La Haine was an intense film that I didn’t really look into much before watching so I didn’t quite know what to expect.  I was quite confused by the music choices throughout the film.  Much of it was in English, starting with the reggae in the opening scene and the hip hop snippets throughout the film.  But as it went on, everything started making more sense because the themes of the music and their cultural associations were being mirrored by the events happening even if they were in France.  The use of hip hop was interesting to me because it went beyond the music, we saw Sayid spray painting the back of a police truck, there’s graffiti all over the walls.  It just made sense, because if a riot is the voice of the oppressed then hip hop culture is the heartbeat.  I don’t remember who it was but I heard someone say they MC because their environment refuses to see them and it felt super relevant to the topic of the film.  Especially with the knowledge that France was one of the earliest and largest markets for this music outside of the US.

Everything in the film felt eerily familiar, this being a ‘95 film and yet a lot of the imagery looked exactly like the Black Lives Matter uprisings/riots of recent years.  Which was a bit disheartening to realize, yet made it easier to connect to at the same time.  But even the film style and shots felt really familiar.  They reminded me a lot of Spike Lee’s early work like She’s Gotta Have It and Do The Right Thing.  The focus on people’s faces, the dolly shots, etc.  I noticed also there were a lot of scenes that started with close ups on people’s hands.  Almost as if it’s saying what we do is really important, more important than what we say or think.

Summary: you and girlfriends were laughing and kissing in your dorm until some unsuspecting people walk in.

Warnings: nothing really

You and Uma were dating on back on the isle and were surprised when you guys came to Auradon and were blown away by Audrey. After the three of you became friends, it took a while for you and Uma to confess to Audrey about how you two felt. When you guys finally did you were shocked that Audrey said she liked you guys back. After that the three of you became partners but had to keep it a secret because 1. you didn’t know how ever people would react and 2. Audrey’s family in general.

One day you guys were chilling in your dorm messing around and you forgetting the fact Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay were coming over to hang out. The other four were right outside your door when they heard a loud laughing type of scream. confused they opened the to Audrey and Uma kissing you. Mal cleared her throat causing you and your girlfriends to look up and see all of them standing at the door. 

“what’s going on?”-Carlos

“Um. well...we were just-umm.”-Y/N

Mal was staring Y/N waiting a real answer. She was kinda protective of her/him they were like a sister/brother to her. Y/N sighed and stood up knowing they weren’t gonna lie their way out of this. “Is it ok if I tell them?” She/he ask Audrey and Uma not wanting to make them uncomfortable with the fact that some people are about to find out about their relationship. “Yeah. I mean they were gonna find out eventually.”-Audrey. “Find out what?”-Jay. Y/N takes a deep breath before saying “Me, Audrey and Uma are partners.” “As in?”-Evie. “As in, we’re dating.”-Uma The other four sand there for a bit thinking about what you guys just told them. “Please say something”-Y/N. “Congratulations!”-Evie Everyone looked at Evie weirdly. “What? I’m happy for them.” “I am too but that was just weird.”-Jay. “Yeah we’re all happy for you guys.”-Carlos. “But no doing whatever you guys were just doing in front of us. Got it?”-Mal. “Okay bossy”-Uma. “Movie time!”-Evie, Carlos, and Audrey. This semester I want to work with the idea of couples/romance and how we choose to depict them.  I’m thinking a lot about the “soft launch” tactics people use today.  Finding ways to show everything about a partner but without their face.  Whether that be blocking their face with flowers, plants, hands, phones, etc.  Something about the idea of “no face no case”

I’m getting inspiration generally from the current state of social media, 90s Black romance movies (Spike Lee, anything with Nia Long or Michael Ealy), MIT and Harvard’s private Black student archives, etc.  I hope to work mainly with film but may include some digital techniques after scanning or possibly screen printing.  When I think about the combination of film and screen printing I’m drawing from She’s Gotta Have It and other traditions of street art.

I hope to put together a photo series that helps us explore notions of privacy vs. secrecy and what that means for us in our relationships.  I have a rangefinder that I may use in the exploratory phase while location scouting but for the final product I’m looking forward to working with a medium format camera.  Still considering working outside in nature vs. setting up an indoor studio.
