Hello! I hope you guys are doing well under the Lockdown and now that we’re entering a time where the Lockdown is now easing. Even though Lockdown is easing my content will still be primarily created at home, in my room, for a while! As you’ve seen before, my normal content was outside, travelling and being in Lockdown I’ve had to get a little creative to make new content. I thought I’d share some ideas with you and my behind the scenes to my new shoot days!

 1. Get All The Little Details

Forget about your background, get up close to the camera and show off the little details of your outfit, shoes or jewellery, for example. With close up shots your background won’t matter so you won’t have to worry about that.

2. Mirror Selfies

A classic simple idea! Make sure you’re in a good spot in terms of lighting and you’re good to go! If you have a tripod you could use that to create shots with you and the mirror, looking in the mirror creating a real “Mirror, Mirror on the wall” moment.

3. Bed Shots

Get your best bed sheets out, surround yourself with pillows or get creative with balloons for example. These photos above were taken in a hotel room in Rome, I wish my room had a massive mirror like that! I’ve just added these so you get the idea of taking pictures on your bed. BTS for this shot – I got these balloons from a store called Tiger for my Valentine’s Day inspired pictures. It took a couple tries to throw the balloon up and make it look effortless! But perseverance pays off – look at that perfect heart in the mirror!

4. Find a Plain Wall

Find a section in your room that has a plain/blank wall, like shown in the photo. BTS for this shot – I’m actually sitting on my bed frame where I’ve got a plain wall behind my bed, and I had my tripod on my bed and tried not to move too much and accidentally knock over my camera whilst I set up the self-timer!

5. Garden

If you are lucky to have a garden, take advantage of this and take some of your shots outdoors. You could set up with a tripod and a chair, or with a mirror or around some flowers. 

6. Flatlays

Flatlays are photos of an arrangement of whatever you want and however you want spread them around the flat surface. Such a perfect idea for indoor content, you can do this on the floor, on your bed, on a table. BTS for these shots – the first one with the Lounge Underwear and lipsticks, was taken on my bed for a Valentine’s Day inspired flatlay. The second one was taken on my floor with one of my summer dresses used for the background, featuring my Michael Kors bag, Malone Souliers sandals and Fenty Beauty products.

7. White Sheet Background

Hop on this trend! Grab yourself a white sheet or any colour sheet if you want to switch it up and you can create your own background. BTS for these shots – I put my white sheet over my full body mirror and put it next to my white wardrobe to get closer to my window so I could get some natural lighting. I didn’t have much space so I had my camera on my radiator (not on obviously!) and I was sitting on the floor but then realised I was too low so I had to get all my pillows to give me some height.

With creating content at home the key is to be creative – use what you have in your home, props, shadows, natural light. There are loads of ways to find inspiration on Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok.

NEWS: Four Quarters goes East

Fancy grabbing a drink and stepping back into your nostalgic youth? Well, at Four Quarters, the people that brought you London's first classic and rare arcade games bar, you can. Just a stone's throw away from one of the busiest shopping centres in London, the team at Four Quarters have just launched their 2nd retro gaming bar at a brand new night-life destination – Here East. This follows on from a very warm and successful response to their first branch, that opened in Peckham, three years ago.

Expanding on from their original location, Four Quarters East features classic and rare vintage arcade games – Street Fighter II, Pac-Man, Point Blank and Tron to name a few, original consoles housed in custom-built bookable console booths, pinball machines, and even the tables have arcade games built into them! Not to mention a stunning collection of cocktails, local craft beers and hearty food to keep you going while you lay down some combos.

When I initially read the invite, I had no idea what to expect. Apart from the facts; cocktails – check, video games – check. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see they had mixed industrial-loft chic with old school arcade comfort. A place where casual gamers, opportunistic gamers, hardcore gamers and don't-give-a-damn-about-games gamers, can come together and have a good night. The music is a strict “80's and 90's only” policy. Joe Dowling, one of the founders used to be a DJ. He added, “if it mentions, or references the 80's or 90's, then it's ok. Otherwise, no”. Gotta love his passion. You see, Four Quarters is so steeped in the '80's and 90's' era, everything is touched by this period of time when gaming really took off. Tracks like Wu-Tang, Missy Elliott, that were most likely playing in the background at some point, as you raced around another corner on Daytona or fired your last round on Point Blank.

Even the cocktails are named after games, as Wray is my tipple of choice, I opted for the Donkey Kong Punch, which went down very well. The attention to detail inside is immense. Even the gaming booths are hand built. Along with the housing of the screens, consoles and games. Next to the screens are square boxes that you can change the console on. Just pressing the button. It flicks from SNES to N64. Mind. Officially. Blown.

The founders, Joe Dowling and Tom Humphrey, have gone to great lengths to ensure their guests are comfortable, watered, well-fed and entertained. They also own Retro Games Base in Streatham, which as the name suggests specialise in only in retro games, which is where the idea for Four Quarters was born. Both clearly share a passion for classic and rare games so I caught up with Tom, to find out more.

How did Four Quarters begin?

We opened Peckham almost 3 years ago in June. It was about 6 months before that we got together and organised things seriously. Previous to that, Joe (one of the other owners) and myself, opened a video game shop in Streatham, that's how it all began, and we've still got that. Just retro games, no current generation games, called Retro Game in Streatham. Whilst we were there, we were kind of dreaming and fleshing out this kind of idea. Buying arcade games here and there, when we could, chucking them in storage, slowly and surely we had loads of them and found some other investors who were up for it and opened Peckham. Now we have East.

Has gaming always been a passion of yours?

Yes, video games always have been. I'm more the games guy than the beer guy (Four Quarters offer craft beer on tap). Joe and Fran, Fran manages East, and Joe manages Peckham are very clued up on the drinks side of things. My passion is the games, that's really where I come from. So I do a lot of restoration of the machines, repairs, maintenance and the logistics of getting them turned around and if there are any problems get them fixed.

Four Quarters: Bar or Arcade?

We are a bar first and an arcade second, rather than an arcade and then a bar, because the games work a lot better when it's that way round. Even if you're not a hardcore gamer, you can still come to this bar, have a drink, love it and just have a great time. We have many people, specifically talking about the experience of Peckham as we have only been here a few weeks, many people come to Peckham that don't ever go and play the games. Aesthetically they look really nice and we've got a really nice bar, a nice vibe, so people like that. It’s unique and there is nostalgia, even if you're not into gaming. Whereas if it's the other way around, it can become a very 'nerdy' venue, I'm a nerd, I don't care [LAUGHS]. But then your bar becomes a lot more niche and specialised and to people that are not bang into the games, it can become a bit intimidating and a bit weird.

Why Hackney Wick?

Well, Peckham was the first choice for the first location because we knew it was an up-and-coming place to put a bar for a start. Then we found a unit that made sense to do our first one so. That's been a flying success, so we wanted to expand, and we were looking all over the place, north, east, south, west. Literally everywhere within the M25. There are many boxes that you try to tick off when searching for a venue, you can never really tick them all off, and we hit a lot of hurdles, a lot of venues we found didn't really work out, so then this place came up. We did our research and realised they were trying to make this area London's new tech hub. The space directly above us, I believe, was the media centre for the Olympics. They're pushing it for augmented reality and virtual reality and that side of tech, so we knew that if we got our kind bar in this location and that does happen and that does kick off, then we know our bar is going to go far.

Have you had a good reception from the locals?

Very much so. We've had a good response. This area's quite quiet at the moment because it's off the beaten track there are still a lot of things being built around here and still a lot of unoccupied space, but it's also a lovely spot. You have a lot of people, walking up the canal, families, on the weekends. Last Summer, before we were actually here, they had a lot of deck chairs out the front, it's south facing, so you get the sun all day and you can take your drinks outside, no licensing issues there. So a lovely, lovely Summer spot.

Is Four Quarters family friendly?

Yes very. We get quite a lot of families come here. We do at Peckham. I believe it'll be even more so here. One, because of it's location – there's a lot of families walking up and down the canal and two, there are a couple of local kids playgrounds, so you can have a wonder around. Plus, just the idea of what we do works very well for families because, I've got an 18-month-old and I know that when he's 5 or 6, and he's on the Playstation 5 or 6, or whatever they're on, if I stumbled across this place, I would still take him in here. And show him this is what I used to play, that's what happens amongst families, I think it works really nicely. Parents get to show the kids this is what I used to play. The kids actually enjoy it as much as the parents get nostalgic about it, because all of the games are pick up and play, they're suitable for 7-year-olds to 60-year-olds.

Are there plans to expand further?

Definitely not off the cards. Literally, we have been open here for about 3 weeks and my brain hasn't really gone off on that tangent yet, but I'm pretty sure there will be further expansion at some point.

What would you say your most favourite game of all time is?

[LAUGHS] Oooh that's difficult!

Ok, your top 3 or 5?

On consoles; probably Micro Machines on the Megadrive, California Games on the Sega Master system and then for arcade, I really love Super Hang On and Crazy Taxi at the moment.

The overall vibe is very relaxed, and lends well to those who like to a drink, a laugh and some friendly - or not so friendly - competition. With over 60 arcade machines across both bars, you will be spoilt for choice. Although it is a bit off the beaten track, it's one of those places that is well worth the effort, because once you get there you do not want to leave! Even after you have used up all of your quarters. Yes, the games use ACTUAL quarters. 100% authentic gaming zone. No longer the reserve of the 'geek' squad.
