Arano Royal Guard

Good old House Arano from the Battletech videogame by HBS. Go play it right now if you haven't yet, it's a masterpiece turn-based strategy game even if you're not specifically a BT fan.

These minis came from the Alpha Strike box. I'd already done up the IS assault mechs in blue for the "Kestrel's Lament" post so I wanted to do the remaining scout lance in red for contrast.

Extra focus on the bases here. Blue team had rivers/marsh beneath so red gets lava rocks and magma.

It's some rubble flocking painted over with Night Scales metallic black. THIS is how it's supposed to look! Glitters of blues/greens/whites in with the black. Fittingly makes it look like magnetite here. The glitters barely showed at all on the Black Marauder. Maybe because that was painted over a black basecoat? Here it went on raw over un-primed brown gravel and turned out great.

Next I painted white in the gaps, then filled that in with water medium mixed with orange ink.

One more lineup from down low, like they're coming over a ridge. It's easy to forget what mechs might look like coming head-on when we're always looking down on the minis from above.

Also screw whoever made the Wraith's short designation "TR#". I guess "WTH" wouldn't go over well haha. But TR? For what, Troll?

WIPs here. Steps taken: -Platemail silver primer -Blood Red speedpaint -Gold/Night Scales highlights -Dark Tone wash (Only necessary over the non-speedpaints) -Blue, then watered-down white in jumpjets -Matte white, then inks on cockpits and lasers -Glued base flocking then prepared as mentioned above -Gloss varnish (extra heavy on cockpits/lasers)

Next for the remaining clan star, they're primed in black, I figure the classic bad guys of Smoke Jaguar should be a good opponent.

Mechwarrior 3 was my introduction to the franchise. "Die, Clanner!"

Doesn’t know what heat management is

Uses whatever pronouns make it gay for you to hit on them

Is built like a wolverine (short, really buff, chunky around the middle)

Doesn’t remember where their callsign came from, but is certain it’s embarrassing

Got really drunk and painted an interesting (read: very naked) mural of Kamea Arano on the Leopard’s hull one night not too long after the Incident, sang sad heartbreaky country ballads the whole time

How do you feel about the Locust?

Look at him go.

I love the Locust! It's a classic for a reason! Might not be the best mech out there, it's cheap, cute, and fast as fuck boiiii. Literally everyone has them (my mercenary company on my current run of the HBS Battletech game has, like, 50 of them sitting in storage).

The variants are all, in general, pretty good.

Personally I'm very drawn to the -6M because THREE HUNDRED AND TWO POINT FOUR KM/H!

Aight folks how do I get into WH 40k?

I’ve had many friends be surprised that I know basically nothing about it, but here’s what I’m into:

- TTRPGs (D&D, Pathfinder, BattleTech which I have never actually played)

- games that are based off TTRPGS, and CRPGs (Baldur’s Gate series, HBS Shadowrun, HBS BattleTech, KOTOR, Tyranny)

- text-heavy games (Roadwarden, Disco Elysium, Shadowrun, Citizen Sleeper)

- grimdark-ish stuff that maybe leans towards historical fantasy (The Witcher, The Black Company, Dishonored, The Lightbringer Series)

- certain sci-fi and/or military stuff (Fallout, Warframe, BattleTech, Battle Brothers)

I got addicted to this game since October 2022 and have about 1000 hours of play time at this time (May 2023); which is a personal record for me. The HBS game and the franchise has become an obsession for me, and this post is for everyone out there sharing the same passion. My salutes my fellow nerds ✊

I enjoy the battletech 2018 game a fair bit but I fucking hate having to fight multiple Lance sized elements in a single mission like I’m sorry HBS but trying to make “XCOM but with mechs” you’ve kinda shot yourself in the foot by doing anything that involves more or less than a 4 on 4. The difficulty ratings for missions also flat out lies a lot which is fun when a routine fight ends up having you fight a group of enemies three times your number

Oops accidentally a bit of fan lore about Vaea "Spectre" Saar of the Spectre's Sirens Merc company from my story HBS Battletech run, post campaign :

Vaea founds herself a little nation on a (Deep?) Periphery world she names Siren's Heart and also marries Sluggo, her gauss sniper right hand woman, who is lit.

And when they're in their late 40s, a small Clan detachment shows up and gives a *batchall* of one Star, surely plenty to take out this little backwater. Vaea doesn't understand Clanbrain but she groks an honorable challenge, and so agrees to respond with just her lance.

Which is, of course, her heavily customized Banshee, Sluggo's gauss armed Highlander, and a pair of King Crabs, all of which have been tinkered with over the years to fit her company's fast and hard style

The numbers are almost immediately evened by Sluggo popping a head, as she does, and that sets the tone of the engagement. Clantech may be *better* overall, but the Sirens collected a fair bit of Lostech over their career, and the Clanners are unprepared for the fury of their armored charge, including Spectre's love of "dishonorable" melee combat. Her Banshee is jet boosted and reinforced to easily handle the impact as it crashes out of the sky for an Inazuma kick, shrugging off fire on the way to smash her next target.

The King Crabs just hang back to provide suppressing fire, guiding the targets into Sluggo's sights and Vaea's fists.

(My backstory choices in game had her originating in the Deep Periphery and becoming a merc after her family was betrayed and murdered, so maybe Siren's Heart is her reclaiming her heritage. Oh, and during my run, I ended up with all-women MechWarriors, including a trans woman Kickstarter backer character, thus the Sirens name)

I’ve grown quite the addiction to HBS Battletech recently. I tell myself I’ll just play one or two missions and end up spending the entire night playing.
