The Mind: The Gateway of Understanding: The mind is the epicenter of our thoughts, perceptions, and understanding. It's where knowledge is processed, ideas are formed, and perspectives are developed. The mind can either be a fertile ground for truth or a battlefield for conflicting thoughts.

The Will: The Determiner of Choices: The will represents our capacity to make choices and decisions. It's the force that directs our actions, behaviors, and responses. The will empowers us to exercise agency, and it's through the will that we align ourselves with God's plans or stray from them.

Emotions: The Tapestry of Feelings: Emotions add color and depth to our human experience. They encompass a range of feelings, from joy and love to anger and sadness. Emotions can be influenced by circumstances, thoughts, and spiritual states. Though emotions are a vital part of our existence, they must be guided by God's truth.

Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." This verse emphasizes the importance of renewing the mind for discerning God's will.

Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." This verse guides us to focus our minds on virtuous and godly thoughts.

Proverbs 4:23: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." This verse highlights the significance of guarding the heart, which influences both emotions and decisions.

Harmonizing the Triad: The mind, will, and emotions are intertwined and often influence each other. Renewing the mind with God's Word helps align the will and emotions with His truth. Why Cohabitation Outside of Marriage Puts Your Future at Risk

Living together outside of marriage has become more and more common in recent years, but the Bible teaches that this is not God’s plan for our relationships. Many couples choose to move in together without clear intentions to marry. While some may believe cohabitation before marriage is beneficial for their eventual marriage, research has shown that this is not the case. Instead, cohabitation can actually lead to lower quality and less stable unions. The Bible teaches us that we should not conform to the patterns of this world, but rather be transformed by renewing our minds. The Importance of Commitment in Marriage One important biblical example of God’s plan for marriage can be found in the book of Genesis, where God created Adam and Eve to be united in marriage as one flesh (Genesis 2:24). Marriage is meant to be a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman, and living together outside of marriage is not in accordance with God’s plan. The apostle Paul also wrote about the importance of marriage and the need to avoid sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 7:2). Living together outside of marriage can lead to a lack of commitment and can make it easier to accept divorce as a solution to problems in the relationship. We are called to be committed to our spouses and to work through our problems together. Proverbs 3:3-4 says, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” Another reason why living together before marriage can be harmful is that it can lead to multiple cohabiting partners before marriage. This can put couples at an especially high risk of later divorce when they do marry. The Bible teaches that we should flee from sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18) and that we should avoid being unequally yoked with non-believers (2 Corinthians 6:14). It is important to seek a partner who shares our values and beliefs. Finally, when couples just “slide” into cohabitation, rather than “decide” to be together, they risk getting locked into a relationship with someone who is not the best fit for them. It is important to seek God’s guidance when it comes to our relationships and to trust in His plan for our lives. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Choosing a Committed Relationship Over Cohabitation While it may be tempting to follow the trend of cohabitation, we must remember that this is not God’s plan for our relationships. Instead, we should seek a committed relationship with a partner who shares our values and beliefs, and who is committed to building a lifelong marriage with us. We should trust in God’s plan for our lives and seek His guidance in all our decisions. Action Step: If you are currently living with your partner outside of marriage, consider what steps you can take to align your relationship with God’s plan. This may mean discussing marriage with your partner or seeking support from a trusted Christian Couples counselor. Narcissist Case Study – Simon The Magician

Acts 8:9-24

9 Now there was a man named Simon, who formerly was practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great; 10 and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, “This man is what is called the Great Power of God.” 11 And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. 13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.

14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!21 You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you.23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.” 24 But Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

Simon’s desire to exalt himself was shown by his “claiming to be someone great”.  Even though Simon clearly believed and was baptized (verse 13), he still retained his narcissistic traits.  Upon becoming a Christian, Simon would have had to give up the big stage of his “magic show”, putting him on the same level as ordinary people.  But even though Simon had believed, he was not content with being a humble learner with the other new believers – so when he saw Peter and John’s spiritual authority, his still-remaining desire for self-glory caused him to seek to get it for himself in the only way he knew by offering to buy it.  He obviously had very little understanding of the true nature of the Kingdom of God.

Peter, in his usual fashion, struck right to Simon’s heart by identifying that his heart was not right before God, as he was still in the “gall of bitterness”, and “bondage of iniquity”.   Peter challenged Simon to repent, the starting point to any solution for those inwardly bound by narcissism.  Peter also told Simon to ask God to forgive him for the (evil, self-glorifying) intention of his heart.

Simon’s response could be interpreted two ways.  Verse 24 says,  “But Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.””  Interpretation One is that Simon did not take personal responsibility for his actions and heart, and did not repent, but instead was putting responsibility back onto Peter.  Something like, “since you’re the one who accused me of this, you should be the one to pray about it, not me”.  The more likely Interpretation Two is that he did repent, and was humbly asking Peter and John for their assistance in the matter.  The word Simon used in asking Peter to pray for him is δεήθητε (deēthēte), meaning “beseech” or “pray earnestly” – indicating that Simon was indeed repentant and was asking the obvious spiritual authorities to intercede on his behalf.
