We all know that Canon Akutagawa has some health problems, right? It is usually agreed upon that the cause for his lung disease is the years he spent living in the slums, right? Well, I often find myself wondering; if the reason for Akutagawa's sickness is really just those hard times during his childhood in the slums—

Then how come Beast Akutagawa doesn't have the same issue?

Not once during the entire story does Beast Akutagawa cough like he does in canon. Not once does he spit blood or get those attacks like he did when fighting Nathaniel. Which is weird, right? Considering he spent much more time in the streets than his canon counterpart.

Almost like maybe there's another reason for it. Maybe Akutagawa's body went through more physical stress than it could endure. Maybe a certain continuous duress weakened him to the point of sickness.

Maybe the streets would have been kinder.

Thoughts on what went wrong with skk in beast

Its nothing crazy, but I feel like soukoku have this thing where they are genuinely good influences on each other when they actually interact. The more you separated them as teens the more likely they were to have a spiral or a depressive episode. Nothing romantic exactly unless you want to see it as such but they both reinforce each other's humanity while being doubtful about their own. And I am trying to figure things out as to how they went in beast for them to end up where they were. Dazai doesn't hate Chuuya in beast, because Dazai never hated Chuuya in general and had the memories of every universe, and even beast verse Dazai from 15 to 16 during which the events of 15 and sb happened most likely had the same feelings towards Chuuya as canon Dazai.

So why did Chuuya hate Dazai so much in beast and if so, why did he snap when Dazai died? I feel like dragons head is extremely important to figure out what happened. In the canon version of Dragons head we see Chuuya forcing Dazai to confront his behaviour and this leads to Dazai snapping out of his spiral and helping Chuuya, earning back his favor. in the beast universe however Dazai causes the events to deviate post stormbringer and pre dragons head.

For starters Dazai doesn't give Chuuya a choice for corruption during dhc in beast (in canon Chuuya did so by his own choice) but injures himself, promising that he won't be able to run off, not that he won't leave Chuuya to die, but that he can't leave at all. Something definitely happened between the events of tduip and dhc that led to Chuuya losing his trust in him but in this event Chuuya realises that Dazai is not above blatantly manipulating him and forcing his hand. And Dazai talks down to Chuuya in front of their subordinate. Note that at this point Chuuya is acting paranoid, he doesn't trust anyone, he doesn't view the PM as his family, he doesn't have faith in Dazai. I think that in the beast universe Dazai deliberately shut Chuuya out thinking he'd make the same bonds with the PM as he did in canon and hate Dazai alone, however because soukoku's influence was vital to keep them from spiralling as teens Chuuya spiralled when Dazai cut him out.

Yes Dazai kept Chuuya close, but he also insisted on ensuring Chuuya despised him. Except Chuuya never hates people, its not something he does in general. And Dazai was still the guy he knew at 15 and 16 even if he seemingly changed overnight going from the guy obsessed with Chuuya during strombringer to whatever cold calculating man beast Dazai was to him and so he snapped. Perhaps he lost the one person who's presence was keeping him tethered to his sanity and when he lost the person he "hated" he lost his footing completely.

If your farewell to that person is very painful, there is nothing more to say.” The fact that it’s Dazai of all people saying this strikes me. Dazai is someone characterized by the fact that he does not see the value in living life. He does not find anything in the world to be worth living for. He’s tried to commit suicide time and time again because, to him, life simply offers nothing substantial enough to justify the experience of living it.

And yet. By saying those words, he implicitly tells Oda that his life was a good one. Not just passable, not just alright, not just tolerable, but good. His life was a good one because Oda is the person that he has to say goodbye to, because saying goodbye to Oda like this is very painful to him. Even though, in this universe, Oda hates him, even though Oda considers him an enemy, even though Oda says he has no right to call him ‘Odasaku’ - Dazai still says his life was a good one, simply because Oda existed in it.

Thinking about this has me crying—

So, in Beast, Akutagawa grew up in the streets, right? Realistically, how literate would he even be? In the manga, his report was really simple, and he did talk to Astsushi about getting paper and books, but suppose that he couldn't read.

I imagine him learning that Kunikida is a teacher, and although he was a math teacher, Akutagawa goes to him and asks if he could teach Akutagawa to read properly, fully complete and complicated sentences.

Obviously, Kunikida thinks it's a great idea and will help, but seeing how focused Akutagawa is about it, he asks, "What brought this on?"

And Akutagawa is quiet for a moment, before he looks down, saying softly, "Oda-san is writing a book."

No, not on a romantic level; you aren't in love with him. Or that's what you like to think, hope. Maybe a little crush? Yeah, that must be it. Then again, you always hoped your father would bring you alongside him each Saturday ever since you were 11 years old and couldn't stay alone at home.

Your mother works from early in the morning to late in the evening, which means if your father didn't bring you with him to work, you would stay at home alone throughout the whole day.

But now you aren't a kid anymore; you can stay by yourself. You don't want to, though; you always go with your father to work, even though at first he preferred you to stay home.

"I always brought you with the terror of something happening to you. Now that you are older and can stay by yourself, you don't want to?"

At the end you convinced him, but it cost you a lot of pleading. He even tried to understand why, but you can't tell him it's because of your undying interest, maybe even obsession towards his boss.

Every Saturday, you find yourself in your dad's office, sneaking glances at the bookshelf full of notebooks, folders, books, and boxes. Sometimes you stay on your phone, hoping every second for your father to stop working on the files or computer and say something like, "I have to go see the boss, please stay here."

It's something you would never do. You act like the same child you were five years ago, just older.

You have seen the boss not many times... to be honest, you probably only saw him once, but it wasn't on purpose. Your father ordered you sternly to stay inside the office and wait for him to be back but you didn't listen to him, which made you see the most gorgeous creature your childlike eyes could ever see.

Since then, you never forgot him.

He was there, sitting with his hands under his chin, dark eyes not sparing even a glance at you as he analyzed whatever your father was blathering about with an incredibly focused, unblinking gaze.

But you, oh, you found him so interesting.

His behavior, his face, everything about him was so captivating that you never stopped thinking about him, not once.

Especially his voice; how could a voice so honeyed be so cruel, how could such a lullaby be so brutal? You remember your father trembling under his gaze, acting like he had done something wrong and waiting for some kind of punishment to come his way.

You didn't really understand at that time, and now that you are older, you don't remember their conversation; you aren't even sure if you listened to it, too focused on the way his voice was so soft it could put you to sleep, lulled by the sweetness of his tone.

It's normal for a child to develop crushes on older people, you know this, but is it normal for it to last so long, dragging on until your early 17 years old? Five years have passed, so why haven't you gotten over him yet?

You've never felt more ashamed in your life than you do right now.

Your own trail of thoughts is silenced by a harsh sound as your father smacks the papers on top of his desk, almost suddenly getting up from his seat.

Your eyes snap towards him, slightly wide as you didn't expect such a move coming from him; he's always fairly composed, so it's logical for you to react this way.

"I have to go see the boss. Yn, for the love of the clouds, stay here." he says, flashing you a hard look as if he wants to pin you down where you are standing.

Your response is a guilty smirk.

You will never stay put.
