I'm the anon who has sent the ask about the majority of the votes being "no" and because some people in the comments seem offended by it I want to clarify that I too read about 50 books per year and many of them are usually classics and I have voted "no" or "haven't heard of it" for the majority of the polls as well! It's really just the "so many books so little time" phenomenon at play but out of context the polls just look like nobody on here has ever read a book and it's the IRONY that's so funny to me (because the target audience of this blog is avid readers who probably read a lot more than people who don't follow this blog)

JOMP BPC || January 1 || Reading Goals:
To slow down. The last few years I've noticed that I was paying more attention to number goals and aesthetic books stacks at the end of every month instead having fun with fiction or learning something from nonfiction. I wasn't sitting in wonder with poetry or lingering on comic art. I want my reading to be about the books, the story, the words painting their pictures in my imagination! Reading is joy and it's time I remembered that!

RALPH DENNIS: THE LOST 'HARDMAN' CLASSICS
On Rescuing a Classic Crime Series from Paperback Obscurity
by  LEE GOLDBERG
Tumblr media
My expensive, life-changing addiction began six years ago when a man approached me in a nameless hotel in a city I don’t remember.
“You’re really going love this,” Bill Crider said, almost in a whisper. “And I’m not going to let you leave here until you buy it.”
We were standing in front of a used bookseller’s table at a writer’s conference. I looked down and saw that Bill was holding a yellowed, brittle paperback out to me. It was entitled Hardman #1, The Charleston Knife is Back in Town by Ralph Dennis. The slug line across the top of the cover read “Brace yourself for broads, bullets, and bare-fisted action!”
It was obvious from the numbered title that it was one of those cheap, men’s action adventure paperbacks, a genre I knew well, having written, under the pseudonym “Ian Ludlow,” a series called .357 Vigilante in the mid-1980s for the same publisher that released this book. While there were some gems in the genre, most of them were hack work, badly written excuses for explicit sex and graphic violence that were sold in grocery store spinner racks nationwide. And a book called “Hardman”—wink, wink, nudge nudge—promised to be among the worst of them.
Bill must have seen the skepticism on my face so he smiled and said, “Trust me. You won’t regret it.”

The Princess and the Fangirl
YA contemporary prince & the pauper set at a convention
follows a fan who wants to save her fave character from being killed off, and the actress playing her who’s desperate to be free of the intense franchise
when they’re mistaken for each other they instantly hate each other - but after a script is leaked, they swap places to try solve each of their problems - and start to see the fandom from the each other’s perspective
light (since they know each other for like 2 days) f/f & m/f
this is so deeply mid-2010s fandom tumblr. lmao.
#a little cringe yet nostalgically entertaining....#The Princess and the Fangirl#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#i read this bc i was looking for available audiobooks and this was vaguely on my backlist of aspec books#bc the sapphic girl is supposedly demi-coded - tbqh there’s like maybe one and a half lines that vaguely implies it#I don’t feel like it’s worth recommending on this basis (and since the thing is set over a weekend I would call her greyspec not demi)#it definitely has the silly drama that i praised the last 2 ya contemporaries i read for not having skdjgkjf#the fangirl mc is. a little bit of an insufferable tumblr fangirl. also her parents are con parents so maybe it's inevitable#there’s a ‘my makeup is my armour’ moment….lmao#it kinda talks about misogyny directed at female stars but not about racism which. felt like a bit of a gap#FAR too many HP references.#‘this only happens in kdramas or YA novels’ beloved. this is a ya novel#would have loved more of the artist alley content LMAO#i will say the artist gets an 'ugh too expensive I'll just print it' comment and just shrugs it off without bitching about it. unrealistic#one thing about the AA is ppl love to bitch about things privately LMAO#there's no way you could spend a weekend with someone you've known for years online and not realise it's a different person...#there’s definitely some stuff about fandom and fan culture that’s still relevant#anyway. I think this is more entertaining to read Now than it would have been when it came out (which was only 2019 tbf but..)#and I wouldn’t have read it not on audio.#the thing is people are like ‘wahh pop culture references will age your book!!!!’ but everything ages every book.#and having a book be such an encapsulation of a certain time can be fun and interesting actually…….#obviously sometimes it can be an uncomfortable way (the hp refs in here were a bit) but like.#you know what i mean. nostalgia. that WAS how things were. still are in some cases. why not have books reflect that#will say im so glad i spent those tumblr fangirl years mostly with 0 local conventions LMAO#by the time i started doing cons regularly (not long before i started selling in AA) i was a bit more mature#have to say when it references TAZ i had to pause and laugh for a second akjfhjkds

I knew this book was an older release (I first read the series in 2008), but I didn’t realise it first came out when I was 6 years old.
Still a fun reread though.

Can you recommend historicals with the plot being the heroine wanting the brother/cousin of the hero?
Well, When He Was Wicked comes to mind--I maintain that while Francesca loved John and may not have been fully aware of her attraction to Michael when John was alive... she was attracted to him. You just don't ask your hot friend/cousin-in-law about his conquests while walking alone with him at night... platonically. It's weird.
Obviously, The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. Again, I don't really think Julia was conscious of the attraction when Albert was alive. But Edward DOES kiss her when he's alive, and there's obviously a spark.
Waking Up with The Duke by Lorraine Heath has Jayne have an affair (for baby-making purposes and with her husband's consent) with Ainsley, her husband's cousin. Again, I think she sublimated a lot of the attraction for as long as she could... but it was absolutely there, and I think that first kiss for sure awakened her.
Notorious Pleasures by Elizabeth Hoyt has the heroine have an affair with her fiancee's rakish brother, and it is HOT.
Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath has the heroine fall for her fiancee's brother... not that she or her fiancee KNOW at that point. Mick knows he's fiancee's brother, however, and that's WHY he starts it, lol.
His at Night by Sherry Thomas has a bit of a variation on this in that the heroine is TRYING to compromise a man she wants to marry, but she ends up accidentally doing it to his brother and having to marry him. Her new husband (who's a spy pretending to be an idiot, lol) absolutely knows what she was doing and has a very low opinion of her at first. He.... comes around.
The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian has the heroine fall for her husband's illegitimate son, lol.
