basically big time rush is the monkees if the monkees had been made within the confines of Respectable Television. BTR (the show) has four young people who are a band. The Monkees The Show has four young people who are in a band. However. The Monkees The Show has more intrigue because:
a) they're pretty much self-reliant within the television show story ("the product"). They have one authority figure (their landlord Mr. Babbitt) who they only answer to when it's funny OR if they want to (see also: my whole Thing about Millie from s1 e27 and how the monkee characters' whims can influence the plot) AND
b) they're pretty much doing Whatever the Fuck the creative team ("the production") can come up with.
In BTR there are not one, not two, but at least 3 or 4 authority figures limiting the main four characters when it comes to what they can do, when, where, and what the consequences for any of their actions will be (Kendall's mom (aka the fourth confirmed "jennifer" in the show for some reason?? literally everyone and their mother??? is named jennifer????), their boss Gustavo, their boss's assistant Kelly, their boss's boss Griffin, their landlord Mr. Bitters, and what the hell, may as well throw Katie Knight in there too. fuck it.).
Meanwhile, day-to-day, The Monkees The Show Characters have................. mike. And mike is a six-foot-tall anthropomorphized teacup chihuahua experiencing costco wholesale for the first time at rush hour.
The production style in BTR is also extremely inorganic compared to The Monkees' more improvisational style. Every shot, every reaction, every expression any character makes is VERY tightly directed and stylistic. Each frame is carefully formulated to fit the style of what A Nickelodeon Sitcom is. Which, yes, is Interesting. But that's not what this post is about.
basically what I'm saying is, the monkees worked because the characters were fucking around and finding out (while still being at least somewhat-omnipotent forces within the narratives they were experiencing, regardless of whether or not they were aware of it), and BTR is a milk-warm xerox copy of the general idea with WAY more restrictions placed on the characters.

Best of 2023 Music #15: Ryan Gosling “Push”
The other Ryan Gosling jam from Barbie was a cover detailing Ken’s inner turmoil.
Channeling the energy of Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty’s ode to being taken advantage of, somehow the corniness fades as Ryan Gosling puts the history of Ken being only the right hand of Barbie into a power ballad as he and the Ken’s join in a 4 hour MDCH and beachside serenade.
You feel the Kenergy with his emphasis on Robs lyrics and it’s all the better.
Tumblr media
Included the 4 Hour Version as a link for anyone with the same idea.
Cause we need more of these covers.
SUM 22: Ryan Gosling puts himself into the legacy of Ken as he uses Rob Thomas’ lyrical prowess and makes it more than Kenough.

Matchbox (Carl Perkins Cover)
This song stayed in the Beatles repertoire till at least ‘63 (this is only the first post we'll make on this song) and it was sung by everyone except George (including Pete Best), even though George was the biggest Carl Perkins fan. Ringo sang it with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, took the lead on it once he joined the Beatles, and still sings it in his live shows.
This recording (from June/July 1960) has Paul singing lead. Stu is attempting some slides on the bass, which is more than we would have expected from the way his bass playing generally gets described. There are probably 3 guitars, and Mike (briefly, and badly) drumming on a guitar case.
There’s a short spoken exchange at the end. Someone says something low, possibly something along the lines of “oh God, fuck it”, a second voice says “turn the tape off” and then a third voice says “it’s just ordinary”. Neither of the latter two voices sounds like any of John, Paul, or George to us. We think “it’s just ordinary” might be Mike, who had briefly come in with some very bad drumming just before the end. Could “turn the tape off” be Stu? The consensus is that there are no remaining public recordings of Stu’s voice (Astrid had at least one of him and John), but we can’t help hoping he’s on there somewhere.
ADDITION:
The track starts a line in. We think this might be because something else was taped over it. There's a 0:12 second clip of something that might be "Suicide" that could fit the space. However, the second version of 909 also starts around 0:12 seconds in, so it might not be related to "Matchbox."
Either way, Matchbox starts a little bit in and something was clearly recorded over it.
We have isolated the spoken exchange from the higher quality bootleg, using our trusty AI, and here are the results:
Unfortunately the AI didn't pick out the "oh God, fuck it" line but this section is very clear. And we don't think these voices are any of John, Paul or George.
Which means, one of them might be Stuart! It would be so exciting to find a recording of Stuart's voice. Current received wisdom is that none exists.
We reckon Mike is more likely than anyone to be running the tape machine, as he was only occasionally contributing drumming. The latter voice is the one that sounds more like Mike to us. So we believe Stuart says "turn the tape off", and Mike says "it's just ordinary".
What do you think?

Arson cat's owner also likes fire but they make sure to do it safely.
Both of them sit and watch the fire in the fireplace during winter.
+ their human messes with matches and has many little matchboxes.

//So the episode for episode 75 (The Narrow Place) is Black Eyes by David Wirsig, which…
It’s on my Kevin playlist because it works for him except for one teeny tiny flaw: in 11th grade when the Pandemic first started, I listened to it on repeat, I loved it, I was vibing with it. At the same time I was studying Tintin for my French classes. Can you guess where it’s going? If your answer is “I accidentally pavloved myself to associate this song and Tintin” then you would be right!
