AVERY

If there's one thing Avery had learned as a 21 year old philanthropist, it's that it doesn't matter how rich you are or how many people you have working for you, if you want something done correctly, you have to do it yourself. 

She was beyond frustrated as she walked into the foyer of the Hawthorne House. It still gave her the same homely comfort. She couldn't wait to go to bed and fall asleep with Jameson wrapped around her. She missed seeing him awake. She sometimes hoped that he couldn't fall asleep so that they could talk and spend some time together. 

Where was he? She stopped walking when she saw Lyra in the solarium with a cigarette in one hand and a glass in the other. 

I should ask her. 

"Hey" 

"Oh look who decided to show up" Lyra seemed annoyed to Avery, but she couldn't make out why. 

"What's wrong?" She asked.

"What's wrong? You didn't even show up to your own birthday party!" 

"Wha-" realisation dawned on Avery mid-sentence. Her blood turned to ice as Lyra grew even more pissed than before.

"You're seriously not telling me you forgot your own birthday. I bet you don't even remember about last night's dinner plan with your beau." 

Dinner pla- the card. Oh no. 

She had it with her, but she'd forgotten to solve the riddle on it. But Lyra seemed agitated enough already, so she stayed quiet. 

"I'm so sorry, Ly. I'm so, so sorry. Where is everyone?"

Where is Jameson? 

"All about the house. I haven't seen Jamie, either. Maybe he's still waiting in the miserable little party room" she sassed, Avery couldn't blame her.

Her thoughts came to a screeching hault as she went to the ballroom. It was covered in platinum and violet decorations and a banner that said 'Happy Birthday to the Prettiest Girl on Earth!' It was gorgeous. Guilt hit her like a brick.

How many occasions like this had she missed and didn't know? 

"Avery?" 

"Xander."

"Where were you?" He said with a frown. Xander Hawthorne almost never frowned. She didn't answer Xander's question and instead asked her own.

"Where's Jameson?" 

"I don't know. He's probably tryna catch a breath in the solarium or the passageways." 

"Catching a breath?"

Yep. I've screwed up.

"Yeah. He seemed upset. We waited for you for two hours in a crouch. We're going to have a funeral for our toes," he told her. He didn't put his usual xander-esque sarcastic flair to it. 

Correction: I've screwed up, bad. 

Avery called Oren over and told him to find Jameson. 

In the time that Avery, Grayson and Xander got to Jameson's wing, everyone else had also started searching for him and tried to call him. She slipped inside his room. It always smelled so… him. He still wore the same perfume she got for him on his birthday. She pushed aside the nostalgia and started looking for anything that was out of order. So far, everything was normal - messy room, chair piled full of clothes. Pictures of her on his nightstand. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the bathroom door slightly ajar.

"We found nothing. Did you?" 

She could not did not answer Grayson and Xander as she pushed the bathroom door. It gave out a long squeak, as if to make a grand entrance to the horror it was. She heard Xander gasp and Grayson suck in a breath.

The mirror was shattered into a million pieces. The cracks were concentric, meaning he'd probably punched it. He had punched it, considering the crimson in the sink. Avery saw a thousand reflections of herself in the gleaming pieces. She recognised none. How could I have been so blind? She could feel the dread and panic brewing in her gut.

A box lay on the ground. She gingerly picked it up. 

"I'll go see if Oren found out anything" said Grayson, and took Xander away with him.

"He did what?" Avery said in disbelief.

"He was last seen at the airport." 

"And that's all you found out?" Asked Grayson.

"Yes. They said they were legally restrained from sharing the whereabouts of a person's private jets or their destinations." 

"He got a plane? When?" How would've been the better question, but she chose the indirect path of questioning. She knew he frequently visited the devil's mercy. He'd won The Annual Game twice now. She didn't know what he traded the winner's seal for the second time, but it was clearly enough to buy a plane. Another blow of guilt hit her at how different things were the first time he'd won versus now.

"An year ago. Probably to avoid getting found in situations such as this one."

This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening. Did she miss more dates and break more promises than she would have liked? Yes. But he couldn't just up and go whenever and wherever. He couldn't fly off with zero explanations leaving her worried and confused.

He couldn't just leave like that.

Avery decided to ask Grayson to use his… resources, but he was already on the phone with his PI.

"It's getting late, kid. We should all get some sleep" said Nash, who'd spoken for the first time since the discussion started. Everyone started going back to their rooms. But Grayson followed Avery.

"Avery, wait." She turned around, knowing why he'd stopped her.

"I'm alright, Grayson, really. And he'll come back, I'm sure. This isn't him."

"And this didn't used to be you, either. But here we are."

"What does that mean?"

"It means Jamie isn't just 'coming back.' You're family, Avery. You've been one of us ever since you came here. But we've all seen you two for the last few years" he stopped talking, as if struggling to say what came after.

"You were there without really being there. And I understand, it's not easy, being so young and changing the world. Jamie waited for you and accepted bits and pieces because he loves you too much. But you did break his heart, and you weren't even there to witness it. You didn't even notice until he disappeared."

Avery got to her room and shut the door.

She pulled out the card- the one that Jameson gave her. It was a fairly easy riddle, easy because he might've been thinking she wouldn't waste spend too much time solving it.

You just had to pluck out the unnecessary letters. And when the less-than symbol was inverted and attached to the 3, the kiss symbol looked like an 8.

Rooftop at 8. It said rooftop at 8pm, for a dinner plan. Probably followed by stargazing, as she loved to do. She'd rant about starts and constellations; how she felt slightly humbled staring at them, and Jameson would just listen fondly. She'd taken him for granted, hadn't she? And she could bet she hasn't been much humble at times, either.

But she'd always loved him.

She just hadn't shown it. That was probably one of her biggest regrets.

And then, only in the privacy of her room could she manage to open the box. She could not open it in that bathroom and risk crying in front of everyone. The tears started falling only after she flipped open the lid.

Nestled inside was an emerald-studded ring.

Here's a little Christmas japril drabble✨ Wishing all of you a happy Christmas and a wonderful holiday season! x

Jackson is bouncing up and down.

Jackson doesn't bounce. He paces, and he strides, but Averys don't bounce. Well, Harriet does, but she's 6, and a Kepner-Avery, and from his experience, Kepners definitely bounce up and down.

Coming down the stairs and into the living-room after getting Harriet to bed, April soon discovers the reason for the bouncing. The space around their Christmas tree is completely filled with gifts. Lots of gifts. Waaay too many gifts for a household of three. And she was never the best at maths – biology was her star subject in high-school –, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the ratio of gifts to persons is heavily imbalanced.

"You didn't."

"Didn't what?"

He can act coy all he wants, his smile betrays him.

"This is way too much. She's six! She doesn't need that many things!"

"Okay, first of all, some of these are from my mom. Have you tried telling my mom that she can't spoil her grandchild? If so, how are you still alive?"

"Right, so your mom bought... okay, I stopped counting after twelve boxes. Are you trying to bribe Hattie because she's mad at you for not taking her to Seattle to see Catherine last month?"

"No?"

He observes her as she scans the living-room, brows furrowed, muttering under her breath, knowing she's not really mad but loving that she plays the part.

And it's not like he can fault her for being disconcerted, because just as Jackson Avery doesn't bounce up and down, he also usually doesn't really do Christmas. He'll buy presents, and dress up, and celebrate, but that's usually the extent of his contribution to the holiday season. But this year, he's gone all in and has insisted they do everything. So in the past weeks, they've taken a picture dressed in Christmas pajamas (and he would never admit it, but these things are quite comfortable), they've gone to the Christmas fair down the bloc so Harriet could see Santa, they've been to winter festivals and Christmas markets and even the Fox foundation Christmas party.

Of course, they'd done some of it last year together. But last year, it had been Jackson Avery and April Kepner, separate entities, who had taken Hattie to these activities, and it had left him wanting more than that. Wanting the whole damn thing.

This year, they've been doing these things as the Kepner-Averys, family of three, and he's so grateful he had to do something. He doesn't even care he went overboard.

"She doesn't need that many things! She's going to grow up to be entitled and spoiled and expecting–"

He takes April in his arms, and the way she nestles against his chest tells him everything. That she doesn't believe a word she's saying because she knows what the presents mean. How happy he feels to have his family back. To be able to be woken up by Hattie at dawn so she can open her presents with both of her parents watching. She knows, because she shares the same sentiment.

"I guess I should be glad you didn't buy her a pony like she wanted."

"Well..."

Her glare is so April he can't help laughing.

"No pony, I swear. Didn't fit under the tree anyway."

"You know, you going all out for Christmas like this... You're becoming more and more lik–"

"Don't say I'm like my mom."

They stay embraced for a while, lightly swaying to imaginary music, and he wants to bottle up this moment, this simple, routine, absolutely wonderful moment.

"This is nice, but this is still too much."

"If you think so, then you're really going to hate me when you see how many of these are for you."

"Jackson!!"

Later that night, Harriet joins them in bed, snuggling between them. She explains she's way too excited to sleep, and as he tightens his grasp around his two girls, his grin is so wide his jaw almost hurts.

asadjhglsf I swear that wasn't intentional LOL. I was torn between Parker and Avery, and went with Parker because of the whole park ranger parent name. (It's one of my favorite all time names though :D)

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?) Once you hook them, you hook them. Hermit's a loyal partner, steadfast and unwavering. It's hard to get to that point, and harder for them to actually make the leap. Traditional, too, in the sense they will sit down to have a formal "Do you want to be my partner" conversation. The climb from committed partnership -> marriage is as long of a jaunt. They've never married, would theoretically liked to be married, but do not want to rush it. I'd say it would take 4-5 years of being together, minimum.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?) As I already elaborated on a little, they're an early bird. But let's say they have to show up at work at the ass crack of dawn. Hermit is usually one of the first people, if not the first person to show up for the day. They grab coffee, lock themselves into the weapon vault, and blast jazz music while they go over their morning checklist. By the time more folks roll in, they've been up for hours, cleaning and repairing.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.) They were once bitten by a rattlesnake when they were 16, after tipping a log over, like an idiot. They got an earful from their father on the way to the ER.

So I'd thought of this scenario the other day, where the reader is working at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and she's an ex of Jackson Avery (they're still friends); he goes there because someone close to him gets injured and so as he searches for the reader for help, where he also gets to meet one of the new interns, Daniel Kwan, who happens to be reader's best friend since college (who has feelings for her but she doesn't know) and while to Jackson that is very clear, the reader, on the other hand, has no idea, which makes it weird to see them interact with eachother

I was thinking of something not too sentimental because they're all in good terms but it can end up with a confession or something...🤔🤔 I know you haven't had the opportunity to start the latest season (I totally get it!!! PART ONE // PART TWO

Jackson stalked down the corridor, his eyes sweeping inside every room, as he searched for Y/N. It had been a while since he had been to Grey Sloan and though he used to walk its halls every day he had forgotten how big it was. Though the more he walked the more his hand started aching. He had it held against him, pulled tight under his hoodie as he tried to keep it in a way that didn’t make it ache something rotten. As a sharp shooting pain fluttered up his forearm he stopped looking around but as he paused someone collided with him, hitting him directly in his covered arm and making him wince in agony.

‘I’m so sorry!’ a voice came from behind him. As he whipped around he found a doctor he didn’t recognise standing in front of him. His hands were out in front of him though Jackson doubted he knew how much he had hurt him. Jackson went to tell the man it was alright but he watched as realisation dawned on the man's face, ‘Dr Avery?’ 

‘Yeah,’ Jackson said. 

‘I didn’t know you were coming back. Are you here for a surgery? Or…’ the man trailed off. 

‘Actually, I’m looking for someone,’ Jackson said, ‘have you seen Dr Y/N?’

‘Y/N?’ the man asked. Jackson nodded watching as a glint arose in the man's eye. And if Jackson looked closely he was sure he saw the tinge of a blush on his cheeks before he continued, ‘she’s scrubbed in at the minute. But I’m on her service if there’s something you need.’

‘I just need her er-’

‘Dr Kwan,’ the man said, ‘Daniel Kwan.’

‘Right,’ Jackson said trying to recall where he had heard that name before, ‘well can you find her for me?’ 

‘Sure, what shall I tell her?’

‘Tell her I’ll be waiting in the pit for her,’ Jackson said as he felt another wave of pain come over him. Before Daniel could reply he stalked off back towards the pit. He needed painkillers.

Jackson was sitting in a trauma room scrolling quietly through his phone as he listened to the hubbub going on outside the room. Since his new ally had continued his search he had been able to come down to the pit and get checked in. He didn’t officially have privileges but the nurses didn’t seem to mind following his instructions. He allowed them to take some blood and do a quick X-ray which he looked over himself, confirming his own suspicions of a broken hand but he didn’t interfere anymore. That's why he wanted Y/N. After all her speciality was orthopaedics. 

As he heard her dulcet tones outside the room he sat up a little straighter and placed his phone on his lap. The doors swooshed open and she came in in a flurry. Her hair was piled up onto the top of her head and Jackson could see her scrub cap squashed into her scrub pocket. Standing at her side was Daniel.

‘Jackson!’ she said excitedly though her face fell as she took in his mangled hand, ‘what the hell!?’ 

She darted to his side, her hand holding his gently, wincing as he hissed in pain. The nurses had given him something to take the edge off but that didn’t mean that her mauling with him wouldn’t make his toes curl. 

‘What happened?’ she asked. 

‘Had a run-in with a power tool,’ he shrugged. 

‘Your hands mangled!’ she said.

‘Hardly,’ he said nodding towards the X-rays on the board. Y/N glanced at them but continued to survey his hand a little longer. Daniel walked towards them. 

‘He’s right. He’s only got slight fractures to his scaphoid and trapezium.’

‘Maybe,’ she said, ‘but this gash goes through to muscle if not the ligament. And this is a million-dollar hand.’

‘Which is why I came here,’ Jackson said. 

‘Well I’d send you to our fabulous head of plastics but he’s no longer here,’ Y/N smirked. Jackson chuckled. 

‘Which is why I went second best,’ he said. Y/N swatted him on his good arm. Jackson chuckled but he didn’t fail to notice that Daniel’s eyes narrowed a little as he watched the pair of them. 

‘Blue,’ Y/N said as she moved over to the Xrays, ‘order an MRI stat for Jackson’s hand. I want decent images before we plan anything. Then phone the OR and tell them we need to bump my next surgery.’

‘But Mrs Gleeson-’

‘Can wait,’ she said waving him off. Daniel smiled tightly and nodded. Jackson watched them closely as she rattled off instructions. 

‘I thought you didn’t do special treatment,’ Daniel said folding his arms across his chest. 

‘I don’t. But as I said this morning, Mrs Gleeson still has some swelling to her ankle so whilst we can do her manipulation today it won’t hurt to push her back a few hours. Or even a day. And besides, I might not play favourites but I know someone who does. So it might be better that we get Jackson here in and out before Catherine Fox gets a whiff of what’s happening. Now, are you going to do as I asked or have you still got a problem with how I prioritise my patients?’ Y/N said. Her tone was nice but Jackson could hear the air of authority she was speaking with. Daniel shook his head and left the room. 

Jackson watched as she scanned over his X-rays one more time and then sat down on a stool beside him setting up a sterile tray. He said nothing as she took his hand in hers, assessing the damage of the deep gash in his hand. She started to clean the outer edge of the wound and feeling that twinging sensation coming back Jackson decided to speak.

‘So the new interns are pretty outspoken this year huh?’ Jackson said. Y/N looked up at him confused then as her eyebrows broke apart she said, ‘what Blue? Nah, he’s not that bad.’

‘He called you out in front of a patient,’ Jackson reasoned.

‘He called me out in front of you,’ she quipped back, ‘you’re hardly John Doe. And anyway I get what he means. You know I hate special treatment.’

‘And yet you came right away for me,’ Jackson smirked. 

‘For your million dollar hand,’ she corrected, ‘and the fact that your mother will find out about this soon enough and I’d rather not have her interrogate me while I work.’ 

‘Hmm,’ Jackson said. Her movements slowed as she looked at him curiously. 

‘What?’

‘Nothing,’ he said.

‘No come on,’ she said knowing he was holding back, ‘spit it out.’

‘It’s just you seem different with him. Any other intern you’d have chewed them out.’

‘Well I haven’t been friends with them since childhood,’ she shrugged. 

‘You’ve known him since childhood?’ Jackson asked as his mind scanned back for any recollection that she might have mentioned him to him before. 

‘Yeah,’ she said, ‘he’s an old family friend. Our moms are close. He’s not too much younger than me but he’s had some personal stuff so he’s only just catching up that’s why I recommended the programme to him.’

‘You’ve never mentioned him,’ he said.

‘We lost touch a little. I barely have time to see the people in this hospital never mind outside of it,’ she said. Then a memory clicked in Jackson’s head.

‘He’s in that picture of you and your high school friends,’ he said, ‘the one in your hallway.’

‘And here’s me thinking you didn’t notice any of the little things when we were together,’ she chuckled. 

‘Hey I noticed enough,’ Jackson smirked which was followed by a wince as she hit a sore spot. 

‘Sorry,’ she mumbled returning to her work.

‘It’s okay,’ Jackson said, adding in a low voice, ‘and anyway, I noticed he likes you.’ 

‘Blue?’ she baulked.

‘Yeah,’ he said. 

‘No way,’ she said, ‘we’ve been friends forever.’

‘And?’ 

‘And,’ she started, ‘and, well I’d know. He’s Blue. The same Blue he’s always been. He doesn’t like me.’

She fell silent for a moment. Panic flooded into the pit of Jackson’s stomach as he watched her work fearing he’d scared her. 

‘Y/N,’ he said, ‘I’m not teasing you. I’m being serious.’

‘Jackson,’ she said quietly.

‘I’m just saying,’ he said moving his hand so she was forced to look up at him, ‘remember I’ve been there.’ 

She watched him for a moment and then went back to her work.  Trying to ignore the niggle in the back of her mind.

‘That went well,’ Y/N said as she slipped her scrub cap off of her head. She walked into the prep room and knocked the tap on, getting ready to de-scrub. She had just operated on Jackson’s hand. Fortunately, it wasn’t too complicated and she had even managed that Jackson could stay awake throughout assisting somewhat. And though she was still wrestling with what Jackson had told her she had allowed Daniel to assist.

‘Yeah,’ Daniel said as he stood beside her, ‘I’ve never had someone back seat drive whilst doing a surgery though.’

‘Jackson knows what he’s doing,’ she said. He seemed irked. And she didn’t know why…though she suspected, ‘and he’s an expert in his field.’

‘I guess,’ he mumbled. 

‘Do you not like him?’ she said looking up at him. She wiped her wet hands on a piece of paper towel and tossed it in the trash as she turned around to lean against the sink. 

‘What?’ Daniel asked drying off his own hands. 

‘Jackson,’ she said, ‘you seem to have a problem with him.’

‘I guess after all the delays I’ve had seeing someone use their name to get whatever they want annoys me,’ he said going to walk away. Y/N placed a hand on his shoulder stopping him. He turned to face her. 

‘Jackson didn’t use any name. I mean his mother owns everything in this damn place. If he was throwing money around he could’ve had Link. But he wanted me. Because he’s my friend. He knows how I work. And I know how much he would value me not making a fuss or a scene. I didn’t help him because he’s an Avery. I did it because he’s my friend, in fact, he used to be more than that,’ she said. 

‘You two?’ Daniel said his eyebrows knitting together. 

‘Yeah,’ she said quietly.

‘I didn’t know you two used to y’know.’

‘Well that’s all old news,’ she said, ‘but he’s still my friend.’

They fell silent for a moment as Daniel nodded taking in her words. And then without warning, Y/N felt the urge to mention what Jackson had told her before. She didn’t know why but she couldn’t stop herself, ‘in fact he seems to think I’ve got something else going on,’ she said turning away so he couldn’t see her face, ‘he thinks me and you are an item. Isn’t that crazy?’ 

She chuckled to herself but as she heard nothing in response worry grew inside her and she turned to find him watching her stony-faced. 

‘I mean, that’s crazy right?’ she said, ‘Blue?’ 

‘What do you want me to say?’ he sighed looking away from her. 

‘I-’

‘Do you want me to say you’re right? That the idea of us is ludicrous? Or do you want me to tell you something else, something different,’ he said coming towards her. Even hours into his shift he still smelled amazing. He reached out and moved a strand of hair from her face causing a tingle to run down her spine. 

‘Blue,’ she whispered, ‘why don’t you just tell me the truth?’ 

‘Because I don’t know if you want the truth,’ he said simply, ‘but the idea of us…isn’t that crazy to me.’ 

Before she could respond the doors swooshed open behind them and he broke apart from her watching as the scrub staff filed in, ready to get themselves cleaned up. He smiled at her sadly and left the room. 

‘Everything okay?’ Tiffany, a scrub nurse, said to her with concern. 

‘Yeah,’ Y/N smiled weakly, ‘I just need to tell him something.’ 

And with that, she bolted out of the room to find Blue.

8. Who is a morning person? Who is a night owl?

I would best describe Avery as someone who was born to be a night person and forced to be a morning person. As he was raised on a ranch, getting up at the asscrack of dawn was the expectation and thus something he simply had to get used to. Nowadays he gets up early out of habit, even if he doesn’t have to. I have a strong suspicion that on a lot of mornings, they wake up early and laze on each other in bed for a while before anybody actually gets up. Maybe they talk about the dreams they had, what they have planned for the day, laugh at the way they sleepily half-mumble things.

13. Stay home/go-out? What are their date nights like?

Avery loves to go out for date nights. It doesn’t always have be a big occasion necessarily, he enjoys things like karaoke at bars, rodeos, brief camping trips. He’s a very lively, energetic person and likes to share that energy. I think they have a lot of fun going out together. He loves to dance with her even if he isn’t incredibly good at it. If they’re in the mood for something a little quieter and more private, a horseback ride down to a creek for a little picnic.

16. Who hogs the covers?

Avery’s body temp runs notoriously high on account of his mutations, depending on the weather he’s sometimes known to sleep without a blanket at all. He’s also happy to be a human heating pad for her.

24. Sleeping/cuddling positions? (Big spoon, little spoon, etc.)?

He likes to be the big spoon so he can curl up around her. It’s that little hint of protective instinct, holding her close so she feels secure. Likes to nuzzle his face into the back of her neck, which is a little bit of a comfort and security thing for him— Avery’s mutations make him an extremely sensory person, heightened sense of smell means that he tends to memorize the scent of people close to him. Something like a partner’s scent tends to be very comforting. I can also very much see him lying on his back with her head on his chest being a common one.

35. What are their tastes in music?

Avery likes lively music and twangy guitar. Folk, country, little bit of rock n roll. Not much of a jazz or big band guy. Probably listens to the Mojave Music Radio more often than New Vegas Radio, for example. Loves a little Spanish guitar around a campfire.

Harry Potter Headcanons for Rule of Neutrality II

Charity Burbage

unparalleled energy & happiness. typical Hufflepuff with her genuine sweetness + willingness to cut people who hurt her friends. 

she’s 10/10 supportive of anyone’s fashion endeavors. when Lucia wears some clashing colors—Charity is right there next to her, strutting in the same colors. Snape & Sinistra pretend they don’t know them.

she’s also a half-blood like Snape, but she was raised in a more wizen-like household. that’s the reason she took an interest in Muggle Studies—to learn more about the other side of her family. 

she almost always has a smile on her face—like she’s under a constant cheering charm. but when she’s with Snape, Lucia, and Sinistra, she can kind of drop it with them. 

her dorm room somehow was the get-together for Lucia & Sinistra. so many secrets were spilled within the silk canopy between the three. other Hufflepuffs got used to seeing a Slytherin & Ravenclaw leave at dawn after a rather hefty gossip session.

Sinistra was her bi-awakening. when she saw the transfer student in her astronomy class, it was all over. the calm way she answered their professor’s questions, the intricate bronze bracelets, the way she smiled at the sky—period, gone, Cupid’s taken her. 

Aurora Sinistra

she’s originally a transfer student from Uagadou b/c her parents ended up being diplomats to the British Ministry of Magic. she was already considered gifted in the realm of astronomy. she knew quite a bit in the magical realm but expanded her Muggle-aspect knowledge with Charity.

the emotional support pillar of the group. Snape had his own problems; Lucia had her volatile ups and downs; Charity exuded happiness but not stability; thus Sinistra became the sturdy pillar. 

she was well-versed in history as well, often debating topics with Lucia, offering opinions that did not appear in the history books she read. a consistent bibliophile along with Snape. 

she was an early bird—no matter how late she slept, she’d always wake up at seven on the dot. unfortunately, the rest of her friends would be sound asleep unless they’d pulled an all-nighter (which wasn’t uncommon).

Ravenclaw suited her well, but she was more grounded than most except when staring up at the night sky. astronomy x metallic color scheme??

her favorite birthday surprise is when everyone snuck up to the Astronomy Tower to stargaze and have a picnic under the stars. it was doubly funny when Avery dared Lucia about her futuristic knowledge of the solar system, which caused a mini explosion of nebulae conjured from her wand. they were invariably caught by Flitwick.

Writing Realistic Future Names

You writing something with aliens? Dystopian future? Doctor Who fic? 'Humans are the Weird ones' post? Need names?

Are you, like me, tired of dystopian names which are normal names written dumbly, or futuristic settings with normal names (looking at you Star Trek), or absolute nonsense? Well here's some cool ways to get futuristic names that make sense.

Celeb and Fandom Names

Names like Draco, Hermione, Sherlock, Mycroft, Enola, Benedict, Castiel, Destiel, Jensen, Danneel, Spock, Katniss, Primrose, Teyla, Elsa, Anakin, Loki, Constantine, Jinx, Rhianna, Catra, Adora, Zendaya, Halsey, Misha/Mischa, Korra, Katara, Toph, Cardi, Mabel, Ariel, Whoopi, Madonna, Oprah, Usain etc are gonna become increasingly popular, like they already are, even more so once enough time passes that people stop associating them with certain pieces of media or certain famous people.

Other Language Names

Historically, in different times different countries have a total global influence, and that will effect names. Right now, it's the USA. During the Rennasaince, it was France. We're pretty close to having Japan and other Asian cultures become the next big influence, what with all the anime everyone globally is watching/reading. Now, depending on how far in the future you're writing, add global influence from other countries. Dutch names like Marjolein and Ninthe and Brechtje, pronounced to the accent of the setting of your story. Try to go with cultures who have potential to be big: don't choose some small country somewhere that nobody has ever heard of. Go for Native American or Mexican or Russian or Japanese or Egyptian.

Surnames

Use surnames for first names! A lot of names that used to be surnames are now gender neutral first names, such as Avery. Use surnames! Johnson, Harris, Smith. All of it!

Strange Shortenings

Shorten traditional names in unntraditional ways! Richard always gets shortened to Richie or (for some unfathomable reason) Dick. What about Char? Chard? Those are kick-ass names. Chris for Christian? Cancelled. It's Tian now. Cathy for Catherine? Wrong. Let's make it Rhine. Amy from Amelia? Let's screw with that, turn it into Ammy. You get it.

Pretty Words

People tend to call their children by name of something pretty, and then those names exist untill after the words have lost their meaning. Right now, most of our names are Biblical Hebrew and Latin and Old English/German. We're at the point where slowly, child names are gonna mean things in today's language again. It's already happening a little; Dawn and Hope and Autumn... but give me children called Justice and Fauna and Prime and Amethyst and Earth. Ash and Queen and Happy and Light and Feline. Give me twins called Sapphire and Sapphic, like we call our twins Catherine and Caithlynn or Tim / Timothy and Tom / Thomas now.

Spelling

Spelling is going to shift with the years, and you want your names to reflect this. This one pretty much only works for at least a hundred years into the future. Here's some guidelines of what spelling might become:

t / th = d

s / k = c

ee = i

a = e (sometimes)

y = i (sometimes)

ks = x

o = oe

h = h (add more often)

Examples: Katherine = Caderine, Timothee = Dimoedhi, Blake = Bleke, Susanna = Cucennah etc. Of course, you can do it your own way, or only use some of these guidelines if you want. Feel free to play around with it. If you chose to go for this, keep in mind that there will still be some names in old spelling, just like we still have towns called Kooperdeck and stuff like that. This technique sounds dangerously close to the "say names while your mouth is full of oreos" technique that some dystopian writers use that I hate, but because it's based on logic and what the future might actually be like, as long as you use this in moderation, it'll sound really cool. Out of these examples, Caderine and Bleke are better to use than Dimoedhi and Cucennah, because "Timothee" and "Susanna" have been pretty much lost. If that's what you're looking for though, then that's your thing, I just personally like to be able to see realistic names and eventhough those names are based on logical prediction, they sound made-up.

Gender

You need to pay attention to the percieved gender of names. You can use names that are gendered or slightly gendered right now as gender neutral names. But if you're inventing new names, do pay attention to whatever percieved gender they have in your universe. You can use Chard and Jensen for girls, Caderine and Sapphire for guys. In fact, you should definetly use names like Loki and Earth and Rhine as non-binary names.

Disclaimer: I haven't studied history, and most things I reference here as 'historically, x has happened and is therefore likely to repeat in the future' are just things I've picked up on and heard about and logically deduced, and they could be wrong. However, I consider myself very smart and I really really like history, so you should consider this as a fairly accurate depection. Just know that if someone who actually studied or researched this topic says I'm wrong then I'm probably wrong.
