Biscuits and Band-Aids
My second attempt at #irrelief which has been collated by the lovely @gumnut-logic.
This fic is for @eos-in-orbit who wanted something with AceAro John.
xoxoxox
John waved goodbye and watched as the airlock began to iris closed.
A hurried “Same time next week, Spaceman?” reached his ears as the door sealed shut.
Smiling, he activated his comms.  “Of course, it’s 5-2 to me.  Gotta give you a chance to catch up.    Fly safe Ridley.”
“Always do, Spaceman” came back the response.
John flicked off the ‘do not disturb’ setting and made his way back to the comm sphere.  The weekly match of handball was turning in to something of a highlight for him.  He wouldn’t describe his existence in space as lonely but it was nice to see someone who wasn’t a hologram every so often. It also added some variety to his fitness regime.
 Speaking of holograms.
A familiar figure was lurking in the comm sphere. Arms folded.  Grin plastered over his face causing the dimples to appear as deep shadows within the projection.
John barely gave the figure a second glance.  Work came first.  Eos would have alerted him to any major emergencies brewing across the globe but he still liked to check in on the world.
 “Eos, update please?”
“There is a tropical cyclone system forming near the Bahamas but there is an 87% probability it will dissipate before making landfall.  I am also detecting enhanced tectonic activity around Japan; I have placed an amber watch on the region.”
“Thank you, Eos.  Please let me know if the situation changes.”
 “Of course John.”
The hologram was now quivering with impatience.  John could tell from the way the figure was swaying rhythmically that Scott had started tapping his foot.  He decided to make Scott sweat it out for a bit.  He studiously ignored the figure and made a very thorough check of the Japan data before turning to acknowledge his sibling.
“Yes, Scott?  What can I do for you?”  He arched an eyebrow and folded his arms in mirror form of his sibling.
“Just checking in, y’know.  Can’t a bro have a friendly chat?”
“Not often, no.  What do you want?”  John went back to checking data while keeping half an eye on the Scott.  The brunette seemed to be doing a good impression of a Cheshire cat.
“So.  You and Ridley.  She seems nice.”
“She is.  Her handball technique is coming along well.  Sometimes she is a bit erratic but it keeps our games interesting. Oh, can you add biscuits to the next supply run?
Scott looked momentarily thrown by the change of topic. “Biscuits?”
“Yes.  English ones. Preferably chocolate Hobnobs.  Ask Penny if you have trouble sourcing them.” He sighed, sensing that Scott wasn’t likely to comply without further details.  “Ridley likes them but her supply on Global One ran out a month ago and the GDF aren’t exactly one for sending care packages.”
The grin turned into a definite smirk.
“Chocolate biscuits.  Cute, John. Real cute.  You sure know the way to a girl’s heart.”
 “She’s a friend, Scott.”
“A friend who just happens to make sure that she is always free every Thursday for some good, heathy exercise.  You sure you don’t want to me add some pharmacy supplies in that care package?  You and Ridley need to play safe up there”
“Handball is hardly a dangerous pastime.  But now you come to mention it I’m running low on band-aids.  Only this time please can I have something a little more grown up.”
“You mean you didn’t approve of the Disney princesses Gordon chose last time?  You know the kids ones stick the best.”  Scott received a scowl in return.  “Stars and planets?”  A slight nod but the scowl remained.  “Are you honestly saying that you and Ridley really just meet for handball?”
John turned and gave the hologram his full attention. The intensity of the redhead’s glare would have had Scott running for cover if there wasn’t 22,000 miles of space safely separating them.
“Just because you view everything with a pulse as potential conquest doesn’t mean I do.  She is a friend.  I don’t look at her in that way.  I don’t look at anyone that way.  Now I’ll thank you to butt out of my personal life.”
With an annoyed flick at the holo-controls John sent the image of Scott flickering out of existence.  A firm signal that the conversation was over.
It wasn’t often that John got angry but Scott could sense he had touched on something raw and deeply personal.  Scott had been a bit of a player before life got so busy but it wasn’t often this got thrown back at him in such an accusatory manner.  Being cut off just cemented the fact that his teasing had crossed a line.
As teenagers he had assumed John’s lack of girlfriends meant he was gay.  Later he put the lack of anyone significant in his sibling’s life down to John being shy. Now, as he thought back, John hadn’t ever shown an interest in anyone.  No examples of unrequited love.  No moments where John had displayed feelings of lust or fawned over film stars.  He would make friends under the right circumstances but never showed an interest in taking things further.
 Realisation dawned.
It was three days before Scott dared to contact his space-sibling again for anything other than missions.  The atmosphere between them had been frosty and Scott sensed that John wouldn’t welcome any intrusions, even if it was in order to apologise.
He stacked the last of the packages into the space elevator and activated the comms.
“Supplies are all packed Thunderbird Five.  Haul them up.”
“FAB.”  The response was still curt and clipped.
Scott watched as the space elevator made its journey skywards, up towards the brother he now understood a little better.  He just hoped his apology would be well received. Once the elevator was safely on its way he turned and headed up to his room.  If John should call he wanted to make sure he was able to answer uninterrupted.
He hoped John would call.  He hated there to be tension between them.
Just a few short minutes later his wrist comm bleeped.
 John.
He steeled himself and opened the line.  He wasn’t sure how this would go and mentally prepared himself in case he had misjudged things further.
 “Hi Spaceman.  Are we good?”
A subtle nod.  “Yeah, we’re good.”
Scott let out the breath he had barely realised he was holding.
“Look, I’m really sorry about teasing you.  About Ridley”
“I know.  Most people don’t ‘get’ people like me.  Why should you be any different?”
“Because I’m your brother.  I should know better.  I should have realised.”
“Hey it’s not like I parade it around for the world to see.  I’ve never had the right outfit before.  By the way, thanks for the pyjamas.”
For perched on top off all the regular supplies, in a box stuffed with biscuits and band-aids, had been the present that made him feel closer to Scott than he had for a long time.  The sign that, despite the physical distance between them, Scott had finally reached a level of understanding.
Midnight blue and speckled with a thousand galaxies the pyjamas proclaimed what John had known his whole life but Scott was only just realising.  As ace as space.

being a queer person attending a lgbtq+ education space is like:
-looks out across a sea of cishet people attending your school’s lgbtq+ club since its meant to encourage learning and acceptance or whatever. you remembering that they’re trying to be good allies is the only thing preventing you from lunging across the room and tearing their throats out with your teeth when they ask about the definition for transition for the eighth time. at least they don’t say “so she uses they/them pronouns?” like that one person in your history class did.
-there are two teachers leading the club. one of them has queer vibes but you can’t get a good read and is simultaneously both very knowledgeable and entirely off the mark. the other is a tired bi english teacher who starts looking like she’s regretting her every life choice around the fifteen minute mark, which you feel in your soul.
-someone asks if they/them pronouns are the default for nonbinary people. you cringe. you already know what’s coming. the teacher says that they/them is a commonly used gender neutral pronoun for nonbinary people and others. the people around you interpret that as a yes. you are a nonbinary person who mostly uses she/her pronouns. you want to scream.
-seeing asexual on the slides and feeling elated. not seeing aromantic and feeling very nervous all of a sudden. it might be okay though. hopefully.
-someone asks what cisgender is. you consider putting your head through the wall. it is your lunch period so you just take a very aggressive bite of your bagel instead. the cishet girl who is whether an incredibly good ally or a very closeted queer person sitting next to you is experiencing a similar emotional crisis. you appreciate her so much.
-the gay people in the room are obvious. this is because they start fidgeting and looking whether annoyed, worried, and/or resigned pretty early on. a girl you worked tech on the play with raises her hand and you relax at the sight. you know immediately that she’s going to reply to the stupid question for you. she has your heart and soul but to be fair she has ever since she laughed at your terrible puns. you would kill god for her (platonically)
-you know too much about being queer but have social anxiety. you are not willing to speak up much but whenever you do people look at you like they can’t decide if you’re definitely gay or definitely misguided. it’s the former, which you know because you’re explaining the difference between being trans and transitioning. you make eye contact with a person you’re 98% sure is also queer across the room and find yourselves nodding at each other solemnly. you have class together next period. you never mention that you both attended the club out loud but you Know.
-you take a nonbinary pin and say its for your friend who collects them since you’re so far back in the closet that mothballs have started clinging to your clothes and your cishet friend is right next to you cheerfully taking an allyship pin. you meet the teacher’s gaze. she knows the truth. you know the truth. neither of you say anything. the other teacher asks worriedly if you got a pin because she knows damn well you’re queer because that closet is made of glass and she can’t see yours on you because you already have yours in your pocket. you say yes halfway out the door.
-you are in an entirely different building for your next class and make it there four minutes early. you wish you met more than once a month so people knew anything about queer people. you never want to go back. you are going to visit that bi english teacher’s classroom during a break the next day to try and hint at this. you know nothing will ever change. you are queer and attending monthly lgbtq+ education spaces

February 14th
YAS! Scribbs has her writing mojo back .... temporarily at least. Of course it is around the suckiest holiday of them all though, so have some Tracy’s celebrating (or not)
Thank you @gumnut-logic for the read through and cheerleading despite all the madness :D
John had long since grown used to Eos’ out of the blue questions; Why do humans enjoy sport so much? Why do humans want to explore space? Why does Gordon pull pranks?
Yet, he would never have anticipated the question from her speakers as he drifted through the space station towards the comm sphere. His mind was elsewhere, calculating where Penelope would be up to and how long it would be before she landed on the Island.
“Was Captain O’Bannons visit yesterday part of your Valentine’s celebrations?”
The lump of bagel he had been about to swallow lodged itself in his throat, making him gag and cough as he thumped his chest to clear the unexpected blockage. Swallowing, he looked up to the camera above him, clearing his throat as he raised an eyebrow.
“Saint Valentine's day is today, Eos, the fourteenth.”
“Yes, however, both your schedules did not allow for a celebration today and so I wondered if maybe you were celebrating the day early as a result.”
Pushing himself off, John turned back to the comm sphere, “Ridley and I are just friends Eos. I have told you before that I’m not like my brothers like that.”
It had been a long conversation.
He was aware of her following him, the whine and hum of the motors chasing after him along their rail.
“My research suggests that Valentines day does not simply have to be between romantic partners. There is plenty of merchandise that is aimed towards those that are asexual or aromantic, and even merchandise for children to send to their parents. I do not understand why yourself and Captain O’Bannon could not be each other’s valentines?”
Shaking his head, John caught himself on the comm, “Because we do not celebrate it.”
At least he assumed Ridley didn’t, in all their years of knowing each other she had never brought it up.
“It’s an over commercialised holiday that corporate companies take advantage of to make more money from people that believe there should be only one day a year to profess their undying love to one another.”
The orange of Eos’ lights suggested she had something to say, but he wasn’t going to give her a chance.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I promised Penny that I’d have Gordon up and ready for when she arrived.”

You know what I would really love to see?
Bisexuals, pansexuals, omnisexuals, asexuals, and greysexuals included in dark academia.
And when I say that, I don’t mean “I want to see more gay content and more single people content.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m always up for more gay content and more single people content, but that’s not what I’m talking about here.
I want to see a bisexual girl slowly fall in love with an omisexual boy while they debate each other over the historical evidence for Alexander Hamilton’s possible affair with John Laurens according to the letters left behind. I want them to meet up for black coffee and tea afterwards and end up laughing about their exes using bushels of diverse pronouns for past loves. I want their relationship portrayed as the queer romance it is. Because bi and omni people are queer. And that’s queer.
I want an asexual boy who sits up late in the library because his roommate brought someone home and he wants to finish reading Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. I want another student to notice the title of the book and immediately come over to ask his opinion on whether Sun Tzu would agree with Machiavelli on methods of keeping power. I want the relationship to escalate to a friendship. I want it to escalate into a romantic relationship. I want him to never feel pressured into sex because his partner loves him for his whip-smart mind and humanity, not his body. Because ace folk are queer. And that’s queer.
On a similar subject: I want an aromantic person to slowly become better and better friends with the girl who is their roommate. I want them to admire her witticisms, her strength in the face of adversity, her analysis of Ulysses. I want them to love each other as best friends. I want both of them to be happy with the relationship as it is, with neither worried that the other wants more. I want them to stay up late editing each other’s papers with together without it getting awkward late into the night. I want them to stay best friends even after she gets married to the woman of her dreams, meeting in person and online but also writing letters in heavy black ink with quill pens, because they are dark academics and friends. Because aro people are queer. And that’s queer.
I want to see two pansexuals go on a date to a production of Twelfth Night and ooh and ahh together as the characters jump between gender presentation because oh heck, the leads are all good looking. I want them to joke about whether the actor was hotter as Cesario or Viola on the way home. I want one to get so flustered while listening to their date talk about what turns them on that they ask “can I kiss you?” and swoop in the moment they get permission, leaving the other a little breathless. Because pansexual folk are queer. And that’s queer.
Gay folk? Hecking fantastic. I love y’all. You gays, lesbians, wlw, mlm, all that jazz—y’all are hecking great and I’m glad God made folk who are solely attracted to their own gender because look at you!!!!
(Also, though I don’t know if there are any straight people here: straight folk? You’re great too! We love talking about the queer content here because we rarely get spaces to talk about queer content, but don’t feel like you can’t come along for the ride. There’s no gate on enthusiasm for learning.)
But (as I’m sure everyone agrees) folk who like more than one gender and folk who like none at all are pretty spiffy too. And please remember the awesome attitude of “it’s queer screw you ivory tower you’re wrong and you know it” that runs heavy in the veins of dark academia extends to us too, because I think we sometimes forget that.
Thank u for ur time. Eat a bagel or something. They’re good.

Answer every question that ends or begins with a 1 or a 3 (sly smile)
1. What is you middle name?
Muega-Azekiel. My mom's from the Philippines and apparently it's a tradition to give a son his mother's maiden name.  My parents are also somewhat religious (not like *too* religious. What I mean by that is if I were to say that I was, like bisexual or asexual or even an atheist, they wouldn't pull the "YOURE GOING TO HELL" card.) and my dad wanted me to have the same initials as my brother Shauz. One day in church, the preacher was talking about Ezekiel and my dad was like "Hey, why don't we just change the E to an A?" (Also, a little freebie about me: my initials spell SMAD.)
3. When is your birthday?
It's really easy to remember! It's 2/22/02 (DD/MM/YY).
10. What shoe size are you?
About 10 1/2 US Male
11. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
I own most of the shoes that I've worn growing up, but if you mean the ones that fit me and that I actively wear, 3; a pair of old white tennis shoes, a newer pair of black canvas flats, and a pair of flip flops
12. What was your last dream about?
I couldn't explain it if I tried. My dreams get weirder every day. Sometimes my head's like a goddamn television that's channel surfing. (I vaguely remember a shirtless guy running down a street flailing his arms though??? I've never seen the dude before, I don't think.)
13. What talents do you have?
Self deprecation and over complication (have you read my bio). Though, I'm not really sure. I guess remembering some video game trivia, but not necessarily when I need to.
14. Are you psychic in any way?
Even though I'm a variety trainer, I like to think of myself more of a grass or water type trainer, but I don't mind the occasional Psychic type addition to the team. Gardevoir's a great example.
15. Favorite song?
Fuuuuuck. Why are these so tough??? I can't really think of a specific one, but Rolling Girl feat Hatsune Miku (produced by wowaka) stands out. The lyrics are like one huge "big mood poem".
16. Favorite movie?
Already answered ^_−☆
17. Who would be your ideal partner?
Someone who would understand why I do and don't do some things. I'm not the best at communication or communicating my emotions/what's on my mind. Someone who would share my love for things like video games and other things. But in all honesty, I don't really know.
18. Do you want children?
At this stage in my life, I'm not really sure.
19. Do you want a church wedding?
Maybe??? Again, haven't really thought about it.
21. Have you ever been to the hospital?
Only through visiting people so far.
23. Have you ever met any celebrities?
No, none that I can think of
30. How many pillows do you sleep with?
Two. One really long memory foam one and a comfy Pikachu pillow.
31. What position do you usually sleep in?
Have you ever seen the stereotypical crime scene victim outline? Like that. But I move around a lot, so I sleep on my sides or on my stomach often.
32. How big is your house?
5 bedroom (originally 3; my dad built onto it around the time I was born), two bathroom, single floor. I live in a relatively small town in Tennessee, so houses tend to be a little bigger than I think you would see in cities.
33. What do you typically have for breakfast?
Schools started back up, so I either have a bagel or waffle.
34. Have you ever fired a gun?
Only BB guns. I haven't fired a real gun.
35. Have you ever tried archery?
Yeah, I like it, but I don't have easy access to it since I don't own a bow that's my size.
36. Favorite clean word?
[Why are these so tough?] Like in general or as an insult? I guess zero because it's one that I use commonly. As an insult, walnut's pretty high on the list (cough, @biggest-gaudiest-patronuses , cough).
37. Favorite swear word?
I say "shit" a lot. It can have many different meanings depending on how you use it. Excitement ("Holy shit!"), despair ("shiiiiiit...."), surprise ("Shit!!!"), fecal matter ("shit"), et cetera.
38. What’s the longest you’ve ever gone without sleep?
I know I've spent 24 hours without sleep, but I feel like I've gone longer before...
39. Do you have any scars?
I've got some across my lower back from going through a crawl space too fast at my grandma's. As for any others, it depends on if I've had an extremely bad day recently; once winter starts, I feel like I'll have more and it'll be more frequently (can't wait for long sleeve season).
41. Are you a good liar?
When I want to be, yes. I'm able give some things the status of "near fact" in my head. What I mean by that, is I'm able to say some things as easy as if they were the truth. I also try to remember details in my lie and not go too outlandish.
43. Can you do any other accents other than your own?
Not well. I used to be able to copy Scottish accents somewhat well. I also went through a BBC phase, where I could mimic British accents fairly well, if I do say so myself (probably not though).
51. Are you scared of spiders?
Yes. The thing that scares me though is I'm not able to tell if they're venomous or if they bite. When I was smol, my elementary school nurse had a chart of spiders in the nurse's station and whether or not they were poisonous. They were in such good detail, too. THAT'S the kind of stuff that can scar a child.
53. Favorite foreign food?
I've already answered 52 with General Tso's chicken, but for the sake of variety I'll say something else. I really like lo mein, but I've been trying to get into sushi recently.
61. Do you sing to yourself?
Oh fuck yes. If the song is in a language that I can't speak, expect some passionate mumbling. Even if the song doesn't have lyrics, you can expect some rambling wubs, doots, na's, bops, boops, and da's.
63. Biggest Fear?
I don't really know. I guess dying without my life being meaningful or not having an impact in someone's life (maybe one that could've helped bring them success) is high on the list.
71. What makes you nervous?
Lots of things. I'm not going to make the list too long, though. Being around new people, small talk irl, and messing up big time come to mind. Oh yeah, being new in a place where a lot of people are already used to the swing of things also makes me nervous and can set off my anxiety. I had that problem when I first joined Reddit, when I first joined Tumblr, when I rejoined Tumblr under this URL, when my friend made me get Snapchat, and when I downloaded Discord. However, it may take one, two, or a few people to help get me going; those people I have a tendency to cling to.
73. Do you correct people when they make mistakes?
Sometimes (I assume it means when I'm not blatantly proofreading something for someone). I try not to be a dick about it and I try not to when it isn't needed. Like, if someone uses your instead of you're or its instead of it's, I try to look past it. After all, English might not be their first language and it can just make you look like a douche. And as for correcting facts, I try to make sure that I'm correct before I go accidentally spreading misinformation.
81. Can you roll your Rs?“
No. That's a main reason why I'm taking French I and not Spanish I.83. How fast can you run?
"FAST AS FUCK, BOIIIIIII!!!!" jk. I used to run somewhat fast (faster than most people I know), but only for limited distances. I'm not sure if I still can.
91. Do you like your own name?
Yeah, I would say so. I mean, yeah I like my irl name, but I prefer Zero when I'm on the internet.
93. Do you want a boy a girl for a child?
I'm not really sure. I like to think that I would understand more if I had a son, but I think that having a daughter would rock just as much.
100. Color of your room?
It's like a tan.
Thanks @homestuckorbust !!! It was a lot of fun!

Seder Reflections 2b: from a snowy ace meetup to how I got to hosting my own seder
This piece is the 2nd part of a two-part story continuing from: “Reflections on how I got to hosting my own seder” [ text ]
The 1st part is “Exploring ‘The Women’s Haggadah’” [ text ]
For me, the story of learning my connection to the history of feminist women's seders begins in an unexpected place--events often have consequences far beyond what anyone could anticipate or predict while they are taking place.
About ten and a half years ago, I embarked on what is typically a 2.5 hr highway journey, in a snow storm, to attend an “asexual”[1] meetup. I was living in the prairies at the time, and had only managed to meet 1 other asexual person locally ( via AVEN ). [ Before I moved out there, I had been to a few meetups and had met a few local asexual friends... but the social landscapes differ wildly with the geography. ]
It was a Big Deal meetup-- one where people were coming from various distances because it was “the” meetup-- and there wasn't another one in the time I lived out there. About 25 people showed up. I'm glad I went, but I didn't really click with anyone there on a personal level. Not to mention that I don't do well in groups. But the meetup itself isn't really the point. On the other hand, one of the other people who showed up was actually living in the same city as I was.
She was involved in an LGBTQ+ youth group at the time and she invited me to attend. I did. As it happens, we didn't really end up being friends, partly I imagine because she took off overseas shortly after that. But I did get quite involved in the youth group ( and I certainly wouldn’t have otherwise ), and that has had some long-reaching consequences. Among other things, that was the first space where it was accepted for me to be not a woman and not a man. I didn't really have the “non-binary” language for that yet ( and neither did they ), but the space and the people in it were accepting.
Living in the prairies generally was also interesting for me in the sense of navigating my atheistic, liminal Jewishness. Unlike what I had known up to that point, being ( even a little bit ) Jewish in that context was a major point of difference. I was used to being “less Jewish” than many of the people around me, and suddenly I was a whole lot more Jewish ( even if I wasn't “Jewish enough” to belong with the Hebrew-speaking Jewish student group largely populated by international students from Israel who met regularly to eat bagels ).
One of the people from the LGBTQ+ youth group was a trans guy who knew I was missing some Jewish stuff in my life. His transness is quite relevant because, for whatever reasons, in that city at the time, a large portion of the trans guys were Jewish ( so being trans put him in contact with Jewish folks in ways he wouldn't have been otherwise ). A friend of his ( also trans ) was hosting a feminist queer-and-trans seder. It was a mix of non-Jewish LGBTQ+ folks withe emphasis on the T ( most of whom had never been to a seder ) and a few feminist LGBTQ+ Jewish folks who were used to missing out on seders because family spaces weren't so accepting. And me.
Owing to dietary restrictions of the host and attendees, all the food was vegan with gluten-free options ( including the mazah ball soup! ). That was the first time I had experienced that.
And while it certainly wasn't an all-women seder, it was one of the first spaces I ever occupied which was explicitly for women and trans ( & non-binary ) people ( i.e., for people other than cis men, centred around people other than cis men, inclusive of non-binary people even though we didn't really have the language of  “non-binary” the way we use it today ). That was also the first time I had experienced that. This seder was explicitly and self-consciously continuing in the tradition of the women's seders, continuing by opening up space for trans people who weren't there. [ “The Women’s Haggadah” for instance has parts that are pretty ciscentric. It reads like the women writing it just weren’t thinking of trans women at all. ]
The seder was very welcoming. I still remember my place-card name tag with purple puffy-paint that said “friend #2”. Attending was a positive experience for me. But more than that, it was the first time I saw how a seder could be suited to the people who were actually involved and participating in it. And it was also the first time that eventually holding a seder myself seemed like a possibility.
Several years later, in yet another city, I was talking with someone who had been raised in a traditional Orthodox Jewish family, which was quite alienating for her ( as an atheistic queer, feminist woman ). It happened to be around the time of Passover. She was intrigued by the idea of a feminist seder-- especially the parts that explicitly welcome LGBTQ+ folks. She was also interested in the idea of Humanistic Judaism.
Shortly after Passover, we co-hosted a humanistic, feminist ( vegan ) seder with some of our peers ( who weren't Jewish ), including some of the additional readings with which I was familiar—e.g., one version of Four Daughters [ text ], a version of Miriam's Bowl [ example ], the Orange on the seder plate [ example ]. The only humanist Haggadah I could find at the time was a Unitarian Universalist one, so we used that as the skeleton of our seder. ( I’m not actually all that into Unitarian Univeralism but at least it was a starting point. )
Our seder wasn't kosher for Passover ( especially since that was before the Conservative movement made the decision to allow lentils and soy for Passover for Askenazi [ explanation ] ) and that was okay.
Also, our seder had no men. ( It was mostly women-- cis and trans-- and me. ) That wasn’t entirely by design, but I think that also was central to how the space felt.
Going into that evening, I was a little hesitant because, as the only person who was familiar with even the idea of a feminist seder, I was the “expert” ( even though I didn't feel like one ). Ultimately, it was another positive experience-- and a learning experience with creating cooking. It did, however, feel like a very rough work in progress. But I left with the sense that I wanted to continue the work-in-progress, and more importantly, that I could. Eventually I would host my own seders.
Last year was the first time I hosted a seder at home, observing the Passover in my own space. It was a very small seder with just someone(s) else for me to share it with ( as it was again this year ). As a reference guide, we used the Haggadah that I had grown up with-- a pretty standard Reform Haggadah, and some additional readings. Much like what I was used to with my family.
This year, I explored other, very different Haggadahs and ended up using a particular ( relatively new ) feminist Haggadah as the skeleton of my seder. Eventually, I will assemble a Haggadah entirely of my own ( which will probably be a living compilation ). But this is where I am on my journey now.
It is not lost on my that my induction to the world of feminist seders was by the invitation of a man ( never mind a non-ace man whom I'd only met in the first place because I braved a snow storm to meet a bunch of aces ).
It's not lost on me that that I had to discover of my own connection to the women's seders of the 70s and 80s by myself, instead of this knowledge being passed down to me in the spirit of the seder itself.
And it is not lost on me that I navigate my own seder as an atheistic Jew ( of liminal Jewishness ), sharing the space with someone whose connection to Judaism is very much about relationship with the divine.
This is how I got here. I don’t usually think of my Jewishness as being related to my aceness or non-binary transness, but they are connected. And my journey continues, exploring these connections.
Footnote:
[1] This was long before we were using the term “ace” and when “asexual” was functioning as an umbrella term even more than it is today ( as I've written about before: [ text ] ). It feels misleading to just say “asexual” in a context where I would now say “ace” but the anachronistic retrospective application of “ace” also feels weird.

The Official Actually Real Bio Page of Élyse M. Maisonneuve
Élyse Marie Maisonneuve
-          Born May 17th 1642 as Montréal - Anglo Montreal/Montreal West
  Physical Appearance :
5’ 7.
Of stocky build/pudgy. Same skin colour as her brother
Of Algonquian and European blood.
Her weight has always been much more stable than Étienne's.
Has curly, long, dark-brown hair. Likes to play with different hairdos. Rarely lets it down. Curly hair started appearing towards the end of the 18th century. Her hair seems to be less curly than Étienne's, but it is simply due to it being longer, therefore heavier.
Green-brown eyes; her eyes are usually greener, the brown comes through in darker light.
Has glasses. Needs them to see.
No known tattoos.
Likes to dress up for special occasions, but if not she'll wear comfortable clothes.
Has many ear piercings.
Family Relations
As much as Étienne is her brother, she is not "related" to Jacques and Samuel, but still considers them as family/maybe even brothers.
"Twin" sister of Étienne. While Étienne represents Franco/East Montréal, she is Anglo/West Montréal. Younger twin.
Her relationship with Samuel and Jacques is cordial and polite, some tension with Samuel.
Became closer with Étienne after the 80s; even though he is "older" than her, she was usually the one to look out for him – especially in the 19th and 20th centuries when the anglo population was more well off.
However, was estranged from Étienne for a period between the 60s and 80s when the dynamics between the English and French were at their worst.
Before that she always had respect for Étienne but didn't always see eye to eye with him so it would cause tension. Still made it a point once a week to have lunch with him.
Is now much closer to Étienne and their relationship is better.
Does not resent Toronto as much as Étienne does. Realised that hating Toronto for what happened in the 70's is dumb and instead turned to the province and the political system - the real perpetrators.
More level headed than Étienne.
Historical Stuff. Kinda.
The 70's were harder on her than on Étienne, since a big part of the anglo community and the English commerce left. Left for ruins during the Exodus. It took her a while to bounce back, but she's always been a fighter and instead of having a pity party, she fought to survive.
The late 70’s in MTL were the hip place to be for disco.
Expo 67 put her on the map. The extent of the city’s/mayor’s motivation to get the project to work was amazing.
Has to constantly fight for her "minority".
Special status of a minority within a majority that is a minority in a majority. (Do you understand this? Haha.)
Fighting for the education rights of her "minority" has been a constant battle that hasn't had many victories.
Pre-seventies she was very well off and considered "high" society.
Historically the commercial capital of Canada. Surpassed by Toronto in the 70s.
Important centre of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, education, culture, tourism, gaming, film and world affairs.
HQ of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
One of three places that is home to organisations of the UN.
Named UNESCO City of Design.
In 2017 ranked best city in the world to be a university student.
Way back when was an important trading spot between the Native Communities and the Europeans.
Food Stuff
Big on food. Giant foodie. Likes to try all the unique and various different restaurants of her city.
Will avoid the commercial restaurants, but won't make a fuss of it if she's invited to one/if there's nothing else and she's hungry...
Will always do her best to encourage local chains.
Into local and organic stuff.
Also poutine is divine food.
Discovered bagels first and swears by Fairmount bagels. Sesame is the true way to go.
Can get by with basic cooking, will still order out occasionally.
Agrees that smoked-meat is divine.
Biggest guilty pleasure is a chicken thigh meal, with the creamy coleslaw from St-Hubert (which was founded in 1951, on St-Hubert street) - in her opinion, it is the bestest chicken ever. She and Étienne will usually have that when they eat together.
City Things
The metro is the bane of her existence. There aren't enough stations and enough busses that pass regularly in the western part of the island. It would be nice to have more busses and métros and maybe one day the LRT. Her issues with the métro are different than the ones her brother has.
Does not have a car but has a license and will rent a car when needed. Biking is more of a leisure thing.
The Olympic Stadium isn't as important of a symbol to her, but as much as it's a fiasco to maintain, she "likes it".
Big on the whole urban thing. Urban living spaces are a way of life.
Has a festival for everything.
Loves summer – it’s when she feels most alive.
Personal Stuff
More business oriented.
Open minded, maybe a smidge less than her brother?
Supports local shops.
Borderline hipster.
Very into modern art and cultural aspects of the city.
Doesn't smoke.
Quiet intelligence – likes to let others think she's not up to par with them and then deliver the killing blow in business meetings and deals.
More rational than Étienne. Will think before acting, whereas Étienne is impulsive.
Still wants to please people when she's in a social setting.
Will call people out for their BS.
Charming when needed.
Only gets riled up about hockey when she's at a game and enjoys going to games.
Has been supporting Les Canadiennes since their start as the Montreal Stars.
Likes to visit museums.
Into modern art.
Likes to doodle/sketch.
Really into theatre.
Sexual preferences and relationship things
Asexual
Doesn't understand what her brother finds so appealing in sex.
Prefers having close friends.
Would rather spend her time with friends, having a good time, than pursuing romantic interests.
Doesn't think her life is missing anything because she doesn't have a SO or doesn't have sex.
Job Things
Really enjoys the city meets.
Secretly pleased when Étienne sends her in his place.
Prolly does more commerce/business type work.
Language & Identity
Will be a little shit and pretend not to understand French.
Can speak French very well, but will turn to English when swearing/feeling an emotion.
Will get upset when people don't speak back to her in English/don't understand English.
Will speak in English to piss people off.
She can hold her own in French.
If she's having a bad day, she will be that "I have a right to be served in English" person.

Montréal book nooks you need to know
Reading a book is an excellent remedy for so many things. Escaping the daily grind. Healing the heart. Feeding the imagination. Lucky for bibliophiles, Montréal has a goldmine of little independent bookstores that are great for a gander of hot-off-the-presses, literary classics, graphic novels, comic books and hard-to-find gems. Some sell new, some sell used, but all are worth a browse and then some. Happy hunting.
Go for the graphic novels
Nestled in the hip Mile End, Drawn & Quarterly, the storefront, is the extension of the company of the same name, which evolved from a single-issue magazine to a renowned publisher of the world’s best cartoonists. This kicky store sells awesome graphic novels, comic books, art books and more, plus, it regularly hosts book launches for local authors, literary events and workshops.
Fact and fiction
A fixture of the McGill ghetto since 1975, this beloved book haunt sells secondhand books specializing in literature, philosophy, poetry and other interests. Housed in a 19th-century brick house, The Word is like walking into a bookworm’s overstuffed living room, with a vibe that radiates erudite cool. Find what you’re looking for, and what you weren’t, in stacks piled high all over.
A hub for anglo literature
One of the city’s oldest retail bookstores (it opened in 1966), Argo Bookshop is another tiny little spot crammed with untold treasures. For the anglo reader downtown, it’s a definite go-to, with literature, literary theory and criticism, philosophy, religion, environmentalism, children’s literature and more to choose from. They also have an online catalogue, so you can check for new goodies and titles that are coming soon, plus search their database of books in stock and available for ordering.

Rare antiquarian reads
A literary landmark that’s been around since 1984, S.W. Welch is located in the Mile-End district on St-Viateur Street W. (right near the bagels!).  Another smallish space stacked with good reads, it specializes in used and antiquarian books in a diverse number of fields. Open 7 days a week and into the evening, it’s an ideal spot for burrowing in a book and blotting out the world.

Browse to the beat
At the heart of downtown in an old greystone, Cheap Thrills advertises as a veteran record store, i.e. vinyls and CDs, with leanings toward jazz, avant garde, experimental and blues. But it makes the cut because the less-advertised part is that it also sells used books. Climb the crazy tilting stairs to a world crammed with great titles and groovy tunes.
It starts with a paragraph
Another mainstay of downtown’s literary offerings, Paragraphe is located right on McGill College Avenue, across the street from the McGill University campus. In business since 1981, Paragraphe caters to general interest, stocking over 50,000 titles, of which 10,000 are children’s books. It also features regular literary events and author appearances. Bonus: there’s a Second Cup right next door.

I am woman, hear me read!
While the focus is on women’s literature – whether novels, poetry, comics, essays or children’s books – you can also find feminist, queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersexual, asexual, agender picks and more at this Centre-sud bookstore. But there’s more than just books because L’Euguélionne organizes workshops, launches, reading circles and conferences, plus you can browse magazines, posters, cards and stickers crafted by Montréal artists and grab a cup of tea or java.

A go-to for local authors
This big, bright and cheery neighbourhood nook in the heart of HoMa keeps the flame burning strong for local publications, independent authors and small Québec and Montréal publishers. Rare find alert! La Flèche rouge also stocks a wide range of new and used books, zine fans can get their fill, and kids will find all sorts of cool books to flip through. There’s a sweet little outdoor patio to stretch out on too.
Kickin’ comics
From rebooted Archie to the Avengers and a whole lot in between, this downtown bookstore has a massive comic book selection, plus used books, videos, CDs and cards (Magic The Gathering, hockey and baseball) to choose from. Take your time browsing the shelves and bins; Librairie Astro’s unfussy and unhurried approach creates the perfect ambiance for at-length perusing.

Resuscitating your reads
This gem of a bookstore in Verdun buys and sells books in both French and English, plus for music lovers it’s got an excellent selection of vinyls that span the musical spectrum. Wee ones will also find what they are looking for at Les Bons Débarras because there is a special section devoted to little readers.
Bond over books
From the hottest fiction titles to school and university textbooks, this Montréal West bookstore has been keeping readers coming back for the past 60 years. Bonder Bookstore also carries a wide range of titles for tots and teens, so a trip here can easily be a family affair.

Oodles of architecture
This sleek and airy space shines the spotlight on the theory, history and practice of architecture as well as urban planning, but that’s just some of the carefully-curated selection at the CCA bookstore. Green thumbs can leaf through books on landscape and garden history, photo buffs can zoom in on photography, and if you fawn over fonts, you’ll even find books on typography. Lots of cool coffee table material here!

The bright turquoise trim will catch your eye, but it’s goods on display at this cool NDG bookstore that will draw you in: books of all kinds, records, CDs, DVDs, prints, high-end buttons and select artisanal items.
