The Umbrella Academy ideas that are stuck in my head (part 2): Training

A fanfic idea where Klaus was involved in his siblings trainings cause Reginald saw he wasn't making enough progress in is own and "You must contribute somehow Number Four". But no one knew what each others individual training involved cause they hated taking about it. But one day after the not-apocalypse or whatever the conversation gets brought up and one of them mentions that Klaus was involved in the their trainings and they all are like....wait he was in mine too. And Klaus is like "yeah, I always preferred your trainings over mine" Then they ask Klaus what his training was and if anyone else was involved but he doesn't want to tell them about the mausoleum or how he later found out that Reginald used to kill him/let him die and time how long it took him to come back.

Luther (I'm not really sure how to include Klaus in training for him yet)

Diego's training included having him throw knives and things at various targets until his hands ached. Then Reginald wanting him to practice curving the projectiles so he made Klaus stand in front of a target (cause he knew Diego had a "weakness" for Klaus and also that Klaus couldn't die, not that he told anyone that) and made Diego throw knives at him. Later upgraded to Reginald throwing the knives and making Diego try to stop or repeal them. And he messed up sometimes and got so upset at hurting Klaus but Klaus is just like "Don't worry Di I trust you not to hurt me on purpose" and "It's okay Di, it's just a scratch". And Klaus just got used to the pain and build up a high pain tolerance.

Allison's training included rumoring over and over until her throat hurt. But she needed to rumor someone for Reginald to see the effects and how different wording and even languages changed the results. So Klaus got picked cause he was the best at/knew the most languages so he could understand (maybe because of the ghosts). And Allison kinda hated doing it to him but was afraid of Reginald and wanted to prove herself so she just made Klaus do a bunch of things. And Klaus got used to the idea and feeling of his body and mind not really being his own and kinda just dissociated after a while.

Five's training included practicing jumping until he felt like passing out. Then one day Reginald wanted him to practice with another person and chose Klaus. And Klaus got so dizzy and sick the first time he threw up so Reginald forbade him from eating on Five's training days cause "I will not stand you making a mess Number Four". Klaus didn't tell anyone and when asked why he doesn't eat sometimes he just said he wasn't hungry. Later Klaus thinks back on this when he is living on the streets and is already familiar with the feeling of hunger.

Ben's training didn't involve Klaus because it was too dangerous even for Reginald. But Klaus was always there when Ben was finished. And he would drag him to the bathroom and clean him up and then they would cuddle under blankets together in Ben's bed and Klaus would talk about anything and everything just to distract Ben from thinking too much about the Horror. And sometimes Ben hated when his stomach was touched cause it hurt or he was afraid that the Horror would just react without his control but other times when they would cuddle, Klaus would lay his hand or even his head again Ben's stomach and for a moment Ben knew how much Klaus trusted him and how much faith he had in him and in that moment it made Ben feel safe and in control.

Viktor obviously didn't have training like the others but he remembers when he would learn a new song and finally be able to play it through without messing up and wanting to show Reginald or his siblings but was afraid they wouldn't care. But Klaus would come into his room sometimes and listen to him play and he would sit on his bed and fall asleep. Viktor admits that at the time he thought Klaus was just bored and it hurt that he never listened to the whole song. But present Klaus says that he wasn't bored but that Viktor's room never had any ghost (unlike his other siblings who became murderers/haunted way to young) and his music was so beautiful and peaceful. That Viktor's room was safe, that Viktor was safe. And feeling safe was something Klaus rarely felt as a kid but in those moments with Viktor he was able to relax and actually sleep.

Anyway I just want a hurt/comfort fic with Klaus and his siblings.

(Most are five-centric. Gee I wonder who my favorite character is)

Also some quick notes about these:

As I said before, these are basically five centric. I do however read a lot of other stuff for other characters that I’m willing to share, so ask and ye shall receive!!! That being said, I don’t read a lot of oc fics and character x reader, so I don’t have a lot of recommendations for that.

Many of these fics were written before season three, before Viktor’s transition, which means that his deadname will be used. If you don’t want to read it, that’s totally okay, but just a forewarning!!!

Most of these fics have some dark and mature themes. And it may not seem like a serious thing, but sometimes you need to take a break from that kind of thing. This goes for any piece of media really that deals with these kinds of things. It doesn’t make you less of a person for taking care of yourself. There is no pressure to finish any of these or to even click on it. So if you read the tags (which you always should), and you think it’s not something that would be good for your mental health, don’t be afraid to tap out.

Oh and some of These have word counts but I got tired so I only did some. So pretty much All of these are multi chapter fics

Ashes and Dust by Devilbaby | I honestly can’t say too much because there is so much wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff that I don’t want to give away but it’s really well done. It’s in a series called the chronos saga and I would totally recommend the whole series but the third (and final) part is incomplete

The Secret inside of you (run boy run) by Utukki | Reginald knows what Five is capable of. And he can never let him reach that potential. So he outs in a little safety measure. Incomplete

But for now it’s time to run by Ford_Ye_Fiji | ever wondered what would happens if The Doctor and number five from umbrella academy met? Boom. Here’s the fic. There’s also some plot and a whole series too, called run, boy, run, (the umbrella effect)

So be it by bobee | a series of unfortunate events, starring five. lots of hurt, but it is incomplete so there’s not a lot of comfort yet

Howling at the moon by assaily | five gets sent to Hotel Oblivion, and has to confront his inner demons. This is a great fic for those who were kind of disappointed by the hotel oblivion storyline (like myself) but it is incomplete

Intelligent conversation by Soulykins | five has a habit of talking to himself. Might have something to do with, gee I dunno 45 years in the apocalypse. This is the first in a series called old dog, old tricks and the whole series is really good if you want five angst and sibling bonding.

This is a gift, it comes with a price by rebel_by_default | set in season two, where time travel has even more consequences than in canon oh also this is a series called a beast of a burden

Monster that I despise by pinetreedeath | comic book elements, which I feel like is just code for serial killer DNA at this point (oh yeah that’s basically what it’s about). Really cool how the author writes it, however, incomplete

TUA one shots I write at 3am by pinetreedeath | they have different plots for each one but each one is incredible. You’ve got feral five, you’ve got soft five. Any five you want just pick a chapter and you’ll have it (jeez I feel like a salesman or something) also incomplete

Dealing with doppelgängers by I_Logophile | we’ve all made our assumptions about five if he didn’t get adopted by Reginald and lived a relatively normal life. Well this author wrote about it!! A round of applause. also WHUMP

Then I wrote all of this down and it mysteriously disappeared so I had to make a whole new list, which was very frustrating. But this was also fun so if you have any new requests, lmk!!!

The Other Ones by @michals | A magnificent AU wherein Hargreeves does indeed buy the weird kids who confronted him in 1963—but they are kept out of sight and afforded none of the privileges the Sparrows have. They are not superheroes, they are not Hargreeves children, they are barely even children at all.  They are only there as experiments, and so Hargreeves can keep an eye on them.  Yet, there is only so much even Hargreeves can plan for, and the Other Ones have a loyalty to one another only made stronger in adversity.

Broken Clocks and Lost & Found by Gin_Juice | A two-part series by the masterful Gin_Juice, whose grasp of these characters’ voices is unsurpassed.  The Umbrellas try to find a way back to a timeline they actually feel they can belong to, only to learn their arrival has already set something in motion they really would rather avoid.

Medium by @salvador-daley | Klaus discovers that his alternate self is rich, famous, and living a life he could only dream of. However, seeking this odd fellow out in person wasn’t his best idea, and ghosts tell a lot of secrets.

Firestarter by @melivian | A character study of Ben and Klaus pre-canon. I don’t have enough superlatives.

Abort, Retry by Shadowscast | Five resorts to the use of rewinding time to prevent his siblings from getting sad.  Anyone who has seen Inside Out knows how well that works out.

(…) We step onto the sidewalk and walk towards the entrance to the police station in the sunshine, Klaus's nonchalance only equalled by our invisible hilarity in his wake. He passes through the glass doors, then the wooden ones, into the austere, checkered-tiled corridor. He scans the premises, turns into the adjoining corridor where the reception counter is located… then says to the cop standing there, busy rummaging through his little lunch bag:

"Hello…" He glances at his name tag, his voice all honey. "… Brigadier Harris."

The guy seems more interested in the prospect of his sandwich than in him, but stares at his blue-and-orange striped shirt, unable to contextualize him. It has to be said that from yesterday's cult leader to today's simple beatnik, there's practically a world of difference, including in terms of haircut.

"I stayed in your comfortable facilities a short while ago," he tells him, "and I wanted to know if ~by chance~ you'd found my… my wedding ring. I seem to have lost it somewhere in here".

Klaus shows his ringless 'Goodbye' hand, and I nearly choke on a silent laugh. Brigadier Harris rummages around the counter in a drawer, then - finding nothing - says to him:

"I'll make a call downstairs and ask if they've found anything. You can have a seat in the waiting area." "You're an angel," Klaus replies with a smile, certainly too broad for the scenario he's interpreting. Then he turns on his heel and heads back down the corridor through which we arrived, settling into the available green armchairs as if he were at the beach.

The Brigadier's phone call only takes a minute, then he hangs up and returns to his eggs and mayonnaise sandwich, which he unwraps and places prominently on the counter in front of him. Clearly, it takes very little to brighten up his low-level police employee's day: he won't be disappointed. Ben doesn't see me, but I briefly make the neon lights on the ceiling flicker to let him know that I'm on track, and - safely hidden in my intangibility and invisibility - I step through the glass doors facing the counter. I give an inaudible laugh and make my way down the few steps to the cells aisle. I leave Ben to his own mischief: I know he'll be brilliant.

Comments: Despite the summary, this is 100% a Ben fic. Both Bens. Because what sucks worse than body dysphoria is realizing that sometimes, you're not even you. Sorry Viktor, you're possessed by what's left of your brother but he'd really rare possess his alternate self if that means anything? i'm walking backward into my own myth by eluvion  Five is in 1963. He’s in 2019. He’s in 2002. Time is falling apart, and Five is in every piece. Five is a disease, and time is coughing up a lung.

Or; Five Hargreeves breaks time.

Why else is Five at a crime scene? Why else is he attacking the people trying to help him? Why else is he going around ranting about time?

So, naturally, Klaus and Diego join him. "Holy shit, Five," Diego says, rushing forward. "What the hell happened to you?" Five is off-balanced by the sight of Diego. Shouldn’t he be at the other address? What is he doing here? Klaus appears on the other side of Diego and lets out a laugh that sounds almost frantic. "Oh, thank God you can see him, too.” “Why are you here?” Five says. Diego scoffs. “Yeah, no, the one covered in blood doesn’t get to ask questions.”

The Longest Roads Lead to Home by assaily (twistedskys) Five raised his glass to the rafters. “I’m home,” he said simply. “I’d like to take the time to enjoy that, y’know.”

Diego watched him pour another drink, suddenly understanding him. He’d been gone a long time, lost in a really terrible place that probably never felt like home unless he could somehow forget he was the last soul on Earth. ‘Home’ meant a lot to him.

When Five’s glass was ready again, Diego raised his own, still half-full. “To being home,” he said.

That earned him a smile, a real one that managed to soothe the crease in Five’s brow and make him look so incredibly young in its sincerity, and so incredibly old in its deep gratitude. He raised his glass and clinked it against Diego’s. “To finally being home.”

and all the kids cried out by morimaru The one where Five is sick, the Handler is clingy and hard to get rid of even after death, and Klaus has a ghost-busting side-gig that is a lot less exciting than it sounds.

Guilt Trip by I_Logophile In typical Five Hargreeves fashion, a drug ring bust with his family turns into a rescue mission, which turns into a complete and utter shitshow. Because, of course, things had to go sideways— No, scratch that. Things didn't just go sideways, things went upside down, backward, and inside out. And then got blown up. Literally.

In the aftermath of the whole fiasco, Five is left reeling, floundering, drowning in guilt.

Because how could he have done that?

How could he have attacked his family?

spoiled by morimaru Number Five is a survivor. He fought his whole life: he fought their father, the apocalypse, the commission, then – the apocalypse, again. Having made that fateful jump back to 2019, he unwillingly left his old body with all of its scars behind. Physical ones, at least. It’s funny, in a way, that the hardest thing for him to fight ends up being food.

The Dangers of Vigilanteing by aceofwhump Diego gets injured during one of his vigilante acts and is forced to go back to the one place he swore he'd never return: The Umbrella Academy

The interviewer disregards the Reginald-approved questions to probe Klaus on whether he has a drug and sex addiction. The tone of the interview is very slut shaming and cruel. Klaus is mortified and humiliated. His siblings haven’t seen the video before: they could either be mad with him, protective of him, or all have different ways of reacting to it."

And so after that he finally got to escape thanks to that lovely cop, he hopes she made it out, and just when he thinks he’s out of danger, bam! He’s suddenly in fricking 1968 in the middle of the god damn Vietnam war and his time machine thingy isn’t working.

He wasn’t one to just wander around after hours for no reason- that was more Klaus’s gig. Whatever it was had really gotten under his skin. Unfortunately, his brother was too emotionally constipated to say what was on his mind.

But what happened after he revealed the information? How did he end up in the closet? How did he handle the long hours locked up until Hazel and Cha-Cha came back late at night? How did he handle the guilt of telling about Five? How did he handle flashbacks and panic attacks?

Romeo, Question Mark by sunnymusings. this fic healed something in my soul the first time I read it and I love it soooo so much. it’s a tales of arcadia fic but specifically it’s an aromantic jim piece, and I will never be over how validating and sweet and genuine it is. reading it is like curling up under my favorite blanket on a rainy day.

10. 👽 A fic that isn’t prose (poetry, text fic, etc.)

Genesis 22:12 by Elendraug… it’s a poem from cas to sam set after jack in the box and I cannot recommend it enough!!! It’s scathing and ice cold and agonized all at once and I am utterly obsessed with it

15. 📚 A fic you wish you could display on your bookshelf

I HAVE SEVERAL so I will take this as an opportunity to talk up some of my most beloved fics

Lamb to the Slaughter by the fantastic @angelfishofthelord - this as a physical book would be sooo powerful it would have a stunning cover and be one of those books that you’re utterly entranced by and then when you finish you put it in a place of honor on the bookshelf as you wipe away your tears

Your Future Hasn't Been Written Yet by @sakon76 - in addition to being my favorite fic trope it’s also absolutely and utterly wonderful. AND it’s super long so I bet it would be one of those book series where the spines make a picture when you line them all up together, which would only add to the story’s charm

Mountains and Badgermolehills by Glass_Onion - this is an atla fic (canon divergent au, more specifically) that features a slow burn enemies to best friends!! I love platonic love so this is an absolute DELIGHT, not to mention the narration is the perfect blend of witty and heartfelt and hilarious.

Two Roads in the Woods by skimmingthesurface - this is an otgw sequel fic, and it’s excellent. it captures the vibe of the show but with more body horror and a particular brand of fear that comes from the narrator being a 9 year old. anywayy I read it last fall and adored it so I’m looking forward to reading it again this year

Starless Eyes Remain by heyshalina - this is a character study for umbrella academy ben hargreeves and it is a masterpiece!! it’s a rare fic that actually gives ben the complexity he deserves, and the way it handled ben’s death still haunts me in the best possible way. also it has fantastic takes on his relationships with the other siblings

the only way for us to go by trell (qunlat) - another character study, this one for my beloved douxie from tales of arcadia. this fic is just so beautifully written, authentic, and spirited that I’d call it a must read. it also nails some really complicated character dynamics and expands beautifully on elements that canon didn’t, and I could probably talk about it for hours so I’ll stop now and just say that I love it a lot lol

With his left hand, he brushes the image, noticing the unusual diamond ring on his ring finger.

"Klaus?" the familiar voice makes him turn in the direction of the room.

The man he thought was asleep slowly approaches him, his brain screaming at him to flee the place, but his body is unresponsive. He is paralyzed.

His heart beats rapidly in his chest and he can practically hear every beat in his ears. The closer the man gets, the less his body responds.

"Good morning, future Mr. Hargreeves," the brown-eyed man murmurs, kissing him, it's just a chaste lip pressure, though the hands-on his ass don't touch him in a chaste way.

"Ben?" He asks, because he's not sure if this is some kind of dream or he's dead, and now he's trapped in a fantasy that he still can't decide if it's good or bad.

Time travel always confuses him.

Every single thing fragilecapricornpanic has ever written. I’m not kidding. This writer is amazing. Don’t be put off by a few formatting errors. They’ve written a ton of oneshots, many with pre-canon sibling interactions, and every single one I’ve read so far has been wonderful. Very rare accurate depictions of what drug addiction is really like both for the addict and for their loved ones. Ones I highly recommend are Tacos(missing scene where Allison, Klaus, and Vanya actually get tacos before heading to the salon), Bright Pink Rubber Gloves (Diego meets Claire for the first time and it takes a turn), Vanya’s Window(Klaus confuses the hell out of Vanya with a bizarre request), Book Club (Klaus takes Ben to a book club and offers to be his translator), and Do I Have to Ask? (Vanya, Diego, Klaus, and Ben break your heart).

two can be as bad as one by myeyesarenotblue. A gripping, Diego-centric power swap involving all the siblings that takes twists and turns and is genuinely one of my favorite fics out there. Oh, and some miscalculation de-aged their bodies temporarily. At least, Five is pretty sure it’s all temporary.

The German Brotherhood…No Wait Don’t Call It That by NezumiPi. I was jonesing for some Luther and Klaus bromance when this came out and it’s wonderful. If you want a fic that truly feels like it could be canon, this is it.

Roll for Damage by Shadowscast. A no-powers AU where Vanya invites Dave to the family D&D game and you can already tell it’s adorable Klave stuff where they’re both flawed. Something I love about this author is that they engage you so much with the character study without too much suspense, so they’re great to read when you want something deep but your anxiety can’t handle an action fic. 18+ only.

too close for comfort now by myeyesarenotblue. Instead of being saved by the serum, Luther dies and starts following Klaus and Ben around. Unfinished but still excellent, will make you want to kill Reginald more than usual.

nothing up my sleeve by hotelbravo. Ray and Allison’s love story from Ray’s POV. Unfinished, but the chapters are kind of one-shot-y and it seems to be updating. Completely presh and a perfect example of why we need more fics that aren’t about Klaus or Five.

Count to Four by Ezra_Rynn. Another one of my favorite fics out there, and a rare one where Vanya is completely in character and not a just hand-wringing bystander. Vanya and Klaus get into a bad situation together and, for now, all they have is each other. Starts out as a character study, turns very actiony.

Man on the Moon by nishiki. Pre-canon AU where Reginald forces Luther to kick Klaus out, but a few minutes later, Luther decides he can’t live with the guilt and leaves with Klaus. They then proceed to road trip to Allison’s home in LA while Klaus detoxes. It is the best idea they ever had. Or it’s a terrible idea but they’re not sure where else they can go.

close your eyes and surrender by myeyesarenotblue. I keep recommending this author, I know, but they’re great. Vanya-centric AU in which, in their teens, she agrees to stop taking her meds if Klaus will agree to get sober. Takes place shortly after Ben’s death and features a Reginald who is legitimately frightening. If you want Vanya bonding with her siblings in their teens and being unbelievably badass while learning things about herself, this is a beautiful one for it.

Icarus is Flying by TheSevenUmbrellas (RosyPages). A creative take on how show!Klaus could be OP without having his comic powers. It’s post-s2, and Luther, Diego, and Klaus get captured by Reginald and Klaus’ PTSD gets triggered badly enough for a new power to manifest. Only, it’s a power so destructive that it leaves the siblings wondering what to do next. One of those I keep rereading. Klaus’ grief over Ben will kill ya.

Summary: Klaus has a list of names on his arm - his seven soulmates. Six for his siblings, their numbers lined up in an orderly row, sorted by numerical value. And then, beneath Diego’s, a second Number Two. He wonders what that’s all about.

Comments: This is just a good Klaus and Ben fic, with a focus on Sparrow!Ben. The guy really just needs to accept love, I swear.

TUA Fics that I adore and I think you would too:

1) come and pick me up (Words: 11,751 Chapters: 6/6, Gen.)

aka 5 times Vanya's orchestra is introduced to one of her siblings and the one time no introductions are needed.

I enjoy outsider pov fics very much and if you like them as well then you should definitely read this story because it's hilarious and sweet.

2) Fighting (Pre)Determinism (Words:91,535 Chapters: 6/8, Teen+)

They go back in time, determined to rewrite their own family history. Only problem is, only one of them looks the proper age to get near their younger selves.

Or, six months after Five stormed out, determined to time travel, he returns home. His siblings are happy to have him back, but he's acting differently...

(Or, Five goes undercover as himself. Twice the siblings should make saving the world easier, right? Yet somehow, he's only now realizing how many issues his family has to fix.)

The plot here is A+ and it's a very good fix it fic-ish. It's sweet and sad and a very very good read. I can't wait to see how it'll end.

3)My Job Is To Take Care Of You (Words: 13,232 Chapters: 1/1, Teen+)

Luther avoids the apocalypse, now he needs to make sure he and Five survive the aftermath.

Lovelovelove how sweet and sad this story is. *spoiler*don't worry there is a surprisingly happy ending.

Number One is already sick of the new houseguests his father is hosting at the Sparrow Academy. Who are these annoying idiots who won't ever leave him alone, and why do they keep calling him their brother?

In the new timeline, the person who was once Ben has a conversation with each of the siblings he doesn't remember.

This is angsty and sad but the ending is sweet and hopeful and just great 💕💕.

5) We Only See Each Other at Arrests and Bails (Words: 15,712 Chapters: 6/6, Gen.)

aka the five times Diego picked up Klaus from the police station, and the one time Klaus picked up Diego.

Annnd to finish off this list we have another outsider pov. No angst here sir just Diego and Klaus being brothers.
