All this effort and it doesn't even work. I'm not mad, just disappointed. Current theory is that I didn't include an important part of it in the while loop. The bot scans new posts, and I'm not gonna re-post this for the second time. It's only been actually tested two or three times including this try, and I'm keeping this as a sort of devlog. Update 2:

I restarted the OAuth apps that I made earlier today (an OAuth callback server to catch the keys, and another OAuth thing to generate the Authorization verifier). I worked almost all day to get these two to work together. The API ended up sending this error, and I don't know what it means, but it doesn't throw any errors client-side. Here's the error it throws. {'meta': {'status': 429, 'msg': 'Limit Exceeded'}, 'response': [], 'errors': [{'title': 'Limit Exceeded', 'code': 0, 'detail': 'Minor hiccup. Try again.'}]} Like, okay, great. Now I gotta actually look at the documentation and find out what this magic gibberish means, because this could relate to all those times I tried to authenticate, OR I hit the daily limit on posts seen by my bot, which I highly doubt. Update 2.5 after some research, I've learned absolutely nothing. That error code is a giant ball of nothing that basically says I exceeded a rate limit, but doesn't give any explanation as to which rate I exceeded. Thanks, Tumblr. At least Reddit threw client side errors that you didn't have to go to a broken API console to see. Fuck all of you, and I'll see you tomorrow.

Side note: I am surviving off one breakfast pizza from Casey's, one Pipeline Punch, one grape flavored 3D, 4mg Estradiol, 50mg Spironolactone, and I currently have 100mg Progesterone dissolving in my stomach, which at this point, might actually kill me. It's only 9:36 at the time of writing this, but it feels like I've been working on this for days. This is to say that I may have missed something super obvious, and if that's the case, well, I'll leave tomorrows problems to tomorrow's me.

Just woke up and re-ran all the assorted programs just to get a fresh start. I'm still getting that error code, but more importantly, my access token and secret changed? I'm not expert when it comes to stuff like this, but I though tokens and secrets are constant and specific to apps. I can't actually test this thing until the API lets me through. Update 3.5

Found the error code. It wasn't way too hard, but it means my bot probably did something way too much yesterday and I have no idea what. It works on the server's clock and goes by callendar day. This means that if a bot hits the error code at 11:59 PM, it can hit it again at 12:00 AM. For an error 429 to happen, any one of the following has to trigger it.

300 API calls per minute, per IP address.

18,000 API calls per hour, per IP address.

432,000 API calls per day, per IP address.

1,000 API calls per hour, per consumer key.

5,000 API calls per day, per consumer key.

250 new published posts (including reblogs) per day, per user.

250 images uploaded per day, per user.

200 follows per day, per user.

1,000 likes per day, per user.

10 new blogs per day, per user.

20 videos uploaded per day, per user.

60 minutes of total video uploaded per day, per user.

So I can't test this until the server's calendar deems it a new day Update 4

It still doesn't work, but I am one step closer. Because of Tumblr's broken-ass console, I've had to find an alternate way to get an OAuth key. It turns out I was using a temporary access key, which is why it changed when I re-ran everything. I had to do this by using two other scripts. One of them is Tumblr's interactive console on Github , and the other one was a Yaml parser because boy do they like to encrypt. This has been my morning so far. Day two and 5 scripts later, just to finally have something that I should've had at the start.

A confused Tumblr user's guide to r/196

In the coming weeks, many of you may notice posts containing the tags "r/196" and "196", so to avoid any confusion, I would like to explain what it is, what is going on, etc.

r/196 is a subreddit that can best be described as "condensed tumblr but a tiny bit more horny". Honestly, half of the posts are just tumblr screenshots. So the general vibe, sense of humor, and political slant are the same as Tumblr's.

As for why its all suddenly crossing over here, Reddit's dipshit CEO has been going after third party reddit viewer apps that are better than the official app for no reason at all, even going as far as to lie about one of the third party apps' developers threatening him. He is planning to put reddit API access behind a paywall at a pretty steep fee. Apparently for some of them it would run them like $20 million a year, which obviously, no third party app dev will be able to afford.

In protest, thousands of subreddits are planning to stage a blackout on June 12th, many of them some of the most popular subreddits on the site, and countless others. Such blackouts and mass protests have worked before, and as such, most subreddits plan on doing just a 2 day blackout where nothing can be done on the subreddits, which completely destroys any ad revenue and other such financial activity.

However, many are coming to realize that a mere 48 hours might not cut it, and some plan to go on hiatus indefinitely until the ceo backs down on his bullshit.

r/196 is one of those subreddits, I myself realize that this has the chance of resulting in no impact on the outcome and a dead subreddit, but its a gamble worth taking, in my opinion.

This is just a general primer on r/196, if you want to get into deep lore like "Spronkus" and the "Wasp Discourse", seek out someone who is more seasoned in the subreddit's history than I am.

Finally pulling the trigger and deleting my reddit account due to the ongoing bullshit with the API changes and spez going full cartoon villain mode earlier today. While I'm definitely having some adjustment pains getting used to this site, y'all have been SUPER welcoming and helpful and I can't thank you guys enough for that!

BTW I think the "Grok is stealing code from OpenAI" thing is bullshit, shared by people who do not understand how OpenAI works.

I believe it's way more likely that Grok is simply a finetuned version of gpt-3.5 they're paying OpenAI to actually run.

Creating and running your own LLM is VERY expensive, and takes way more time than Grok had put into it. Fine-tuning a model by using a bunch of twitter data and getting an API from OpenAI to integrate into your app is a lot more doable, especially if then you make the twitter assholes who want to use Grok pay for the tokens they're using. Hell, you could even attempt to turn a bit of a profit that way.

It is no coincidence that Grok happened when the price per token of gpt-3.5 went down due to the availability of gpt-4, in my opinion.

So when I joined Reddit, the big thing™ at the time was ice soap and 2am chilli. If I remember correctly, that was either late 2010 or 2011. Ever since then, reddit has been my primary spot to enjoy memes, content for specific fandoms, book and game recommendations, and drama recaps. Basically, anything I had an urge to consume, reddit always provided.

There were large bouts of drama before (anyone remember /r/fatpeoplehate and Ellen Pao?) but the smaller, more curated communities I primarily enjoyed were largely unaffected. But now, I can't in good conscience visit those subreddits I have frequented for upwards of twelve years because of this bullshit reddit is pulling with their API.

I am left with this large gap in my life that reddit occupied for so long. Whenever I was waiting in line, taking a break at work, or just having a veg night at home, reddit was always there. Now, I find myself trying to cobble something together between this hellsite and TikTok, but I haven't quite managed to find the fandom niches I so deeply enjoyed.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, it's almost like leaving a long term relationship and trying to untangle your life from someone you don't recognize anymore.

I guess it's time to touch grass and move on.

It's been awhile, but I have a new thought for folks starting out investing

I am working on a large-scale D&D-style banking system for a private client (my job is weird). This is putting me in touch with a lot of people in very expensive suits and it I keep pinging them:

"Let's say someone has $100 to start investing, what should they do. Like, literally $100. With $0.00 added after."

I've cobbled together some thoughts (not advice don't sue me) and cut out the bullshit and sales pitches.

Start a high-yield savings account in an FDIC insured bank. As of this writing (April 27, 2023, United States-based), it'll be somewhere between 3.5 - 4.25% APY (annual percent yield -- i.e. interest)

Go with a bank that is FDIC insured. Banks pay for this, you do not. Here are smart people talking about what FDIC is.

The percentage difference listed above is 0.75%. Moving money is a bitch, is it worth chasing 0.75%? That depends on your situation, time, etc. Here are smart people who built a calculator to help you figure it out if it's worth it to you.

Touch it as little as possible.

Start a spreadsheet that tracks your finances.

In the cell that lists the amount of this balance, give it a name. Something fun, something that speaks to you. I did this as an experiment + to participate, mine is "Slime Research Adventurer Destruction Fund".

Write a prospectus (fancy word for "this is what the goal for this cash is to do").

Slime Research Adventurer Destruction Fund prospectus: Follow the path of high-yield savings rates at {bank}. Review quarterly if other banks have a substantially better rate (+1.5%).

The entire point is to break the idea of "them not me" and "today vs. someday" and "I cannot begin to build wealth vs. someone else can."

A $100 savings INVESTMENT IN A SAVINGS ACCOUNT with a rate of 3.5-4.25% will give you interest of $3.50-4.25 at the end of the first year, then continue on growing onwards.

That is your return.

Is it as high as investing in the market? No.

Is it safer? Holy fuck yes.

When you invest in stocks, bonds, etc. you are looking for a return. This is your return.

This is not a grindset mindset work 24/7 chunk of advice. This is not a reality-disillusionment "I am struggling I need to work harder."

You need to be knowledgable about how things can work for you so you can leverage what you have, where you are, when you have it, as you can.

A high-yield savings account is not going to make you rich.

It probably won't make a difference in an emergency.

It will absolutely make a difference in non-emergency times, over a period of time.

If you don't have enough cash to invest and/or you're not comfortable investing, that's fine.

Give your savings account a name that speaks to you. This is your investment. Your savings account = your investment account.

There is no moral or ethical difference between "I have cash shoved into a savings account" and "I have cash shoved into the stock market."

The only difference is potential risk, growth, and fees (never pay for a savings account), liquidity ("how quickly can I convert this thing into cash to buy an apple at the grocery store, pay a bill, etc.").

Make money less scary via weird names and fun graphics.

Go to a piccrew site and make a catgirl with pink and blue hair.

Name your fund "Catgirlsnax Fundsies".
