may I ask about the mitski curse or is it secret knowledge
*LONG POST INCOMING* It all started in 2016.
I've been a Mitski fan since 2014 when First Love/Late Spring premiered on Stereogum and desperately wanted to see her live. The chance finally came after I moved to New York; I had tickets for her show in February 2016 at The Knitting Factory. But then. A freeze hit the city that weekend, resulting in a pipe in the shitty apartment bursting so I missed the show because I had to wait for the emergency repair guy to come by. Okay, well that's a bummer, I though. I've been waiting for almost two years to see Mitski but surely I'll get another chance. July 2016. I was living in Texas for the summer, a few hours away from Austin, where Mitski had a show scheduled. Perfect! I can drive up to the show! My old, barely functioning truck can handle the drive! It did not. My car broke down two hours outside Austin.
November 2016. Third try to see Mitski in a year is the charm, right? Oh wait, I waited too long to buy a flight to my grandma's for thanksgiving and I had to fly out the day of the Mitski show because every other flight was $500 more expensive.
By 2017 I was starting to get worried. I had tickets to see her April 2017, but I got horrific food poisoning and couldn't get out of bed for three days.
I didn't get another try until late 2018 on the Be The Cowboy tour during her 4 night residency at Brooklyn Steel. Except Mitski's popularity had blown up significantly and I couldn't get tickets when they went on sale the first three shows. BUT THEN a fourth show was added, on a Monday night, and I finally got tickets! Perfect! Until I had a final project for one of my classes scheduled the same night that I could not miss without failing the class, and I desperately tried to find tickets for another night but none were available for under $300.
At that point I was convinced: I was cursed. There were no tour dates I was even able to TRY to make, and then in September 2019 Mitski played Summer Stage (two weeks after I moved from New York) and announced it would indefinitely be her last live show.
October 2021: Mitski releases Working for the Knife and announces a tour. The closest tour date to where I was living was 8 hours away, but I fought for my life for tickets and was determined I would finally break the curse.
I got COVID two days before Mitski's Denver show in March 2022.
BUT WAIT! Mitski was announced as one of the openers for HSLOT's European stadium leg! And my friends and I planned a bar trip to Scotland that lined up with the weekend of Harry's show in Glasgow! Okay, maybe seeing Mitski as an opener at a stadium show isn't ideal, but I was desperate. Except, of course, the stadium entry was a complete mess, and we didn't get into the show until the very end of Mitski's set. I had finally seen her live, but for 8 minutes and at what cost.
I wasn't happy, but I told myself it wasn't the end of the world because I already had plans to see Mitski at the All Things Go festival in October, so redemption would come soon enough. Then Hurricane Ian hit and my flight to DC that had a layover in Orlando was cancelled the day before I was supposed to leave. At that point, there was nothing I could do but laugh. Why did I think it would go any differently this time? No. I couldn't take it anymore. I dropped wayyyyy too much money on a different flight to DC with no layover. That flight was delayed by 5 hours, but I made it. Nothing was going to stop me.
Mitski's set starts. We're in the pit, I'm 5'2" so I'm on my tip toes, straining my neck to keep my eyes on Mitski. And then. Everyone's BeReals went off during Francis Forever and the crowd became a sea of phones. I was crushed. I had broken the curse, but 9 years too late.

Louis Tomlinson, a world idol in Miribilla
The former member of One Direction starts this Sunday at the Bilbao Arena the peninsular section of his 'Faith in the Future' tour
Josu Olarte | Sunday, October 1, 2023, 08:39
The individual emancipation of a successful group is always a complicated issue, especially when that process is gestated in the sparkling and feverish universe of the 'boybands', which only rarely lead to long-distance solo races. Of course, every rule has exceptions as well— notorious, as those starring global stars such as the former N'Sync, Justin Timberlake; Robbie Williams (Take That); or more recently, Harry Styles, with whom Louis Tomlinson (Doncaster, 1991) coincided in One Direction, the quintet that emerged from the television contest 'X Factor', which happens to be the most successful boyband in history, after having sold more than 70 million copies of the five albums they released between 2010 and 2015.
With his band gestated from television, Louis Troy Austin (he took the last name Tomlinson from his stepfather) learned about the hysteria of the fans and the challenges of fame (he was even speculated to have a relationship with Styles), and had six years of dazzling success, which reportedly earned about 50 million euros to each of its members.
Tomlinson— who on Sunday night will give one of only three concerts of his tour in Spain at the Bilbao Arena (21.00 hours)— may have always been seen as the most disposable boy in the band, but like his companions (Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne), he has tried to continue his career on his own since 2016. "With One Direction, I gained confidence on stage and vocally. Now I have to find my style and my place in the industry," he acknowledged, shortly after chaining a series of solo singles that although he says he is proud of them now, does not consider them musically representative.
Overcoming the death of his mother and an 18-year-old sister, Tomlinson continued to fight for emancipation as a singer and composer who, apart from Styles who is already at the top-level pop league, seems to be consolidating more solidly than his colleagues. Despite this, with "Walls", his debut in 2020 in which he included new songs and solo singles such as 'Just Hold On' [ed. This is untrue. Just Hold On was not included in Walls.], he seemed to explore all possible directions with choral production, from electronic music to sensitive ballads or Oasis-esque pop guitar, whom he covered in his first student band, from which he would be expelled.
Emulate The Indie Sound
With the ground paid by his television screening (linked to the 'X Factor' program [ed. 2018] as a mentor for new talents), Tomlinson embarked in 2020 on his first global tour of 80 concerts to promote his debut, 'Walls'. It was a massive and very profitable tour, given a pandemic situation and the forced stoppage caused by the virus. Louis took advantage of this time to offer a concert via livestreaming from London, becoming the soloist with the most virtual tickets sold (more than 160,000), a record ratified by the 'Guinness Book of World Records'.
After the tour and the break with Syco, the label of Simon Cowell, the head of 'X Factor', Tomlinson focused on the gestation of his next job with the support of the multinational BMG. Preceded by the single 'Bigger Than Me', the album 'Faith In The Future' was harshly criticized by the British press, but topped the sales charts in the United Kingdom in November last year. If his debut 'Walls', considered 'irrelevant', was criticized for his lack of musical definition, his new work has also been the subject of criticism for unreservedly emulating the sound of the British indie of the millennial era, pointing towards festival pop rock.
Perhaps in response to this recurring criticism in his solo career, Louis has included in the Deluxe edition of his latest album an ironic song entitled 'Copy Of A Copy Of A Copy'. In his concerts, Tomlinson presents himself with an organic and guitar-style band that evokes indie pop. In addition, it offers a great display of lights and sound, along with an unbridled enthusiasm of its followers.
Exceptional measures to avoid camping
The expectation raised by Louis Tomlinson has led the organization to take exceptional measures for access to the concert venue, and thus avoid the camping that, in recent days, dozens of fans from different parts of Europe had formed in the vicinity of the Bilbao Arena. Thus, the tour promoter has warned that attendees will be able to start queuing from nine in the morning this Sunday, but never "before." Those who arrive earlier will not only not receive the bracelets, but will also be moved to the end of the queue. Security members will place "sequentially numbered" wristbands on the wrists of the spectators "on a first-come, first-served basis." Fans must return to the queue at three in the afternoon and go to the access of the track located at gate A. "Security will respect the wristbands for one hour - from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. From four o'clock, the followers will line up as they arrive.

The 18th World Cinema Festival presents the “surreal romance” (Vogue) in its “Closing Night”. The on-screen appearances of Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, two of Ireland's hottest actors, are likely to provide star power. Lead actor Andrew Scott shone in his role as Moriarty in the BBC cult series “Sherlock” and other appearances in “James Bond 007: Specter” and “Fleabag”. Paul Mescal, star of the British series "Normal People", attracted worldwide attention with his moving performance in the independent hit "Aftersun". Director Andrew Haigh will also have fond memories for Berliners: his masterpiece “45 Years” won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2015, which the leading actors Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay received.

The future of HIFF – Love & Anarchy, one of Finland’s most significant film festivals, is under threat. HIFF is now calling on its audience to help. There are three types of tickets available for the support screenings, and you can support with either 25 €, 40 € or 100 €. The tickets will go on sale on 29.11.2023 at 11.00.
One of the most popular guests in the history of HIFF has been the Irish actor Andrew Scott, who visited Helsinki in 2014. It is only appropriate that we are the first in Finland to screen a film that will be one of the highlights of his career.
All of Us Strangers, directed and written by Andrew Haigh, is one of the highlights of the autumn. The film, which received top reviews at Telluride and the New York Film Festival, is a drama about loneliness, grief and a longing for love that gets under your skin.

Pleasing, like Harry's tour bookers, use data about who googles/accesses the website from which location to determine where they place their pop-up shops. It was in an article somewhere. (That's how Austin got a residency, too. There was another random place they did a couple of extra dates in, and it was because it was a travel hub in the centre of various locations where searches for tickets were high.)
In this case it follows on the heels of Beyoncé's album but I can't think of another time his team did something that copied a current artist's work, who did they rip off? (Plenty of artists from the past, of course!)
When will y'all ever listen to me? He played the Austin residency because it was at the Moody Center. Who owns the Moody Center? The Oakview Group. Who owns the Oakview Group?

It always comes back to him.
Always.

Billionaire dilettantes vs good Democrats
Tumblr media
Andrea Salinas should be a shoe-in to win the midterm election to represent Oregon’s 6th District; the Democratic candidate is facing an extraordinarily weak Republican challenger: the millionaire perennial also-ran, philanderer, drunk driver and oxy trafficker Mike Erickson:
https://prospect.org/politics/why-oregons-herschel-walker-could-win-mike-erickson-andrea-salinas/
Erickson claims to be tough on crime and anti-abortion, but when he plead guilty to a DUI, he managed to wriggle out of charges for the unprescribed Oxy the cops found (his defense boils down to “I wasn’t charged with possession so shut up about it or I’ll sue”):
https://oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2022/10/06/oregon-congressional-candidate-mike-erickson-sues-opponent-andrea-salinas-over-negative-ad/
Erickson also gave his girlfriend $300 and drove her to a “doctor’s office” that was actually an abortion clinic (his defense is that he didn’t know what kind of doctor he took his girlfriend to, that he was “dating” her but she wasn’t his “girlfriend,” and he didn’t know she was pregnant) (she contradicts this account):
https://jezebel.com/an-oregon-republican-candidate-is-also-lying-about-havi-1849642337
Erickson has a long history of running unsuccessfully for office. As the “Herschel Walker of Oregon,” he should be trailing substantially, despite his lavish spending. But he and Salinas are neck-and-neck:
https://prospect.org/politics/why-oregons-herschel-walker-could-win-mike-erickson-andrea-salinas/
That’s not because Andrea Salinas is a bad candidate! Far from it. She’s a veteran of the staff of the beloved Senator Harry Reid, a strong pro-union candidate who has been incredibly effective as an Oregon state legislator. She has lots of grassroots support, too — she defeated her primary challenger by 20 points.
So what’s holding Salinas back? Well, beating that primary challenger: Carrick Flynn, a first-time candidate who was propelled by $10m in attack-ads against Salinas, with all that money coming from crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s super PAC, Protect Our Future.
SBF also gave $6m to the House Majority PAC in return for the party’s endorsement of Flynn, despite the weakness of Flynn’s candidacy, and the PAC then laundered $1m of that money into Flynn’s campaign. Another “pop up” super PAC, Justice Unites Us, came into existence to funnel $50k more from Protect Our Future into Flynn’s candidacy, then went dormant.
Justice Unites Us co-opted social justice language, claiming to be an “AAPI-led and run organization” with the mission of “mobiliz[ing] the United States’ most rapidly growing voter bloc and help create progressive change across the country” — high-minded rhetoric that disguised the group’s role as a cutout for more billionaire dark-money. NBC fell for the scam and published a glowing account of Justice Unites Us, after they had ceased activity:
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2022-election/democrats-target-asian-americans-new-super-pac-rcna29875
Now, Salinas — who drubbed Flynn and his “effective altruism” campaign — is fighting Erickson with a huge disadvantage. Her grassroots, small-dollar donor supporters already spent themselves dry fending off a billionaire’s plaything, and now she faces a corrupt, hypocritical millionaire who is flooding the field with his own fortune.
Despite Salinas’s victory, many voters believe that the race is between Flynn and Erickson, because all of those millions spent on Flynn ads gave him name recognition, as The American Prospect*’s Austin Ahlman discovered when he visited the district.
The problem of wealthy dilettantes draining the coffers of good Democratic candidates is not unique to the Oregon’s 6th race. Across the country and up and down the ticket, the popular, progressive candidates who won their primaries are going into the general having drained their supporters’ discretionary savings in fending off unpopular rich cranks who decided to buy themselves elected office:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/02/oligarchs-r-us/#hooray-for-slugwell
I just sent Salinas’s campaign $50. If you can afford to give, I hope you will, too. Salinas is a great candidate, an experienced lawmaker, and has a great platform. Her opponent, Erickson isn’t just a MAGA hypocrite — he’s a danger to the nation. If he gets into office, we will all be worse off.

i get what you're saying. ofc i don't think artists are birthday cakes and it's not possible for them to go to every place in the world (they'll never come where i live and im fine with that). but harry touring US all over again after he already toured it while other continents of the world havent seen him since 2018 is just not justifiable. it's an easy money move. louis at least tries to be more inclusive. and not just with touring but also his prices, livestreaming concerts for all his fans and so many more little things.
Again, I think you’re imagining that everywhere in the world is the same cost to get to and tour to and brings in the same revenue. And that’s just not true.
Plus, the pandemic is still very real globally. There are still restrictions on who can travel where.
The US is the biggest single market that has lax security for Harry. Meaning, he can come into the United States and move around and hit hundreds of millions of people. Japan is a huge market but to the best of my knowledge, travel is restricted there.
I’d also just note that the US is very very big geographically. So, there are 4 locations in the US and 1 in Canada, here’s how it plays out for me living in South Carolina:
Los Angeles - 2,338 miles, 6 hour flight, 36 hour drive
New York City - 736 miles, 2 hour flight, 12 hour drive
Chicago - 715 miles, 2 hour flight, 11 hour drive
Austin - 1,047 miles, 3 hour flight, 16 hour drive
Toronto - can’t go here, Canada has restrictions from US
Could Harry do a similar thing in Europe? Probably. But restrictions from country to country means that there may not be free movement.
Again, I’m not saying that it’s wrong to feel some kind of way about him not touring more of the world. But I think saying it’s not justifiable is missing some of the point.
Louis didn’t livestream for all his fans. Do you know how many people came to me both times hoping for sponsored tickets? $20 was inaccessible for a whole swath of people. I do agree that Louis tries. But Louis’s tickets aren’t cheap either. He currently doesn’t do dynamic pricing but Harry didn’t either in smaller venues. So, when Louis gets to arena size venues in the US I’ll be able to actually compare them.
Harry and Louis have the same priced merch.
My main point is that I think there are a million considerations for why tours happen where they do. And if you overlay the locations for Harry, Niall, Louis, and One Direction you’ll see they go to basically the same markets with very little variation. In many cases they even go to the same venues.

Hi Amy, I hope the antibiotics kicked in and you are feeling a lot better! So, a whole bunch of things just fell into place unexpectedly and I’m going to end up going to Austin to see Harry! I bought a ticket for the “sky zone” of the venue totally misunderstanding that it was not Pit. It’s standing only but apparently up on the 2nd (or even 3rd) floor. I tried some of those sites that give you the “view from” but am still confused. Just wondering if any of your followers have ever been to Moody and know what it is like and if it’s going to be a really bad view (meaning WAY far away).
Hi honey. I’m not Amy. Her blog is @suburban--unicorn
