» - standalone or series? I do love both a good standalone and a very long series. It just depends on my mood. But lately I have been finding myself reach for standalones more. I just love getting the full story in one book. No waiting, no cliffhangers, just a nice solid ending. ♡ Thank you to @harperperennial for sending me a copy of the book. Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, a gorgeous retelling of the Trojan War from the perspectives of the many women involved in its causes and consequences—for fans of Madeline Miller. This is the women’s war, just as much as it is the men’s. They have waited long enough for their turn . . . This was never the story of one woman, or two. It was the story of them all . . . In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.  A woman’s epic, powerfully imbued with new life, A Thousand Ships puts the women, girls and goddesses at the center of the Western world’s great tale ever told. Currently Reading: A THOUSAND SHIPS by Natalie Haynes Synopsis: A woman’s epic, powerfully imbued with new life, A Thousand Ships puts the women, girls and goddesses at the center of the Western world’s great tale ever told. . I've officially become one of the biggest fans of mythological retellings. From Circe to Song of Achilles to Ariadne to this one. I really love it when authors add these wonderfully written perspectives that are gutwrenchingly beautiful and unique. . q o t d: What books are on your TBR for Winter? Hello beautiful bookish folk and hope you’re having or have had a good Saturday. Winding down here in the UK 🇬🇧 and I thought I’d do a little #stacksaturday #matchyourdrinkstack or #matchyourmugstack as I saw on the gorgeous @allthegenres page. I’ve read five books from this stack and four are still on my TBR. That might be a shock to some of you as normally it would be the other way round 😂 However, I chose to take it easy today and picked them from my newest bookshelf - hardback favourites and TBR books coming up soon. Still to read are - The Echo Chamber, Luster, Consent and From The Wreck. Read and enjoyed/loved are - Triflers Need Not Apply, The Muse, a Thousand Ships, The Island Of Missing Trees and The Exhibitionist. As always, I’d love to know all your thoughts! Let’s have a chat in the comments. Have a lovely weekend everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstack #redwhiteandbluestack #theechochamber #johnboyne #triflersneednotapply #camillabruce #themuse #jessieburton #luster #ravenleilani #athousandships #nataliehaynes #consent #annabellyon #fromthewreck #janerawson #theislandofmissingtrees #elifshafak #theexhibitionist #charlottemendelson #womensprizelonglist2022 #beautifulhardbacks https://www.instagram.com/p/CcJLER4LlUr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A Thousand Ships is a book I’ve been gleefully anticipating ever since my trusted friends have told me they liked it even better than The Silence Of The Girls (one of my top reads of the year). I’ve been banging on about Girls to anyone who will listen so much in fact that it’s now in my predictive text! So the expectations for Ships were huge and boy, did it deliver!⁣ ⁣ I read this as a buddy read with the amazing @keeperofpages and I’m so glad I did, we had so much to discuss. Natalie Haynes takes the events leading up to and after the Trojan War but tells them from the female characters point of view. We hear from names you might recognise like Cassandra, Hecabe, Helen and Penelope, the latter of whom we hear from in letter form. She is writing to her errant husband Odysseus and patiently waiting his return from his adventures. As the book continues, she becomes slightly less patient and decidedly more irritated! ⁣ ⁣ Penelope’s terse letters and other small pockets of humour that were found throughout the novel were some of my favourite parts. I also loved that we got to hear about some Amazonian warrior women that I had been completely ignorant about and they brought something fresh and unique to the mythological tales. ⁣ ⁣ I’m delighted to report that I loved this just as much as Silence of The Girls and am now a bona fide Greek mythology obsessive! I feel so excited and grateful that amazing stories are coming out which are told from the perspective of strong, interesting women. I’m definitely going to need my next fix soon and I can’t wait to read everything Natalie Haynes has published!⁣ ⁣ Five excellent stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ ⁣ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #favouritebooks #athousandships #nataliehaynes #greekmythology #greekmythologyretelling #thetrojanwar #womensprize #bookreview #fivestarreads #fivestarreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CU3A2YDg5Dj/?utm_medium=tumblr

A Thousand Ships || Stelena AU
Demure, well-mannered… All the things Helen wished she wasn’t, but had to be. There was no happiness in this matrimony, no love, no light, but she couldn’t say no. She couldn’t back away. For all intents and purposes, she was stuck. Stuck because all the man wanted was a pretty face by his side and hers was said to be blessed by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Beauty and Love herself. Helen would gladly give that away to be out of this marriage, out of any other ensnarement that might come her way in Mycenae or anywhere else for that matter. But that wasn’t something she could do, so by her husband’s side she stayed. Even to this day, her face brightened his party, and no one saw the sadness within it. Or they refused to and all she saw her beauty as was not a blessing, but a curse.
Her chocolate eyes watched over the party as she sat beside her king, more a trophy than a wife. She envied all the happy, smiling faces that surrounded them as visitors from other areas walked by. Helen tired of their comments, no one cared much what was behind her façade. They too were more influenced and wanton to beauty and splendor than the heart that lied underneath. She yawned carefully and debated lying, saying she was feeling unwell and going back to her own chambers. Luckily, she only had to be with the King when he wanted her and tonight, well he’d probably fall asleep, drink in hand, sitting right where he was. So Helen was safe. But then she saw his face.
Blinking, Helen watched him carefully. He had yet to come up to them, express congratulations or any of the sort so she hadn’t spoken with him, but she would. There was no man she had ever seen like him, not here, so natural conclusion was he wasn’t from there. And she knew she was right. Her eyes skimmed over his features, his strong brow, his harsh cheekbones… his smile. If he were closer, she could delight on his eyes which were a wonderful hue of green, but those she could not yet see. His lips, however… Helen bit her own and looked away when she thought he was looking up and glancing her way. A queen never got caught… but neither had she held interest in anyone ‘til then. However, as it was only seeing him, she berated herself mentally and made it known to herself that that was lust… And it was no better than what was given unto her. But was it just…? There was something, but she couldn’t say it. She couldn’t even follow it… She shouldn’t even be thinking about it. Yet she was. And she was quiet. At least until another person came up and her eyes returned to the boy… the man who had caught them, whenever they could, as the party went on and she answered guests with a smile and a nod.

Hello everyone and hope you’re all well. I’m afraid this is a slightly lazier than usual #alphaauthorstack Sunday started by the lovely @puellalegit as I’m having a bit of a fibro flare and my body wants to just lie in bed. But hey, this is real life and I always want to be honest with you about how I’m feeling. Life is sadly not always happy, skipping through fields with puppies and roses. Although I wish it was! 🤣 Lucky my bookshelves are arranged alphabetically and it was quite easy for me to snap this pic of some of my H authors. These are all still on my TBR although these are some of my most eagerly anticipated books so I’d love to know your thoughts on them!
