WE GOT A SEWING MACHINE THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING DAY FUCKING EVER

It's an old majestic beast....a sewing machine from like... Decades ago, and it's sturdy and heavy to show it!! Came with it's instructional kit and a spool of brown thread, as well as an entire box of needles, screwdrivers, parts to switch out or use in repair, glue, etc.

The elderly woman who sold it to us at the garage sale said she bought it when she was 18, for like 280 dollars or something, and used it every day until recently when she finally adjusted to a newer model; she never thought she'd give it up but eventually she did move on. She sold it to us for 20$ and walked us through everything included, and told us that the only problem is a piece that needs to be glued back on because someone else borrowed the machine and broke it off, which she put in the box in it's own tiny Ziploc bag. she told me to oil it and to study up on the book it came with and I was like YES MA'AM I WILL ABSOLUTELY. I will treat this machine well...it is a gentle mythical creature I must tenderly care for....

Moving on from hand sewing into the ULTIMATE FINAL FORM of sewing machine operation. Very epic. I will be making so many arm warmers and mini dresses and skirts once I'm used to it, although I should probably start with just sewing into a square of fabric for practice and then stuffed animals since I'm used to those. Repairing rips should also be easier probably- Seán hand-sewed a pillowcase shut where it ripped the other night actually :0 he did it because the tag was bothering me since it was poking through the rip and couldn't be tucked inside the pillowcase until he fixed it. Other family members have been sorting through the belongings of a deceased family member and the question comes my way of 'do you want her sewing stuff or should we just bin it?'

'Oh yeah, just bin it' said no craft inclined person ever

So I'm now in possession of two bonus boxes of mysterious and unknown content

This one is a small and slightly greasy feeling Tupperware box of unknown age

Contents: 11 reels of sewing thread of varying vintages and brands, some likely older than I am, and a travel type sewing kit in a clear plastic wallet complete with mini scissors, needles, and a tape measure

This one reel appears to have a tiny bit of surface mould, but I'm hoping it'll clean up with no issues since it appears so minor. I'll separate it from the rest and see how it goes

This box is much larger than the first

Here we have pins, needles, safety pins, scissors, 3 sewing machine reels, pencils, buttons, a pieces of tailors chalk, various bits of elastic, and two other items

One is this 'sewers switchblade', a thread/fabric cutter consisting of a razor blade held in a folding case that makes it's own blade cover and handle

And the other is this small bullet shaped emergency sewing kit which contains a thimble (in need of a good clean) a strip of felt holding 3 sewing needles, and two small reels of black and white thread

Also in the box are this assortment of machine and hand needles, some hooks and eyes, white bias binding and two well used crochet hooks of as yet unknown size

And under all of that are 35 reels of sewing thread of varying vintages and brands

Idk just how old some of these supplies are, but this reel of thread has a Woolworths price sticker on it and not only did Woolworths shut it's UK stores in Dec 2008/Jan 2009, but with the older logo on the sticker and a price of 20p marked on it I'm pretty sure it predates that closure by a broad margin

This small case was also in the bottom of the box with the thread reels

Tsukasa is either your best friend or worst enemy, you can pick. sometimes he’s just overbearing, very talkative, very loud. but other times you find yourself looking for, in your words, a ’menace’ to hang out with. he’s fun to be around, Tsukasa doesn’t mind you at all, and finds you intriguing to be honest. the two of you butt heads sometimes, because you two always have something snippy to say.

Emu is a ray of sunshine, every room she bursts into, the atmosphere immediately becomes brighter. you thought that she was another one you couldn’t bear to be with. but Emu is so kind, and so bubbly you can’t help but feel happier yourself. haven't actually talked much about the istj album so here's my current ranking from fave to least fave (subject to change, of course!):

and a mini review:

it's pretty much a no-skip album! except maybe pretzel for me, i find it a little obnoxious :/ overall i really like this musical direction nct dream is taking, with a few more "dark" songs than they usually have. there seems to be a theme across istj, poison, and sos-- they all sing about some sort of toxic yet irresistible lover ("glamorous, dangerous", "poison in my mind, destruction in my mind", "even if it hurts me i just endlessly over and over again go towards you"). it's cool to hear a more dramatic and moody tone from nct dream, and i think they pull it off really well. i really hope they pursue it further in future albums. i also really loved the sweetness of broken melodies and like we just met, they have that "nct dream" feeling to me, like romantic but in a very genuine and heartfelt way. yogurt shake feels like the next "life is still going on", with the cute xylophone. as for the title track, i think it's excellent. the opening instrumental reminds me of a sewing machine actually. it's a bit of a frenetic song, the tempo is SO FAST. but i think it works in their favor! the song feels really fresh. i think the vocal and rap sections are in exactly the right places, and the transitions between the two are actually a lot more seamless than some of their other songs imo. from the live performances, i sense the song is technically quite difficult. not just in terms of high notes or whatever, but the vocal techniques are different than usual (I'm not an expert here lol this is just what i observe), like renjun's bridge part seems a lot more belt-y than I'm used to from him, and the prechorus is delicate and complicated. the weak spots for me are in the overall narrative concept. the lyrics barely make sense, and i suspect it's not just a lost-in-translation thing. it's not a very relatable song (then again I'm not sure any of dream's title tracks are? but i want to hold them to that higher standard i know they're capable of). I'll talk about the music video in another post bc i fear this is getting rambly as it is!

i still think hello future holds first place for me in terms of best collection of tracks in nct dream's discography. but that's a really really tough album to beat.

Simple Slow Fashion :: taking out a too-tiny mini skirt

Picture this: you are searching through a pile of second hand clothing and find something super cute but ... way too small.

A couple of months ago I was in this exact predicament when a friend gifted me a pile of clothes that no longer fit her, or were in need of repair in some way. One item in the pile was this white mini skirt that had shrunk & shrunk over the years, making it unwearable to either of us.

Looking at this skirt I had a vision of what it could become with a little needle work. I saw myself taking out this skirt in a visible   (and hopefully) fashionable way by adding panels of floral fabric on either side. So, I selected this and a few other items from the pile and took them home to be mended, up-cyled, or totally transformed and thus, fuel for this and future mending tutorials I will be sharing with the tumblr crafting community!

We have all heard of "taking in" clothing, especially in the context of hand-me-downs from older siblings. In this tutorial however, I want to do the opposite: "take out" this skirt and gift it to my younger sister.

She in return was the model in the pictures you will see throughout this post. Thanks Jana!

Step One ::

To begin we must do the most difficult part --- cutting up a perfectly good garment in the hopes of improving it. It is really important to plan well before taking scissors to clothing. As I want to add to the structure of this garment rather than taking it down to scraps, I was careful to leave the whole front of the skirt as is.

That is to say: to embark on this mend cut just behind the seam of the front of the fabric and keep the front pockets intact.

I did this by first marking with a pin where I wanted to cut then turning the skirt inside out so that I could clearly see the in-seam. Cut carefully, please!

Step Two ::

Now, I needed to add the extra panels to each side that will widen the skirt. Ideally, you would be making this alteration for yourself, or have the model nearby from whom you could measure just how much to add. My sister was far away while I worked on this skirt so I had to guess-estimate how much to add. It turned out I was pretty close but now wish I had added just a quarter inch or so more to each panel. Oh well!

Remember, the hips are a particularly curvy area of the body so you will likely need to add a bit of a curve to these panels. More than likely the edge of the front and back of the skirt will have a bit of curve to them from which to guide the shape of the panels.

Step Three ::

Now, sew! You can either sew by hand or with a machine. I did a combination of both because some sections of the skirt had many layers and I didn't want to force my machine.

I suggest trying on the skirt throughout the process. I wasn't totally sure how much fabric to add to each side and solutioned this by making panels extra wide and adapting as I worked on this skirt. I am about the same size as my sister but it would be best to have exact measurements of the person you are tailoring this for.

Take note that denim clothing often have little metal studs to hold the pockets together, these will definitely break a needle on a sewing machine if you try to go over one.

Better be safe & slow than sorry and sew around the pockets by hand.

Step Four ::

Optional, but fun.

I wanted to add a little bit more presonalization to this project and replaced the tags with one of my own design to match the panels I had added to each side.

And, here it is! From way too small to a perfect fit:

I am very pleased with how this turned out and so was my sister who has a deep love for 1990's and early 2000's fashion. Normally I am very shy about modeling my designs so I do appreciate her love of being in front of the camera. She was also kind enough to model my mending kits!

Throughout this entire project I found my handy sewing kit to be very helpful. In fact, I use my kit in just about every mending or upcycling project ... and if you are interested in acquiring one of your own, you can find one in my shop.

WHAT HAVE U BEEN DOING AT SCHOOL BTW IF I MAY ASK,,,, EVERYTHING U SENT ME THAT ONE TIME WAS SO COOL ID LOVE 2 HEAR ABT IT IF UR WILLING 2 SHARE !!!!

SO. first year we got seven disciplines to learn plus a theater history course. in lighting we learned about the history of stage lighting and how they used to dim lights in a really fucked up way with salt water that got so many technicians killed and we learned how to properly hang a source 4 light fixture on a big metal pipe.

in audio we've just been doing physics review of how sound works but its ok because after the mini quiz on that we get to do actual fun stuff like setting up sound systems

props class has been moved to later in the year :(( i saw our teacher's portfolio and that shit is crazy im looking forward to it

paint!! basically just set painting, the class where you take the physical constructions given to you by the carpentry class and you make em look cool. i made a pounce pattern and learned a few techniques for making different textures

carpentry is the designing, planning and assembly of physical set pieces, i got to use a chop saw and staple gun today to start making a theater flat :]]

wardrobe!!!!!!! best one yet mostly because we get to do so much also its just plain fun, learned how to thread a sewing machine and sew a few patterns, then did a straight seam, topstitch, flat felled, and french seam today :]]

stagecraft is the stage management course where we learn all abt the industry n shit last week we reviewed a bunch of terminology and did our required work safety training stuff

theatre history is epic our homework was to watch a play called indecent which is the story of an older play, god of vengeance, a yiddish play with a lesbian romance

Saturday Six (Stuff)

The trip to the coast last week was not the best, but it was good to see my friend, and a bit of the ocean, if nothing else. And at least, in the end, my sewing machine got fixed. And the passes were pretty clear for driving. A few positives anyway.♡(•ི̛ᴗ•̛)ྀ

My cat Socks is really sick. I can't handle losing another pet so soon after losing KittyMeow in November.（ﾉ´д｀）

The garage I'll be working in is basically all set up and organized. It needs a little fine tuning, but we're ready to go. Good thing, since Monday we start working on booths for another restaurant here in town.೭੧(❛〜❛✿)੭೨

I haven't really worked on my therapy homework like I should have. At least, not consciously. Challenging negative thoughts really doesn't come easy to me.(~_~;)

I can't believe we've had snow now for 5 months in a row. Wtffffff. If y'all don't believe climate change is real then I've got some bridges to sell you. (.﹒︣︿﹒︣.)

Meanwhile, Boots the Kitteh is getting more comfortable, and talkative. I got two whole meows this morning! That's amazing for my shy, ex-feral boy!₍˄ุ.͡˳̫.˄ุ₎ฅ˒˒

maybe i should've just asked my folks to get me a new sketchbook for christmas instead of electing to wait until our post-christmas shopping day to buy one. but then again! after my parents bought me a mini sewing machine like two christmases ago that i proceeded to Never Use, it is perhaps for the best that i Don't ask them to spend their money on my creative endeavors, because my artistic passion comes and goes like the wind.
