Should all of them be dads? Probably not, but that won’t stop me from indulging myself.

Jan Maas

He is over the moon excited about it.

He’s almost as happy as he is scared shitless (but you’d never know he was scared).

As soon as he’s able to, he’s bringing that baby to Nelson Road to introduce them to everyone.

He even brought everyone the traditional beschuit met Muisjes to announce your baby.

He’s a pretty goofy dad, very playful and amusing for them.

Thanks to his height, your child misses nothing (but the same can’t be said for the people behind him.)

Jan has a very loose approach to parenting. He likes to let them make mistakes so they can learn from them.

Of course he’s there when they need and want him but he isn’t going to be over protective. They’re gonna fall when learning to walk or riding a bike and they’re gonna make mistakes.

Jan doesn’t want a perfect kid, just his kid is good enough.

Isaac McAdoo

Fucking Isaac.

He’s the exact opposite of Jan in the sense that he’s very overly cautious but about the wrong things.

He’s a nervous wreck about them learning to walk and run because he worries about them getting hurt but he’s also not good at remembering to latch cabinets closed or even close doors all the way.

He loves the baby with every fiber of his being but once they learn to walk it’s game over.

That child and any others are going to run laps around him.

He really thought he’d be able to keep up.

He lives to see the two of you at the games.

Twins with the baby every so often and he had a special onesie made that looks like his jersey.

Sam Obisanya

He’s gentle.

He’s the parent who has full on conversations with the babbling infant.

Bedtime stories every night.

He doesn’t enjoy putting the baby down, his favorite thing is when he’s relaxing and the baby is just on his chest/in his lap.

Sam is all about the bonding experiences, he wants to have as good of a relationship with his child(ren) as he does with his own father. He wants to be the best father he can be.

His face really lights up when someone, anyone, asks about how you and the baby are doing and there is no off button for that.

Richard Montlaur

Another parent who has full-blown conversations with the baby.

He’s about halfway on the strictness spectrum.

Richard really wants them to be able to do things and learn on their own within reason, like he was raised.

But that being said, the second they’re old enough, he is taking them to his parents farm to show them everything.

He can be a goofy dad but he prefers to do it in the privacy of your flat.

In all honesty, he gets a solid B/B+ for his parenting skills.

He does have to call his parents a lot for advice because when it’s just him and the baby, he doubts himself.

Jamie Tartt

Scared. Shitless.

Jamie would rather jump off the London bridge than risk doing something to mess up the kid so he’s incredibly overly cautious.

He calls his dad for advice.

I’m just fucking around. He’d rather move to Texas than call his father for parenting advice. He actually calls Ted.

And side note, Ted answers every single time. He answers all of Jamie’s questions no matter how stupid they may or may not be.

Jamie holds the baby as they’re made of glass because for the longest time he’s afraid just breathing wrong will make the baby hate him or mess them up.

He has so much love for the child but for the longest time its overshadowed by his anxiety.

Once he gets a hold on the anxiety though, he’s just the ultimate girl dad. 

He excels whether or not he thinks so and that baby loves him.

Dani Rojas

Dani is the most fun parent.

There’s no crying fit he can’t stop.

And thank god for it.

He’s more than happy to take the night shift unless he has a game the next day, which is fair.

He really enjoys singing the songs his mother sang to him when he was a growing up.

He gets a little lost sometimes, but his hearts always in the right place. 

He has high hopes they’ll like football and want to be around it, he really wants to bond over it but he won’t force it.

Thierry Zoreaux

He's kind of nervous because he’s so far from home and he always thought he’d raise his children around where he was raised so they can have the same experiences he did growing up.

He’s the one who reads parenting books and goes to the preparation classes.

This man is ready for everything.

He takes a logical approach when it comes to making decisions about the baby.

The most illogical thing he does is buy baby yeezys. Multiple pairs of tiny little yeezy shoes that he can match with his own.

Moe Bumbercatch

First of all, Moe knits so many blankets and booties and little toys for the baby its unreal.

He spends the entire pregnancy knitting things, including a little miniature version of his jersey to put on the baby’s teddy bear.

He likes to take the baby out and about to show them the city. 

Moe isn’t the best at keeping a schedule because he’s so easily distracted but he tries his best, he’s gotten a little better.

He truly enjoys playing with the baby and bonding and being a dad.

He loves being a footballer, he loves being a partner, and he loves being a dad. 

He’s good at keeping calm when things get hectic, and they do sometimes, but he always manages a level head. 

Colin Hughes

He’s not allowed to put the baby in the Lamborghini. It’s too much car for him.

He’s very fun, very active, very present overall.

He’s good at making the baby laugh and his camera roll proves as much.

Colin has the time of his life with the baby around.

He’s a good lad, great with any child you give him.

A+ in child rearing with a D in driving.

8/10 times he falls asleep with the baby on his chest but 100% of the time he will wake up if you take the baby to put in their bassinet

TAART UIT DE KOELKAST

Als je jarig bent in de zomer, ken je het ‘probleem’. Je wilt wel graag zelf een lekkere taart maken, maar op een warme dag zet je liever de oven niet aan. Dit recept is de oplossing: hij is te maken met koelkast, maar zonder oven. Kijk voor meer taarten uit de koelkast in Landleven juni 2022.

DIT HEB JE NODIG:

1 l melk

65 g custardpoeder

65 g suiker

1 rol beschuit

1 pak theebiscuitjes

½ tot ¾ pot aardbeienjam

ZO GA JE TE WERK:

Breng de melk tegen de kook aan in een pannetje.

Roer het custardpoeder met de suiker in een kom.

Voeg een flinke scheut hete melk toe en roer goed door met een garde.

Voeg dit mengsel toe aan de pan met hete melk en laat enkele minuten zachtjes doorkoken terwijl je goed blijft roeren.

Haal van het vuur en laat iets afkoelen.

Bedek de bodem van een springvorm met beschuiten; vul ook alle hoekjes en gaatjes goed op met stukjes beschuit.

Verdeel de helft van de custard over de beschuiten en strijk mooi glad.

Leg hier een laag biscuitjes op.

Verdeel de rest van de custard erover, strijk mooi glad en bedek met weer een laag biscuitjes.

Verwarm de jam in een pannetje en strijk over de taart.

Laat de taart een nacht opstijven in de koelkast en serveer de volgende dag met geklopte slagroom.

Dutch peculiarities: part 1

Gender reveals

Though gender reveals have gotten a bad rep this past few years, there is one Dutch tradition surrounding it that I absolutely love.

To announce the gender of the baby, "beschuit met muisjes" is often served. Beschuit (biscuit, sweet toast) served with little sprinkles of anice ("little mice). The anice is either white and pink when it is a girl, or white and blue when it is a boy.

My favourite part of this tradition is that it is not only used to reveal the gender to family members. Instead, often it is one of the parents serving the biscuits to their workcollagues, or the sibling serving biscuits to their classmates. Sometimes even teachers will serve the biscuits to their students.

Note: the serving of the biscuits can both be used to announce the gender of the baby, and to celebrate the birth of the baby

Sol Fertilis: Baby Shower

Baby Showers take place three weeks after the child’s birth. During that time, the parents would get attached to the pup as the spouse would recover from childbirth. They are also given a layette package, which is a box that contains white baby clothes and supplies. The staff would readjust their schedule to help take care of the newborn and its mother.

Guests are expected to have semi-formal attires. The children are sent to the playroom and congratulate the older sibling if there is one. The priest would attend with their formal ceremonial clothes. A female Delta Minus would watch over the baby shower to make sure it is in order and make sure that none of the guests are sick. 

As the guests arrive, the couple would get ready to come to meet the guests with the baby. The dominant partner would be wearing their regular colors as their spouse is wearing white clothes. The latter would be then seated in a white chair known as the Peacock chair, decorated with the colors of the baby’s rank. 

Alpha/Omega & Alpha/Alpha: Their baby shower is taken place in the Parlour Room and the garden. 

Delta Plus/Gamma Plus: Their baby shower is taken place in the Living Room and the garden. 

Delta Minus/Beta Plus: Their baby shower is held in a private venue since their households do not have much space.

Beta Neutral: Their baby shower is held in a public venue. 

Beta Minus/Gamma Minus: Their baby shower is held in a section of their neighborhood’s communal area, which is a large open area in the center of their neighborhood. Once the baby is born, a female Delta Minus would come in and help the parents with the arrangements. 

During the baby shower, the guests would give gifts, enjoy food from the buffet, play games, drink beer, congratulate the parents, and gawk at the sight of the baby.

Auto's van brood-, beschuit- en banketbakkerij 'De Korenschoof' aan de Zalmhaven noordzijde, 1922-1925. De bakkerij bevond zich aan het Vasteland.

Het Vasteland is de naam die de kopers van erven op het einde van de westzijde van de Leuvehaven bij de Zoutkeet aan dit gebied gaven. Zij voerden in 1620 een proces met de stad. De kopers vonden zich benadeeld door de kosten die ze hadden moeten maken om hun erven te verhogen. De grond verzakte regelmatig, slechts een gedeelte in dit gebied lag op vaste bodem. Het gebied stond eerst bekend als Stadsplein; omstreeks 1720 komt de naam Vasteland in gebruik.

De oorspronkelijk Zalmhaven, ook wel 'Salmgat' geheten, was het meest zuidelijke deel van de Schiedamsevest buitendijks. In 1612, toen de stad werd uitgebreid langs de Schiedamsedijk en Leuve tot aan de Maas, had men eerst ook het plan nog meer westelijk te gaan. Er waren reeds erven uitgegeven aan een geprojecteerde Vissershaven, Elfthaven en Zalmhaven. Het plan werd niet uitgevoerd en de kopers moesten in 1620 schadeloos worden gesteld. Toch heette het eerdergenoemde gedeelte van de vest voortaan Salmgat, later Salmhaven.

Door de verplaatsing van de scheepstimmerwerven van de Blaak naar het Nieuwewerk moest deze haven of dit gat vergroot worden. Toen is de kom gegraven, die in 1693 Salmhaven of Nieuwe Buijsegat' wordt genoemd. De oude Zalmhaven, die toegang gaf tot de nieuwe, werd voor de behoefte te smal en te ondiep. In 1702 is er een nieuwe doorvaart gemaakt door het Westerse Hoofd, uitkomende in de Leuvehaven. De oude toegang werd in 1782 gedempt. Als Balkengat bleef het oude Salmgat nog tot 1891 bestaan. Toen werden de slikken opgehoogd en op het daardoor verkregen terrein werd de Zalmstraat aangelegd. De haven en straat danken hun naam aan de zalmvisserij op de Maas. Van 1886 tot 1959 liep van de Zalmhaven naar het Nieuwland de Zalmhavensteeg. De haven is gedempt, de naam is op 28 januari 1997 ingetrokken door B&W.

Rabarber

Houd je van rabarber en van jam en wil je eens wat anders proberen? Ga dan eens voor deze jam van rabarber, met een vleugje citroen, kaneel en vanille. Een combinatie die verassend lekker is, zelfs als je helemaal niet van rabarber houd. Ook deze is heerlijk op je boterham, cracker, beschuit of yoghurt. Ook is deze jam heel goed te gebruiken als aan of toevoeging van je taart of cake.

Er is weer volop jong leven in het hertenkamp aan de Dommelpas in Son en Breugel. Er zijn onder andere weer veel geitjes en lammetjes geboren. Op zondag 16 april 2023 tussen 13.00 en 17.00 uur organiseert de gemeente Son en Breugel daarom ons jaarlijkse kraamfeestje. Officiële opening Rond 13.30 uur opent wethouder Jan Boersma officieel deze extra feestelijke editie van het kraamfeestje. Extra feestelijk kraamfeestje Dit jaar is het kraamfeestje extra feestelijk, omdat wij ook aandacht besteden aan het 50 jarig bestaan van het hertenkamp. Het hertenkamp is feestelijk versierd en de kinderen kunnen meedoen aan verschillende spelletjes. En we zorgen dit jaar niet alleen voor beschuit met muisjes, maar ook voor een andere feestelijke traktatie. Het hertenkamp bestond in 2021 50 jaar. Op dat moment konden wij er helaas geen aandacht aan besteden. Welkom in de stal U bent van harte welkom in het hertenkamp om een kijkje te nemen in de stal en de dieren te aaien. Verzorger Cor Essens is aanwezig om te vertellen over de dieren en uw vragen te beantwoorden.
