A Beginner's Guide to Learning Cybersecurity

I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!

(Side note: this post is aimed towards the technical side of security, rather than the governance/management side, because the tech stuff is what I'm familiar with.)

Where do I start?

Cybersecurity is a specialization of general tech & therefore builds on some concepts that you'll need to know before you can dive deep into security. It's good to have a background in and understand:

how computers & operating systems work

how to use Linux

computer networking & basic protocols

If you're serious about learning cybersecurity, it can be helpful to look at certifications. Even if you don't want to get certified or take the exam (they can get expensive), they provide you with a list of topics that you can use to guide your self-study. And if you want to find a job, a certification is practically required for getting your foot in the door.

I personally recommend the CompTIA series of certifications, because they're well-recognized and I think they expose you to a good breadth and depth of material to get you started. Start with the A+ certification if you have zero tech background. Start with the Network+ certification if you've never taken a networking course. Once you get your basic computer and networking knowledge down, then you can jump into security. The Security+ is a good starting point.

Do I need to know how to code?

No, but it would be really really helpful. You don't have to be a skilled software engineer, but understanding the basics and being able to write small scripts will give you a solid foundation.

Play Capture the Flag (CTF) games.

Stay up to date with security news via an RSS reader, podcasts, or whatever works for you. Research terms that you're unfamiliar with.

Watch conference talks that get uploaded to YouTube.

Spin up a VM to practice working with tools and experiment on your own computer.

There are lots of brilliant, generous people in cybersecurity who share their knowledge and advice for free. Find their blogs, podcasts, and YouTube channels. Look for local meetups in your area.

I'm still relatively new to the field, but I have a general knowledge of lots of different things, so feel free to send me an ask and I can probably help point you to some resources. We're all in this together!

Hiii! So sorry to bother you but im a total newbie when it comes to digital art and animatics so I was wondering a few things if you don't mind.

1. What programs du you use? Like FlipaClip or Adobe Animate ect..

2. Do you draw with a tablet? On a computer with a mouse, or an Ipad? (Or something else)

3. Any tips for someone drawing digitally/making an animatic for the first time?

Hi, so...I will try to answer you and not to guide you in the wrong direction 😂

So

1. I use Photoshop, for drawing and for animation. BUT I recommend you to use a Clip Studio Paint for animation because it's more suitable for that or smth closer to this. I do it in Photoshop because this is the only app I have for this and I already got used to it too much.

Of course, animation can be done in general through a variety of crutches, for example, when I had problems with the program, I saved the frames separately and put them in the video editor, but I usually did that with small animations

2. I draw on a tablet, a very simple one - One by Wacom CTL - 672 (it's without screen), I believe it's not a bad one for a beginner. I have enough of it to work with, the only thing I would like is a higher level of clicks, so you can find it in about the same price range and with a larger range of clicks if you want.

3.If you want to do animation, it's better to ask other people, I can give you not very good tips, because I started doing animation as a hobby and all I know is all the watching from anime/cartoons.

I can only suggest that you watch animation lessons on YouTube..and to train your eyesight. Start with some simple animation maybe.. my friend sent me one lesson from one artist - Howard Wimshurst, maybe you can find smth interesting there.

I'm sorry I'm not very good at giving advice to people. I'm basically self-taught in terms of drawing, so.. sorry if this is not helpful 😭

Hi, your edits are so beautiful I can’t stop watching! Black sails is the only one of the shows you make edits of that I’ve watched but the combination of the technical side and how you use the themes and story is so good.

I know you’ve mentioned using Lightworks to edit but was wondering if you’d be willing to share how you got started/ learned to edit? I’d love to learn as a creative outlet and to have the skill in general but get so overwhelmed working out where to start (no worries if you aren’t comfortable sharing)

Oh my god, thank you!! That is so nice!! And I would love to help you, even though I'm not the most qualified person to be giving advice.

I actually had to learn to edit on my own for one of my uni classes (I don't study anything even closely related, but I took one film course and our final project was to make a video essay, so I was forced to learn). I honestly do not think it is as difficult as it seems (though it may seem very complicated at first). But don't let it deter you! I have next to no computer skills and I could learn it, so I am absolutely sure that you can too!

I would recommend starting with an easier programme than Lightworks or DaVinci Resolve, though they are both great editing programmes. I was very daunted by all the things they offered at the beginning, so if you are too, it could be a good idea to make your first edit with something like CapCut, which you can even use online without downloading it, just so you get a feel for it. After, I would recommend you follow some beginner-friendly tutorials on youtube for the software you will be using. Don't stress about which one to use too much, I have now used a handful of different ones and although they all have their quirks, most of them follow the same principles.

That is how I learned it, but there are of course other ways as well! If you are more skilled you could begin with a very good programme from the start. The youtube tutorials are great and you honestly don't need all the functions the programmes offer immediately. After you have the basics down (cutting and audio editing), you can do whatever you want and the colouring and transitions can be the additional cherry on top!

How would I go about learning about computer programming? Any advice for absolute beginners?

hm… well, i guess there's two primary ways you can start.

firstly, you could take a course. there are some online that are free to start with, like harvard's cs50, but i personally think the second option is a bit more fun and hands on.

the second option is to take some time to look up coding basics and experiment a bit through a small personal project. you can learn about the basic structure of computer programs and how programming languages work by watching youtube videos, or browsing stack overflow... and from there you can start small by making little programs that can do simple things. after that, it'll be a good foundation into coding more complex things.

old (prehistoric*) yume art I found while looking through the photoshop files on my computer yesterday🙈💘... why don't I draw like this anymore?!🥺 it looks soo funny and cute with the "lively" lineart like this😊 I wish my drawings weren't as stiff and restrained as they are now. especially when comparing to how I freehanded every drawing ~two years ago, basically applying flat colours over the first sketch, and it was already looking finished and pretty to me.

I tend to think that the harder you try - the worse the outcome🤔 like when I learn some new things, and then some more and more and then I don't have my natural "beginner's hand" anymore...🙈 the mooost beutiful (in it's sincerity) art for me is one drawn with the "beginner's hand"!!! I almost got mad at my friend when they called "my peak art of the year" the midest soulless drawing I've made, only because it was rendered in a slightly more realistic detail than I usually do!!!😂🤬🤬

it was not beautiful and not even close to "peak" compared to some pieces, which matter much more to me because of the things I had in mind while making them or something like that☹️ that makes me frustrated! I don't know what "that" exactly, maybe that we all have brains of our own, and one might find beauty in those things, which don't matter much for the others🙈 but I believe that when you're a beginner at something - applies to basically any craft, but I'm talking about the illustrations as in example - when you're a beginner the number of people who could understand your art is really wide. like it's easier to make a point or to be sincere or forthright when you're drawing for the sole purpose of getting your nonexistent thought to come into our material world; to make something that was your own, no-one-else's into a visual information, the other person possibly will be able to understand. when you're a beginner your art is closer to the form of thought, and not complicated by decoratives. I see it like when you're getting more professional and maybe more boastful in your craft, the more you learn, and the more you think over it - the further you get from the natural way of a beginner🤔 you might even get so far you'll forget the beginner's way of doing things completely and focus on other things😄

but that might be someone's goal itself actually! focusing on some other aspects! of course different people have different goals when they study something; the highly mastered technique is as much of an information you could get from an art piece, as the main idea behind it. but for me the way of beginner is the moooost beautiful thing... I'm in love with such careful, but at the same time unencumbered way of thinking🥹🫶 that is why I want to learn how to posture my "beginner's hand" again🤞🤞🤞
