imagine ur doing 90 in a 55, ur water just broke, u arent even trying to get to the hospital about it youre trying to get away from your ex man (who is also your girl) who is also the fucking traffic cop trying to arrest you for speeding and also some unrelated stuff (the only reason he hasnt called a full on car chase is because he thinks you're pregnant with his kid) (its not his kid, you specifically picked his boss as your sperm donor to make said boss’s life hell) and you have a pretty good idea about what the last couple hours of commander wake's life was like

Got a kofi to draw what I want so I decided to do a comic! I always really loved this scene from Nona the Ninth for some reason (I love Wake) and so here’s an interpretation of it. I challenged myself to only take the same time on it as I would a single page kofi (tho I still went over a bit) so it’s more painterly than usual, but it was a cool thing to try and do :>

Thinking about Wake's last words rn. She claims in Harrow that she died smug and satisfied with her work, enjoying getting to die in front of Gideon the First, who couldn't. But when the Ninth house brought her spirit back from the dead, she /screamed/ for him. It was all she would do before she ran off to go hide in her bones! She screamed for him in such a way that the nuns apparently thought she was screaming for her /baby/ and therefore that the baby must be named Gideon. Which makes me so insane. What was she thinking? What was she feeling in that moment? Was she afraid? Was she angry? Did she want him to come down here so she could kick his ass? Did she want him to save her?
The fact that the nuns assumed that baby Gideon was who she was screaming for makes it sound almost like she was afraid for /him./ Was she afraid he would tell John? Was she afraid he had gone too far and would break his own heart against his sense of duty? Did he have some other plan we don't yet know about?
Like, from a more meta standpoint here, Muir could have had Wake say a lot of different things here. But all she does is call out for him. It's so maddeningly opaque. But it's just like them. It's not actually about what she's feeling - if she loves him or hates him or fears him - she just can't bear for the conversation to be over. Now that she's free of the mission she had in life, the only thing she wants is to talk to him again.

TLT fans: did you guys know about the real Wake? I hadn't heard about her until we covered World War II in my world civ class this semester
Nancy Grace Augusta Wake (1912-2011) was a covert operative who was at the top of the Nazi's most wanted list in WW2, nicknamed "The White Mouse" for her ability to repeatedly evade capture. She was born in New Zealand with Māori heritage, grew up in Australia, and joined the Resistance after traveling to Europe and witnessing the harsh treatment of Jews in Vienna by the Nazis
Tumblr media
Wake worked in the Pat O'Leary Line escape network until her Resistance organization was compromised by the Germans in 1942. After that she fled on foot across the Pyrenees—with several close calls that she escaped by flirting with German soldiers—and made her way to England to join the Special Operations Executive. She was part of a three person team codenamed "Freelance" which parachuted into occupied France. During this operation she got stuck in a tree after her parachute became tangled in its branches. The local Resistance leader who found her reportedly said “I hope that all the trees in France bear such beautiful fruit this year" to which she replied "Cut out that French bullshit and get me out of this tree"
While working in the Freelance operation Wake once biked 500 km (310 mi) without stopping in the span of 72 hours across Nazi territory to retrieve a new radio and codes after her team's were destroyed in a Gestapo raid. Without this feat, Freelance would not have been able to communicate with London and there would have been no more supply drops to support their Resistance organization. During the war she was also part of a raid which destroyed the Gestapo headquarters in Montluçon, in which she reportedly killed a Nazi sentry with her bare hands to prevent him from raising an alarm
Wake's fellow operatives described her as "a real Australian bombshell. Tremendous vitality, flashing eyes. Everything she did, she did well. She was an excellent shot, excelled at fieldcraft and put the men to shame by her cheerful spirit and strength of character." "She is the most feminine woman I know until the fighting starts. Then she is like five men." "We both came to the conclusion that she was 10 times the man I would ever be"
By the time of her death in 2011, Wake had been awarded the George Medal by Britain; the Medal of Freedom by the United States; the Médaille de la Résistance, the Croix de Guerre (x3), and the Légion d’Honneur by France; and the Badge in Gold by New Zealand. Due to a complicated relationship with Australia, she originally refused to accept any awards from the Australian government, saying that they could "stick their medals where the monkey stuck his nuts." In 2004, however, she accepted the honor of Companion of the Order of Australia as well

Commander Awake Remembrance of These Valiant Dead Kia Hua Ko Te Pa Snap Back To Reality Oops There Goes Gravity
It sounds funny and memey and at first glance, we see that it's preserving three pieces of cultural history. Let's go deeper.
Awake Remembrance of These Valiant Dead
From Shakespeare's Henry V, but also saying that we remember everyone who died because of you.
Kia Hua Ko Te Pai
From New Zealand's national anthem God Defend New Zealand, meaning "Let Goodness Flourish".
John is Māori and he speaks Te Reo Māori, as evidenced by him naming his daughter Kiriona (the Te Reo Māori translation of Gideon in the bible), and his friends saying he looked like a Māori pink panther.
John, a self-proclaimed God, failed to defend New Zealand. And he cannot Let Goodness Flourish. Making him say it aloud is massive fuck you.
Snap Back To Reality, Oops There Goes Gravity
Obviously a funny reference to Eminem's Lose Yourself, but there's two parts here.
"Snap Back To Reality" as in. Stop running from this and own up to what you did. This isn't a fun fairy tale. Humanity is fractured and broken because of you.
"Oops There Goes Gravity" as in. You destroyed the earth and MADE US FLEE INTO SPACE.
Making Jod say this aloud is a massive fuck you because her entire name

also I know we meme on wake's full name but imo it's like that for more reasons than just a joke. it's about how a lyric removed from its context is removed from its meaning, and how that's something worth mourning. it's about names as a vehicle for the preservation of a lost culture. it's about oral history as a tremendous ten thousand year long force. it's about how no lyric is empty of cultural meaning and a song by eminem is as culturally vital as a line from shakespeare or from a national anthem, especially when your business is grieving the culture that created it

thinking about how Wake’s only word to Gideon is “Goodbye”. thinking about how Wake saw Harrow with Gideon’s eyes and spared her. did she know that it wasn’t Harrow? thinking about how Wake had shot Mercy but spared Harrow/Gideon. did she watch Harrow go through the worst year and a half of her life and decide not to kill her? despite hating the nine houses and everything they stand for? rotating this interaction in my mind.
.....you know. I had assumed she must know, since she spent so long carrying out an affair with Pyrrha and Big G. She would know dead cavaliers aren't always gone, and she would know to check the eyes, and she got a good look at Gideon while holding her at gunpoint. She had spent months stalking Harrow through her mind palace, and in Cytherea's body, and would know the way she was holding the sword was wrong. Which is to say she was holding it right.
But.
It's ambiguous how aware she was of what happened around her when she was in the sword, so it's ambiguous how much she knows about Gideon and Harrow, and it was dark on the Mithraeum. It's possible she did think she was talking to Harrow. She was contemptuous of Harrow in the River, but we know for a fact she's the type to come to respect a worthy opponent.
I still think she knew it was Gideon. She knew she was speaking to her daughter, and not the wizard whose body she was wearing. But I really can't be sure.
