Once... Twice... Three times a gold winner!

It’s that time of year again where we’ve been biting our nails for the past few months, awaiting the results of the Academy of Chocolate Awards. Well, the 2018 results are finally out, so read on to see how we did…

Back in February, we were busily making and carefully packing 9 different chocolates, and then sending them off to be judged at this year’s Academy of Chocolate Awards. Our entries this year included some of our latest chocolate recipes, along with a couple of brand new creations which will be released soon.

This year, the awards had more than 1200 entries from over 45 different countries, which is the biggest number to date. It’s wonderful to see such an explosion in craft chocolate, but also a bit daunting to think how many other talented chocolatiers from all over the world that we’re now competing against!

So how did we do this year? Turns out we needn’t have been nervous after all…

And here’s a list of our newly awarded chocolates:

We were delighted to receive an award for every product entered, and especially proud to have received 3 out of only 11 Golds awarded to filled chocolates. The Gold awards will be presented at a ceremony in Claridge’s in July, where the winners of this year’s special additional awards will also be announced. The ceremony is a great opportunity for us to catch up and with all our chocolatier friends from around the UK who will also be celebrating their own awards, and even a few who will be travelling to it from all over the world.

If you haven’t already tried some of our newest award winners, most can be found in our current chocolate selection boxes, and the Billionaire’s Praline is also available in larger form as a barre. You’ll have to wait a little longer to sample 2 of our Gold award winners however, as these will be part of a very special box created in collaboration with some of the UK’s best bean to bar chocolate makers. We’re currently putting the finishing touches to this box, so look out for an upcoming Newsletter with further details of what is sure to be a very special chocolate collection. Celebrating 5 NEW AWARDS from the Academy of Chocolate

We are now in our fifth year of entering the Academy of Chocolate Awards, and are delighted to announce that we have continued our pattern of receiving accolades for all chocolates entered!

This year, we entered five new chocolates taken from our Spring Collection. Lime Caramel, Honey Caramel and Rose, Cherry & Lychee all received Silver Awards, while Rhubarb Crumble and Lemon & Marzipan both picked up Bronze Awards.

The Academy of Chocolate Awards is one of the biggest and most prestigious competitions in chocolate. Each year, it attracts entries from all corners of the globe and is judged by a panel of industry experts. As a small, two-man chocolate company from Manchester, we are always delighted and humbled to see our chocolates ranked amongst the finest in the world.

Judging of the filled chocolates took place in London in late February, with the remaining categories delayed for now until it’s safe for judging to resume.

Academy of Chocolate Awards Evening 2019

It’s that time of year again – the country’s in the middle of a heatwave as we head down to London to attend the Academy of Chocolate Awards evening.

Not a bad place for a chocolate party!

Entries were sent in early February, with a nervous wait and a lot of social media stalking to see if we could spot our chocolates on judges’ plates. The filled chocolates were judged within the first week, so it was a tense wait for the next few months before the awards results were released.

We were very pleased to find that all 12 of our entries had been recognised. This year’s entries were mainly from our Vegan and Gin collections, so it was wonderful to see them perform so well.

All entries are judged blind, and we did not specify that any of our entries were vegan, so as not to influence the judges’ opinions. This means that they were judged alongside and to the same criteria as traditional truffles, and were found to be just as good – a fantastic result for our Vegan Collection.

Other entries included a new craft chocolate truffle made with Indian single-estate chocolate made by fellow Mancunians, Dormouse Chocolate, and our popular Mince Pie truffle, both of which received Silver Awards.

This year our chocolates received the following accolades:

How did we miss #nationalpeanutbutterandjellyday ?? 😱 Well, it was yesterday apparently, and we just so happened to be making some more of our peanut and raspberry bonbons, our homage to the classic pb&j. This unassuming little fella has a layer of homemade #peanut #gianduja over a tangy raspberry pate de fruit. It's one of the first chocolates we ever released, and one of the first we entered into competitions. It received a gold award from @acadofchocolate back in 2016, and we've been making it the same way ever since. Under these kitchen lights, you can barely see the little swipe of bronze that has adorned this #chocolate for the last 3 years. Perhaps it's time for a makeover 🤔 What do you think? Guatemala Rio Dulce ganache - part of our craft chocolate collaboration range. Day 19 of #MarchMeetTheMaker - Dream Collaboration. There's a number of great chefs and chocolatiers who I'd love to collaborate with, but I'm a bit of a control freak so I'm not sure how well that would go 😂 My favourite collaborations are with other artisan producers, like this bonbon made with @duffyredstar Guatemala Rio Dulce chocolate. We did a second bonbon alongside this one using Duffy's Honduras Indio Rojo chocolate. The cocoas in these chocolates come from trees from the same gene stock, planted in 2 different location and producing very different flavour profiles. We developed a unique ganache recipe to bring out the full flavour of the chocolate and highlight the difference made by environmental factors or "terroir". Both bonbons received gold at last year's #aocawards, and we are now expanding the range with some other amazing craft chocolates, starting with a single estate Indian chocolate from @dormousechocs. As truffles go, these are a bit special.
