How Good the RvB Main Cast is at Cooking, Ranked from Best to Worst
1. Donut
Donut gives off the vibe of one of those gay men with a baking channel on YouTube. This man's out here rolling up to the red team monthly dinner club with frenched rack of lamb with a pistachio mint crust and wine accompaniment, then earl grey souffle with creme anglaise for dessert. He spends hours experimenting with new and interesting ingredients. Remy Ratatouille, send-you-back-to-rural-France ass man. Donut's food fucks hard and everyone knows it.
2. Grif
You really think my man Grif loves food as much as he does and doesn't know how to make it? C'mon. He doesn't, like, relish the act of cooking as much as he does having a good plate of food at the end of it. And he's not typically much for sharing. But my guy makes a damn good short rib and bechamel lasagna. Give him the day to let something slow cook, and god damn.
3. Wash
Wash has been living off of MREs for probably his entire adult life, but I feel like he's got a few dishes he can whip out for a date night, or if he's feeling fancy. He knows how to read a recipe, and he has a pretty good idea of what flavors go together to make something good. He probably has a really nice papardelle with vinho verde sauce that he has sitting around in the back of his head for special occasions.
4. Tucker
Okay, Tucker isn't a bad cook by any means, ok? He's great with breakfast food specifically. It's just that he isn't especially fancy about it. He was probably, like, a line cook at Denny's in high school, so all his food tastes like food you would get at Denny's. Which isn't a bad thing! You would just never call Denny's "fine dining". He has his niche, and he does it well, and he never feels even a little bit inclined to do anything different or better.
5. Church (Alpha)
Church isn't much of a foodie right off the bat, but someone's got to pack Caboose's lunch, and he ends up learning how to cook fairly well after that. After a certain point, he figures out how to make things from scratch--mostly things like chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, pancakes.
6. Simmons
I feel like Simmons mostly lives off of shit like green smoothies and homemade granola. Like, hardcore, low carb, vegan, all organic, high protein diet. And, like, it doesn't taste BAD. But it definitely isn't the kind of thing you bring to the red team dinner club. He does make a really nice sunbutter brownie that he has to hide from Grif.
7. Caboose
Caboose has been banned from using any objects in the kitchen that involve a heat source--which isn't HIS fault! How was he supposed to know that you're supposed to take the spoon OUT of the mac and cheese before putting it in the microwave? That's just a recipe for a cold spoon! Anyways, he manages just fine without the microwave, thank you very much. He can make ants on a log like it's nobody's business. Cleaning up afterwards is another matter entirely.
8. Carolina
Carolina is one of the most competent individuals you will ever meet. She could kill you in under a minute, in 30 different ways, and that's just with her bare hands. The fourth time Sarge tries to recruit her into red team is by inviting her to the monthly dinner club. She shows up empty handed, and when Donut very politely asks what she brought, she replies that it's very interesting that they expected the only woman on the team to go all out with cooking. They move on. Carolina spent 5 hours in the kitchen this afternoon trying to figure out how to use the oven. But they don't need to know that.
9. Tex
Now, listen. Tex can't be called a bad cook, precisely, because that would require she cook for herself or others. Which is something she does not do. That's what Church is for, isn't it?
10. Sarge
Sarge refuses to step foot in a kitchen after the fifth shouting match about how flamethrowers are not a universally recognized kitchen appliance.
11. Church (Epsilon)
One time, while blue team is shooting the wind, Caboose asks Epsilon what his favorite breakfast food is. Instead of calling Caboose a dumbass, as per usual, he instead goes into extensive detail about how he eats computer keys like cereal. Caboose tries it. It isn't very good.

how the FUCK am I supposed to change the lightbulbs on the twenty-foot ceilings in this apartment????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ALL of the overhead lights in this apartment are like this. (there are a handful of hanging lights that I can change myself.) I understand that there's some kind of grippy lightbulb changer suction cup or basket on a pole you can get at Lowe's or Amazon but a lot of these lights aren't normally recessed, they're beneath covers. And a lot of them are already burned out. (I can also tell that several have normal bulbs behind the cover, which means they were replaced before with the wrong kind of lightbulbs -- the one in the laundry room has two regular bulbs, one burned out, and there's literally no way I can get at it. I'm not climbing on a sixteen-foot ladder, I will die.)
*dubiously* I guess this is what handymen are for. (I mean, in a college town I'm sure I can always hire an enterprising college student to do various things, but perhaps not for the lights. I'm sure one of them would buy my excess mattress, though.)
I'd honestly be willing to try the lightbulb changer on a pole, but I'm not sure I can physically manage it with all of these lights, and the ones behind covers (which includes both bathrooms and the laundry room) I definitely can't. Also I guess I'll send another plaintive text to my property manager. (I am still trying to figure out where trash goes.)
this is a recently renovated apartment, but it is immediately evident to me that the reno was designed by (a) a man who was (b) COMICALLY taller than me (not hard, I'm 5'2.5"), (c) probably left-handed, and (d) didn't actually cook much despite the nice kitchen. (I do have SUBSTANTIALLY more counter space than in the Decatur house, but it would actually be difficult not to have more counter space than in that house -- I dealt with it by having a kitchen cart.)
on the other hand, there are FIVE MILLION outlets in this apartment. so it has that going for it. literally, from where I am sitting in the not-quite-open plan kitchen/dining/living room I can see thirteen outlets and I know there are two more in the office nook (built-in desk!). on the third hand it is a second-story walk-up and if I'd known the stair situation I'm not sure I would have rented it. (I had a video tour but didn't realize the stair situation until I got here.) probably the restaurant below also has twenty-foot ceilings.
this is the kind of apartment that would be a few grand in a city (I looked up the rent for an equivalent apartment in Decatur and it was $3-5K a month), but this is small town South Dakota, so while it's more expensive than my duplex in Decatur, it's not actually that much more expensive, especially considering that it's larger, new appliances, washer/dryer, 2 full bathrooms, and parking. also I wanted an apartment that made me feel like a Real Adult Professor and not a graduate student, especially if I had to live in rural South Dakota. (As I have bitched about endlessly, I didn't want to leave Atlanta and I didn't want to leave the Deep South; I'm one of the people who actually wants to live in the South (apparently rare? at least of people I know at my previous institution who were all like 'I don't know how I ended up here') and I do expect to go back on the market in an attempt to move back, TT job or not, unless I absolutely fall in love with this school/town. though if I absolutely hate living here, I can move to one of the nearby cities and commute (there's one half an hour away over the state line, and one an hour away in the same state). but like, I wanted to stay in the South and the universe said the best it could do was South Dakota.
but also jesus. this light situation makes me nervous. I do own floor lamps (because the Decatur house actually had terrible lighting), but come on, man. also I haven't yet found where I packed the cover for one of the floor lamps. I also can't find the bulbs for my regular non-floor lamps. found the bulbs for one of my floor lamps because they take E12 chandelier bulbs and they were packed in one of my 'random things' boxes. I will be unpacking for...a while.

HL headcanon : life in the 19th century
I was doing some historical research in order to make a family tree (for an OC for a fanfiction in the Hogwarts Legacy universe) because I'm a stickler for historical detail (It's not at all because I'm a history professor) and I thought it might be nice to share this for anyone who's interested.
Tumblr media
Social transformations of the 19th century
HL takes place at the end of the Victorian era in UK, a historical period marked by the Industrial Revolution. Thanks to this revolution, many transformations appeared and developed in Europe:
The railway network in UK in the 1840s (at the time of HL, the Hogwarts Express was still something new and must have caused a scandal among the purebloods, who were no doubt scandalised that one of the latest Muggle technical innovations was being used to take students to the castle).
The gradual disappearance of proto-industry and the decline of workshops, particularly in the textile industry, which were replaced by the emergence of factories (spinning mills) in the towns. In addition to economic and social upheaval (emergence of a new social class: the working class), the Industrial Revolution was marked by a major rural exodus. People left the countryside to go to the cities to find work.
Cities then grow by welcoming a whole new population (whole families leave the countryside for the city). To meet this demographic challenge, we note the emergence of working-class neighborhoods that are developing in large cities. These neighborhoods are usually located next to factories.
The living conditions in his neighborhoods were not the greatest luxury (insalubrity, pollution of factories, poverty wages, etc.). It is enough to read some social surveys carried out at the time (such as that of Villermé in 1840 for France) to realize that living in the nineteenth century marked by this industrial revolution was not necessarily the best. In fact, the city of London was so polluted that a permanent fog hung over the city. In 1858, The Great Stink took place, which was the origin of the installation of sewage systems throughout the city (here again it can be assumed that in HL, the system of pipes to evacuate waste water from toilets and toilets is almost a novelty (toilets having become standard from 1840)).
In short, all the transformations linked to the Industrial Revolution during the 19th century suggest that life expectancy at that time must not have been very high.
Life expectancy
For my OC, I chose to make her a member of the French wizarding family Rosier. And then being French myself, that’s it.
The situation in France in 1891 was essentially the same as in England (the Industrial Revolution having spread throughout Europe, what happened in England was observed elsewhere).
I managed to find graphs showing the evolution of life expectancy in France. I guess it was more or less the same for the UK.
Tumblr media
Graph showing life expectancy at birth in Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria. In the 19th century, life expectancy was around 43 years.
Source : Swiss Life, La révolution de la longévité, 29 mars 2016.
Tumblr media
Graph showing life expectancy in France from 1720 to 2020. The blue curve shows the life expectancy of men and the orange curve that of women. Here too the average is around 43 years.
Source: INED (French national institute for demographic studies)
Motherhood in the 19th century
To create the family tree, I had to look up the average age at which women gave birth. As life expectancy is low, women give birth at higher rates. In addition, the infant mortality rate was high at the time (medicine wasn't really that good, plus questionable hygiene standards).
Tumblr media
Table showing the average age of childbirth among single women. We note that during the second half of the 19th century, women gave birth most at ages 20 and 24.
Tumblr media
Women in the 1830s had their first child at age 23 (compared to around 24 in 1870), their second at 26 (compared to 27 in 1870). We also note that in 1830, women had more children than women in the 1870s/1880s (10% of women had a 3rd child in 1830 compared to 6% in 1870; 6% of women in 1830 had a 4th child compared to 1% in 1870).

Tumblr media
Sorry if the documents are in French, but I am French and I am used to doing my research in French university databases.
I hope this could have been useful for those who write fiction in the HL universe and who want to remain consistent with the society of the time. (Well then I think that wizard families lived longer because magic had to help with health problems linked to pollution or other. Thanks to Wiggenweld potions)
I hope my English is clear, I mostly use a translator.

Hello, I’m coming to you in search of some advice. I’m a recent university graduate with a BA in anthropology and a strong focus in archaeology. I’ve got three years experience in my field in both CRM and collections management in museums. I’ve recently moved to a small town and having the hardest time finding a job. I’m either told that they’ll hold my application for “future jobs,” or I’m told to volunteer.
I know that this is a bit of a broad question, but I thought that I’d might ask. What would you do if you were in my situation? What would be the best way to find a job and research jobs for small/rural communities?
Hi anon, I'm going to apologize in advance, because the answer I have probably isn't the answer you want to hear. But I'm going to be honest with you about the job market because it seems like maybe you didn't get this message during your education or work experience.
If you want a job in anthropology/archaeology beyond shovel bumming or interning, you pretty much need to go to grad school. The vast majority of positions at museums, collections, archives, etc. will require a Master's degree at the very least. With any of those "future jobs" organizations are telling you about, you'll have to compete with people who do have that degree, and while it's great that you have the work experience you do, that's not going to be enough.
Additionally, if you want a job in anthropology/archaeology, you need to be willing to move for the job. I'm not surprised to hear that you're having trouble finding a job in a small town—most opportunities are going to be in cities with facilities that have the resources to hire people to process collections. I would advise you to cast a wider net.
If I was in your situation, I would:
Start googling for archaeology jobs in [broad geographic area] and in [subject of interest] and see what requirements they're looking for
Start looking into graduate programs for the coming year that will help you eventually meet those requirements
Find a local historical society to volunteer at in the meantime
Consider going back to CRM short term or look for employment outside of anthropology for the near future.
I know this is probably discouraging to hear, especially if no one has ever given this talk to you before. I want to emphasize that it is still totally possible for you to find a job in this field, it's just going to require some recalculation on your part. This is totally doable.
But it's also completely fine if you decide that's not the right path for you right now or ever. An anthropology degree can be used for lots of things besides working in anthropology itself. You should be able to apply yourself to anything broadly people/culture/social dynamics.

moving from mexico to the u.s. was a huge culture shock for him, especially because he really didn't know any english. he often got bullied and faced discrimination, but luckily he wasn't the only latino/ hispanic kid around and was quickly accepted by them
he got especially close to the crusso family, bonding with the boys and eventually working up the courage to ask cece out
their relationship is sort of life-defining for him as he gained a new purpose in life. he felt like he gained a new family (which he desperately wanted since leaving his behind) but also a new role, assigning himself as cece's protector and provider, making the eventual decision to propose to her a natural one despite their ups and downs
life was good. he was about to be promoted to management and he was best friend was going to be his brother and most importantly, he was about to marry the love of his life, it was the happiest time in his life
then his uncle passed away, which was devastating since the two had grown extremely close from spending so much time together. no longer having her son to look after, his grandmother felt a lack of purpose in life so her health deteriorated. all this pulled his attention away from work, causing him to be looked over for the promised promotion.
everything added up and caused him to believe it was a sign that he should call the wedding off
he never expected cece to disappear. he had fully believed that it would be like all the other times they "broke up" and he would eventually be able to win her back with gifts and pretty words once he got back on his feet, but with her gone, he became even more of mess
eventually, he was able to get where she was out of one of family members and he made the decision to go looking for her
he's been in nyc for about a week at this point and he doesn't know if he'll stay, but he's determined to get his girl back, so whatever it takes. wish him luck
HEAD CANNONS
since he works with luxury cars, ricky likes to take whatever car is staying at the shop out for joyrides when he can, so it's likely you never see him in the same car twice
wears a gold cuban link chain at all times
has cool chicano style tattoos and a large back piece of la virgin
has a bit of a complex from leaving him family behind at a young age and having to help care for his disabled uncle. very much of the mind that he can't be loved unless he's providing for his loved ones, like he himself is not enough :(
has horrible vision, though typically wears his contacts so it's very unlikely anyone outside of his family or very close friends have seen him wearing glasses
once he finds a place with space to host people, he'll likely invite friends and people he gets along with to come grill on the weekends. he's very family oriented and being away from them, he'll want to build his own found family
he came to the states young enough that his accent is basically non-existent, though he does have trouble with certain words and idioms. it's in his writing that you can really see that he's an esl kid

Free "Big City Greens" AU ideas if anyone wants 'em
Superhero AU: The Greens are a family of vigilante superheroes, starting with Alice who became one to protect country folk during Big City's expansion but eventually became a hero for everyone. Bill finally takes up the mask when his ma retires, and Cricket and Tilly INSIST on being his sidekicks. Remy and Gloria eventually get brought into the fold as well, with Remy being the rich orphan/adopted son of Vasquez (who, naturally, is another vigilante superhero in this universe) and Gloria desperately wanting to be one of Bill's sidekicks as well (because let's face it, even dangerous superhero work is still better than working in customer service). Chip Whistler, meanwhile, starts off as a Lex Luthor-type, secretly hating heroes and fighting them from the shadows while still trying to keep a clean public persona, but eventually he like in canon he just goes Full Joker.
Rural Remingtons (Swap AU): After Remy's anxiety and self-confidence issues significantly worsen with middle school (I imagine he's 13-14 in this instead of 10, and while he had casual friends he never had a super-close best friend like in canon), his parents decide to move their family (including Vasquez) to the Country to give their boy plenty of space to relax and enjoy himself. Coincidentally, they happen to become neighbors with the Green family, who are more than happy to show these new city folks the ropes as they get used to living in the country. With a new best friend and a whole new culture to get used to, Remy indeed manages to grow and learn quite a bit about himself. Vasquez, meanwhile, may or may not be starting to form a close friendship of his own with the farmer next door.
Any fan artists or fanfic writers, feel free to use either of these AU ideas, just link me to your stuff when you do pls!

29th March 1958 saw the death of Sir William Burrell.
In 1876 William entered the firm at the age of 15, and on his father’s death in 1885 he and his eldest brother George took over the management. the firm was already prospering, but under their shrewd direction it reached a position of international standing in worldwide tramping and in ship management.
Burrell was a collector from an early age, buying his first painting when aged only 15, but it was Glasgow’s industrial ascendancy that would allow him to continue financing his passion for art, and the added success of the firm his father founded.
Building and buying ships when world markets were weak, Burrell built up and sold two great ocean-going fleets, providing him with the wealth needed to search the world for art and antiquities. Even better, his global shipping contacts meant he knew where and when certain treasures were being auctioned.
Burrell was far from alone in this passion, and as his fellow Glasgow industrialists grew wealthy, they too invested in art – both ancient and modern – to show off to their friends. Where Burrell differed, however, was that he was no show-off.
He was a serious collector, with wide-ranging interests and passions. By 1900 he had become a respected collector in the fields of late Gothic and early Renaissance European art and late 19th century French art.
In 1901, Burrell was one of the largest donors of artworks to the Glasgow International Exhibition. This was an event which left an indelible mark on the city, with the opening that year of the much-loved Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. In 1927, Burrell was knighted for services to art and for his public work.
But Burrell was certainly no snob when it came to his collection. He was a believer in free education for all and wanted the people of his home city to be able to access his fine collection. It’s for this reason that, in 1944, he donated his entire collection to his home city – a collection that contained more than 9,000 items at the time.
Shortly afterwards, Hector Hetherington, then Principal of Glasgow University, famously said of Burrell’s collection that it was:
“One of the greatest gifts ever made to any city in the world”.
By the time of his death in 1958, Burrell had been collecting for 75 years - and what a collection it is. From Chinese and early Islamic ceramics to Late Gothic and Early Renaissance works of art from Northern Europe, including tapestries, stained glass, sculpture, arms and armour, architecture and furniture.
Burrell’s collection takes visitors on a tour of 6,000 years of world history, connecting them to the people who made the exquisite works and to the people who have owned them down the centuries; making exciting new connections through time and place.
At the time of his gift, Burrell had stipulated that any new gallery must be 16 miles from the city centre. This was partly because he believed that a rural setting would show the works to their best advantage, but also to place them far away from possible damage by atmospheric pollution caused by Clydeside's heavy industries and tenement chimneys. By the time of Burrell's death in 1958, a suitable site had still to be found.
That problem was solved in 1966, when Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald gifted her family’s 360-acre Pollok Estate to the City of Glasgow. Although a mere four miles from the city centre, it seemed the perfect location for the vast Burrell Collection.
That said, it took a further 17 years, and an international design competition, before architect Sir Barry Gasson’s £20m building opened to the public.
The combination of exceptional art and architecture set within one of Europe’s largest urban green spaces was an immediate success, described by The Glasgow Herald as ‘a magical mystery tour and an aesthetic event rolled into one’. The Burrell Collection has since been a key driver in Glasgow’s transformation from a place of post-industrial decline to one of the great cities of culture.
In October 2016 the building closed for a major £68.25 million refurbishment. The Burrell Collection reopened today, its greatly expanded spaces promise improved access, understanding and appreciation of one of the world’s most extraordinary personal collections.

Hello there 💖
So I have a few questions for your videos :
Ho long have you been studying Japanese ? What made you want to do it ?
Congratulations for going to Nagoya ! The city is really pretty ! How did you manage to get to go to school there ?
Do you want to get a job in Japan or in another country (related to Japan in a way or another) ?
How do you film your YouTube videos ? What do you use to edit them ?
Sorry if it’s a lot of questions, I really like your account and your videos
Lots of love 💖
@momoxstudies
im so sorry i never got around to making a video from this! i really planned on it, but life got in the way…
(/// ̄ ̄///)
i have been studying japanese since i was 16, during covid, and i just turned 21 last week! soooo,,, 5 years? holy fuck. ive only been studying in actual classes since i was 18 tho, so about 3 years of actual studying. and i still know essentially nothing <3 i think it was a combination of meeting japanese people online, watching anime, and reading manga. i was super into all that shit from a young age and i initally started learning japanese as a hobby with no intention of ever living in japan or anything, and it just evolved from there. no regerts tho (๑˘︶˘๑)
i got to study abroad at chukyo university in nagoya through my university! they partner w chukyo, so i did an exchange program. i fucking LOVED nagoya and would recommend it to everyone. nagoya gets a lot of hate i think, but i think it is a really great place to live. city vibes, i think there is a decent amount to do, but its not rlly overcrowded or overpopulated like tokyo osaka or kyoto. and the more rural areas of gifu/aichi surrounding it are beautiful. overall loved my experience and met some amazing people there.
the ultimate goal is to live in japan later on down the line, but until then, im not really sure what my plans are! i think japan is a beautiful country with a super rich culture and i can definitely see myself settling down/raising kids there, but i am also super career-oriented so i would like to focus on that first. ideally, id like to work for a japanese company with american branches, or work for an american company with branches in japan. something wherre i can go back and forth ! but im also leaving room for any unexpected opportunities when planning my future
i film my youtube videos with my iphone 12 pro max! tho the most recent vid is filmed on Z****** camera, as well as one im editing now. i used FCP and capcut to edit! though recently i prefer capcut cuz i hate FCPs new user interface
thank you for all the compliments and interest in my life!! u are the best mwah mwah

Some OC refs I finished lately!
Short descriptions under read more
Barbara White - merle working line border collie, late 20s. She used to be full of herself and a real daredevil. Her parents expected her to become a professional sprinter, and put their all into making sure it happens. Unfortunately, Barb was in a car accident when she was 17, which ended in a shattered leg. This ended the dream of doing sports professionally. She still continues to limp, and has to use a cane. She also got much more careful and anxious after the accident. Barb changed her path to become a teacher's assistant at a primary school. Is completely no-contact with her parents. Dates Seth. Finds Hector annoying, but also thinks of him as of an older brother she never had
Seth King - liver German shepherd, early 30s. Very easygoing and friendly, he makes friends with everyone he meets. Comes from an upper middle class family, never really worked hard, which brought bad grades in school, as well as inability to study hard enough at university. Somehow, he managed to get into a magical school, but dropped out after a year. He then chose to join the police force, which he turned out to excel at and quickly got promoted to a detective. Is still very close to his parents. Dates Barbara. Best friends with Hector.
Hector Page - smooth collie, mid 30s. Loud, brash, arrogant. Came from a rural town, he was very close to his parents and two younger sisters, until he came out to them at 17. He was kicked out of his house and spent the next year working and couch surfing at his friends' houses until graduation. He managed to get a loan and get into medical school, where he met and befriended Seth. He graduated med school with honours and specialised in oncology. He has a comfortable job at a hospital now, allowing him to slowly pay his loan back and indulge in his interest in fashion. Has a strained relationship with his sisters and tries to stay no-contact with parents, who continue to try to get to his money. Best friends with Seth. Enjoys annoying Barb, who he thinks of as a little sister.

Conclusion: building working-class struggle for a better world
The organisational power and strategic location of the Nigerian trade union movement, representing over five million workers organised both in the private and state sectors, should be the point of departure for building a counter movement among the broader Nigerian working class allied to the peasantry and other poor sections of society.
The strength of the Nigerian working class both in white collar and blue collar jobs should be translated into a viable political and social movement with a clear agenda for change — a movement that can provide an alternative to the current state system that is ruinous to society. To struggle to fix the current state system would continue to be an exercise in futility. Even the best politicians are powerless to change the state. We dare not tinker with reform that fails! Rather, we need systemic change that can guarantee equality, fraternity, self-management and socialisation of the common wealth guided by a bottom-up approach to decision making. We need a labour movement guided by the following dictum:
“…a multicultural and international movement with a profound feminist impulse, a movement with an important place in union, worker and rural struggles, prizing reason over superstition, justice over hierarchy, self-management over state power, international solidarity over nationalism, a universal human community over parochialism and separatism — anarchism and syndicalism is this and much more” (van der Walt & Schmidt, 2008: 10).
This is our appeal, and that is our message as we commemorate this May Day, in a country in which the storm clouds gather over humanity — but in which the hope of a better future can break through, if we organise. May Day began as an example of globalisation-from-below and it continues to be a rallying point for workers everywhere facing social and economic injustices some 120 years later.
Let us rally to it!

So there's a TTRPG work in progress meme going around and I've been tagged by @theresattrpgforthat and I love talking about my ideas! With the release of Giant of Light, I've got a few going, I'll borrow the cooking metaphor @bleongambetta came up with:
Front Burner (actively in progress, I know what I want the game to be, spend some time in the document at least once a week):
-Free Lunch for Magic Users
Fantasy post-post-apocalypse in rural New England. Players are fast talking conmen with a teaspoon of magical talent, inspiration from Fallout and Discworld.
-4AM in Santa Carla
Lost Boys game where you're one of the background vampires. Hopefully a one-page game.
-Hero of Tomorrow
Superman hack of GoL.
Back Burner (I think about it often, I make notes when I have an epiphany, but major mechanics are still open):
-Demon Castle Dracula
My tribute to Castlevania; a mapping/exploration game using a Tarot deck.
-Sentai Squads (title subject to change)
A competitive game based on Super Sentai/Power Rangers. Each player manages a team that's trying to be the most popular team while also saving the day.
-V/H/Essence
Be a movie monster! A thesis on Queerness and mental illness in modern America, also a bit of a World of Darkness deconstruction.
-Pegwarmers
Metafictional game about The Tranformers (or toylines in general); fight to make sure that you have enough fans that you're in the next reboot of the franchise!
-Journey to the Quest
Optimistic Shonen Jump adventure! Play as a powerful child overthrowing oppressive regimes with a card game battle system. Theoretically first in a trilogy.
Still on the Prep Station (I have an idea here, but probably one or two mechanics at most, several don't even have titles):
-plUnderworlds
GM-less existential adventure game about being the last survivor of a dead universe.
-Cooking Competition Game
Mario Kart meets Cutthroat Kitchen. Improvise a dish and mess with your opponents.
-Demonbrain
Anime combat game about having a spiritual parasite. Less JoJo's, more Venom if the symbiote was looking to escape.
-Wasted
"Hi, I'm Ishida Mitsunari and welcome to Jackass!" Time travellers are stuck in a deathless purgatory dimension where the odds no longer make sense.
-Fighting Game Game
Built to replicate my favorite mechanics from fighting games and in service to the wild, expansive lore of the best fighters.
13! Seems fine. I'm not tagging anyone else to do this, because everyone I know well enough in TTRPGs has either done it or has said they're trying to step back from new game design. But I'll answer basically any questions about any of these!

Spring 2023 Anime First Impressions
Below is a list of eight anime that I am watching this season, and my impressions of them so far. I'd also like to say I'm watching the second season of Mahoyome, but I don't think it's necessary to write about it, considering it's a sequel.
Oshi no Ko
Tumblr media
To say that Oshi no Ko is the anime to watch this season would be an understatement. The first episode, which has an extended runtime of 82 minutes, is quite possibly one of the best first episodes of an anime that I’ve ever seen. Of course, with around four times the time to air–Oshi no Ko had to justify its feature-length first episode. If it was just average, then what was the point? Thankfully, Oshi no Ko more than justifies the dramatic entrance. The sky-high average rating (89%), while a good omen, seemed like a bit much considering the show just started, but after finally watching it, I can understand why someone would rate it that high. I’m saving my rating until the anime finishes however.
The long run time is only part of why Oshi no Ko was so well received. The stylistic choices (a part brought over by the manga) set it apart from the onset. It really captures the vibe of what an ‘idol’ idealistically is. Considering that Hoshino Ai is the ideal idol, it’s a perfect match. Art isn’t what the only thing that Oshi no Ko has going for it. The story contained within the first episode is a whirlwind. It’s astounding that Oshi no Ko can contain so many various themes and time skips and still maintain to be gripping. It’s not easy for a show to be compelling while essentially being Rugrats at the same time. Oshi no Ko also ‘keeps it real’ in relation to the entertainment industry, and isn’t afraid to show the dark side of fandom. Wrap it all up together, and you have one the best first episodes to an anime in recent memory. Oshi no Ko is from the same mangaka that wrote Kaguya-sama: Love is War–I never got into Kaguya-sama, but Oshi no Ko had me drawn in within the first twenty minutes.
The synopsis for Oshi no Ko does it no favors–I had no idea what the show was going to be about from reading it, which, if you think about it, was actually a good thing. Maybe I’m just a moron. If you really care, you can read it here. As for the time being, it seems that the story has calmed down in the sense that time skips aren’t going to happen as frequently. I don’t know really since I’m an anime-only. With that comes the inevitable coming back down to earth, which is not all that surprising considering that not every episode can have the budget and runtime the first episode did. This isn’t Band of Brothers unfortunately. That being said, the fact that I was spoiled on the ending of the first episode and it still managing to be something that upset me says a lot about the quality of Oshi no Ko. If I had to pick one anime this season to watch, it would be this. It’s the only anime this season that I like enough to pick up the manga.
Skip to Loafer (Skip and Loafer)
Tumblr media
Mitsumi Iwakura is born to lead!...no wait, sorry, that sounds too presumptuous…Mitsumi Iwakura wants to lead the charge to make the world a better place…or at least her dinky rural hometown that doesn’t even have a train station. Mitsumi is already a straight-A student, but being from rural Japan, she needs to move to Tokyo if she wants any chance of achieving her goals. Before she attends Tokyo University and becomes a politician/bureaucrat, she moves to Tokyo to go to high school.
On her first day, she gets lost on her way to school in the Tokyo subway system. Being not accustomed to ‘city life’, her only saving grace is Sousuke Shima, fellow classmate, who is late as well. He offers to show her the way to their school, which is the beginning of their rather unlikely friendship.
Shima, who’s a former child actor and has the ‘aloof shoujo male lead’ thing down pat, finds comfort in being friends with someone like Mitsumi–someone who’s good-natured, albeit being very naive and a bit of a square as well. Their friendship, while seemingly unlikely, isn’t hamfisted in any sense. Skip and Loafer is a coming-of-age story that has left a smile on most viewers' faces, mine included. It’s an overused word, but Skip and Loafer has been genuinely wholesome so far, which is good since I don’t know if Mitsumi could handle being in a more melodramatic show. The anime sites seem to compare this to Kimi ni Todoke, which I understand at first glance–they’re both similar shows, but they aren’t clones. Mitsumi is a book-smart dunce–you know, like most teenagers that aspire to a future in politics. However, unlike most teenagers that aspire to a future in politics, Mitsumi is a good person, which is why someone like Shima and many others at Mitsumi’s new high school are friends with her. Skip and Loafer is a good watch.
Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School)
Tumblr media
Ganta Nakami suffers from insomnia, which causes him to act irritable and antisocial at school. One day, while scavenging cardboard boxes from the abandoned and ‘haunted’ Astronomy Club observatory, he finds Isaki Magari, sleeping inside a toppled locker inside the clubroom.
Magari, as it turns out, also has insomnia, and the observatory is her getaway. It’s the perfect place to hide away, since sounds from the outside world are blocked out, and because it has a reputation for being ‘haunted’, meaning that it most likely won’t get used as a hang-out spot by other students. Together, they decide to transform the vacant observatory into the perfect place to sleep…that is, until they get caught. In order to keep their ‘secret’ place, they restart the Astronomy Club.
For a slice-of-life, Insomniacs After School manages to be interesting while not having needless drama. The romance seems to be intended to be more of a slow burn–which is perfectly fine with me, considering there’s already romance anime I’m watching this season that has gotten to the point where the main couple is engaged. This anime, while sharing the same theme as Call of the Night, doesn’t share many other themes. The romance, while being a slow burn, does have an obvious path, unlike Call of the Night. I’m honestly really liking this show so far if not only because each episode I’ve seen so far has managed to be interesting in different ways. While Call of the Night was mainly about vampires, Insomniacs After School is going all in on Ganta and Magari taking astronomy seriously. Photography as well. Since I haven’t read any of the manga, I don’t know which of the themes will win out. One thing is that I’ll be watching, since I’ve really liked it so far.
Ao no Orchestra (The Blue Orchestra)
Tumblr media
Ao no Orchestra’s entry in this list is a miracle of modern technology. Due to it not being licensed to release in America, the only way of watching it right now is through watching fansubs. And not those ‘fansub’ groups that rip subtitles from Crunchyroll/Funimation/etc. and call it a day–this is the first time I’ve downloaded an anime from a ‘group’ that was formed ad-hoc for an anime in a very long time. It’s a shame too, since I think Ao no Orchestra deserves better than that.
Ao no Orchestra stars violin prodigy Hajime Aono, who stopped playing due to personal reasons. One day at school, he hears the sound of the violin being played horribly. He discovers that Ritsuko Akine is the one polluting the air with her noise. She uses the school infirmary as a practice room–a room that Aono is familiar with himself, being a frequent visitor. Through their mutual love for the violin, Aono finds himself being drawn back to playing. Akine, who is only a beginner, wants Aono to teach her how to play. Aono, who isn’t too thrilled by her forceful attempts to get him to play, nonetheless starts teaching her how to play.
Despite the show being uniquely difficult to obtain, it maintains to be worth the hassle. The British slang does take you by surprise, yes, but maybe if you wait enough, a company will license it and you can watch it on Crunchyroll. Or maybe you can wait until someone else decides to translate it. Or you could just learn Japanese, so you wouldn’t have to deal with this anyways, but that would be too much work. Ao no Orchestra
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen wo! (Konosuba: Megumin Edition)
Tumblr media
If you hated every other Konosuba character except for Megumin, are interested in her backstory, or just find the series funny, then Konosuba: Megumin Edition (calling it this because there’s no separate abbreviation for this spin-off and calling it  ‘Konosuba Season 3’ would be lying…wait, how about Konomegu? No? Okay…) is right up your alley.
This spin-off takes place a year before Kazuma and Aqua are isekaied into the Konosuba world and follows Megumin in her studies to be able to cast Explosion magic, an extremely offensive magic that has little utility other than blowing areas up into smithereens. Anyone whose seen Konosuba knows what I’m talking about. With Megumin is fellow Crimson Magic Clan member Yunyun, who shares a main role with Megumin and is together with her in being the two top students in their class.
Even if this is the first Konosuba-related thing you’ve watched, I believe that you’ll have a good time. It’s way less of a bait-and-switch than the first episode of Konosuba was. Pure comedy with none of the lewdness. Megumin is probably the funniest character in my opinion as well, making this a must watch.
Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru
Tumblr media
Imagine being dumped for a girl that your boyfriend met in a video game–Akane Kinoshita doesn’t have to! Being a novice gamer, her sour experience with the MMO Forest Of Savior (FOS) is almost enough to put her off of gaming forever…that is, until she meets Yamada; fellow guildmate who also happens to live in the same area as Akane. He’s also a pro gamer (in a non-descript FPS game), which makes him somewhat of a celebrity among gamers locally.
Yamada-kun is shaping up to be your prototypical shoujo anime–it’s something to watch if you’re into that sort of stuff. I’d like to see more about what Yamada does, being a ‘pro gamer’ and all, but I doubt we’ll ever get to see anything more than surface-level. It’s a shoujo anime, so the romance is what the people are here for. If it does that well, then there’s really nothing else it has to do. It is what it is.
Not much to say about the show since it’s pretty straightforward with what it is. I’m having a good time with it, and I’m not the target audience.
Kawaisugi Crisis! (Too Cute Crisis!)
Tumblr media
Too Cute Crisis! is a very straightforward anime–Liza Luna, who is a research scientist and a higher-up in the invading alien empire (I forgot the name of it) discovers Earth. She wants to destroy it, but not without doing reconnaissance first.
She arrives in Japan, where she is ‘attacked’ by the cuteness of Earth’s creatures. Liza is mesmerized by the cuteness of cats (and dogs too), so much so that it paralyzes and makes her docile to the cat she adopts. In all of her time conquering planets, she has never seen anything as cute as a cat before. The cuteness of an animal that can’t be controlled makes her believe that cats are the secret rulers of Earth…and she might just be right.
This is by far the most lighthearted show I’m watching this season–anything with cats or any other furry pets really is cheating! The fact that everyone seems to chill with an alien race potentially razing Earth a la General Sherman is a bit odd, but it’s not like Too Cute Crisis! is focusing on that. Liza being an alien has made for good gags so far. I’ve had some laughs from Too Cute Crisis! so far, but I have a feeling that this show is going to end up being forgettable. It’s the catch with these types of shows. It's a show reliant on the jokes hitting. And currently, they're hitting often enough to justify continuing watching.

Mangaka Ichirou Kuga is barely making ends meet–ever since their father died, he’s had to support his two younger siblings on his own with the earnings from drawing manga. He’s also the landlord of a social apartment (an apartment house with a common area), where he, his siblings, and several other people live in. There are no bad landlords in anime, unless if needed to advance the plot.
When he’s just about to miss a deadline, Shiori Goshiki applies to be his new assistant (his last two left to pursue their own dreams). Goshiki, despite only knowing about manga for a year, is excellent at her job as a manga assistant–excellent to the point where it’s otherworldly. Funnily enough, turns out that Goshiki IS from another world…well, from a shooting star but you get my point. They’re both unwillingly betrothed to each other when Kuga accidentally touches her stinger.
The fact that she’s an alien seems not to phase Kuga that much. I guess it’s okay when the alien is great at her job and a sweetheart to boot. Of the two anime I’m watching this season featuring a conventionally attractive alien woman, A Galaxy Next Door is by far the more serious one. Like Too Cute Crisis!, A Galaxy Next Door might end up being forgettable. It’s the way it’s shaping up so far. It isn’t that bad–just a bit dull so far. A standard supernational romance anime. Take it or leave it.
