sounding panicked, he begs Charlie not to switch the capes back. It turns out that he has an endowment that allows him to feel emotions in clothes. The tattered cape was given to him by the Academy after his brand-new cape was accidentally destroyed, but Gabriel can’t bear to wear it because he can feel that something horrible happened to the last person to wear it.
Sympathizing with Gabriel’s plight, Charlie eventually agrees to keep wearing the tattered cape. In exchange, however, he asks Gabriel to wear Lyell’s tie and tell him ‘anything about the person who wore it’. Gabriel does so, and says that the person who wore the tie was happy once, but now they’re lost, and that they don’t seem to know who they are. Charlie seems to completely ignore what Gabriel says after the ‘lost’ part and automatically assumes that it means that Lyell’s dead (even though Gabriel refers to Lyell in present-tense and not past-tense).
After that, Billy comes up to Gabriel with a blue scarf (which I am 100% sure was his father’s) and asks him to wear it. Gabriel does so: "Well, this person was always in a hurry. Here, there, everywhere. He just couldn't stop, and now, I'm afraid, he's dead." Billy asks if Gabriel could hear what the man was saying, but sadly it doesn’t work like that. And the messages become weaker if the person who wore the clothing is dead.
Finally Charlie realises what he should have realised straight away, and asks Gabriel why he said that Lyell was lost, because Lyell died when Charlie was two years old. Gabriel assures him that Lyell is lost and definitely not dead, before bidding Charlie goodnight and going to sleep himself.
