the familar feeling returns- your stomach dropping at the ideal of walking into the classrooms. you adore knowledge and want to seek more of it but the idea of being around those frightens you. so many rules to follow, the dates you have to memorize, the routes you have to take, and the responsiblities pile onto you. you can’t do things at your own pace when at an insitution. why can’t i sit in the library all day and work on my own pace.  old burned bridges try to restore themselves in front of you. seeing past connections in the same room, a place meant for learning cursed with past memories, and their false desire for a second chance. everyone watching you, eyes on your skin, staring at you, thinking “horrible clothing choice” or “what a tryhard.”  in the library, i could sit in the corner curl up comfortably and read to my hearts content. see what the word has in store for me through books and old research papers. in the library, i could drop a book from the highest shelves, and dust would kiss my nose. in the library, i wouldn’t even need to whisper.  in the library, i’d go on adventures without having to leave. i could find love, knowledge, and the answers to all of my problems. i could shut myself out, and just imagine.  but in the library, maybe another soul like me sits across from me. their fingers caressing the pages of an old book the way they would a face. gently, staring into the soul of the book, reading every beautiful note. their eyes would lift up just for a mere moment to find me nose in a book. in the library, they’d smile at you without you even knowing.  in the library, the comfortable silence would turn into apphrension when picking out dresses from the shop downtown. the way the silk would dance around your skin, and how you wish you were a book. those unknown smiles would be discovered. a spark in the library would seep out into the real world.

If you take Ling's blood sugar crashes seriously from a medical perspective and rule out medications I'm not sure existed yet and major organ failure, my best guess at a diagnosis would be an insulinoma, a usually benign pancreatic tumor that overproduces insulin and messed up your levels. Thus I propose the reason he stopped passing out partway through the story is that Greed went "hey what the fuck is this" and ripped it out.
