Listed: M. Sage
Tumblr media
Colorado musician, artist and educator Matthew Sage produces a unique form of ambient music, one that focuses on personal experience rather than obscure intellectual objectives or new age mysticism. Through both his own sounds and those he curates via his Cached Media imprint his goal is to unearth the beauty within the seemingly mundane. With Paradise Crick, his latest and most fully formed release, he casts his gaze on the great outdoors, envisaging a camping excursion. In his review, Bryon Hayes found that the record was “his most visceral work, as he ornaments his typically ambient palette with an assortment of palpable shapes, colors, and textures.” In addition to making music, Sage also enjoys seeking it out, often from non-traditional sources. For this edition of Listed, he runs down some of the more interesting records that he picked up on recent thrift store diving excursions.
10 recent thrift store finds in no particular order — I hit the flea markets and thrift stores once or twice a month and get weird CDs and cassettes. I like buying stuff that I would otherwise listen to on streaming… or never listen to from these local companies. We have CD players in our vehicles and I listen to CDs a lot driving. Cassettes mainly happen in my office when I am writing or drawing. So… a lot of what I look for is sort of “functional music” that I can do stuff to. I also snag up favorites from bands I love… I found 3 Wilco CDs at one shop last week!
Anyway, here are some recent favs.
Bonnie “Prince” Billy — Master and Everyone
youtube
Found in Longmont at the thrift store with the curated CD selection. Long time BPB fan, and I especially like how subdued this one is. Maybe not my all-time fav Oldham out there, but it’s great and the CD is in great shape.
The New American Orchestra — Blade Runner Soundtrack
youtube
Found at one of the flea markets in Fort Collins. Maybe the one with the lavender? This is an orchestral adaptation of the original Vangelis score, and it is about as smooth jazz as it gets. Incredible sweeping melodies. This version of “Blade Runner Blues” feels like something hiding on “In a Silent Way.” Ambient jazz for sure.
Chet Baker — Let’s Get Lost
youtube
Another one from the Longmont spot. Been obsessed with Chet Baker for a while now in that when I don’t know what I want to listen to, I just throw on any Chet’s greatest hits album and feel content. I love the arrangement on “My Ideal” with the toy piano and Chet’s voice and trumpet.
John Coltrane — The Gentle Side of John Coltrane
youtube
Also from the Longmont spot. I, of course, love wailing Coltrane. But I also think his sweet songs are some of his best. “After the Rain” is especially informing some of the arrangement choices I’ve been making on some new Fuubutsushi songs.
Shanghai Film Symphony Orchestra — An Dun (Calming the Emotions)
youtube
I buy a lot of random CDs like this, and I can’t remember where exactly this one came from. But yeah, foreign/new age/private press, etc. weird CDs… and most of the time they aren’t great… but this one is very good. When I find something like this that I like I google it later. When I did that with this CD, I found it on YouTube and this is my favorite comment about it: “Whenever I play this on a construction site, at first the guys complain. Then later they thank me for playing it. Saying they've never felt better.” My toddler seems to enjoy it in the car… I do too.
Claude Debussy — Images pour Orchestre. Preludes: La Fille aux Cheveaux de Lin
youtube
70 minutes of Debussy from Longmont ARC. Lots of solo piano from Peter Schmalfuss. I like that these recordings feel soft. Sometimes classical piano feels really hard, lots of attack, almost like microscopic. These recordings are more spacious. Chris from Fuubutsushi swears by Ravel, but I am team-Debussy.
Georgia Kelly — Seapeace: Music for Harp
youtube
Can’t remember where but found this in Colorado in a stash of pretty heady new age tapes. Later found out it’s a cult classic. It is a self-released one — the album was later reissued on other formats by new age labels — so I love knowing Ms. Kelly herself released this copy into the world and it has since ended up in my possession. The whole thing is on YouTube!
English Meadow: Environments — Environments 1, 4, 12: Slow Ocean, English Meadow, Intonation
youtube
I have all the Environments titles on LP and have since started collecting cassettes when I see them in the wild. These 3 are specifically my favorite Environments, so finding them all in one go felt like a thrifting triumph. I feel like English Meadow specifically sounds nice on cassette.

Omg, where do you go thrifting? I’m trying to find a place where I am but idk if Goodwill is good or not
i usually check out like goodwill, savers and some local antique shops back home.
but i’m in Colorado visiting my family right now so the town i’m in has a whole little Main Street area that has a bunch of shops and thrift stores. i’m also gonna check out arc (i think that’s what it’s called omg)
goodwill can be hit or miss honestly, but it depends on the area i think. but it’s always worth it to at least check it out because you never know what you might find! 🤭

What do you think of DeltaRune chapter 2?
I don't. I still haven't played Undertale and as such I have not and will not engage with anything Deltarune just yet.
I'm only just now getting around to playing Mother 3, and given how slowly I work through RPGs, Mother 3 will probably take me until next summer to finish. Right now I'm in the middle of Chapter 3 (4?) with Salsa the monkey, and I've been playing it since the end of July.
As another example, I think it took me a good 6-8 months to work my way through Final Fantasy 6. I mostly play RPGs on portables, because that's where it's most convenient for me. It's something I can slip in a pocket to play in the bathroom, or during a commute, or if I'm at a job and on break. I played through most of Final Fantasy 5 during breaks at the thrift store when I lived in Colorado.
But that means that for most RPGs, I play them in 15-20 minute chunks maximum. I actually wonder if that's why I didn't like FF5 or FF6 very much, because breaking them down in to such short bursts like that sometimes made it a little hard to follow their plots. A story arc that was meant to be seen in a single play session could take me up to a week to get through.
I feel bad especially about Undertale, because I was gifted the game the year it came out, when it was first blowing up, on the vow that "I HAD to play it." And then... I was just too busy with other stuff and it fell by the wayside, where it's sat in my Steam library ever since. Now I have friends saying it is impossible to have the fresh, as-intended experience because it's become this big inescapable monolith.
So... I dunno, man. I had this idea of maybe finally trying to play it once I get Mother 3 out of the way, but we'll see. That's a long road away.

I need to go to Goodwill for my Halloween costume, but I'm just like zzzzz. Even though I'll probably be up another hour or two. Too sleepy for public.
Also the Goodwill here is small and I'm like, I miss Arc so much. It's the main thrift store in Colorado and most of the stores are HUGE. The one in FoCo is twice the size of the Goodwill here.
Maybe I'll go to Naperville and shop at the rich people's thrift store.

I am a stretch mark queen still in #onederland! Feeling cute today basking in that. I got these pants and bra at the ARC thrift store for $7 total. I love thrifting, finally got myself some Jasimine /90s swish pants🎉 • I am really trying to move forward. A lot of people might just see bearskin here but theres more than just skin to be seen. My entire life since childhood I hated my body, I hated my skin, I hated my hair. I hated everything. I felt ugly and gross and worthless. And I realized even after losing a hundred pounds that the emotional feeling I was having are negative brain pathways created in childhood, and that is a choice to fire up those pathways or not. I get to choose to appreciate and love my body and not let it cause me anxiety. I get to do so with self loving and self appreciating choices. Weight loss of course has improved my health, pain and mobility, but, its your mental and emotional that also has to go along with it. Spotting patterns, behaviors and belief systems is the beginning of consciousness which is a path to true healing. • My value does not depend on what my body physically looks like or what the scale says. Im already valuable. And so are you. Non-crafting Learning Experience
Last night I was transferring some ham fat from the crock pot to the trash can when it slipped and hit the floor with a huge splat.  Now I had a mess to clean up and wanted to do it as quickly as possible so I grabbed some paper towels and plopped the fatty mess in the trash can.  Then I went searching for something to cut the grease still on the tile.  I usually use Dawn dish soap for such clean-ups but my eyes landed onto my bottle of Greased Lightening spray cleaner.  I sprayed it on the mess and wiped it up with some more paper towels.  I suddenly had a sparkling clean and bright area of kitchen floor tiles.  Much cleaner than my previous mopping jobs had ever revealed.  So today, I mopped the entire kitchen floor by spraying the Greased Lightening on the tiles and scrubbing.  Now the kitchen floor is bright and clean BUT the hallway and bathroom tile now need the same treatment.  I guess no great discovery comes without pain!!!  Tomorrow for round 2.
Back to crafting.  I’ve been wanting some bulky yarn to supplement what I have to teach arm knitting so I checked out the local ARC thrift store - no bulky yarn.  Next stop is a newer recycling shop that specializes in all kinds of art supplies in an attempt to keep these items out of the landfill.  It is called, Who Gives a Scrap (located in Colorado Springs Colorado) and is very well organized and has excellent prices.  I found a little bit of bulky yarn, enough for a couple of cowls, for 75 cents.  Then I checked out the jewelry supply area and found some bead caps that I’d been unable to locate at the local craft shops.  My entire bill was just over $4.00 plus about 40 minutes.  I’m careful not to go there very often because I usually bring home more than I donated which doesn’t help on my limited space problem.
I’ve been working on some bracelets for a friend plus more tassels.  I hope to have some pictures to share before long.

Arc honors hero employees at annual gala
Saturday night, Arc Thrift Stores will celebrate 50 years in Colorado and honor some special employees at its annual gala. The "Born to be me" gala will include a fashion show featuring Denver 7 news anchors and reporters Shannon Ogden, Katie La Salle, Connor Wist, and Nicole Brady.
Denver 7's Nicole Brady spoke to the three Arc employees being honored as this year's heroes. Myles King, Ryan Hawley and Nora Gift have overcome obstacles as adults with intellectual disabilities, to prove they can be outstanding employees. Their mothers tell Denver 7 having a job at Arc has given them a purpose.
"She can come home and share stories about what happened at work with her dad and brother and sister," said Marsha Gift.
Joan Hawley said her son Ryan has so much joy and drive now.
"He never complains about having to go to work," said Hawley.
Tree King said Arc has been a blessing for Myles and the whole family. Myles is one of Arc's Ambassadors, so in addition to working, he attends many community events to promote the mission.
"It's great to be part of this organization, helping others," said Myles.
Arc Thrift Stores employs nearly 300 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Born to be Me fundraiser gala is Saturday, September 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Denver. For tickets or to support Arc, visit https://www.arcthrift.com/borntobeme

Thrift Stores
When I was young and innocent and aspirational, I saw myself as having the thighs of Suzanne Somers and the intellect of Jane Goodall, with all of the virtues of Mother Teresa to garnish the image. As I’ve grown older and the rough cuticles of life have scratched away the sheen on my ideologies, I now admit to having several vices. The first of which is Bing, a delicious carbonated and caffeinated beverage with no high-fructose corn syrup that’s made right here in Denver, Colorado with natural fruit juice and containing only 40 calories per can. No, Bing doesn’t pay me for that endorsement; I’m just a happy addict. I’ve tried several times to quit, but, let’s face it, I don’t really want to. Another of my vices is what I’m going to talk about today: thrift store shopping!!
When I started performing as a burlesque character, my thrift store trips, which had once been an occasional foray with no real purpose, turned into a lifestyle. Thrift stores are sources of delight and costumes for many a performing artist. You can find things that lend authenticity to any stage persona, no matter how far from your “real” self. And let us not forget that, even in our non-performance lives, a good thrift store gives you all the satisfaction of retail therapy without permanently damaging your financial stability. It also gives you the opportunity to disguise consumerism as altruism when you spend money not to support ever-more resource and human exploitation, but to reuse things that are already manufactured and offer employment and funds to vulnerable people. Also, you get to find some really cool stuff. I currently purchase all of my clothing, except some outerwear and my undies, at thrift stores. Sure, there’s a ton of just plain junk, the sundry detritus of a consumer society, but you can definitely find high-quality, one-of-a-kind pieces if you’re willing to take the time and know where to look.
Here’s a few rules to abide by when thrifting
It has to fit…the first time.  If that silk blouse is amaze-balls, but the sleeves are just a smidge too short–you don’t get to buy it. If that wiggle dress loves your boobs, but drowns your hips in a half-yard of excess fabric–it goes back on the rack. Sure, you could pay someone to do alterations, but those will turn your $5.99 thrift-store treasure into a $75 piece that you can’t ever part with because you’ve invested six weeks of disposable income and two trips to the seamstress into it. Maybe you’re a sewing savant with crackerjack dressmaking skills and can do the alteration yourself, but it’ll take you several hours of dedicated work. And after $75 or seven hours of labor, where’s the triumph of a thrifty victory?
Know your prices. Thrift stores offer rock-bottom pricing, but even those prices can be lower. Goodwill and ARC both offer regular half-off days and certain categories of goods are on sale on any particular day. You know you’re really becoming a thrifting when you look at a pair of stunning GAP corduroy pants in perfect condition with an MSRP of $79 and you say to yourself, “Meh, $6.99 is a little pricey. I’ll take my chances on half-off Saturday.” If you happen to have an old lady around, this is a perfect time to trot her out. Seniors get discounts every single day. Have a day date with your mom and make both her and your wallet happy! (Old men get discounts, too, but are rarely as much fun to shop with. They mostly just wait in chairs by the door and get grumpy.)
Be honest. Are you ever really going to wear that satin cocktail dress? Your brother’s never going to get married; just admit it and stop buying rehearsal-dinner dresses. You don’t need a set of 70’s-era ceramic canisters in the shape of mushrooms, no matter how adorable they are. There’s a fine line between thrifting and hoarding. Stay on the right side of it.
Hold out for quality. I’m a sucker for natural fibers like wool, silk, and leather. If something is not made from high-quality materials, I pass it over. I love a bargain, but it’s not a bargain if it’s cheap in both price and quality.
Walk away. Sometimes you peruse a thrift store and find nothing at all. And that’s ok. Don’t let the retail-therapy benefits tempt you into buying something you don’t really need or even want. Pack up your achievement-oriented mindset and come back next week.
Have fun! Thrift stores’ low prices mean that you can take a chance on that thing. Buy the open-back bandage dress and wear it out this weekend. Maybe you’ll find that it’s not your style, but, at $4.99, it cost less than a happy-hour margarita and so you can afford to have a tiny, sartorial adventure and still hand it back to the virtuous cycle of thrifting on Monday. The only caveat here is that you have to actually wear it! No stuffing it in the closet for some special occasion that never comes to pass (see point 3).
Denver has some great thrifting opportunities and they vary widely. It’s important to hit up the stores that have the stuff you want. If you thrift regularly, you’ll find stores that seem to have things that work for you. Others almost never will. I think of this as the “watershed.” You have to find the watershed where the goods that flow into the reservoir meet your needs. There are too many thrift stores on the Front Range for me to review them all, but here are a few that I frequent.
Goodwill on Broadway: This store has one person in its watershed who is my butt-doppelganger. Whoever she is buys GAP corduroys and then donates them to Goodwill so that I can buy them at 90% off retail and have perfectly-tailored pants. This has happened multiple times. Whoever you are, I offer you my thanks. I’ve also found, among other things, a gorgeous silk dress that’s totally wearable and some groovy shoes. I stop in here whenever I’m in the neighborhood.
Goodwill Lakeside: For some reason, this is the place where shoes come to me. I’ve purchased several pairs of performance and daily-wear shoes at this place. I have enormous feet that are hard to fit, so this is quite an anomaly. I’ve also purchased some high-quality stainless-steel cookware here, including a kettle for my boyfriend to make popcorn in, which delighted him endlessly. Also, silk blouses seem to appear here at regular intervals.
ARC on Iliff  For the past two years, I’ve wandered around this store in a stupor after intense cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. After draining out my emotions, pawing through racks of stuff I don’t need, but could maybe find delightful is soothing and restorative. This is when and where I’ve found a couple of genuine vintage dress-and-jacket sets, which is a style I really like. It’s taken me years of therapy to be able to make a definitive statement about what brings me pleasure and there it is. It’s small, but still significant. I accept your applause.
The Unicorn
Peak Thrift is a non-chain (which I always admire) serving the same market as the larger Goodwill and ARC stores. I have a special pursuit, a white whale, that I am continually searching for in thrift store: a curved, slotted spatula. I love this kitchen utensil and have never seen it in store or found it in any of my extensive online searches. It only comes to me through thrift stores. I have found not one, but TWO, of these unicorns at Peak Thrift. Beat that, Goodwill!
This has been an abbreviated list of both my vices and the thrifting possibilities in Denver. If you attend one of my performances, you’ll likely see more of both of these things. In the meantime, keep an eye out for me. I’m the person in line for the dressing room with way more than three items. Sorry, not sorry.

Pena Dismemberment Rite 35mm slide I found this odd little...oddity at an ARC thrift store here in Denver. It's of former Mayor Frederico Pena suffering some horrendous "rite" wherein a local politician dismembers the incoming mayor's dominant arm. I'm still getting used to the strange habits of Colorado.
