Happy birthday to one of the true giants of the German Baroque, Georg Philipp Telemann (Mar. 14*, 1681 - June 25, 1767).
*According to the Old Style calendar; by the New Style calendar his birthdate is March 24, but I'll take any excuse to post his music.

About Those Tenor Violins...
If tenor violins (aka tenor violas) were such an integral part of the string consort in the 17th century, why don't we have more surviving examples of them? Horrifyingly enough, this luthier says that most of them were recut into treble violins in the 1800s when the tenor violin had fallen out of fashion and lost its monetary value.
His assertion is that if you find a three century old violin with f-holes way too far apart and dangerously close to the purfling, it's probably an altered tenor violin. The thought had never even occurred to me, but it makes perfect sense... in addition to opening a whole can of worms about what it means to own and play one of ye olde Cremonese violins.
And to make things even weirder, there was a brief revival of interest in the tenor violin in Germany in the late 1800s that was also subsequently forgotten. People keep wanting to make fetch happen but at this point the regime of (treble)violin-(modern)viola-cello-bass is so baked into Western music that I don't think the tenor violin is ever going to be a significant thing again.
Click through to the link for contemporary paintings of the tenor violin in use and photos of extant intact tenor violins.
The best modern-day approximation of one of these bad boys would be the biggest viola you could get your hands on, but Nate Tabor argues that it wouldn't be as ergonomic as the original instruments were. The modern instruments have completely different proportions. I don't think there's any winning here unless you can shell out for a proper replica of a tenor violin... which alas, I cannot.
