Cowboy Carter: The Story

"Cowboy Carter isn’t just an album, it’s a journey."

Inspired by its storytelling, I put together a playlist that follows its own narrative. Weaving together songs that evoke the spirit of the West, resilience, and reinvention. This playlist isn’t just about country music; it’s about the evolution of identity, the blending of genres, and the feeling of freedom that comes with breaking the rules. Alongside each track, I’ve written a story that unfolds through the music, capturing the essence of the frontier both literal and emotional.

So saddle up, press play, and let the story unfold.

1. (Welcome to the Rodeo) Beyoncé welcomes y’all to the rodeo, setting the stage for the wild ride ahead.

2. (16 Carriages) She takes a moment to reflect on the long road that brought her here. The struggles, the dreams, and where she’s fixin’ to go next.

3. (Levii's Jeans) With her man by her side and a pair of worn Levi’s hugging her just right, she finds a little peace under the open sky.

4. (Stampede) But the next morning, something don't sit right in her gut. There’s a storm brewin’ and she can feel trouble stampedin’ her way.

5. (Spaghetti) Turns out, her cowboy’s been spreadin’ his charm to every hussy in town. Beyoncé snaps and it ain’t just him feelin’ her wrath but the whole town’s about to know her fury. Fire, brimstone, and heartbreak rain down.

6. (Alligator Tears) When the dust settles, she and her cowboy finally talk. No matter what, she can’t help but love him and his alligator tears always seem to work on her.

7-8. (Smoke Hour 2, Just for Fun) Guilt and shame creep in like shadows at sundown. She tries to have a good time but her heart’s still heavy with regret over the things she did and the pain she caused.

9. (Blackbird) She meets up with her best cowgirls and together they share their woes. It ain’t easy lovin’ a man who ain’t always true and this town sure don’t make it easier.

10. (Protector) After talkin’ with her girls, Beyoncé turns to her family. She promises to always be their protector but she lets go of the weight of bein’ perfect. She don’t have to carry it all alone.

11. (Remembrance) She looks back on her ancestors, the blood in her veins, and the Texas land that raised her up strong.

12. (Daughter) With her purpose clear, she saddles up for revenge against the townfolk, the harlots, and anyone else who dared to cross her.

13. (Bodyguard) With justice served, she stands tall, stronger than ever. Protectin’ her kin ain’t just her duty it’s who she was born to be.

14-15. (Smoke Hour, Texas Hold 'Em) Time to cut loose. She celebrates her new self with a foot-stompin’ hoedown, revelin’ in her freedom.

16. (Wild Mountain Thyme) As the music fades, she slow dances with her cowboy under a sky full of stars. For a moment, everything feels just right.

17-18. (The Linda Martell Show, Ya Ya) She takes the stage at the rodeo circuit, singin’ her heart out for the people. One by one, she wins over the town and earns their respect.

19-20. (Oh Louisiana, Buckaroo) Life settles down some and she soaks in the simple joys; her family, her home, and the quiet hum of the prairie.

21-23. (Desert Eagle, Riverdance, Two Hands to Heaven) This is the life she always dreamed of. Wild horses, a full moon, a little whiskey, and the man she loves... It’s all right where it oughta be.

24. (Dueling Banjos) But whispers start makin’ their way ‘round town… seems her cowboy might be up to his old ways again.

25-28. (My Rose, Tyrant, Sweet Honey Buckin, Country Trap Beat) Darkness creeps in once more, but this time, she won’t let it shake her. When folks come speakin’ ill on her family, she fights back, hard. She bucks, she rages, she rules with an iron grip.

29-31. (Dolly P, Jolene, Family) At a crossroads, she seeks out wisdom from a country queen... Miss Dolly herself. Dolly reminds her that family’s family, for better or worse. You don’t get to pick ‘em, but you gotta love ‘em.

32. (Two Most Wanted) With the dust settled and too many ghosts lingerin’ in that old town, Beyoncé, her cowboy, and their kin pack up and ride out. It’s time for a fresh start somewhere new, where the past can’t follow.

33-34. (American Requiem, Amen) As she watches the sun set over the horizon, she looks back on it all... Being a cowgirl, the love, the loss, the fights, the reckonings. She’s made peace with it now. Her time in the saddle is winding down, and she’s ready to lay her burdens down.

35. (There Never Was a Time) The curtain falls, the credits roll and Beyoncé’s story has been told, and she rides off into the twilight, knowing she’s left her mark on the world.
