I think the prevalence of the opposites attract trope in the romance genre has led people to believe this dynamic is a necessary part of romance and not just one potential dynamic. 

Like don’t get me wrong, there’s something very satisfying about watching two very different people come together and love all the different things about each other. Poppy and her wanderlust and exuberance with Alex and his khaki shorts and homebody-ness. January with her romance novels and Gus with his pessimistic literary novels. Even Rapunzel the ray of sunshine with the jaded thief Eugene. It’s a tried and true formula and it works. Grumpy x sunshine is often an offset of this dynamic and it’s well loved for a reason.  

But characters who are similar...also work? Like let’s not forget that having interests and goals in common with your significant other is a good thing. If Book Lovers taught me anything (stars i love that book), it’s that characters who are the “same” in a lot of ways can be the ones who understand each other on a deeper level. In Book Lovers, Nora is a cold-hearted shark to everyone who knows her, but since Charlie is similarly ambitious and dedicated to his job, he’s able to see past that and understand Nora for who she is. Not only that, he respects her drive and dedication, something everyone else overlooked. He helps Nora to see the good in herself that everyone else missed, and she does the same for him. 

The reason I’m talking about this is because I’ve seen posts recently saying things like “Avery and Jameson are the same person so they don’t work as a couple.” Or there are people who don’t understand or appreciate the Portwell dynamic. Which, it’s fine if this isn’t your preferred dynamic, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a possible romance, or that it’s not good. 

Avery and Jameson aren’t the exact same person, but they understand each other, which allows them to be in sync and know what the other is thinking without them needing to speak. They know when the other needs them to step back, or distract them, or to pursue a clue or a thrilling experience. They find the same things in life exciting, and they operate on the same wavelength, so to speak. Yes, this would make for a great friendship, but it also makes for a great romantic relationship, because you know each other and can appreciate the same things and enjoy things together. 

Stefan and Elena work so well together for a lot of reasons but part of it is because they’re both extremely selfless, so they can respect each other’s choices and also give the other person a chance to be put first, something they don’t experience a lot elsewhere.

Gina and EJ are different people but they both have a drive to succeed, they’re both ambitious, they’re both willing to go to shady lengths to accomplish their goals (talking about season 1 in that regard), which is why they’re able to connect. They can see the good and the bad that they share, and it helps them to better accept themselves. 

Which is one thing I’ve come to love about relationships with similar characters (idk what this is officially called. Same attracts?): The characters learn to accept their own flaws as they accept the flaws of the person they love. It’s so good guys. 

Also, it’s worth noting: in a lot of opposites attract scenarios, the characters don’t actually have that much common ground, and if we were to see their relationship play out past the end credits or final chapter, we’d see their interactions slowly fall apart. Because if they’re too opposite, then their goals and interests will take them down separate paths.

So this is a Grey's Anatomy post because I can't help but marvel at the number of doctors that are related to each other in this show 😂😂

You know how Kylie and Kendall Jenner only got famous because they're related to Kim Kardashian? And the Scarlet Witch (AKA Elizabeth Olsen) probably wouldn't be who she was without Mary Kate and Ashley? Or even how Maude Apatow (Euphoria) and Jaden Smith struck lucky with their parents - Judd Apatow and Jada Pinkett/Will Smith?

Some people get all the luck - they are connected to the right people and it makes their lives a thousand times better than the rest of us 😭. Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital has it's own share of family and friend drama most of the time (remember the Link - Amelia - Owen - Teddy - Tom drama? or Meredith and her surprise sisters?), but sometimes even these characters take it too far and we have to call it out!

So just to lay out the family relationship (not including romantic relationships) on this show:

Meredith: 2 sisters (Lexie & Maggie), and her mom Ellis Grey

Derek: 1 sister (Amelia) and 1 nephew (Lucas Adams Shepherd)

Owen: 1 sister (Megan)

Andrew: 1 sister (Carina)

Jackson: his mom (Catherine Fox) and his grandad (Harper Avery)

Richard Webber: his bio daughter Maggie (this is a technicality but still!)

I won't even get into the tangled web that is the dating chart of the doctors at the hospital! So many characters have gotten jobs that they really weren't qualified for based on the relationshipsnthey have

"Am I in trouble?” You asked the question with only a hint of seriousness, not quite believing you had any reason to be in such trouble but pondering it all the same with how quiet your dad had been since he’d picked you up from college. The entire drive home, he’d been biting at his lip, tapping his fingers against the driving wheel, humming under his breath to songs he didn’t even know on the radio...all tell-tale signs that something was on his mind. Something he had yet to disclose to you, who’d only put up with his uncharacteristic silence because you’d had quite a tiring day and weren’t necessarily going to complain about some extra peace before the busyness of home slapped you right across the face.

Now you were parked outside the house, you figured it best to get it—whatever it was—over with so you could actually sleep that night.

Derek, one hand on the car door, the other on his seat belt, frowned immediately and turned to face you. “Huh? Why would you be in trouble?”

You shrugged, opening the door. “No reason,” you said. “Just...well. You haven’t talked much since you picked me up, which is weird. That’s all.” You stepped out and shut the door, conveniently missing Derek’s agitated sigh and his self-admonishing whisper of “idiot” before he followed you out.

“You’re not in trouble,” he assured you with a tight-lipped smile, locking the car.

“Bad day, then?” you asked. “Argument with Meredith? Is that tooth hurting again?”

Derek subconsciously put a hand to his jaw at that, but offered a forced smile as you walked slowly towards the front door, evidencing his answer of no. Puffing your cheeks out, you shook your head and resigned yourself to receiving as good as it was currently going to get. 

There was a brief moment, between Derek putting his hand on the door’s handle and pushing it open, that you caught a glimpse of a grin on his face. There was a very short amount of time to acknowledge and act upon such an expression, however, as the second he pushed the door open, a chorus of cheers, the sudden sound of party poppers and horns, and your own responding scream resounded in your ears.

Instinctively, you curled in on yourself, launching your forearms up to protect your face and cowering back from the cacophony of noise. The cheering turned to laughter as Derek came up behind you and wrapped his arms around your neck, pulling you playfully back into his chest and placing a loud kiss on your temple as you stayed rigid, mouth open and eyes wide. Once you had partly recovered, you let your eyes rove the room, catching the tables of food, the countless balloons and streamers, and the huge CONGRATULATIONS banner hung across the far wall. It seemed as though the entire surgical floor were standing in your living room, most of them with drinks in their hands and party hats strapped onto their heads, kids running around the place and whacking each other with balloons.

“You might wanna change your face before it stays like that forever,” Jackson called through the crowd, and everyone erupted into laughter again as you shut your mouth and slowly let a grin worm its way onto your lips.

“There she is!” Callie yelled, clapping her hands.

You shook your head and put your face in your hands. “You guys are crazy!” 

“What? You thought we’d let you get into Harvard and not throw a surprise party?” Derek asked.

“Congratulations, Y/N,” Meredith said as she moved forward, passing you a glass of champagne. “We’re all so proud of you.”

“Come on! Let’s do shots!” Alex waved a bottle of vodka in the air and Richard slapped his hand, mentioning something about the children and the fact it was only four in the afternoon, which Alex vehemently protested against the importance of.

You glanced over your shoulder. “You were worried about spilling the secret, huh?”

Derek chuckled. “You know me,” he said, then kissed the tip of your nose. “I love you, sweetheart.”

“Love you too, Dad.”

“But I really should arrange an appointment with the dentist,” he deliberated quietly, his hand reaching for his jaw again.
