Some of my favorites from 2021. Last year I had a huge reading slump and didn't even make it to 25 books. Maybe it's pandemic fatigue. So my collection of favorites is pretty small. Hey everyone! To introduce myself and to wind down the year of 2021, I’m going to share my five star books I’ve read this year!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum was one of the first books I read in 2021 that I gave five stars to. It tells the story of a woman named Isra who is from Palestine and travels to America to marry a man named Adam, also from a Palestinian family. It also tells the story of her daughter Deya at age 18 struggling to go to school when her family just wants her to marry and start her own family. This book introduced to me an example of a family with some very traditional values and how they treat their women differently from men. Isra’s story will leave you heartbroken and melancholy but it is one that needs to be heard. This book introduces some ways women are still treated poorly. They are left unprotected and even hurt by their own families, the ones who are supposed to support them the most. But it also shows the strength women possess, even if it isn’t always physical. It shows the uniqueness different cultures can provide when they are not harming people. This book illustrates how we can celebrate our differences, values, and customs without sacrificing who we are. Books of 2021: "Madam" by @phoebewynnewrites ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 ***** I surprisingly found this to be enjoyable! Albeit a slow pace, if you are a fan of classic literature (like I am) then the pacing is something that won't throw you off. The fact that it took place in the 90s, during the Thatcher years, but still presented that Gothic presence and atmosphere really threw me a curve ball but in a good way! It was such an innovative way of writing a story.  A creepy school running values from Victorian times? I found it be relatable to how the current climate is now. The Greek/Latin history may have turned some readers off but I found it delightful and intriguing to read. How these women were marred and belittled for being women in history is something that is still being done today. Perfect for readers who enjoy Gothic literature with a feminist theme intertwined in it.  Read my full review on my site! Books of 2021: Thr Girl Who Became a Tree by @josephcoelhoauthor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 ***** My love for novels in verse continues with another book that is both heartbreaking and inspirational that really touches the human soul. Partnered with breathtaking illustrations that are both haunting and enchanting, this @ckgawards Longlisted book (and I'm not surprised why it was nominated) brings out the really hard truths of the grieving process and the feelings a person may have during it is so realistic that the reader will have a hard time not feeling what the main character is going through. I also love the tie in with mythology, that was a very nice touch and actually added a deeper meaning to legend. Go ahead and find a way to add Songs in Ursa Major by Emma Brodie to your reading list this year. Kayleigh @bookwormescapes was the first to recommend. Renee @booktalketc also gave it a high rating - so l took it to the beach ���� “It’s 1969 and Jesse Reid is the headliner at an island music festival. He has a serious crash on his motorcycle and is unable to perform. Local girl, Jane Quinn and her band, The Breakers, goes on instead, winning the crowd with her voice and music. Jesse stays on the island to recover. He and Jane become friends, then lovers and then their bands are touring together. But both have secrets that could tear them apart.” Do you ever finish a book and sit back and go “Wow”? This is one of those books. Jane is a wonderful character to read. And she has some issues. But it’s wonderful when Brodie talks about Jane’s total immersion into the music. Have you ever been so passionate about something you got lost in it? I love the Quinn women and their backstory. I love Jane’s refusal to back down to the rampant sexism even when she feels she must flee the country. The ending is not one you expect. Just when you think it’s going to be a formula ending, Brodie eases into another direction. I appreciate that Brodie gives us an epilogue and lets us know what happens to these characters. Some reviewers have mentioned Daisy Jones vibes. It is the same era and there’s music. The story and characters are totally different. Don’t waste time - go get this book. Great book from Emma Brodie. What makes an exceptional read for you? To me great books are entertaining - they’re fast-paced and hard to put down - they make me feel some emotion on a deep level - the main character will have some of the same thoughts that I have making me feel that someone else is like me. I have read a lot of great stories this year. These are the best of the best. A Caller’s Game by JD Barker is my top book so far this year.
