making a pirate au is the most fun i’ve had with rp in a while

i’m finishing up awakening and have more thoughts (shocking) on astoria during this timeline. all character-specific interactions are, of course, subject to change to respect the preferences of writing partners who are writing those characters! but here we go —

she’s great to have around the vigil because she’s probably both at least a little familiar with the layout, given that her father was one of howe’s vassals, and she’ll be able to identify and give background on a lot of the avvar connections. (which, just a little sidebar, it is SO cool to see how much the avvar have maintained over the thousand-plus years from the last time they held the vigil to when we meet them more thoroughly in inquisition, which speaks to the strength of their oral traditions especially, considering that the environmental conditions in the frostbacks aren’t really lending themselves to preserving written records.)

she probably knows nathaniel in passing, or at the very very least, knows of him. it’ll create an interesting tension for her, and the tension between nathaniel and the warden will reflect her own internal turmoil as she tries to make sense of whether she wants to live her life as a lowlander, with her father’s family, or if she wants to live her life as an avvar, with her grandfather and uncle. nathaniel represents everything about her life in amaranthine — social obligations and nobility and aristocracy, the struggle to determine how to use one’s privilege and whether to use it, the pseudo-sacred nature of traditions. the warden represents everything about her life in the frostbacks — emphasis on a larger community, the equalizing nature of survival in a brutal setting, the absolute lack of permanence in all things.

in an official capacity she’s probably acting as an assistant, essentially, for the seneschal: she knows the warden, she knows the city, she can liaise between everyone when necessary. she can navigate the nobles, and she can help the warden try to bridge that gap. in an unofficial capacity she’s hanging out with her buddies, but also, she’s kind of cataloguing the avvar presence in amaranthine. it makes her feel more herself, and less like there has to be a single choice made about who she is and what her identity is.

she asks anders to help teach her some magic. primarily, healing. during this time she gets better and more consistent with her healing. i think, though, that this is also when her healing starts to have a potentially negative impact on her, because her magic is so erratic and hard to control. for instance: the magic feels like holding her fingertips to a fire, and she eventually loses feeling in the very tips of her fingers. because her magic is erratic i think it often works without her knowledge or awareness, and so she’s often healing small injuries in her own body — which is great in theory, except that these are superficial healings. her pain tolerance gets really fucked up, and she stops recognizing how seriously she might be injured unless someone else is there to check or point it out.

i also think she takes care of ser pounce after anders leaves. i like to imagine astoria sitting on the walls with pounce in her lap at night. she’ll pick up any other stray cats she finds, too.

at the start of awakening, astoria’s cut her hair — not very short, but it goes from near-waist-length to an inch or two past her shoulders. she wears her hair down more often, rather than in braids like she did during the blight.

during astoria’s personal quest in origins, she’ll have revealed to the warden that, as per avvar belief, blighted bodies cannot be taken to the lady of the skies, and therefore the blighted person will wander aimlessly for eternity. on a practical level she knows this is to prevent spreading the blight; on a personal level it’s a deep and persistent fear. that fear returns during awakening. during this time, she also starts to think more about her experience at the resting place of the sacred ashes, and questioning whether or not she believes in the maker and andraste. it’s a period of serious self-evaluation.

finally, a note on my dragon age verses in general — i do have default world states and a default ship for this verse. unless we’re leaving something open for a ship to potentially develop, or i’m writing with another hero of ferelden / cousland, astoria is involved with and, by inquisition, married to ellis cousland. if not ellis, the default warden is my own — alix tabris — unless we’ve plotted otherwise, and the default hawke is also my own — amara, red warrior — unless plotted otherwise. astoria leaves hawke in the fade. i am always super open to developing ships or working with a different world state, so please don’t be shy about suggesting it! this is just a general note on this au.

How does Avvar Amayian handle challenges to power dynamics both outside of the bedroom and in it? Are there any exceptions to this?

It depends really on who it is. Outside of the bedroom, with rivals, he highly curtails their influence by negotiating and threatening other influential members of the clan. If need be, he kills them in a duel. If not, severely maims them so he doesn’t have to deal with a bloodfeud from the rival’s family.

In the bedroom, with a lover, he is highly amused by it. If he really likes then, he’ll let them have some hold of power such as choosing the tempo and position. It’s a sign of his favor, and trust. If its someone he doesn’t really like, he just pins them with one arm and growls a threat at them that they’re playing a very dangerous game, and he’ll let it slide once.

Just like Yoongi isn't actually an owl, even if he does stay up all night and sometimes hoot to fuck with their roommates. But this is a real love story, even if a slightly odd one.

There are so many Avvar!Cullen aus where they just invent an entire new character that looks like Cullen in order to fetishize shitty tropes about indigenous people

Yeah exactly and it's like, why this guy specifically. I mean the part where the already kinda iffily written fictional indigenous group is somehow made 10x more offensive than it is in canon and then fetishized is unfortunately very par for the course & unsurprising, but it is weird to me that Cullen/Inquisitor is the only pairing this happens with. None of the other LIs get Avaar AUs/"oh noo we have to do Weird Avaar Marriage Custom because of, reasons"-fic, at least not that I've seen, and honestly I don't understand why. How was the Avaar-Cullen connection made in the first place? Am I even sure I want to understand.

Aisling would differ from canon to AUs.

In canon she has little love for the Chantry, and after Trespasser, celebrations even in elven style left a VERY sour mouth. She'll pick some celebrations from the Avvar, and found some solace. Her favourite festivities are Solstices. She'd love Summer Solstice best because of the fruit: first peaches, long day, there are puppies around, it's warm. She's a spring girl, but there it's her time to shine. She'll teach her child that on First-Day, the Dread Wolf brings gifts to good children (like Santa. Out of pettiness), and that will be a close second best. She doesn't like winter and hates the cold, but it's usually the time Dorian can manage to escape and come visit, so everyone gathers, Niamh gets overtly excited, it's a fun time.

In the DadWolf AU (tag in link, and infos in the Masterpost) she'd LOVE Halloween. Halloween will be a huge event in the house (art on the link): namely, Varric and Solas will go all the way to invent group costumes, Varric will spend way too much money for them, they'll involve friends. Halloween is a very serious event for them, and organisation usually starts as August comes in. She, Dorian and Cullen never got rid of being called The Three Musketeers from that one time, when they were children, when Solas and Varric managed to lure him in the group costume (Solas was Richelieu, Varric the Queen). And they went around all together all the time, so. Autumn is not her favourite season, but she'll favour Halloween for the atmosphere and the memories. and organising costumes all together.

Raina: Satinalia. Any chance of doing ruckus and shenanigans around town and she'll jump right in. Garrett: All Soul's Day. Pumpkins are in season, it's autumn, the nature is coloured prettily. The Veil is thin and you can meet the most interesting spirits. Radha: First Day with all the family gathered. Alyra: Satinalia too. Again, under the cold façade she's silly, and Satinalia is the time she can dress up and go and do some ruckus without pretending to be the Arlessa/Warden-Commander, get in a tavern and drink and sing come on Nathaniel get that stick out of your ass and get dressed. Max: Her parents were fishermen, and she grew up mostly with her maternal grandma, from Livorno. She loves Ferragosto the best! In Italy, there are fireworks (less than on New Year's Eve, generally the cities organize shows), you gather with friends and family for a pic nic or a barbecue. It's peak summer, so it was usually, for her, a picnic by the sea, lots of food and merriment, and watching the horse race in Siena on extranet.

Hi! What do you think would happen if, in an au where the conclave didn't explode, Niamh was found because the new Inquisition wanted her to join it's ranks? Leliana and the others agree that she is a good choice for whatever role they need of her, maybe a commander to replace Cullen or something like that, and thus people are sent out to dig into rumors of her whereabouts.

She's ultimately found completely by accident at some point.

If the explosion never happens with the Conclave, then that means Divine Justinia is still alive. Given she was originally meant to be Corypheus' sacrifice in order for him to obtain the Anchor, that also means he likely still has the Orb of Destruction in his possession. Following along that line of thought, he could attempt to go after Justinia again, which would certainly warrant getting more protection in the form of a certain Elementalist. 😏 ("A monster capable of our world’s destruction beckons us at our gates, so…” She idly flexed her hand, conjuring lightning which interweaved itself between her fingers. “…better to let another monster of equal caliber face it.” - Niamh, chapter 13 of OtSttCA)

Of course, if the Breach never forms in this AU, then no Herald of Andraste would exist, which means the role of Inquisitor could more or less go to anyone.

While I can see Niamh accepting the role of Commander in this AU per your suggestion, I can't foresee her wanting to be the overall leader of the Inquisition, especially if you recall her reaction regarding it in chapter 17. That said, I can't imagine it would be easy trying to find or convince Niamh to actually join the Inquisition.

Per OtSttCA's timeline, Niamh came back to Ferelden to see if the Divine could succeed in securing an end to the Templar-Mage war. Since the Conclave isn't destroyed, I can only imagine it would still take a bit longer to making that happen. Niamh likely stays in the country with the intention to oversee its progress, but she largely keeps herself out of sight of the Chantry's many watchful eyes.

I could see her trying to lay low in the Frostback Basin with the Avvar. Niamh probably came across one of their hunting groups by accident when they're set upon by a pack of wyverns—a hearty food source in such unforgiving terrain but still remarkably dangerous beasts overall. Niamh subdues the wyverns with her magic, and in the aftermath of the battle, she checks on the condition of the Avvar hunters. Once she's assured they're alright, and upon discovering she's so close to Avvar territory though, she had every intention of leaving out of respect, but Thane Svarah "Sun-Hair" invites her into Stone-Bear Hold as an honored guest.

Niamh's inner scholar would likely enjoy learning more about the Avvar, so she truly takes the time to study their customs and beliefs along with the various ways in which the mages and Augurs use their magic.

Leliana and Cassandra find themselves in the Frostback Basin to investigate Niamh's whereabouts, especially since there were sightings of her helping with a negotiation on the behalf of an Avvar trader. They could also be in the area to investigate what happened to Ameridan, leader to the previous Inquisition who disappeared several Ages ago. Honestly, I think the entire premise of the Jaws of Hakkon DLC would be an interesting way to introduce Niamh's recruitment into the Inquisition! ...Of course, getting her to agree to join is another matter entirely. 😅

Following the aftermath of the Blight, Niamh had no intention of fighting for any further wars ever again, but that's essentially what Justinia and her respective Hands are asking her to do. Bear in mind that Justinia only planned to reform the Inquisition if peace couldn't be reached between the Templars and the mages. If Niamh's being asked to join it, then it's because they're asking her to be an active military commander to what is otherwise a religious organization—the same one that's taught her all her life to hate herself for what she is.

Leliana wants Niamh to join because their only other viable Commander candidate is Cullen, who she feels is too controversial a figure due to his history as Knight-Captain of Kirkwall's disastrous Circle. Knowing that Cullen is even in the Inquisition causes Niamh to balk even harder about joining, much to Leliana's dismay.

Niamh returns back to Stone-Bear Hold when she hears word that the Jaws of Hakkon are planning to move against Thane Svarah's group. Knowing it could be their only chance to get Niamh to reconsider her decision to join, Leliana offers Cassandra and herself as aid (along with a small contingent of her own agents) for the chance to have Niamh at least hear them out again. Niamh—not wanting Stone-Bear Hold to suffer due to her stubbornness should they be overrun without help—reluctantly agrees.

Per the events of the DLC, they do end up figuring out what's going on, which means Ameridan's fate and actual identity is finally revealed. At such a revelation, Leliana steels herself for what she assumes is Niamh's absolute refusal to join the Inquisition. To her surprise, she does the opposite. ("Make no mistake. Becoming the Inquisition's Commander never would have been my first choice, but the Chantry hid the fact that Ameridan was an elven mage for centuries, Leliana. If nothing else, this entire incident has shown me the lengths such an institution will go to in to hide anything they deem as remotely inconvenient to their rhetoric. I don't know what type of history your Divine intends to carve out, but I will not allow my people to become yet another scapegoat just so that the Chantry might escape more hurtful truths.")

So Niamh joins as a reluctant member of Justinia's War Council, but despite her reservations, she gives her absolute all as their lead strategist and Commander, especially once Corypheus finally makes his appearance. Also, thinking about Niamh in full Commander regalia is doing wonderful things to my mind right now... 🤤

Since Niamh's not out doing active fieldwork like she would be as Inquisitor, that means she'll be at Skyhold more often, which would allow her and Leliana to actually catch up with one another more easily.

Other than that, I imagine most of the in-game decisions will still play out in much the same way it would in OtSttCA.

At this point, I don't know who's going to end up as the Inquisitor for this group. My canon Hawke might be a fun character to play off of Niamh. 😂 I think this could still be an interesting AU to write though. Not my best work so far, but I hope you enjoy my thoughts on this!
