process + commentary under the cut!

about the piece: i found myself in a bit of a slump after pushing out so much art in about 2 weeks so this piece took wayyyyy longer than any of my other ones. i knew I wanted the concept of a thermometer as a “cigarette” (do you guys get it. because like. a fever you can’t sweat out. a high fever. right you guys get it right??????) but it took me a LOT of tries to eventually land on a composition i actually liked—do not even get me STARTED on how I incorporated the title. I couldn’t decide on using a font or hand lettering or even where to place the text, it took me a solid two days to get to where it is now and I’m not even 100% happy with it. i tried to mimic a playing card design with the text placement but I’m not sure how well I pulled it off

here are some of the process pics:

the concept itself comes from a lot of the references to addiction in the album as well as the heavy burlesque, early 1900s, circus influence on the album aesthetic (whoever thought of this album theme deserves an award, AFYSCO has genuinely some of the coolest concepts from a design perspective to me)

about the album: AFYCSO is probably one of the best debut albums imo (although that title probably goes to Olivia Rodrigo’s “SOUR” for me)—it’s genuinely in my top three favorite albums of all time, no skips whatsoever on there. regardless of my opinion on Panic! at the Disco (which was pretty much neutral, I never really got into bandom and I didn’t really listen to panic’s music outside of AFYSCO) AFYSCO will always have a special place in my heart, both musically and lyrically it’s SO GOOD

although, I will say that there are some misogynistic undertones (and in some cases just outright misogyny) in these lyrics—I did touch on this topic in my DANCE DANCE commentary so I won’t repeat myself, check that post for more of my thoughts. all in all, the album bangs, but the misogynistic undertones were basically unavoidable if you look at the album in terms of being written by a teenage boy in the early 2000s who got cheated on. hell hath no fury like a woman scorned but the devil himself doesn’t write lyrics like a teen boy cheated on—go figure. im not saying all the songs have misogynistic undertones but I will say there are a couple that are WAY in ur face (looking at you, I write sins)

anyway, that’s basically it, ok byeeeeee!!!

p.s: i was debating mentioning this because I feel like im beating a dead horse, but in light of Brendon Urie’s recent actions (as well as past controversial actions), I don’t support him and feel extremely bad about the people who his actions have hurt—but I don’t think that means much from a person who never really liked him in the first place. again, while I was a BIG fan of AFYCSO, I never really got into Panic! at the Disco (I only listened to Pretty. Odd. recently this month and before that I only really knew the big radio hits). im not gonna pretend like I know everything about what happened with Panic! at the Disco in recent years and truly? I don’t Care to find out—panic! has been disbanded, and while I look at AFYSCO fondly with nostalgia, I don’t feel much about the band itself

p.p.s: AFYCSO almost killed me once because when I had a kidney infection (although I didn’t know it at the time) I had an INSANELY HIGH fever. I thought to myself “haha this is a fever I can’t sweat out!! like the album!!” and then promptly passed out—I wasted my last coherent thought on some stupid P!TAD joke instead of. asking for medical attention. anyway I ended up in the emergency room so I didn’t die but it was a near thing

the idea that keeps on going:

every day you have the opportunity to make a certain number of posts. depending on what you post, you attract different people in the tags which furthers your connections. the more members you recruit, the more your circle increases and there’s a bigger chance of your post getting more notes -> more new people in the tags. for example if you post about how dessert duo is the enemy from the eyes of bogwarts, you’ll attract bad faith dessert duo fans (who will want to #cancel you) but you’ll also get enthusiastic bogwarts fans. posting about shower husbands will attract people more likely to be fine with shipping. appealing to the secret starian corner (often under attack) also strengthens the ship alliance.

if your fandom enjoyment level gets completely depleted the first time, you get one (1) get out of jail free card which is someone bringing up #SHIPlakebog from 2019 which raises your level to sustain for a few more days before you die or raise it high enough to survive. #SHIPlakebog is a precious trump card.

since the whole thing is water themed, finding someone to join is known as “fishing” and the members are called “fishies”. the process is described as hook (sending out bait), line (waiting for the bait to be taken/ warily pondering one’s vibes), and sinker (sending the dm).

eventually you learn the player character has some Embarrassing Fandom History they would prefer to hide, like idk writing bandom fics or x reader fics on wattpad or participating in a ship war or the general voltron experience.

sequel idea: it’s a few months after triple life ended and final life is starting in autumn. and then disaster strikes! someone leaks screenshots of your “controversial” server and your members start receiving hate mail. there is a snitch Among Us. in these Boggy Waters. your new task is to find the boogeyman (boggyman?)— while watching final life live and experiencing whatever gay shit they’re up to this time. your job is to calm everyone down before fandom enjoyment decreases and your server falls apart

the snitch turns out to be a teenager who sent the scs to their friends for fun but one of the friends didn’t like shipping so they sent it to their other friend group to vent, intending for it to private, but it spiralled and leaked. and the teen felt so bad so they never came forward. the moral of the story is that cyberbullying is bad and rpf is ok.

mars gets on tumblr during this time and things happen. final life causes pathubs (pathoslab x treedoubleo) to trend which helps to normalise shipping.

interactive fiction idea: it’s 2021, you play as a new barktree shipper emerging from the hot new mcyt series triple life. your task is to sus out who else on your dash is also a secret shipper and invite them to your “controversial” shipping discord server without being cancelled. you’ll have to dig through ao3s, abandoned twitter accounts, old rpf fics from a pseud they no longer use, general posts, youtube comments, which username clipped this shippy moment between benthebog and martin ofthebigwaters

Hi! I actually think you are totally right, and the “Mikey stuff” is from years and years ago, and all of it just hit the surface, because both bands are active again in the same period of time. Basically, I think all is good. All he knows is that this town has some horrible things happening to it, and no one seems to care enough to lift their heads and actually see. He has no idea what's going on, and is one of the few people that wants to find out. Luckily, Gerard is a few steps ahead of him.

Howl (Frerard Werewolf AU) by FrerardAndTheAssbutts666, Frank/Gerard, 18k, Teen And Up Audiences. In a small village, the townspeople all live together in harmony. But when a young woman is found dead, a wave of fear washes over the former peaceful village. Especially when signs of Werewolves, and Witches are linked to the murder. 17 year old Gerard Way is a young man who is well liked by everyone in the village, partly due to his families status in the village. Despite the fact that his village is a God fearing one and he wears dresses. And when another murder is committed, showing the same signs as the first, the village turns to full blown panic, and reinforcements are sent in to help. A Werewolf hunter and his son have traveled to help save this village from the belly of the beast, all while Gerard begins to question everything. The only person he could truly trust during this time of fear, is his boyfriend and lover, Frank. Frank and Gerard have been having a secret relationship, fearing they would be condemned to death if anyone knew. But as more blood is shed and more bodies hit the ground, Gerard begins to piece together that the beast is closer than he thinks. (Loosely based off Red Riding Hood with Amanda Seyfried and Gary Goldman...Okay more like its pretty based off it :p.)

Written in the Sand by Scarlet_Cross, Sarah/Brendon in a later fic, 28k, Teen And Up Audiences. Desert is brutal, it gives no second chances. It demands respect, sacrifice, and blood. (It's set in a super AU danger days pre-music videos universe. Mostly centered on the MCR boys, but there will be cameos, references, and side shoot offs into different bandom areas.)

Frank ends up finding Gerard...as a professional, exotic dancer in the bad part of town. Gerard is special and unique and it’s Frank’s job to protect him at all costs. Eventually Frank discovers that Gerard is an angel and has powers stronger than all demons combined...when that news gets out, all demons and angels are on the search for Gerard.

When I was in middle school i met one of my closest friends because we were both listening to the black parade while we made collages in art class, and we teamed up to go through all the magazines we were tearing apart to find every picture of gerard way and pete wentz that we could so that we could stick them on our bedroom walls. We would go to the library before homeroom every day and a whole group of us would use the four ancient computers to trawl google images for pictures we hadn't seen before to decorate our lockers and bedrooms with, and we would print out a whole stack every day and then carry them around all day, and show them off to each other like pokemon cards at lunch or between classes. We had the same birthday and the same middle name so we decided that we were destined to be best friends forever, and we had joint birthday parties every year for most of high school. The first one was cosplay themed and she was revenge era frank iero and her boyfriend was robert smith of the cure and I was rose tyler but edgy and our friends gave us at least four matching mcr shirts. We had a my chem party one year and made coloring sheets with customizable killjoy rayguns. We used to wear matching outfits to school if our birthday fell on a weekday, and we had little clip in tiaras and coordinated makeup. We were way into bandom as a concept and we would rec fics for each other but I had way more patience and less tolerance for bad writing than her so she never read the long fics I wanted her to and I never read the bad ones she sent me, but we both read and absolutely loved throam and we obsessed about it for months, and planned to have a throam/panic themed party that year, and she was planning to buy a bound copy of all three books for us to share, and I was going to buy us shirts for one of the bands, because I felt no shame in asking my mother to buy rpf merchandise off etsy at that point in my life. So now I have pictures of me at school on my birthday (i was maybe 16?) wearing a Jackie me and this lady tour t shirt with fake dates from 1970-whatever and matching purple lipstick and she never bought the books and then a few years later we had a huge falling out except no one can remember why and we havent spoken on purpose since. And I don't. Know. What. To do with this shirt. Do I sell it? Depop or something? Can I live with the shame of accepting money for panic at the disco rpf merchandise that some poor sucker with an etsy account lovingly designed? I cannot ethically give it to goodwill I dont think. Do I let it age into some kind of collectors item? I've been typing this post so long that my phone is starting to lag and I still dont know what to do. Should I just hang on it as a keepsake? Does she still have hers? Someone please help me I'm begging my mom just keeps laughing at me when I ask her and its been weeks

multsicorn’s infinite fic playlist

some friends in a chat were talking about comfort fic!  so I have Made A List.  Ten of my very favorite fics to reread when I need a boost, in ten different fandoms.  In no order.  And with no particular theme, that I can tell.  They’re probably all more-or-less mostly self-contained enough to work even if you don’t know the canon?  Certainly the Hockey RPF fic is (cause I don’t know anything about the canon there!), and who doesn’t know HP, etc....

.... four are about fucked-up families, (cause I find that cathartic, and people dealing with it comforting), two are polyfic, (because more relationships interacting to me means ~more love~), three are really mostly about the ~feel~ of the universe, (the fun mundanity of a not-quite-mundane canon universe! or of a perfectly balanced space au), and then the last one is... about how to know if you’re in love on one side of it, and about how to get over it on the other (because how does one romance).

the ones about fucked-up families:

When The Lights Go Out, Will You Take Me With You? by narceus (Glee, Kurt/Blaine, m, ~11k).  I love the way that it punches out my heart and then puts it back together?  Lmao, that’s very personal.  But I love the way that - what can I say.  This isn’t a fic about romance, it’s a fic about family - well.  How sometimes your family is your boyfriend, and your mutual friends, how sometimes ‘family’ is something you have to leave, and real family is something you build.  ‘This is exactly what it’s like,’ and it’s wish-fulfillment, and, yes, somehow it’s both of those things.

You can run away with me any time you want.

Come Marching Home by ossapher (American Revolution RPF/Hamilton, Hamilton/Laurens, t, ~9k).  Fraught relationships with family members who think they love you but they really really don’t are my jam, and the way that this fic deals with a younger still-dependent sibling who’s caught in the middle between John and his horrible father is especially my jam.  Also, fics that transform a complicated set of characters/relationships/etc. from canon to a completely other setting thoughtfully, which this fic ‘verse has a lot of fun with.

John Laurens attempts to reconcile with his U.S. Senator dad after years of minimal contact. It's family, though, so nothing goes as planned.

Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property by Helenish (Harry Potter, Draco/Neville, e, ~23k).  I love the way that Draco here builds a life up out of nothing.  It’s very cozy from one angle, full of cooking and baking and making a house a home, but it also goes hard on the way that abused children will internalize their situation as the expected baseline of life, which I appreciate very much.

Surely it is a mistake to allow a single youthful indiscretion to cloud an already promising career.

A Month of Sundays by Kelfin (Hockey RPF, Erik Johnson/Gabriel Landeskog, m, ~69k).  I love the push-pull of a relationship that naturally slides very quickly into something very close and intimate, that keeps being pulled back from that by Erik’s internalized homophobia.  I love the way the story negotiates the very real knock-on effects of that on Gabe, his maybe-maybe-not partner, and the way the Erik negotiates ‘I love my family... but they don’t love me.’

Unlike some guys, who freak out when things get even a little bit gay, Erik is fine with this stuff. Erik's not even fazed when Gabe's attempts at flirting with him start to get semi-public, a fact that, by his own judgment, makes him at least five to seven times more tolerant than your average forward-thinking American.

the polyfics:

Everything That You Can Keep by Dira Sudis (dsudis) (Vorkosigan Saga, Aral/Jole, backgroundy Aral/Cordelia, e, ~30k).  I love this story’s negotiation of not just polyamory (and I love negotiation of polyamory stories - how two people in one relationship share feelings about yet another person, and figure things out? yes, please), but specifically of all the added complications that come out in the highly hierarchical, secretive, and loyalty-based Vor society.  When even asking about asking is a matter of trust, requested and given?  That goes straight to my id.

The impossible takes a little more time, a lot of negotiation.

Love: The Package Deal by jjtaylor (Bandom, Frank/Gerard/Lindsey/Jamia, m, ~30k).  I love the way that the different relationships are layered over and relate to each other - that’s one of the big things I like about polyfic - and the way that the amnesia smashes them together by bringing a past relationship to the present, while making the present one abstract and back to square one.  I love how the amnesia in fact smashes together all the highs and lows of eventful years’ worth of Gerard’s life: artistic success, problems with drugs and addiction... they’re all right there waiting for you.

Gerard gets a special kind of amnesia. Frank gets to reexamine his idea of acceptable relationship structures. Lots of people fail to communicate effectively, but they all sure remember how to kiss.

the cozy weirdness of the universe:

it's a new craze by attheborder (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley, t, ~6k).  The development of the relationship strikes a nice balance between angst and sweetness, but what I really come back to this fic for is the fictional advice podcast!  That Aziraphale and Crowley start together, which it’s about, and the way that they sprinkle their up-close experience of history into their discussion on it - and then the way that the fandom latches onto and tries to make sense of that.  It is just, purely, A DELIGHT.

CROWLEY: I try not to make a habit of gratitude, but I must give our appreciation to everyone out there who’s been listening and subscribing to The Ineffable Plan. AZIRAPHALE: Ooh, yes, we’ve become quite popular, haven’t we? CROWLEY: Yeah, just hit number eight on the advice charts … No advertising at all. AZIRAPHALE: Mm. How … miraculous. CROWLEY: … Aziraphale. You did not.

Crowley and Aziraphale are very possibly the people least qualified, on the entire planet, to start up an advice podcast.

But what else is there to do when the world isn’t ending anytime soon, you’re technically on indefinite sabbatical from your lifelong careers, and you need a plausible excuse to spend more time with your best friend who you’re definitely not, absolutely not, maybe just a little, actually maybe overwhelmingly in love with?

A Resolution of Territory by arboretum (Hikaru no Go, Hikaru/Akira, e, ~10k).  I just love imagining spending my life playing Go, okay!  This fic is wonderfully immersive in a weird-but-good everyday reality, of spending your whole life immersed in a game that just fascinates you, alongside your friends - and your boyfriend, too, which is to say, the one person who shares your fascination in the most direct and deepest and mutually obsessive way.  Eventually he’s your boyfriend, of course.

The point is, life is hectic, but it's good.

The Vastness of Space by shysweetthing (Yuri on Ice, Victor/Yuuri, e, ~17k).  I love the way that the space setting here gives scope for best-friends-and-partners, for cute and amusing low-stakes shenanigans and then cleverly solved higher-stakes adventure.  I love how sweet Victor and Yuuri are in caring for each other in dire circumstances, and why they both see each other as beyond their reach in the context of this imagined world.

As chief communications officer on board the Interstellar Alliance Fleet’s Star Ship Victory, Yuuri doesn’t have to think about who he actually is on his home planet. He just has to listen to his captain, do his job, and…not fall in love with his best friend, the ship’s science officer, Victor Nikiforov.

Well. Two out of three’s not bad.

Then his mother calls with the worst possible news: She, the Empress of New Nihon, has arranged Yuuri’s marriage. There’s only one thing Yuuri can do: Fake a boyfriend, and fake one fast. Who better/worse to play that role than the friend he wishes was more? What can go wrong? It’s not like Yuuri can fall more in love...

the how does romance (with my beloved controversial otp):

if you change your mind by leetlebird (Check, Please!, Jack/Parse, e, ~35k).  I love the way this story shows Jack trying to work out what love means for him, anyway, and Kent learning to deal with and work around feelings that he thinks for most of the story are unrequited.  And the cozy jury-rigged domesticity of especially the final chapters/scenes.

Beneath the table, Jack’s hand squeezes around Kent’s knee. And -- Kent forgets. For just a few seconds, he forgets that they can’t be together, that Jack doesn’t want him in that way, that he’s trying to move on.

“We’re friends, right?” Jack says.

“Yeah, Zimms,” he says. “We’re friends.”

Or: Kent and Jack are friends, then friends-with-benefits, then maybe something more. Kent isn’t sure.

challenge #1: heaven & hell

hello, all! if you remember, at the beginning of july i promised you all that i would be hosting my very first aesthetic challenge later that month/early this month. 

as you can tell, this did not happen. between summer work and everything else, i had no time to sit down and write an announcement post like the one you’re currently reading. which is why i’m writing said post now.

theme-

as you can tell from the title, the theme for this month’s challenge (inspired by my current hyperfixation *cough* stream good omens on amazon prime *cough*) will revolve around angels, demons, and the places they call home. you’ll be free to explore the nuances of both through whatever means you please: blurring the lines between them, highlighting their differences, harshly contrasting them, the choice is yours!

happy friday the 13th, it’s the perfect time to announce our first subplot. 

please click HERE to find out what exactly a subplot is and what it means for the group. a couple things that aren’t listed there or we just want to reiterate: if you choose not to opt into these subplots they will not affect you in the group in any way, shape, or form. we want to recognize that you guys joined our group for a specific plot and anything else is simply extra. subplots are extra, optional, and just for fun and character development and to spice things up every few months. if you’re not interested in them, that’s a-okay. if you don’t like the current one, you may be interested in the next one, and that’s also okay! these are not for everyone. i already have some future subplots in mind that i know my own characters won’t opt into, these are not meant to be something for everything, that’s why they are background plots. 

our fall/halloween subplot is slasher themed, and since this is content that may be triggering to some, we will be very strict about what is posted on the dash about it. we will not post details on the main blog, and any post with details about the plot that is posted on the musings blog will be under a read more and have a specific warning where to stop reading before any details. any posts about this subplot by us, the musings blog, or members in the group will be tagged. if you absolutely need to unfollow the musings blog because just blocking tags is not enough, we will allow that in this case only, you just need to tell us first so we can go over what unfollowing the musings blog will mean and how you can still participate in games/other things posted on the musings blog that aren’t subplot related. for an extra layer of comfort, characters who are participating in this subplot are not allowed to talk to characters who are not about it (unless you have a plot with a writer and ask them first, but you must ask them first and they must say yes). the comfort of anyone who is triggered by the content of this subplot is our number one priority and if you are one of those people, feel free to message us and we will go over ways to eliminate that discomfort by removing the problem for you via blocking, unfollowing, etc until the subplot ends in november.

Birbs, PG Tips, ships, pics and chapters: a year in bandom

How do you measure a year? I am measuring it in words. 296, 207 of them as a matter of fact. Most of those were written within the same six months or so but that is absolutely not the point.  I published my first proper fic in this fandom exactly a year ago yesterday.  You know me, I have the attention span of a cheesecake and absolutely forgot.

But anyway, this fandom.  I love this fandom; more specifically, I love my pack. I have been adopted by the most talented, kind, sweet and supportive group of folks that I could ever dream of being able to call friends.  I am an odd duck (swan) you know this. I write things that most people don’t like; my original female characters are my babies and I am hopelessly devoted to them.

I’m afraid of change, I really am; I am set in my ways and, because of that, I wrote a lot of variations on the same theme. Until I was encouraged to do otherwise by a beautiful friend that I only know because of this crazy place.  

As much as I love the actual writing (and the validation that comes with that of course, hello I need it)  The people that I have met, the stories I have been privileged enough to watch unfold, and the moments that stick in my mind, that I always remember when I am especially gray are what I treasure the most.

In the last year, I have gone from updating daily to maybe updating one story once a month; I am inconsistent as all hell. I have lost both the time to write (thank you work) and the motivation on most days because I am so tired.  I am such a poor reader; I can devour my beloved birb pack’s fics when I can and then not comment for ages.  I have faults and doubts but I have been, somehow, adopted by this absolutely gorgeous group of people who represent, to me anyway, what is good and right and amazing about this occasionally toxic fandom.

My point and I do have one, is this…. Thank you.  To my birb pack, thank you.  For supporting me even when I am a mess. For sharing your beautiful words and endless ideas.  For talking with me at these ridiculous hours when I couldn’t or wouldn't sleep.  For your patience when I don’t update your favorites for days, weeks, months at a time. For your understanding when I am THE WORST.  And mostly, for your time; the stories you write, the art you create and the words that you share, both fic related or not…. They sometimes are what gives me the strength to get through the day.
