Why do you think Sigyn was never added to the game, I doubt she’d be a love interest but just as a Aesir?

I think her being excluded entirely even without her role as Loki's lover is because of how much the game changed what happens in the myths. Due to Angrboða already taking the role of a main love interest, Sigyn's existence is, as harsh as it sounds, kind of pointless. Now, SMS does play around a ton with how the myths go, so it's not certain they wouldn't make her entirely seperate from her origins, like it was done with Kara for example.

Sigyn also plays a vital part in Loki's story; staying beside him while he's imprisoned for killing Baldr, collecting the venom from a snake placed above Loki until Ragnarök comes. This part of the myths wasn't present, therefore (most likely) Sigyn as a whole was left out.

But more importantly, Angrboða's arc is a play on how we have only one mention of her existing. This real life fact was turned into a prophecy of Angrboða being left behind by Loki once she's done playing her part. GoW is about defining fate and choosing your own path - Angrboða's story (for now) ends with her doing so. Introducing Sigyn as a second wife after this would throw everything out of the window.

Of course, anything can happen. SMS could include Sigyn in the future, in whatever way that would go. We as fans can't be certain what the writers will do.

Sigyn & Loki's love is a very good and underused concept for a story, however GoWR is one of the pieces of media which choose to not adapt it (yet?). It is one of my favorite myths, but I prefer it not existing at all over a butchered interpretation.

Gonna spitball stupid ideas about God of War since I just finished GOW: Ragnorak.

Putting under a readmore so I don’t kill anyone with a potential huge block of words-

Also spoilers, obviously.

So onto the first-

Who will the next game follow?

Ngl I feel like the obvious answer is that it follows Atreus. He’s going on a journey to find other Giants. It makes sense to follow him.

This game feels like the perfect conclusion to Kratos and his story. Him leading the Nine Realms and fixing the harm done to it (or as much as he, Freya and Mimir can). I think it’d do more harm then good to force him into another game.

Could he cameo in a game solely with Atreus? Maybe? I think a cameo of him would always be a bonus. Whether it’s just dialogue or if him and Atreus find a magical way to communicate long distance.

Actually maybe no magical communication, so then the possible reunion would be so much more sweet. And they better reunite.

Where will the next game take place?

In my heart- Egypt. Egypt was the original idea for the 2018 game, and it was eventually swapped to Norse mythology.

Which fun fact- Atreus wasn’t originally Loki! It was conceived halfway through, and honestly props to that guy who suggested it. But if we’d kept with the Egyptian route I think our boy would’ve been just normal boy.

But also the reason why I say Egypt- Egyptian hieroglyphs are one of the three languages on the Mask of Creation. The others being Ancient Greece and Japanese.

Now along with it being the original setting and cast, we’ve also had many artifacts that originate from the Egyptian mythology.

Such as an Ankh in GOW: Ragnorak, and Atreus himself even puts on a helmet that originates from the region (if I am remembering correctly) in 2018.

And along with this, I can see Atreus having a time in the Egyptian Pantheon- most of them do have animal forms that they can also slip into, which would give Atreus more of an in I guess.

Also the concept art have the Egyptian Gods seen as gigantic (other then Thoth in that one comic, though maybe he could also become big). So I think he’d logically head that way eventually.

Who would Atreus be in the Egyptian Pantheon?

Now this is a tricky one. Mostly because it’s one you gotta do carefully.

Atreus being Loki is the twist. And it works solely because he was a new character. Kratos works as Fárbauti because he isn’t super prevalent in the mythology. He’s only mentioned by name.

Thus Atreus should he be also someone in the Egyptian Pantheon (whether outright said or stupidly highly suggested)- he can’t be a big player in the myths. We know the boy now, and forcing him into the role of Set (a similar Chaos being), who is a big player doesn’t work. Because we know both their stories, and we know they don’t fit.

Therefor a suggestion would be to look at deities not super well known in public eye, or even those that don’t have as many mythological stories of them.

My suggestion? Wepwawet. There isn’t too much known of him, but also Atreus could fit him.

Wepwawet is known to have two known weapons- a mace and a bow. He is a wolf deity (a form well associated with boy), and also said to accompany the Pharaohs on hunts. And he is the “opener of ways” which Atreus like his father can bring. Especially if he continues the fight against fate like his father.

But he’s a War God, I hear you say. And I say- so what? Yes, Loki isn’t a war god, but Atreus is also Y’know Atreus. And he was raised by Kratos of all people. I can imagine he could theoretically take up the God of War mantle. Which I’d imagine they’d have to if they want to continue calling the franchise following Atreus, God of War. And he could be a Tyr type and fight for peace.

But he doesn’t have to claim the role of any God or mythological figure tbh. But if they have to make him someone I think Wepwawet would be the best bet at the current moment.

Sigyn?

Not sure what to make the “title” of this section, but this is mostly a small ramble-

I’ve seen some nitpicks or complaints that Sigyn wasn’t seen in Ragnorak and I understand for the most part.

I think Atreus didn’t have enough time in Asgard to get to know too many people. There’s many other Asgardians we never met. But we did meet the big players (or the ones widely known by media).

But with the changed fate shenanigans, this likely prevented Atreus from meeting Sigyn as well.

However I do think we could still meet her.

As we saw from the end, many pieces of Asgard fell into the realms. Who’s to say she also didn’t fall with these pieces and managed to, I don’t know? Wonder off?

It’s possible she’d even possibly travel into another place entirely in trying to escape what was happening. After all, how many of the Asgardians were told of what Odin had done? How many did Sif get to inform about the change in plans before the collapse?

So, if she isn’t in Vanaheim, wasn’t updated, and did fall with the pieces of Asgard, why wouldn’t she run? Asgard fell to the enemies and they could be going after every Aesir God. And who knows? Maybe she managed to get to another area entirely far from the Norse Pantheon.

Could do enemies-to-friends-to-lovers arc with her and Atreus even. And yes, Atreus can have multiple loves in his life. Whether it leads to a polyamorous relationship or just a period of romance (between him and Sigyn or Angrboda idk) I’m not sure of. But I think I’d be fine with either.

And her parents can just be two unnamed Aesir Gods. They could imply her parents to be someone sure, but it also fits to just have them being unnamed similar to Angrboda.

But I for sure feel like they have a chance to still include her.

Edit to this 2/11/24: since posting this I am very much more of the supporter of Atreus and Angrboda. I’m still in that mindset of one of them can very much have different romances because love to me is fluid, and who you’re with can change depending on time and place.

So yeah 🤷 I still think she(Sigyn) can still be included somehow one day as a potential love interest. Or polyam relationship, but that’s just me imagining the impossible (probably won’t see a polyam relationship done good in a loooooong time lol).

But if it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen. But if it did happen I wouldn’t be bothered too much since that’s life. And we know that Atreus and Angrboda end up together in the end, we just don’t know the journey to that point. Which what that journey entails could be anything.

Now who would be the big bad?

If it’s Egypt, it’s Ra.

Now there’s many Gods that are the Pharaohs (such as Osiris, Set, and Horus to name a few), but Ra is the big player. Pharaohs claimed to the be the sons of him, and other gods would often times merge with him.

This could be the combined form of Ra, known as Amun-Ra even. Since in this form he is considered the King of the Gods.

But also if Ra was the big bad, that means the Eye of Ra could be bosses. Since there is a mythos of him sending the Eye of Ra as the form of Sekhmet to destroy the humans who were plotting to rebel against him.

And if Atreus was believed to be a threat why wouldn’t one of Eye of Ra be sent after him? And there’s at least three (Sekhmet, Hathor and Bastet).

Last thing too is that Ra sometimes has a myth attached to him where he is reborn everyday. With the sunrise he’d be born again, and I think that’d be an interesting thing to see play out.

Most the final big bads have been older guys, and while Ra could fit the bill- it’d be interesting to see him at different ages. Imagine an age we could see him at even being the same age as Atreus. Maybe the final fight could be just holding him off until sunset when he’s at his oldest.

But the image of Atreus befriending someone his age and then an hour or so later running into the same guy but ancient is something that digs at my mind in a good way. Imagine the fuckery.

I kind of played with the idea in my head that the Eye of Ra Goddesses came from different pantheons. Since most of them their only parent is Ra (Bastet sometimes has a mother that is Isis), one could potentially play with it. Maybe one of them is from the fallen Greek Pantheon, one from the Japanese (the other languages on the mask), and to tie in more form Norse the final one from that Pantheon.

Hell Sigyn could even be one of them, and it would still work tbh since she’d be a new character. Maybe she’d be Bastet.

But that’s a big maybe idea. Since them being just plain ol Egyptian origins is also fine.

Now this one is a tricky one as well- and I’ve seen mentions of people saying she’s gonna come back. And tbh? I’m not sure. I don’t think she should because then the impact of losing her (twice) wouldn’t be there.

But I feel like there can be a way since by the end of GOW3 Greece had fallen, and the underworld opened to allow those within to travel. Theoretically she along with other members of the family could’ve wondered out and away.

Personally if she came back, I can’t see Athena not snatching her and using her similar to Kratos. Buuuuut maybe she wasn’t caught by Athena?

Tbh I kind of like the idea of her becoming a God in her own right and having beef with Atreus.

Because Kratos ‘replaced’ her and her mother with a new family Y’know. Not sure what God she’d be. I kind of played with her being Sekhmet since Ra “created” his daughter with magic. Hell with that you could even have his two other daughters Hathor and Bast being individuals from other pantheons that he took in and made his daughters.

Could even do the same to Sigyn :0

But that would be a big stretch and not likely at All. Just a little playful AU in my mind tbh.

Honestly, Atreus knew he shouldn’t still be here in Asgard. Father must be worried sick by now, but he was determined to ensure that he could make the most out of manipulating Odin. Though, he wasn’t sure exactly who was manipulating whom. Sitting alone on one of the benches in the hallway, his deft fingers smeared charcoal across one of the pages in his journal, almost not noticing Sigyn’s approach. Almost. The piece of charcoal dropped from his fingertips, clattering to the ground. “Thrúd talked about me? That’s kind of a surprise.”

While Atreus had grown accustomed to people addressing him as Loki, he still was not used to the name being used so casually. Sigyn intrigued him. She didn’t seem to hate him the way the other Aesir seemed to, but he hadn’t actually gotten to speak with her until now. He thought about offering his hand to her to shake, but remembered that wasn’t very customary here. He shut the sketchbook with a sigh, putting on the facade he’d been crafting these past few days. A smile formed on his face at her question, his shape shifting was still the favorite skill he’d acquired since developing his Godhood. “I can! Wanna see?”

Having heard of the new arrival from her friend, Sigyn had to see who this Loki was for herself. She had never thought bad of the Jotunn's despite what others might say about them. Approaching him softly as he sat on one of the benches in the hall by himself, the blonde girl greeted them with a smile. "Hello there. My friend, Thrud, told me all about you. My name is Sigyn. It's a pleasure to meet you, Loki."

Of course curiosity was poking at her like a raven with it's beak. Having heard about his abilities from her friend, Sigyn wanted to know more. She took a seat next to him, rocking her feet back and forth, before finally asking him her burning questions. "Is it true you can do magic? Can you really change into animals?"

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.

From norse mythology I think I like loki x odin the most. Do I think its healthy? No. Is it any way possible for them to have a healthy relationship? They would have to be two different people for that. Ships with loki are usually tragic like loki x sigyn and loki x heimdallr (mainly because they kill eachother). Also I had a crackship hel x persephone which has 3 fanfics on ao3 which good to know someone thought like me. I also like sigyn x freyja but I see it more as them being besties than something romantic

From God of war there isn't much to ship, personally I'm not a big fan of Freya x kratos but it's the most possible ship and I love the friendships atreus has with the people his age (skoldr, thrud and angrboda) like that boy needs some friends his age 😭

From fear and hunger I think I like osaa x daan the most but ships in funger is not what I think about when it comes to that game

Also marvel bruce x loki. They don't have much scenes but it's the potential for me. Loki being scared of the hulk and bruce being scared of loki. Also bruce being constantly being on the edge because of fear transforming into hulk and loki pushing him constantly over the edge (and bruce might be less scared of transformation because loki isn't a mortal)

Most of the times I ship something because of its dynamic not because of Canon something is.

INCOMING WALL OF TEXT RANT. IGNORE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ.

There will never be a moment when I will understand why some people wanted Sigyn to be included in God of War, considering Santa Monica's clear direction with Atreus and Angrboða for future installments. Sigyn was never suggested nor presented as a character throughout the Norse era; Angrboða, on the other hand, has been referenced once since 2018 in Jörmungandr's shrine, implying her inclusion as a character even before the announcement of Ragnarök came out. Jörmungandr's reveal and mentions of Fenrir and Hel (along with Angrboða's mural) within his shrine from 2018 are obvious from the very beginning.

I also don't understand why Santa Monica's exclusion of Sigyn in God of War: Ragnarök is considered inaccurate; the franchise itself is loosely alluded to from various mythological sources, and they were never traditional nor faithful from those same sources and used creative liberties for storytelling purposes. Literally, the entire Greek Saga was never accurately represented to begin with, and for some reason, Sigyn's exclusion in GOW is where you draw the line? But okay, some accurate depictions from said mythological sources can be alright as long they serve the narrative or contribute significantly to the main story; Angrboða as Atreus' love interest is one of them, and there are many instances that emphasize his relationship with Angrboða. Atreus consistently found himself in the presence of adults throughout his childhood, resulting his rapid maturity at a young age from the grim reality that no child shouldn't deserve, particularly within the universe of GOW. Angrboða is the first individual around his age he ever encountered and offers him a safe haven from the grim reality he has to endure, especially after he learnt of his father's prophetic death. Angrboða's childlike nature and the comforting atmosphere of Ironwood allow Atreus to escape from the darker aspects of GOWverse, the sanctuary where he can finally embrace his own age and behave like any carefree child as he should be, which is one of the reasons why Kratos trusted Angrboða in the first place; because of her benevolent nature and companionship with Atreus, that's when Kratos knew that his son would be in good hands under Angrboða's care. I seen a few people argued that Sigyn should have been the one to guide Atreus instead of Angrboða, as Angrboða is supposedly Loki's "mistress" with Sigyn as his true wife in the Norse mythos, and one even claimed that Angrboða essentially "stole" Sigyn's place when really…that's not the case?

As far as we know (from storywise perspective), Atreus has a keen interest in his Giant lineage, not only because it's tied to his identity as Loki but also to his mother as a whole. Faye never had the opportunity to teach Atreus about their heritage due to Odin's hatred towards Giants, she's was also recognized as an sworn enemy as "Laufey The Just" from the Æsir (specifically Thor & Odin), not only she had to conceal her identity from Odin but also to ensure the safety of her own family.

Atreus even thought the entire race of Giants had perished from Odin's genocide campaign...that is until he meets Angrboða, the first Giant he ever encounters, who then guides Atreus through understanding their heritage within the hidden sanctuary away from Odin. She also gave Atreus the necessary tools and purpose to restore the kingdom of Jötunheim and gains a deeper understanding of Loki's identity as part of his coming-of-age story. That's what makes Angrboða so important to Atreus' character arc along with why she's an essential addition for Ragnarök. And if we're going by the material sources from Norse Mythology, Angrboða is only mentioned as Loki's mate rather than his mistress. It's possible that Loki loved Angrboða just like he did with Sigyn, so Atreus being Angrboða's love interest is expected and aligns accurately with the material sources depicted in GOW. And what also gets me are those awful speculations regarding the possibility of Thrúd and Sigyn being the same person, and combining the fact that Dude Bros preferred Atreus with Thrúd due to skin color is just exhausting at this point...and from what I have observed; Sigyn is always depicted as a white girl in most media, which strengthens my hope she never appears in future installments at all. It's obvious that Angrboða will probably appear again in the long run due to her recent development and promising potential in the future. Sigyn's inclusion seems unnecessary, and I hope Santa Monica never considers about writing Angrboða off just to pair Atreus with Sigyn for the sake of it. TL;DR: I think Angrboða is a better match for Atreus rather than Sigyn in GOW. I'm sick and tired with certain fans dismissing Angrboða's importance and deeming her unworthy as Atreus' wife, especially when it comes to her skin color and her erroneous label as Loki's "mistress" solely because Sigyn was Loki's actual wife in Norse Mythology. Anyone who hates Angrboða because of Sigyn are just bitter that their favorite character isn't there to fulfill their Logyn ship with Atreus. Angrboða and Atreus are going to be a thing. Cope and seethe.

I will say one thing I see occasionally floating around in God of War spaces is “Oh Angrboda can’t be Atreus’ real love interest because in the myths Angrboda isn’t Loki’s wife she’s just his mistress” to which I say noooooooooot exactly

See the thing about Angrboda and Sigyn (Loki’s “real” wife) is that we. Don’t know much about them. I’ve seen LOTS of interpretations over the years. But I have seen Angrboda referred to as his “other” wife (Wife of the Giants) or his “mate” rather than wife which might imply that giants don’t get married like we see it but rather take mates? Which is kind of a cool concept but definitely not something we’re gonna see in the games as Gryla has already referred to Angrboda’s parents as being married

Some say that Angrboda was Loki’s “true” love and Sigyn was his wife that he took to better blend with the Aesir. Or his marriage to Sigyn was arranged by Odin (for some reason?) and he snuck off to be with Angrboda whenever he could. I have very rarely seen an interpretation where Loki seems to genuinely love Sigyn and tbh I do not. Enjoy that. 90% of the time in popular culture Loki is depicted as being a huge piece of shit to Sigyn despite how loyal she is to him. Seeing as she willingly put herself in his prison with him SOLELY to make it more bearable. She did not have to do that but she did, and I have trouble believing that she would do it if Loki was terrible to her

Angrboda is, meanwhile, barely EVER actually explored. Even when people say “she was his true love” that’s about all you get. It’s like “then he would go off and hook up with Angrboda and she gave birth to three monster children and then disappeared into the ether” she is a pretty blank slate, not an ENTIRELY blank slate, but there’s a lot you could do there

My point is. “Angrboda can’t be Loki’s real love interest because she’s not his wife” is not an argument that holds water. I still think the most likely scenario is Angrboda and Sigyn will be combined, another interpretation I sometimes see, (maybe Angrboda disguises herself as Sigyn to live with Loki amongst the Aesir? There is never any mention of where Sigyn is when Loki fucks off for months at a time to run around with Angrboda)

If it were me? Poly relationship. Absolutely. Everyone is on board and everyone is happy because this is Loki, it just seems fitting. But I doubt that’ll be the case and honestly I really like Angrboda and Sigyn being the same figure

Even as someone who knows how to handle LTs due to the amount of romance content I consume, with Gow it would make zero sense. Gaming isn't the medium to develop LTs properly. It'd only make female characters look interchangeable&turn them into accessories to a man. Those "progressive" Thrud fans have no idea they're putting her down by insisting she has to get together w/ male lead (who clearly indicated it's Angrboda he likes) to be fulfilled. They're just setting her up to be on the "losing" end of a LT if that is to happen/be reduced to a cliched romantic rival to Angrboda. Also He5md1ll - talk about how a toxic fandom can ruin an overall interesting albeit antagonistic character by making him into a Gary Stu *sighs*

How I would introduce Sigyn into God of War!

She is the only daughter of Freyja, with Baldur and Hoder being her older brothers. Her and Hoder were wanted by Odin, her for her innate sedir abilities, and Hoder for him choosing the side of Vanahiem, not Asgard like his brother. She has the appearance of a early teenager, (not unlike Atreus). Her and Hoder are hidden by Freya. After Odins death, Freya asks Kratos and Mimir to tell them that they are free, (Freya’s spell making it so that all gods of Aesir or Vanir decent could not pass the barrier). Sigyn is the protector of Hoder, being untrusting of Kratos, thinking he is an Aesir who is working for Odin. Until she hears Mimir tell Kratos about her.

Eventually she and Hoder agrees to go with them, hugging Freya and following the group around, learning from Kratos and Freya, eventually going to become the leader of Vanahiem and the Shield-Maidens. When she first meets Atreus and Angrboda, she is at first hesitant to become friends with them, but eventually she realizes that they are good people, even though she sometimes doesn’t understand why they are so obsessed with finding other Jotunar. Her and Hoder are a team, never wanting to separate, especially considering that Sigyn is Hoder’s ‘eyes’.

Some fun facts about her:

She is tall, strangely so.

She looks a lot like her mother, barely any from her father.

She loves any kind of animals, and has a wolf puppy who she adopted during her hiding.

She has two names, Sigyn and Gersemi, (Sigyn being her Aesir name). She is more comfortable with using Sigyn though.
