EDIT FROM 31/05/2025: Didn’t make it in time for MerMay? Do not fret! You are totally allowed to post things late, I will be accepting MerMay posts prrrobably until October (when I’m hosting TMNTober again so look forward to that, turtle fandom!) <3
AVAST, YE! Welcome to:
🦀🦈 Trauma’s Mermay 2025! 🐋🐬
Where we temporarily detach from the usual Halloween-y Inktober-y vibes full of pumpkins, autumn leaves and undead horror, and instead enjoy the warmth, smell of the ocean, and underwater horror! (Because it’s still me and I gotta throw some edge in there, right?)
Here’s the rules!
If you want me to see and collect your art here, tag this blog, currently named @ traumas-mermay-2025 !! I will also be following and checking two tags, #traumasmermay and #traumasmermay2025 (if some brave and awesome soul posts on AO3, use these same tags and feel free to tag me @ secreterces5)
No specific fandom for this one! I know mostly TMNT folks follow me on here, but hey, this is a chance to show off OCs, DnD ideas, and other blorbos you would like to turn into fish people! Can’t wait to see them!
ANY ARTFORM IS ALLOWED. Drawings/paintings physical and digital, writing long and short including drabbles and blurbs. I wanna see all of it!! Introduce me to new things I had no idea about! If I get insane enough I might try to make something out of clay!!
If you feel intimidated by a list of everyday prompts but would still like a structured challenge, fear not! You may instead focus on only the mermaid specific prompts, spaced out to occur every three or four days (the math was complicated on this okay don’t ask), focusing on fun mermaid designing . . .
. . . or you may pick one of the “sets” the list has been divided into, and try to create a linked story using the entire set!
Of course, you do NOT have to do all the prompts, you don’t have to do them in order (though I will schedule early art to post on the day of the prompt), and you don’t even have to post them in May! I’m down to accept late submissions until October, to be honest! Point is, feel free to take inspiration wherever whenever, and make only as many as you can without burning out <3
So in short: do whatever you fish! ;D
Some of these prompts can be turned into spooky art, and you are free and encouraged to do so, but always remember to tag with appropriate warnings!
These are mermaids and plenty of mermaids are not bogged down by human social standards. This blog allows naked mermaids, feel free to tag with nudity if you want and if you do, I will tag it in my reblog too. Preferably don’t send me porn, but I’m a big believer in not-automatically-sexual boobs and such. Be blessed. Mwah!
Full prompt list version:
Only Mermaids Version:

Usually I would announce each prompt on the corresponding day, but this time I’ll be doing so in sets. As usual, though, I’ll sprinkle in some extra ideas for y’all :) That will be all, and with that:
BEST FISHES, EVERYONE!
(All prompts will also be written out in text under the readmore!)
1. Mermaid in a Bucket 🪣
2. Aquarium 🎫
3. Bubbles 🫧
4. Anything-but-fishtail Mermaid 🐙
5. Old Fairytales 📖
6. Frozen Over / Iceberg 🧊

𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 (𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗲, 𝗻𝗮𝘁, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮, 𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗲)
cw: n/a
𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗲
❅ lottie is one of the biggest holiday fanatics there is, and she will not shy away from it. she's preparing weeks before it's socially acceptable, however she doesn't mention it to anybody because she doesn't want to have to hear "x holiday isn't for two months" for the twentieth time
❅ however, she prefers decorating for the holidays to actually celebrating, which is mostly due to the fact that her parents are rarely every home for the holidays. she's always seen the holidays as lonely, which confuses you and fills you with sorrow. after all, she deserves to experience the holidays full of the same love and light that she always shows you
❅ this is fantastic news for you, as you have no problem practically moving into her house. the second both your parents give you permission, you're packing the biggest suitcase, preparing to spent the entire month of december living with her
❅ HUUUGE decorator! i don't think she'd like really flashy decorations, but she definitely likes to put decorations all over the place. one perk of her being incredibly rich is you two have a practically endless bucket list of holiday decor and no budget
❅ she doesn't really care about receiving gifts, as the fact that you'd give your time to spend the holidays with her is the biggest gift she could ask for, but she will be spending far too much money when giving gifts. expect every single item you have ever expected interest in to be under that tree, whether it's $5 or $700
𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗲
❅ nat has never been a huge holiday person. similarly to lottie, she's never had a great family experience during the holidays, so it's safe to say that she's pretty bitter around the holiday season
❅ you're trying everything you can to make the holidays exciting for her. you're pulling out every stop - buying her ridiculous matching pj sets, making her help you put ornaments on your family's tree (since her family never had one), dragging her out to drive-in light displays, etc. you even manage to get her to wear a santa hat, which was a huge win in your eyes
❅ and, ok, she's starting to get the appeal. just maybe. she still has her reservations, but she's starting to open up to the concept
❅ by far her favorite holiday tradition with you is watching absolutely godawful hallmark christmas films and mocking them relentlessly. you both absolutely drag the shit out of each and every movie you watch. she claims they're all stupid, but you've sworn you've caught her crying at one particularly emotional family scene
❅ you try to get the two of you under a mistletoe for the entire holiday season. she's conveniently dodging all of the mistletoe you've put up around your houses, to the point that you swear she knows what she's doing. eventually you get so fed up that you sneak one into your pocket, distract her, and then when she looks back you're holding a mistletoe over your heads while puckering your lips. she scoffs but rules are rules, aren't they?
𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮
❅ shauna, similarly to nat, is not really a holiday person. she doesn't dislike it, necessarily, she just feels otherwise indifferent about it (especially given her short-lived catholic phase)
❅ she is a big fan of autumn and winter - they're her favorite seasons, and she absolutely loves doing seasonal things such as drinking everything peppermint-flavored and sitting by the fireplace. it fills her with joy when you want to do these things with her
❅ snow is beautiful to her, but only when she's inside. the second that you drag her out in the snow, she will be complaining about how cold it is (which you counter with "yeah, duh! that's the point!") despite being an avid snow hater, she'll kick ass in a snowball fight. you learned your lesson from the one time you challenged her to one and after a few minutes of complaining, she absolutely pelted your ass
❅ much more of a fan of meaningful, handmade gifts than store-bought stocking stuffers. with every gift she gets (or makes) you, she writes a letter explaining what it is and why she wanted to buy it for you. she also writes a long letter telling you how grateful she is to have you in her life, and how you've made the holidays so much more fun for her
❅ she does NOT play about ugly sweaters. she used to think they were the dumbest thing and that the whole concept didn't make much sense, but after being gifted one by you, her opinion has shifted quite a bit. if there's an ugly sweater contest, she will be in attendance, and she will be winning
𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗲
❅ oh. my. god. have you seen jackie? she is possibly the most excited person on this planet earth about the holidays. she has so much holiday cheer that it's infectuous. i mean, how can you not feel festive when she's decked from head to toe in tinsel and bows?
❅ part of me wants to say that she's horrendous at wrapping presents, but let's be real. you'd think she belongs at santa's factory the way she wraps those damn presents. she is so particular about her wrapping paper and she will throw a fit if her bows don't match the color of the wrapping. however, the process of wrapping leaves the entire space looking like a christmas hurricane made direct contact
❅ SNOW!! ANGELS!! she does hate the cold and whines about getting her shoes wet, but that won't stop her from running out the second there's enough to make a snow angel, dragging you with her as she goes. she definitely tries to make your snow angels kiss, or at the very least, draws hearts around them in the snow
❅ the biggest snuggler. the second the temperature drops beneath 40° she will be wrapped up in your arms (and also about 5 separate fuzzy blankets) for the entire month of december and if you dare to even think about moving, she'll pout at you until you settle back into her. even if you have to get up, she'll stay wrapped in her blankets and attached to you the whole time. so what if she's holding onto you like a koala while you try and make yourself hot cocoa?
❅ she 100% has to stop herself from getting you up at 6 am sharp on christmas morning. her parents never let her get up before 8 in the morning on christmas, so she feels giddy whenever you get up to presents at an obscenely early time, even if you're still half-asleep as you rip the wrapping off your gifts. you genuinely think you notice her look upset when you tear her wrapping off, but you could've just been imagining things

Language Tag!
I was tagged in this fun tag by @woodsyrain56 , thank you I love talking about languages!
But the original post had me scrolling for literal minutes, so I decided to set up a new one :D
What languages do my mutuals know?
German is my first language, but I'm also fluent in English - obviously.
I had 2 years of French in school and learned nothing at all.
I studied Latin for 5 years and barely passed the final exam...
I picked Spanish as an elective in High School and attended it for 1.5 years. It certainly taught me some basics, but I only really started to get a grasp on the language when, years later, I decided to study it on my own. I can now find my way around a Spanish city, I'd assume. Go shopping, order at a restaurant and all that. According to Duolingo, that places me somewhere around high A1 level. So there is still a lot to learn for me, and I continue to study it a little every day.
Recently, when we were planning to visit Prague, I decided to pick up Czech, which is a fun challenge. Not that I can have a conversation (yet) besides introducing myself and asking for a pen. But it's actually fun to learn a Slavic language. Sadly, our trip didn't work out, and I have never been to Prague. But one day.
I'm travelling to Edinburgh in autumn, so I picked up Scottish Gaelic with no serious intentions. Just to have some fun with it.
Other languages I dabbled in but didn't stick with for very long are Italian and Russian.
Languages still on my bucket list include Swedish, Romanian, Danish and German Sign Language.
I am tagging @saganarojanaolt @crowleyholmes @seekers-who-are-lovers @ironwingedhawk @polizwrites @prettyrealisticjohnlockfanart and everyone else who wants to pass this on to their mutuals.
As always, no pressure <3

Iceland - An Introduction
Our decision to travel to Iceland was entirely spontaneous. With a week set aside for a holiday, we chose to forego the typical warm and sunny destinations, opting instead for a land of dramatic landscapes and 130 volcanoes—yes, you read that right, 130 volcanoes. The stunning scenery alone made it an unbeatable choice, especially if the country as been on your bucket list for many years.
Initially, we had thought about staying closer to home and exploring and hiking within the UK. However, as we dove deeper into our research, it made sense that traveling abroad was more fitting in terms of experiences and adventure. Our plans took a redirection, and the trip turned out to be incredibly rewarding, full of surprises and invaluable lessons.
Planning the trip in just two months was a challenge. It demanded extensive research, and we quickly discovered that information was scattered across various sources—books, YouTube videos, documentaries, and countless articles—each offering different opinions and advice. Despite the challenges, we knew three things for certain: we’d be traveling in the autumnal season, we had just one week to explore and, over hearing a lot of people, it would be very expensive. Our mission? To stay on budget with the freedom to see as much of Iceland as possible.
Researching and identifying all the places we wanted to visit, the experiences we hoped to have, and, of course, assessing our strengths and limitations influenced our planning process. However, no matter how meticulously you plan, reality often takes its own course—and that’s perfectly okay. In fact, we believe some of the best experiences stem from those unplanned, spontaneous moments.

Through this short blog series, we aim to share the realities of travel that most people don’t talk about—the ups, the downs, and everything in between. By sharing our honest experiences and practical insights, we hope to help you prepare for your own Icelandic adventure while embracing the unexpected.

♡ Open starter ft. Piper Allegheny ♡ Location: Fennec's Confectionary ♡ Date & Time: Friday, 6:40pm
Finally settling into Saintes presented Piper with a plethora of unforeseen challenges. One example was how it had taken her a solid few days to comfortably sort out running Fennec’s alone, since she'd been so accustomed to having her father around as a helping hand. Likely the worst part by her own standards was that there wasn't anyone she could divvy up the lengthy, arduous list of closing tasks with anymore.
However, one of her favorite chores since she’d been a little girl had always been freshening up the floral centerpieces for the seating areas. Although she was no designer by any means, Piper felt fairly confident in the shop’s early autumn makeover. The vivid red poinsettias she’d been cultivating in her garden at home added a fitting contrast against the rest of the orange toned fall decor, and being able to reuse a few emptied jam jars as vases was the perfect way to tie in the confectionary’s essence. Just as she’d finished setting up the second to last centerpiece, Piper accidentally bumped one of them off the counter with a misplaced swipe of the hand, sending it careening to the floor. She winced as it shattered by her feet, water and glass shards spreading around a handful of the poor red flowers.
Piper let out a defeated sigh and cautiously stepped over the mess, hurrying off to the utility closet for a broom and dust pan. As if with no better timing, she could hear the welcome bell above the front door chime as a last minute customer entered the shop.
"Ah- hello! I'm so sorry, just give me one teensy moment and I'll be right with you!” Piper shouted to them from inside the closet as she struggled to fight the broom out, which for some forsaken reason was trapped behind a barrier of raggedy old mops and cleaning buckets. “Feel free to take a look at the menu!"

Is Chulu West Peak Hard to Climb? Real Insights and Experience

Chulu West Peak (6,419 meters / 21,060 feet) is one of the most stunning and adventurous trekking peaks in Nepal’s Annapurna region. Towering above the Manang Valley and offering jaw-dropping views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Chulu West is a bucket-list climb for many aspiring mountaineers.
But the big question remains: Is Chulu West hard to climb?
The answer depends on your experience, preparation, and expectations. In this article, we share real insights from climbers, break down the technical challenges, and offer a clear perspective on what it truly takes to summit Chulu West Peak.
Understanding Chulu West: An Overview
Chulu West is part of the larger Chulu Massif, which includes Chulu East, Chulu Far East, and Chulu Central. Among them, Chulu West is the highest and most demanding, both in terms of altitude and technical difficulty.
Situated north of the Annapurna range, the peak is often climbed in conjunction with the Annapurna Circuit Trek, making it accessible yet remote.
How Hard is Chulu West to Climb?
The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) classifies Chulu West as a "Trekking Peak", but do not let the label fool you. It is significantly more challenging than lower trekking peaks like Island Peak or Yala Peak.
Here's a breakdown of the major difficulty factors:
1. Altitude and Acclimatization
At over 6,400 meters, altitude is the number one challenge. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real risk, especially if you ascend too quickly. The high altitude affects your breathing, energy levels, and sleep.
Solution: Proper acclimatization is essential. Most itineraries include gradual ascents with rest days around Manang (3,540 m) and at base camp. Doing the Annapurna Circuit trek beforehand helps your body adjust better to high elevations.
2. Technical Difficulty
Chulu West is considered moderately technical, especially from High Camp to the summit. The terrain includes:
Glacier travel with crevasses
Snow slopes (up to 40-50 degrees incline)
Ice sections that may require fixed ropes
Wind-exposed ridgelines
While not a full alpine expedition, it’s definitely not a walk in the park. You need to be comfortable using crampons, harnesses, ice axes, and be able to navigate through snow and ice.
3. Weather Conditions
Weather above 5,000 meters can change rapidly. Summit pushes often begin at 1 or 2 AM to avoid strong winds and whiteouts later in the day.
Even in the best trekking seasons (spring and autumn), you may face:
Sub-zero temperatures
Harsh winds
Sudden snowstorms
Bad weather can delay or cancel summit attempts. A flexible itinerary with buffer days is advisable.
4. Physical Fitness
Chulu West requires excellent physical conditioning. You'll be carrying gear, walking on glaciers, and enduring long hours at altitude.
Climbers often trek 6–8 hours a day with altitude gains of 500–800 meters. On summit day, you may be climbing for 10 to 12 hours, which requires stamina and mental strength.
Recommended preparation includes:
Cardiovascular training (hiking, running, cycling)
Strength training (especially legs and core)
Endurance treks with a backpack
Altitude simulation if possible
5. Logistics and Climbing Support
Climbing Chulu West is not a solo mission. A successful expedition typically includes:
Licensed guide(s)
Porters or yaks to carry equipment
Base Camp and High Camp support
Climbing gear (ropes, ice screws, tents, stoves)
Permits and insurance
Unlike trekking peaks like Mera or Lobuche East, Chulu West is less commercialized, so having a reliable trekking agency is essential for a well-managed expedition.
Real Insights from Climbers
Many climbers describe Chulu West as “rewarding but underestimated. Here are a few common takeaways:
“It was much harder than I expected, especially after High Camp.”
“We had to turn back 200 meters below the summit due to weather. It’s no joke up there.”
“I trained for three months and still found the summit day brutal.”
“The views from the top were surreal. You can see Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Peak, and even Tibet.”
In short, Chulu West is hard, but achievable if you are well-prepared and guided by experienced professionals.
Best Time to Climb Chulu West
The ideal climbing seasons are:
Autumn (September to November): Stable weather, clear skies, best visibility.
Spring (March to May): Warmer temperatures, blooming trails, fewer crowds.
Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) and deep winter (December to February) due to heavy snow and unsafe climbing conditions.
Required Permits
Climbing Chulu West requires the following permits:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) – USD 30
TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System) – USD 20
Climbing Permit for Chulu West – Around USD 350 (varies by season)
All permits can be arranged by your trekking agency.

Rara Lake Motorcycle Tour: The Ultimate Himalayan Escape

If you're dreaming of an epic motorcycle adventure in Nepal, there’s no destination quite like Rara Lake. Hidden away in the remote northwestern part of the country, Rara Lake is the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in Nepal. Riding there on a motorcycle is not just a trip—it's an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Himalayas.
For riders looking for a true escape into nature, away from crowded tourist spots, the Rara Lake motorcycle tour offers rugged trails, stunning alpine scenery, vibrant local cultures, and a rewarding sense of adventure. In this guide, we’ll take you through why Rara is perfect for motorcycle touring, the best times to go, what to expect on the road, and how to prepare for this ultimate Himalayan escape.
Why Choose a Motorcycle Tour to Rara Lake?
Nepal has many famous riding routes, but Rara Lake remains a hidden gem. It offers a unique blend of raw natural beauty, challenging yet rewarding roads, and the deep sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching such a remote location.
Here’s why a motorcycle ride to Rara Lake should be on your bucket list:
Spectacular Scenery: Imagine riding through dense forests, crossing sparkling rivers, winding through hills, and arriving at a crystal-clear blue lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
Remote Adventure: Far from busy tourist areas, Rara offers true solitude and a connection with untouched nature.
Cultural Encounters: The journey takes you through traditional villages where you can experience authentic local hospitality and culture.
Challenging Roads: The route combines paved roads, dirt trails, and rocky paths, making it an exciting challenge for adventurous riders.
Rara Lake is a place where the journey itself becomes just as important and memorable as the destination.
Best Time for a Rara Lake Motorcycle Tour
Planning the right time for your trip is essential to make the most of your Rara Lake motorcycle tour.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is a beautiful time to ride to Rara. The weather is warm but not too hot, and the forests are alive with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. Clear skies allow for excellent mountain views.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is arguably the best season for this tour. After the summer rains, the landscape is lush and green, and visibility is excellent. Cool temperatures and dry trails make riding more comfortable and enjoyable.
Winter (December to February)
Winter offers clear skies and stunning snow-covered scenery, but temperatures can be freezing, especially at higher elevations. Only attempt a winter ride if you are well-prepared with proper cold-weather gear.
Avoid the Monsoon (June to August)
Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season can make the trails muddy and difficult to ride. Landslides are also common, making this a risky time for the Rara Lake route.
Choosing the Right Motorcycle for the Journey
Because the route to Rara Lake involves a mix of terrain—from smooth highways to rugged mountain tracks—choosing the right motorcycle is crucial.
Recommended Bikes:
Royal Enfield Himalayan (411cc): Known for its ability to handle rough roads and off-road sections comfortably.
Hero Xpulse 200: Lightweight and affordable, perfect for the dirt tracks along the way.
Honda CRF250L: A reliable dirt bike for handling rocky and challenging trails with ease.
Key Features to Look For:
Good suspension for bumpy roads
Strong brakes for downhill sections
Off-road capable tires with deep treads
Comfortable seating for long hours of riding
Before starting your journey, make sure your bike is properly serviced, and check essentials like tires, brakes, and lights.
Challenges and Rewards of the Rara Lake Ride
The road to Rara Lake is not your typical paved highway tour. It’s a real adventure, and knowing what to expect can help you better prepare.
Road Conditions
Be ready for a mix of conditions:
Well-paved highways early on
Gravel and dirt roads
Steep uphill and downhill sections
River crossings in some areas
While the roads can be rough, the slow pace lets you fully absorb the stunning natural beauty around you.
Altitude
Rara Lake sits at about 2,990 meters (9,810 feet). Altitude sickness is less common here than in much higher areas, but it’s still wise to take it easy and stay hydrated.
Remote Locations
Facilities become more basic the closer you get to Rara. Accommodation, food, and fuel stops can be limited, so it’s important to plan carefully.
Tip: Carry extra fuel and essential snacks for emergencies, especially between remote villages.
Essential Tips for a Successful Rara Lake Motorcycle Tour
A little preparation goes a long way toward making your journey smooth and enjoyable. Here’s what you should keep in mind:
1. Pack the Right Gear
Essentials include:
Quality riding jacket and pants with armor
Helmet, gloves, and sturdy riding boots
Rain gear and warm clothing (weather changes fast)
First aid kit and medications
Tools, spare tubes, and a puncture repair kit
2. Stay Flexible
Weather and road conditions can change quickly. Always have a flexible mindset, and don’t rush. It’s better to ride slower and safely than to risk accidents in tough conditions.
3. Carry Important Documents
Make sure you have:
A valid motorcycle license
Vehicle registration papers
Insurance documents
National Park entry permits if needed (for Rara National Park)
4. Respect Local Cultures
The journey takes you through remote villages where traditional ways of life are preserved. Always be respectful, dress modestly, and ask before taking photos.
5. Travel with a Buddy or Group
While solo rides to Rara are possible, it’s safer and more enjoyable to travel with at least one partner or in a small group.
Highlights Along the Way to Rara Lake
One of the best parts of a Rara Lake motorcycle tour is the diversity of landscapes and cultures you experience en route. Here are some key highlights:
Surkhet
Often the starting point after leaving Kathmandu or Pokhara, Surkhet is a bustling valley town where you can rest, fuel up, and prepare for the more rugged sections ahead.
Dailekh and Kalikot
The ride through these districts introduces you to rural Nepal at its most authentic. Expect terraced fields, traditional houses, and smiling locals.
Sinja Valley
Before reaching Rara, the Sinja Valley offers an incredible glimpse into Nepal’s ancient past. It’s known as the birthplace of the Nepali language and is dotted with archaeological sites.
Rara National Park
Home to a wide variety of wildlife, including musk deer, Himalayan black bears, and countless bird species. The ride through the park is serene, and the final approach to the lake feels magical.
Rara Lake
The moment you arrive at Rara, all the challenges of the road melt away. The serene blue waters, surrounded by pine-covered hills and distant mountains, create a peaceful atmosphere unlike any other place in Nepal. Whether you sit quietly on the shore, take a walk around the lake, or simply enjoy the silence, Rara offers a deep, calming reward.
