Mobile application development is essential as app spending rises. Businesses must choose between Native, Hybrid, and Cross-Platform approaches based on their goals and user needs.
Native apps are built for a specific platform, like iOS or Android, offering superior performance and access to device features but require separate codebases, increasing development costs. An example is Starbucks' highly successful native app with millions of active users.
Hybrid apps use web technologies like HTML and JavaScript within a native container, allowing faster, cost-effective development across platforms but potentially facing performance issues. Instagram initially used this approach.
Cross-Platform development, utilizing frameworks like Flutter or React Native, combines the advantages of both methods by allowing a single codebase for multiple platforms. While more efficient, it may not provide the same native feel.
Each approach has strengths and weaknesses, and the right choice depends on app complexity, user experience, budget, and platform reach.

A Streamlined Approach to Mobile App Development: My Experience with Fiverr
In today's competitive mobile landscape, translating a promising app idea into a successful product requires not only a clear vision but also the expertise to bring that vision to life. Having recently undertaken this journey myself, I can confidently say that Fiverr's mobile app development services proved to be an invaluable asset. This review details my experience and the key factors that make Fiverr an exceptional platform for businesses seeking to develop their next mobile application.
Tailored Talent Acquisition
Fiverr's strength lies in its extensive network of pre-vetted freelance mobile app developers. This expansive pool of talent ensures access to a diverse range of skillsets and experience levels. During my search, I was able to meticulously evaluate countless developer profiles, ensuring I found a professional whose qualifications precisely aligned with the technical requirements of my project. This focus on targeted selection resulted in a perfect match, fostering a strong foundation for a successful development process.
Seamless Communication Channels
Once I shortlisted a few promising developers, initiating communication was a refreshingly streamlined process. Fiverr's integrated messaging system facilitated clear and concise communication with each freelancer. This platform allowed me to delve into project specifics, address any initial questions, and establish a transparent dialogue from the very beginning. The ease of communication fostered a sense of trust and ensured both parties were aligned in their vision for the project's outcome.
Tumblr media
Collaborative Development Environment
Throughout the development process, the chosen developer and I maintained a collaborative working relationship. Fiverr's user-friendly platform provided a centralized hub for file sharing, exchanging ideas, and tracking project milestones. The developer kept me consistently updated on their progress, and I was empowered to provide timely feedback at each critical stage. This collaborative approach ensured the final product remained true to my original concept while incorporating the developer's valuable technical expertise.
Cost-Effective Development
Fiverr's mobile app development services offer a compelling value proposition. By establishing a clear budget upfront, I was able to maintain complete cost transparency throughout the project's lifecycle, eliminating the risk of unforeseen expenses. Furthermore, Fiverr's secure payment system ensured my funds were safeguarded until I was fully satisfied with the final deliverable. In retrospect, the quality of the work I received significantly surpassed the investment I made, solidifying the platform's exceptional value for businesses seeking cost-effective app development solutions.
Successful App Launch and Beyond
Following the app's completion, the developer even extended their assistance by providing valuable insights into the submission process for the relevant app store (e.g., Google Play Store or Apple App Store). Their guidance streamlined the launch process, and within a short timeframe, my app was successfully published and available for download by users.
In Conclusion
For businesses seeking a streamlined and professional approach to mobile app development, Fiverr's services offer a compelling solution. From the meticulously curated pool of talented developers to the collaborative platform and cost-effective pricing structure, Fiverr empowers businesses to translate their app ideas into successful realities. How data-driven approach helps software development process and its features
Tumblr media
There are times when your instinct isn't always right, even if you feel sure about something. Even strong suspicions can be wrong and things can happen either way, so if you trust casually, you may make mistakes. It is very important to replace your unsure gut feeling with real information when making decisions, particularly in app development.
In addition to creating top quality applications, data-driven app development makes apps easier to use and more valuable. Here's how data-driven application development can be successful. From ideation to post-launch, data-driven app development involves evaluating and utilizing information. As a result of leveraging customer feedback and behaviour data, developers can make informed choices and continuously improve their apps, resulting in a more enjoyable and effective user experience.
What's a data-driven approach? In a data-driven approach, instead of assuming, you make decisions based on real-time details, truths, and metrics. Locating patterns, references, and concepts can lead to a productive decision.
Basically, data-driven methods without bias or partiality. By doing so, you can ensure that your business plans and decisions are based on accurate extracted data.
In evaluating customer feedback, data-driven decisions can include identifying the most and least preferred products or recognizing trends among consumer responses. Decisions based on data are called data driven decisions.
What role can data-driven approach play in app development?
A data-driven approach to app development enables developers to create and improve apps based on users' preferences and dislikes. Developers use real data and feedback throughout the development process rather than guessing or forecasting what users want.
By doing so, the app can improve user experience and increase retention rates. Data-driven approaches can be used in app development in the following ways:
Understand the needs of your users
You can begin by gathering user feedback through different methods such as market research, interviews, and surveys. After collecting data, developers can offer solutions in the form of features, UI-UX designs, and functionalities.
A/B testing should be done
Test different versions of apps and finalize the best version based on users' behavior patterns after launching and testing them.
Performance & Analytics for Users
Analyze how users interact with the app, such as usage patterns, side preferences, demographics, and feature engagement. You should also examine the app performance, such as crash rates, user retention, and load times, to improve it.
The app should be developed
After gathering the user feedback from the perspective of the users and developing the app, create the app by keeping the user feedback in mind. Add new features that users want and improve where necessary.
Adding a touch of personalization
Personalize the user experience based on feedback collected from them.
Some Benefits of Data-driven Decisions
Data-driven development decisions have numerous benefits in app development. By using data, developers can redesign their apps better, create solutions that make users happier, boost businesses, and make their work more efficient.
The following are some other benefits:
By applying data-driven techniques and decisions, you can create app solutions that adapt to user behavior and improve their experience.
By using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), app developers can identify problems and address them quickly. As a result, apps can respond faster, crash less, and be more reliable and robust.
The most engaging features can be identified by analyzing the data and identifying what features users would adore based on their demand and engagement. As a result, developers are able to create features that users will appreciate, which will lead to increased retention rates.
By analyzing data, you can boost your marketing efforts. It is possible to promote your app effectively without burning money if you consider what your customers like.
Saves money on operations: Data can help you identify costly inefficiencies in your operations. You can streamline your app development processes and work more efficiently by recognizing and locating finances.
To sum up
Using a data-driven approach in app development does not mean disregarding instincts or opinions. To create seamless and hustle-free apps, you need to apply data with common sense and experiences.
The whole organization benefits when all employees make decisions based on data. The best way to ensure informed decision-making, improved user experience, and streamlined app development is to prioritize a data-driven approach.
A small investment now will lead to big rewards later, resulting in more successful and adaptable apps.

modern!ellie dating app au. for a little monthly au challenge i've tasked myself with. a most awkward first date. fluff. 2.1k words.
Tumblr media
you matched with ellie! your eyes widen at the pop-up on your screen. could that be real? some sick, twisted glitch on the app’s end? ellie is—by no exaggeration—the cutest person you've seen on this godforsaken app since you downloaded it. sure, that’s not exactly a bragging right, but it’s true. she stands out like a diamond in a sea of grit and mediocre matchmaking.
so what do you do? of course, you don’t send a message. it’s not like there’s other options, that’s not the lesbian way.
the rest of the day wanes, and your mind drifts to other matters. only occasionally do your thoughts flicker back to ellie’s profile, just sitting there in waiting—her silly question responses, the obligatory guitar photo, how her sage-green eyes must appear even brighter, prettier in person. oh, that’s no good. you need to stifle your expectations. calm down, you remind yourself. it’s just an app. just a pretty girl on an app. only later, when you slither into bed clad in your coziest socks under dimmed lights, you’re struck with the unforeseen.  your phone buzzes, and damn near flies out of your hand when you see the culprit notification. Ellie: Hey :)
oh god oh god oh god. it’s 11 pm. too early for a booty call. or is it? hell, would you even say no to one? not with her, hell no. your fingers tremble as you mull over the best response to send back—something to capture the attention of this hot girl who defied all odds and sent the first message. You: Hi :) great. just perfect. now you look like an idiot. you huff to yourself, running a clammy palm over your face, immediately swiping to another app in a desperate bid to forget that interaction exists. maybe 5 minutes pass. Ellie: What’s up tonight? Ellie: Sorry if that’s dry, I’m new to this dating app thing you smile ear-to-ear at the follow-up. it humanizes her—this gorgeous person who’s looking at the same screen as you, right this second. she’s real, and seems to care just as you do about saying the right thing. you don’t want to muck this up, already putting too much weight into this handful of words. You: Not much, just reading before bed. You? You: And that’s okay, you’re doing fine :) maybe 30 seconds pass this time. Ellie: Oh good Ellie: And just scrolling on my phone. I swear I’m usually more exciting lol Ellie: What are u reading? You: it’s this weird sci-fi fantasy thing. like space politics and robot humanoid thingies lol You: not sure if that makes sense Ellie: No it does! That sounds sick actually
Ellie: I love sci-fi, give me weird and spacey anyday you grin, already kicking your feet a little under the blanket. she gets it. she sees you. You: real!! so you do read it too? or are you trying to impress me? lol You: either is fine you tack on the quip at the end, worried you sounded hard-to-get. you don’t want to seem uninterested at all. you pull the blanket up over your mouth, as if shrouding yourself from the anticipation. Ellie: No I do Ellie: But i’d say i’m also trying to impress you a little. Is that a crime 🤨 now you’re really giggling, your embarrassingly fluttery fingers trying to type faster than your racing thoughts can keep up.
You: not at all. it’s working 🤭 Ellie: Good :) wanna get coffee sometime? We can exchange weird spacey sci-fi books You: I’d like that :) —---------------------- saturday at 1. saturday at 1 at northrise cafe.
the plan becomes etched into your brain. you’re on edge, unsure how to approach this new development. coffee is casual, right? you’re caught wondering if your giddiness suggests that you’re incapable of being casual about anything at all. let alone this cutie in your messages.
you’re on your laptop, browsing, trying to check off the last few tasks of the day when a new ping zaps through your synapses. instinctively, you reach for your phone.
@/els.williams liked your photo.
on instagram? you hadn’t even exchanged instagrams yet. what a little sleuth ellie is.
you don’t say anything—just pleased at her curiosity. you toss a like back, letting ellie know she hadn’t been slick.
you rake your profile, for a brief panic over the viewability of your posts. but you’re relieved when ellie plays it off, naturally, by spamming a few more of your posts in retaliation, leaning into the bit. she must not hate it.
you follow suit, liking her few posts in return. they’re pretty vague, just a few photo dumps of someone trying not to look too online. almost none of her face; only piquing your curiosity more. this starts a little back-and-forth rhythm building between you.
maybe-just maybe-she is just as eager as you.
—------------
you stare at the locked doors of northrise cafe at 12:51 p.m on what’s turned out to be a balmy saturday afternoon.
closed at 12? what the fuck? that place’ll be out of business by summer with hours like that.
your fingers scramble across the screen, firing off a message before you both end up awkwardly standing here, side by side, locked out and confused like morons who didn’t triple check the business hours. You: um change of plan You: the cafe is closed. wtf no answer. your foot taps the pavement and you look around. why isn’t she answering? your eyes stay glued to the screen. hoping, waiting, praying that the message bubbles appear. all hope seems lost at 12:57 pm. “uh. hi?” your internal panic is interrupted, looking behind you. you weren’t ready for this up close—she’s gorgeous. lips pinkened, cheeks rosey but still full of freckles, and yep, green of her eyes brighter in person. her hair, pulled back in a loose bun with some strands lining her face, sheens in the light, more reddish than brown now. she was wearing an black leather jacket, old, worn, fitting loosely on her. the looseness of the jacket complemented her skinny jeans. she did casual so well. and the way she smiled—something seraphic, inviting, in spite of the awkward situation that had arose.
you try not to trip over your own tongue, stumble over your words. “hello! hi. the cafe is closed. i tried to text you. umm…” you glance between her and the barrier that uprooted your plan. ellie steps closer, scanning the storefront, assessing the situation. her brow lifts slightly in disbelief before she presses her tongue to her bottom lip, thinking.
“i know it’s not ideal… but my place is just two blocks over,” she says, trying to stay lighthearted but careful, considerate. “....i promise i’m not a murderer.”
-------
ellie’s place is... characterized by your average early-20s space, barren in some corners, likely missing a few key essentials, but elevated by a more eccentric, nerdy memorabilia collection. it’s a cozy clutter.
not that you’re focused on that. you’re preoccupied with the fact that you’re in this one-of-a-kind cutie’s space after having only just met face-to-face. is this an absolute nightmare for the safety-conscious? mayhaps. but you trust her word about not being a murderer, willingly entering the potential lion’s den, convinced by a single glance into those soft, round, forest-colored eyes. you’ve settled on her patched-together loveseat, waiting for her return. it feels like every muscle in your body is dedicated to trying to seem casual. do you have any clue if it’s working? definitely not. “ta daa…” ellie rounds the armrest, carrying a plate teeming with whatever cheese, crackers, and olives she could scrounge together from her kitchenette. “it’s no cafe... but, uh, i think i did alright..”
she places a hard seltzer in your hand, catching you slightly off-guard. a questioning look flickers across her face as your fingers wrap around the can—an unspoken ask if you’re okay with this absolutely bastardized smorgasbord of treats.
it’s so funny, you can’t help but titter, peeling open the tab and tasting that first sip. ellie’s shoulders slump in relief as she situates the entree on the coffee table, her free hand reaching for the remote.
“i guess..there’s something special about sharing a charcuterie board and seltzer on the first meeting with a not-murderer,” you say, reaching out to clang your cans together.
she snorts at that, the sound short and unexpected, like she hadn’t meant to laugh but couldn’t stop it. she gently knocks her can against yours, the corner of her mouth twitching up. her knees subconsciously mirror the gesture, brushing against yours on the semi-cramped seat.
there’s a comfortable sliver of silence. maybe you’re both actively deciding which topic is best to redirect the afternoon. your eyes drift to her knickknacks—you start examining them more closely, hoping to jog ellie’s memory, silently nudging her to show off a little.
luckily, she catches on. she swallows the last of her cracker and rises, pointing toward the bookshelf brimming with comics.
”oh, right- i can show you i meant it- the sci-fi nerd, thing..hopefully you find it as cool in person,” she musters up with a sheepish grin, gesturing you over. you follow, a collected smirk on your face to try and reassure her. you did think it was cool, in a dorky way. a dork you’d hope to have the courage to kiss senseless if the opportunity arose for sure.
ellie traces the spines of her collection, introducing her volumes of comic books in a sort of impromptu show-and-tell. the more receptive you are, the more enthusiastic she gets—an excited aura radiating off her as she spouts off details, trivia, favorite arcs. you’re enamored with her nerding out. it’s endearing, disarming. it proves her humanness in a way that makes you fall further, faster.
the shelf is just the beginning, she shows off her trinkets littered all over, giving you a proper feel for her lived space and by proxy- ellie herself.
ellie suddenly looks taken aback. she scratches the back of her neck, slightly embarrassed, like she realized something was missing.
“it’s a bit..quiet? would you mind if i put on some music?”
eventually, ellie nabs a playlist, deciding it’d be nice. without a speaker, the sound quietly emits from her phone, a blend of alt-rock and dusty classics older than either of you. you sway a little in approval. it’s a small thing, but it sweetens the growing ease between you.
Tumblr media
“anyway, don’t let me do all the talking. what are your favorites?” ellie puts the spotlight on you, and you return to the tightly-fit love seat, ellie tucking one leg underneath her and leaning in, freckles as evident as ever- allowing you some room in more ways than one.
you snack on ellie’s make-do cheese board, conversing about your favorite stories, exchanging fan theories and controversial opinions, playfully debating for the hell of it. there are even a few little couch-dances to whatever’s playing. it’s delightfully awkward, it’s low stakes, and you’re growing more comfortable by the second.
time slips away during the warm, lively chatter. you’re only aware that it’s getting to be late when the sun melts into a golden glow that peeks through the window shades.
“would you look at the time?” you announce, stretching out from that extended time curled up, invested in this girl. you shoot ellie the universal look, initiating a regretful, hesitant goodbye. seems neither of you really want it to end- but simultaneously fear being the one acting ‘too much’ or overstepping.
ellie escorts you down to the entrance, hands shoved into her pockets of her skinny jeans, steps dragging at a snails pace.
you hover. glance at her mouth under the dim, flickering entryway light. she does the same—shoulders curled forward, eyes darting. both of you standing there, waiting for the other to act brave just as ellie had with that first dm—the one that led you here. ellie even rocks forward on the balls of her feet, eyes flitting to your lips and down to your shoes, almost having the nerve to go for it.
but, alas, the loserishness wins over.
you lift a small wave, which ellie volleys back to you. finally parting ways, ellie stepping backwards, retreating into her place. a space you already sorely missed, despite only having visited one time. but you’re already, eagerly hoping it’s not the only time you grace the inside of it.
you‘ve hardly turned the street corner when your phone dings.
Ellie: I had a good time. Hope u did too :) Lowkey wish I had kissed you you stop walking, grinning at the screen like a dumbass and biting back a tiny, smitten squeal.
You: next time <3

EARNEST POSTING. while everyone is still working on new year’s resolutions i want to make sure everyone knows about the FREE serial reader app.
Tumblr media
if you are trying to read more classics/public domain works but for whatever reason struggle with incorporating reading into your daily life, or you’re just intimidated by huge books, serial reader is a great tool to make reading more approachable. it works much like dracula daily in that it sends you one excerpt at a time (usually about 10-15 minutes of estimated reading time). awesome for commutes, lunch breaks, quick bedtime story, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s very customizable. you can change fonts, themes, and you can even take notes and highlight. you can also sync with other reading apps like goodreads (no storygraph yet……. we can hope!). the base app is completely free, but there is a one-time optional upgrade fee of $2.99 USD if you want some extra features. this is all developed by one guy, so the money goes to supporting the creator - although i’m sure apple takes their cut 😑.
Tumblr media
there are a ton of works to choose from, currently something like 800+.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can now also add your own .epubs to break up your own books into daily serials! very cool, serial reader!
Tumblr media
this was the best app i added last year so i just want to pass it on. happy reading! :)

It’s not the hypocrisy that bothers me; it’s the stupidity. We’re all shocked — shocked! — that President Trump and his team don’t actually care about protecting classified information or federal record retention laws. But we knew that already. What’s much worse is that top Trump administration officials put our troops in jeopardy by sharing military plans on a commercial messaging app and unwittingly invited a journalist into the chat. That’s dangerous. And it’s just dumb. This is the latest in a string of self-inflicted wounds by the new administration that are squandering America’s strength and threatening our national security. Firing hundreds of federal workers charged with protecting our nation’s nuclear weapons is also dumb. So is shutting down efforts to fight pandemics just as a deadly Ebola outbreak is spreading in Africa. It makes no sense to purge talented generals, diplomats and spies at a time when rivals like China and Russia are trying to expand their global reach. In a dangerous and complex world, it’s not enough to be strong. You must also be smart. As secretary of state during the Obama administration, I argued for smart power, integrating the hard power of our military with the soft power of our diplomacy, development assistance, economic might and cultural influence. None of those tools can do the job alone. Together, they make America a superpower. The Trump approach is dumb power. Instead of a strong America using all our strengths to lead the world and confront our adversaries, Mr. Trump’s America will be increasingly blind and blundering, feeble and friendless.
FINALLY, a major Democratic leader speaks up and trashes Trump's reign of stupidity and cruelty!
And of course, it's a woman: Hillary Clinton, who must be appalled at how easily Trump has dismissed "Signalgate," which was far worse than anything Clinton did with her "emails."
This is a gift 🎁 link, so there is no paywall. Enjoy!

Hi I'm Lauren I'm new to this app, I'm just trying to make some friends. Can i be your friend?
so as a semi-popular blog i tend to get a lot of scam asks, but this is actually a type of scam i've never encountered on tumblr before, so i'm going to make kind of an in-depth post/psa instead of just the usual short "this is a scam" response i usually give.
usually, tumblr scammers tend to follow a few easy signs:
blog less than a week old because they use them for like a week before discarding/being banned and then remaking
fundraiser post for cause that's meant to tug at the heartstrings (cute pet that needs medical treatment, single mother trying to provide for kids, queer teen who got kicked out, etc)
pictures are stolen off facebook or gofundme, oftentimes from an actual, legitimate fundraiser (this is so scummy)
paypal country code does not match with the country they state they're in
spams asks to random blogs telling their backstory and asking for donations or reblogs of their donation post, often with a request to answer privately (so the spamming doesn't show up if you search their url)
those are donation scams, and i get them in my inbox about once every week or two. they're the most common type of scam on tumblr.
THIS asker didn't mention any kind of money, or donations, or backstory. just "can i be your friend". they have no fundraiser post or in fact any original posts at all, and their blog is almost a year old with consistent activity. seems kind of normal at first glance, if a little awkward, but this is actually the beginning to what's referred to as a "pig butchering scam".
pig butchering scams can be either romance-based or friendship-based. they involve an innocuous-seeming interaction developing into a relationship, and once the scammer thinks they have your trust, they start asking for money, using that built trust as the basis. you would lend a friend some money in an emergency if they promise to pay it back quickly if you could, right?
pig butchers are definitely harder to spot than donation scammers, but there are some clear signs if you look closely enough.
the out-of-nowhere nature of the ask was what got me initially suspicious, so i searched her url. this is what that search looks like.
Tumblr media
clearly not a user trying to actually make friends, and instead a spammer. a couple people there have already pointed out this is a pig butchering scam.
a few weeks ago, she was even bolder and doing a more donation-scam approach:
Tumblr media
(hint: she is not going to give it back to you)
@kyra45 even posted about this as far back as september, and apparently the scammer was a blank blog back then:
Tumblr media
if a tumblr search yields little results, you can also google someone's url. a google search led to this post with a user who got into the actual pig butchering part of the scam, developing a relationship before trying for money.
Tumblr media
another, far less obvious tell is that she's following loads of bots, mixed in with normal users she's following. while i'm unsure if this user is a bot herself (i'm leaning toward a mixed use of a bot to send asks and personal replies once she gets a bite), normal users don't just... follow random bot/SEO accounts.
she also has a second, identical account at @pleasantdesttinykkryptonite, the same url with an extra k. possibly a backup in case she gets banned.
john oliver actually did a whole episode on pig butchering scams (already posted by someone in the url search) if you'd like to learn more.

Secret Service Natasha and Presidential R
nothing like listening to the woman you're in love with talk about her husband.(atp i need to just fully develop this) Maybe I'm watching too much Scandal lately.
You didn't want to discuss this topic in the meeting. You didn't even want it to be an option that people considered. Yet here you were, one year away from your final year as president, and you were discussing reelection strategies. Someone had thrown the idea out there - remarriage. It left a bitter taste in your mouth. The senior advisors, donors, and political strategists sat with folders, charts, and polling numbers. Somehow, they'd all chosen to beat around the bush until this very moment.
"If you want to win reelection, Madam President… you’re going to need a husband."
Suggestions had been thrown around. Possible candidates who would make great First Gentlemen. Senators, congressmen, the former governor of a neighboring state, and the former Secretary of Education. All good men, and all not your type. The first gentleman would need to be someone you could trust. Someone you could be sure would do their job, but wouldn’t overstep their boundaries. Someone you could rely on. Someone you didn't want. You were not getting married again. Certainly not for love and certainly not for the country.
You allowed everyone to talk around you until Jennie Alba recommended an app.
“Let me get this straight. You want me to do some presidential version of Tinder to find a husband?”
A few coughs. Nervous glances.
You leaned forward.
“So I can parade him out in front of crowds and kiss him on the cheek like some state-sanctioned Barbie? Smile at the cameras while he whispers something vaguely condescending in my ear to prove that I’m warm? Approachable? Woman enough to lead?”
Someone tried to interject. You held up a finger.
“No. I’m not finished.”
You stood then, voice rising not loud, but commanding. The room went still. You needed to pace.
“You want me to trade my grief in for a photo op. With my husband not even being gone for the entirety of this run. You want me to water down my leadership so the public can sleep better at night knowing there’s a man in the picture, even if it’s all pretend. You want a storybook. A fairytale. The devoted widow turned blushing bride. And why? Because the country is uncomfortable with a woman who leads without needing to be led?”
Now you're pacing.
“I have stared down dictators. Ran a presidential election campaign all while coming home to breastfeed twins. I have buried my husband. I have raised three children while running this nation. And somehow, somehow, that’s not enough. You don’t want a president. You want a pageant.”
You stopped. Looking around at semi-guilty faces.
“You want a man to stand beside me so you can pretend he’s the reason I haven’t fallen apart. So you don’t have to admit that I did this without him. Without anyone.”
Silence.
Then, softer but lethal.
“I will not find a husband to make this country feel better about a woman in charge. I will not sell my life for your polling numbers. And if you think I need a ring to win this election, then you are the problem.”
You grabbed your folder. Stood tall. And left them stunned.

An hour later, you stood by a small table near the window, a framed photo in your hands.
It was him.
Your Andrew. Smiling in a way you only ever got to see. The kind of smile that made hard days easier, the kind that held up the world when yours was falling apart.
You brushed your thumb over the glass. Just once.
The door opened quietly.
Natasha stepped in, eyes scanning the room before settling on you. She didn't approach right away. She never did when you were like that.
“Just came to check in,” Natasha said softly. “Wanted to see if you’re well enough for me to go.”
You don’t turn around immediately.
“I’m fine.” You nodded to yourself. "You can go."
A beat.
“Do people ever ask you to get married?” you asked, still staring at the photo.
Natasha raised an eyebrow. “Can’t say they do.”
“Not for love. I mean for... appearance. For strategy.”
Natasha stepped closer now, careful with her tone. “No one expects that from me.”
You finally turned, the photo still in your hand. “Lucky you.”
Natasha watched you quietly. “Did they bring it up again?”
You laughed under your breath. “They want me to find a husband." You probably shouldn't have that conversation with your Secret Service agent.
"You know you don't need a husband, right? You're doing just fine on your own."
You shrugged.
Natasha tilted her head. "You are. And I'll remind anyone who tries to say otherwise. You are the president, and they should all be honored to serve you. You are enough. Husband or not. Ring or not."
"You should be my spokesperson."
"Only if it pays better," She joked. You cracked a small smile. "You miss him."
"I do," You nodded, holding the frame tighter.
Natasha watched your hands.
"When's the last time you went out?" she asked.
You raised an eyebrow. "Out where?"
"I don't know," Natasha shrugged. "Anywhere. Out."
"I have work. A country to run."
"But when's the last time you've gone out for something other than a rally or a meeting?"
"Well-"
"I'd start there," Natasha nodded. "If you're looking, of course."
"I'm not." You could tell there was a moment Natasha regretted speaking.
"Why not Maragrat Cannon? I mean, she was so miffed that you hadn't called her back." Natasha began. "Even gave you a raving review."
"You weren't supposed to listen to that conversation," You mumbled amusedly. Maragrat Cannon was an FBI chief you'd had a brief fling with months ago. Your first fling since Andrew had died. She had been nice, but it didn't last.
"We don't usually eavesdrop, but we were worried about her tone," Natasha teased. "You don't need her. Or a man."
"Thank you," You replied. "But I'm fine. Truly."
"Are you?"
"Yes."
Natasha nodded once, the kind of nod that meant copy that guard up, posture straight. Back in secret service mode. She took a small step back.
But you weren’t ready to let her go.
“Do you think it’s too soon?” you asked, your voice low.
She turned, surprised by the softness in it.
“For what?” she asked.
“To… move on. To be open. To even think about someone else.”
Natasha studied you. Not the President. Not the strategist. Just you, tired, grieving, holding your late husband’s photo like it still steadied you.
You swallowed. “Andrew just died. Sophia barely looks at me. My approval rating is hanging on by a thread, and I haven’t had a moment to just… be. So maybe this is a ridiculous question, but I just—” You trailed off. “I don’t know who I am if I’m not holding it all together.”
Natasha’s gaze softened.
“I think it’s not about too soon,” she said finally. “I think it’s too heavy. You’ve been carrying everyone’s grief on top of your own. And people forget that you’re not a statue, they forget that your heart’s still breaking too.”
Your lip quivered, just barely. You pressed it together to stop it.
Natasha took a slow step forward. Not too close. Just enough.
“If you’re asking if it’s too soon to feel again, to want peace, to laugh for real…” She shook her head. “No. It’s not.”
You blinked quickly. “Even if Sophia hates me?”
“She doesn’t hate you,” Natasha said it without hesitation. “She’s hurting. And she’s trying to figure out where to put it. Right now, she’s putting it on you because you’re the one person who will still be there after.”
You stared at her.
And Natasha, still in uniform, still technically on duty, gave you a small, honest smile.
“You’re allowed to be human. Even here. Even now.” Natasha watched you for a reaction. If you were any other person, she would have broken professional protocol and begged to go back to her room. She wouldn't have cared about feelings or questions or anything outside of her scope of practice.
But you weren't just any other person.
And Natasha wouldn't break protocol for just anyone.
"Thank you," You breathed, smiling at her.
"You could tell me about him," She offered.
"Oh, no, I shouldn't," You shook your head. "I'm sure you have somewhere to be."
Natasha shrugged, "Not right now."
"Don't you have a family?"
"I don't have much going on." She admitted. "Just waiting on my boss."
You sat down on the edge of the couch, the picture frame still in your lap. The room felt too big, too quiet, too late.
“You know the public story,” you said after a long pause, your fingers tracing the edge of the frame. “The headlines. The photos. The speeches we gave while standing next to each other. The ‘power couple’ fairytale.”
Natasha didn’t interrupt. When you gestured, she moved to sit in the nearby chair, close enough to listen, far enough to respect the space.
“But what they never printed,” you continued, your voice soft and distant, “was how we met in a politics and public policy seminar sophomore year. He was cocky. Smarter than me in ways that irritated me. And when he got up to argue about the ethics of foreign aid, I realized I was either going to strangle him or marry him.”
Natasha smiled faintly.
“We fell in love slowly. But completely.” You looked down at the photo. “I got pregnant with Sophia right after graduation. We were terrified. I thought my life was over. He told me it was just beginning.”
Your voice cracked, but you didn’t stop.
“He believed in me before I believed in myself. Always said I could lead a revolution and be home for bedtime stories. He loved my ambition. Never once made me feel like I had to shrink to keep him comfortable.”
You looked over at Natasha now.
“He wasn’t just my husband. He was my equal. My best friend. My center.”
There was a long beat of silence.
“I miss the way he laughed at his own bad jokes,” you added, more to yourself than to her. “And how he’d read every single draft of my speeches, even when he was tired. He always circled the metaphors in red pen. Said I used too many.”
Natasha let out a small breath of laughter. “That sounds about right.”
You gave her a teary smile.
“I keep waiting for the part where it hurts less,” you admitted.
Natasha’s voice was gentle. “Maybe it doesn’t hurt less. Maybe it just… stops being so loud.”
You nodded slowly.
“I didn’t expect to tell you all of this.”
Natasha shrugged again. “I didn’t expect you to ask me to stay.”
You looked at her, then really looked, and for the first time, you didn’t feel like the President. You felt like a woman sitting in a quiet room, talking about the man she still loved, with someone who saw her.
“Thank you,” you said again, quieter this time.
Natasha leaned back slightly, her posture relaxing, just barely.
“I’m still waiting on my boss,” she reminded you.
“Then you can stay.”

Navigating Deep Space by Starlight
On August 6, 1967, astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell noticed a blip in her radio telescope data. And then another. Eventually, Bell Burnell figured out that these blips, or pulses, were not from people or machines.
Tumblr media
The blips were constant. There was something in space that was pulsing in a regular pattern, and Bell Burnell figured out that it was a pulsar: a rapidly spinning neutron star emitting beams of light. Neutron stars are superdense objects created when a massive star dies. Not only are they dense, but neutron stars can also spin really fast! Every star we observe spins, and due to a property called angular momentum, as a collapsing star gets smaller and denser, it spins faster. It’s like how ice skaters spin faster as they bring their arms closer to their bodies and make the space that they take up smaller.
Tumblr media
The pulses of light coming from these whirling stars are like the beacons spinning at the tops of lighthouses that help sailors safely approach the shore. As the pulsar spins, beams of radio waves (and other types of light) are swept out into the universe with each turn. The light appears and disappears from our view each time the star rotates.
Tumblr media
After decades of studying pulsars, astronomers wondered—could they serve as cosmic beacons to help future space explorers navigate the universe? To see if it could work, scientists needed to do some testing!
First, it was important to gather more data. NASA’s NICER, or Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer, is a telescope that was installed aboard the International Space Station in 2017. Its goal is to find out things about neutron stars like their sizes and densities, using an array of 56 special X-ray concentrators and sensitive detectors to capture and measure pulsars’ light.
Tumblr media
But how can we use these X-ray pulses as navigational tools? Enter SEXTANT, or Station Explorer for X-ray Timing and Navigation Technology. If NICER was your phone, SEXTANT would be like an app on it.
During the first few years of NICER’s observations, SEXTANT created an on-board navigation system using NICER’s pulsar data. It worked by measuring the consistent timing between each pulsar’s pulses to map a set of cosmic beacons.
Tumblr media
When calculating position or location, extremely accurate timekeeping is essential. We usually rely on atomic clocks, which use the predictable fluctuations of atoms to tick away the seconds. These atomic clocks can be located on the ground or in space, like the ones on GPS satellites. However, our GPS system only works on or close to Earth, and onboard atomic clocks can be expensive and heavy. Using pulsar observations instead could give us free and reliable “clocks” for navigation. During its experiment, SEXTANT was able to successfully determine the space station’s orbital position!
Tumblr media
We can calculate distances using the time taken for a signal to travel between two objects to determine a spacecraft’s approximate location relative to those objects. However, we would need to observe more pulsars to pinpoint a more exact location of a spacecraft. As SEXTANT gathered signals from multiple pulsars, it could more accurately derive its position in space.
Tumblr media
So, imagine you are an astronaut on a lengthy journey to the outer solar system. You could use the technology developed by SEXTANT to help plot your course. Since pulsars are reliable and consistent in their spins, you wouldn’t need Wi-Fi or cell service to figure out where you were in relation to your destination. The pulsar-based navigation data could even help you figure out your ETA!
Tumblr media
None of these missions or experiments would be possible without Jocelyn Bell Burnell’s keen eye for an odd spot in her radio data decades ago, which set the stage for the idea to use spinning neutron stars as a celestial GPS. Her contribution to the field of astrophysics laid the groundwork for research benefitting the people of the future, who yearn to sail amongst the stars.

Is AWAY using it's own program or is this just a voluntary list of guidelines for people using programs like DALL-E? How does AWAY address the environmental concerns of how the companies making those AI programs conduct themselves (energy consumption, exploiting impoverished areas for cheap electricity, destruction of the environment to rapidly build and get the components for data centers etc.)? Are members of AWAY encouraged to contact their gov representatives about IP theft by AI apps?
What is AWAY and how does it work?
AWAY does not "use its own program" in the software sense—rather, we're a diverse collective of ~1000 members that each have their own varying workflows and approaches to art. While some members do use AI as one tool among many, most of the people in the server are actually traditional artists who don't use AI at all, yet are still interested in ethical approaches to new technologies.
Our code of ethics is a set of voluntary guidelines that members agree to follow upon joining. These emphasize ethical AI approaches, (preferably open-source models that can run locally), respecting artists who oppose AI by not training styles on their art, and refusing to use AI to undercut other artists or work for corporations that similarly exploit creative labor.
Environmental Impact in Context
It's important to place environmental concerns about AI in the context of our broader extractive, industrialized society, where there are virtually no "clean" solutions:
The water usage figures for AI data centers (200-740 million liters annually) represent roughly 0.00013% of total U.S. water usage. This is a small fraction compared to industrial agriculture or manufacturing—for example, golf course irrigation alone in the U.S. consumes approximately 2.08 billion gallons of water per day, or about 7.87 trillion liters annually. This makes AI's water usage about 0.01% of just golf course irrigation.
Looking into individual usage, the average American consumes about 26.8 kg of beef annually, which takes around 1,608 megajoules (MJ) of energy to produce. Making 10 ChatGPT queries daily for an entire year (3,650 queries) consumes just 38.1 MJ—about 42 times less energy than eating beef. In fact, a single quarter-pound beef patty takes 651 times more energy to produce than a single AI query.
Overall, power usage specific to AI represents just 4% of total data center power consumption, which itself is a small fraction of global energy usage. Current annual energy usage for data centers is roughly 9-15 TWh globally—comparable to producing a relatively small number of vehicles.
The consumer environmentalism narrative around technology often ignores how imperial exploitation pushes environmental costs onto the Global South. The rare earth minerals needed for computing hardware, the cheap labor for manufacturing, and the toxic waste from electronics disposal disproportionately burden developing nations, while the benefits flow largely to wealthy countries.
While this pattern isn't unique to AI, it is fundamental to our global economic structure. The focus on individual consumer choices (like whether or not one should use AI, for art or otherwise,) distracts from the much larger systemic issues of imperialism, extractive capitalism, and global inequality that drive environmental degradation at a massive scale.
They are not going to stop building the data centers, and they weren't going to even if AI never got invented.
Creative Tools and Environmental Impact
In actuality, all creative practices have some sort of environmental impact in an industrialized society:
Digital art software (such as Photoshop, Blender, etc) generally uses 60-300 watts per hour depending on your computer's specifications. This is typically more energy than dozens, if not hundreds, of AI image generations (maybe even thousands if you are using a particularly low-quality one).
Traditional art supplies rely on similar if not worse scales of resource extraction, chemical processing, and global supply chains, all of which come with their own environmental impact.
Paint production requires roughly thirteen gallons of water to manufacture one gallon of paint.
Many oil paints contain toxic heavy metals and solvents, which have the potential to contaminate ground water.
Synthetic brushes are made from petroleum-based plastics that take centuries to decompose.
That being said, the point of this section isn't to deflect criticism of AI by criticizing other art forms. Rather, it's important to recognize that we live in a society where virtually all artistic avenues have environmental costs. Focusing exclusively on the newest technologies while ignoring the environmental costs of pre-existing tools and practices doesn't help to solve any of the issues with our current or future waste.
The largest environmental problems come not from individual creative choices, but rather from industrial-scale systems, such as:
Industrial manufacturing (responsible for roughly 22% of global emissions)
Industrial agriculture (responsible for roughly 24% of global emissions)
Transportation and logistics networks (responsible for roughly 14% of global emissions)
Making changes on an individual scale, while meaningful on a personal level, can't address systemic issues without broader policy changes and overall restructuring of global economic systems.
Intellectual Property Considerations
AWAY doesn't encourage members to contact government representatives about "IP theft" for multiple reasons:
We acknowledge that copyright law overwhelmingly serves corporate interests rather than individual creators
Creating new "learning rights" or "style rights" would further empower large corporations while harming individual artists and fan creators
Many AWAY members live outside the United States, many of which having been directly damaged by the US, and thus understand that intellectual property regimes are often tools of imperial control that benefit wealthy nations
Instead, we emphasize respect for artists who are protective of their work and style. Our guidelines explicitly prohibit imitating the style of artists who have voiced their distaste for AI, working on an opt-in model that encourages traditional artists to give and subsequently revoke permissions if they see fit. This approach is about respect, not legal enforcement. We are not a pro-copyright group.
In Conclusion
AWAY aims to cultivate thoughtful, ethical engagement with new technologies, while also holding respect for creative communities outside of itself. As a collective, we recognize that real environmental solutions require addressing concepts such as imperial exploitation, extractive capitalism, and corporate power—not just focusing on individual consumer choices, which do little to change the current state of the world we live in.
When discussing environmental impacts, it's important to keep perspective on a relative scale, and to avoid ignoring major issues in favor of smaller ones. We promote balanced discussions based in concrete fact, with the belief that they can lead to meaningful solutions, rather than misplaced outrage that ultimately serves to maintain the status quo.
If this resonates with you, please feel free to join our discord. :)
