David Arnold’s ‘end of the world’ complex and multi-genre soundtrack.

From the Award-winning composer of Sherlock and Casino Royale comes a follow up to the hugely successful, Emmy nominated Good Omens soundtrack.

Good Omens series 2 premiered on Prime Video on 28th July. The series follows the odd couple, angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) in their quest to sabotage the end of the World. The six-episode sequel to the popular adaptation of the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, concerns the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) arriving without his memories to Aziraphale’s bookshop. Aziraphale and Crowley attempt to find out what happened to Gabriel, whilst hiding him from Heaven and Hell, both eager to find him.

The Soundtrack

David Arnold’s soundtrack to Good Omens was first released in 2019 to favourable reviews, with BBC Music Magazine calling it “a rollicking trip to hell and back”. Blueprint Magazine described it as “a great listen” and Sci Fi Bulletin commented on “plenty of memorable themes” to conclude that “This is another work of art from Arnold”. At times nostalgic and eerie but always varied, beautiful and full of excitement, the Good Omens 2 soundtrack showcases Arnold’s every skill from his composer arsenal. Featured here are orchestral arrangements with sprinkling of Sugar Plum Fairy pizzicato and percussion, jaunty strings and mighty choral sweeps from Crouch End Festival Chorus. Added to the mix are rock guitar riffs, and psychedelic 70s sounds and all together they create a haunting otherworldly feel, complementing the fantasy and the quirky humour of the show. The spirited Waltz of the opening theme is also present in the second series and it wonderfully sets the scene for fantastical mayhem. In series 2, this robust, evocative, and funny music entity, becomes yet again another character in the story. Let's unpack:

John Laurie, Managing Director at the Glenturret distillery, where my personal favorite blend (oh, well, The Famous Grouse - I know, really LOL, but it is what it is) is made. A long, interesting career that started in 2000, as General Manager of a fitness club network headquartered in Irvine, California (LA Fitness) and got him more and more involved in whisky business since 2014, as General Manager of Edrington, the Macallan distillery. If it sounds familiar to you, well... always remember that #silly old slogan on the Pall Mall cigarette packs: 'wherever particular people congregate'. I know I do 😎.

Something immediately piqued my interest in this short bio: 'opened a fine dining restaurant that achieved a Michelin star inside 7 months'. And it is, of course, true: part of the reasons I am always using LinkedIn to place people, is that it would be counterproductive to blatantly lie, there. Or childish: even McSideburns knows that, with his very empty page and 1 contact - but what the hell do I know, though, he's more private than if he worked for the MI-6.

The one starred Michelin restaurant who got 'le macaron' in seven months is The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant, that opened in July 2021, on the distillery's premises and got it by February 2022. The first time a distillery wins a Michelin star, by the way:

Now, where did I read a similar business story, not so long ago and wrote about it? Oh, that's right, Tom Kitchin's first restaurant in EDI apparently followed the same yellow brick road to instant success, back in 2007:

Again, I am sensing a theme, here. Associating with young, dynamic and daring entrepreneurial voices in the whisky business. Not exactly the manwhore, closeted gay, peasant and crook some hypocrites would like to portray. I have to say, I am always, always over the moon glad to see the real thing showing up from time to time: a consistent effort to get things done, properly.

But sure, you believe what you want. I cannot force anyone to go beyond a sometimes very limited world view.

Second person being missed is David Coulthard, F1 legend, but also...

Company Director at Whisper Films, one of the most dynamic, fastest growing UK media groups. He founded it in 2010, along Jake Humphries, BBC F1 commenter extraordinaire and Sunil Patel, a former BBC producer, but also a Board Member of the Edinburgh TV Festival:

S knows exactly what he's doing, where he's going and when and with whom he is seen. By this point in time, I think we might safely think his somewhat lackadaisical recent Insta follows (Romanian female MMA athlete? ROFLMAO, really and I howled) as gently trolling this very obsessed invested fandom. As I wrote it many, many times already, the Scottish Mafia is a reality - and good for him, really, to use what is readily available. And if you still had any doubt that was a business informal meeting, The Highland Chieftain tagged SS in his story.

He's going to laugh all the way to the bank, this one. You'll see. Great news and I will always be here to put it in context. Some of the things being heavily peddled around in here might not be very interesting to me - but this yes: this is exciting.

Daily update post:

The IDF has entered the Shifa hospital today in Gaza, and searched it for hostages, but none were found. There was info that they had been held there, so the time the IDF has given the civilians to evacuate, was probably used by the terrorists to move the hostages. A possible scenario is that they were moved to southern Gaza.

Meanwhile, the BBC had to apologize today for "misquoting" Reuters twice. The original report said the IDF entered the hospital with medical teams and Arabic speakers. Instead of reporting this, the BBC said the IDF was targeting these groups:

Yesterday in Washington DC, a pro-Israel rally drew a crowd of 290,000 people, making it the biggest Jewish rally in modern history, and the biggest pro-Israel one:

I'm sorry I didn't know I can watch it online... Something to add to this is that there's a group of 900 people from Detroit, who flew to Washington DC to participate in the rally, but were stranded in the Dulles airport, because their bus drivers refused to drive them to a pro-Israeli rally.

American congress woman Rashida Tlaib is known to have been a part of a hidden American-Palestinian facebook group since 2017. In 2019, it came to light that the founder of the group has doubted the Holocaust has happened, and a lot of criticism was aimed at Tlaib for her membership in the group, but she didn't leave it. Now, it's been shown that there were posts in this facebook group celebrating Hamas' Oct 7 massacre.

I mentioned peace activist Vivian Silver, whose body was identified yesterday, in this post. A lot of "peace activists" tweeted in mourning today. I haven't seen one who has mentioned that Hamas murdered her. One explicitly said, "We don't know who murdered her," even though there's no doubt that Hamas terrorists murdered her on Oct 7 (she was on the phone with her son until the almost last moments).

As rockets from Gaza continue to be fired at Israel, here's a small reminder that around 1,000 misfired, and killed Palestinians:

He was at the Nova music festival on Oct 7. He managed to make it out, and also got his girlfriend out of there. But then he insisted on going back to try and get a good friend out. That's when Hamas terrorists got to him. He had a 6 year old daughter. May his memory be a blessing.

BBC Comedy confirms there will be one more Ghosts Christmas special

There'll be one more visit to Button House in 2023

Having confirmed earlier this year that the much-loved comedy Ghosts would be coming to an end after the upcoming fifth and final series, the team behind the show have today announced that there will in fact be a Christmas special.

The Ghosts team posted on social media: “The final series of Ghosts starts on Friday... but there might be one last present under the Christmas tree this year #BBCGhosts”

Ghosts has become a television highlight of the Christmas period with 2022’s special securing 5.9 million viewers, making it the biggest comedy of the year.

Last year’s Christmas special was warmly received:

Finally got to see Peter Pan Goes Wrong in West End with Charlie Russell, Matthew Cavendish, Greg Tannahill, Matthew Howell, Harry Kershaw, Clark Devlin, Jamie Birkett, Chris Leask, Ellie Morris, and Jean-Luke Worrell! They were all amazing, I thought I'd share some of my fav bits! (Warning: There's a lot)

• Firstly, programme stuff: the note from the director basically just being Chris and Trevor arguing like a married couple. Chris being too scientific and Trevor having to remind him it's supposed to be festive.

● Them leaving a note asking if anybody was a flying operator as they didn't currently have one😭

• Robert leaving the children of the Cornley Youth Theatre abandoned in a forest with limited food and knives,to prepare for their performance of Lord of the Flies. NSPCC and police had to intervene, 2 of the children are still missing today (Ben McIntyre and Sarah Cordell)

• Jonathon's interview where's he's practically begging the interviewer to take note he was 'fashionably late', when he was actually waiting for 6 hours.

• Jonathon saying (in the interview), he's been focusing on humanitarian work, such as adopting a child from Ethiopia and a child from Vietnam. And then the interviewer just replied with "That is Brad Pitt. Everything you have just said is about Brad Pitt and not yourself."

• In the cast section, Chris Bean writing "I would like to remind my father that there is a spare ticket at the box office for him if he chooses to show up." That's so sad😭

• Trevor's section ended with "trevorzbeatz/YouTube.co.uk" 😭

• Pip (assistant stage manager) just says: "They call me Big Pip up north. Trevor's cousin. Out and about and that. Nice one." Like okay yh me too Big Pip

• They tried to feed the crocodile an alarm clock😭 (RIP Nadia tho😔)

• Annie left a little note saying she's "looking for a man" and then there's some description of what she's (not) looking for

• A page saying welcome to the theatre, but it is still very much in character😭 "Director Chris Bean always fulfils his promise of giving us a show we will remember for a very long time."

•Pre-show antics: one of the assistant stage managers (I'm gonna guess Pip? Not too sure tho) was walking around looking for a hammer. I noticed that he'd act like he was looking around and then when he spotted a child he'd go and ask them. I thought that was cute🥹

• I couldn't see the wires going through the audience cause I had seats up high, but I did see Robert pulling the end of the wire whilst on stage with the help of an audience member

• Dennis was late I think, ran across the stage from the audience with a bag on

• Lucy suddenly ran off stage, Robert not far behind shouting things like "You have to do it!" (And then later on she ran back on stage,but it seemed Robert got caught up in a convo)

• Now onto the actual show, I thought Dennis singing les mis due to his headgear was pretty funny seeing as les mis was about a door or 2 down

• At one point we were clapping for something (can't remember what, but it was during the beginning Darling Family scene), and Max joined in with the clapping. Sandra had to tell him to stop with a pointed glare and a lil hand gesture

• Every appearance with Robert as the shadow was amazing, I know it's simple but I'm always impressed with the rug pull and the way he lands

• During the bit where there's too much smoke and it engulfs the pirates, Trevor comes to the rescue but does hit Chris in the arse by accident, christrev anybody?

• I will forever love Robert trying to get Dennis to pick up the sword, Dennis picking up the boat paddle and Robert going on a rant about how he's been moving his arms for the past 5 mins why would he need the paddle

• During the interval the lights would still go out occasionally, fun touch

• As Jonathan flew up before crashing down, a banner fell down with Robert holding a bean, a reference of his show Jack and the bean

• Before this, I'd only seen the BBC recorded version of Peter Pan Goes Wrong, so I rlly enjoyed the changes. Such as the mermaids, but I RLLY laughed at Robert being the Mr Bumble in Oliver that killed a child. Especially when he went to be Peter Pan before starting to sing 'Food, Glorious Food"

• The whole poison bit was incredible, Harry's improv was on FIRE. We obvs did the traditional pantomime business which made Chris mad, he very much gave teacher vibes as he sat down on the set and said it was our own time we were wasting. He also complained that this was only the matinée and they still had an evening performance to get to. Then he pointed out how somebody in the audience was hissing, "Nobody goes to a show and says 'Yeah it was good but the person in the fourth row wouldn't stop hissing'" (this resulted in a lot of children hissing whenever he appeared on stage). Then when it got to the poison bit, a child was yelling at him to hurry up, causing Chris to go on a rant about how he didn't even want children there, sitting there on their booster seats. After the child yelled at him multiple times, Chris gave up and told the child to open it for him, which they did. Then as he was leaving, we were booing again and he was like "NO NO DONT BOO ME, IT WAS THE CHILD THAT POISIONED HIM." Then as he exited, he said something along the lines of "blame the child murderer." It was insane.

• Then, when Peter asked who would try to poison him, Tink/Annie pointed at the child that opened the bottle. I think Chris Leask actually had to turn his head downwards and to the side to hide his laughing.

• I've pointed this out before, but I'm so endeared with how worried Chris was when Annie was unconscious. HE KNEELED THERE HOVERING OVER HER BODY JUST LIKE TOUCHING HER FACE, NOT SPEAKING FOR AWHILE. Adorable. Every characters reaction was adorable...sorry Annie

• I just have to say Francis' Cabaret performance to distract us from Annie was amazing. Loved the audience clapping along as well and the rest of the cast looking absolutely shocked and confused

• I loved that we heard a whole marriage fall apart through Dennis' headgear. I want to know more abt them, the husband that took over to help Dennis sounded sweet

• When Lucy slid down the ship in her wheelchair she was flung out and then caught by Trevor in a sort of bear hug, Lucy's legs wrapped around his torso. Trevor was SEVERELY judging the cast HE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THEM. They're besties ur honour, I thought it was so cute

• Loved Francis' Cabaret performance again during the big fight scene with the set moving.

• Trevor saying something like "You've got to be joking" when Lucy picked up the book 😭

• I wanted to scream laugh at Chris lying in the bed like an ill victorian child as Lucy closed up the story, and then Dennis choosing to lie on the squished bottom bunk

• As Lucy continued to read, Chris, Sandra, Trevor, Dennis, and Max were all checking up on one another in the background. Hugs, shoulder grabs. Guys, I love Sandra and Chris' dynamic so much, Sandra was making sure he got off the bed alright and then gave him a hug

• Of course the whole end song, Max as the crocodile encouraging us to clap

It was so amazing, everybody was fantastic!! My jaw still aches from laughing so hard! Hope ppl found this interesting cause I always love when other ppl share what happened during their show😭

LOUIS TOMLINSON HAS ANNOUNCED THE 2023 EDITION OF HIS AWAY FROM HOME FESTIVAL

He'll be joined by Blossoms, The Cribs, HotWax and more.

Louis Tomlinson has announced the 2023 edition of his Away From Home Festival.

Following two sell-out events in London (2021) and Malaga (2022), the one-day festival conceived and curated by Louis will return this year at Lido di Camaiore, Italy on Saturday 19th August.

Joining him on the bill will be fellow former Dork cover stars Blossoms, indie legends The Cribs, Hastings upstars HotWax and Newcastle’s Andrew Cushin, with more acts to be announced. The festival will also feature DJ sets throughout the day from BBC Radio 1’s Abbie McCarthy and The Libertines’ Carl Barât.

Tickets for the event go on pre-sale tomorrow, Friday 26th May at 9am BST, with general sale starting o Monday 29th May at 9am BST.

Earlier today I posted about John Robins' Chortle blog from the 2007 Edinburgh Festival. This made me remember that we do have other records of him around that time, when he sat in with Jon Richardson on the BBC 6 Music radio show while Russell was in Australia. And he was a guest on the Jon Richardson Show a few times, post-Russell's departure, in 2008-09. All of which I of course re-listened to a little while ago, because I've been following his other podcast/radio/TV/stand-up things alongside the radio show in chronological order, and those were rare examples of stuff from before the XFM chronology. So I listened to it a while ago, but was reminded of it today by those Chortle things, and as a result I now have a terrible song stuck in my head that I need to tell people about.

On the BBC 6 Music show in January 2009, they played a song off what they referred to as his "album", and I was surprised I hadn't heard of that before. John sometimes talk about how he was in a few bands when he was young, but they all sound like very, very low-level things that did a few student gigs but wouldn't have released an album. I had no idea there was a John Robins album out there.

They then played the song, and it was really weird. It was clearly a joke, but it wasn't really comedy. I mean, I guess it's technically comedy. But it didn't seem like enough of a joke to justify how bad it was. Like the lyrics were meant to be funny, but the song itself wasn't a joke, it was meant to be a genuinely funny song. That they released on an album full of, they promised us, similar songs. As of January 2009, this was something that had just come out, and he was playing it on Jon Richardson's radio show in what appeared to be an earnest attempt to get publicity and sell it, he read out a link where people could go to buy the album (obviously I immediately went to that link and it is long dead, a quick look around the internet suggests that it is no longer for sale).

I was listening to this 2009 radio show, and I kept waiting for John Robins to make some sort of joke about it. To acknowledge that this was a really weird stupid thing he did, and they were playing it on the radio as a sort of bit. But that never came.

So, the album is called Doing it with Women. The song they played is the title track. I can see where he was going with it. I think that kind of thing was big in the 00s, over-the-top masculine bravado where the joke is that obviously this man is not actually fucking all those bitches as he claims. Kitson used to do a lot of that, it was actually a staple of Chocolate Milk Gang humour in its day. Parody rap battles and shit like that. Obviously people still do comedy like that, but I think it was particularly big in those years. But I think that stuff only works if you make it really, really clear what you're doing. And this song... nothing was clear about it. Nothing was clear and it did not work at all. It doesn't work as comedy, and it definitely doesn't work as music.

I did listen to that episode initially and think, this seems like something I'd expect from a much younger John Robins. Like when they played those excerpts from his days as a student DJ at Oxford, and it was painfully bad but also adorably earnest and sweet and fun to listen to. The Doing it with Women song would make sense if someone uncovered a thing that John Robins made as a university student. Not something he put out in 2009, when I am listening to it for the sake of hearing young John Robins be young, but still, he was well into his comedy career and in his late twenties.

Because of this, I was quite pleased when a few weeks after listening to that, I reached the April 2017 episodes of the Radio X show, when John and Elis covered the drive time slots five nights a week, and had too much time to fill and may have been hard up for content. John Robins mentioned that he once put an album out, and Elis asked him when this was, and John replied, "Far too recently." This was a relief to me - he does know now. He might have been too old by 2009 to think this was a good idea, but at least by 2017, he was aware that not only was it a bad idea, but it was the sort of idea he really should have outgrown by that age.

John: I think it speaks volumes to how embarrassed I am of the album that -

Elis: That you've gone crimson.

John: That in three and a half years of doing this show, I've never mentioned it. Even though it would make for quite good content.

And that would be why I hadn't heard of this album before, even though I didn't listen to the BBC 6 Music stuff until I was already a ways into the XFM/Radio X show (I did break the chronology following a little bit there), and would have expected to know about something like that. Again, here's the relevant clip:

Obviously by the next day (again, they were covering the daily slots that week so they had a lot of hours to cover and really needed the content), they had procured a copy of the Doing it with Women album and played bits of it on the radio while making fun of it. It is great fun to listen to John Robins scramble to clarify that he knows this was not an acceptable thing to record and put in an album, it was a different time, 2009, he does not stand by any of this, he respects women, really, very much. He keeps going between trying to explain why this seemed like a good idea at the time, and disowning it entirely.

For those who do not listen to this radio show and don't know how John Robins' voice normally sounds, he doesn't always sound like he's about to cry. Just when he's talking about terrible albums he made not long enough ago (I mean, I have heard a few other things make his voice crack like that, but not all that many).

Anyway, the reason for this post is that reading those Chortle blogs today reminded me of this story, and being reminded of this story made me think of that song - the title track that he played on the BBC 6 Music show in 2009. And that is why, all day now, I have had "Doing it with women is my favourite kind of hobby" stuck in my head. Because as terrible as the song is, it's got a beat that can be hard to extract from your brain, and it's incredibly annoying. It's really, really annoying, and it's been stuck in my head for so long now, I try playing other songs but then that one just comes back in. So I thought I'd share this and inflict it on other people too. I can't carry this alone.

Wherever they appear, they conquer hearts: Joker Out's first solo concert in Belgrade

One of the most sought-after young bands in the region, the Slovenian shagadelic rock'n'roll attraction Joker Out, announced their first solo concert in Belgrade on November 3 at the Dom omladine.

After selling out two solo concerts in Novi Sad in just a few days, the young Slovenian band is planning to meet the Belgrade audience as well. Their festival performance at this year's Belgrade Beer Fest was one of the most attended, and the audience showed interest in wanting to see them again at an independent concert. Serbian fans flawlessly as a choir sing their songs in Slovene. They also released a single in Serbian language called "Demoni" last fall, showing how much they care about the Serbian audience, which also received their second song in Serbian called "Ona" very well.

Wherever they appear, they conquer hearts with their powerful music, incredible energy and charm. They have already sold 12,000 tickets for their biggest concert on October 6 in Ljubljana's Arena. Two gigs in Zagreb's Tvornica which will be in November after the one in Belgrade, are already sold out. The list of this year's performances is rapidly growing, so Irish, British, Polish, Spanish and Nordic tours are scheduled. The power of their music can be seen by multi-million listening to their songs on streaming services. The Eurovision hit and generational anthem "Carpe Diem" has more than 15 million listens on Spotify, and was also on the list of "Top 10 Spotify Global Viral Chart".

They started their musical opus in 2016 and developed a musical direction called shagadelic rock 'n' roll. They have released two albums so far - "Umazane Misli" and "Demoni". Their international potential is also being recognized by the global media, therefore BBC highlights their collaboration with Costello, and The Mirror compares them to Harry Styles. The band is currently working on their first album in English, which should be released early next year.

Ticket sales for the Joker Out's first solo concert in Belgrade on November 3 at Dom omladine will begin on Thursday, July 13 at 11 a.m. Tickets at a price of 2,500 dinars can be purchased online and at efinity.rs sales points.
