 i've been thinking about Them recently a lot too, esp with artfight going on! this is going under a cut because it WILL be super long and that is a THREAT

surprisingly these all ended up being pre-canon hcs which were NICE because everything kinda just clicked into place

she + her siblings  are all named after Famous* Edain from the first age, and she feels a special sense of kinship to her sister andreth since they were both technically named after the same woman!

*famous is relative of course, since none of them are straight up named turin or beren etc., but all of them are named after edain that existed! and did things!

as a kid sae LOVES swans, and this earns her the nickname cygnet [i think the sindarin translation would be 'alpheg' but i'm not 100% on it]

she also loves swimming and being on her grandparent’s boat the Aduninzil [they’re shipbuilders, and the aduninzil is really more a sloop than anything, it’s p. small]

she isn’t happy about moving to minas tirith at the age of six, even if there are frequent visits to dol amroth anyway. but she adjusts to city life well enough. 

one day at the age of 8, she is involved in a pretty intense game of hide & seek on the fifth circle, and she ends up wandering into the complex that housed the halls of lore, bar vorn & bar menel -- an infinite array of hiding spaces!

she is mild mannered & quiet enough [for a newly turned 8 year old at least] that the scholars don’t necessarily mind her wandering around, as long as she doesn’t touch things without asking or break anything

she ends up spending most of the day there, enchanted by the knowledge that lay at her fingertips. 

when she leaves the houses, she’s greeted by upset-and-distraught-in-equal measure siblings (andreth, adanel & enerdhil) and is returned home to even more upset-and-distraught parents who were looking for her in the lower circles, tho they’re mostly just glad that she’s ok.

anyway! this mild detour to say; she definitely becomes a regular fixture at the houses of lore while she's still going through her own education, to the point where she's nicknamed 'golodheg' [thank you again isi!!] which means 'little sage/scholar'

[i don't think this will end up being canon for her but i think it would be freaking HILARIOUS if she ran into faramir returning books or smthn a handful of times [like no more than 4] and she's just *star-struck noises* and faramir is internally like "why tf is there a Child in here"]

during this time [from age 7-12], her father teaches her & her siblings how to use a sword, and she takes to it well enough upon realizing the footwork is almost like dancing

one day [at age 9], she finds a copy of the narn e-dinuviel [tale of the nightingale aka beren and luthien]. she's allowed to read it, and she spends a solid week working through the archaic wording with patience she'd never particularly had for anything else.

[luthien reminds her of her mom -- always dancing, warm and kind, with hidden strength -- and beren reminds her of her dad -- brave, undaunted and gentle -- though she never puts the pieces together until WELL after the fact]

when it comes time for her to make her first copy, there is no hesitation and she chooses b&l.

(in my own hc one of the major projects/milestones in a child's school life is copying a book of their own choice, which is a very long, structured process. and the finished product is referred to as a 'first copy'

by the time she is eleven, she has finished the first copy and chooses to move on to her second copy, which is the fall of gondolin & rise of the star [or ‘Narn e-Dant Gondolin ar Orthad en El’, according to tolkien gateway] in its more archaic [in human terms at least] sindarin instead of westron like b&l was

by the time she finishes the fall of gondolin, sauron’s shadow is getting really heavy, and her parents make the decision to send her + adanel to bree on the grounds that maeril [caladil’s [sae’s mom] sister] is expecting a Baby soon and will Need Help

and while that is technically true, the real reason is to keep sae & adanel safe

sae... in bree doesn’t outright do extremely poorly but she’s very concious of the fact that while the breefolk are nice & friendly, she & adanel & other gondorians are Outsiders to them

[i have a lil hc that w/ all the refugees coming up from the south, there ends up being a ‘little gondor’ section somewhere in bree]

and so sae copes with this by creating this Image of what a Perfect Gondorian should look like, and is constantly striving to meet this insanely lofty goal. and uh spoiler; she never quite does

she enlists in the breeland jrotc  junior militia as soon as she is able, along with working in the scholar’s stair to help archive things

eventually at 18, she ranks up to be a captain, and maeril’s oldest & her husband  are expecting a baby themselves now but sae REALLY wants to go home and the sooner the better

so she and adanel + her aunt & uncle compromise: sae knows enough to take care of herself so she could go ahead and get started down the greenway, and adanel would be behind her as quickly as possible

and then sae meets up with some brigands and uh :) we all know how things go from there

I think my favorite little parallel between Ascended vs Spawn Astarion has to be this little, probably even unintentional, detail in the epilogue:

Mr Vampire Ascendant, when confronted about freedom, asking the pc if they'd prefer sleeping in the dirt over "living" in his prescribed decadence.

Meanwhile, if left as a spawn Astarion is like

You know, I don't necessarily buy into the idea of "you die twice; once when your heart stops beating, and the second when you are forgotten" because I don't think we're truly forgotten.

Throughout history, we've found proof of people existing, well after their death, well after they've been forgotten by their community and time. Even if we do not have names for these people, we know they were alive. We touch their bones, and we internalize their lives. We learn how they lived through the stories we interpret from their bones, and then we tell others about them. They haven't been forgotten, and it's not unlikely that you won't be forgotten.

Why is it that we only "count" if we are immortalized in the history books, if we scar time to the point nothing would be the same if we were forgotten?

Im about to get controversial.

Out of chrollo, illumi and hisoka, hisoka is canonically the least likely to flirt to get anything he wants, if at all.

A lot of people think he's a natural flirt but I fear I couldn't have disagreed more. He only "flirted" a single time and that was solely to piss off machi, knowing she'd never agree. Hot take? He would've never asked if he knew she'd agree.

Also, bro's the biggest humanphobe in the anime. He keeps his distance from everyone. The only human physical contact he ever made was through fighting people. (If you're a person thats interested in seeing more evidence, I have an entire long thread about it on twitter that I do plan on posting here soon)

so u cannot give me 1 reason for hisoka to flirt with someone at a random bar but chrollo and illumi? i can think of a few.

chrollo, he already canonically flirts to get what he wants. straight up goes on dates gets a suit and shit. he has no reputation among the general public that hes concerned of that isnt the spider. Illumi? He's a manipulator. I HIGHLY doubt he never flirted to get something in his life from people who are too easy to win over. He's someone that wouldn't care what people think of him. He's also anonymous. People have no idea who tf he is anyways. If it affected the zoldyck reputation? Thats a different story.

Hisoka? he would fucking NEVER. Him specifically? HE HAS A REPUTATION. And whats that reputation? That hes an absolute disgusting freak that no one should dare to approach. He kills people. He fights live and makes sure the audience is always disgusted and weirded out by his actions and performances. You look at him and you should immediately look away and pray he hasn't seen you.

So riddle me this. If his entire shtick is making sure everyones afraid of him and avoids him, then why the hell would he get himself a reputation that makes him approachable????

Why would he get himself a reputation that makes you, as a person who only ever heard of him picking people up, want to approach him.

On top of that, I just.. don't see him picking random people up..??? random weaklings that dont even know nen????? he literally treats them like trash that inconveniences his time. You're saying he'd EVER give them the privilege of sleeping with him???

And then you'd say, oh so he'd sleep with strong people! HERES THE THING. Why would he sleep with them..... when he can fight them. Him getting off from fighting comes NOWHERE to actual sex. What people don't understand is that he gets off to killing people and seeing them crumble in front of him when they realize theyre going to die. Torturing people to death. this turned into a huge rant probably but do you know how genuinely depressing it is seeing a unique character like hisoka that gains lust through FIGHTING and KILLING reduced to. sex addict in fics. Like. be so fucking serious right now. He called himself a FIGHT ADDICT in the manga. Can I see more of him actually spending his time killing and fighting people instead of whatever the hell bros doing with a random npc.

He crumples like wet tissue, slumping onto Maddie who somehow manages to keep him upright. “Oh, Evan,” she says, holding on so tight. “Oh, honey, we’ll figure it out. We’re all going to be right here for you. You aren’t alone.” Isn’t he? Hasn’t he been left alone? How is he ever going to know where his shoulder is supposed to be without Eddie’s there to bump against? “And- and he could still be out there, maybe they’ll-“

”No.” the word is choked and violent, and his body tears itself back a step. “Maddie, stop.” He’s shaking his head, maybe. “He’s- I can’t think that. If he’s- if he’s-“ how did the ocean find him here? Why is he underwater? “I can’t do anything about it. It means I-I- I gave up, I left him-“ if Eddie is, somehow, still alive out on the open ocean he won’t be for long, and the thought of finding out later that something could have been done if only, if only- it floods his mouth with bile, makes his words come out sharp. “He has to be dead. I can’t- I can’t hope, Maddie, it will kill me.”

“Buck…”

She looks sort of horrified. Buck isn’t sure about which part, but he can’t spare any thought to figure it out because- “Eddie’s dead. E-Eddie’s dead. He’s dead, he- I can’t do this, I can’t- I can’t fucking look at anyone, I don’t want-“ huh, he can’t really see. “I don’t want to- to talk to anyone, I can’t- they’re going to bring casseroles a-and I’m going to have to answer the door and say thank you and we’ll- we’ll- there’ll be too much food in the fridge because that’s what happens when people die and I- I can’t- I can’t do this- I can’t do this-”

Very faintly, he is aware of hands on his body, moving him, sitting down. He wishes desperately for a moment that it had been him that died, but then thinks about Eddie still alive and feeling all this. He’s still a stoic man, all that therapy and effort to share what he’s feeling aside, and he thinks no one might realize right away how bad he was hurting if Buck wasn’t there to see it. At least Buck does this, explodes all over hospital waiting rooms or Bobby’s house or Maddie’s, and everyone can see the gooey pieces of him melting into the cracks and staining the carpet. Somebody’s got a shop vacuum somewhere probably, labeled with his name and in case of emergency.
