Hi!! This is a prompt for @dadrunkwriting pulled from my Prompt List! I have actually written this interaction in my Lavellan-origin fic Canines (available for reading through chapter 6 on AO3) so I decided to write it from Fenris' perspective!! It was super fun and an AWESOME exercise!! <3 Thank you for prompting!!!

Dark, loamy earth was soft under Fenris’ bare feet. The rich smell of nature and the haze of early sunlight made the trek from Kirkwall pleasant, even enjoyable. Frankly, he might have been thankful for this trip - if it wasn’t for the reason they’d undertaken it in the first place.

A half-Dalish magelet was awakening in his power, and rather than properly address it, Aurora Hawke’s bleeding heart drove her to the Dalish, where she would beg the leader to take the young abomination-waiting-to-happen under her tutelage. Fenris had warned against it, but once again, he’d been overruled.

Merrill was decidedly thrilled. She led their pack up through winding game trails and goat paths to the Dalish encampment, bopping along with Hawke like a teenager. It was clear that she felt she was doing something good, something righteous that would garner her commendation by the other Dalish. Fenris couldn’t tell if he wanted it to get shoved back into her face or not. Would be a good reality check for the young blood mage. Then again, he didn’t want to hear her winging if it did.

The path opened ahead of the pack, air suddenly smelling heavily of elfroot and campfire. There were old ruins, green with moss, which served as entry points to the Dalish territory. Fenris had seen them before when they had first come to the Sundermount, and knew this was a favourite place the guards used. Sure enough, someone was perched at the top of a small pillar.

The guard hopped down, growling something in Elvhen at Merrill. Fenris and Varric froze, their gaze trained on the newcomer, while Hawke was busy studying Merrill. Who was gaping incredulously at the guard. Her ears were pulled down, a feat Fenris found irritating. She swelled up like an angry songbird and marched to the guard, whose easy demeanor seemed to outrage Merrill further. 

They stood with a carefree grace, ears twitching slightly but steadily pricked, blue eyes glancing between Merrill and the rest of the pack. A shock of dark hair flopped airily in their face. There was a roguish charm to them, completed by their wolfish grin as they turned to lead the pack toward the Dalish encampment.

“I know the way!” Merrill protested, caught off-guard. Fenris nearly had to push her to get her moving again.

“I’m sure you do,” the guard replied, their tone alive with merriment, “But I want to witness Marethari losing her shit.”

Varric, caught by surprise, barked with laughter. Aurora’s shoulders shook. Fenris had to admit, he’d never heard a Dalish speak so Commonly. Merrill fell back to Hawke’s side, whispering anxiously at her. He couldn’t catch what she was saying, too caught in the guard turning on their heel, walking backward, and flashing a sharp grin his way.

“I’m Samahl, from Clan Lavellan. I’m visiting from up North, staying around to help out the clan before I head home.”

A switch flipped in Merrill. She paused, became her normal, sunny self, and advanced on the new elf. They exchanged some words, during which Hawke inserted herself into the conversation - a talent she was grossly adept at - and which ended with both Fenris and Varric being introduced by name. Fenris felt himself grimace reflexively. Strangers made him prickle.

Ahead of the pack, the encampment opened among the rocky outcroppings and the dense underbrush. Faces turned to the group almost in unison, activity stilling in the yellow morning light. At the front, Merrill’s ears did the flattening thing again, and Samahl’s followed opposite - they seemed to prick up in glee. From the biggest aravel crossed a proud, elderly elf woman.

Almost as soon as Merrill had exclaimed “Keeper!”, Marethari breezed past her and addressed Hawke formally, her hands pressed together. This provoked a concerned reaction from both Dalish, during which Fenris witnessed Samahl’s eyes go from clear skies to thunderclouds. Their ears went flat against their skull, but there was a subtle difference between the way that theirs and Merrills moved, which Fenris couldn’t articulate. However, he found it significantly less irritating.

The Keeper drew Hawke away from the group with a gentle hand on her shoulder, casting a pointing glance over her shoulder at her guard. Merrill trailed after them, looking a bit like a lost puppy. Left alone with the new Dalish, Fenris found himself in an anxious stance. Varric, on the other hand, engaged them in happy conversation.

Almost straight away, Merrill was back. She had flushed cheeks and almost burst as she asked Samahl, “So, you’re the Wild Mage?!”

Fenris felt his heart drop. Mage? Impossible. This person had no hallmarks of magic. They carried themself like a rogue, loose and careless. A dagger bounced on their hip. And more, Fenris hadn’t felt the telltale crackle of power around them - a skill honed by years in Tevinter around more mages than he cared to remember. He clenched his fist. He must be getting sloppy.

“Another mage? Splendid,” he growled.

“I’m not a mage,” Samahl replied, locking eyes with him, the conviction in their voice nearly convincing him. Perhaps Merrill was mistaken, and the “wild mage” was actually someone else. It would be just like her to jump to a conclusion without asking any questions. Just as he relaxed into the idea, Samahl gave an irritated sigh. And transformed into a dog.
