Magnus Archives Relisten 6, MAG 6 Squirm
Sorry this is late, but hey, Worm Sex Guy! You hate to see it.
Facts: Statement of Timothy Hodge, regarding his sexual encounter with Harriet Lee and her subsequent death. Statement given December 9, 2014.
Statement Notes: Really one of the most destroyed characters in the series. Man works from home, pretty isolated, gets a few days off. Decides to go to a club and hook up with a cute girl. Immediately contracts demon STD and has to burn his house down. Absolutely crushing loss for the weirdo community.
Substances are brought up again in this episode. Hodge states that he does drink and use drugs, but wasn't drunk that night. This was particularly note-worthy in this episode because, while Jon usually cites someone's substance use as a reason to dismiss their statement, he believes Hodge encountered one of Prentiss' victims even though he admits to drinking that night. This proves that Jon was just looking for excuses to dismiss statements, not actually doubting the existence of the supernatural.
"Writhe."
That verb, "writhe." That encompasses so much of the fear in this episode, so much of Jane Prentiss. That's what's always scared me about the worms: the way the crawl, and dig, and writhe. Jonny is such an incredible writer because he puts that image in your head well before you can even fathom Prentiss as a long-term threat. He makes you afraid before you know what to be afraid of.
Another motif that comes up in this episode is the sense of false security. When Lee enters Hodge's apartment, she calms down. Even though she doesn't have a real reason to, she thinks she's safer there. I think this is a really realistic element that Jonny Sims uses often. Real people know they're more likely to be killed by a friend than a stranger, that you're not safer just because the light's on, that the blanket doesn't do anything, but we let these things make us feel safe and secure anyway. It makes sense that a horror character would do the same thing.
Lee mentions that when she woke up after being "mugged" by Prentiss, there was no wound where she was "stabbed." Assuming this is where the worm pierced her, this means that they can burrow into people without scarring them. But they still scar Prentiss herself, as well as Tim and Jon. Is it because Prentiss has repeat exposure? Is it part of her identity as an Avatar? Were Jon and Tim scarred as a means to make them more afraid or just to cause them more pain? Was it because the worms were less developed? Could it have been part of the ritual?
Entity Alignment: Hmm. Hmm I wonder what entity this could be connected to. Such a difficult choice. Hmm.
In all seriousness, I love this episode as an introduction to the Rot. It not only sets up the rest of the season but also how Prentiss functions. Once again, you don't understand why you should be afraid yet, but you know you should be.
Shout out to the Desolation for Hodge burning down his house. Very interesting that most of the Fears can be destroyed through the Desolation. Although I'm sure their ritual was flawed, I do think they were second most likely to succeed, right after the Eye obviously.
Speaking of the Eye, Sims really effectively foreshadows the crux of things through the paranoia motif. While they're in the club, Hodge says that Harriett kept checking the doors and looking at the exits, and she kept nervously glancing around as they walked home. She knows something is coming for her, she knows she should be afraid. The knowledge of what is going to happen is what makes it all the worse. This is why I think it always had to be the Eye who would end the world; people need some level of awareness to be truly afraid of something. Even the horrifying lack of awareness that comes from the Stranger or the Spiral becomes simple confusion without a moment or two of clarity. The Eye makes everyone in the apocalypse keenly aware of what is attacking them, what will happen to them, and that is why they're all so deeply afraid.
Character Notes: Jon explicitly states that he knows Prentiss is an issue. He acknowledges that she has consistently attacked people and caused harm through supernatural means. Yet he still attempts to deny other statements. The fact that he keeps up this facade for so long really shows how it isn't just denial or pretending, but a defense mechanism. If he doesn't look to hard at things, they can't hurt him. But because he was Eye-aligned from the start, he has to keep looking at things. He can't help himself.
(He also established that Prentiss' worms are canonically an STD, do with this what you will)
Sasha's really collected evidence in these last couple of episodes. So much really could have been solved if they had her skills in later seasons. That's probably why the Stranger targeted her. I miss her.

Magnus Protocol 23
Jonny Sims, did you really have to say the title like that? For reals.
Lena wading into the Alice-Sam situationship? Dissing Alice? Lena, we've talked about how you just aren't going to get out of the 'worst boss' category like this.
Is... Sam... being compelled to finish that paperwork? Does he think Lena is lying about nothing happening if it's completed? That was odd. Something's up.
She doesn't mean 'hairpiece', does she? Or like... a gun. That'd be too normal.
Smiley face
Um. All these posts have no comments. But she keeps referring comments her posts are getting. Um. What happened there?
No, please don't say you're going to put that nasty piece of coral inside you.
NO. Oh god, the sepsis, stoppit, DO NOT PUT CORAL UNDER YOUR SKIN.
Augh it's another plant person, this is a theme, plant people are a theme, I canNOT with the plant people augh lady you did not think this through I cannot stress enough that this is wrong
... Isn't this another kill your double? The coral woman has this gal's eyes. She's like her, but better. Oh no they go together.
The last post before she dies/comes to her senses has comments. And the one after when she's panicking is locked down, no comments, no likes. More social media commentary here?
Nooooooo don't go back in the break room aaaaugh fine I'll go find the transcripts.
NO. Sam. TAKE THAT BACK. THEY ARE NOT DEAD. THEY'RE IN SCOTLAND. WITH THE GOOD COWS. SUCKS THAT YOU SUCK BUT THEY'RE FINE. BITE ME.
Basira and Helen? If there's a Basira... is there a Daisy? Can I have both of my favorite murder cops back? C'mooooon let's goooooo.
Gwen's still on high alert, things are going well there, sorry about the demotion hun but did you really want to go talk to externals any more (I know, I know, you think that one external won't eat you for lunch but SHE WOULD, Okay, please.
Alice, don't be mean to Gwen, please don't be mean to Gwen, it's fine when she's in fighting form but...
Oh. See? You're nice. Sometimes, anyway. Good job Alice.
Alice doesn't sound shocked. Concerned, but not shocked. Tell me more about how you're not getting involved, Alice.
WELCOME BACK ARCHIVIST! MONSTER JON MONSTER JON MONSTER JON
Still torn between wanting that to really be monster!Jon and the 'deaths' being a cover for Jon and Martin going full Avatar, and wanting them to be safe in Scotland with the good cows. I contain multitudes (but no coral).
Oop, they're cluing into the tape recorders!

Hello, @a-mag-a-day. Apologies for the deception but I rather wanted to make sure you started reading, so I thought it best not to announce myself. I'm assuming you're alone; you always did prefer to read your statements in private. I wouldn't try too hard to stop reading; there's every likelihood you'll just hurt yourself. So just listen. Now, shall we turn the page and try again?
Statement of landscaping-your-mind regarding episode 160 of The Magnus Archives.
Statement begins.
So, from all the stuff I scheduled for today you can probably tell I really like episode 160 of The Magnus Archives, right? Like, good lord, it is... it is a time. (Also, the words were really good (and also there's poetry) so :D incentive!)
Firstly, though, I have to say something. It's not the Watcher's Crown. The Watcher's Crown is the ritual Jonah Magnus attempted years ago. This is unnamed in canon, but Jonny said it could've been called The Magnus Archives.
Secondly... I would like to draw your attention towards the description of the youtube version of this episode. (to paraphrase)
The Magnus Archive discovers that some escapes are a lot easier than others.
Ahahahahaha AHAHAHAAHAHAH WHAT-
I hate this so much. Like, with a burning passion. "The Magnus Archives discovers that some escapes are a lot easier than others" COME TO MY HOME AND KILL ME YOU COWARD! It just hurts, it just... hurts.
He can escape London, but he can't escape his ✨ purpose ✨
You ever think about how The Magnus Archives follows the story of Magnus' Archive? I do. A lot. I haven't even started listening yet, god, this episode am I right?
MARTIN (Joking) Or, (huffed laugh) or it is, and she just cleaned it up really well. (They both make uncomfortable chuckles) ARCHIVIST …Yes. (The Archivist makes an uneasy noise)
THEYRE BOTH SO AWKWARD THEY HAVEN'T TALKED TO A NORMAL HUMAN IN OVER A YEAR
Just their really awkward laughter, oh my godd they're so endearing your honour, I'm so glad this episode and TMA ends at the 5 minute mark (< in denial)
ARCHIVIST Hopefully a long way out there. (soft) But I think we’re okay
THEY ARE IN LOVE YOUR HONOUR
I just love how soft Jon's voice gets around Martin, like, like, eeeee i just love them i love them they're the reason im aro bc i know i will never love someone romantically as much as jmart loves each other /j
MARTIN Oh, n-no, not yet. I was actually gonna head down into the village to go pick something up?
Ooooh yay I get to share my "where are they in scotland" headcanons! I think they're near Dunnet, because it's pretty far north and in the Highland area, and it's also got allegedly the only full time gunshop north of Inverness, and... yknow, it is Daisy's safehouse.
ARCHIVIST Anyway, don’t tell me the phonebox down there doesn’t appeal to your retro aesthetic.
your honour they're lightheartedly teasing each other <3
ARCHIVIST I’ll be fine.
SOFT!
(update im wrtinging with a cat on my lap now hes big. im balancing my computer on my leg.)
MARTIN I assume it’s her attempt at a- a, a varied diet? Eating your greens, you know? ARCHIVIST (Amused) Probably. (reassured) I’m sure it’ll work fine
hhh them <3 it's just like they're so... they're happy. they're so happy, and it's like nothing gold will stay or whatever
they had such a short amount of time
i wish they were ok
MARTIN …I will give you some privacy. Go for a walk. ARCHIVIST (Warmly) Let me know if you see any good cows. MARTIN Obviously I’m going to tell you if I see any good cows.
I'm...
them being happy is almost worse, right. because what once was a surprise we now know will happen, we have to deal with the dread, and it's all bitter now, the happiness is rotten because of what lurks after.
some people can listen to the first five minutes and feel okay, but me?
for me it just hurts.
ARCHIVIST (CONT’D) (Pleasantly) Statement of Hazel Rutter regarding a fire in her childhood home. Original statement given August 9th, 1992. Audio recording by Jonathan Sims, The Archivist. Statement begins.
He sounded so happy... he sounded so happy.
This is the first time he's happy before he reads a statement. He was happy, he was hiding from the police and the hunters and Daisy and Not!Sasha with his boyfriend in Scotland. And then, and then Jonah Magnus comes in and decides to end the world like a bastard.
I don't want to hit play. I don't want to know what comes next. I want to stop listening. I want Jon and Martin to be okay. I want it to be the real statement of Hazel Rutter.
I just want it to be the real statement of Hazel Rutter.
I get it, right, horror tragedy! This was the desired effect. I am supposed to be feeling these emotions. These emotions being very sad. Well done to Jonny, lovely writing. Fantastic! I love TMA with my whole heart. I think that it's fantastic. I don't want to hit play though. I'm here for the characters suffering, I got in through The Hermit Archives, I wanted more of the horror! I am here for suffering! I'm here for the suffering. I'm hitting play.
Statement of Jonah Magnus regarding Jonathan Sims, The Archivist. Statement begins.
He could have just ended the world. Like, the whole... forcing Jon to monologue about all the times he was manipulated into furthering Jonah's plan? That's fucked. That is fucked. Just put the ritual there you slimy piece of shit!
It’s rare that you get the chance to monologue through the voice of another, and you can’t tell me you’re not curious.
*me to my dog, in the "talking to a dog" voice* You wanna kill him too! Hey! You wanna kill him too!
Like, okay, so you're Jon and you're reading this statement and you can't stop, and this bastard says "you can't tell me you're not curious." Tell me that's not going to make him think that if he tried a little harder then he would've been able to stop reading. Tell me that's not going to make him think that a part of him wanted to end the world, and that's why he's still reading. Tell me that's not going to make him blame himself even more.
The only way to ensure I did not suffer the tribulations of what I believed to be an inevitable transformation was to bring it about myself.
He's so bloody arrogant. He puts himself above the entire world. It makes sense, he's from Regency era England, but like, it's still... really awful. Awful person.
Beyond that, I was getting older, and mortality began to weigh more heavily on my mind. How much in this world is done because we fear death, the last and greatest terror?
When I fear death I distract myself, not try to end the world. Like, this guy is just so evil. His only redeeming quality is being funny sometimes.
Everyone dies, Jack Magnet, you just chose to be a bastard about it.
Of course, I had to make sure the location was kept under my control while I worked on revising my plans, and so I moved the organization I had founded to assist in my research down to London, and the Institute as you know it, was born.
Right, so The Magnus Protocol's Magnus Institute was located in Manchester, and I'm not an expert on the geography of the United Kingdom, and basically know nothing about Manchester, bar that it has the... football, I want to say, team Manchester United? I don't know how I know that. But it seems as though Jonah Magnus didn't attempt his ritual, or attempted it some other way in that universe.
You see, the role of Archivist has been part of the Beholding for as far back as my research can go. This isn’t uncommon for the Powers; most of the beliefs around them are guesswork and fallible human interpretation, but there are certain through lines and consistencies that can be spotted, regardless of the trappings.
I wonder what the others are. The Dancer could be one - The Dancer in The Unknowing. I think Jonny said in a QnA, but you know, the author is dead, he's speaking to us posthumously, that The Architect could have been one. Not sure what others. If y'all have any ideas... 👀
More than once I thought she must secretly be of the Hunt; but there was never that sick joy in her, that thrill of predator and prey. She had simply decided that this was her position in life, and went about it with a practicality that even I found disconcerting at times.
Ok, Mr. Jonah "orchestrates twelve traumatising events for this one guy and gets him to end the world" Magnus. He cannot talk, he cannot talk at all. Sure, she sacrificed people, but she wasn't malicious. She did it for a cause. Did she believe she was good? I'm not sure she cared.
Jonah Magnus is just awful for his own self gain.
You see, the thing about the Fears is that they can never be truly separated from each other. When does the fear of sudden violence transition into the panic of hunted prey? When does the mask of the Stranger become the deception of the Spiral? Even those that seem to exist in direct opposition rely on each other for their definition as much as up relies on down. To try and create a world with only the Buried makes as much sense as trying to conceive a world with only down.
Gerry's colour explanation makes a lot of sense if you don't conceive of it as a traditional colour wheel. They're growing out in every direction, they all overlap with each other.
Sure, the fear of The Eye may seem in direct opposition to the fear of The Stranger, but let's take Jon, for instance. Is it not sort of Stranger to have some guy in a coffee shop staring at you with his autistic eyes, a person you don't know, but who definitely knows you?
What about the fear of The Buried and the fear of The Vast. Episode 195 covers that pretty handily. They're all interconnected with all of the others. Separating them makes them easier to understand (and invertedly makes them actually separated), but it isn't them, not truly. They are connected intrinsically.
Even the coffin! The fear of being alone in the dark is a part of the coffin.
Because the thing about the Archivist is that, well, it’s a bit of a misnomer. It might, perhaps, be better named: The Archive. Because you do not administer and preserve the records of fear, Jon. You are a record of fear, both in mind as you walk the shuddering dread of each statement, and in body as the Powers each leave their mark upon you. You are a living chronicle of terror.
I've been doing a lot of thinking about this. The Archivist is something... defined by how they feed their patron, but The Archive is defined by how they've been hurt to bring it into the world. He's not defined by even a person-like role, he's something molded by Jonah Magnus' desires to end the world.
I wrote a little poem about it, which I shall share here, because I am cringe but I am free, unlike Jon. RIP
He's not a person with a name, He's a vessel of destruction, He's not a person who feels pain, It's necessary for production, That he's scarred and marked, By things that lurk in the dark, Believe himself useless, Or it'll be fruitless, And at the end of the day, He's no person, no name, He's a plan that has come to fruition.
Also, he calls himself The Archivist, perhaps viewing himself as... something that hurts others, rather than something that is hurt for a purpose.
I’ll admit, my options were somewhat limited, but my god, when you came to me already marked by the Web, I knew it had to be you. I even held out some small hope you had been sent by the Spider as a sort of implicit blessing on my whole project and, do you know what, I think it was.
"I chose you" "I'll admit, my options were somewhat limited" Mr. Magnet, he was chosen by the web. Jonah's just not afraid to be puppeted.
So, when Jane Prentiss attacked, I watched eagerly, one hand on the gas release from the start.
This line fucked me up. "One hand on the gas release from the start." Just... like it just sticks in my mind. How he held all their lives in the palm of his hand, how he let Sasha die, and Tim get eaten by worms, because he wanted his bloody perfect Archive.
One hand on the gas release from the start, while all of them almost - or did - die(d).
Like, what gets me is how fucked up Jon was afterwards, how he was asking everyone for their statements, shutting them up before they got to the part where they'd mention Jon and Tim getting eaten with worms. What gets me is how Elias was there and Jon was what, looked like a bloody mummy! He didn't have second thoughts when he saw...
He knew everything. He saw everything. He saw how fucked up Jon was over e v e r y t h i n g. (everything)
That's what gets me.
Between the stabbing and at least two desperate flights into its door, you’re marked very deep by the Spiral.
And, you know, the manipulation, the gaslighting, the betrayal. I saw an interesting post on this, but I can't seem to find it. I'll look in the posts I've rbed tagged TMA meta, I'll link it in a reblog if I find it.
Honestly, I had nothing to do with Melanie and her Slaughter adventure, but when I saw the situation, I made sure to trap her here, so whenever her rage bubbled over you were right there, a ready target.
You know after Jon's second kidnapping that could have totally been resolved how Jonah made Jon stand in front of Melanie while she wanted to kill Jonah with a knife, and how it's like oh, right, yeah, use Jon as a bloody meat shield to get her angry at him, make him the scapegoat, that was intentional. It was intentional to destroy everyone in the Archives' interpersonal relationships, and then have Jon. A ready target for hatred and vitriol.
How is Martin, by the way? He looks well. You will keep an eye on him when all this is over, won’t you? He’s earned that.
I think that Jonah Magnus should eat shit and die.
The power of the Ceaseless Watcher flows through you, and the time of our victory is here.
If you replace the Ceaseless Watcher with Determination then it reads like an Undertale save.
* The power of Determination flows through you, and the time of our victory is here.
Don’t worry, Jon. You’ll get used to it here, in the world that we have made.
This also ties in with the above, I hate that he says "our victory" "the world that we have made." Jon didn't consent to this, Jon didn't want this, Jon was made to be an unwilling conduit of the apocolypse and Jonah Magnus is insinuating that he chose it, the victim blaming little prick!
You who watch and know and understand none. You who listen and hear and will not comprehend. You who wait and wait and drink in all that is not yours by right. Come to us in your wholeness. Come to us in your perfection. Bring all that is fear and all that is terror and all that is the awful dread that crawls and chokes and blinds and falls and twists and leaves and hides and weaves and burns and hunts and rips and bleeds and dies! Come to us. I OPEN THE DOOR!
GREAT INCANTATION! 10/10! And it's actually recitable, unlike the TBI one.
ARCHIVIST Look at the sky, Martin. Look at the sky. It’s looking back.
That is a fucking fantastic final line of the episode. All of it, four seasons leading up to this moment. Look at the sky. It's looking back.
Fuck dude!
(The Archivist begins a fractured, delirious, humourless, laugh that does not end)
That laugh.
That laugh is just... haunting. I love it so much. It makes me want to cry. I used to have it saved on my phone and I'd just listen to it over and over and over again and get more and more disturbed and heartbroken.
That laugh. That broken, horrific laugh.
I can't get over it.
And thus ends season 4 of The Magnus Archives. With a broken laugh in front of a window, leading out to the doomed world.
Episode 160 is quite possibly my favourite metaplot episode of The Magnus Archives, the way the whole plan was revealed, the awful manipulations that were exposed... that laugh.
I leave you all to think on this. To think on the Archive née the Archivist née Jonathan Sims, laughing at the world he has unwillingly and unwittingly doomed.
Goodnight, a-mag-a-day, goodnight. /ref

Question for youuuuu
Hi! I have never actually listened to the mechanisms, but I’m a big tma fan and really like the very slight aus where it’s like the mechanisms were the archivists college band things, so I’ve read a lot of fanfic that basically references them with not a lot of context yk?
Also. Because I have watched some rusty quill stream vods on YouTube, I’m now getting like 9 second mechanisms clips recommended to me.
And. Last little thing. I am a big alt folk person, and last night I remembered this band I love that I basically totally forgot about and hadn’t been listening to for a bit, and went and just shuffled their songs and it was great. (Robert hallow and the holy men! If you were curious)
But. I was like scrolling through the similar artists, and the mechanisms showed up again.
So now partly because I just keep seeing them come up and partly because of curiosity. I’m tempted to actually check them out.
But I’m really bad with new music, just kind of in general I like my comfortable and familiar songs. And I know really nothing about them besides like. Some of their names and the whole like immortal space pirate thing. But like musically? I have like no info.
So basically uh.
What should I expect? What like. Kind of music would I be getting into? Is it worth it?
I’m asking mostly because I’m looking for someone to be enthusiastic so I have a reason to push my hesitancy against new things aside btw.
Sorry this is so long lmao, and thank you :)
OH MY GOD????? IM FUCKING HONORED THANK YOU
Okay so to start out with, they have 4 main albums. Once Upon A Time In Space, The Bifrost Incident, High Noon Over Camelot, and Ulysses Dies At Dawn. They tend to vary in terms of what their music sounds like, but they always have the same instruments, more or less. (Glockenspiel, flute, drums, sometimes Jonny on the harmonica, bass, guitar that I honestly cannot tell if it's electric or acoustic, viola, violin, Jessica Law's amazing vocals, and I think that's it but I'm probably forgetting something else). High Noon Over Camelot has a lot of Western influence, and is very folk-leaning-country, is the best way I can describe it?
You said you listen to TMA, so here's a couple people to know - Frank Voss and Jessica Law. Frank Voss plays Ashes O'Reilly, an arsonist who burned down their home planet and joined up with the Mechs. Here's the song with their backstory. It's very much like jazz, I think. In TMA, Frank Voss plays Basira Hussain. Jessica Law plays the Toy Soldier, a sentient wooden man (or, according to a tweet she made, a metal man that just looks wooden?) It essentially pretends to be alive, and will obey any order given to it. It pretended to be a rich lady's husband for a while, and then fell in love with an Angel - when it wasn't reciprocated, it ripped out the Angel's voice box. Not sure if it uses it as its own voice box, I forgot. No backstory song for TS sadly :(((. In TMA, Jessica Law plays Nikola Orsinov! And then there's Jonny Dville, first mate, killed his dad for money, killed the guy who paid him to kill his dad, burnt down the guy's casino, and joined up with the Mechs. Here's the song with his backstory. Not quite sure what genre that song falls under, sorry! Jonny D'ville is played by Jonny Sims, who is Jonathan Sims. Don't worry, it's really easy to remember /j.
Anyways, I'm gonna assume you're not very familiar with their whole shtick from what you said - basically, each of their albums tells a story, except for Tales To Be Told Vol 1 and 2. In those, all of the individual songs tell individual stories. There is Death To The Mechanisms, but I'd listen to that last. You can listen to the other albums in any order, though! There are some songs that are entirely narration, no singing. If that's not your thing, TheVoidSings on YouTube, who is an absolute SAINT, has a playlist of all the tracks that do NOT have that narration.
Now, the music type. WARNING FOR GUNSHOT NOISES IN ALMOST ALL THE ALBUMS. Not sure if that bothers you, but they do often have gunshot sound effects. If you like, I can compile a list of songs that have the gunshot effect so you can avoid it, if it would make it a no go for you. High Noon Over Camelot - Western. Heavy folk & country. Once Upon A Time In Space....not sure what to class it as. It's a mixture of things. It can be very loud and fast-paced, but sometimes slow? There's some songs that are like a waltz. Some are very fast and loud. The Bifrost Incident - the best thing I can class it as is "train". Very loud, fast-paced, but melodic in a way. Ulysses Dies At Dawn is heavy blues influence, kinda jazz? idk I don't really listen to jazz sorry :(. And while I am biased, it is ABSOLUTELY worth getting into. Like I said, if a whole album at once seems too intimidating, Tales To Be Told vols 1 and 2 have individual songs that each tell a story. Their music as a whole is always pretty loud and fast paced, so don't go into it expecting waltz, classical, slow and soft stuff.
I'm sorry this took me so long to answer 😭😭😭 I hope this is OK please let me know if you have any more questions!!!!!!

slasher films as we know them - post the original halloween movie in 1978 - were created in part as a response to the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s as a kind of “subliminal birth control” for teenagers. because of this, characters who are more promiscuous and more open to talking about dating and/or sex are normally killed off grotesquely by the movie’s villain, while the less sex-focused main character makes it through victorious at the end. this dichotomy means surviving characters of the slasher genre can and have been seen as asexual coded. while the magnus archives is at its core a horror, the existence of the slaughter, the flesh, and even the hunt means there are also slasher elements present. therefore, to keep with the genre’s tradition, jonathan sims the archivist must make it through to the end, survive, and beat that motherfucker jonah magnus into the ground forever. in this essay i will

Yo. Just. Idk. Thought I might as well ask you since I got that question from a post of yours but like. Wtf are we supposed to tag Tommy stuff that's about the dsmp anyways? Cuz like. I get that we don't necessarily need dreamwastaken and stuff but I feel like Tommy. Is just. Very unspecific? Like it's 2am so maybe I'm missing something glaringly obvious because brain not be working rn but except for ctommy I can't think of anything.
Also, do people on tumblr really just... Be part of a fandom of tommyinnit but just the vlogging part? Really? That sounds so odd to me.
context: [Link] @ladycatland
honestly, I have no idea !
I'd argue that we Do need the tags, not just for visibility but for organization. I tag character names on my posts so I can find content for those characters And content creators when I want to. likewise if I want to find character specific content I'll search those tags on tumblr in general or on someone's blog.
this kind of organization is much more necessary for something like the dream smp which has a Lot of characters, a wealth of content, and an on-going plot. there's much more reason to Need to separate out that content if you have something specific you want to find. as opposed to say, manhunt, which is a lot more condensed in its content and fan content.
I can understand how it could be annoying for someone searching for content for something smaller that a creator is involved in, but singling out a specific person to try to force content out of the tags is rather pointless when its already common practice in most of the fandom and Has a genuine use otherswise.
obviously this is different from how most fandoms operate (an actor typically won't have the characters they've played tagged with their own name) but that's obviously because the dream smp characters all share names with their streamers on top of the serious storytelling starting up in a space that didn't originally have it.
imagine walking up to fans of the magnus archives and telling them that they can tag their fanart with tma but Not jonathan sims because they're annoyed that they can't find pictures of jonny sims past all the fandom gunk.
moreover, it'd seem more practical to me to have vlog content congregated under something like "tom simmons" to give it a distinct space away from dsmp content if you're looking for that. since it's Way too late to untangle the cc's from the characters they play, and the cc's themselves certainly aren't doing that.
of course, all of that is assuming they weren't just annoyed that it was a post that made c!dream look bad and they wanted to find a way to try to push it out of the tags so they didn't have to look at it. which, I'll never understand how the kinda apologists that want to gatekeep what goes in which tags always seem to find my tamest and Shortest posts to bother me about it on. I've got some Real essays on dream if you want something to be annoyed about

Hope you're doing well and hydrating! If you don't mind, might you have you any headcanons on which Oxford college Jon Archivist Sims went to?
Y E S MY TIME HAS COME
thank you for this ask, anon!!! be warned: these opinions all come from a happily biased standpoint
ok so we know georgie and jon met at uni, and we know georgie went to balliol, so jon could have gone to balliol too. but that’s boring. so my friend and i talked about this a while back and we agreed they Have to have met at plush, oxford’s LGBTQ+ nightclub (old plush not new plush) (old plush near park end, with the stripper pole and nicer bouncers and generally better ambience) (UGH I MISS OLD PLUSH), and jon’s been on the pole. i don’t care how stuffy he is. everyone has been on the stripper pole. jon was a theatre kid, of course he’s been on the pole. he was on the pole, ok, and slipped and georgie caught him and they nearly knocked over the shirtless lad in booty shorts with a giant PLUSH tramp stamp who walks around the dancefloor every tuesday night selling £1 jaegerbombs and poppers off a tray, and thus began oxford’s most powerful fictional bi bond.
anyway, sorry, that was off-topic. look there are too many oxford colleges and the conclusions my friend and i reached (we are both from the same college) (please don’t guess which one) are based solely on college VIBES. maybe inaccurate vibes, but they are strongly held gut feelings and i invite any offended members of those colleges to fight me (please don’t, i’m very unfit). we both wanted jon to have gone to ours, of course, but sadly he doesn’t have the Vibes. she wanted merton (partly undeserved reputation for being a very studious college) and while my brain accepts that logically, my gut disagrees. somerville? artsy, located in jericho, we do love somerville but jon is really not cool enough to be in jericho. st. peter’s is a shout, he does have st. peter’s energy. friend suggested st. hugh’s because it’s notoriously out of the way, and lincoln for being near (but not too near) georgie’s balliol. however, st. hugh’s is too far from plush (even if you don’t like going out — and i maintain that early 30s jon might be a cardigan grandpa but 18-to-early-20s jon, ace biromantic theatre nerd, Must have been a very specific brand of oxford twink — so much of oxford’s student queer life is centred on plush that you’ll probably try it at least once. i’m still in the I Will Not Go Out Unless It’s Plush camp), and lincoln has a great library, therefore bad-at-library-science jarchivist sims does not vibe.
at last we settled on magdalen, big college on high street with a deer park and a bridge and fancy school both named after it nearby, seen as academically good and prestigious but not like balliol where georgie definitely fistfought a tory on the front quad. (jon and georgie going to port n policy nights for the cheap port and opportunities to beat up oxford tories? yes please. do note i have never attended port n policy.....the lib dems’ spirited discussions, on the other hand........) it’s huge. it’s pretty. it’s serious (my college is Not, and i love the stupid place and wouldn’t have it any other way). it just has jon vibes, ok, and he would appreciate the may day tradition of staying up all night and showing up to magdalen bridge — hungover, still covered in glitter — at 6am to hear magdalen’s choir sing from the top of the tower. i am very sorry this response got so terribly long. no i do not take constructive criticism. jon archivist ‘ace bicon’ sims went to magdalen college, oxford until/unless jonny sims says otherwise

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF JON IS OK ALREADY!??? I mean he's obviously not ok but can we please talk about it now. As for the title... Bugs?
You know, to write about all the fears that means Jonny has to "get" all of them... Like, understand them? I mean he made them so obviously but... Idk what I'm trying to say anyway the episode is starting now-
Jon! Man, he still sounds rough.
CAT!! CATACATACATACATACAYAVAYACAYACSHDHEJEJSKBDJDHEK CAT!!!
THE ADMIRAL!! bdhsnsnd wrong hand ): bby
Even the fear gods must bend before the power of CAT!!
no, don't go my love~
I no longer care about anyone else in this godforsaken podcast.
Jon should not be using his voice rn.
Ya sounds like corruption?
Mmm, I was a janitor once for the girls' dorm one year... I no longer use public showers if I can help it. It didn't matter how much I cleaned those showers they were always always always moldy again after a day or two. I once went way way over time with a friend and spent basically a full evening just scrubbing that whole bathroom.
The mold was back within the week.
At this point just move man. Just move out.
Oh, shoot! That's a super cool hive! Purple mold. Kinda wana draw that. Especially the bits around the eyes.
Breakon and hope! The delivery guys!
Ya, they're just delivery guys. Not aligned. I don't think.
Sasha.
Jeez, it's been almost two years? That's a long time to be this stressed. Ya, he said earlier that the past two years hadn't been kind to him. And I was thinking maybe things had been a bit rough before he was archivist but no it's actually been two years!
Man time flies when you're binging episodes huh, lol
Georgie!
Yes, tell her everything!
"I think I'm turning into one." ;-;
Dsjkajsj I love the casual use of compulsion.
Avatars! Ok so all of them are avatars but some avatars are fully monsters and others are varying levels of human? I feel like things like Michael and not-Sasha are very different from Jude and Mike. Like I would like another name for them. Or another name for the ones that aren't fully monsters. Avatars is a good name for the monsters since they aren't really themselves anymore just vessels and not really anything else. But like Jon is an avatar but he's not an Avatar ya know?
"Jonathan sims are you trying to save the world"
"...ya, I guess I am"  ;-; he sounds so happy when he said that!! See you're not a monster Jon!
"Like me" Jude is not like you!!
"Well... Shit." mood Georgie. Mood.
Oh? Does Georgie have a Statement™?

Magnus Archives Relisten 5, MAG 5 Thrown Away, Spoiler Free Version
Spoiler Free Version of my MAG 5 analysis. Let me know what you think!
Facts: Statement of Kieran Woodward, regarding items discovered in the refuse of 93 Lancaster Road, Walthamstow. Given February 23rd, 2009.
Statement Notes: There are so many posts out there comparing The Magnus Archives to the Twilight Zone because of Jon's narration and the serial creepy story format, but this episode really stands out in mind as Twilight Zone-esque. Like the Twilight Zone, some Magnus Archive episodes deal with things like childhood guilt and cult-behavior, like MAG 4. But other episodes just kind of say "Damn, isn't that fucked up? Anyway," like this one.
I do love Kieran as a character. He's just so weirdly chill and realistic about everything. There's are some statement givers who are still being tormented by fears, some who cause fear, some who are reporting on things that happened to people they know, but there's also this interesting category of people who survived because they played the game right. When the audience says "don't go in the basement" or "call the cops," they listen. Woodward gets through this statement unscathed because he moves on from the creepy dolls heads and reports the teeth, then destroys the "gift" left for him and tries to move on. Alan can't let go, Alan doesn't know the rules of the genre, that's why he doesn't make it out.
Speaking of Alan, Jonny consistently uses obsessive characters really well. There's a lot of horror media where, in real life, it would make more sense for the characters to give up on their investigations of the supernatural or to ignore it in entirely in the first place. The audience is usually (and rightfully) able to suspend reality for the sake of the story in these situations. But what's so interesting about Jonny's writing is that he explicitly states characters like Alan, like Amy Patel, can't stop themselves. It's obsession, it's all consuming, they know it's bad for them, but they just can't stop. It really adds to the audience fear because you're not the only one telling them turn back, their mind is screaming it too, but they still won't listen.
My two new favorite characters in the series are "Matt, who was raised Catholic and never shut up about it," because he is me, and David who "broke the silence by vomiting loudly into a nearby drain," because he is the most realistic horror character of all time.
Character Notes: The post-statement in this episode is just 90% Martin hate. Absolutely unhinged behavior. What if you worked at a restaurant at the end of every receipt your boss just wrote "This waiter is a goddamn loser and I hate him." Wild man Jonathan Sims everybody.
