So my question for you: What is your craziest “truth is stranger than fiction” moment you have experienced in real life

Okay, so I have a couple.

I went to high school with two guys from The Fray, Dave and Ben. In my junior year, I sat next to Ben in English class and we absolutely terrorized our teacher. She'd been hired last minute to replace a teacher that was going to be on maternity leave the whole semester. I had no idea he was a musician at all, let alone that he was in a band. The first time I became aware of The Fray I just pointed to their album cover and was like, "OMG I HAD ENGLISH CLASS WITH HIM"

The second one was way back in the mid-90s when I was still a wee grade school kid. I think I was in 5th or 6th grade? Anyway, one of the pitchers for the high school varsity baseball team came to do something with us in our gym class. We were outside near the where we had a baseball diamond and this pitcher took a baseball and threw it from the outfield right over the center of home plate and broke the wooden backstop. That pitcher ended up being Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies legend Roy Halladay.

I have sadly been a tad neglectful of this little wonderful corner of the internet due in no small part to living in another country for work the past three months.

BUT I HAVE RETURNED. This might seem as if it is a familiar post because I attempted to do Beas nice ask day many moons ago only to genuinely loose all of my spoons in a matter of minutes after posting (for shame). SO TODAY ON THE 1st of APRIL ~ instead of tricks I will be doling out treats in the form of nice questions and I hope all of you do it too!!

So my question for you my dearest rat is What is your craziest “truth is stranger than fiction” moment you have experienced in real life?

I've thought long and hard about this Beas and I've finally come to an answer. By the way, I love the idea of a personal nice ask day. That's really sweet! I'm gonna do it one day if you don't mind me co-opting the idea 💜 when I can think of some real unhinged shit to ask.

Now, to the story.

This is kinda hard without saying people's real names, but for context, my partner has a very specific and uncommon spelling of their last name that apparently (and this is according to multiple people) means there is only a very limited number of people in Australia with that surname.

Rewind 9 years. I'm scrolling Tinder and I match with a person who has (I shit you not) the EXACT SAME FIRST AND LAST NAME as my partner. We get talking. They're nice. We joke about silly things, we get along, we talk about meeting up but it never goes any further (tldr; Tinder was a flop for me). I reckon we spoke on and off for about a month. Lovely person.

ANYWAY. I subsequently re-meet (we had met much earlier in life) my now partner. During the course of our relationship, my partner's mother brings up my partner's SECOND COUSIN, WHO HAS THE EXACT SAME NAME. IT'S THE SAME PERSON FROM TINDER. turns out, my partner's ex also studied with the Tinder match and the Tinder match and my partner are friendly acquaintances. It still is insane to me that this person is the only other person in the country with the exact same name as my partner, and I somehow managed to find them on Tinder completely by accident.

So my question for you: What is something you haven’t shared here (or shared very recently) that is so shocking and surprising nobody would believe it

Aww, thanks for including me in this, Beas! I had a hard time coming up with an answer to this because I don’t know what really constitutes “shocking” (hi, autism brain!). So I’m going to share two things that offline friends tend to find surprising. 🙃

When I was a kid, Famous Amos was a family friend and I spent a lot of time hanging out with his daughter at their house. I called him “Uncle Wally” and they had couch pillows that looked like chocolate chip cookies.

My college chorale performed Duel of the Fates with John Williams and the Boston Pops in 2000. I’m neutral about Star Wars, but this was when folks were hyped about The Phantom Menace / the prequels, so it was pretty exciting.

So my question for you: What is something (fandom or not) that you have stepped back to say “damn I did that” that makes you feel proud

I guess the most immediate thing that comes to mind is that I finished something!

I always used to dink around in whatever I was writing for days weeks months years however long and never worried about it, because no one else was reading it anyway—which I guess brings me to my second answer, that I posted anything at all.

Admittedly, while I’m so fucking proud of it, sometimes it does not feel like a thing I actually did—possibly because it was a six week blackout of my brain having departed the shell of my body until all the words were all out there—but then someone says something nice about it and I go “holy shit I did that.”

hiii this is so cute thank you for the ask and it’s 100% gonna be when my entire fucking patio roof just collapsed randomly because of the rain. where i live the rain isn’t even heavy. i still don’t want to know.

anyway it was definitely a: ‘wow my life is weird as shit’ kinda thing but following closely is the fact that every time a friend comes over for the first time, they break a glass. we literally call it The Curse in my friend group 😭 idk it feels like my life has been pre written sometimes cuz the most sitcom bullshit happens to me

I treat myself to small things often. "Treat yo self," I say to myself as I sit down for a nice dinner (my "nice" is like $25-$30; I'm not talking like Michelin-star or anything) or order takeout after a rough day. "Treat yo self," I say as I press check out on Etsy or Redbubble. Or a new book. Or theater tickets. (They're out of rush tickets but have $79 box seats? Treat yo self! Klena returning to the Rouge again? Treat yo self to his first night back!) Things like that.

So my question for you; what is your grandest accomplishment that makes you feel good, doesn’t actually have to be grand in the big scheme of things but it makes you feel good!

you know what, my grandest accomplishment is this blog, yes it's silly and a mess, but people feel safe coming into my ask box and telling me the most insane things they want to do, and that's beautiful.

everyone needs a judgement free space online to be themselves and i'm glad i can provide that to them.

its like camila saying "i enjoy spending time with you" didnt even register to lilith at first, and then after 5something minutes she's like "wait, what" (tfw someone hits on you and you only realize it a year later)

"you dont have to be happy. like seriously. dont keep smiling at me and be nice, i do not know what to do with that. no, stop, stop it immediately, because one day i'll wake up with the terrible horrible realization that i've fallen in love with you." - lilith probably

then one day mary probably will napalm her with the "wow do you have a crush on her or something with the way you talk about her all the time" and lilith is mortified because that cant be, i should find everything about this little guy unbearable and annoying and YET

camila on the other hand would just ask beatrice once like "do you think lilith hates me? i cant ever tell if she cares for what i say or wants to knock all my teeth out" and beatrice would go "im dont know what exactly she thinks of you, but she offers to help you up after sparring and she also willingly speaks to you for no apparent reason, and she hasnt done that since. forever basically."

and yippee, cam finally feels at home and less alone and surrounded by people she likes and cares for. i sure do hope nothing will happen to them.

I kind of miss the Farrah, Saul and Harvey trio. They did Andreas dirty though.

my only complaint about Andreas was they shouldn't have killed him off in episode 4. He was such a rich minor villain turned rogue whose presence added depth to Saul, Sky, Beatrix, Riven & Dane, hell even Bloom's storylines.

"it's not personal, Sky" and “this sword [you], an unbalanced piece of shit, it's not mine" 

vs. 

"she's like a daughter to me" and committing fairy murder to trade Beatrix's life for Marco's

i can't give you one definitive answer because the truth is that it depends on what i need/desire the most in that moment.

recently (like, yesterday) was skipping class to write my silly little fic and just blast my music loud because i was home alone and no one would tell me to turn it off.

two months ago it was getting one type of food that i could only get in that specific place i was staying at only for a few days (i overindulged and regretted it, but that's another story).

most commonly, it's simply watching a movie or a tv show i like while knitting. i don't tend to buy many things, but when it is buying things nowadays it's rarely things that are superflous and i don't need. like had you asked me years ago i would've told you that it was kpop albums lmao but now... maybe buying fancy yarn? which then turns into something that i wear, so it's not superfluous at all.

So my question for you: what is the thing, a hobby, a book, a song, an activity, that makes you feel most alive, that makes you feel like you are there that this is the human experience

Ohhh such a good question!

Now this is probably coloured by a recent trip to Disneyland, but I would say: riding a rollercoaster. I personally love rollercoasters, and I think they're a brilliant invention too. Adrenaline is a survival instinct and here's a way to make it fun! And they use practically every human skill: physics, maths, architecture, design, art, culture (popular, but nonetheless), mechanics, engineering. For fun!

I know not everyone loves rollercoasters and not everyone can visit a theme park, but it's one of my favourite things ever.
