nintendo should make a pikmin show series with the same style as the short movies
i feel like they should be based off pikmin 1 so new fans can learn more about the series and so old fans can reminisce on what they love. they could do 30 episodes (one for each in game day) and the show could just be about olimar trying to get his ship parts and whatever silly hijinks the pikmin get into
the show wouldnt even really need any dialogue because the shorts portrayed their stories well with no dialogue at all
if nintendo even wanted to they could do a season 2 and base that off pikmin 2 and eventually do the same with a third and fourth season (maybe even a 5th if they decide to include hey! pikmin)
i think it would just be great to have a retelling of the stories in a show format and i personally would rather prefer that than if they decide to make a movie

Did another Pikmin 4 demo playthrough, this time going for 100%. Lined up treasures next to each base site so I could grab them all without running afoul of the Sparklium limit. Also did each cave with no treasure collecting so I could revisit on my collect everything day. Ended this run with zero casualties.
Revisiting caves showed me some important things about them. Enemies stay defeated, but treasures revert to their original position. Wild Pikmin will also appear to be collected again, so you can bump up your Ice Pikmin numbers that way.
Also nearly missed the buried treasure that doesn't show in the map. At first I was worried Oatchi digging up buried treasure infringed on the White Pikmin too much, but thinking about it more, it was the right decision.
You can have only three Pikmin types with you, and whites being the only way to even detect certain treasure would make them feel too mandatory. Not a problem with other games where you use varied squads, but now with you only being able to use three at a time it becomes a problem.
Didn't occur to me in the first paythrough, but you can leave Pikmin in the ground at base camp. However their time to flower appear to be based on real time spent at base camp rather than in game time. Full in game days didn't get them to flower, but wandering around base camp did.
Fell short of the platinum medal in the challenge cave by literally one point, it was the last golden nugget. And I wasn't able to retry it for a platinum, cave was sealed off. ARGH! Please let me retry those caves, that was the whole point of mission mode.
Crazy that I missed the presence of Blue Pikmin in this demo entirely. I had a lot of trouble getting the blue onion, I needed to use Oatchi buffed up to the strength of ten Pikmin. If you don't get that upgrade do you just have to come back when you've either gotten another fralic or twenty wild blues/flying? Wonder if the ice bomb could last long enough to get the Blue Onion?
After I snagged every treasure I spent the rest of the day bolstering blue numbers and setting up a berry harvesting operation. Felt nice to get that going.
Had to have it pointed out by Collin, but you can set actions to shortcuts. Feels a lot better with disband and switch on dedicated buttons.
Still need to get in the mindset of fully using Oatchi, the way he's simultaneously a super Pikmin and a second captain trips me up. Took me too long to remember about charging into walls to knock down treasures.
I unlocked Oatchi's ability to swim on my last day. I wonder if it's based on the day count?
Happy that Piklopedia is also back. But I feel like having dedicated side characters for treasure inventory and piklopedia misses part of what made them great, you got more insight into the characters you were playing as. The interface looks like there will be multiple authors again at least, like 3 Deluxe.
Spent some time cycling through 'let's chat' dialogue at base camp. Everyone seems to have at least two responses, Shepherd has quite a few that gives background info on Russ and Collin. Also noticed you can get her captain log as well.
In the initial Olimar part I took the time to collect all of his Pikmin, absolutely destroyed that enemy. Very excited for when I get to properly explore that area in the main game.
I was both impressed and shocked that the story dialogue changes depending on your order of actions. I rescued Dingo and did the Dandori Battle in the same day, and the next morning meeting reflected that. Felt more fluid than Tears of the Kingdom acknowledging similar plot situations.
Looks like curing the leaf people will be a key part of the plot. Olimin made it sound like he viewed the transformation as a survival tactic. They mentioned the doctor is named Yonny, and that's who trailers show giving night expeditions. So maybe the sap you collect with Glow Pikmin is needed to revert the transformation?

Quick Game reviews: 2023 (Part 1!)
Hey everyone! Apologies for the screenshots stolen from google; at the point I compiled most of this I deleted my Xitter account and didn't have the screenshots I typically share from there.
Additionally, since Tumblr has a 30 image limit this is going to be split into 2 parts! How exciting.
Let's get it goin
This group of 8 games were beat in the first week of 2023! Do not set such goals; games are made to be fun on your own time and turning it into a job is a lot like seeing how the sausage is made. But I digress;
Tumblr media
Tinykin (Steam)
A very fun 3D puzzle-platformer collectathon. It has many pikmin-like elements in that you control a bunch of little guys to carry, push, or interact with various objects in fun ways, but I would hesitate to call it a full Pikmin like game because they really serve as collectibles which when you have enough of let you access certain areas. There's really not strategy element to it. But, it's still a fun 3D platformer, and I recommend it
Tumblr media
Super Kiwi 64 (Steam)
This is a weird one. Another 3D platformer that will last you at most 1 hour, Super Kiwi 64 is an unsettling but intriguing little experience where you navigate a number of levels with challenges and items to collect. I say unsettling because the music has a very mysterious vibe, and the environments go from the bright forest above to some almost liminal, dark areas devoid of interactable characters and littered with strange skeletons and glyphs. It was interesting; I would say pick it up on sale if you're looking for a chill hour of playtime, but it's also only $3, so you do you
Tumblr media
Toree 2 (Steam)
Another retro 3D platformer that's more like the PS1 era, Toree 2 is focused on quick, optimizable movements and levels design to be speedrun and 100%'d. This one is also only an hour, but also only a buck to play! Keeping with the unsettling theme, it's levels are nostalgic and bright, but the main antagonist seems to be drawing on some glitchy, bizarre power that causes some strange effects to happen in levels. It's a small but fun nostalgic experience that it's difficult and a well done series of levels
Tumblr media
Toree 3D (Steam)
Same review as above, the sequel! Sure, the 3D may lead you to believe it's different mechanically, but it was already 3D so it's really just more of the same.
Tumblr media
Dead Estate: Bombs Away Update (Steam)
This update added a new character, some new enemies, and some alternate rooms. Again, my Dead Estate recommendation is high for those who are into the rogue-like, top down arcade shooters, and this free update was more goodness to complete, though BOSS can very easily be broken with a number of explosion-based items.
Tumblr media
Mechanibot (Steam)
Is this auto chess? I don't know what auto chess is as a genre. kids these days
Mechnibot is a top down tower defense like game with rogue-like elements. You start off as mechanibot, a tiny robot who has been tasked to fix the sun and has a number of robots to choose from. Robots act as "towers" that grant certain effects depending on their type and description, and can even have multiple types and effects. Your job is to keep these robots alive and attacking by frantically running around and placing them in and out of danger. You get money for each wave, which can be spent on given options at the end of each wave to upgrade robots, get new ones, and some upgrades for yourself as well. It's a lot of fun, a good 8 hours of content and replayable. Try out the demo and see if it's for you
Tumblr media
Minit Fun Racer (Steam)
Another short game! This is a spin-off from Minit, and is much more arcade like. You start off on your little bike and have to avoid all the obstacles and collect coins to get to the end. You won't be able to progress very far for a while, so you get upgrade to last longer and get some upgrades for your scooter until you eventually can. Took me about an hour and a half to get all the achievements, but there was surprisingly a lot of cute hidden stuff along the way. Again, a fun arcadey experience with lots of charm for almost nothing.
Tumblr media
Chico and the Magic Orchards DX (Steam)
This one was fun! I was on a big GameBoy kick this year, and the DX for this actually came out I was playing it. It was a little aggravating with some of the boss fights, but overall I had a fun time playing it! Recommended for a nice little nostalgic GBC puzzle game, would definitely be best on a portable console.
Tumblr media
A Little to the Left (Switch DL)
I wanted to play more simple games, and this one seemed like a lot of fun as a recommendation from a friend. It's a little short, but it speaks to me as someone who hops between obsessing over doing things perfectly and finding it difficult todo anything at all. I especially like the way there are multiple solutions for several puzzles, which when compared with another player let you understand the different ways people can "organize" the same thing. A casual puzzle game that's worth a try, though don't expect hours and hours of entertainment from it
Tumblr media
Game & Watch Gallery 3 (Switch NSO: Game Boy Color)
I owned Game & Watch Gallery 2 as a young'un, and remember playing it endlessly so it was nice to give this one a go when the GB/C update for Nintendo Switch Online Dropped. As the third entry, it contains a lot less common Game & Watch games, but the modern spin on them using Mario characters gives it a lot of personality. Honestly, I'm surprised we don't see more of these games remade in recent Mario Parties as homages or just high score games you can do.
If you've never played a Game & Watch Gallery, I'd give this one a try as its fun, addicting little bites of gameplay are very enjoyable and there's loads of unlockable bonuses to keep your attention, but if you find you don't like a game or two in it it can be a slog to get the 1000 points to finish the whole game.
Tumblr media
Wario Land 3 (Switch NSO: Game Boy Color)
For those unfamiliar with the Wario Land series (and yet somehow found me?), it's a very fun series of platformers which focus more on puzzle solving/execution than your typical Mario platformer. Wario Land 3 specifically took Wario Land 2's "Impossible to get a game over" formula and ran with it, also making this a fun little Metroidvania in the process. It's definitely among my favorite in the sereis, though it's held back by an obsession with its own mini-golf game which it has you play one every level (every level has 4 exits). Overall it's a great entry in Mario spinoffs and a very fun time, but be prepared to be frustrated by some pretty annoying jumps and a silly mini game
Tumblr media
Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins (Switch NSO: Game Boy)
I have a love-hate relationship with this one. I never got to play it fully when I was a kid, but returning back to it I loved it. But it's way, waaaaaay too short. With 6 worlds with 2-3 levels tops, and with a frustratingly focused screen due to the resolution of the original Screen, it's not got a lot of staying power. Would love to see it as a pallette in Super Mario Maker 3 though.
It's fun, but short. Don't expect to spend a lot of time with this, but hey; you're probably playing this as NSO sub or for free online so no loss with this classic
Tumblr media
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ (Switch NSO: Game Boy Advance)
The original WarioWare! It's fun, but again pretty short. Worthj a play if you've never tried out a WW game before, but the best WarioWare portable experience is Going to be WarioWare Gold on the 3DS and the more recent switch escapades. Additionally, this doesn't have the Wario World functionality, which obviously it can't but that was part of the reason I played it back in the day. Good for some random fun, doesn't stand out as an experience vs the more recent WarioWares
Tumblr media
Dead Estate: Heaven & Hell update
This is the update the game needed; it drastically improved the floor spawning algorithm, added a lot more interesting playstyles for each character, and added more enemies and gimmicks to keep you replaying over and over again. There are more updates past this that improve the game further, but with this I can whole-heartedly recommend this as a very fun and addictive rogue-like.
Tumblr media
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (Steam)
What a wonderful April Fools game. My favorite game dev pranks are the one where they just silently drop a whole-ass spinoff.
A wonderful jaunt in the Sonic Universe! It's no secret that I love Sonic, and I've been keeping up with the IDW comic series (it's very good) since it started releasing a few years back and it's a wonderful fleshing out of characters and side-stories that main Sonic games will never address. This murder-mystery + special stage minigame was written and produced by the same writes on the IDW comics, and it's a very fun experience to see them get to make an interactive game with some humor while still getting to keep and flesh out the characters we never really get to see in Sonic Games. I highly recommend this for any Sonic fan, and hope this means we'll be seeing more in the way of sonic spin-offs in the future.
...
Also the IDW comic series is great! It takes a little to start with the first arc, but after that it's all I want out of a Sonic Comic. Tangle and Whisper are also cool as hell.
Tumblr media
Lunistice (Steam)
This was a fun albeit short3D platformer, also looking like a PS1 original. I unfortunately didn't 100% it so I didn't finish the story and get the nuances of it, but as a platformer it was a fun romp. I'd recommend it as a fun labor of love, but not as something you can really dig your teeth into
Tumblr media
Pizza Tower (Steam)
This game is really good! Feels great, first time in a while I've been like "Oh this is fun but really hard, I don't think I'll get good enough to 100% it" and then slowly but surely decided to. The only issue is some kinda old racist tropes being used in the western world which they really didn't need, but gameplay, visually, and musically this is a masterpiece. An essential part of any platformer fan's collection to have tried.
... If only they hadn't added more achievements I'd still have it 100%'d on Steam
Tumblr media
Super Mario Bros. Peach's Adventure (SNES Classic romhack)
I saw this in a bit on Vinny's fullsauce channel about weird Mario hacks, and the only premise for this being weird was that Peach's design is nonstandard. It became apparent when he started playing that actually a ton of work and love went into it, so for the sake of the bit he moved on. I Proceeded to hack my SNES Classic so I could play this and boy was it worth it.
This romhack is adorable! IT's full of collectible's, has really fun levels, tons of references for any longtime Mario fan, and carries a nice aesthetic of the original SMB but with SMW's features so it's looks like a really amazing Mario Maker game. I loved it!
Tumblr media
Across-Stitch (Itch.io)
It's Picross, but with colors! I'm a big running fan of Nintendo Picross games, and this came up on my recommended on itch so I decided to give it a try. Very fun, has a lot of puzzles, and is just a fun time waster. I got it on itch (linked), but honestly it'd be perfect for my phone had I done that
Tumblr media
PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2 (Steam)
So this one's kinda weird; Pac-man CE was one of my favorite games on the 360 (I didn't have many), and I thought the sequel would be it but just better since they'd solve the scoring problems. It was actually just like more of the same but with some different styles of play, and I found myself getting tired of it pretty fast. I have nostalgic memories of 1 so I'm probably looking at it with rose-tinted goggles, but this is a very passable arcade experience.
STEREOGRAM (itch.io)
I cannot in good conscience recommend you play this game, as looking at both screen this closely to do the stereogram and crossing your eyes for extended periods of time can cause permanent damage to your eyesight.
... But as a concept it was really neat! I did beat it with frequtn 5 minute breaks, and it only took a couple hours. Very basic metroidvania with fixed rooms to make the effect work.
Tumblr media
Charm Studies (itch.io)
A very cute mixed visual novel and picross game! I like picross and this caught my eye, so I gave it a shot. Fun, but a bit short. But also free! Maybe try it out if you're not sure about picross yourself
Tumblr media
Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut
Longtime C7 fans will know I like Shantae quite a lot. And have an unhealthy amount of Shantae Merch. So when my Sister was visiting and I was feeling particularly self-conscious about playing games over the mic with friends, I decided to whip out this classic and finally 100% it. Shantae holds a special place in my heart for me, because I grew up an incredible prude with absolutely no interest in the kind of scandalous things that friends were starting to bring up. Whenever they tried to get me to watch Anime and watch stuff that had some fanservice, I felt wildly uncomfortable just because I didn't know how to process what I was seeing (and had undiagnosed anxiety and ADHD issues).
Shantae was the first time I saw something "suggestive" (read: cute girls in light outfits) tied with a style of gameplay I liked, and allowed me to kind of stop hating myself whenever these things came up. With this being a DSi game, meaning I could download it with nobody knowing I did, and the rave reviews it was getting by being one of the first DSi games available, I finally decided to purchase it. I loved the series ever since!
Getting back to this play-session, I decided to revisit this classic (my first experience with the series) and play it 100% with all the bells and whistles, including speedrun achievements. I got them all! For people who know what Shantae is, this is an essential entry into the series and a contender for top 3. If you've not played a Shantae game but like Metroidvania's, this or the recently released Seven Sirens are the best starting points
And yes, just to brag, that screenshot of the steam stats does mean I got the worst ending last and optimized my playtime.
My personal Shantae tier list, best to worst
Seven Sirens
Risky's Revenge tied with Pirate's Curse
Half-Genie Hero
Shantae GBC
Risky's Revolution, an unfinished GBA game in the series, was also announced to be resurrected and releasing next year, which is rad!
.. Anyway, onto another topic
Tumblr media
TUNIC (Steam, played over steam link on the TV with a Controller away from the internet)
This was a hard one to get into, but a very fun one once I got the difficulty barrier and begun understanding the games' mechanics. I did end up getting the best ending, but not 100% all the achievements since that would've required more playthroughs, and the magic of figuring out the world would've been gone.
The use of the manuals, sudden realizations of mechanics, and really fun moments with some beautiful areas and items to figure out make this a wonderful game. Some of the bossess are.. not great, but on the whole I highly recommend this experience to people who want to feel what it was like in pre-internet days, having to solve a game's puzzles by charting out the world and coming to a deep understanding of its mechanics to find all the secrets. If you're easily frustrated or aren't a fan of 2D Zelda though, this is a pass
Tumblr media
Cult of the Lamb (Steam)
This was one I was not expecting to get into. I saw it and thought "Hmm, I like games with a base-building aspect to them sometimes but a lot of the time that really gets in the way of the actual game." And to be honest, there were a few moments where juggling the two kinda did. Additionally, and this is a personal taste thing, the visuals of Don't Starve kinda don't appeal to me, so seeing a more cutesy version of that wasn't something I thought I'd love
... But this game is phenomenal! An incredibly fun rogue-lite game that mixes with base and resource management in a way that doesn't actually exclude someone who would like one over the other!
Tumblr media
This was another one I 100% after a LOT of playtime and attempts at damageless bosses, but it was very worth it.
Tumblr media
LEGO Builder's Journey (Steam)
I've been on Lego for the past few years, and this seemed like a fun little game that wasn't tied to any existing franchise so I gave it a go. It's an environmental puzzle game, where each micro-level has its own little puzzle where you need to figure out which pieces interact to (most of the time) get your little 1x1x2 lego guy to the other end of the stage.
It's very cute, and while a bit short ended up being the perfect length for this kinda game. The only thing I'd put against it is my computer had a rough time running it because they really wanted all the shaders and reflections to look great, so keep that in mind.
Tumblr media
The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap (Switch Online)
This is a weird one. I could've sworn I loved this game as a kid, and in fact this is what got me into 2D Zelda's because it was so much fun! Revisiting it though, I find it's one of the weaker entries in the series. The visuals look great, the story is as charming as you'd expect, and as someone who was really into windwaker and picked this up I was hooked, however it is by far one of the most tedious Zelda's I've played. The Dungeons are all relatively straightforward; while some offer an interesting mechanic from being small and making you think how larger objects affect the world, they still felt very linear.
Additionally, I had no idea just how grindy this game was at the time in comparison! Tons of the sidequests and rewards are visible fomr your first pass in an area, so as a result every time you get a new item you're tempted to go back and see if helps. The NPCs often block places as an obstacle that just move after a while (or a result of kinstone fusing), which made the game a lot more frustrating to remember things by. Kinstones themselves are annoying to find and even worse to use, as NPCs will randomly decide if they want to fuse or not. So to get everything you need to frequently visit and revisit the same places and NPCs over and over again, with no way of knowing if that random person has something you need to fuse with or is actually just a random person.
Additionally the figure collection, something I adored in WindWaker despite it being ridiculously grindy there too, has been reduced to a Gacha machine. A heart piece is locked behind collecting them all, which means for 100% completion you have to collect ALL the figurines, including ones only available after you clear your file, making the final heart piece effectively useless. Worse, the act of collecting them is a gargantuan time sink; it takes loads of time to go through dialog, even more to collect the rupees you need, and the "chance" system doesn't quite work how you'd expect. With me cheating to get 999 rupees in gambling all the time and going through all the prompts to get all these, it took me 3 hours. That's quadrupled at least if you play the game properly.
Never 100% this game, but as far as 2D zelda's go this is definitely not a terrible entry; just a bit uninspired. I'd recommend ALTTP, ALBW, or Link's Awakening over this myself.
Tumblr media
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)
I would have some fun screenshots but deleted my twitter so they're gone now, oh well.
I'm not gonna go too far in depth on this one; It's breath of the Wild but >2x larger with some wild building mechanics and a really good story. A fantastic game that may see age as the open-world genre gets saturated, but quite frankly one of the best games you'll ever see on the switch.
Tumblr media
Annalynn (Switch)
I followed the artist on Twitter (when I still had one) and really liked the retro feel of it. It's a fun classic arcade game, however like some of those classic arcade games I found myself frustrated by its difficulty while still not grasping the hardest nuances of its mechanics enough to get good at it. It's fun, but I'd see if it's for you by watching the videos first.
Part 2 coming later today!

So Pikmin Four comes out to today, and I wrote a quick little fanfic to celebrate
I wrote it months ago and only did minor editing since, heck, the title is a wip but whatever. The premise behind it was the only Pikmin game I can play is Pikmin bloom. (I can’t lead these critters to battle or quests, I would be devastated when my incompetence got them killed) and I finally got the third kind of decor Pikmin based off the weather. With that wide brimmed hat of a flower, I began to design a Pikmin OC, then I incorporated some speculation about Pikmin extinction, and pretty soon I had a story with some themes. So yeah, it’s pretty short, and I hope y’all enjoy. Tagging @wildmin and @thefingerfuckingfemalefury, I hope y’all enjoy this little story about a tiny community. Also here’s art of the OC, ignore that one pixel that haunts me.
Tumblr media
Observations of a Colony
It has been theorized by Hocotatian and Koppaite researchers alike that Pikmin are missing a key part of the lifecycle. When Pikmin are sprouted by their Onions, they are unable to pluck themselves from the earth. No amount of Pikmin seem capable of pulling a seedling from the soil, and without being able to pluck themselves, they lack and ability to reproduce. They can feed an Onion to produce more Pikmin, but those Pikmin will remain buried, unable to effectively be born.
Some researchers believe the Mamuta once would pluck Pikmin, given that they will plant Pikmin in the soil if they catch them. But if they once possessed this behavior, they no longer practice it. And without a way for a Pikmin colony to replenish their numbers, their population dwindles. It is possible that within our generation, most breeds of Pikmin will go extinct.
But some Pikmin may survive, as one population of Blue Pikmin has developed an unusual strategy for reproducing.
It is morning on PNF-404. A blue Onion descends from the clouds, the bulbous plant extending its four stems to dock with the soil. Blue Pikmin begin to descend from their living nest, each are roughly 33 mm long, with two arms, two legs, a head and torso, and a stem ending in either a leaf, a bud, or a flower. These are the characteristics of all Blue Pikmin, though these are still unusual. Atop their heads are upside-down flowers, worn almost like wide-brimmed hats, while ponchos made of two large petals hang over their torsos.
As they filed out from the Onion, one Pikmin hung back, staring up at the towering trees surrounding their home. The forest was humid, thick mist filled the atmosphere and puddles covered the forest floor. Dew lingered on the many leaves of the massive trees, the forest almost glistened.
This Pikmin we will refer to as “Brim,” given their large hat. Though, unlike the other Blue Pikmin in this group, they wore mittens and boots made of petal scraps. The reason for this unique behavior became evident as they stepped forward, and a glob of mud splattered their thigh. Brim immediately shuddered and began to frantically wipe off the gunk, cringing at the texture.
Brim suffered from overstimulation, certain sensations like mud and other textures stressed them greatly, so they wore makeshift mittens and boots to try to avoid touching the gunk. It mostly worked, as long as they were careful where they stepped.
Another Blue Pikmin hummed at them, and Brim startled before wadding through the forest towards their fellow. The two of them hurried to the base of a dead tree, one that had been jabbed with chunks of crystals. The Pikmin began to climb up the crystal handholds, heading towards the lowest branch of the tree.
The two of them began to crawl down the branch, coming down to a curved twig. The two of them hummed out a tune as they pushed and shoved at the twig, straining the brittle wood until it snapped off, falling to the forest floor.
Brim and the other Pikmin began to climb back down, as five other Blue Pikmin heaved up the twig and began carrying it over to the Onion. They too hummed out. Melody as they hauled the thing over their heads.
At the base of the Onion’s landing site was a single seedling, they had been planted a few days ago, and now were blooming. The five Pikmin carried the twig over to the seedling, before digging the wood into the ground. As it stood there two other Pikmin ran up, carrying a long blade of grass over their head.
Brim and their fellow had joined up with the group, and the nine Blue Pikmin got to work. The blade of grass was draped over the twig before one end was tied to the seedling’s stem. Then the group hurried to the other end of the blade of grass and began to heave, turning the twig and grass into a rudimentary pulley.
The simple machine strained as the nine of them hummed out a “work song.” The troupe yanked on the grass as the seedling it was tied to wiggled in the soil, before at last the new Pikmin was plucked from the earth. The new Blue Pikmin fell on their backside from the force of the tug. Three of the older Blue Pikmin wadded over to them and began humming a tune at them, and the newly plucked seedling began to match the trio’s tone.
Their pulleys were primitive tools, but despite their simplistic nature those tools had enabled the Blue Pikmin to pluck themselves, giving them the chance to survive. We do not know for certain where this behavior began, but there is a suspicion based on earlier research.
Brim wandered away as five other Blue Pikmin began to head off into the muddy forest, searching for prey. Brim instead bent over and scooped up an acorn cap, and began to carry it through the swampy terrain.
They crept around the puddles, taking long winding paths to avoid wadding in deep mud. Brim hummed to themself, though their song was less musical than the “work songs,” more frantic and uneven. As they walked their large eyes searched around, both to keep themself clean and to search for food. The Onion must be fed to create new Blue Pikmin, and the Pikmin needed nectar to bloom.
As Brim walked there winced as a splash sounded behind them. They turned to see a pink shriveled creature charging them, and they let out a whimper before scrambling away.
This was a female Himeagea mandibulos, or more commonly a Sheargrub. As a member of the Mandiblard family her legs and wings had atrophied completely, giving her a larval appearance. Female Sheargrubs were harmless to Pikmin, but they did enjoy pursuing them. And Brim for their part sprinted away.
Their feet splashed against the mud as they ran, splattering their thighs. Brim whimpered once more, and the acorn cap was dropped from their mittens as they began to try to wipe off the much even as they still ran.
The Sheargrub was undeterred and continued the chase, squirming across the ground. She drew closer and closer, whatever Brim feared about her drove them to wail. Finally, Brim relented and dived for a puddle, leaping into the water.
Brim shivered at the cold temperature, but they were a Blue Pikmin. And as a Blue Pikmin, they were the only type of Pikmin capable of swimming. And indeed they kicked their feet and began to stroke across the puddle, even as the Sheargrub cautiously follows.
The Blue Pikmin resurfaced on the other side, dripping wet. They shook themselves off, flicking water from their leaf, before resuming wading through the mud. They moved slowly and cautiously, trying to have only their booties get soaked by the muck. As they squirmed they looked back, the Sheargrub was not adapted for the water, only recently had a mutation begun to spread letting them survive in the water at all. But even with her limited speed, she was keeping pace with them navigating the mud.
Finally, the mud drew shallow, and Brim began to trot. Their purser still was trudging through the water, so the gap was now widening between them. As Brim looked ahead their eyes widened, they had not realized where they were.
A stump lay before them, one with a hole dug under one side of it. In front of it was a ramp made of sticks and rocks, allowing a Pikmin to climb on top of it.
Brim climbed up the ramp cautiously, their mittens flapping at their side. They had been here before, most of their colony had. Underneath the stump was a chamber containing a Violet Candypop Bud. A strange plant, the Candypops had unusual effects on Pikmin, though the effect varied based on color.
They reached the top of the ramp, coming to a small false Onion made of stacked twigs. As they drew near there was a heaving grunt, and a Purple Pikmin walked out of the crude nest.
Purple Pikmin were among the biggest type of Pikmin yet observed, able to carry much more than any other known Pikmin and do far more damage. They were bulbous with large heads and bodies and had tendrils growing out of the sides of their heads. This one had once been a Blue Pikmin but had chosen to dive into the Violet Candypop and change their type. This barred them from their former Onion and cut them off from the puddles of the forest, so they depended on supplies from the Blue Pikmin.
The Pikmin not only was big but was dressed in armor. Unlike the petal clothes of Brim, the Purple Pikmin wore the shell of a large Acorn for armor, and its cap as their helmet. They were a protector of this stump and they were dressed to drive away the weaker beasts of the forest. For the sake of clarity, they will hence be referred to as “Sentry.”
Brim whimpered and hummed at the Purple Pikmin, but Sentry only shook their head and pointed behind them. The Sheargrub was wandering around now, waiting at the base of the ramp.
The Blue Pikmin flinched and began rubbing their skin, pointing back at the Sheargrub. Sentry shook their head in disagreement and rubbed their chest armor. Brim winced, looking back at her.
Sentry tapped the stump with their foot and pointed down at The remnant of the tree. Carved into the stump was a crude picture of a Red Pikmin. Red Pikmin were the same height as Blue Pikmin but lacked the gills and mouth of the latter, instead, Red Pikmin had long thin noses. This particular Red Pikmin had a large spiky nut stuck hanging on their stem, giving them almost a shell. Their torso was slanted and it looked like their arms extended into long legs.
Seasons ago, researchers observed a Red Pikmin in a meadow that had sprouted through a chestnut, the seed weighing them down and barring them from their Onion. They relied on twigs as makeshift crutches to support the weight of the nut and mostly were ignored by their fellow Red Pikmin, left to fend for themself.
Whether or not this carving referred to the subject dubbed "Spiky," was difficult to say. Onions could land almost anywhere on the planet, these Blue Pikmin might have encountered Spiky and the Red Pikmin could have left an impression on them. Some speculated Spiky’s use of crutches as leverage to support their chestnut’s weight was what inspired this colony to develop their pulleys. Of course, they were very different tools, but the possibility was worth considering.
Others also suggested it might be the basis behind this colony wearing something akin to clothes, given Spiky’s shell was capable of shielding them from blows from predators. Sentry’s acorn armor certainly born a resemblance to Spiky’s chestnut.
Whatever was said, Brim relented, Sentry reached over to them and heaved them into their arms. With a step the Purple Pikmin chucked them, hurling Brim at the top of the Sheargrub. The Sheargrub immediately whimpered and fell limp, even as Brim scrambled off her and begins wiping nothing tangible off their skin.
The Sheargrub was killed by the impact, as identified early they are utterly harmless to Pikmin. Brim seemed to shudder as they reached their mittens over to the Sheargrub’s stubby mandibles and began to tug, dragging her across the forest floor.
She would not offer the Onion much food, she could only fuel one or two seedlings. Still, it was better than nothing and she was light enough that Brim was able to carry her carcass back to the Onion by themself. It would be a long trek, but they would make it before nightfall.
As Brim dragged the corpse around a puddle, Sentry stared after them, before turning back at the carving. Pikmin had long been known to sing when idle in groups, but this carving was a new form of artwork. And this site seemed to be significant to the colony, given Sentry’s permanent home here guarding it.
Sentry shook their head and lumbered back into their hut, sitting on a pebble as a crude seat. As they settled in, Brim continued to drag the carcass, making sure only their gloves touched the corpse.
The Pikmin of this colony had made several strides, and whether or not it was inspired or invented by Spiky it was clear they had developed a culture of revering a quadruped and shelled Pikmin. Perhaps that is why Brim was free to wear gloves and keep to themself, a neurodivergent Pikmin might be more accepted if an effectively disabled Pikmin was a cultural hero.
Either way, this colony was one of the few Pikmin colonies that were able to pluck seedlings, and because of that, they had a better chance of passing on their lineage than most Pikmin. Perhaps in time, most Pikmin would engage in these behaviors. But for now, this Onion and its Pikmin were an oddity among their species and one that we hope to continue to study in the future.

Kind of A Downer
I think I’ve come to accept that the stuff I make gets attention mostly based on subject rather than the content.
And that’s fine since I cover relatively niche subjects (or niche subjects within popular fandoms), so the folks that like that stuff must be really into it like I am which is cool, but still... I can’t help to be a little... I dunno, disappointed about that I guess? Everything about this situation is my own fault, I’m not blaming anyone for it. It’s just how I’m feeling.
Anyway, sorry to bring y’all down, it’s just something I had on my mind. They’re not finished, but I’m gonna go ahead and post what I’ve done for what I’m calling the “Mahou Smash Project” so far. Right now it feels less like, “What if all the Brawl fighters were magical girls?” and more like “What if all the Brawl fighters wore skirts?”, but I’m working on it.
Tumblr media
This is roughly the first sketch I did to flesh out the concept. It’s a little more difficult to think of stuff for the non-human characters without just giving them bows, but I’ll try to think of more ideas. Kirby is actually based on an outfit he had from “Super Kirby Clash” that’s called “Magical Girl”. I like it as a shoutout, but I’d also like to do something more original.
Tumblr media
No matter how many times I tried to let Mario keep his cap, I felt like it never really went with the rest of the outfit, so I chucked it. I really liked the idea of giving him head wings to call back to his “wing cap” from 64, but it conflicted with Pit being in his group that already has a wing motif, so in later sketches I scrapped it. (His stars also conflict with Kirby, but there are so many star/space themed fighters on the roster, so I don’t think that part is as noticeable). Otherwise I really fell in love with the initial design and it doesn’t really change that much over my several iterations of him.
Tumblr media
Originally Link’s inspo was from “Ojamajo Doremi” since the hats were kinda similar. I tried to incorporate a lot of triangles in the design to represent the triforce, but I’m not sure how I feel about the inner dress yet. I like the shape, but I’m not sure if it suits him. I might wind up giving him shorts later.
Tumblr media
I had a really hard time with Pit since his outfit is already kinda magical. The most I could really come up with was to add a few more embellishments and make some accessories less “bulky”.
Tumblr media
I think Tabuu is actually the second sketch I did when I thought of the idea. At first I was planning on combining this AU with the human!AU to make designing the non-humans easier, but I decided to challenge myself and just keep everyone as they were. It’s a shame because I think this hair suits his design a bit better than the original, but if there ever is a final version of this project, he’s gonna stay bald. His ability is: Morpho Anguish
Tumblr media
Of course I had to try these two at some point. R.O.B. has a royal motif to represent how he ruled over the lesser ROBs, but it’s a little difficult to think of accessories he can realistically wear while keeping most of his original silhouette and get across that he’s a magical girl too.
Unlike other designs where the idea for the costume preceeded the ability, I thought of GW’s ability first and then the costume. His ability allows him to “cook” anything into existence from food to people, but he can only do the “complicated stuff” with his cookbook, which is in Tabuu’s possession.
Tumblr media
Another sketch of these two. This is when I realized that Mario’s wings would overlap with Pit’s. Speaking off, it’s not super obvious, but I eventually settled on “ballerina” as a theme for Pit so I could distance him a bit more from his original outfit. Specifically he’s inspired by “Swan Lake”, thus the first iteration of the feather skirt appears.
Tumblr media
TBH, Wario isn’t super inspired yet. At first it was just a take on Mario’s outfit, but I think I’d like it come a little closer to his WarioWare design since that’s his default in Smash. The crown and cravat is supposed to represent a “W” though, so that’s something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most recent iteration of Pit. I let him keep his bodysuit so he could retain some modesty since I draw the skirts on so short, but I honestly think it clashes with the rest of the design. I’ll have to find a way to incorporate more blue into the design if he’s gonna keep it.
Tumblr media
Mario is mostly the same from previous iterations, so Luigi takes a lot from him, just a “little” different. I like the striped socks as a shout-out to the Mario & Luigi games, but I don’t like how he takes some of Mario’s red when Mario doesn’t take Luigi’s green (I tried giving him the green striped-socks, but they didn’t look good). I might take them out if I iterate on him again. Luigi’s ability is: Electric Moons.
Tumblr media
Another tough one since her design was already kind of magical. I feel like all I did was shorten her dress and add some bows, but sometimes that’s all you really need to do. Her ability is: Blooming Rosales
Tumblr media
Originally she was going to be more “knight” themed and keep her helmet since her power suit reminds me of those medieval suits of armor, but I can’t really draw armor, so I chickened out of it. It’s not super apparent, but her skirt is supposed to be transparent. If I come back for her, I think I’m going to work on making her an actual suit of armor so that there’s more difference between this and her zero suit form. Her ability in this form is: Stellar Cannon.
Tumblr media
I feel like this is less “magical girl” and more ”Judy Jetson”. I like it, but I think it should be frilled up a bit more. I wanted to add some more flower detailing to represent the pikmin, but I think it really clashed with the “old-timey astronaut” thing he’s got going on. It’s still on his helmet, but it really sticks out, doesn’t it? His ability is: Plucking Gardens
Tumblr media
Last two. I might find a way to reintroduce their hoods, but I love the idea of a hat that’s comically small. The pompoms on their hats and shoes are supposed to invoke cherries since they’re often drawn as a pair, but I don’t think it really comes across that way. Popo’s ablity is: Icy Flurry. Nana’s ability is: Freezing Snowfall. Together their ability is: Twin Blizzard

The Engineer’s Heart
Pikmin 3 fanfiction thingy yay! This was cross-posted to Ao3 if you want to read it there instead.
Summary: Alph couldn't keep this bottled up any more. He had to say it, he had to tell him how he felt. Unfortunately these kinds of things don't come easy for Alph.
Parings: Alph/Charlie
Misc. notes: Short n sweet, one shot, fluff
Alph smiled wide as he stood before Captain Charlie – his captain! He was going to go to PNF-404! He was going to be a hero!
He had seen the captain many times on TV. But never in person, not until today.
“You’re Alph? Drake’s grandson?” the captain asked as he approached him.
“Yes sir!”
“I’ve heard of you.” That alone made Alph flush up a little. "I've heard you do good work. I expect good things from you.”
“I won’t disappoint, sir!” Anxiety began to eat away at him a little. He couldn’t disappoint Charlie. He wasn’t sure if he could handle such a thing.
Alph crumpled up the paper and tossed it into an already over-flowing bin. None of it sounds right! Why does none of it sound right?!? He grunted as he leaned back into the chair. They were leaving the planet, and now well on their way to Hocotate in order to return Olimar home.
Alph couldn’t keep it bottled up any more. He had to say something – he HAD to do this. He thought that making it a poem would be easier, but that wasn’t turning out to be the case.
He pulled out another sheet and tried again.
“I think of you so much
You are strong. And kind.
A true leader for us b”
Alph quickly balled the paper up. No! No no no – it still didn’t sound right!
He’d have to try again.
Alph stood there as the Vehemoth Phosbat fell to the ground, letting out one final death cry. He stood there, side by side with Brittany, the both of them stiff as they waited.
Was... was the captain okay?
The beast then twitched, once, twice, and then its mouth was pushed open by Captain Charlie.
He jumped out of the creature, a look of relief spread across his face. “Ah, it’s great to see yo-”
He was cut off with an “oof” when Alph ran over and hugged him tightly. It was rather awkward, given that their helmets got in the way, but it was also still genuine.
“Captain! Thank the stars you’re alive! It took us so long to find you and Brittany was pretty sure you were dead and I was starting to worry that myself especially when your signal came out of that thing, I was for sure it had managed to kill you but you’re alive!!! You’re alive!!!” Alph spoke quickly, and part way through he had started to cry which made it even harder to understand him.
“Woah, woah... hey, hey it’s okay Alph, it’s okay...” He gently began to rub the engineer’s back. “I’m okay now... you don’t need to cry over me.”
“To think one could find love on a planet such as this
Yet here I am
Smitten and awe-struct by your bravery, your kindness, your”
Alph once again crumpled it up. “Dammit. Why can’t the words just... work?”
“What ‘cha up to?” Charlie asked as he walked closer.
Alph looked up from his work. “Oh, just some basic upgrades to the Drake’s computer. Nothing too fancy.”
“What will it do?”
“Eh, just make things run more smoothly on a software level. Useful, but nothing too big.”
Charlie looked at the code work Alph had done. “Really? I thought the Drake’s computer ran just fine.”
“Oh, it did. But it could be better. See, the Drake’s computer ran on code based on the work of Eric Rinnal, who then became famous for his work. That basic “Rinnal” type code has been used in all Koppait space craft sense. And it works well! Really well! But it has some flaws. See, Rinnal’s work was based off of Halbert Trenok’s own work in the field. And Trenok’s work... it was good, and it was super useful and amazing back in his day. But that’s the thing – back in his day! It’s quite outdated now. Rinnal was able to fix most quirks that Trenok’s system had but there’s still a few little wrinkles that could be ironed out. You know, that’s why REKO model ships are infamous for being so awful – they still run on the Trenok system! I mean, it works, I guess, but-” Alph stopped himself midsentence when he saw the bewildered look on Charlie’s face. “O-Oh... sorry if I was being kind of annoying there.”
“You were not being annoying.” Charlie quickly insisted. “You were sharing your interest. I couldn’t quite follow but that’s no reason to feel bad.”
Alph smiled a little. “Oh... thanks.”
“Now how about you tell me exactly how this Tree-nook's stuff was out dated, hm?”
“Trenok.” Alph corrected. “And... I’m not sure if I can word it in a way that would be easy to understand.”
“So? Just keep talking. I’ll keep listening.”
Alph smiled more, and reaching back into his college days he began to explain (and quite frankly, heavily criticize) the Trenok system of space craft code.
“You listen. You listen and you care,
Oh Charlie,
How could I not love you?”
Alph stared at the page. Maybe this? He sighed and leaned his head into his hand. It was a start.
Alph laid awake in his bed, overcome with a strong realization. He couldn’t fall asleep, not after this.
He loved him.
How Alph didn’t realize this sooner, he did not know. He thought about him constantly, he felt a nervous happiness when around him, hell he wrote a damn poem about the guy. Any yet he kept trying to convince himself that he just looked up to him? No.
He loved him.
He loved him so much that it hurt.
What was he supposed to do about it? They were fighting for their life on an alien planet – he couldn’t be distracted by this. And that wasn’t even counting the numerous other issues. Did the captain even like men at all? Would he consider a captain–crew relationship to be too unprofessional? Stars forbid that he’d see a gay relationship taboo. What if the captain simply didn’t like him? What if he was rejected?
Alph curled up into a tight ball. He had to tell him. He had to. He loved him.
But at the very least, it would have to wait. People were depending on them back home, and he couldn’t distract himself or the captain with whatever outcome the confession would have.
But... it would hurt so much until then.
Alph kept staring at the paper in frustration, unable to come up with anything else. He eventually crumpled it up too, and threw it at his door. He laid his head down on his desk. This wasn’t working. None of his ideas were working.
He heard a knock at the door.
“I’m not feeling well.” Alph replied. He didn’t exactly want to deal with any of the others right now.
The door opened anyways. “Alph? What’s wrong? I can get you some medicine.” Charlie’s voice rang through the room.
Alph jumped up a bit. Oh stars, he was the last person he wanted to see. “Oh... I... I’m just burnt out is all.” He looked away from the captain again. “I think I just need to call it an early night.”
“Struggling with your poems?”
“Yeah...”
A pause, then “Well, let me look at this one. Maybe I can help?”
Alph’s eyes widened and he quickly stood up to stop the captain. But it was too late, he had already uncrumpled the page and was reading it. It had only taken him a short moment to finish it, being only three lines long, and then he looked up and locked eyes with Alph.
That was it then, huh? His heart had been exposed to the captain, and was laying out there bleeding. Alph could only lean his ears back and cling to his desk least he fall over.
“Alph...” Charlie’s words were soft, kind. “Alph, you don’t need to be afraid.” He was suddenly much closer now, and held out a hand to the shorter koppait. Alph looked at it, then at Charlie who seemed to be genuinely concerned. Alph elected to just hug him instead.
He wanted to cry. He wanted to cry into the captain’s shoulder and let his worries fade away. But he didn’t. He just stood there as Charlie gently rubbed his back. The captain said some things that Alph couldn’t fully process, but it all seemed to be an effort to calm him down.
After a few moments, he could hear the captain say his name clearly. He looked up at him. “Yes, Charlie?”
“Alph I... a lot has happened over the course of this mission. And I can’t fully understand most of it yet.”
Alph’s ears leaned back. Was he being rejected?
“I don’t know how I feel about you – about this. I’d need time to think it over.”
Alph sighed as he looked down. So no, not a rejection. But not an acceptance either. “I... I understand.”
“Thank you, Alph.” The Captain pulled away a little. “I can promise you only this; I won’t leave you in the dark about whatever my choice is, regardless of what I choose.”
Alph nodded.
Well, at least he had that?
----------
It had been a little under a week now. They had just left Hocotate, and were now heading to koppai. It should realistically only take a few hours.
Alph was in his room again, writing some things down again. He was having a much easier time with it, given it was just about nature and not something as weird as love. Once again, he heard a knock at his door.
“Come on in.” he replied.
Charlie entered the room. “Hey, uh, I had something to ask of you.”
Alph felt his stomach tighten. He couldn’t help it, he felt like he was going to burst from his pent-up emotions. Yet the captain knew about them, and that somehow made it worse. “Y-yeah?”
“It, uh... It’s also related to what... what I found out before.”
Alph’s stomach grew even tighter. “O-Oh...”
“Basically, once we’re back on Koppai, and once the media is done parading us around would... would you still be interested in going out for some dinner with me?”
Alph’s eyes widened a bit as his heart raced. “Yes!” he squeaked out just a little too quickly.
Charlie smiled. “Oh! Well then... I guess we can figure out the details once we’re home. Does that sound alright?”
Alph had already stood up and was walking to Charlie. “Yeah! Yeah that’s good.”
Charlie raised an eyebrow and sighed. “Alright, I know what you want.” he said as he held his arms out. Alph immediately clinged onto him, and Charlie hugged him back. The two stood like that for a good few moments before Alph pulled away a little to look up at Charlie. He was going to say something, but forgot what it was he wanted to say. He and Charlie just stared at each other for a moment, before the taller man gently leaned down and kissed his cheek. Alph squeaked, his face a bright red.
“We’ll be back on Koppai very soon.” Charlie explained. “So go ahead and get ready, okay?”
Alph nodded as Charlie slipped away and left the room. He would get ready, but it’d be hard to focus.
He was really doing it! He was really going to go on a date with Charlie!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: PLEASE READ
Hello, my old friends. I am sorry to have spent so long in silence. I'm not gonna bore you with all the details; basically I need to completely change my entire day to day routine, because I am no longer getting enough commissions to support myself, and I am flat broke with LOTS of piling debts. Things have spiraled completely out of control.
I'm gonna try to keep this as short as I can. I want to write my stories for all of you, but I need to make money. So I'm planning on trying the Patreon thing again. If I can get it to work, that would really fix everything for me.
If I can get enough patrons donating to me, I will be able to resume writing my stories for everyone to read. Those who do not donate will still be able to read my stuff, but those who donate will receive access to bonus behind the scenes content as well as some Patreon-Exclusive stories. I already have some stuff up there, including the exclusive story Faded Memories. I will also maintain a strict posting and writing schedule, which I can figure out based on income.
I wont just be writing one story at a time anymore, though. In order to attempt to gather as many donations as possible, I will focus on multiple tales at a time from many different fandoms. Again, I will make a detailed posting schedule if this works out.
Obviously, Inside Out will remain my standard fandom for writing. The top of my writing to-do list is FINISHING OUT OF PLACE. I also have 4 other tales that I'd like to write, including Always By My Side. Even though I will be writing for many fandoms, Inside Out will remain top priority. It's what I enjoy writing and what I feel comfortable writing.
What other fandoms can you expect? As of right now, I have story ideas for Inside Out, Mst3k, Super Mario, Grim Fandango, Phoenix Wright, South Park, Pikmin, Psychonauts, Animaniacs, Digimon, Oddworld, and a few others. I also have plenty of completely original ideas that I want to start writing. I will make a second post giving brief descriptions for these story ideas.
So how do we get started? First off, I'm gonna get that post with the story descriptions up so you can tell me if there are any in particular that you'd like me to move up the priority list. Two of these stories already have parts written, so my next step will be to post those to my Fanfiction.net account. Finally, I will write the first chapters of the story ideas people liked best so they can get a taste of what they will be like.
At that point, I will recheck my patreon donation amount. If enough people are donating, then a schedule will be set. Out of Place will FINALLY have its ending, patrons will be treated to as many bonuses as I can offer, and writing will become my full time and ONLY job, meaning TONS more stories being posted FAST.
If I fail to gather enough patrons, I will have to rethink things and start over. I will cross that bridge when/if I come to it.
SO HERE IS WHAT I ASK OF YOU.
-Take a look at the story descriptions I provide in my next post, and let me know which ones sound interesting to you. I don’t know if you don’t tell me.
-Check out the two new stories I will be posting to fanfiction to remember my writing style and see if you still enjoy my ideas.
-Once they are finished, read and enjoy the intro chapters of the stories you guys picked out to see if you would want to read more.
-If at ANY time you decide you want to read more of my stuff and are willing to support me, go to my CoffeeFueledAuthor patreon and become a patron. You will receive bonuses, exclusive story access, and even be able to read new story chapters before they are posted to fanfiction.net. You also will be included in the credits of whatever stories you helped to fund.
Let me know what you think of the overall plan. And be sure to mention if you would be willing to become a patron. I'll have those descriptions up soon.
Thank you all for everything you have done for me. Even if this doesn't work out, I want you to know that I appreciated every ounce of support that every one of you gave me along the way.
May luck and happiness find you all.

So a couple of weeks back, @unicornrepublic asked me what my top ten games of 2017 are. When I sat down to write the list it occurred to me that, even though this has been an extremely good year for games... I’ve finished (and liked) approximately jack shit.
It’s weird. I was so hyped for Hey Pikmin!, Persona 5, and Maggie’s Apartment, and I just... never finished any of them. Bloody hell. Also there’s at least one game I haven’t included here despite thoroughly enjoying, because I think we’d all prefer it if that stupid discourse stayed dead and buried.
So! uh, here’s my Personal Top Seven Games of 2017 (That I Have Played Enough Of To Actually Get A Good Feel For), presented in no particular order!
Stories Untold (No Code Games)
A collection of short horror games, ranging from psychological horror text adventures to strange sci-fi puzzles. While the overarching story is nothing to write home about (i.e.; the fourth episode is pretty fuckin’ shit), what’s here is solid and spooky.
I’m also a real sucker for the game design in the first two episodes. It’s always refreshing to see people take cues from seemingly “dead” genres like text adventures!
If you’d like to give it a shot before you buy it, the first episode (The House Abandon) is available for free on the game’s website.
RUMU (Robot House Games)
It’s the not-too-distant future, and you’re a vacuum cleaner. You were designed by eccentric scientist lovebirds Dave and Cecily for two purposes: to feel love, and to clean up their messes when they’re not around. ...Which is pretty often, but hey, at least the house AI Sabrina is there to chat with you.
Rumu is a short game, and a pretty pricey one at that. And while the gameplay isn’t much more creative than your average point-and-click... goddamn. I really loved the story.
It’s never easy seeing good intentions end in disaster.
Night in the Woods (Infinite Fall)
A story-based game with a few light platforming elements. Mae the cat drops out of college for reasons she can’t articulate, and moves back in with her parents in an attempt to get back on her feet. Things slowly begin to go off the rails, however, when she finds a severed arm on her walk home.
I’d been following this project for several years before it came out (roughly around the time of Lost Constellation’s release?), so I was a little nervous to see if the final product would live up to my hype. But, thankfully, it did.
I might not have been raised in small town America or moved out of home for college, but somehow I managed to find something to relate to in nearly every character in the game. Stargazing with Angus and lying on the couch with Bea remain two of my favorite scenes out of anything, ever.
...Honestly, the whole stargazing motif is just so beautifully done. I could ramble about it for ages, but I won’t, because this is getting long enough as-is.
The pacing of the actual ‘plot’ is... pretty weak. Especially if you went into this game expecting heavy thriller or horror elements. But honestly? That doesn’t matter much to me. I just liked hanging out with these characters. And while I haven’t had a chance to check out the Weird Autumn content update, I’d still really recommend this game as-is.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo)
A pretty gorgeous remaster of the original Superstar Saga, with a brand new, side story focusing on one very ordinary Goomba and his pals.
Superstar Saga was one of the very first roleplaying games I ever played as a kid, so this one is totally just a nostalgia pick on my part. The combat system is so goddamn interesting, it’s leaked into a number of my own projects.
Not all of the changes made to the game were for the better (such as the boring equipment screen and the inability to swap Bros. at will), but... goddamn. The animation is gorgeous. The music is gorgeous. And while Bowser’s Minions might be a totally brainless minigame, it is pretty hilarious.
West of Loathing (Asymmetric Games)
You know the saying “I could do this ‘til the cows come home”? Well. The cows have come home to the wild west, from Hell. Someone’s gotta beat them up, and that someone’s you.
Despite the game’s graphics being nothing but black-and-white stick figures, West of Loathing somehow manages to be one of the best open-world sandbox games I have ever played. Seriously. It’s hilarious when it wants to be, serious when it needs to be, provides players with alternate solutions to nearly every problem... And dare I say it, but the NPCs in WoL are really goddamn interesting and I’m attached to each and every one of them.
It’s just a really, really good way to unwind after a long day. Plus, unlike Kingdom of Loathing, I can play this without feeling the burning urge to be 100% efficient all the time.
The Sexy Brutale (Cavalier Games Studios)
All your friends at the Sexy Brutale casino are being violently murdered. That alone would be bad enough, but to make things worse, the day just won’t stop repeating. It’s up to you to do your priestly duties, figure out how to foil each and every murder, and finally end the day.
TSB is far from the perfect game that critics make it out to be, with really basic puzzles and an ending that didn’t really appeal to me. ...But if there’s two things I’m a slut for, it’s murder mysteries and time loops. It’s about goddamn time someone tried mashing the genres together!
Regardless on my opinion of the overall story, there’s so much symbolism and subtle foreshadowing going on, it’s a little hard for me not to be impressed. And the characters themselves are all varied and interesting and I love revisiting them (...even if it is just to watch them nearly die?). Worth checking out if you like jazzy soundtracks, showy casino aesthetics, weird murders, or experimental game mechanics.
Cuphead (Studio MDHR)
WELL CUPHEAD AND HIS PAL MUGMAN AND HIS PAL MUGMAN AND HIS PAL MUGMAN-- ahem
Look, chances are you already know what this game is about, but trust me, the hype is well-deserved.
I adore the set design. I adore the character animation. I adore the soundtrack. ...I do not adore certain RNG moves ([cough] expert cala maria [cough]), or the fact that prolonged play periods are probably a contributing factor in me gettin’ carpel tunnel. But hey! It’s a good game! I’ll live.

Free Money
When you dig up fossils, catch fish and bugs, or find paintings, instead of giving them to the museum sell them to Tom Nook. He will give you from 3000-8000 bells for fossils.
Golden Shovel Benefits
You can get a golden shovel by burying a shovel, and watering it, then dig it up 24 hours later, pick up the shovel. The tip is white because its shiny, its not halfway finished or anything. Then you can dig a whole, put bells in, and create a bell tree based on how much you bury. It turns instantly into a baby bell tree. The bell tree grows, and eventually turns into a full tree. You shake the tree, bells fall down. (obviously, its hanging right there with 3 money bags in a tree) The second time bees fall out, along with the money, so I recommend you plant it near your house, the town hall, or especially the museum or city gates, because you don’t need to open a door there.
Annoying Animals
If one of your animals are really annoying stand A SMALL DISTANCE away from them and hit them with a shovel, eventually they’ll get extremely mad. Keep doing that everyday and they’ll finally leave your town.
Hair Colors
In Nookington’s there is the hair salon place. You can get your hair done in there but in the end, Harriet (the salon owner) asks for the hair color you want. They are a bunch of weird names that you might not have heard of so here is what they are:
Safe: Light BrownLighthearted: Blonde(whitish yellow)Young: BlueLush: GreenRadiant: WhiteMysterious: Dark BrownFiery: RedFlirty: Pink
Easy-Easy Time Travel
Instead of changing your time on the phone, you can quit playing your game and go to DS settings. This way your town won’t grow any weeds and you wont mess anything up. Easy as pie
Shoot Balloons
Sometimes at the top of the screen is a balloon. Use your slingshot to shoot itdown for items.
Lower Your Mortgage
Add a new resident to your town and after the new resident is finished working for Tom Nook. Tom Nook will lower your mortgage.
Getting The Golden Slingshot
Pop a yellow and violet stripe balloon that looks like a hot air balloon with a slingshot try it!
Tan Or Pale?
Are you a person who likes to be super tan? Or really pale? Well, you can be anyone of those on Animal Crossing Wild World DS. Just in the Summer and Spring, go outside all the time, and do that for a few weeks, and when you go to play again, you will be tanner. But, if you wanna be paler, then go outside in the winter and fall seasons. Hope this helps!
Able Sisters
Have you ever noticed when you go into the clothes store called Able Sisters, what Sable is sewing? Well, the pattern that she is creating, will end up in the store the next day! So, if the pattern is REALLY cool, and you say to yourself, “I’ve got to have this” you can! Just not then and there. But the next day, it will be in the store!
2 Or More Houses
Go on animal crossing and when you see that some animal is moving away, stay in the animals house for 2 days and make sure that your DS is charged. When that day happens (when its been 2 days)it will be your house but be careful it doesn’t always happen. Your DS has to be closed. Yay now you have more houses and room and you can keep doing this every time.
Flower Power Accessories!!!
If you want to add a little jazz to your style, then pick up a flower (press B) and drag it to your character. Different flowers do different things:
ROSES-in your mouth
TULIPS/PANSIES/COSMOS-in your hair
DANDELIONS-in your hand
Make sure to pick the right color to match your outfit!

New Stuff
If you want more new, and cool stuff, keep talkingto your animal friends and they’ll give yousomething if they’re a nice type of person! Makesure you keep talking to them and they’ll give youstuff to make you go away!
Hint: Stopping Dangerous Players
Ever hear of Dangerous Players? These are people who have an action replay and use codes to take items, destroy your town, and plant building seeds to prevent you from going somewhere or to destroy something else. To counter these, find out who these players are, get an AR and get the building seed code, and place the seed in front of the Town Gate entrance. When it has finished growing, the Dangerous Player will not be able to leave their town, stopping the havoc that they caused. STOP THE MADNESS!!! Also to stop a building seed from growing, get a shovel and if you find any small trees that you see after planting a seed, shovel it up. (unless you planted it!)
Make A Wish!
First, go around in your town until you find a dandelion puff. Pick it up and put it in your pocket. Then, go in your pockets and drag the dandelion puff to your character. It will appear in your hand. Then exit your pockets and turn your character so that it is facing you. Then press A and your character will blow the dandelion puff.
Feed The Walrus!
Every once in a while, the hobo walrus will come to your town and ask you to feed it. Instead of giving it fruit, you can give it fish. If you give him fish from the ocean, he will give you a REALLY cool pattern, like there’s one that is a fake star-thing that you dig up fossils and stuff from. You can put on the ground and fool your friends! It’s really cool!!!!
The Snowmen
During winter you will find snowballs. Roll two of them around in the snow. The first one roll it until you cant roll it anymore and the second one roll it until you think it is the size of a snowman head. Make sure the bigger one is on snow. Roll the second one into the first one and they will be on top of each other. And if it is perfect he will send you a letter with a snowman theme present.
Kaitlyn And Katie
If you have a person that has Animal Crossings too that you play with often you might get Kaitlyn or Katie in your town. Kaitlyn will be a big cat walking around in an apron. Katie is a small cat that will be standing in one spot and crying if you have Kaitlyn open your gate if you have Katie bring her into the town where her mom is (Kaitlyn is her mom). First you have to make sure each other knows first. The person who brings Katie to her mom will get a present the next day in their mail from Katie.Me and my sis did this all the time.
A Tree Full Of 30,000 Bells
First dig a hole. Bury 99,000 bells. Water everyday. Then eventually u will get 3 bags of 30,000bells. They will be hanging from the tree. Becareful. The next days a bee hive will be there. Soits a good idea to plant the money near your house. You need 99,000 bells for this to work.
Efficient Town
To make your town look more efficient you should go to Able sisters and make roadway pieces and then set them down on the ground.
Fruit Trade
If you mail a fruit to one of your neighbors, it is possible they will sent you a different fruit back. Should try with different animals.
Never Ever Sell Foreign Fruit!
Never sell fruit your town doesn’t have, insteadplant it. When that tree gives fruit, then you canplant that fruit. Wait until you have at leastfive of that kind of fruit tree before you sellit. Reasons to do this: you can sell it for 500bells each (five trees thats fifteen of that typeof fruit), also when u go to your friends townstrade your fruit for theirs (if they have a lot offruit like you it will be an equal trade). Theresa lot of bells in fruit thats not your native!
Wear Flowers
To wear flowers you first must pick one up. Onceit is in your pocket put it over your character initems, and it will either be: in your hair, inyour mouth,or you will be holding it. Depending onwhat type of flower it is.
Acorn Festival
The Acorn festival is November 6-13.
Waiting
If you wait for about five days without playing you’ll have a coconut on the beach, and if you wait about ten days without playing you’ll have a message in a bottle and a coconut on the beach.
Coconuts
If you find a coconut on the beach go over to a tree by the beach cut it down digit up and bury the coconut. Then in a few days it will grow. Repeat this and get acoconut orchard, then each time you get all the coconuts go and sell them for $500each.
Pitfall Seed
Pitfall Seeds are little white circles with red exclamation points on them. They aren’t worth anything to Nook but they are funny. You can dig one up or check the lost and found. If you bury one then walk over it you’ll fall and have to press you character or “A” to get out. You can prank the animals in your town by burying them outside your door and they fall in them. It made me laugh. Have fun with them.
Bed Switchamaroo
To switch your bed first, go to Tom Nook’s and buy a bed (if he doesn’t have a bed check the catalogor you already have one skip this). Then go to the room where you save. Go to the foot (bottom) of the bed and press “A”. It will ask you if you want to switch your bed, say “yes”, then pick the bed you want to switch it with. You will have your old bed in your pockets sell it to Tom Nook or keep it.The bed you get is basic you can get all four colors of the basic bed (red, blue, green, yellow I think!) by making new people.
Backround Change
To change the background, open up your fashion designs page. Pick one and drag it into the bottom left hand conner. It will disappear and you background will change for ordering items and the main page.
Close Open Holes With Feet
If there is an open hole in the ground in stead of getting out your shovel you can just go up to the hole and press B and your Person will kick dirt in the hole and it will close. (Note: you can do this with an item in your hand.)
Money Tree
First, buy 2 shovels. Plant 1 shovel. Wait 24 hours and dig up the golden shovel. Then, put 100 bells in your pockets and plant a tree. You now have a money tree.
Time Travel Without Moving Residents
Instead of going to what ever time you want to go to right away, go 2 months at a time and check on your residents to make sure that they aren’t moving.
Make Your Character Go To Sleep Without Dr. Shrunk
Have someone come over to your town and close your DS. Look on the other persons screen and you will be sleeping. This can be done Vice-Versa.
Senor K.K. Song Goes Faster
If you request Senor K.K. the credits will go by faster.
Rover
When its raining on a Thursday go to the coffeeshop. You will see Rover sitting down. Talk to himfrom behind. If he’s not there, make sure its raining.
Sick Animals
To get your animal to be healthy again, feed it medicine or to DS to DS with a friend.
Fossils
Sending in fossils takes forever and wastes your time, but you can get BIG BELLS if you have enough in the museum. First, after you check your mail, search for fossils. If you found some, give them to Blathers at the museum. Soon enough (if you do this everyday) you will have so many fossils, you’ll get doubles back. SELL THOSE DOUBLES! You can get around 1000-8000 bells! I went from 23,000 bells to 55,000 bells in just 5 days.
The Zebra Shirt
Most likely, if you donate 10,000 bells to Gracie after bothering her 3 or 4 times, you will get the zebra shirt. But beware! You might get an ugly ponytail. Don’t worry! Just click remove headgear when you are at your items pocket and you’ll get your regular hairstyle back.
Flea Market
The flea market is on September 1st. There, you can go into other people’s houses and buy stuff. Other people can also buy stuff in your house. It’s awesome!!!!
Snowballs In Water
If it’s winter, and you see a snowball close to the ocean or the river, make you person push the snowball into the water. It will just melt. But I thought it was pretty funny.
When Dr. Srunk Appears
Dr. Shrunk appears Jan. 16, 2007, 9:40
New Fruit
If you want new fruit do this. Mail a neighbor a fruit that you have on every tree. They will send you a different fruit. Plant the fruit with a shovel. Let the tree grow(It will take like 3 days). Send the same fruit to another neighbor and they will send you another fruit. Keep on planting the same fruit and you will have a town full with fruit. You will find counuts on the beaches.Sometimes if you send some fruit sometimes you will get the same fruit over again.Sell the fruit that is not native to your town, each fruit is 500 bells. So if you sell a whole pocet full of none native fruit you will get 7,500 bells. That is a way to get lots of money.
Trapping
Get a shovel and go outside. If you find a person walking around dig holes around them. They will not be able to go past the holes. To make the holes disappear go inside or exit the game.
Flying Presents
Presents will fly over your town when the time ends in a “4”.
Tripping
To trip, go to someone else’s town, like one of your friends. Then, have someone else come into that same town, so that there are two visters including you. Next, start running like crazy all over the place. Eventually, someone will fall. I fell once into the sand and when I got up my head print was in the sand!!!! Also, the person whose town you are vistiting will not trip. Lyle will also give 100 bells in the mail when you trip.
K.K Sliders Songs
At The Roost Cafe (basement of your museum) K.K. Slider will play music on Saturday nights from 8:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight. Talk to him and he’ll play a song for you. You can also request a song. These are all of his songs:

Get Alot Of Money From Flea Markets
If a neighbor wants to buy a fish or bug from your house during a flea market, you can sell it to them for double what it’s worth. Arowana are worth 10,000 bells each, but I sold one to my neighbor during a flea market for 20,000 bells!!!
Keep Acorn Credit
NEVER give Cornimer a rotton acorn during the Acorn Festival. You will lose all acorns he has counted so far.
Free Stuff
IF a animal in your town asks you to deliver something to another player in the town well don’t. If you want to keep the item which normally is a clothing item keep the gift over night and the next morning you should be able to open it without them being mad at you. Or open the gift when you get it and have them mad at you its your call.
Firecracker Stock Up
When its the fireworks show go to tortimer and talk to him he will give you a roman candle and talk to him again to get a sparkler then put the roman candle and sparkler down on the ground on a letter or in your drawers then talk to him again and get a roman candle and sparkler. You can do it up to 10 times but you can’t have them in your pockets to obtain more. If you have more then one player do it with them to. If you have four players you can get 40 roman candles and sparklers combined.
Time Travel
Most people know what time travel is but for thoughs of you who don’t or are to unpatient to wait for a holiday don’t wait. Before you wake your player up theres a telephone well click on it and select reset clock. Simply reset the clock to the day you want to. But do not reset the clock if your house or store is getting remodeled it could effect it not that i did that (oops.) Also some town animals may have moved out and an enourmous amount of weeds will appear if you go back to far and cockroaches will be in your house but there easy to kill run over them and pick the weeds.I recommend to do it with a player you normally don’t play with if you have multiple players and if you get rare items mail it to them or leave it in your house for them to pick up. Well hope you enjoy the year 2007 in ACWW i know i did.
More Money
If you get fruit from another player or find a coconut on the beach, DO NOT SELL IT! Instead, find a place for a new tree and dig a hole with your shovel. In a few days you will have a tree with the fruit on it (so that’s like multiplying it by 3) but again, don’t sell any. Just plant them again and repeat until you have a forest of the fruit (figuratively speaking) and then sell them all and you will get much more.
Dr. Shrunk
When Dr. shrunk comes tell him you need help. You have to answer some questions and the tap hi forehead. He will give you an imotion icon, which you find in the “speech bubble” icon in your toolbar.
Easy Money
Sell all clocks, and unwanted items. If you sell a mix of fish, bugs, furniture, and shells you can get around 7,000 bells. Also look in the recycling bin and Booker’s lost and found for free items (the recycling bin is most likely other villagers furniture, so if you want them, be patcient and you may get it, I got a giant stereo that was once someone elses!)
Changing Your Hairstyle
You need to have the Tom Nook’s store called Nookington’s. Enter the store and go straight ahead to a doorway. That doorway leads the hair dresser. Talk to the poodle. Note: You need 3,000 bells to do this. After that answer her questions and then she will do your hair. Warning: She may give you a bad hairstyle.
Flea Market
When it’s time for the flea market when you are at home and someone comes in and it wants your stuff (they will want everything and I mean EVERYTHING!) take your favorite items, put them in your wardrobe or dresser and put the wardrobe or dresser in your pocket. When they want something crappy, offer it to them for 2,000 or 1,000 Bells and if they have yhe money, they will buy it. Also, if you want the animal to go away, walk to the door and they will leave.
Trick Resetti
If Resetti asks you to type in an apology, once you are in the typing screen, click off the power and start over. Resetti won’t make you type the next time! WOO HOO!
The Red Flower
If you time travel too much a giant red flower will appear in the center of your town. This red flower makes weeds and will fill your entire town with weeds. The only way you can get rid of it is to pick every single weed in your town.
K.K. Slider
K.K. Slider comes saturday at 7:30 in the coffe shop in the mueseum. To get one of the theme songs from animal crossing game cube, request Forest Life and you will have it.
Get Free Bells In The Mail
On Saturdays there will be a man named Lyle. If you talk to to him you can buy damage insurance. So when you get stung by a bee, Lyle will give you 100 bells in the mail.
How To Get A Golden Slingshot
When you see a present in the air attatched to aballoon, get right under it, and shot it with your slingshot (bought at Tom Nook’s). Do that every time you see that, shot it (ballons will randomly appear in the air any time, any season, and any weather). When you shot the presents in the air 15 different times (15 presents, more than one day to do so) you will be sent a GOLDEN SLINGSHOT!!!!!!!!
Golden Fishing Pole
To get the golden fishing pole you must first catch all the fish. Fish can all be caught in different seasons. To find out all the fish’s seasons get the animalcrossing cheat code book.
Golden Shovel
To get a Golden Shovel, buy 2 shovels, then bury one. Wait 24 hours, then go back to where you buried the shovel. Dig it up, and you get a golden shovel.

In order to have red cheeks, when you are creating your character, go to the first question that Kapp’n asks you. Choose the second answer to have the red cheeks.
How To Save Without Going To Bed
Instead of going to bed to save, you can press start. Then click save and end. The next time you come, you will wake up in your bed.
Waving Hi
When you see one of the animals in your town outside, don’t go up to them. When you are sort of far away, tap them and you will wave and they will wave back.

Tree Shakin’
Go around shaking every non-fruit bearing tree that you see. Some random trees will yield money bags (100 gold) or items. The first item that I recieved from a tree was a cabin clock.
Meet Pete The Mailman
Around 9:00 am you can shoot Pete down with a slingshot and talk to him.
How To Obtain The Dirty Shirt/Uniform
Sometimes Gracie will attach a dirty shirt along with her evaluation. You can get the uniform when you get a part-time with Tom Nook.

The scallop is used to get the golden axe from Pascal. Pascal walks around by the beach at a random time, once a week. First, you need to buy a red turnip from Joan. Next, give it to Wendel the next time he comes to town. Wendel gives you the Turban or Country Guitar. If you get the Turban, take it to Sahara when she comes to town. Sahara should give you either the Massage Chair or Red Vase. If you get the Massage Chair, let Tortimer have it the next holiday and he should give you the scallop. Then just wait for Pascal to sho wup and give him the scallop. But if you got the Country Guitar, give it to K.K. Slider to get K.K.’s PicAnd if you got the Red Vase, give it to Crazy Redd in exchange for the Safe. Give the safe to Tom Nook for the Tom Nook Pic.

Quick Game Reviews: What I played 2018
Tumblr media
I’m gonna go ahead and do this for the whole year, which includes games that WEREN’T released this year, but I played this year. I also made this throughout the year, so most the opinions were right after I played it and if it’s been updated further might not include that in my blurb.
I needed to type and felt like I needed to make something. This might motivate me I suppose. Let’s get started
Tumblr media
DOOM 2016 [PC]
I grew up on Pokemon, Mario, and Doom II. I couldn’t play it until I got my new computer this year so yeah way too late. This is a pretty solid game, though thanks to all of the bonuses and honestly nearly intrusive leveling up system kinda stepped in the way of the raw combat. It’s obviously my choice, but I felt encouraged to spend a lot of time exploring areas I’d already cleared rather than run and gun.
That being said, I still loved it. The secrets were, for the most part, really clever and fun anyway and the combat is delicious. I would strongly recommend this
Tumblr media
A Hat in Time + Seal the Deal DLC [PC]
I love this game. A lot. It’s really cute and looks really good, it’s got a ton of charm, and it’s honestly a very good time overall. I 100% the base game last year when it first came out, and I would highly recommend to fans of 3D platformers, and still worth a try if you’re on the fence on them. The mod support is also great that it’s in there and I want to try that a lot. however the DLC...
So the new level is pretty short and while it’s fun, it’s not as good as the other levels. The characters (I think) are really cute and the charm is all there and that great, but it has all of 3 levels, and 2 of them are exploring the exact same places (the boat) and the 3rd is a nice twist on that, but other than that it’s pretty barren. The time rifts were fun as well, but alone... eh. The Death Wish portion, that is the super hard challenge mode...
... is not good. Obviously my opinion, and I might be missing the point, but after having been frustrated over and over and over again, the game itself is just not tight or clean enough to warrant it. My backing for this is that a large portion of the challenges rely on originally unintended level geometry or quirky mechanics in order to complete, and having challenges that require you to be in the know about these honestly inconsistent “quirks” is just not good. Specific examples: the ice hat giving you a small boost to avoid jumping in challenges is alright but fluctuates in how much height it gives you a lot, the challenges around the train chase still have the wonky hitboxes that do not line up with what’s still on screen, and the parade challenge has an invisible hitbox on the main platform that can kill runs. In short If you have found you love the main game and are a bit of a masochist, go for the DLC.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Ultra Sun [3DS]
This is more or less just a revisit of the same generation with some very minor changes. The story changes take the focus away from Lillie and Lusamine (and as a result how interesting the former and evil the latter are) and places it on Necrozma and Ultra Beasts. I really like what they did with Necrozma, but overall it feels like a lot less. And while the Rainbow Rocket post game was nice and fun nostalgia, it’s still missing a solid post game like B2W2 or Gen II had.
Ultra Wormholes are cool though, and all the good mechanics from SM are still there, so honestly I would recommend this if you haven’t played gen 7 and like Pokémon.
Tumblr media
Hey! Pikmin [3DS]
It’s awful. I can’t think of a reason to pick this up.
I can rant about this for years, but it basically got the Zip Lash/ Sticker Star treatment: it took a franchise known for something and made it something else that was bad. It’s an incredibly slow puzzle “platformer” where you have to collect a bunch of treasure using pikmin you find in the level, it’s laggy even on a n3DS, and even though the point of the game is to collect enough treasure to leave, if you do that they’re all like “by the way, you still have to beat the final boss” so the entire auto-collecting side game you put your pikmin into is entirely pointless. This is honestly the worst 3DS game I played this year.
Tumblr media
Hollow Knight [PC]
So I’m normally not that great with the games-that-are-pretty-dang-hard, and this was no exception. That said however, I did get pretty far (probably) before I got to a boss fight I just couldn’t beat (It was an onslaught of rolling knights in the raining city or something, it’s been a while). And after that I tried finding more power-ups and stuff to help, but I had to set it down after getting bottlenecked there. That being said, I can very easily see why people like this hardcore metroid-vania platformer, and would still recommend it if you’re into the Dark Souls style of high difficulty and mechanical mastery in other genres.
Tumblr media
Axiom Verge [PC]
This is another Metroid-style game. I really liked this one as well, especially how its power-ups weren’t the traditional “You jump higher now” traversal power-ups. It really has a nice atmosphere and theme that still feels alien and metroidy while also feeling like the glitchy world by giving you weapons and movement abilities that let you glitch and change the environment around you. I really liked it! My only real complaint is the bosses get really challenging through a result of eventually figuring out what weapon and strategy is was designed for, and there are some areas that I was completely lost trying to find where I was going next, but all in all it’s pretty solid.
Tumblr media
Octodad: Dadliest Catch [PC]
I normally really hate games where the focus is “lol, you can barely control your character! hahaha.” I actually really liked this one; it isn’t hard to get the hang of it and it’s really funny and still enjoyable at the same time. I rarely actually felt annoyed at the controls. I had a ton of fun with it, even if it was a little short.
Tumblr media
Kirby Star Allies [Switch]
My complaints are very much the same as everyone else’s here; it’s a pretty okay Kirby game, but it lacks real challenge and is pretty quick. the real “star” of the show is playing the game with different characters, but since you can’t do that until after you play through as Kirby, by that point it’s either grown on you or hasn’t. The best part is the unique levels they made for the DLC characters, Gooey, Marx, Dreamland buddies, etc. Those are a ton of fun. If you like Kirby games, this one’s no Super Star but you’ll likely love all the attention to the free DLC characters and it’s not bad by any stretch.
Tumblr media
HOB [PC]
It’s a 3D, top-down Zelda style game with an emphasis on some platforming elements. The world is wonderful, definitely the Aesthetic with clockwork worlds that Spiral Knights wishes it could’ve had. I actually had a ton of fun with it. The secrets and exploration were great, combat is ehhhhhh but that’s not really the focus. It’s a good time, If you like Zelda but with some puzzle platforming and great atmosphere, check this one out!
Tumblr media
Poi [PC]
This is a Unity 3D platformer that attempted to brush off the Unity, and does an alright job with being mechanically tighter than most, but still has the Unity feel. Controls are a bit loose, could’ve used a lot of polish, but honestly this scratched the 3D platformer collect-a-thon itch for a bit and I actually 100% it. You have to love 3D platformers like Sunshine or Banjo Tooie to be able to like this, but if you do it’s a pretty fun romp.
Tumblr media
Princess Remedy In a Heap of Trouble [PC]
This is a fun, short bullet-hellish game with an old-school Atari aesthetic. It’s pretty fun, but honestly I like the mechanics in the free game better (though this has more content). It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s quirky (and kinda short), try out the free game and if you like that one give this a try! The main difference is the “date” mechanic, where people you heal can join you to give you a different special power from healing, to various kinda of bombs, time freezing, homing bullets, etc. Once you find one though, it’s hard to convince yourself to try something else.
Tumblr media
Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion [Switch]
This is Splatoon 2′s expanded hard/challenge mode. I’m a big fan; a few of the challenges are eh, but overall the aesthetic and branching map structure are super fun. The expanding on the lore and bonuses are also great; even though earlier I don’t normally go for the extremely hard, I found myself 100%’ing this. There’s a really tough challenge at the very end of all that, and I would say If you liked Splatoon 2, pick this up. It’s the expansion of Single Player that it deserves, though prepare for a few frustrating challenges.
... But now you have to pay for a terrible service to play it online so keep that in mind...
Tumblr media
Celeste [Switch]
This is a fucking great game and you should buy it. It’s a challenging (very hard) platformer in the line of super meat boy and maybe even I Wanna Be The Guy, but this does it extremely right. restarting is very quick, the controls are incredibly tight, and the levels are genuinely clever and fun.
The story is also really solid, and I can’t recommend the whole package as a solid game.
Tumblr media
Grow Up [PC]
This is the sequel to Grow Home, a game I’ve quick-reviewed a long time back. I liked the whole explore a whole planet and find some neat stuff, however the challenges are reliant on some weird procedural animations which don’t necessarily cooperate. It kinda overstays it’s welcome as a result, though the open nature of it is really fun. I have a hard time recommending this one, but it’s still a pretty solid romp even if it fights you a bit.
Tumblr media
Sonic Mania Plus [Switch]
Having 100% the base game which I highly recommend, I was expecting a lot more things to do with this. Encore mode is fun; I really like how you can change up your characters and have to adjust on the fly. The new special stages are tough but fun, but the pinball minigame is.. not good. Gets old pretty quick. additionally it doesn’t add much after encore mode. Might and Ray have abilities that meaningfully add some neat gameplay stuff, but after how great the base game was, I was expecting a little bit more. That being said, the DLC is a nice bonus for the base game and you can’t really go wrong with it.
Tumblr media
Lovely Planet [PC]
So I made a point to only play this game when I was drunk. The first few times I happened to be when I played it, so I stuck with it. This is a quick-restarting FPS with a focus on perfect shots and maneuvering to destroy all the target and get to the end as soon as possible. It’s hard as balls but really silly, so if you’re into perfectionist gameplay it’s worth a go. Probably not drunk tho.
Tumblr media
Ever Oasis [3DS]
IIRC, this came out at a time where there was a lull in Nintendo games, or at least 3DS games so this one was very much skimmed over. It’s a mix between a town management sim and Zelda-style dungeon crawling and resource gathering. On paper, and even somewhat in game, this is a cool idea; you get townsfolk who can go with you on missions, each with their own abilities, and what you get outside of the town is used to help expand you town, which will buff you/your townspeople's abilities to go further in dungeons.
In practice however... they don’t really mesh. The limitation of 1 item per party member and items being locked to specific people you need to find, going to dungeons is a chore as you need to find out which characters you need to actually play (often not your best). Meanwhile, time passes so quickly and your town’s shopkeepers run out of resources so quickly, it’s a full time job to keep up the town and then you run out. They mitigate this near the end game by have the ability to make parties out of townspeople who can’t own shops, which are very rare. The ending is good up until the last moment where they do a thing that doesn’t make sense to get some points for emotion but... It just doesn’t work to me.
All in all, it has a demo to show how a dungeon works, and if you like management AND what that dungeon has to offer, go for it. Otherwise, the setting and character design are great but not enough to really hold interest
Tumblr media
Q.U.B.E. 2 [PC]
The First game was Portal-esque in that you navigated the first-person Cube puzzle maze without any dialogue while manipulating the chambers with a variety of cube-spawning and extending abilities. You had to piece out and interpret the story yourself. This is the opposite; there’s a lot of dialogue, story set-pieces, and it’s bizarrely paced. You’ll get through most the game in like an hour, but then the last 2-3 chapters are the bulk of the game. Those are pretty fun, but the game is still incredibly short and I liked the tone of the first better. It’s short, it’s not bad, but it doesn’t really stand out.
Tumblr media
NES Classic
So I dunno if I love or hate this thing. It’s great because it’s an official NES with controller and emulator and gives me the opportunity to play a buncha games I hadn’t before, but the controller cable is too small, the damn thing has trouble getting enough power (EDIT: This was actually my aparement’s faulty wiring, though if you aren’t supplying it with enough power the sound won’t work either), and this things existence is probably part of the reason we’ve not seen a proper virtual console support on Switch. You can hack it to be able to upload other ROMs to it, which is neat (I haven’t done that), but ultimately it’s worth looking at the games and asking yourself: Do I really want to play most of these? Do I really want to buy this when I’ve already bought most of them?
Tumblr media
SNES Classic
This is the same as above but more expensive with less games... But to me is a better value. It has a better selection of games (in my opinion), though they could’ve included some better ones. It still has the power issues (which are overcomable easily) but comes with 2 controllers with longer cables. Also StarFox 2 is a very nice game. I’d recommend this more than the NES Classic, but again, weigh what’s in it vs what you actually want to play if you can’t already
Tumblr media
WarioWare Gold [3DS]
This is a compilation game done right. It has the WarioWare charm and the voice acting adds even more to it. The microgame selection and adaptations are wonderful, and honestly I don’t have any complaints. It has changed everything to fit in one of 3 (+2 smaller ones) categories: Mash, Twist, and Touch (+ blow and short). These are normally separate by category, but near the end they mix and match and even do some fun mix-up with it in the very last rounds and bonus game modes.  Whether your first WarioWare or a veteran, this is in my opinion the best in the series, and I would suggest you give it a go.
Tumblr media
Monster Hunter World [PC]
So this one is hard. I really wanted to like it, and after playing Dauntless I thought I would. I even promised friends I would play it with them frequently and keep up but... between friends being able to play when I couldn’t and the game’s wonky controls and online issues, I was falling behind and getting frustrated. That’s kinda side stuff; if I really liked it I could’ve caught up. The truth is, I liked Dauntless better because while it was also very buggy, the combat was just a lot more straightforward and responsive. Monster Hunter seemed like Dauntless with a bunch of annoyances added onto it. There are tons of collectibles and recipes, weapon sharpness is entirely pointless when the monsters run anyway to give you breaks, the weapons I played seemed sluggish to attack with, and monster attacks were unclear a lot of the time. Everything just felt like a pain in the ass or waste of time to deal with and put a lot of focus on inventory management or grinding, and to me the core game you would do that for just wasn’t there.
Like I enjoyed the free roaming and exploration, but the fighting is just not for me and that’s the whole point of the free roaming and all that. I feel bad about not liking this after enjoying Dauntless, but I just am not into Monster Hunter and will be skipping the series from now on.
Tumblr media
Katamari Forever [PS3]
I got this one thinking it was a compilation game of all the Katamari games!
It was not. It’s actually the hardest Katamari game... Which kinda surprised me about how much of a dick they are when you start out since their controls are incredibly weird and unintuitive (you get used to them) and anything short of perfection will get the Kings to any where from passive aggressively imply you did poorly or just straight out call you awful and not to bother.
Here’s the part where randomly in the giant text post I just completely break whatever I was talking about because I’m 95% no one actually reads this so for shits and giggles the first person to reply to my tweet where I posted a link to the blogpost stating that they found this paragraph will get a free me replying back to that tweet saying “nice” back. An enticing gift amirite? Anyway continuing on.
That being said, it’s pretty fun after all that; there are one or two levels designed to be super annoying but the ones where you play the core game of quickly building your Katamari are for the most part very solid. This is for existing fans of the series, but i had a pretty good time with it after I got past the barrier to entry.
Tumblr media
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero: Ultimate Edition [PC]
I’ve talked about liking Shantae before on this blog; I mentioned that I liked Pirate’s Curse but the fact that side missions and collectibles were actually required for game completion. This Shantae looks great and all, but they completely tossed out the open-like nature and makes it a series of linear levels that you have to revisit at least 2-3 times to find the stuff that should’ve been off somewhere in a different series of areas and optional that’s really just slightly out of reach due to a power up you arbitrarily find after the level you needed to use it in ends. Dungeons are completely gone; the game literally is just “go right” and remember all the little things you couldn’t get to for when you have to backtrack over and over again.
That’s just the base game, and even with all that said it’s not a bad game, it just doesn’t really feel like a Shantae game anything other than aesthetically. I spent a few hours trying to 100% the base game, but after getting 99% and discovering I had to backtrack yet again to a snake merchant to trade for dances just to use them once and trade back, I just had 0 interest in getting the final percent. There are also a variety of different takes on the same campaign where you play as Shantae in different costumes with different abilities, Risky, or even Bolo + Skye + Rotty, and again those look fun but... I don’t really want to play the same game another 10 times.
Tumblr media
Dragalia Lost [Android]
This is Nintendo’s first jump into mobile with a new IP, and while it’s definitely banking hard on more traditional gacha mechanics (you can get 5 star items instead of Hero characters only), it’s definitely not bad. It’s pretty generous with stamina and resources, at least when you start, and my only major complaint is how you seem to hit a wall in terms of how long it takes to really progress about a week or so of playing every day in. And it’s quite a wall; there’s quite a lot of grinding needed once you get to chapter 6 (the current final chapter that really feels like just the end of a prologue (Edit, they recently added chapter 7)), so you really need to like it. The levels are kinda simple as well, though there’s a maze-like area in the story that’s a bit more clever so it’s a start at least. All and all, it’s worth a try, but if you don’t like the top-down brawler after the first world, it’s not worth forcing through gacha mechanics for; especially since after you complete normal story mode, all you’re going to be doing is grinding to get through hard and the summoning currency gets scarce fast. For reference, getting enough to be able to challenge the High Dragon quests and not immediately die in them takes 2 months of grinding specifically for that purpose if you use your stamina optimally, which you won’t because events are more fun anyway
Tumblr media
Overcooked 2 [Switch Download]
So this is actually really fun with a friend or 3; and that’s where it really shines. Sure, you can do it single player but it just doesn’t feel as fun. This is a sort of quick time-management game where you have to frantically run around cooking various recipes before they run out of time, to get a star rating at the end. There’s some bad levels, but the majority are really fun and it feels very fair even in single layer; I always think at the end regardless of the rank that I could’ve managed my dudes to do even better. The only real complaint is the loading times seem... unnecessarily long. Especially for restarting a level. It’s nothing too bad though.
Luckily this has online multiplayer, so I highly recommend picking this up on a platform that your friends have it on, ie Steam. I got it on Switch and in hindsight since I strongly dislike Nintendo’s online service I really wish I had gotten like a 2-pack on Steam. That’s not a complaint with the game though; I really liked it!
Tumblr media
Super Mario Party [Switch]
Probably the best Mario Party in a very, VERY long time. This is going to be a longer review. I played this first with Keewy and his roommates and we had a great time in every single game mode (except online).
The Mario Party mode is really good; they’ve shrunk the map and reduced how much stars cost to 10 coins, but 10-15 turn games can still take an hour to an hour and a half. This makes it a much simpler, easier to get mode, but the real star here is them bringing back the Ally & character dice mechanic from Mario Party Star Rush (had it’s good moments, but was on 3DS so that’s it for that). Each character can roll a normal 1-6 dice, but they also each have a unique die that has different numbers on it. These are for the most part balanced; character with higher numbers on their dice also have downsides instead of a 1. 0′s, losing coins, and in some cases gaining coins (because you still don’t move), and it adds a level of strategy to it where otherwise it would be just “roll and hop for the best. That’s what it is still, but sometimes you can choose. You can also pick up other characters who will help you in minigames, give you the option to roll their die, and add 1-2 spaces to your roll. It’s super fun.
The River Rafting mode is 4-player co-op, and it’s pretty fun as well your first run through. Not single player though; this very much shines with 4 people. However, because there are only like 8? 4-player co-op minigames, you see every game on your first run so it doesn’t really hold up after your first couple runs.
The dance mode is great; it’s like Rhythm heaven but Mario Party themed. Again, these minigames are really fun, but once you play through all 3 difficulties, which takes about 10 minutes, there aren’t any you haven’t played.
2v2 is ripped straight out of Star Rush, which is a great thing. Again, don’t play this with a cpu on your team at least. As far as I can tell, even in Mario Party mode, CPU’s make the same brain-dead decisions on the boards regardless of their difficulty level. Anyway, this has the same 4 boards but opened up vastly; You now roll, combine it with your partner, then add any allies you may have picked up along the way’s 1-2 rolls and other bonuses. The point is to land on the starspace and buy it, and it’s just a good time to see the strategy involved with either going for the stars, allies, or secondary goals. By far the best alternative Mario Party gameplay style in a while (way better than Island Tour’s linear maps and 9-10′s Car mode), but again there’s only the 4 maps.
So I guess my only true complaint is that while there are a lot of minigames, they’re split so much over the different modes they don’t feel like a lot and you see repeats frequently. Additionally it would be nice to turn on/off the bonus stars at the end and other options involving maybe skipping some of the cutscenes (star moving, places changed, etc.). All in all, the best and most interesting Mario Party in a long, long time. I highly recommend it if you have a friend to pick it up with.
Tumblr media
Just Shapes & Beats
Got this game for a bit of random multiplayer. It’s a pretty fun, music based bullet hell game all about staying alive through the song while crazy stuff happens on screen. The story mode doesn’t overstay its welcome, but there’s also plenty of content and challenges for those who are so inclined, and only one of the levels felt utterly, bullshitingly unfair (which is really good with bullet hells) so It’s a fun time if you’re into top down bullet hells, and better with a friend in challenge mode
Tumblr media
Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee [Switch]
I could write a dissertation on this game and how it’s neither good or bad; it’s just kinda... there. Some aspects are incredibly disappointing; the capture mechanics are absolute garbage, forced motion controls are atrocious, player/npc animations and interactions are completely stilted and lazy, the world is very bland vs Sun and Moon, the performance in handheld mode drops frames sometimes which is unacceptable, there’s almost zero post game, and even more. It’s by all means an HD reskin of a Gameboy game running on their crappy 3DS engine.
But there’s a lot of good here as well; seeing pokemon in the overworld is amazing and should be the case in the series moving forward, partner pokemon (eevee) are fun and fucking adorable, riding pokemon is great, having fast captures makes chaining a really fun mechanic, Having some of the E4 and Gym leaders interact with you during your quest makes the world interesting, connectivity with go is very limited but still good, having only one pokemon be obtainable only once in the game is a welcome and frankly overdue change in the game, removing breeding/abilities/held items really streamlines the mechanics and makes the game more enjoyable in a lot of cases, and I could go on.
I’m not going to recommend it, but I mean if you liked any pokemon game you’re definitely not going to not have fun with this one, even if the randomness in the capture mechanics frustrates you to no end

Super Smash Bros Ultimate [Switch]
So I mean it’s smash bros. Not much really to say about that, it’s pretty good. I kinda like Smash Bros not just for the multiplayer but the single-player as well, which is why Brawl is still my Favorite so take that as my approach here. The normal gameplay is fine, though the input buffer feels wonky at times and some characters are much harder to play against than others, which in combination with the sheer amount of characters makes it very difficult to get the hang of and counter accordingly, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just the barrier between playing casually and playing a bit more seriously feels sudden when randomly coming across characters that have inherent advantages from being wonky. Cloud for example seems to have a move for evertyhing, can spit out attacks very quickly, and if you try anything silly they’ll just charge a better move, and then randomly fighting a Ganondorf is like “I hope they don’t know how to read you because you can die at like 35 from a single fuck up”
The Single Player content though was... Disappointing. Not nearly as bad as Sm4sh, but it seems like they spent so much time putting as many characters and stages in the game as possible that they realized they wouldn’t have time to do old game modes the same way, so they made a system which allowed them to make custom smash battles with weird attributes and built the entirety of the bonus content on that. There’s really only adventure mode which is just a progression of Event Matches which gets somewhat stale and repetitive quickly, Mob Smash is just not really that fun past your first run or two, All-Star Smash is actually near impossible and not even rewarding, Classic does one or two cool ideas with routes but they clearly got lazy with a lot of characters there too, and the only platforming challenge in the game is the bonus level which takes 30 seconds and never changes.
Their Online mode is unacceptably bad and lacks options for random fights as well, and given that they’re charging for it this is just flat-out unacceptable. Buy it if you like playing Smash for the Multiplayer (which is almost everyone), but this is a hard pass if you were expecting a large amount of interesting content like Brawl’s Adventure mode had. Or are incapable of learning past a certain point, like me.

Katamari Damacy Reroll [Switch]
So after having played Forever earlier in the year and hearing how much praise this got, I had very High expectations! Unfortunately the controls are still ehhhhh and the game is surprisingly short; I beat it over the course of a 4ish hour flight. It’s definitely a lot nicer to you than Forever is, but in terms of amount of content it’s not aged well. If you’ve not played it before, pick it up on sale, but as far as I can tell this outing doesn’t add anything new to the original and it’s just a straight up re-release

Mario Tennis Aces [Switch]
So does anyone actually look forward to Mario Tennis Games? The past two have been husks of content and this one’s not really much better. The charging mechanic is interesting, but doesn’t feel that consistent or fair in some scenarios, but like was anyone waiting for this to get announced? Or is this just a “safe” series that sells okay and pads out the library for quick cash?”
It’s weird that they knew the Adventure mode was something fans really, REALLY wanted and touted it as some huge deal, even advertising it with a cool pre-rendered cutscene, and the whole mode with all challenges turns out to be at most a couple hours long, repetitive, and only actually has the two cutscenes (the 2nd being like 10 seconds). They made some silly RPG level up mechanic which didn’t feel like it made any difference, you can’t change your character so you’re really only learning how Mario plays, and it does a really poor job of explaining the different kinds of shots to you so it’s not even good for learning the game. I wasn’t expecting an experience worth telling for generations with the plot either, but even that gives up on itself; Luigi is possessed but he doesn’t do anything the whole game until you fight him, not even with the 3/5 power stones you have, and these power stones you spent the game collecting don’t do anything or matter because Bowser comes out of no where and “takes” the racket and power stones and challenges you to an admittedly fun boss fight. Not in a cutscene mind you, you’re just told this happens. It’s just lazy.
The game has some visual issues too; it’s missing any sort of stylistic flair and honestly just looks like an up-res’d Wii game, though with smoother models. Shadows flicker and cut through textures, and something weird’s going on with anti-aliasing that makes everything look blurry as hell too. I will say props for going to the effort of making tennis costumes for every character though; so that’s more effort than what went into Ultra Smash.
If you’re a huge, HUGE fan of Mario Tennis, go nuts. But uh, yeah this isn’t really worth your time for the price otherwise

Starlink: Battle for Atlas (Starter Pack) [Switch]
Yeah so it’s rich coming from me, but honestly this game is only hindered by the physical toys. As far as I can tell you can only play as generic Mr. No Personality or Fox, and then you only have the two options for weapons. The game could get interesting combat-wsie with the combinations of ships and like I think 14ish different weapons? But with just the starter pack you run through what the game has to offer pretty quick.
It is interesting though how I very rarely play Ubisoft games and hadn’t played one since their open-world formula milking, but right away I could tell that it was a Ubisoft open world game. There’s a lot to do, a lot of planets to explore, movement is fun and surprisingly easy, combat is pretty straightforward and has potential, but the key thing is that there’s like 30-50 facilities on each planets with like 4 different types of objectives (3 of which are “kill the same bad guys immediately here”), and you can spend hours on one planets doing some minor variance on that same thing over and over and over.
It’s a pretty good start in terms of base mechanics for what would be a cool system for an open StarFox game (and I know it wasn’t trying for that) but the repetitiveness of exploring, frankly pathetic writing in terms of characters, and locking a lot of the interesting content behind toys detracts from the experience. It’s definitely not un-fun, but after clearing 4 planets and seeing that’s just what the game is doing I don’t have any interest in continuing.
At least other than to see StarFox, because Ubisoft did them better justice than Nintendo has in years.
Best Game I Played in 2018: Celeste
Easy choice here, Celeste has a wonderful story, looks gorgeous, plays like a dream and managed to be an incredibly challenging platformer that didn’t make me lose my patience ever, which is AMAZING considering how little patience I have whenever I fail at a game.
I was going to pick the best game that actually came out in 2018 but honestly it’d be between like 4 games that I had gripes with in some way or another, so i’m going to say Overcooked 2 is pretty fucking solid and leave this whole run on sentence in the heading font because why not it’s my dead blog I can do whatever the fuck I wan-
Anyway that’s it. Hope everyone had a good year
