Finished! A really excellent book on bear attacks. The author, using chiefly primary sources & personal interviews & experiences, describes a number of bear-related fatalities in great detail before providing insightful analyses on the causes of the confrontations. Later chapters delve into a wealth of practical information on how to identify different bear species, how to spot signs of a bear's presence in the area, & how to minimize the chances of a dangerous encounter in bear country. The author (while prioritizing human life) clearly loves bears & is committed to protecting both bears & people from one another. The book also includes a lot of snippets of the history of human interactions with bears in North America, from Native American views of bears, to the first written English-language mention of a North American bear, to the disastrous bear-feeding shows at Yellowstone in the 1950s. I was hiking with friends in Glacier National Park, on the Hidden Lake trail, and a bear started barreling towards us. I whipped out my phone just in time to capture the bear chasing down some goats for its next meal. We think the goats got away, as they all ran off.
