I don't go to TWST but I'm loving watching you get into the community. As an outsider, I just wanna ask, how do you come up with character names? Is there any relation to the character you're twisting from?

Aaahhh Jay dear, you know I love this kind of question because diving into this kind of thing is my delight!

And as for the answer...

Regarding Copper and the characters attached to him, each of them is a fairly unimaginative nod to the characters they're twisted from, save for perhaps Old Flynn (twisted from Rufus the cat, I went for the meanings of both names and how similar they were.) As for Copper and the fact he's a double twist, his chosen name wasn't too hard to take from "Penny", (speaking in the Doylist sense,) and his deadname is actually the reference to Captain Barbossa (currently. He might later adjust his form of address in the future in ways that reflect that as well.)

The Wei family is somewhat trickier. I initially had mostly developed just Wei Renqiao, with his uncle Wei Gang and cousin Wei Xinyi as afterthoughts. And since Wei Renqiao is an expy of Shan Yu while also being very much his own person, that set the stage for how I chose to name him.

The family name "Wei" has a variety of different meanings based on the characters it's written with. I went for the characters meaning "dangerous" or "towering", partially as a nod to Shan Yu in Wei Renqiao's character, but also because it fit the way my muse was unfolding and determining that the Wei family are often the fierce protectors and leaders of their people.

Wei Renqiao's name is written with "Ren" for "trust" or "rely on" and Qiao for "artful, skillful, clever". Clearly this is where some deviation from Shan Yu occurs and we see he's his own character. It should also be noted his name at birth was actually Wei Feng, written with "Feng" as "phoenix", which is both a nod back to Shan Yu in a way, as well as an hint at his Signature Spell/Unique Magic. He doesn't care to be called this though.

His uncle's name, Wei Gang, has the characters for "rigid" or "strong", both meant to prove a few things about his character but it was ultimately landing on that name that made me realize he was indeed twisted from The Emperor (I'd been suspicious but not certain up to that point.)

Wei Xinyi is the one that especially delights me as a bit of serendipity! I hadn't intended them to be a Mulan expy, not initially, but I must have been leaning in that direction anyhow because their SS/UM allows them to switch between genders, and I knew that about them first. From there I went hunting for a name and stumbled across "Xinyi", which I've noticed can be written with m. or f. characters. (It's the "Xin" that can be written differently but the "Yi" is the same.) That name jumped out at me when trying to pick something, not necessarily for its meaning so much as the fact I noticed it can be written either way and still largely mean the same thing, and Xinyi themself immediately decided that was their name, so it stuck!

THEN WE GET TO CHRYS AND HIS PARENTS AND BOY OH BOY.

I picked his mother's name, Kallisto, out of a list of possible names. I already had a pre-existing bias towards the name, yeah, though I must say its meaning ("most beautiful") wasn't necessarily the deciding factor or even tied to what she's twisted from. It was only a couple of days ago I even realized I had drawn on aspects of the Muses for her character!

Ilias was a little more deliberate, as one of the meanings of it is "prophet" or "oracle" or "diviner". Again a hint-hint, wink-wink about Ilias's SS/UM, but in this case it's also because a lot of aspects of him I drew from the Fates.

CHRYSANTHOS. OH CHRYSANTHOS. I WAS DOING SOME 5D CHESS WITH HIM.

The Shroud family in canon is twisted from Hades, they've all got characteristics of him, noticeably the hair. And I do love a good surname that's a point towards Hades being the Lord of the Dead.

I've got a running joke that Chrys is my little flower boy. I'll explain some of that in future posts, but his parents chose his name because at one point his hair reminded them of chrysanthemums when he was a baby. And while that may be considered chuckle-worthy, chrysanthemums are funerary flowers in most parts of the world. (Most of America doesn't attribute them as such, but New Orleans actually keeps to this. This has nothing to do with the character, I just find that interesting.) And you know me; the second I saw that was a Greek name based on chrysanthemums, that part of me that goes nuts for the language of flowers latched on and went feral for the layers of symbolism there.

As for that tying to the fact has a lot of character traits from Meg, well...take that as you will.

5: favorite design

assuming this means, like, favorite general character design, it's definitely idia. part of why i immediately chose to take his hand at the start was because i thought his entire design just absolutely slayed. especially since the characters are first presented to you in their dorm uniforms, and that sleek black and neon blue jacket looks so good on him. i do have to give an honorable mention to jamil though because i think he's extremely pretty tbh.

6: favorite name

not to be super predictable but i do think "riddle rosehearts" is just about the cutest name ever. and i like how the name riddle can possibly be a reference to alice liddell, the girl who alice in wonderland was inspired by.

12: a character you’d study with

this is such an interesting question! i feel like deuce would be a great study buddy because of how driven he is despite not necessarily being the brightest.

So he keeps on prodding, keeps on following what remains of his memories and tracing their uneven edges. Some unravel into nonsense and others fade into nothing, and others yet are chopped off mid-sentence, mid-feeling, mid-life. Like different things went at his mind with different intents, Steve thinks, and then laughs out loud because that sounds like the most ridiculous bullshit ever.

Feathers is a oneshot wip which I hope to get it out one day 😁 Steve wants to try something new with Billy, a trust fall of sorts. Can't really say anything else about it because it's...that. I already posted a snippet of it to another ask but here's another:

Steve let go of Billy's shoulders, but he didn't pull his hands far from his skin. Instead he left them hovering over the arms feather light, barely away from the skin. The fingers moved slowly and tenderly lower, just barely touching, past the elbows, just barely brushing the hairs on Billy's arms. As he did this, he leaned his chest closer to Billy's back. Billy's skin rippled following the path of the fingers. His mouth relaxed and he let out a breath. While Steve's hands graced Billy's arms back up towards his shoulders, his lips moved just above the skin of Billy's shoulders, worshipping Billy all the way up towards his neck oh so slow, slow, slow. He pressed a light kiss on the tender skin behind Billy's ear, running the tip of his tongue on Billy's earlobe, from the dangling earring all the way up the curve and stopping at the fabric.

Snowfall is a sequel to Snow on the Beach. It's a glimpse into where Billy and Steve are after a while since that first kiss. Toothrotting fluff all the way, just like the first part 🍯🍯🍯

And then he thought about Billy's laughter. Not the mean and cocky one he let out on the basketball court but the other one. The one that bubbled out from his throat and easily into the air when he felt safe and happy. Steve had heard it for the first time when he had taught Billy new pool tricks in their basement – because playing pool was one of the few things Steve was actually really good at and his parents supported it by buying him a real pool table. Anyway, Billy had known the basics but Steve had given him some pointers and when Billy had cleaned the table for the first time, he'd laughed that laughter. It was like a fucking siren song to Steve. Something had shifted inside Steve at that moment, never to be the same again. Since then, Steve had done all he could to make Billy laugh like that.

Is there a deity you tried worshipping and working with, but it didn't work out?

I had an extremely brief relationship with Selene and Helios. I don't really know what happened honestly. They reached out and we just didn't connect well. I don't think I even gave an offering past the introduction. Kore and Hekate ended up taking Their place relatively quickly when I realized it wasn't working. They were cool with it, especially since it wasn't personal. we agreed to part ways mutually.

Apollon and I have an extremely weird relationship. When Dionysos came, He soon brought Apollon to balance the lessons. Dionysos handled me in my panic and mania, all the anxiety and heart racing problems & fears I had contained. Apollon held me in my depression and my sorrows, when I was uninspired or too empty to leave bed. They were my self-regulation building blocks, and then Apollon had done all He can while Dionysos had more to bring. So, we parted ways after He guided me through my first "official" ritual. after that, the only times I saw Him we're in passing and one time that He aided me in some personal business. we've kept a mutual respect in our time apart, and it seems like that time is nearing an end. I always had a suspicion He'd come back.

You mentioned that there’s a possibility that Kallisto’s obsession could transfer to darling, what would happen if it did? How would Karma react?

To even transfer his obsession to Karma is super difficult in the first place, so many MCs would fail to catch his attention. To gain it, you have to be Horny! MC , Hot-Headed! MC or an MC similar to his personality. Depending on the MC you get the following:

Horny! MC => Kallisto and you would be on sexual terms. This does not carry well, since having sexual relationships outside of Karma could lead to Cheater! MC and lead to a very destructive path. Karma would not fight for you, knowing that your libido will be your downfall - and thus, your punishment. Or should we say, your karma <3.

Hot-Headed! MC => Your relationship with Kallisto, if done right - can turn into a nice friendship. I can see your hot-headedness eventually cooling Kallisto down, since he can tease and bully you to death. Problem is, his tricks can go from evil to straight up nightmarish. But if you're willing to see him become a better person, then you better sit tight and enjoy the ride.

As for Karma's reactions, he'll be way more on the protective side of things. Karma will not give you a chance to progress this relationship, as he hates Kallisto with a passion.

Even if Kallisto has a shred of kindness in his heart (which Karma is very much aware of), he will not let it happen. Because there is 95% chance that Kallisto will never change - which is purely understandable. He has given Kallisto multiple opportunities to change and sad to say, Karma has seen him fail time and time again. He's officially seen as a lost cause.

Hello!! Thank you so much for checking up on me 🤍🩷🤍 I don't think things are looking up any time soon but it will never not surprise me how adaptable human nature is.

I've been in this fandom for years now probably observing content since early 2019/19 and writing stuff since COVID began at first it was for fun but I've genuinely learnt so much and had an amazing time, grown in terms of writing and discovered new interests and made people I consider friends now. But in a weird way I've kind of outgrown? DL is what I've been thinking for a pretty long time, maybe it's a phase and I just don't have any inspiration right now but chances are I won't be writing anything any time soon.

Tumblr is still fun to browse through and I won't disappear, or deactivate maybe I'll even start another account like kallistos book club is what I've been thinking but idk what I'm doing rn. So I'm always so glad so receive comments like this assuring me I haven't just been wasting away, and my work has made people even a little happy or entertained!

24) What kind of sleeper is your OC? Light or heavy? What side do they sleep on? Do they like to sleep over or under the covers?

I'm so sorry this took so long to answer! ; ; I've had a lot going on but I'm happy you sent this and that I finally got to answer it!

Copper Benoit- for most of his life, Copper is a fairly light sleeper (he needed to be, in order to stay safe when he was with Mr. Stone.) He typically sleeps on his left side, and whether or not he sleeps under or over the covers depends on how hot it is at any given time.

Wei Renqiao- a pretty heavy sleeper but he's also relatively easy to wake if he's needed. He usually sleeps on his back, and under the covers.

Wei Xinyi- an extremely heavy sleeper. They roll a lot in their sleep and they sleep under the covers.

Chrysanthos Shroud- Depends. Sometimes he's a light sleeper, sometimes heavy. Tends to either sleep on his right side or his stomach. Either sleeps with very lightweight covers or no covers because he tends to run hot.

Wei Gang- Light sleeper, left side or flat on his back, under the covers.

Ilias Shroud- Semi-heavy sleeper, stomach and left side, under lightweight covers since he runs hot. Finds it difficult to sleep if he can't reach out and put an arm around Kallisto.

Kallisto Shroud- very heavy sleeper. Also prefers to sleep on her left side, covers are dependent on what she feels most comfortable with at any point in time. Sleeps easier if Ilias is nearby and she can feel his warmth.

BONUS!

I wasn't necessarily planning on mentioning them until I made a post about Wei Renqiao's eventual Overblot, but he has three little half-sisters, Jingyi, Yaling and Lian. They tend to sleep together in a little huddle, very deep sleepers. They roll a lot and they steal the covers from each other all the time. (I don't know what, if much, I'll end up doing with them, but they exist!)
