I am losing my mind a bit that Biden's stance on landmines is that they're inhumane and the USA military shouldn't use them unless for some reason it wants to.
Pwetty pwease don't be mad at me for using weapons that mostly murder civilians. I had a good weason for it I pwomise 🥺

Marking the 25 Years of Global Efforts to Eradicate Landmines and Empower Lives.
Civil society urges vigilance against backsliding on the treaty’s norms.
Tumblr media
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty's entry into force, a monumental milestone in global efforts to end the use of antipersonnel landmines, inherently indiscriminate weapons that have a devastating impact on communities worldwide.
Signed in December 1997, the treaty came into force on 1 March 1999, establishing a global prohibition on any use, production, stockpiling and transfer of antipersonnel landmines, as well as obligations to clear contaminated land and assist landmine victims. It was a groundbreaking achievement – the first time in history a conventional weapon was totally banned and victims’ rights to assistance recognized and included in a disarmament treaty.
Reflecting on the past 25 years, Ms. Tamar Gabelnick, Director of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines - Cluster Munition Coalition (ICBL-CMC) said: “Over the past 25 years, the ICBL has driven a transformative change in humanitarian disarmament. Our collective efforts have led to tangible and lasting changes for communities affected by mines – from the clearance of huge tracts of land to the recognition of rights of survivors. With tens of millions of stockpiled mines destroyed and near universal respect for the ban on use, the future risk to communities has also been curtailed."
Key Achievements
Today the convention enjoys widespread support with 164 countries formally onboard and with a strong stigma against the weapon established globally. Over the past 25 years the treaty has had remarkable impact, including:
-A substantial reduction in landmine casualties - down from some 25,000 casualties per year in 1999 to less than 5,000 casualties recorded last year by the Landmine Monitor; this means thousands of lives and limbs spared around the world;
Large tracts of contaminated land cleared and returned to productive use, with over 30 countries becoming mine-free;
-The almost universal end to use of a previously widely employed weapon
-Over 55 million mines held in stockpiles destroyed, with production and transfers almost nonexistent;
-The recognition of rights and needs of landmine victims, with efforts to provide assistance including medical care, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support and social and economic inclusion.
The Mine Ban Treaty has also inspired and served as a model for other international instruments, including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention on Cluster Munitions, the Treaty Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons, and most recently the Political Declaration on the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas.
Remaining Challenges
Despite these achievements, significant challenges persist. The conflict in Ukraine has created a new threat to the ban norm, with massive new contamination by Russia and reports of use by State Party Ukraine. Recent news reports also indicate that other European States Parties to the treaty fearing a threat from Russia are rethinking their commitment to the treaty despite their legal and moral obligations to the ban.
“Any movement by States Parties away from the norms of the treaty is unacceptable, would create a highly disturbing precedent, and would be an affront to the countless people who have lost lives and limbs to these hideous weapons. The reasons they were banned in the first place – their inherently indiscriminate nature, the horrific wounds they inflict, and the long-term threat they create for communities – hold equally true in times of conflict,” declared Ms. Gabelnick. “Any use of antipersonnel mines, by any actor, under any circumstances must be condemned in the strongest terms.”
Use has also been documented by Myanmar, as well as non-state armed groups in a handful of countries. New use has led to new contamination and a sharp rise in casualties. As reported by the latest Landmine Monitor over 85% of casualties recorded were civilians, and 50% were children. Dozens of countries still remain contaminated. In many clearance efforts have been slow, with contamination of improvised mines posing additional challenges. Many livelihoods are directly impacted and communities facing daily the threat of an accident. Risk education and victim assistance remain pressing challenges.
The needs of mine victims and survivors, who typically face permanent disabilities with profound impact on themselves and their families, are too often overlooked. Many struggle with access to assistance, services, and viable economic opportunities. The Landmine Monitor 2023 report underscores this concern, revealing that rehabilitation programs and support are critically underfunded, with international aid for victim assistance constituting only 5% of the total mine action funding.
The universalization of the convention has slowed down lately, with 33 states that are yet to join and no new member since 2017.
While celebrating the progress made over the past 25 years, the ICBL urges the global community to fortify efforts to fulfill the central goal of the treaty: “To put an end to the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines.” “We all need to continue with full determination to ensure further progress – stagnation or any backsliding are not an option, especially in these times of conflict and unrest. The treaty’s obligations to end all use of antipersonnel mines, clear all contaminated land, and empower all survivors must be respected without excuses, exceptions, or delays,” added Ms. Gabelnick.
ICBL’s call for redoubling of efforts comes ahead of the Siem Reap – Angkor Summit On A Mine-Free World - the Mine Ban Treaty’s milestone 5th Review Conference in Cambodia on 25-29 November 2024. States, the UN, and civil society, including mine survivors, will gather to asses the progress made to date and to provide a roadmap for the work ahead for the next five years, towards a future where no one lives in fear of landmines.
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) has played a pivotal role in the global movement to ban landmines, working hand in hand with governments, international organizations, and affected communities to create the treaty, expand its membership, and ensure its powerful provisions are put into practice by states. The ICBL has remained at the forefront of the efforts to see its promise fulfilled and put a conclusive end to the global scourge of landmines.

About the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL)
The ICBL is a global network of non-governmental organizations advocating for a world without antipersonnel landmines and where the suffering caused by these weapons has ended, and where the rights of victims are upheld and realized. The campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for its efforts to bring about the Mine Ban Treaty.

MYKOLAIV, UKRAINE—Kateryna Nahorna is getting ready to find trouble.
Part of an all-female team of dog handlers, the 22-year-old is training Ukraine’s technical survey dogs—Belgian Malinois that have learned to sniff out explosives.
The job is huge. Ukraine is now estimated to be the most heavily mined country on Earth. Deminers must survey every area that saw sustained fighting for unexploded mines, missiles, artillery shells, bombs, and a host of other ordnance—almost 25 percent of the country, according to government estimates.
The dogs can cover 1,500 square meters a day. In contrast, human deminers cover 10 square meters a day on average—by quickly narrowing down the areas that manual deminers will need to tackle, the dogs save valuable time.
“This job allows me to be a warrior for my country … but without having to kill anyone,” said Nahorna. “Our men protect us at war, and we do this to protect them at home.”
A highly practical reason drove the women’s recruitment. The specialized dog training was done in Cambodia, by the nonprofit Apopo, and military-aged men are currently not allowed to leave Ukraine.
War has shaken up gender dynamics in the Ukrainian economy, with women taking up jobs traditionally held by men, such as driving trucks or welding. Now, as mobilization ramps up once more, women are becoming increasingly important in roles that are critical for national security.
In Mykolaiv, in the industrial east, Nahorna and her dogs will soon take on one of the biggest targets of Russia’s military strategy when they start to demine the country’s energy infrastructure. Here, women have been stepping in to work in large numbers in steel mills, factories, and railways serving the front line.
It’s a big shift for Ukraine. Before the war, only 48 percent of women over age 15 took part in the workforce — one of the lowest rates in Europe. War has made collecting data on the gender composition of the workforce impossible, but today, 50,000 women serve in the Ukrainian army, compared to 30,000 before the war.
The catalyst came in 2017, years before the current war began. As conflict escalated with Russia in Crimea, the Ukrainian government overturned a Soviet-era law that had previously banned women from 450 occupations.
But obstacles still remain; for example, women are not allowed jobs the government deems too physically demanding. These barriers continue to be chipped away—most recently, women have been cleared to work in underground mines, something they were prevented from doing before.
Viktoriia Avramchuk never thought she would follow her father and husband into the coal mines for DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company.
Her lifelong fear of elevators was a big factor—but there was also the fact that it was illegal for women to work underground.
Her previous job working as a nanny in a local kindergarten disappeared overnight when schools were forced to close at the beginning of the war. After a year of being unemployed, she found that she had few other options.
“I would never have taken the job if I could have afforded not to,” Avramchuk said from her home in Pokrovsk. “But I also wanted to do something to help secure victory, and this was needed.”
The demining work that Nahorna does is urgent in part because more than 55 percent of the country is farmed.
Often called “the breadbasket of Europe,” Ukraine is one of the world’s top exporters of grain. The U.K.-based Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which has been advising the Ukrainian government on demining technology, estimates that landmines have resulted in annual GDP losses of $11 billion.
“Farmers feel the pressure to plow, which is dangerous,” said Jon Cunliffe, the Ukraine country director of Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a British nonprofit. “So we need to do as much surveying as possible to reduce the size of the possible contamination.”
The dogs can quickly clear an area of heavy vegetation, which greatly speeds up the process of releasing noncontaminated lands back to farmers. If the area is found to be unsafe, human deminers step in to clear the field manually.
“I’m not brave enough to be on the front line,” 29-year-old Iryna Manzevyta said as she slowly and diligently hovered a metal detector over a patch of farmland. “But I had to do something to help, and this seemed like a good alternative to make a difference.”
Groups like MAG are increasingly targeting women. With skilled male deminers regularly being picked up by military recruiters, recruiting women reduces the chances that expensive and time-consuming training will be invested in people who could be drafted to the front line at a moment’s notice. The demining work is expected to take decades, and women, unlike men, cannot be conscripted in Ukraine.
This urgency to recruit women is accelerating a gender shift already underway in the demining sector. Organizations like MAG have looked to recruit women as a way to empower them in local communities. Demining was once a heavily male-dominated sector, but women now make up 30 percent of workers in Vietnam and Colombia, around 40 percent in Cambodia, and more than 50 percent in Myanmar.
In Ukraine, the idea is to make demining an enterprise with “very little expat footprint,” and Cunliffe said that will only be possible by recruiting more women.
“We should not be here in 10 years. Not like in Iraq or South Sudan, where we have been for 30 years, or Vietnam, or Laos,” Cunliffe said. “It’s common sense that we bring in as many women as we can to do that. In five to 10 years, a lot of these women are going to end up being technical field managers, the jobs that are currently being done by old former British military guys, and it will change the face of demining worldwide because they can take those skills across the world.”
Manzevyta is one of the many women whose new job has turned her family dynamics on their head. She has handed over her previous life, running a small online beauty retail site, to her husband, who—though he gripes—stays at home while she is out demining.
“Life is completely different now,” she said, giggling. “I had to teach him how to use the washing machine, which settings to use, everything around the house because I’m mostly absent now.”
More seriously, Manzevyta said that the war has likely changed many women’s career trajectories.
“I can’t imagine people who have done work like this going back and working as florists once the war is over,” she laughed.

“Orphanclip¹ is kind of complicated to explain. You see, if we push all the orphans into the exact right spot, then drop the landmine and perform a series of frame perfect inputs, their ragdolling bodies with push us just far enough through the barrier to-“
“While you’re pushing those orphans, do you have time for some donations?”
“Uh. Sure. I guess.”
“We have $35 from 0rfanB0mber saying ‘orphanclip HYYYYYPE!’”
HYYYYYPE chants erupt from the crowd
“We have $20 from GigaDoggo saying ‘Pet! those! orphans!’ Next we have an anonymous $5000 donation that says ‘I lost my wife and brother to cancer last year. I’ll never get them back but thanks to charities like this other people won’t suffer the same loss’”
*landmine explodes, orphan viscera coats the screen*
“And finally we have a $5 donation asking chat to start a $5 orphan train choo choo!”
“Oh piss² I missed the 23rd consecutive 1-frame Orphanclip input, I was sure I could nail that on stage. Oh shit, sorry I swore.”
“While you’re setting up the clip again, do you have time for some donations?”
¹The Orphanclip would become a fan favorite glitch. At later GDQs, because the any% route of StreetSlayer: Blood of the Weak would reroute to skip it entirely, it would later become a $600,000 donation incentive to add a bonus “Orphanclip%” run. They would also sell official GDQ merch depicting the Orphanclip
²The speedrunner would later receive a permanent GDQ ban for swearing

today i woke up and saw tfblade post how he got banned three times and thought that was kinda crazy but funny.
but being one minute out of bed i skimmed it then saw a reply saying he needed to get off the net and that league is a childrens game.
this immediately provoked me because the thought of someone controlling someone else to be online and calling league a childrens game when i made a ton of money off it made me really angry.
so i replied with the "who the fuck do you think you are lmao" and was laughing on my way to the shower.
i played sf6 streamed played baulders with the boys, then checked back on it and saw a bunch of people saying i fell off, i wasnt human, one parasocial weirdo brought up my ex, and one guy being genuninely confused.
i felt anger and sadness for a good hour and then went back to reasess why this happened and realized the context was he didnt just fuck himself over but it was a korean bootcamp so a bunch of ppl that came over got banned not just him.
not to mention korea stans, vtubers fans, league fans all involved. so realizing that i stepped on a landmine i wasnt mad anymore and actually understood why the feedback was so awful and deleted some dumb shit i said and said sorry to the one guy who was confused on why i would ever say such a thing.
i was in a really bad mood at the end of my day but thanks to my friends who let me vent for a little i came to realize that i actually fucked up by not reading more. and even posting in drama filled with these kinds of fans. i'm impressed that anyone even liked my post because now i feel sick looking at the situation so i deleted it.
i still dont think it's right for others to tell people what to do and calling league a childrens game but i clearly missed the point and took a L today.
everything is good with me but i have no motivation to do anything besides play games and keep myself from being to unhealthy (i'm back at 230) but i plan on losing weight again before any event i go to (evo or twcon) next year and hopefully can post some very happy pictures once again like last year.
that was my day, i posted this because i feel like this is my safe space and i felt a little lonely for the first time in months.
i really dont think i would of done anything to much different in my life but so much pain is caused from misunderstandings and miscommunication and sometimes when i want attention and act like a fool once in awhile.
but i have a lot of gamer friends i enjoy playing games with so im good.
holy fuck i hate being bi now it's like double the horny and i dont need any of that.
thanks for coming to my ted talk

More Clone Wars headcanons that I keep basing off me and my family cause where else am I gonna get inspo from
Both Anakin and Ahsoka try to keep their shared space as clean as possible
Whenever they’re home and have free time after a long mission they’ll go around and pick up messes and they’ve got a somewhat decent system going until they get to the dishes that’s when war breaks out
Normally people switch between who loads and who unloads but most of the time it just falls on Ahsoka to do both and she’s tried literally everything to get him to do the dishes
She’s made a chore chart, she’s let the dishes pile so high they’re at risk of all falling out, and she’s ratted him at to Obi-Wan but nothing works except giving him a challenge
One day out of the blue she said something like “Last one to scale the wall washes the dishes when we get home!”
And here’s the thing they’ve been doing these competitions for years so she knows he’s more than down
Rex claims he’s never seen two people climb a wall faster in his life “They were like a blur” is something he mumbled after the two probably broke the galaxies record
Ahsoka won by pure determination alone her sore arms and scraped-up hands would be worth it when she got home and wouldn't have to do the dishes
Even tho their shared space is relatively clean Anakin’s room is like a death trap
Random clothing items are strewn all over the floor and pieces of droids are scattered among them the first time Ahsoka walked into the room she almost ate shit twice and if it wasn’t for her training she would have hit the floor the second she stepped inside
It’s a genuine miracle that he’s able to navigate this landmine of crap especially cause he doesn’t have night vision like she does
Ever since I heard Ahsoka growl that one time I’ve been imagining her doing rottie rumbles (which just means she growls when she’s happy look it up it’s adorable)
The first time it happened was when Ahsoka and Anakin were watching a movie and they fell asleep
He woke up basically on top of her and heard quiet rumbling coming from the togruta he quickly got off cause he thought he was hurting her and she woke up confused he asked if she was in pain and all she said was that was the best she had slept in a while
The next time was when the two had to share a bed with Obi-Wan it ended up working in their favor cause the planet they were on was freezing
She started to growl again but the two men were 1. Too tired to move and 2. Kind of curious why she was growling
When nothing changed and she didn’t seem to be exuding any kind of pain or stress they stayed
After a couple of times Anakin and Obi-Wan managed to calm down this instinctual part of themselves that told them to back up when something growls
The first time Padme witnessed it was during a big old group hug between her, her husband Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka
She almost gave it to that instinct if it wasn’t for Anakin and Obi-Wan's calm demeanor
Honestly it’s kind of become a telltale sign of who’s close to Ahsoka cause most people that she’s comfortable with know the difference between her happy grumbles and the growls that mean she wants to tear someones face off
Both Anakin and Ahsoka hate going to the med bay and the halls of healing or any place that’s got a person with medical training and tools to poke and prod them
And the healers hate them for it because most of the time the last thing they want to do is chase down a Jedi and his padawan as they’re bleeding out
So most of them banned together to give the duo a pretty extensive first aid kit and teach them both how to use it
Because for some kriffing reason they’re okay with being poked and prodded at if it isn’t a medical professional
The duo also participates in a decent amount of first aid training which has saved both of them and many other's so no one complains when they skip out on kind of important duties for those classes
As someone who has a lot of older siblings who I’m not related to so it wasn’t uncommon for people to tell me how attractive my siblings were
So I’m just imagining the other padawans telling Ahsoka how lucky she is to have Anakin as a mentor and while they’re complimenting him she notices a lot of those comments were centered around his age and his looks
At one point she’s sick of it and just straight up confronts them about it and they turn around and go “Well don’t you agree?” she alternates between being hunched over laughing and hunched over gagging
Anakin finds her a little while later still stuck in this sick cycle surrounded by a group of concerned padawans
He tries to get her help cause she’s kinda freaking him out but she stops him and just guides them both away because she knows if he shows more protective older brother energy the padawans are gonna be even more weird
Literally everyone is too scared to mention Ahsoka’s physical appearance around Anakin
But there have been a couple of times when he’s on an off-world mission and witnessed some dumb kids pushing their friends in her direction because it’s obvious they think she’s pretty
God forbid they catch a glimpse of him while it’s happening tho cause they walk away shaking like a leaf
He doesn’t think Ahsoka noticed and even if she did he distracted her with boba and ice cream because she can never turn that combo down

Just FYI. The landmine treaty had already been ratified before Diana died. The primary person behind the landmine treaty was a woman who, along with the organization she founded, received the Nobel Peace Prize. There was no mention of Diana in that peace prize cause while Diana got pr for the cause she really wasn't instrumental in the banning and clean up of the mines. Which makes it unlikely she was killed over land mines. If anyone would be targeted, it was the actual woman who started it all, got the treaty and won the Nobel.
Thank you❤️

I have a question. So, I have seen on the news that Harry is receiving this award. I don’t really care or have opinions about that. But it made me remember these comments I have read in the past. Comments like “Anne should’ve won the Nobel Prize for her work on (I actually forgot, I think it was her work on Save the Children, idk)” and “Diana should’ve won the Nobel Prize for her work on AIDS.” My question is can the royals win the Nobel Prize? Is that a possibility? And do you think Anne and Diana specifically could have been contenders?
Firstly, I don't know much about the Nobel Prizes but I've done some research.
Can the royals win the Nobel Prize? - Yes. There is no reason why a royal couldn't win a Nobel Prize. Politicians, religious leaders, charities and businesses can all win Nobels so there is no reason why royals can't. Also, from 1901, several minor royals were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
Do you think Anne and Diana specifically could have been contenders? - No. Of all the prizes, the only one they could possibly have been nominated for is the Nobel Peace Prize and neither of them actually... brought peace???
Diana's most famous work with AIDS happened in 1987, meaning she would have been eligible for the award in 1987 or 1988, depending on the cut off dates. In 1987, the award went to Óscar Arias, who worked on stopping conflict in Central America, while in 1988, it went to the United Nations Peace-Keeping Forces. If I was being even more blunt, I'd point out that Diana's work with AIDS had nothing to do with bringing "fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".
Her most famous work with landmines was 1997 and, due to the rules of Nobel nominations, she would only have been eligible in 1997, until her death. In 1997, the award was shared between Jody Williams, an anti-landmine activist, and the campaign she founded, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which is the campaign Diana was backing. So, although she didn't win a Nobel Prize, the campaign she was supporting did!
As for Anne, she was actually nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by President Kaunda of Zambia in 1990 for her work with Save the Children. She didn't win (in 1990, the prize was won by Mikhail Gorbachev) (which answers the question on whether she could have been a contender) but her work was extensive and impactful enough to have been considered. From what I can find, she's the only "modern" royal to have been nominated!

Chris Geidner at Law Dork:
Just before the close of business Tuesday, items appeared on two court dockets with which Law Dork readers are all too familiar that showed how far removed reality is from the ideal of “equal justice under law” engraved above the U.S. Supreme Court’s doors.
The items show — in shocking if predictable contrast — that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit is continuing to aggressively and explicitly encourage and protect forum-shopping for the right while federal courts in Alabama are continuing to aggressively investigate judicial concerns about alleged forum-shopping in LGBTQ civil rights litigation. First on Tuesday, two Trump appointees issued a ruling ordering, yet again, that a conservative ideological challenge to a Biden administration rule must remain within their ultraconservative circuit. Moments later, LGBTQ civil rights lawyers filed a notice that they had complied with the invasive order from another Trump appointee that he be allowed to review a document that they maintain is protected by attorney-client privilege as part of a two-year judge-shopping investigation. This issue is not new — I wrote about this issue more generally on June 10 — but Tuesday’s news developments are particularly stark examples of the differences in result that are the consequences of these differences in treatment.
Heads, the Chamber wins
For conservative forces — here, the Chamber of Commerce fighting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s credit card late fee rule — Judges Don Willett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has twice issued writs of mandamus to stop U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, a fellow Trump appointee, from transferring the challenge to the federal court in D.C. Pittman, after the first go-round, harshly criticized the “landmines” laid by the Fifth Circuit. In Tuesday’s order, Willett’s libertarianism was supported by Judge Kyle Duncan’s Christian nationalism to … protect business interests. [...]
Tails, LGBTQ civil rights lawyers lose
A little more than a 10-hour drive across the South away — across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and up Alabama — lawyers submitted a document to U.S. District Judge Liles Burke that they insist is protected by attorney-client privilege but that he has now twice ordered the LGBTQ civil rights lawyers to turn over more than two years into a judge-shopping investigation. Burke himself prompted the investigation by questioning in a court order whether parties’ dismissal of two cases challenging the state’s new ban on gender-affirming care for minors and lawyers’ discussion that another challenge would be brought constituted judge-shopping.
Chris Geidner writes in Law Dork how right-wing interests get deferential treatment in various courts, especially the 5th Circuit Court.

i would actually give up organs for an 18+ moderated oc storage site like straight up. If a site like that opened up I think I would actually abandon TH entirely.
I am TIRED of the teens on TH because they love going past all the blocks and warning on nsfw and then have the sheer audacity to pitch a fit over it. They're the people who see a little bit of cleavage in a character icon and go 'oh my god uncensored porn! Report! Report! Omg pedophile freak ewww' or have an actual mental breakdown over a character with big tits.
I've had a 14 year old message me on TH just to tell me they mass reported all my nsfw OCs and hoped I would get banned so I 'wouldn't even get the chance to groom someone'. And this is the most recent of 5 incidents from different minors contacting me just to complain about the NSFW I make, thats all properly filtered and has mature locks on btw.
And I feel like this type of shit happens WAY more than people think, its just that nsfw artists don't want to bring it up because theres already a stigma with nsfw and a lot of us are terrified of some random ass child going 'they exposed me to porn!' and getting labeled as a pedo even tho the child exposed themself to it despite the measures taken to keep them out.
I want an 18+ oc storage site so that instead of adults getting in trouble for the shit a kid did the kid gets in trouble. Theres no ground for a kid to stand on if they come to an 18+ website and then get exposed to 18+ content. They would just get fucking banned end of story. No adults getting labeled as a pedo for shit they didnt do.
TH has an awful stigma about nsfw so doing nsfw on th is like walking in a field of landmines and i want to get out of the field so god damn bad.
Sorry for the long ass post i just get so upset with th and its treatment of nsfw. These bitches will fr make you feel less than human.
I too have witnessed underaged artists commenting on filtered Toyhouse profiles thus exposing themselves as having lied about their age.
While I do not think an 18+ website would stop age lying anymore than having filters on Toyhouse does I do agree that it would make it more difficult in some aspects.

Just because we are suddenly now hearing about exploding pagers does not mean that this is the first time Israel has done thing kind of thing in Lebanon. It turns out that since the start of the most recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah back in 2006, Israel has laced all kinds of consumer products with explosives, including children's toys.
Israel has deployed all sorts of internationally banned weaponry against its neighbor to the north, so much so that the Lebanese people and their children are threatened by actual landmines as they go about their daily business.
"They seem innocuous, especially to the curious mind of a child," said Chris Clark of the United Nations Mine Action Coordination Centre (UNMACC) in Lebanon back in 2006 when the current Israel-Lebanon conflict began.
"They're small, they easily conceal themselves amongst all the rubble or the debris of the bombing. We find that children unwittingly pick them up and then, sadly, suffer injuries from them."

this is so random but i would love to hear your opinion on mydramalist as a fellow asian drama lover. because it’s obviously well known as a reliable wiki of sorts in dramaland but i beg to differ. (the only plus i feel being the summary and cast list for info)
i mean, i’ve not seen a single comsec w more than two brain cells as a whole? there’s always complaints about female leads rooted from misogyny, they are never happy about story progression, and i just find so many of them kinda dumb sorry lol. like zero media literacy to be found, insufferable arguments, etc. the star ratings are rly just given to popular dramas w high profile actors too.
and i personally find it disheartening that so many ppl end up referring to mdl when considering dramas because so many gems are then lost and not given appreciation.

anon. anon anon anon if you know the way i sat straight the f*ck up when i saw the notification and then read through this ask bc yes. yes to everything here that is exactly it. almost three fourths of what i've watched this year was either 1. not received well by the general MDL crowd (Moon in the Day. where is the taste brethren to not like MITD and not even for reasons that actually make sense), 2. received well but had a good chunk of people bitching in the comment section, or 3. received well but had the main point of the show (and its relevant characterization) go over their heads. (The Worst of Evil aka TWOE comment section, i am f*cking looking at you. i can count on one hand the number of people who understood what that show was supposed to be about) the one fourth that managed to escape was bc the toxicity did not reach the comment section and everyone was pretty f*cking civil. alas if only it could be like that all of the time
case in point for the ratings example, since we've already briefly tackled the lack of media literacy—j-dramas on MDL are notoriously rated much, much lower than either k- or c-dramas. half of the time that's bc there are less users watching (and rating) them therefore the average is lower but the other half it's bc people simply do not understand good media when they see it. don't get me wrong there's some freaky ass sh*t in the j-drama world that i would not touch with a Grinch level pole but to see MDLers out here talking about how slow j-dramas are and that nothing's happening. have you considered that you are either watching the wrong genre or you shouldn't be watching j-dramas in the first place bc their entire setup and general narrative framing arcs are not your style. have you even thought about that for six seconds or are you too busy expecting it to read like a typical tropey rom-com k-drama with your trending oppas. (no hate on my tropey rom-coms with [most of] said oppas, i need them when i don't want to think i just want to see sh*t on my screen and scream about hot people and the Hand Umbrellas in the Rain and the Back Hold when the male lead catches the female lead before she falls and you have the fifteen second focus on their faces just looking at each other)
and the misogyny. oh God do not get me started on the dichotomy that was the Cult, as we affectionatly called ourselves, on the feeds while THEE sageuk of the year My Dearest was airing (beloved show [that i still need to finish. JangChae i'm sorry ily life hates me like the mf it is 😭], beloved commentary on the feeds. they saw the vision on the feeds) vs the sh*tshow that was the landmine field of the comment section (the takes i saw on Gil Chae, Eun Ae AND Ryang Eum respectively.......... the misogyny wasn't enough we had to add the homophobia into the mix. buy one get one free deal fr fr). you mad man. that sh*t was insane there was a point i banned myself from scrolling farther than the cast section until the show finished airing. i kid you not on average they didn't have even half a braincell. maybe a quarter of a quarter of one. f*cked up just say you are not decent people and go
this is not to say that all of MDL is like this. i have gotten tuned into absolute masterpieces of content (and have tuned others, amen) bc of a comment comparing a show i'm watching to another one or a review being posted in the feeds about a film with less than 500 people interested. i have reconsidered my choice to not watch something after having spirited discussions in private messages discussing the pros and cons of the premise and whether they managed to get it done without f*cking sh*t up. i still contribute semi-regularly by adding relatively unknown actors and crew members to the database so they can get the credit due them. if you know where to look, you can get some good sh*t out of that place. problem is most users who are new to both the site and East/Southeast Asian cinema as a whole don't know where to look, and the cycle continues, and the ratings continue to be skewed/bloated and no one pays attention to the plot, if there even is any to pay attention to.
tl;dr: begging people to not let MDL be the be all end all for their drama recs a la 'well MDL doesn't like it so i won't watch it'. babe we have said MDLers complaining about how the ratings on Viki are too high but in my entire time watching dramas i've found that in the past two to three years the Viki ratings are making more sense than the MDL ones. sit with that for a sec. when you're done branch out and see the world (literally and cinematically), i promise you will be a better person for it
