Some thoughts on Hazbin Hotel

I literally just watched HH this week, followed by binging Helluva Boss on YouTube right after. And my Dash is full of HH and HB stuff now. And the other day I saw someone posted their thoughts on the show, including one specific take that it falls right back under the typical "Sinners are bad but hey, we can fix them!" sort of trope. (I really don't know if I'll be able to find the post again, if I do, I'll reblog/link it here or something).

And hey, I'm not gonna argue that it doesn't, per se. I just think there's a bit more to it than that.

It's literally just me rambling because I haven't been able to stop thinking about this topic all fucking day, so I wrote it down to get it out of my head. Obviously if you read it and want to comment/continue the discussion, feel free. Just please. Be respectful.)

Now.

All my thoughts on HH are very much colored by my past experiences with religion, US christianity, specifically. More specifically still, the sort of christianity that makes people believe that "home schooling" their kids, isolating and indoctrinating them away from anyone who might make them question it all, is the best course of action. I grew up bouncing from church to church, from home schooling co-op to co-op, all so my bio-mom could find the exact group to echo her own sentiments back at her.

Among the things I grew up believing were great ideas such as:

Sexuality is inherently disgusting, and something you should always be forcing down/avoiding/punishing yourself about. Masturbation, porn, sex before marriage, dressing "immodestly", and any sexuality outside of heterosexual were inherently evil and worthy of punishment. Sometimes that punishment was being assaulted, because really, she should've covered up, right? Girls, sometimes girls as young as 12-13 (if not younger) were villainized for wearing tank-tops and shorts, because they were causing the boys to stumble and immodesty was a moral failing on their part.

Drugs, alcohol, substances in general, are bad and wrong and using them, or heaven forbid becoming addicted, is a moral failing on your part. You are a bad person for consuming a drug, and therefore deserve to fall into addiction, houselessness, starvation, and/or abuse.

Poor people deserve it. Accepting help of any kind is leeching off good, hard-working people. Your worth as a person is directly tied to your ability to be a "productive member of society."

Any mental health issues are your fault, and are either because you don't believe in jesus hard enough, or because you're inherently broken and sinful and therefore unsaveable. There is no room for sympathy or empathy for anyone struggling.

There's a reason these are the same stereotypical archetypes you see in this sort of show. The queer sex-addict. The gambler. The "weirdo" who isn't like other people and enjoys "weird" things, or enjoys things "too much". Even just the party-girl character. Because these aren't just stereotypes. These are actual entire groups of people who are ostracized and vilified just for being who they were born to be, for making choices christians don't like, or for being sick.

And that brings me to Angel Dust. Who, by the way, I wish I could've been given a content warning about, because holy shit Ep 4 and Addict hit me really fucking hard. My friend recommended the show to me without having watched it, so I went in not expecting that sort of storyline to punch me in the gut out of nowhere.

Anyway! Angel Dust! Literally named after a drug. A gay porn star who flirts shamelessly with anyone and everyone, who proudly shows off his best films to his friends, who secretly hates his job, not because of the sex, as we come to find out, but because he's under the thumb of a fucking psycho who treats him like shit and actively physically, sexually, and mentally/emotionally abuses him. He's basically been trafficked, and hates that he doesn't have any say in what happens to him in front of the camera. It's a horrifying position to be in, and one that left me a little shaken up, tbf.

The take I'm mostly writing this based on is that Hazbin Hotel falls into the trite tropes of "rich white girl attempts to fix people who are below her" and specifically mentioned disappointment in how Charlie didn't try to argue that Angel Dust didn't deserve hell based only on his addiction or sexual past, but that she instead claimed that she could "fix him."

And I just . . . think that's a little bit of a black/white take.

For the first part, what would people rather she do? Put all her time, effort, influence, and power into trying her damnedest to help her people, who are being slaughtered by the thousands every year just because Adam is bored? Or sit at home and use all that time, effort, influence, and power to make rubber duckies like her father? She could just ignore everything going on, call it hopeless, give up, and ignore the suffering of her people. Would that be better? Would that satisfy this weird little "she's just a rich white girl with privilege" gripe?

Charlie is a rich girl. A princess. Someone with huge amounts of privilege, power, influence, etc. But you know what? She's also stuck in hell. She was born there, through no fault or choice of her own, and because of who her parents are, she is trapped in literal hell, with no hope of ever, ever ascending to heaven. She does not get a chance at redemption, because she was born to the wrong people. She is a young woman who was born into horrifying circumstances, living in a world that she frequently expresses disgust for (her frequent discomfort with sexuality, her disgust toward the cannibals, her dislike of violence, even necessary self-defense).

And she still loves her people and wants to see the best in them.

She would be completely justified in hating everything about hell, her life, the people around her, her parents, heaven, everything, really. She has every right to hate her entire existence, but she puts all that hatred for the system into her efforts to fucking do something about it. Why is that a bad thing, just because she was born into a position of power and authority??

And now on to Angel Dust.

Charlie never once makes a judgement call about Angel or his habits, his work, or his personality. She expresses discomfort with the sexual nature of his work (tbh wouldn't be surprised if she's a sex-repulsed ace), but she does not think he's a bad person because of his work. Nor does she think that he needs to stop doing his work in order to become a better/good person. When she tries to get him some time off, she's explicitly doing it because she wants him to have time to decompress and participate in activities at the hotel, not because she wants him doing less of his specific kind of work.

She never condemns his partying, either. She has a bar in her hotel! She defends him partying, right to heaven's face, because she knows everyone present has partied, everyone has enjoyed a drink with friends. There is no condemnation of his partying activities, and I don't think she ever makes it seem as though Angel needs fixing.

What I got out of that episode, watching Charlie passionately defending her friend in front of the worst fucking person in the universe, was that people do not need to be fixed, but some love and support can help them make better choices for themselves. Angel still has a good time. He still has his job (contract, y'know, but would probably be in the industry regardless). The only thing different about that particular night of partying is that he's out with people who care about him, and who he cares about.

Even Cherri, though she expresses some joking disappointment that he's spending so much time worrying about Nifty, doesn't actually seem that put out by it. She teases him a little, but leaves him to do his thing. And his thing is making sure his friend, who is less experienced at partying (and who is significantly smaller/more vulnerable than most other people), is safe and okay. His thing is defending his friends from an extremely dangerous person, at massive risk to his own personal safety.

And he didn't do any of this because he'd been "fixed" or because he'd "changed." He did it because, for possibly the first time ever, he has people around him who love and care for him, and who want the best for him. And who he loves and wants the best for in return. He said himself that he stays out of his mind on substances, allows himself to be drugged and assaulted, puts on this persona of care-free-crack-whore-who-only-thinks-about-sex, because he is trying everything in his power to dull the pain he's in. Because he doesn't believe he deserves any better.

And this, this is what Charlie is trying to show Heaven. She is trying to show them that there is nothing morally damning about alcohol consumption, or even drug use, sex work, or anything that makes Angel who he is. She's trying to show them that, with some love, care, and support, with a safe place to call home, with their base physical and emotional needs being met, people don't need to resort to the sort of destructive behavior heaven/Adam is condemning! People can choose to engage in these behaviors safely, consciously, and with people around them who want them to be safe and have a good time.

Then we get on to the idea that this entire episode ends on. Heaven doesn't know how people get there. They don't know what it takes to be "good enough" for heaven. Sera herself admits that Adam was just "the first soul in heaven," all but admitting that he's just there because he defaulted into it. (Though that does make me wonder, what about Abel? He would have died long before Adam, and considering how long Adam lived, and that there were plenty of other people around by the time he would have died, where were all those souls going??).

And Adam is the fucking worst! He is literally the worst, most selfish, violent, vulgar soul in the entire show, but he is allowed in heaven, for reasons no one even understands.

You know what the difference is between Adam and Angel?

Adam can't be fixed.

His behaviors are all destructive, not to himself, but to others. He insults, abuses, hurts, and kills with abandon. He made this weird, shitty deal with Hell and Lucifer because he wanted to murder innocent souls, because he was bored, and the rest of heaven doesn't even know about it. He has free reign to be an absolute piece of shit to everyone around him, damaging people left and right, and he will never face any sort of justice for it, because hey, he's already in heaven!

But Angel? Angel's behavior is all self-destructive. Again. He gets fucked up to dull his immense pain. He allows himself to be drugged and assaulted because he believes he deserves it. Because he's been told, for who knows how many thousands of years, that he's a whore anyway, so why shouldn't he be free to use for anyone who wants to take him? He has been beaten down, physically, emotionally, sexually, until he's a shell of a person who is struggling to find any reason to continue his shitty existence.

And he hurts only himself.

I mean, okay, he does piss off Husk sometimes, crosses boundaries/etc. But he and Husk pretty clearly fix that between themselves. There's no lasting damage there, and idk if anyone else noticed, but he stops that behavior pretty much entirely after that ep.

Angel is hurting. He is hollow, and hopeless, and trapped. And he does not need to be fixed, nor does Charlie ever attempt to do so.

All she does is reach out a hand, and say, "Hey, I see that you're struggling. This place is fucked up, isn't it? Maybe I can help."

Charlie is a flawed person. She takes her privilege for granted. She feels the immense weight of her choices, and the pressure of having taken responsibility for a people who may never want her help. She messes up, because somehow, she's endlessly cheerful and optimistic, despite her upbringing and the world she grew up in.

Charlie is flawed. But she's trying her fucking best. She isn't trying to fix. She's trying to help.

We all need some help, every now and then, don't we?

Antitheists get off my blog, or at least refrain from commenting on my shit relating to religion. Just because I'm not a Christian doesn't mean I don't believe in a higher power. This goes for anti-Catholics as well. You're all tarts and I'm drawing my lines in the sand.

Additionally I was raised Catholic and despite taking some piss, I'm not reading a holy book for a funny factor or for its ridiculousness. I'm still showing it respect. I'm treating it like a holy book, as I would any other holy book that people ascribe their faiths to. I do this not because I was raised Christian but in spite of it. And I do this for all religious texts, regardless of what religion they are from or associated with.

"Reading the Holy Bible as literature" is not mutually exclusive with "treating a holy text that people believe in with respect."

Tbh idk if I reblogged either of these posts but hm, Biden's one is relatable to far broader audience - first thing is, liberal lack of accountability and spectacle of faux democracy from USA side did fuck up shitton of countries before and will fuck up more because that's imperialism. Second thing, Biden can be really a stand in for any other leader here, post is gonna be relatable to quite a lot of people not being from USA, spectacle is exactly the same in France, UK, Poland whatever else.

Additionally, while this post is very interesting and it's good to read it, it only describes race relations & history of whiteness in your continent. I'm poor ass eastern european - as many problems as we have, sense of identity and history isn't one of them. I'm religious minority, my ancestors perished in Holocaust. My national identity is not the same as my regional identity (they can be in fact in opposition at times), religion can further complicate stuff. Here, discussions about racism have different accents. All things published, everything appearing in "woke" activist & liberal discourse is related to black people specifically. And yes, Black minority can face horrible racism here. However it's very pointed that no one discusses three biggest racial/national minorities: Rroma people, Chechens & Vietnamese folks whose usual lives are far far worse, from straight up modern pogrom attempts (Rroma ppl) to just long history of administrative & societal discrimination that took lives. Meanwhile Black people here are usually expats, closer in economic class to neoliberal elites than rest of ppl described. So we talk endlessly about BLM, Martin Luther King etc all while there is no representation of Rroma/Vietnamese/Chechen voices anywhere despite state machine killing them to varying degrees.

And that's not tackling folks from my country emigrating to Western Europe for job and as many other migrants having their passports taken away, getting trafficked etc. all while to this day still being seen as less civilized.

This is a lot of words to say "the racism you experience is not personally relevant enough to me in order for me to participate in dismantling it" which is a really hot take to have when we're literally discussing the white supremacy which originated in Your continent.

Also, you aren't reblogging my posts to your town. This is the internet that you share with the entire globe. And you reblog to followers which are likely all over the globe. And they reblog to their followers and so on. A lot those people are white USAmericans.

Ugh ain't that the truth. I think it's because people on this side of discourse are more likely to be right leaning or right wing, and people on the right are more likely to be religious. Which means anti-atheist shit all the way. Personally I have no damn clue which side I fall into so I don't really describe myself as anything politically speaking. All I know is that the right wingers who shit on atheists are extremely annoying.

I see way too many posts being reblogged that are just pissy religious people talking about how people need faith, or how the elgeebeetees are taking away their rights by fighting against religious discrimination, or how the damn atheists are a bunch of heathens...it's really frustrating. If they aren't being downright anti-non believer they have some sort of prejudice and will shit talk atheists at every opportunity.

I will say though that some of the religious posts I see are entertaining. Like the ones that are preaching about the fear of god, or the ones that are all "how do people go on without religion, it's a mystery and every atheist is lonely and sad", things like that.

if i’m honest with you? this is definitely an over-simplification and perhaps even a misrepresentation of my actual opinion, deliberately done so that i could make a more concise post, because the point of that post was really much more to do with how the audience’s misogyny mean they over-vilify almalexia (even considering the way the narrative tries to vilify her) compared to the rest of the tribunal. in my defence, it’s over-simplified largely because that post is about misogyny and i do not want to get into an argument about what the tribunal did vs. what the tribunal didn’t do on a post where the central point is misogyny (not that it stopped people from being fuckwits and trying to debate about whether the tribunal were evil for the 5974th time and not understanding that my post about misogyny is not the appropriate forum for that). if i could rewrite it now (it’s actually two years old, dates from 2019, though someone reblogged it recently) i might change it.

to answer your initial question though (”how exactly did the tribunal misuse kagrenac’s tools and the heart of lorkhan?”), I do think, regardless of your intention, to use a precious religious object - even if it pertains to a god/a religion you do not personally follow - as a means of attaining power for yourself is always going to be a misuse of that object. it is always going to be extremely insulting and demeaning to the people who follow that religion and shows a profound lack of respect*. this is, of course, before we even touch on the debate about whether lorkahn is alive/dead, in what sense is lorkhan still alive, should one use the heart of a still living being to such ends? etc. it’s arguably unethical on several fronts. on reflection, i don’t think exactly it’s wrong to say they ‘misused’ the heart, though i might try and find a better verb to capture that the act of using the heart / tools was in some sense unethical. 

obviously, the nords are awful, the nord conquests were awful, and the question of whether they are worthy of respect is probably running through many people’s minds in 1E700. i think while their history might justify its use to some, i do think, personally speaking, using a religious object in such a fashion is just fundamentally unethical. what i will say is that i do feel strongly that we can recognise facets of things that are wrong, unethical, hurtful, damaging etc. while also recognising the benefits, the ways in which their actions helped, healed, and made things better, and that we’re capable of seeing things with that degree of complexity. (which is exactly the central point of that paragraph quoted.)

personally, i also think we can divide ‘how the tribunal attained godhood’ and ‘what the tribunal did with their godhood’. if i’m honest with you, my issues with the tribunal are much more to do with the latter: they failed to outlaw slavery, they failed to prevent imperial occupation, they failed to deal with dagoth ur, they preside over a hostile, xenophobic environment, and there was a great deal of religious oppression. some of these things can be attributed to dunmeri culture more broadly and come much more from the great houses (although, imo, when one takes the mantle of godhood and presides over a country as a ruler, in some fashion, one should expect to take some degree of the blame). some of these issues I think are better talked about from an out-of-universe perspective - for example, why do the TES writers thinks adding slavery makes for more interesting world-building? why do they consistently defend and valorise imperial colonisers, that we are forced to aid, while they make the anti-imperial dagoth ur advocate for ethnic cleansing? these writing decisions are not apolitical and speak to an imperialistic perspective when it comes to fantasy worldbuilding. but to go back to the point, i think to link these so directly to the use of the tools & the heart somewhat misses the point as i think these questions are to do with rulership - i.e. they would be failings of the tribunal were they merely kings/queens, though as gods I think it’s fair to have much higher expectations of what they can achieve - and less so with divinity and attaining divinity.

so to answer your questions:

no, of course not. what they did wrong was not inherent to the concept of attaining divinity. my issues are with how they did it, and then what they did/didn’t do once they had cemented their power.

not justified in their decision to use the heart and become gods, because people suffered? as explained above, i don’t think those two things are necessarily connected. i think using the heart presents a different type of moral quandary.

Here we are

Honestly, I never thought I’d get here.  I thought I’d come here, write some stuff that I thought would be fluffy and cute and the rest of the fandom might enjoy reading too, and maybe get a few hundred followers in return.  I didn’t expect that I can say there are 1000+ people who have read at least one of my posts and waits for more because they like what I put out.  I have trouble wrapping my head around it.

I’m gonna pause right here for a sec because I wanna take this time to wish you guys Happy Easter and Happy Passover for those who are celebrating as I am with my family.  My university sucks and doesn’t give the religious holidays off anymore because they don’t wanna be skewed towards any particular religion anymore even if the President is a Jew ffs so I haven’t been able to spend Passover with my family in LA for the past 3 years, but this year really hit harder because of the virus, and it’s the first year my parents decided to do the seder ourselves instead of with my larger family.  Although I’m upset about that, I appreciate my immediate family for coming together and making great memories because of it, and I really hope you guys also come to appreciate that as well, even if you’re not celebrating a holiday this week or anytime soon.  Sometimes we take for granted what’s right in front of us because we think it’ll conveniently be there forever, but be conscious of that for even a brief moment.

Anyway, I really can’t thank you all enough for following me.  It’s been a fun 3 months with this blog so far and I’ve made some great friends, written some great stuff, gotten amazing requests that i’m still writing sorry T.T and I can’t express how much I’ve appreciated you.  I read every notification, scroll through every reblog, smile at every like, and love every reply/comment.  I’m really happy that there are people out there who I can reach with my content and make your day a little better as we share our fandom.  My heart is so full 💖

I double-checked just to be sure, and it turns out she’s just a liar. She claims that she fought with me because I said “antisemitic” things and that now I am trying to play down my antisemitism.

So, I went back through the archive of all my blog posts and here’s what I found:

2.27.2018 I made a post with the line: “I think most major religions are harmful and raising a child in a religion is abuse.” It didn’t get many notes. I reblogged it from time to time, but nobody really noticed.

3.14.2018 I make a post about why it is harmful to raise your child in Christianity. Mostly it gets angry notes from people with “traditionalist” in their url.

3.20.2018ish After disagreeing with femoids about Leftist authoritarianism, the word goes out that I’m “bad.” Posts are read in bad faith and people claim I want to burn books and kill anyone who reads Marx.

3.20.2018 Egowave --at that point I don’t think we had ever interacted-- publishes an anon about how bad I am because I don’t like Tankies. That’s the first time I recall hearing of her.

3.21.2018 The post about Christianity is rediscovered by Leftists combing through my blog for “more bad takes” and now it turns out I am a “bigot” and a racist for saying Christianity isn’t great for children.

3.21.2018 I respond to another Leftist’s post -- again it makes clear that egowave was disagreeing with me about Tankies, and then -- unrelated to egowave-- I discuss the controversy going on at the time in Leftist Tumblr about my Christianity post.The Leftists attacking the post at that time were angry because it targeted Christianity.

3.22-23.2018 It gets popular in the femoids, peeteseeger, alyesque circlejerk to make fun of Wiccans and neo-pagans. I make a post reminding Leftists that no religion is more “real” than another. This post gets picked up by a blog called mallcommunism in Egowave’s circle.

3.23.2018 Egowave makes a post saying: “terminalpolitics bravely defending the wicca and neopagan community from slander while also saying its also child abuse to raise a child in a major religion this is so good. this is so tight.” The “major religion” in question was Christianity. We know this because of the context of the discourse at the time (the Christianity post was the one Leftists were angry about) and because she says “major religion” -- singular. If, as she later claimed, she was talking about my other post she would have said “major religions” as the post did because it did not single out any religious tradition. Egowave was just trying to get in on the dogpile again as she did when my crime was suggesting unity with tankies was bullshit.

Up until that point, I had not posted about Judaism.

3.23.2018 I respond to Egowave and reiterate my position that Wicca is “just as real” as any other religion and that we shouldn’t indoctrinate children into religion generally. I also reference the “shitty views” she expressed in her other posts mocking Wiccans and other religions she disliked at the time.

Egowave then asked me if she could celebrate Hanukkah with her children, thus bringing Judaism into the discussion for the first time. Again, up until that point the discussion had only dealt with Christianity.

I answered that you would need to wait for your children to decide to celebrate Hanukkah with you because the child must be able to choose their own religious belief.

And that was it. The conversation ran its course. I don’t think I’ve discussed Judaism since, though people do mail and message me trying to bait me into it.

Now, egowave and her friends produce memes about my “antisemitism” (you can find them if you look at the #terminalpolitics tag). She claims that she was motivated to disagree with me because of my attacks on Judaism, but Judaism had never come up until she brought it up and I answered with my general principle for all religions on the subject of raising children in a faith system (which people are welcome to disagree with).

Form the beginning, Egowave has just been trying to get in on the dogpiles started by more popular bloggers: Terminalpolitics is bad because he hates tankies, Wiccans and neo-pagans are bad, Terminalpolitics is attacking Christianity -- all popular complaints. So, her retcon that she was concerned about Judaism seems surprising when it had not come up -- and even after it came up I didn’t actually say anything bad about it beyond expressing my objection to raising children in any religion.

I realize nobody else cares and folks are unlikely to read this and that’s okay. I wrote it to get the timeline straight myself and to put it in the #egowave and #terminalpolitics tag for those interested.

This is how a smear works. You just make memes and repeat something enough and that’s all your readers will ever know. Now, people are welcome to go through my posts and look for my hatred of Judaism or posts in which I single out Judaism. You won’t find any because I never wrote them. You will find posts about Christianity and the problems associated with religion in general.

Now, egowave wants me to unblock her -- but why would I want to interact with someone who is completely full of shit?

Hi, not sure if you are aware of this, but the Timothy post - the one with Jesus vs Satan - is offensive because it is an inaccurate (and false!) representation of Jesus. I know that conservative 'Christians' in America are horrible people, but that post is very... if you want to diss Christianity at least do it right, like "Abraham and Sarah were half siblings" or something like that. This isn't personal, mainly just... annoying

Previous Jesus anon; my point is, canon Jesus is awesome, but conservative Jesus is horrible. Also, there’s the whole literal theme cycle of sin and redemption, and sin is the conscious choice to send your faithful servant away with their death message because you - whoops! - slept with their wife and now she’s pregnant but the servant was too loyal to sleep with his wife whilst everyone else was fighting - I’m looking at you, David. Alright, I’m going to attempt to make this reply as non-salty as I can, but I should prelude with the fact that I heavily dislike and criticise religion. In general. Not just Christianity - all religions. I don’t really talk about my views on religion much, because I know it can be a very sore point, so perhaps reblogging that post was poor judgement on my part, but  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

I’m afraid I’m not going to apologise for reblogging that post, because it’s obviously very tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken too seriously (and…doesn’t the Bible think humans are superior to animals? Doesn’t the Bible consider human souls above animal souls, or something?) (Quick edit because I didn’t make this clear, I am aware that that whole post is pretty inaccurate to what the Bible actually says, but again...tongue in cheek!) But I am sorry you didn’t like it - if you want me to tag those sorts of things so you can blacklist it, I’m sure I can do that. Not that I plan on making those sorts of posts a habit. “Satan wants equality” or whatever someone had said just made me snort.

But, look, I get where you’re coming from. I do understand that Christianity gets a lot of flack, and if you’re a well-meaning person just trying to do your thing, it must be disheartening. So I do sympathise with you in that respect. There are bad parts of all social groups - sadly, they’re usually the ones who get the most attention. It is what it is. Christianity is not at all unique in that respect.

I’m going to rid you of the misconception that I think what I do because of religious nuts in America. I’m not American, so to be perfectly honest, while I am aware of and despise the sorts of people you are referring to, they were a creed I discovered after the founding of my original point of contention with religion when I was about six years old, came home from school one day, and apparently announced to my mother, who’d never expressed any opinion on religion at all, that I thought religion was stupid. I’ve been through phases and thought about it critically since then, obviously, but…you get my point.

Jesus is probably one of the things about Christianity I dislike the least, because I do think Christianity expresses some good messages, and he gets the majority of them, but I just disagree with most of it, as a general concept. I haven’t decided I don’t like Christianity because of a few Evangelical Christians, or because of the “misrepresentation”, as you call it, of Christianity in the media. (Which…I could make a whole other post discussing that point).

A religion can’t exist outside of its following. You can’t say that a section of Christians that large are just “idolators”, because in America, they have rather a lot of power, and however much they may be warping the Bible for their own political agendas, what they’re quoting is, nevertheless, there. The Bible does condemn all sorts of ridiculous things. That said, I have the utmost respect for people like yourself that have clearly decided to update and modernise and adapt, while still believing in your god and your religion.

But, America aside, I have obviously met many perfectly nice Christians in my life. Some have been genuinely lovely people. I still don’t believe in what they believe. I still disagree with the way that in my experience Christians, particularly, have habit of trying to convert you. I recently worked with a group of Christian women in a kids’ after school club, and the level of indoctrination made me very uncomfortable. There was no balance. They weren’t Arsehole Christians, by any means - all were perfectly accepting of same-sex marriage, of divorce, of interracial marriage, they were all very nice and friendly and did good things in the community - but they did very loudly want everyone to believe what they did. And despite my repeated insistence that while I respected their right to practise their own religion I was an atheist, they made countless attempts to convince me to go to Church with them, even after many very polite refusals and explanations. 

The day I listen to the Pope is the day I’ve been possessed by an alien, I’m afraid. I understand what you’re trying to say, but again, please don’t think I dislike your religion because I’ve heard too many “The Westbro Baptist Church Shits On Gay People” stories. It’s far more nuanced than that. I am very aware of what Christianity is really about, and I am very aware that there are perfectly lovely Christians in the world. I can like Christians - some of them, as with any section of society!

no, I’m 29. and OP of that post, who definitely fucking sounds like he’s twelve, because I could have written the above post about how religion sucks when I was in my dawkins phase and I was THIRTEEN and like two years later I already learned to be a little less dramatic, is twenty-seven. out of someone who’s almost thirty, I’d expect some maturity.

Using Tragedy For Political Gain For the Nth Time.

I am torn as to whether or not I should have written a personal take on this so soon. When I woke up in Friday morning to see the news about the Christchurch terrorist attack I was alarmed. Yes, I saw the footage and yes, I read his manifesto - it was nothing short of absolutely grotesque and degenerate. Plain and simple. Make no mistake, this was an racist attack whose perpetrator is indeed a terrorist. In fact, I won’t even dignify him by referring to his name - he will simply be called henceforth the NZ terrorist. On Tumblr I shared a few articles and reblogged a few posts calling for moderation. But as I see the events further develop I can’t help but address this situation which I believe will make things worse unless if we talk about them anyway.

We don’t often get the luxury of having a mass murderer explain himself such as the Las Vegas shooter (whose motivations are still a mystery to this day and will never be explained). And while the NZ wrote an extensive manifesto and made it clear what his positions are. I’ve struggled (and I still do) on whether or not saying his manifesto should be read by people so that people can draw their own conclusions, but I’ve questioned how much he is a point he would have when the doc is filled with so much misdirection, shitposting and trolling. I’ve questioned if he really is world-traveled as he claims he is since his manifesto drips with the words of someone who never left his parents’ home and decided to go on a shooting because of death... Until I saw there is evidence he visited at least Pakistan, with video and passport to confirm it.

As far as we know, his manifesto was made to misdirect with only one thing for certain that we can assess: he wants to further cause division between the left and right and escalate the culture war. Unfortunately, many individuals have either mindlessly fallen into his trap and started heaping the blame on the wrong kind of individuals for allegedly “radicalizing” this criminal or even more insidiously, forming some sort of unholy ideological alliance with the terrorist because he knows his crimes will play into a certain course of action that he hopes they will take and they are grateful that someone did actually did it so he could use the tragedy as an convenient excuse.

A good example that comes to mind is the dictator of Turkey, Reccep Tayip Erdogan, (who is name dropped in the manifesto and who the terrorist calls for his death) blamed the attack on the “rise of Islamophobia” and went on to say the Hagia Sophia will never be a church again so long as there are Turkish people. Very typical behavior from him and to say so no surprise, but this time he is surely alarmed because the terrorist dared to paint a target on him. He is in pure hostility mode because that is how he operates. He is overly emotional, engages in divide and conquer tactics like the terrorist and makes no bones about how much he hates not just his political rivals, but also his allies too. He earns to revive the Ottoman caliphate so that he can take over the West and the Arab world. He is an absolute PR nightmare for anyone who wants to show an example of a liberal Muslim government, which Turkey used to be held up as the example the MENA countries should follow, but now is hardly any better. The only time I remembered he tried to present himself as a paragon compared - which is hard to do when you are jailing journalists and critics - except during the Jamal Khashoggi affair. For one, trying to pretend like you are a better human rights example than Saudi Arabia really isn’t that hard to achieve since they are just Islamic North Korea. For another, people have rightfully pointed out that he is full of shit and he was merely using that for personal agenda.

But Erdogan is a dictator so of course he wants his critics silenced and his opinions don’t earn any serious merit in the discussion. What really is concerning is the kind of discourse we will see in the Western world. Journalists have either consciously or not laid the blame at the feet of Donald Trump, Candace Owens, Pewdiepie, Christians, Jews, memelords, guns and others for supposedly radicalizing this individual. It’s ironic he said denounces Trump and conservatism in his manifesto, but since the public will be discouraged from reading it out of fear of radicalizing themselves, it creates an convenient opportunity they can paint a monster that must be put down.

This is dangerous not only because it validates the far-right’s concerns but also helps no one but further alienate those outside of the fight politically. Lets consider who will be marginalized if the far-left engages in a literal crusade to defend Islam by any means necessary. The first ones to get silenced would be the online memelords that post harmless memes simply because the terrorist used a lot of memes like the Remove Kebab song in his massacre footage, which has been deleted from Youtube as we speak.

Then there are historians like Iniciativa Condor, Real Crusades History and myself that are personally fascinated by the Crusades, the Reconquista and the Great Turkish War. Because the terrorist now used several references like the Battle of Tours, the Battle of Vienna, Skanderbeg, the Russo-Turkish War and many others (though ironically not Vlad the Impaler), I imagined we will be ostracized when discussing such subjects in the open out of fear of another Christchurch. In fact, I’ve been warned by personal relatives that I shouldn’t be vocal about it anymore.

And then on a more serious scale... There are critics of Islam as a religion, specially of Muslim background. Regardless if atheistic or religious, these people were already under enough scrutiny in their home countries who do everything to suppress criticism of Islam even secular societies like Indonesia and Turkey, the former in particular exploits its law Article 301 about “insulting Turkishness” which is misused to arrest dissidents. There is a former Muslim Youtuber I am subscribed, the Apostate Prophet who while deeply denouncing the attack, received messages asking if he was happy about Muslims being killed. What kind of fucked up perspective is this where criticism of Islam is equated with sanctioning the death of Muslims?

Now on the worst case of all. Consider that there is an actual epidemic of rape that liberals have turned an blind eye on Europe because it means tackling a very uncomfortable topic which goes contrary to what works in their agenda.

If what happens on Europe is bad, then its infinitely worse what is happening around the world, specially in the Middle-East where Christians are facing an actual genocide by jihadists and fundamentalists which has been going on for years now, but we have only started paying attention now that the Middle-East began to spill into the West. Furthermore, this attack will certainly result in retaliation since they have found less excuse for. Remember the Regensburg lecture by Pope Benedict when he quoted the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Palailogos for criticizing Muhammed and the entire Islamic world went apeshit with Iraq in particular killing Assyrians in retaliation as if they had anything to do with it. Just because of an controversial statement by the Pope.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not leaving the alt-righters celebrating this atrocity in their echo chambers off the hook either. I’ve seen how static /pol/ users were at seeing the footage of him shooting up innocents, advocating for more terrorist attacks to be called out, trolling users who said innocents shouldn’t be targeted or those accusing the terrorist of being a Mossad agent or a Shia Muslim. Its somewhat surprising you see: /pol/ hates Muslims too they think Jewish people are much, much worse (something which the shooter didn’t do). Hell I heard the Saudi Royal Family is in fact Jewish behind close doors. Consider these are the kind of people who are also in love with Bashar al Assad who portrays himself as the secular side of the Syrian Civil War that protects minorities when in fact this is also a ruse.

Similarly, for all their bitching about Western civilization falling, they are unsympathetic to the plight of Christians around the world because they are non-white and follow a “Semitic religion”. Not a single word about Asia Bibi being on death row, the persecution of Copts in Egypt or explosion of churches in  They have trivialized the word of genocide by comparing low birth-rates with actual fucking persecution, exiling, destruction of heritage that minorities suffer in the Middle-East. Also speaking as a Brazilian even one fascinated with Western heritage, they’d still advocate my death because I am non-white (I hate using the term “POC” because its patronizing) and they’d want us to stay in their shitty lane.

Or Erdogan’s comments will end up pushing someone to actually try to assassinate him (unlikely considering Kurds haven’t been pushed hard enough to consider assassinating him despite all the things they have done to their people, a foreigner will likely have even less motivation for doing so), but I don’t think that man will go down peacefully as he expects. The whole point of this massacre was to literally divide the world into left-wing and right-wing, with the shooter expecting that whites begin genociding foreigners regardless of religion (he simply chose a mosque because it was too obvious, he denounces Latinos and Indians who are majority Catholic and Hindu respectively). I’d argue that in addition to being a national socialist and a fascist, I think he is an anarchist too - because for a guy committed to such a cause, he did a lot of harm to it by killing children and filming it.  Sam: basically she made a deal with lucifer and runs many errands for them. But also they helped her a LOT when they helped her escape a shitty transphobic environment and also the two became best friends? So i mean she doesn’t get paid but that takes up a lot of her time

Also she, at one stage, becomes part of this thing called the council which i haven’t quite worked out how they work in this universe yet. Theyre a bunch of strong magic people who work in coordination with the Champion (more on this below) to put down rules about magic. Theyre a reused concept from this story i made when i was like. 10. So the idea does need some reworking.

 Amelia: amelia is the champion, which is basically the title given to the person who wins at a big magic competition. Its a p big job, lots of publicity and pr and often regretted by the people who do end up getting there

(like? This one guy? He was kinda like “oh yeah sounds fun” and then he fucking won and he was like “lmao i’ll lose next year” and then he kept the position for 7 years and after that got so fucking sick of it he faked his assassination and became a reclusive mysterious millionaire)

Anyway she enjoys it for the first while until there is a real threat of her being assassinated unlike the aforementioned dude

 9. How do they react to confrontation?

 Sam: similar way to what i described before. Like. jsut the little things. Cursing them with the help of lucifer, becoming their grandmother, you know. The usual ways people deal with confrontation.

Amelia: curiosity, further questioning, keeping calm, kinda just. Being chill about it. She wants to make herself a better person, in general, and if someone is deliberately being a confrontational asshole she prefers to just state her point calmly.

 10. Do they have a criminal record?

 Sam: you know? Probably? She kills a bunch of assholes where it’s required, but also she legally doesn’t exist? So? Idk? She’s been arrested a few times, but considering there is no information on her existence at all-

*shrugs* idfk how the law works.

 Amelia: well, technically, no, she only did illegal things last universe and had a pretty fancy upbringing this universe, so there was no reason for her to do the illegals and also like. Public image and stuff. She worries a lot about public image.

 11. What’s their favourite plant?

 Another thing which i feel i have mentioned somewhere but idfk where

 Sam: likes hydrangeas. They’re pretty.

Amelia: can i just say. It is definitely not catnip. Actually. Maybe? Like. she had some pretty fuckin negative experiences with catnip where she destroyed reality for like a solid five seconds by accident and went to purgatory, but also she made two life friends out of it, so? Maybe catnip after all.

 12. Can they play any instruments?

 Sam: “does the kazoo count”

Amelia: nope

 But because this was boring, i’m going to do a special guest feature from her half brother ryan who is a semi-popular youtube vlogger/musician-y dude. or . whatever this world’s equivalent of youtube is. Uh. metube. Yotube. I’ll think about it.

 Ryan: he plays the guitar and sings and he’s damn fucking good at it and he knows it. Also he shares the same combination of forgetting how to outlet his anger in healthy ways + poor impulse control which means that about once every six months he has to buy a new guitar because he couldn’t get that song right and he hit the guitar against the floor.

(his dad is a writer and also an archangel,and one time he couldn’t work out how to start off a scene right so he exploded his laptop and had to use a typewriter for the four weeks while his other archangel buddy was fixing it - i’m getting off topic here)

 13. What are they proudest of?

 Sam: i guess just. Her life in general? Like. she’s survived up to this point, she’s doin shit, maybe not the shit she expected to be doing or the shit she imagined she’d be doing but she’s still doin it. Like. fuck you life. I survived. And she’s proud of that.

Amelia: that one time when she managed to keep her champion title the first time? And also when she made friends with the guy who she thought was a girl and also dead who turned out to be not a girl and alive and also was the champion for seven years rememebr that guy yeah that’s this guy. Anyway she made friends with him after settling some differences. And also when she stopped a whole organisation from murdering her yeah that was good too.

 14. What’s their biggest insecurity?

 Sam: okay this is Definitely Not Me Projecting here (hint: it’s me projecting) but she hates being seen as masculine at all and is very insecure when people refer to her or see her as masculine? Like if u call her butch She Will Cry and also why would you do that bc her and her girlfriend are femme as heck

Amelia: public image public image public image public image

Like. she doesn’t want to look bad, or like a bad public leader, but also, she just wants to do her own thing, u kno?

 15. What do they most often dream about?

Like. literally dream or daydream?

 Sam: probably. Mostly happy stuff. Plus random occasional vivid recollections of tramatic experiences.

Amelia: honestly who the fuck knows (i’d answer this properly but I am Almost Out O f Time)
