so i'm here to discuss the mostly undisscussed: gorgeous's gay subtext

this song is riddled with a story that i believe could be interpreted as the singer being in love with their same-gender best friend

okay so let's break this up line by line through the whole song:

"you should take it as a compliment that i got drunk and made fun of the way you talk" okay pretty ambiguous, but close-friends-type banter. that's the kind of thing you would only do to your bestie!

"you should think about the consequence of your magnetic field being a little too strong" first of all, magnetic field could be referencing a person's gaydar and ability to attract gay people. second of all, CONSEQUENCE!! why would there be consequences! i mean a bf is brought up later, but he seems fine with the singer's behavior! so why would there be consequences? because it's GAY AND THEY WILL BE EXCLUDED!!

"and i got a bf he's older than us he's in the club doing idk what" this is awful sketchy!!! like i don't believe that at all!!! there is no detail on the supposed bf and i don't think he exists! this could just be an excuse the singer makes in their head to not get involved with their bestie!

"you're so cool it makes me hate you so much" why does the singer hate themself from finding their bestie 'cool'??? CAUSE THEY HAVE A CRUSH ON THEIR BESTIE AND HATE THEMSELVES FOR IT CAUSE OF INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA!

"whiskey on ice, sunset and vine" not really much, could be the link between internalized homophobia and alcoholism

"you've ruined my life by not being mine"!!!!! okay so this one is like a crazy in-love type thing to say and a thing you might say after, idk, years of pretending you weren't in love with someone cause you couldn't be!!!!

"YOU'RE SO GORGEOUS" i mean it's so gay like how could you not. also gorgeous is a stereotypically feminine compliment so don't blame me

when character AxB are heavily hinted at being a thing, but AxC being way more popular as a ship so people claim that this is canon instead. and when pointing out that it's actually AxB and not AxC, they get defensive and go on about you supposedly just being a butthurt AxB shipper unable to accept a ship not being canon

when in reality you actually ship AxD, and couldn't care less about AxB and AxC, but are able to admit that they are not canon

I really need to take this out of my system because I stumbled across this polyphobic bullshit too many times.

When it comes to polyships, you all need to stop with this constant blabbering that ships involving character 1, character 2 and other characters are not character 1 x character 2. Yes, they fucking are.

It's literal Polyamory 101, if not Polyamory for dummies, and you're just full of polyphobic shit without even knowing (I hope).

Do you really think we polyamorous people wake up one day and fall in love with the same person, at the same time, with the same intensity? That's unicorn hunters' thinking. It's the first thing you learn when you get into consensual non-monogamy. I'm telling you: it doesn't.

Not all the people involved in a polycule are necessarily in love with each other or having sex with each other. That's called Heaven on Earth. Most of the times some of them are in love, some of them fuck, some of them do both, some of them just watch, some of them cuddle, some of them are into kink without the sex part and some of them despise each other.

Polycules are formed around relationships between individuals. Polyamory is messy and complicated because the people involved in it form bounds that are completely independent. Every pairing in a polycule has its own peculiar relationship. A, B and C are in a closed throuple? Then you have three different pairings involved: AxB, BxC and AxC. And also the dynamic between the three of them. The more characters you add, the more the pairings and variabilitiy. That's math, pure and simple. So YES: ships involving A, B and C are AxB too!

You are totally entitled to your NOTPs. You're entitled to dislike het ships or homo ships (even if I think you might have an issue if you are repulsed by an entire sexual orientation). You're entitled to your monoships or to dislike polyships. The point here is not personal preference.

The point is you have to fucking stop using polyphobic (or any other kind of queerphobic) statements to exclude things you don't like. Use tags. Don't consume a piece of media if you don't like it. Headcanon every single character on Earth as monogamous. But keep in mind you don't own an entire fandom and other people are entitled to enjoy their headcanon as much as you do.

Just be a decent human being to people who are just trying their best to survive in this world and yearn for representation. Because we exist, and those statements are hurtful.

Song-"Love, Me Normally" by Will Wood

As a aroace queer person who has pointed out queercoded will in the past, i interpret this song, but especially this line, as aroace coded. The singer asking to be 'loved normally' is something a lot of aroace spec people ask, and is hard for them, and the queer community in general, before they have come out to themselves or even just learned about queer people. To me, this song feels like an aroace person reaching out because of how 'broken' and 'not normal' they feel, begging to be loved 'normally', aka romantically/sexually. 

When the singer calls out to the audience, it feels as though they are calling for help because they want the kind of treatment they are talking to the audience about, especially when they talk about being 'loved the way everybody else is.'

Hearing mentions of 'the lyrics to my obituary,' 'delivered holding scissors,' 'won't follow my dreams,' 'i dont think life could be much worse than it is,' 'i dont wanna get old,' 'i drank myself to death,' etc, could be the singer being so depressed because they feel like they can't love 'normally' to the point of self-sabotage and potential suicide. 

The phrase, 'cause a normal human being wouldn't need to pretend to be normal, to be normal, well i guess that's the least that i owe ya,' seems to be very queer/aroace coded.

'a normal human being wouldn't need to pretend to be normal' could be describing how closeted queer people have to pretend to be what society deems, 'normal' (aka cishet and allo) in order to avoid hate crimes, bullying, abuse, murder, sexual abuse, being kicked out, etc. because they are queer, while their cishet allo ('normal') counterparts don't have to worry about that stuff. 

'to be normal, to be normal, well i guess that's the least that i owe ya' could be describing how so many queer people can learn to hate themselves because someone they know (parents, friends, family, etc) is homophobic and makes the queer person feel bad for being  queer, saying things like, 'that's not normal' or 'why can't you just be normal' when they simply don't understand queer identities.
