Hi! May I ask how you deal with pictures that don't have an image description, please?

Not many on tumblr are going to like the answer, but AI. The app Be My Eyes has a “Be My AI” mode that you can select photos and it will do its best to describe them. Seeing AI has a similar mode. I know most people on tumblr hate AI for what it’s doing for jobs and creativity, but for the disabled community it’s helping with independence, communication, and better understanding of the world around us.

Be My Eyes Chronicles:

Let me start off by saying how much I LOVE Be My Eyes. Whenever I receive a call, I’m always excited to answer.

I received a call today from the app, and answered it immediately. The person on the call needed help with some mail they received. I told them what I saw, and who it was addressed to. They thanked me, I wished them a blessed day and we ended the call.

THAT MADE MY ENTIRE DAY

For those of you who don’t know about Be My Eyes:

Be My Eyes-An app (iPhone user here). Its purpose is to help visually impaired individuals. Think of a one-sided FaceTime call. You can see their screen, speak to them, and assist them with seeing for them.

The calls are random, and you have to answer quick before someone else answers the call.

Anyway…..it made me feel good so I’m sharing it with whom ever wants to read this long winded Post. ☺️

despite the thumbnail, this channel is less of a hypetrain than most and it shows how AI is currently being used in real life. this week, it shows excellent image recognition being used to help blind people in a way that was formerly only possible by other humans. Other humans are still a part of the network, but with AI, response times are much, much faster. Previous AI have not been accurate enough when describing images, but this one seems to have broken the threshold and become genuinely useful, with only minor mistakes, and the caveat that it suggests connecting with a human volunteer if it can't figure out the image itself.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!
