Villain Talk: Xande
Final Fantasy has a smorgasbord of villains in its roster. You have the morally complex such as emperors who seek to unshackle humanity from the gods or whatever, to the intelligent, nihilistic and possessing a wicked sense of humor to even more simpler cases like a man that is actually a tree stuffed full of evil spirits. However, if one were to look at the villains as a whole, who would be the weakest link? The bad egg? The one that isn’t up to snuff? With such a strong set of rouges, surely it must be difficult to deter It’s Xande. I like the guy, but it’s Xande.
Tumblr media
General
Xande suffers, more than anything, from the format of the game, in that it isn’t very story-oriented. Final Fantasy 3 would be akin to a monster of the week show; one with the occasional plot development until the season finale. Xande is basically the Dr. Tomoe or Rita Repulsa to the main characters’ Sailor Scouts or Power Rangers respectively, except that they don’t show him sending the monsters and also a significant chunk of those monsters may not even be his.
Overall, Xande suffers from three issues as a villain:
Lack Of Impact
Final Fantasy villains usually have some major impact or effect on the world in some fashion. Chaos and his four fiends messed with the elemental crystals, throwing the world into ruin (among other things). The Palamecia Empire laid waste to the rest of the world. Golbez used Baron’s forces to attack its neighbors and steal their crystals, alongside other attacks. ExDeath is a war criminal in Galuf’s world and begins tossing places into the Void when he gains power over it. Most of the characters in VI are victimized in some way by the Gestahl Empire and things only get worse when Kekfa ascends to godhood. And then, there is Xande. It’d be a lie to say that Xande didn’t impact his world; He caused the Great Earthquake after all. But, overall Xande somehow still feels like he lacks impact despite it. The Great Earthquake causes problems, but most of them are easily reversible. Additionally, most of the problems it caused were indirect rather than being intentional on Xande’s part. The surface is even worse as that is totally fine after it is revived. To illustrate this, here is each boss in the game with a ranking: X means that Xande intentionally sent them (or is implied to), E means that they were a side-effect of the earthquake, meaning that Xande only inadvertently had a hand in their creation, and I means that there is no clear evidence that they were involved with Xande. Land Turtle – X (?) Djinn – E Giant Rat – I (The Giant Rat is guarding the Nepto Dragon’s eye, but I don’t recall any evidence that Xande or the earthquake made it evil). Medusa – X Gutsco/Salamander – I Hein – E Kraken – X Goldor – I Garuda – I (There is no evidence that Xande resurrected Garuda.) Hecantoncheir – I (Hecantoncheir’s dialogue suggests that it is the fang’s guardian,) Titan - X
This count is not counting the Eureka or Summon bosses. It is also not counting Doga and Unei, who fight the party explicitly to prepare them for Xande. As one can see, Xande has his own equivalent to the four fiends. But whereas Golbez and Garland’s fiends actually accomplish significant tasks, only half of Xande’s fiends do so: Medusa causing the Tower of Owen’s furnace to go haywire and Kraken attacking the water crystal, forcing the water maidens to seal it. During the story, two of the Warriors of Lights’ allies sacrifice themselves, but only one stays dead. Everything else is either a side effect of Xande’s messing about or not even connected to him to begin with. This is partially a side effect of FFIII’s desired narrative: A rather light-hearted adventure with not much of an overall plot. Thus, most of the issues on the Floating Continent are reversible, the Water Crystal dilemma aside the surface is mostly ok and the only major defined threat to the world pops up at the very end.
Lack of Presence
In a different way from the previous section. Final Fantasy antagonists usually make multiple appearances in their games, usually in some way that gives them a major impact. Garland works in a twist villain/book ends fashion. The Emperor already has his army and warmachines and even baits the party into fighting in his colosseum. Golbez started the trend of villains confronting the main characters multiple times over the course of the game, which ExDeath and Kefka continue.
And then, again, there’s Xande. It should be noted that Xande is a trend-setter in that he’s the first Final Fantasy villain with something approaching a fleshed out backstory; Garland’s backstory is vague and The Emperor’s is only given the questionably-canon “Final Fantasy 2: Labyrinth of Nightmares” novel. Xande’s motive for why he’s doing what he’s doing is actually explained within the game itself. In spite of this aspect of Xande being fleshed out, the rest can’t be said for the rest of him. Xande’s only appearance is at the end of the game, first gloating about how the Warriors of the Light have fallen for his trap, and then being fought. Even Garland, by virtue of being a twist villain, actually appears prior to confronting him in the past. Xande is pretty much an outlier in never making an appearance prior to the final battle. While it isn’t impossible for villains to make a strong impression despite a lack of screentime, Xande doesn’t have that either. He’s treated as just another boss, complete with having the standard boss theme. Given the context of the era, it kinda does still work as a fake out; FFII only had one boss theme after all. But given that II did toy around with giving the Emperor his own boss theme, and the Cloud of Darkness has its boss theme, Xande kinda draws the short end of the stick. To give the devs a bit of credit (or maybe not), a design doc in the Ultimania suggests that Xande was intended to get his own musical theme, but it didn’t pan out.
Lack of Connection
Final Fantasy has a habit of making their hero-villain dynamics personal. The Warriors of Light found themselves locked into a time loop with Garland, constantly killing each other. Firion, Maria and Guy lost their home and their family to the Empire, most notably their brother Leon. Cecil loses his position as leader of the Red Wings to Golbez, who has the king replaced with one of his own men and constantly toys with him, to say nothing of the reveal. ExDeath was the personal nemesis of Galuf and his team, and Bartz happens to be the son of one of those team members. While not everyone was personally victimized by the Gestahl Empire, a majority of the party were affected by it in some way, shape or form. And then, yet again, there is Xande. If there is a question of which hero/villain combo has the least connection to each other, it’d be hard to beat Xande and the Onion Knights.. Now, that’s not to say that none exists: Xande is responsible for the deaths of Aria, Doga and Unei at the end of the day (indeed, Opera Omnia leans into that to explain why Onion Knight is hesitant to use Xande’s dimensional coordinates i.e. use him in the party). But due to the nature of III’s plot, Xande doesn’t really have any sort of ‘fated relationship’ with them like the other protagonists. You could argue that them being Doga and Unei’s proteges makes up for it, but that only happens at the last fourth of the game. For all intents and purposes, Xande gets killed by four random kids. It’s entertainingly pathetic when you think about it.
So, Xande may lack all of these things, but so what? Garland and the Emperor were both lacklustre in initial appearances before appearing in spinoffs to get more refined. Xande just needs to show up in something like Dissidia and-
Tumblr media
The Cloud of Darkness
The Cloud of Darkness is the prototype of the “Giant Space Flea From Nowhere” type of Final Fantasy final boss. These are bosses that come out of nowhere at the end of the game, sometimes as a physical manifestation of the game’s themes. In the Cloud of Darkness’ case, it is an emissary of The Void; the recurring force of nothingness throughout the Final Fantasy series. While the Void featured very prominently in Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy III was the first game to introduce the concept, albeit making it out to be more of a natural phenomenon. The Void is the force from which both the light world and the dark world emerged from and, based on the Warriors of Darkness’ words, the force that they will someday return to. The game is somewhat vague on the specifics, but it’s implied that in the process the worlds of light and dark merge, or something. In any case, The Cloud of Darkness appears whenever the balance between Light and Dark gets too unbalanced and goes about returning the world to the void, regardless of whether its time or not. It’s implied that the Warriors of the Dark had to fight it during the Wrath of Light and, thanks to Xande, it’s the Warriors of the Light’s turn to do so now. As an aside, the Ultimania reveals that the Cloud of Darkness was originally more closely tied to Xande, being created by the mage via the Dark Crystals (explaining why the WoLs go around to each and releases them from the Cloud’s control). On a more speculatory note, Xande was intended to be a woman, calling into question the possibility of the CoD being modeled after him/her, but no artwork of Xande from that stage is suggested to exist, so this is just a theory. Regardless of what could’ve been, the Cloud of Darkness makes for a significant impression compared to Xande. Its first appearance has it kill your party, it is the reason for III’s infamous final boss gauntlet, it even has a unique effect in the original game where its sprite colors change over the course of the encounters. That plus the game’s scale and stakes become much higher once it gets involved. So, for all of those reasons, it is of no surprise that the Cloud of Darkness became FF3’s go-to villain representative. It appeared in Dissidia as Onion Knight’s rival and retains this role in later appearances, especially in Opera Omnia where it [REDACTED DUE TO SPOILERS]. This on top of featuring in other games such as FFXI. All of this is well and good, but the Cloud of Darkness only enters the story at the very end. Poor Xande got the short end of the stick. So with all of that in mind: What about the remake? The 3D remake expanded on the story of Final Fantasy III, and while most know of the main protagonists, what about the other characters, most particularly Xande? Golbez got quite the glow-up in the FFIV 3D remake, with the backstory flashbacks. What about Xande? Is he improved? …Kinda?
Remake Xande
The FF3 remake makes a number of changes to the game’s plot and Xande honestly benefited from it. That’s not to say he’s a better villain per say, but he’s quite improved. Xande still lacks presence, but these aren’t as much of a problem due to the game’s script changes. Instead, Xande is something of a Red Herring. But before we can talk about that, we must talk about a way Xande improved:
Consistency. In the original FFIII, Xande’s overall end goal was kept ambiguous. Sure he’s miffed about gaining mortality, but what does summoning the darkness have to do with it? Perhaps he was pulling a Kuja before Kuja existed: Xande knew he was going to die and decided that if he must go, then everything else is going with him. In the remake, however, this is reinterpreted. Xande messing with the balance is said to have caused time on the surface to cease. Why? Because he wanted to regain his immortality, and if freezing time was as close as he was ever going to get, then that’s fine by him. As a result of this, parts of the game were rewritten with this in mind. In particular (a point emphasized in unused content) the hints of the Flood of Light that we get implied something similar happened in the past: That the sun stopped moving, creating an eternal day. It’s implied that Xande basically did the opposite and created an eternal night. More subtly, the Curse of the Five Wyrms was also overhauled: In the original, the wyrm statues were actual wyrms that Xande intended to feed the frozen youths to. In the remake, the freezing in place is the curse itself, which thematically is similar to what Xande’s trying to do. Dude’s really into freezing stuff now. Even Xande’s lines before battle in the remake now make mention of his goal to gain eternal life. Also the main theme of the game is named “Eternal Wind”, so you know, maybe there’s something complementary there.
Connections
In terms of connections, Xande is also improved. Not only is the relationship between Doga, Unei and Xande emphasized a bit more from the former two’s perspective (again, more heavily in the unused text), but Xande’s actions actually have a direct impact on the four main characters, namely making them orphans that were raised by Topapa & Nina/Takka/King Sasune. Sure, the game doesn’t dwell heavily on it, but Xande is directly responsible for Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus being brought up by the people they ended up with. Maybe spinoffs like Opera Omnia can call more attention this- Oh. Right. Despite my grumbling, it’s clear that the remake’s portrayal of Xande influenced Opera Omnia’s take, with Xande’s desire for immortality being his primary motive, contrasted with Seymour’s belief that death is Really Great, You Guys.
Impact
In terms of Impact, the remake makes some key decisions: For starters, Xande’s act of stopping time was so unnatural that it caused the floating continent to ascend into the air. It’s implied that Owen had to repurpose his tech to ensure that the continent stayed up rather than falling to the ground, which in turn led to Desch being sealed away. This in contrast with the Famicom version where the Floating Continent was an Ancients project and Desch was sealed during the flood of light. And, of course, Cid is hinted to be from Saronia in this continuity, and some NPCs mention his disappearance. But I mentioned that Xande was a red herring, didn’t I? And while those aspects are good, how exactly is Xande a better villain? Well, that’s the thing. While the remake doesn’t change the amount of agency Xande has (on the contrary, it actually removes it), it actually does do so for the Cloud of Darkness. Xande is reinterpreted as a red herring; The party assumes for most of the game (or at least, the part where they’re aware of his existence) that Xande is behind all of the shenanigans up to that point. However, Unei notes that while she dodged the time stop due to being in the dream world, she noticed a great evil caused the earthquake on the Floating Continent. She then notes that Xande couldn’t have done it; He was busy being frozen like everyone else.
This is further cashed in by the Warriors of Darkness, who note that Xande fell under the control of the Cloud of Darkness and reveal that it was the one who sent the monsters to sink the Floating Continent. Xande himself still screwed up though as he was the one who inadvertently summoned it in the first place. The Famicom version does note that Xande himself was a puppet to the darkness, but goes no further than that. So yeah, the remake made Xande better. By not making him the main villain.
These days, Xande has seen a resurgence in use: He appeared in Brave Exvius as a Vision, he got a counterpart/reinterpretation in Final Fantasy XIV’s Syrcus Tower raids and he appears in Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia as a party member and recurring antagonist. While he is arguably still an underrated character and it could still be better, he is getting more love from SE now than he has been for a while.

Note
for the ask game, maybe 2, 6, and 42? for Monsters Splitting Hairs?
thanks! -⚙️
2. Go to your AO3 “Works” page, to the sidebar with all the filters, and click the drop-down arrow for “Additional Tags.” What are your top 3-5 most used tags? Do you think they accurately represent your writing habits?
Angst, Monster Dust (Undertale), Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Canon-Typical Violence.
Yeah that's... That's accurate. Monster Dust is less relevant now but I wrote a LOT of Undertale fics.
6. What’s one fact about the universe of [MSH] that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
Oh pfff. Uhhh... I'm trying to think of things that won't show up in the plot later in a major, spoiler-y way.
In the world of MSH, the world influences people as much as people influence the world. Magic is, for lack of a better word, contagious. More contagious some places than others.
A hunter wakes up one day after killing a salamander and they have scales, horns. A host of villagers fend off an assault of phantoms only to fight the next day some of them burn in sunlight. A tinkerer who works with redstone finds at some point they bleed it instead of blood. Magic is a disease, and the people who catch it are the people who are steeped in it day after day. The war was just as much about people as it was about the idea of order vs chaos, of fear and control, and how being resistant to change means you will be ruled by the terror of it.
Needless to say, when the Baron came to rid the valley of monsters, a lot of the Monster Hunters fled the valley in his wake. Too many eyes with split pupils, long hair hiding horns, and gauntleted hands belying claws.
42. Have you ever received a comment that particularly stood out to you for whatever reason?
Yeah. On Hound's Tooth, Ch. 10, there was someone who commented about how Doc's struggle in those chapters made them think of their own hearing implants, and how they'd gone through a similar struggle with the difference between their own ability and their prosthetics. When I wrote Hound's Tooth, I knew very little about prosthetics and the struggles people faced when it came to coping with them. Most of the experiences I drew on for the story was my personal struggles with trans body dysphoria, and some conversations I've had with a friend of mine who has an insulin pump.
It really meant a lot to me that, not only were they willing to talk about their implant and their insecurities involving it, but also that they were able to empathize with Doc. I was really writing something outside of my depth, and the fact that they could still relate to his struggle really bolstered my self-esteem in writing things I'm not familiar with.
Like it's fanfic. I know it's just fanfic. But media is a powerful tool for making people feel seen, and there are a lot of my personal struggles I have only ever seen in fanfic, popular media being what it is. I'm glad I could contribute to that.

Hehehehehe-
Don't imagine King quietly tracing his thumb over your lips leaning in and softly complimenting every feature on your face.
Don't imagine Shrike quietly tracing your hand while looking at it while admiring you and complimenting you.
Don't imagine Silver messing with your hair as he leans against the couch and you rest in his lap.

WIP: The Wildemyr River Chronicles
Part One:
Blackberry Season
Words: 15k/?????
Chapters: 4/15?
Genre: fantasy/adventure
Setting: fantasy New England
Synopsis:
Blackberry is a river rat with a bright future ahead of her. As the heiress to the Windy River Trading Company, she has been raised for one role: to take control of the company when her mother retires. It’s a role Blackberry, who dreams of adventure, has no desire to play, but she doesn’t expect her mother to retire any time soon so she thinks she has time to grow into it.
Then, when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is forced to take up the mantle of the company before she is ready. Beset with this pressure on one side and a sinister new enemy on the other, Blackberry runs away, allowing the toad salt barons to seize control in her absence.
Blackberry, who has never known true hardship, is on the run for her life in the wilderness. Joined by her best friend and some unlikely allies, she must decide what is worth fighting for and who, if anyone, she can trust.
Includes:
A traveling folk band
A miner’s strike
Talking animals in 19th century clothing.
A brief note on species:
All the characters are modeled after real world animals found in the eastern United States. Rattix and Lapine (singular: Lapin) are rats and rabbits, respectively. Anurans are larger grouping of frogs, toads, and salamander types, which are called Froggan, Toadix and I haven’t named the slander people yet cause there’s only one very minor character
Characters:
Blackberry Troutmonger: (species: rattix. Dark brown fur) Blackberry only recently came of age, and in some ways is still very much a child, and a selfish one at that. She is impulsive and at times incapable of taking things seriously, and would rather run from trouble than rise to the occasion. She carries a ceremonial rapier that isn’t even sharp, but has just enough bravado that it stops other creatures from challenging her.
Murtle: (species: froggan) Blackberry’s best friend and bodyguard, Murtle is a large bullfrog who carries a spear and is very tired of her nonsense. Murtle is not much older than Blackberry, but is much more mature and levelheaded. She thinks before she acts, and she has an answer for almost anything, until she and Blackberry are cast adrift in a hostile world and she must learn to think on her feet.
Moony: (species: Lapin. Cinnamon fur) Moony grew up working in a cannery with her sister Dusty. After her sister is killed in a machinery accident, Moony lead a worker’s strike that got her fired. At the time of the story she is wandering from town to town as one part of a folk duo Dandelion Revolt.
Cedar Timberbeast: (species: rattix. Black fur with salt and pepper flecks) Born to poor loggers in a squalid lumber camp, Cedar made his way down the river on a lumber barge, working at odd jobs along the way. By way of trading skills, he learned how to read and started writing speeches based on his life and experiences as a poor workingbeast. He met Moony while working at the fish cannery, and joined her in the strike when her sister died. He now travels with her as the second part of the folk band duo Dandelion Revolt

Give us a rundown on your OCs for the OC asks- (Name, bio, visual reference if possible, the world around them, trivia)
oh wow i love getting asked this, now i can infodump if thats okay. so i have lots of ocs in different settings, but for now i only have the brain energy to talk about the ones in the forgotten realms dnd setting
(idk how to add a cut, and this may be a bit long, sorry. also contains mention of sex work and some artistic elf nudity, so be warned)
solaxle zhosanzik (they/she)
this is the character i'm playing in an icewind dale campaign. they're a drow circle of spores druid, sof the sseab ethnic group (i have a lot of original drow worldbuilding). sseab culture has different queer terms than any human culture, but the closest english equivalent to her identity would be an omnisexual nonbinary trans woman. solaxle grew up in a large peasant family in the underdark, where they started learning druidry from the fungus people (myconids). she got stranded aboveground after a moon ceremony was interrupted by some mysterious mages, during which they were severely injured and their twin sulisszar was stolen away. before icewind dale, solaxle spent a few years deep in the woods at an inn called the hyacinth, where they did sex work, brewing and fermenting, gardening, potion making, and other odd jobs. she was healing, making money, and learning the local language before leaving north to go find sulisszar.
personality wise, solaxle is very shy, aloof, and rather awkward. they are curious, dreamy, and have a wild imagination. she is autistic and has sotos syndrome and a mobility disability, which means they use a elbow crutches and a walking chair (imagine a wheelchair but with magical legs, a la baba yaga house). their special interests are fungus, bugs, salamanders, weaving, amd thinking up stories about a creature called, naturally, mushroomander. they are semi-verbal and often communicate with sign language.
trivia:
solaxle has many tattoos and piercings, some of the former are magical
like all elves, solaxle is a mesocarnivore, and their fav food is spicy centipedes
she likes to stim by purring, playing with their hair, and being in the water
solaxle prefers to be naked but when they wear clothes they like loose, flowy dresses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
una (she/her)
una is a firborc (half orc, half firbolg) bard, and also solaxle's girlfriend. she's a bi-lesbian trans woman. una grew up travelling a lot, between the nomadic orc side of her family, and the forest-dwelling firbolg side of her family. her orc family produced a lot of musicians and , and una ended up settling in the city to study music and culinary arts more formally. she worked as a private chef and a private musician for a few wealthy patrons but ended up getting very burnt out by both their demands and the finicky, rule-bound world of nobility. her last gig was with solaxle's shitty baron ex at his country manor, but her and solaxle ran away back to the hyacinth inn and got into a relationship. now she works as a cook and an entertainer there, enjoying the more relaxed pace.
onstage una has a big personality but offstage she is prone to anxiety and overthinking. she's very caring and feels most fulfilled when she uses her bardic magic to heal people. she's also autistic and her special interests are songwriting, the spices of the world, ducks, and drawing. due to her orc and firbolg heritage she looks kind of mossy because she has both green and brown fur.
trivia:
shoes are sensory hell to una and she refuses to wear them
she can speak orcish, giant, common, drow sign language, and sseab drow dialect
una can play the mandolin, bagpipes, and bodhran
in firbolg tradition, she is vegetarian
i haven't drawn her yet but this picrew by stuffjademade gets the idea decently:
Tumblr media
ahmangiara (he/him)
ahmangiara (or mangi) is a silver dragon who often roams around in the shape of a beautiful hunk (species varies). he is pansexual and pretty apathetic about gender but people usually read him as a guy so he just goes with it. dragons don't usually have jobs in the conventional sense, but he is a cleric of the moon goddess eilistraee, who is worshipped by many drow on the surface (drow gods are somewhat localised and they believe that the deities who live with them in the underdark cannot reach the surface, so they have a different set of surface gods.) because he can fly, he acts as a lisaison betwewn many eilistraeen communities. he met una and solaxle at the hyacinth when he was one of solaxle's sex work clients, which developed into a relationship with both of them
he is gregarious, charming, and restless. in his long life he has seen a lot, so he is always looking for something new. he much prefers to solve conflicts through humour rather than violence, especially since he is aware how much more powerful he is than most people he hangs around. he is devout, but irreverent about it.
trivia:
ahmangiara collects art as he travels. not necessarily fancy stuff either
nonetheless he doesn't have a traditional hoard
he lives in a cave high in the mountains, and always smells of ozone
he never appears as a dragonborn, it's just too on the nose
hector (e/em/eir/eirs/eirself)
hector was the first one of the gang who came to live at the hyacinth, and e wont say how e got there first. e are a bugbear, nonbinary, mostly attracted to women. hector is taciturn and quiet and not much is known about em. not having one specific job, hector does whatever needs doing around the hyacinth; maintenance, gardening, anything but front desk. in eir spare time, e loves to play cards and board games with some of the regular guests. hector is afraid of water and the new moon, e cleans eirself with thorough brushing instead.
corncrake (he/she/they)
corncrake is the goblin who works the front desk at the hyacinth. he also does tattoos and piercings for whoever might want them. she hoards genders, snatching any they might come across, and they are aro-ace. goblins tend to treat gender like one big game. approx 20 years before icewind dale, corncrake was born from the cauldron of a wizard and escaped through the greenhouse. corncrale is hector's best friend, and the only one e confides in. she has done many of solaxle's tattoos, including the magical mycelium ones (solaxle's own recipe) on their legs that help the drow with their chronic pain. corncrake is a king of bat toad kitty looking creature.
sirsaecas (ve/vaer/vaer/vaers/vaerself)
sirsaecas is an older moon elf physician and abjuration wizard. vae are nonbinary and abrosexual (or the elven equivalent). after roughly three hundred years in academia vae are now a practicing doctor in the high forest and a regular at the hyacinth, where vae play cards with hector. sirsaecas was the one who tended to solaxle's injuries after the fateful moon ceremony. vae see vaerself as a sort of parental figure to solaxle, and helped them learn how to speak common. sirsaecas is hard of hearing and knows many spoken and signed languages, which is why vae were able to communicate with solaxle. vae are bookish and frank, and vaer bedside manner is a bit brusque, but they are still very caring and take their science/magic quite seriously

Birthday Tarot/Oracle Cards
Today is my birthday, and I recently got some new tarot/oracle card decks, so I decided to pull some cards and see what this next year of life has in store for me. I go back and forth sometimes about how much I believe in tarot and oracle cards, but this one was creepily accurate.
Tumblr media
Here are all four cards I pulled. From top, moving clockwise, the decks I used are:
Animal Totem Tarot by Leeza Robertson
Fantasy Cats Oracle by Paolo Barbieri
The Oracle by Calm Club
The Spirit Animal Oracle by Colette Baron Reid
Tumblr media
First card I asked "What is the theme of this year?" and pulled the Page of Wands, which is the Salamander. This card is about harnessing the creative energy of inspiration. Now is not the time for mastery, but for discovery and exploration. New adventures and experiences are coming, but I need to be careful not to burn out. This is the first step in the journey, so I need to be patient and kind to myself. Remember to take time for myself and stop and rest when needed.
Tumblr media
The second card I asked "What do I need to focus on this year?" and pulled Grooming. This confused me at first, because I thought it meant actually physical grooming. But it's more about self-care. "Pamper yourself and treat yourself as gently as you would a child." The only thing that matters now is personal comfort and self-care. I should make myself the priority. I need no one’s approval or permission. Work at the surface and move deeper at my own pace and private comfort zone. I know what is best for me. My body is my best friend, my temple, and my soul’s resting place. I must treat it with respect and spoil it frequently.
Tumblr media
For the third card I asked "What do I need to be aware of?" and pulled the Mountain. This card gives questions I should ask myself. Do I feel as big and strong as a mountain? How can I elevate my intentions? Where am I in my climb?
Tumblr media
This final card came after asking "Who is guiding me?" and I pulled the Fox. This card was actually very persistent. It was the first card I saw when I removed the deck from its box. While shuffling, I asked the question and a stack of about ten cards fell out. I said that was too many to be guiding me and put them back, but the fox was the first card in that group. I kept shuffling and the same thing happened, with the fox again being on top of the group that fell out. So clearly the fox wants to be heard.
This card says to let this clever spirit draw out my creativity as I adjust to rapidly changing circumstances with "resilience, grace, and astuteness." I should be attuned to what is happening within me and around me so that my quick thinking and creativity can lead me to better relationships and situations. This is a time for swift action of the mind, a time to think outside the box and notice the many ways in which I might make a move, aware of my surroundings and always clear on what I deserve and wish to co-create.
So yeah...lots about taking care of myself and allowing myself room to be creative. And I'm starting this year on a stress leave after burning out at work. Just yesterday I downloaded a program to help with getting back into writing, and I've been getting back into painting and crafting. Clearly the universe wants me on this path, and who am I to argue?

Stay (one-shot Heartcatch Precure movie fanfiction)
Summary: Honesty is valuable in drastic times.
To see everything in my collection before this one-shot, please do check out ‘Cure Narrative’ posted on both FF.net and Quotev😉
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Is it really alright to let them down like this?” the Baron asked the little boy, “The fashion show, I mean.”
“It’s fine,” he replied with a slight chuckle, pushing himself away from the balcony of their inn room.
“It’s not the place I want to be right now.”
Here they were in the capital of flowers, an odd duo never before seen, a human child with the spirit of a wolf, and a Desert Apostle with the fury of a dragon.
Until yesterday.
Until yesterday, the child was possessed by the wolf, be it a blessing or a curse. Until yesterday, the Desert Apostle was perpetually blinded by his hatred, unable to see a light that had been there all along.
But as the sun rose on a new page of their story, they both embraced the decision of living on with the other.
For the first time in... he could not recall, Olivier gulped down his breakfast, carefree, as any child would after an especially pleasant dream. Though in his case, it was not a dream.
His attention was fixed on his garlic baguette, but he kept an eye open for every last detail that went down around him while strolling down the pavement. They had saved Paris, they had saved the world, and he decided that allowing himself to drown in the beauty of that which they had saved was not such a bad idea.
No, it had not been a dream. The wolf, the dragon, the fire, the pain, the tears, the screaming, the flowers. They had all been real.
Now his eyes stopped on the cracking hand that limply dangled from the Baron’s shoulder — it had been real too.
“Baron?” he peeked quietly.
“Hmm?”
“What is happening... to your hand?”
The Baron halted for a brief, imperceptible millisecond, “It’s nothing. Just a vexing little defect now.”
Not feeling like relenting, the boy grabbed the Baron’s hand, like a child that just passed by with his father. The Baron flinched ever so slightly.
“Aha, it still hurts,” Olivier tactfully withdrew his hand.
The Baron glowered, “The pain will fade.”
“The cracks won’t.”
“...”
Chomping on his baguette.
Taking a sip from his coffee.
Trying to adjust his scarf (which was not there because it had been given to somebody special).
Running a hand through his long red hair.
And yet no words were exchanged. Perhaps it was to be expected, neither of them were good at expressing themselves in words honestly.
But the boy wished to believe that he had changed. He wished to believe that she had left him with not only a new name, but a new self. He wished to live up to the smile she had offered him when they parted.
So he must speak his mind, his heart. No longer would he hide.
“Father,” he started tentatively.
“What is it?” the Baron responded, trying (but failing) to refrain from being flustered.
“You will... stay with me, right?”
“Unless there are better places to go, I don’t see why not—“
“I’m not asking about that and you know it!” Olivier barked back.
After taking a painstakingly time-consuming sip from his coffee, he replied with apparent irritation in his voice, “Look, you know that I’m a Desert Apostle and—“
“I don’t care what you are,” Olivier insisted, “You are the only father I’ve ever had, I don’t want you going anywhere. I don’t want to wake up and find you in cracks one day!”
The Baron averted his eyes, gazing at anywhere but the child in fear of letting his emotions slip out. Sure, the sun did rose on a new page of their story, but he knew this tale was meant to end on a starless night.
One day, he would dissipate into sand and perish from this world. That day, this boy would be devastated. Devastated over a creature who attempted to exterminate his race for over 400 years.
Misplaced love. Misplaced affection. Misplaced hope. The child was perhaps too naive to foresee the inevitable pain and sorrow in their shared future when he declared them as family.
Or perhaps he was too intelligent, only putting on a facade.
Was the Baron not the same? He was a Desert Apostle, their time would flow differently. Even in his current condition, it was not entirely inconceivable that he would outlive the child. What would he do then? What else was left in his world except this young boy?
The Baron could not comprehend this… this oddity in humans. Family, friends, lovers, everyone is destined to rot away one day. So what was the point in opening your heart to someone who is destined to break it?
“I… can’t make any promises,” the Baron answered, “But I will try to live, if that is what you wish for.”
To his surprise, Olivier was satisfied, and grinned with a soft “ehehe”. The Baron could not help but succumb to the oddity of this world as well and smiled like an idiot.
He raised his broken hand to stroke the child’s head. The nerves on his palm were all wrecked, and he could no longer feel the warmth of the boy who had been with him throughout these few years, but that did not make the child’s honest words any less warm.
He decided to stay, to continue putting on a facade, to keep on believing that their pages were filled with flowers until the ending. He could not help but think maybe that was how humans managed through their short lives, the lack of a promise of eternity, maybe that faith was what humans hold onto instead of hatred and solitude.
What was it that Cure Blossom liked to say? That people change when they encounter others? Well, perhaps it was true after all, he mused, as he muttered under his breath, “I’ve lost, Cure Ange. Hatred has lost.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The End
A/N: And in case someone read this without remembering every detail in the Heartcatch movie, this ‘Cure Ange’ is from the Heartcatch universe, not the Hugtto universe.
How ‘bout I write a post-timeskip fic where Salamander actually dies? I’m just working on murdering someone else in another fandom, I can handle death better now... hopefully 🙈

Tumblr media
"We believe that you three was summoned to save us from what we've become. The worst versions of ourselves."
Man, everyone really has become the worst of themselves haven't they?
Tumblr media
Even when at it's height, when Toads, Frogs, Newts and Salamanders were all completely united as one overarching people, working under one banner in the days of the Empire, Axolotl's and Olms were missing from that unity.
Tumblr media
The Olms didn't like the way the nation was going, but rather than try and fix things, and try and steer the nation away from the course it was going, they instead isolated themselves in their own city, far, far away from the troubles of the world, hoping it would never reach them.
Thus they became the first part of the nation to segregate themselves from the rest, while putting their head in the sand.
Tumblr media
Then after the fall, the Newts, under the leadership of a Salamander instituted the caste system, with themselves at the top.
They isolated themselves in the wealthy and prosperous capital, while hoarding what remained of the technology of old, and caring little about bettering the lives of the other parts of Amphibia.
Tumblr media
The Toads, though not the ones who instated the feudal structure, took their place in the new age after the fall, and became little more than Robber Barons, where they were encouraged to embrace their absolute worst impulses if they wished to advance up the ranks, while being expected to make lives miserable for everyone else.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the Frogs became the peasant farming class, with all that comes with it for good or ill. Creating thousands and thousands of isolated, well knit communities, that nonetheless are distrustful of and hostile to outsiders as such communities tend to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This has also lead to several communities of frog Cannibal serial killers being well and active.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for Salamanders and Axolotl's... I have no idea. We have no idea why they are so incredibly sparce(With Andrias and Valeriana being the only two we've seen), and how that would relate to them "Becoming the worst versions of themselves"(I guess Andrias represents the race as a whole which is... Kinda unfair to be honest).
And then there is Axolotls who aren't as rare, but other than Salamanders, they are the rarest of the species of Amphibians.
I have no idea how they have apparently embraced the worst parts of themselves.
