It's miraculous, really, how this guy strings together all of those sentences without a single gap long enough to offer a 'no' or 'stop', let alone 'what the hell are you talking about'. Python simply gapes slightly while watching the paper unfold crease by neat little crease. He's been subjected to spirited, long-winded lectures on his behavior before—of course he has—but it's one thing to hear it from a friend of many years. To get this sort of treatment from this foppish little carrot-top he hardly knows from Anri is… Well. He's already tuned out somewhere after his attitude was brought up, but presumptuous seems like a good word here. Annoyance is kept at bay largely by keeping his mind elsewhere. Is this what it would be like if Forsyth and Clive had an insufferable child? Is it possible that is where this student came from? If Azama can have a daughter at the age she is, then anything is possible. Probably. Ah, the droning sound in the background of Python's thoughts is gone. The kid decided to take a dramatic pause. The archer blinks slowly, absorbing that baffling offer. He raises a hand to ask for the space to speak. "So you're sayin' that if I switched to your class you'd give me more feedback? Tell me all the ways I could be doin' my job better?" He huffs out a laugh. "I'll pass. Thanks." His boots click with the turn of his heels, intent on making his exit before he learns if there are any more lines to Mister Perfect's extensive notes.

this morning I finished reading High Performance Python. I think it was a good book and I learned more about how Python works in general, even if a lot of the optimizations explained in the book aren't super applicable to anything that I'm working on at the moment. if you do any sort of scientific computing, I think this book will be pretty helpful.

I also read Alex Russel's Reckoning series today and wrote a few notes in my commonplace book. I'd say this series of blog posts is pretty much required reading if you do any sort of front-end web dev work. (tl;dr heavy JavaScript-based SPA frameworks are used far more often than they should be, and they're destroying the usability of the web for folks at the margins. bad design & engineering decisions have real-world impacts, like preventing people from accessing public services and benefits websites.) I highly recommend giving this series a read.

alright SO. they're called underlings. i think. they liked to call themselves a lot of different names but "underling" was the most commonly used term by humans and it's the name i'll use in this post

LARVAL STAGE 1

is the size of a small piece of thread. they sneak into food, usually food that's been in a damp part of the wilderness awhile (eg. foraged mushrooms, shade-loving plants, wild game meat), hoping to be eaten by humans. they sit in the intestines for a few days, gorging on the host's semi-digested meals until they reach stage 2

LARVAL STAGE 2

is about the size of a baby ball python. it eats its way through the intestine lining and squiggles up the spine like a corkscrew until it reaches the skull. some of them will crawl all the way up the intestines, through the entire digestive system and use the back of the nasal cavity to reach the skull (VERY UNPLEASANT) but the former is the more common tactic. it'll hollow out a little nook for itself in the skull and attach itself to the brain.

TAKEOVER STAGE

takes exactly 6 minutes for almost all cases. i'm not super well-versed in how the nervous system works, so exactly HOW this stage happens is a mystery.

the underling will search through the host's brain and begin communicating in whichever language they're most fluent in. it's unclear whether the creature is physically capable of making sounds or if the host can only "hear" it through their thoughts. mostly, it just gloats about all the havoc it will wreak with its new body. the host will lose feeling in their extremities, then the ability to move them, then they experience a sort of "dullness" to their emotions. calm is the wrong word... it's as though the ability to feel strong emotions fades. finally, the host's thoughts will slow and fade as well.

PUPATION(???)

after this, the underling takes full control of the host's body. it will need to consume 7-20 humans (they don't eat their own host for some reason) before reaching maturity, so it has to be strategic about not being caught by authorities before it can reach its desired body count. most if not ALL of it's understanding of the world comes from the host's brain. it'll typically target the people emotionally closest to the host. whether this is for convenience, nutritional benefit or just to psychologically torment the host is unclear.

after reaching maturity, they burst free from the skull and take off into the night sky like flighted manta rays, never to be seen again. some speculate they're an alien species trying to return home, and their emergent flight takes them all the way to the stars

the few lucky souls that survived long enough to hold a conversation with an underling report they're extremely xenophobic and have a sort of fascination with ruling not just the planet, but "all of existence"

Freedom Through Code

People always tout the career-related benefits of learning to code, but something I've noticed in my years writing it is that there's a sense of freedom that comes with it. I can just like, do things that I want or need to do. Learning some basic Python opened up so many doors for me, if I wanted to know something or if I wanted to do something I could just do it myself. Some examples:

Need to rename a ton of files (like removing something that a converter added to the file name)? Just use a for loop!

Need to convert a list of text from one format to another? (like point form list to a CSV that excel can use) Just use string.split and some slicing to rejoin everything.

Writing a math proof and need to come up with a counterexample for something? Just brute-force it if the case is based on integers. (very helpful for modular arithmetic problems)

Need to do a task that's actually like 9 really different steps? You can usually just write a program to do it in 15 minutes.

Doing a really complicated math problem and want to be able to check you punched a number in? Desmos works great, but if you need to use custom functions that aren't supported, just write it all up in Python. You might run into some small floating point weirdness, but it'll be minor enough to ignore.

There are a TON of tools online that you can make yourself in the Python shell faster than you could google and find them. Even if you never want to touch the computer science space with a 10 foot pole, learning major skills like this grants you a unique kind of freedom that you can only achieve by turning an arcane space into one that's just foggy.

im currently a data analytics major in uni and currently learning python! i’m currently doing well grasping the concepts with the reading and writing it down. however, i know its better to learn to code by actually..writing code.

I read that I should follow a random code (like a snake game or something) and then copy it and write it code for code but then change some things up etc (i hope that makes sense how im asking this)

is there any websites that show an actual code and then I can just copy and follow that to learn? or how should I go about learning to actually write code and not get stuck in “tutorial hell” ?

When I was learning back 3 years ago, I did more the "watching videos + replicate the code" method to learning how to plan, build and deploy projects, even with the very beginner project videos! I didn't do much searching online for projects in maybe articles, blog posts, etc and replicate it. However, that was because I learn more in seeing than reading - that's why I'm bad at reading documentation(!) (I would search for video explainations to the documentations...).

I know on my blog I promote "don't idly watch tutorial videos all the time and actually start coding" kind of mindset but I'm not completely disregarding the benefits of watching such tutoiral videos. Seeing how other people's approach to a project idea is great! One project idea, hundreds of approaches to it!

Take notes while following tutorials. Write down what you learn and how you solve problems in your project. This will solidify your understanding and serve as a reference later.

Once you grasp the basics from a tutorial, experiment within your version of the project. Try modifying the code, adding features, and see what happens. This is where the real learning happens. LITERALLY HOW I LEARNED.

@sneakyxthexclown Sorry, it took a few days to get to this! Had a bunch of things pop up all at once, and uh.... this is a topic that's actually HARD for me to write about. So I couldn't just crank it out in 30 seconds. 😅 I don't really like complimenting myself and am very uncomfortable receiving compliments. So we'll consider this a personal challenge.

Curiosity. I like to delve into details, whether it's work or fandom content or anything else that catches my interest. It's probably pretty obvious from my blog and how I interact in general. It can be a distraction at times, but it's overall a benefit to me. I'm the person who will Google the weird info and get answers. I'm the person who asks detailed questions to try and nail down projects or figured out potential problems in a situation. It helps when we're stuck with things at work. It helps when I need to look up something outside of work. It helps with writing/art. Overall, it's more of a benefit than a detriment. And I wouldn't want to be a person who doesn't like learning.

Animal lover. I've had pets for literally my entire life: everything from bug terrariums to fish and anoles and a gerbil and dogs and cats and horses. I did school reports on them. We went to museums specifically to see dino/prehistoric fossils. I worked at a pet store for 4.5 years. I used to help out at charity events where customers would get their pics taken with big pythons/boas. I've raised rescue kittens. I co-owned a horse for 19 years. I have a Cat Mom hat a friend got me for Christmas. XD I literally can't imagine who I'd be if I didn't love animals.

Quippy? Not sure what to call this one. I'm not always the best conversationalist. I can fall into awkward silences at times or overlap other people. But I have gotten decent at making little quippy jokes in convos.

Creative. I do like to have external inspiration (which is why I love being in a fandom), but I do have a need to create. It might be a pain for my budget and my personal space to flit between a bajillion hobbies, but I'd rather have them than not! I wouldn't have my job or be the person I am without it.

Struggled with a couple options with option 5 but I'm going to go with martial arts training! I'm not the best but have been taking it for over 12 years. I could be better or more consistent, and some health issues hinder that a bit, but I'm proud that I took a basic class because I was "just curious" about how an asthmatic like me with crappy coordination might handle class. I managed to find a cool, supportive group and have kept at it for over a decade and 2nd degree blackbelt. I've also helped judge/score keep at a few small regional tournament. It's not something I discuss much online but something I feel like I've definitely "earned" through consistency.

I guess it’s probably not that like into it ? Since Python isn’t really the monkeys or the mothers it just like . Ties into his main theming of experimentation and . The behaviors . Like he has similar vibes to his experiment in a way . Hm .

I’ll give you my interpretation because I am literally required to spend hours comparing these experiments so there’s a shot the points I’d make are difficult to spot but there’s a few key things about harlow and Lorenz in psychology that you’re meant to compare in write ups about attachment. Lorenz is considered to be by far the more ethical one with the only ‘unethical’ idea being the separation of the greylag geese from their mother, but Lorenz raised the geese himself so this was . They weren’t deprived from an attachment figure apart from in one variation to test the time something had to imprint within. The geese grew up normally with a few weird traits that just seemed kind of out of place, nothing much else. Harlow is criticised as incredibly unethical with variations where the cloth mother would stab the animals at random intervals, a scary stimuli would be introduced to see where the monkeys ran and it was just generally regarded as incredibly. The monkeys used grew up socially maladjusted and more likely to behave out of character, aggressively or showing no ability to raise young. HOWEVER. the key thing to learn from an experiment into attachment, from the human psychology perspective is how it can be generalised to people. People do not imprint. The greylag geese are interesting but cannot be generalised to real people. Obviously primates can’t either but Harlow was credited for lending a huge amount of credibility to preventing child abuse and trying to get young children to develop secure attachments to benefit them in future as much as possible. Overall, it’s considered to have done a lot more for the world.

To be honest I wouldn’t use Time Eater. I’d still do the simple plot like any Mainline Mario game. Because that formula works well.

I’d say the plot could have Bowser make a new Universe to rule over with Peach. Because if he can’t take over the Universe, he’ll just make his own. He tries to kidnap Peach, but Mario stops him. Except the Universe he made wasn’t finished yet, and it was in a TV set.

So the TV set blows up and the Universe in it comes out. It becomes a black hole, and pulls in a bunch of characters and stuff.

Mario wakes up and sees that he’s in a museum. Each area is an exhibit of an open world like level. Basically each exhibit has a big open world and you go there to do stuff.

Fighting enemies, collecting stuff, or progressing story. Combining stuff like 64, Galaxy, and Odyssey. You can artifacts to display in the museum. Unlocking fun 2-D levels that are like a Metroid Mania. Where you can run around and collect items like power ups and coins. Each level is randomized so any artifacts you collect doesn’t have the same level. Some artifacts give easy types of levels, others give levels that are harder. You can put the artifacts you collected into a storage room. This storage room is a room you can go in a collect them the fun way. But if you want to collect them the easy way, you can just press a button a boom artifact mine. The fun way is like Mario Maker, where you can add enemies, traps, and bosses. If you don’t want to make a level, it can make it’s own level for you giving many challenges.

The story is that Bowser is looking for Peach. Because a good majority of Mario characters are all over the place. Each character has their own unique skills that have benefits when you play in each world. Where you can beat the game with any character, but they give versatility and strategy for each play through.

The game ends with Bowser getting defeated and the Universe he made taken away. Now it’s in a closest collecting dust.

For bosses, I’d go the Mario Odyssey route. Where each one requires a certain power up to defeat. Having a plethora of news ones and old ones. Yet they are reused like Bowser Jr for example. He has an ink-like dragon form, like those type of long slender dragons with no wings. Its design has a rubber hose base look. Using cartoonish things like boxing gloves, hammers, anvils, and wacky rays that shoot things like words, enemies, and just plain unpredictable.

Some worlds can be reminiscent to previous games. Except it’s better for it to be it’s own thing then be what it wants us to reminds us of.

Really good all around also sorry for taking long to respond to this, i'm taking a bit of a break from Ask's and i want to focus on other things.

But to give my thoughts i like what you'd laid out. It genuinely feels like a Mario game pitch i could see Nintendo and the Mario Team doing.

I do admit Randomized Metroidvania (or as you worded it "Metroid Mania") levels could have some problems that could be annoying but i can see it working but imo i think its better just to stick to pre-planned level design.

I still would like to do a post about Mario going through his own White Space but I definitely think this pitch is like the better choice for a more unique and original game.

But something about how White Space and how it does Time Travel is something I would love to apply to Mario one way or another. Because Sonic and Shadow Generations at least to me has always been a unique but awesome way to celebrate a Franchises history and legacy.

But for now that can wait, right now ironically enough i'm working on a post called "Why is Chaos Island in Shadow Generations" right now and it's killing me dude and i have another oneshot i just thought of.. and i'm learning Python right now so that's been fun as well as weird... and learning how to draw is something..

But speaking of Tobin, I get his A support with Kliff. Teaching him social skills ^_^

I mentioned in my last log that I went to the dragon shrine (?) north of the village a bit early. So now I'm bringing Celica's team to the village. We recruit Atlas. Cool.

Then we go back to the dragon shrine, and Saber gets a class upgrade.

I give it a night before deciding what to class Atlas as. Even though it seems he would benefit more as a mercenary, I make him a cavalier because (1) we already have two mercenaries and (2) I need the mobility.

But wait! I read later on that Atlas (and Catria and Palla) would leave if you try to go too far north. I wonder why he didn't.

Then I realized I haven't properly explored the dragon shrine, so I do that. There's a battle with three Necrodragons, and Leon crits one of them while I'm not looking. Haha.

Genny gets Physic (hooray for ranged recovery!) and Kamui gets a class upgrade.

Back on Alm's side, we get Luthier. Finally, a mage on this side! But we'll come back later. Mila's temple is ahead!

So the first battle with Mikhail is... terrible.

Saber and Boey run ahead, and so they get ganged up on by the arcanists. Turnwheel time.

Then Celica gets killed through the door.

...So that was half an hour wasted.

The second time, Genny ends up isolated and killed by the gargoyles. Turnwheel. But she's still too far behind, and nobody can move close enough to protect her. So I bring Leon next to her and hope she survives this time. If I can't get her to survive this battle, I'd have to restart. But she survives this turn.

Meanwhile, Leon tells Kamui once again how Valbar is the perfect man and that he could never compare. Then he tells Valbar he's fine with having an unrequited love.

This battle took three hours. Uggggh. (I probably could have benefited from recruiting the pegasus girls, but...)

He gets killed by the archers in the next map. Turnwheel. Now Python is getting ganged up on. Turnwheel. Now Silque. Aaaah, I think I could use a bow knight. (Or I should have done some grinding)

Can the witches please stop ganging up on Lukas? (I forgot if he died there, but I didn't mention a turnwheel, so probably not) And can the archers leave Mathilda alone? It was cruel enough that she was going to be executed by arrows.

Closer to Tartarrah, Mathilda and Faye take out another arcanist. Too close to him, it turns out, because he kills Faye with a super powerful spell. So I rewind and take out a different arcanist.

Once we're in range of Delthea, she kills Tobin. But we're so close, and I can't figure out any other configuration, so I let Tobin stay dead. Sorry Tobin. (And I later learn that Alm could have used Subdue with the royal sword, except... He was still holding the lightning sword because I never bothered to give him the royal sword.)

So Kliff goes in for the kill... and I misclick and hit Delthea. With a crit, to boot. Turnwheel.

So now Kliff hits the correct target. And he crits again.

That's the end of Alm's side, then. Now for Celica...

Do you find corn snakes have more personality than some other species?

Hey friend!

Well... Hmm. I don't know that I'd say more personality. I'd say more of the personality traits I personally gravitate towards.

All snakes have personalities and individual preferences and avoidances. I've worked professionally with large snakes, small snakes, and venomous snakes and no two of the same species were exactly alike in terms of temperament. The old belief that a ball python is a living "pet rock" has been dispelled by simply giving these animals appropriate enclosures. Most of the animals we consider "less intelligent" or "primal" by human standards lead rich inner lives that we just can't anthropomorphize into something personally relatable.

North American ratsnakes are generalist hunters, not ambush predators, and they are often secondary or tertiary consumers in their food webs, meaning they're both predator and prey. They are active and curious, sometimes verging on anxious. They want to know what's going on, who's nearby, what they're doing. Is it food? Is it danger?

They tend to rely on crypsis and threat displays for defense, meaning they do not benefit in nature by being overtly aggressive. This makes them a great candidate for captive keeping. The corn snakes we keep in captivity have been selectively bred for tameness and calmness along with color expression over many generations, amplifying their natural proclivity for being pretty chill with humans.

The more time you spend learning about and interacting with an animal, the better you know that animal, right? I gravitated towards corn snakes because of their variety of color morphs and ease of keeping and I've kept corn snakes for 15 years or more, both professionally and as a hobby. Maybe I like the snakes in genus Pantherophis best because I've spent the most time with them and I know their expressions and behaviors well enough to be able to read them.

I'm sure if you were to ask an alternate universe version of me who kept Burmese pythons the same question, I'd give roughly the same answer.
