Shipping definition poll
Asking because I've noticed people use it in different ways, and I suspect a lot of confusion and disagreement happens in fandom because we need more words to discuss what we mean, instead of lumping it all under the single word "Ship".
-
*For "want to explore an aspect of the ship's dynamic", this means exploring the characters together romantically or sexually, without any implication of seeing it as healthy or wanting the characters to get together / be in love long term, and without any implication either way of wanting it to be canon. Wide umbrella that includes wanting them to be together and in love through to thinking they are toxic or wanting to see one hurt the other for id-fic and darkfic type purposes.

AKASHI AND MIDORIMA SLEEPOVER (kuroko is there somewhere, somehow)
Akashi: Shintarou, I'm your bestfriend, right?
Kuroko: *starts recording this convo*
Midorima: Well, no, Takao is.
Akashi: You can't have your boyfriend as your bestfriend. And we're childhood bestfriends!
Midorima: He's not my boyfriend, he's my bestfriend. We're always together now.
Akashi: Fine, but if he breaks up with you, who are you gonna cry to?
Midorima: First, we're not going to break up because he's not my boyfriend, second, if we were, we would never break up.
Akashi: But to whom are you going to cry, though.
Midorima:...
Midorima: To you...
Akashi: See, I'm your bestfriend.
*BONUS*
Midorima: If you ever break up with Furihata Kouki, would you cry to me?
Akashi: No, because I would rather use that time to get him back.
Midorima: No that's...
Akashi: It's winners' mentality, Shintarou.

And what especially sucks is that Viv says she's fine with people shipping Alastor with other people. Like...
Why do people treat AroAce people do different???
Like, when I got into my first and last relationship {before I realized I was aromantic}, my family would make jokes of me and the person not being allowed in the same room with the door closed, make kissing jokes {even though I would literally try to flee from CHEEK KISSES} and so many things
And like. I can't help but project onto AroAce characters????
Also, a bit unrelated because my brain is all over the place, but I saw a comment on TikTok that was like "in the episode, Alastor used the AroAce version of 'your daughter calls me daddy too'" and then I scrolled and the rest of the comments were people fighting
Like
If you wanna ship Alastor with someone... QUEER PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS EXIST- {I think that's the right term????? Idk I just woke up again.} Like. None of the romance. None of the sex. Just two people that are in a platonic relationship. {But then there would be people that see it and then go "oh they're just besties! Time to ship the AroAce character with people"}
{also I saw like this argument somewhere on this app between two people over queer platonic relationships, one person saying they're not real and the other person pointing out that they are and stuff.}
Anyway, I've never understood why people just. Keep shipping AroAce characters with people. It's like they took the words of AroAce people {the "some of us can still date and sex" words when someone goes "uhm you can't be AroAce because [insert sex or relationship]"} because it's like. They're using things that would be like "we're also AroAce" just to EXCLUDE SEX AND ROMANCE REPULSED AROACE PEOPLE FROM EXISTING IN FICTION
Like. It just. Never makes sense to me. People talk about erasing identities of other queer characters but the moment that they're AroAce they begin going "oh it's fine" like. What's the different between shipping an AroAce character with someone and shipping a gay character with the opposite gender????
Hold on my brain just tried to go to a different topic with genders {specifically "if heterosexual is 'attraction to the opposite gender' would that make agenders only attracted to Omnigender/Pangender?" And I have no idea why. Probably because I JSUT woke up from a nap}
Back to the rant, it just... Why can't AroAce characters in media exist in peace??? It's like people see canonical AroAce characters and make it a CHALLENGE to ship them with as many people as possible.
YES!
say it with me now:
Aroace people are a part of the community and deserve equal representation in media too!
aroace people should not be excluded or have their representation have leeway and wiggle room to fit the conformities of society
aroace people deserve to be seen!

The tanaoi stans believe a fancanon that "Aoi has a crush on Tanjiro and give up because of Kanao" when that shit did not happen in both manga and novels. I really hate TikTok for spreading this fake info and now they are hating on Kanao just to ship tanaoi. I'm sorry that Kanao was picked by Tanjiro and Aoi was not? And Aoi did not give up shit for Kanao in canon lmao. She loves Kanao as a sister yes as stated in the novels but she show her love for Kanao by understanding how Kanao's mentality work instead of being controlled by her low self-esteem and Kanao show love to Aoi by comforting her while she's having a breakdown realization in the novel.
None of their relationship revolves around Tanjiro because that shit was a headcanon and not canon and I hate that their sisterly bond is being lowered to ships.
If Tanjiro and Kanao had barely interactions in canon then Tanjiro and Aoi have even less interaction. Have we even read the same manga and novel or this is another ya'll fancanons? If we are gonna play about conon moments between ships, Kanao has always Tanjiro's attention and notice her ever since until the end wether it's because of her skill or eccentric behavior. Tanjiro always approach Kanao first and vice versa. He approach and blush while thinking fondly that she's 'sweet' at the closing end of the manga hinting their growing romance because Tanjiro's goal is already achieve so he has now time to be young. Aoi is barely noticed by Tanjiro but acknowledge her hardwork say nice things about her just like any other people at the mansion and Tanjiro never tried to approach Aoi since then and barely interacted with her than he was with Kanao. The thing is, it's also Tanjiro who understands Kanao's anger at Inosuke in the novel and made Inosuke understand why she feel that way causing for Inosuke and Kanao to reconcile immidiately.
The funny thing is, Aoi has more interactions with Genya in the novel than with Tanjiro and Inosuke in both manga and novel. Genya was the one who defend Aoi when a slayer insulted Aoi and Sumi for being non slayers and not in the frontlines and Aoi took care of Genya the whole time even though Genya was shy and tried to push her away. And no, I don't ship Genya and Aoi. I ship Genya and Muichiro. I'm just pointing it out.
Ship tanaoi all you want but leave Kanao alone.
Calling Kanao a 'pick me'. You learn a phrase and run with it.
If we are going to call Kanao pick me because she's silent and has tragic past, shoul we call Giyu or any other male characters who are quiet and has a tragic past a pick me too?
I don't usually go to war for ships but they are shitting on Kanao and get into tankana space? Like stay on your lanes.

For some reason it's now fanon that Jevil and Spamton are exes and that bothers me on another level 💀
I think it's because Spamton quoted the hotdog divorce shitpost meme during the Spam Sweep Q&A (though that doesn't strike me as hard/definitive proof of anything between them).
But I understand; I've never really been a huge fan of that ship myself, particularly because Spamton himself has always expressed pretty clear and explicit hatred/disgust towards Jevil (or clowns in general, but Jevil seems to be the source of it).
I'd probably be fine with the idea of them being exes/divorced, if not for the tendency of some people claiming that to depict them as still having lingering feelings for one another, or there's a potential (or even desire from one or both parties) for them to get back together (like they're not really irreconcilable to the point of no return), or like they never had a big fight (or several) that would've led up to a particularly nasty breakup, when that's really not how divorce works.
Even if there was an attraction between them at some point, that doesn't mean they feel that way now (and from what I can tell, they don't).

Sam as Cap and Joaquin as Falcon: a pitch
So a fic idea I had playing around in my head (except that I'm not a writer lol help), or something I'd just like to see in a new Cap movie would be a full arc between Sam and Joaquin involving training with the Falcon wings.
This got longer than expected, but here's a general breakdown...
---
Set during Cap4-ish
An Act 1 early scene showing Sam training Joaquin with the wings, Joaquin is doing pretty well but is also a bit young and cocky so he's taking unnecessary risks before he's ready.
Sam's clearly anxious about having a wingman, because if anything were to happen then Sam would feel responsible because Sam literally put Joaquin in the air.
Then later, Act 2, maybe it's a small op, Joaquin's first time on a mission with the wings, Joaquin makes a really reckless call. Like, full nose dive, low altitude, too fast, Sam's shouting to pull up over the comms and Joaquin is all "I can do this though!"
It's a close call, he only just manages to get out of it with a split second.
But as soon as they're both on the ground Sam goes OFF! Like full "Do you have any idea how stupid that was?! You disobeyed a direct order! No - that's it - you're grounded." and storms off. Classic Act 2 emotional conflict. We've never seen Sam lose it before like this.
*(note: grounded like Air force 'you're not allowed to fly again until I say', not like grounding a teenager 😅)
Anyway, a scene later someone takes Joaquin aside - maybe Bucky, maybe Rhodey (I like this option more since they're all air force and perhaps has spoken to Sam about his history after his own fall in CW, and I loved their convo in FatWS), or it could be Sam himself once he's cooled off a bit - and just explains to Joaquin why it so important to Sam that he not dive in too fast before he's ready, not to take those risks because it would kill Sam if anything happened to him.
Cue obvious Riley reference, because we need to bring back Sam's backstory god dammit! He hasn't been mentioned since CAWS!
Then have Sam explain that's it's not just about Riley, that sometimes missions go wrong and sometimes you lose and you have to accept that, but sometimes the risk can be avoided.
That Sam's seen soldiers taking risks too extreme because they were young and dumb and thought that they were invincible.
That he's seen pilots go down with their planes, who wouldn't eject, trying to fix a problem they couldn't right until the moment they hit the ground.
That he knows how intoxicating the wings can be. The rush, the speed, the adrenaline, the freedom you feel in the air. (After all, Sam's dodged missiles, kicked a helicopter mid air, and stabbed a giant alien with his wings, and jumps backwards out of planes just to feel the air...he *gets it*.) But the qualities that make Sam, and Joaquin, great in the wings are the same qualities that if they don't keep their heads on straight, will lead them off the edge.
Joaquin apologises, understands and accepts that he's grounded for the moment and is back to being the intelligence guy (he's an intel officer isn't he?)
ACT 3!
I have no idea what the actual plot of this film/fic scenario is but whatever.... plot happens. Final show down is happening. Sam and team (team like how Steve had a 'team' taking down Shield in DC, not Avengers per se) need back up, oh no!
And Joaquin, knowing he'd be disobeying Sam again, but knowing this is the right call to make grabs his Falcon wings and joins the fray.
Somehow (again...I'm not a writer 😭), the fight continues and Joaquin ends up needing to pull a pretty reckless move and not much time to think about consequences. Maybe he's diving to save Sam! Or maybe he's doing something that is pivotal to saving the day. (But Sam still does the Big Thing that saves the day because this is still a Cap movie/story 😁😘)
The day is saved! Hugs all around!
Sam learns to ease off a bit, let go of his fear of losing another friend (as much as he can), affirms that Joaquin has good instincts and that he trusts the kid as his wingman (he's a 'bizarrely wise man' after all). He's the Falcon now. Every Captain America needs a Falcon. 😉 🤍❤💙
The end. Hopefully a city hasn't been destroyed.
---
Thoughts?
Basically, I want a Cap story to really dig in to Sam and show him as a leader and a mentor but also that he's not 100% okay all the time. That he has fears and insecurities that aren't based on his own role (fuck off 'earning the shield' ugh), but that as the Captain who's making the calls now, people that are inspired by him or who follow him are his responsibility (in his mind). Being reckless with your own life is one thing, enabling someone else to risk their own is another. You know, heavy is the head that wears the crown.... heavy is the heart that bears the shield...??
I want lots of character moments and not just 'we gotta stop the Big Bad Dude' plot stuff.
If anyone has any recommendations of general fics like this I'd love to read them. Or if this inspires any fics I would absolutely love to read them also. 🥰
